Well, aside from Patrick Fitzgerald and his team, given that the Scooter Libby criminal trial is set to begin on or about the 16th day of January, 2007, guess who else is going to DC?
After several months of phone calls and e-mails for logistical assistance, tracking down just the right person for inquiries at the courthouse, and lots of leg work, and thanks to the gracious assistance of Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post, we have managed to secure one of the very limited press passes for the Scooter Libby trial. (A huge thank you to Arianna for all of her assistance in this.)
Yep, that is correct: your intrepid pals at Firedoglake, with the more than able assistance of Marcy Wheeler, Emptywheel of The Next Hurrah, and fabulous author of Anatomy of Deceit, and a few other all stars who have talked with us about covering various aspects of the trial process, are headed to DC to cover as much of the trial as we can manage to see and hear.
To do this coverage properly, we are working on subletting an apartment in DC, to allow us to be at the courthouse as frequently as we can manage with our respective schedules. We also have travel costs, to and from DC, and food costs and a number of other necessary budget items that all add up.
But we need a little help from anyone who can give it.
Apartments and travel do not come cheaply these days. We have worked to reduce the budget to as spare an amount as we can — we initially thought that hotel stays would be more cost effective but, as it turns out, that is not the case because hotel prices in the DC area are at premium rates, especially with Congress starting back into session tomorrow. So, Jane has been working her tail off to find us an apartment in a location near public transportation and/or the courthouse, and we've finally found a couple of places that will work well with enough bedroom space and a tiny kitchen and internet access — and reasonable rental costs. No mean feat in DC, let me tell you! We're negotiating now for a place, and we hope to have that finalized shortly — it's been tough finding a two-month sublet, so it's taken a bit of wrangling. (Thanks, Jane!)
We've also tried to budget for travel using the least expensive possibilities as we can find, but because it is January and February (and because I have to drive through a ski area to get to DC), we've also tried to budget for weather contingencies for at least part of the time, allowing for some flights since driving may not be an option if the weather refuses to cooperate. Because there is a kitchen, we'll be able to do a grocery store run for at least a portion of the food expenses — and coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.
All of us have lives and families and jobs and other obligations outside of blogging, so we will have to rotate through as best we can, and we're trying to work out all of the logistics on our end of things to be able to do just that. (I'll have to make quick trips in and out because of The Peanut, and we've tried to factor that into the plans, just as one example.)
Where you can help tremendously is in assisting us to defray some of the costs of this venture — we've pared the budget down to $12,000.00 — which at first glance seems like a lot (at least, it did to me living in the rural area that I do), but consider that a good half that cost is two months of apartment time in the DC area with enough bedrooms and couch space for all of us. (Yeesh, how do people make ends meet there for a lifetime?)
Anything that you can do to help with the budget would be very much appreciated by all of the folks involved. What we ask is that if you can make a donation via PayPal (see the button in the right-hand-most column, near the top of the page here), that you add $.07 to the end of the donation, so that we will know it is meant for this particular coverage.
Any help you can give at this time would be great, otherwise we'll have to figure out a way to do this out-of-pocket and, to be completely honest, it is not something that I can just afford to do (we wouldn't be asking if we didn't need the help).
We are all very excited about this — obtaining a press pass was not easy, and we plan to make the most of it as much as we humanly can do so. Thanks to everyone for all the support on the coverage of this CIA Leak Case from the start of the investigation until now. And thanks to anyone who can chip in a bit to help us in our coverage over the next few weeks.
Just think, your contribution puts us that much closer to being eyeball to eyeball with Dick Cheney on the stand. (Or at least, sitting in the room while he and Fitz are eyeball-to-eyeball, which is just as intriguing…) The trial will not be covered live on television because federal courts do not allow cameras in the courtroom, so in order to do detailed coverage, we need to be there in person. Thanks to anyone who can help us to make that happen.
Very soon it will be on to DC. But until then, you'll have to satisfy yourself with a fantastic rundown of some of the outstanding issues in the case that emptywheel put together (with the help of Jeff) — great read!

FITZ!!!
Me too!! Fitz!!
press pass!
Congrats! Need a 60-yo volunteer intern with his writing hand/arm in a cast?
Holy Cow, Christy…do they let blackberries in the courthouse?
Awsome!!
I’m in for $50.07!
WOW!!
I’ll be in on Friday.
Guaranteed.
Woo hoo! Now I’ll be able to get my Fitz news from an organization that doesn’t have people who are knee-deep in the scandal themselves! Say “hi” to JudyJudyJudy for me!
Congrats Christy & Jane. Great news! What a year it will be.
OMFG! The Firepups have arrived.
Congratulations, guys. You are about to make history. Firedoglake is going to be THE place to go for coverage. Hope you’ve boosted your bandwidth.
BTW, when you’ve made the big time and you are on all of the political talkshows, I hope you won’t forget the posters who cheered you on.
TeddySanFran @
6
woo hoo! I’ll be matching you shortly…
dagnabit…*awesome
Kentucky Woman at 7 — There is going to be quite a bit of security for this, as you might imagine. We’re still working through all the details of what we can and cannot bring with us to the courthouse for coverage. And where we’ll be — there will be two options for press and, as I understand it, there will be a rotation for some in the courtroom and some in an adjacent room with monitors and sound set up for coverage. We’re kind of playing it by ear until we get firm information on logistics for this.
Jane has been working her tail off to find us an apartment
what, no extended slumber party chez Pach?
I didn’t even get to finnish the whole piece ore read comments, I just had to get down here as soon as possible and say;
HOLY CROW!!!CONGRATULATIONS
I think I would quit work to be in there.
have fun
ps;
sprint has and EXCELLANT wireless data card for your laptop, I get about 700 kps wherever I can make a phone call
look into it, wireless plans are very inexpensive
EPU’d from below:
Richmond @ 167
Kludge added below: “What do you think the cell phone video of Saddam was all about.”
In some ways the call for frogwalks, also works for expiation on our side.
Holy MOLY! YEA!!!!!!!!
But, more importantly, Congratulations! This is amazing.
you still got the physical address to send donations to?
Woo-hoooooo! This is fabulous news! I’m looking forward to this trial even more now!
(now to read the rest of the post)
Justr paid my $50.07 for my spectator seat! Booyah!
Christy -
Have y’all shut down the PO box address for snail mail donations? Don’t see it on the side bar where once located.
Christy — I hope the apartment has an empty room for all the spoils of Georgetown and Dupont Circle shopping during downtime {teehee!!}
Oh. My. God.
That’s AWESOME!!!!
Can’t pony up right away, but I’ll work on it, will try to match the $50.07.
And this on top of the announcement from Kos about the JV publishing company Vaster Books?
It’s Christmas all over again!
Wahooooo!!!
since the trial won’t be televised, I nominate darkblack as court artist/illustrator.
I think we are changing the snail mail addy — let me check with Jane on that and I’ll get back to everyone.
Exciting news! You should chck out the classifieds in Roll Call and the Hill. The apts are geared to young staffers so not the greatest but cheap by DC standards. Also location is Capitol Hill and if the Court Building is Prettyman, likely easy walking distance.
Oh rats-re donations…I’ve just been hit with a huge bill for car repair–will the donations page/site, whatever, be open for awhile? Next payday I might be able to cough up something – what more worthy cause could there be?
(not that I’m going to get any pleasure/info/schadenfreude out of this trip…).
Got a snailmail addy for this? because Pay
nonpal insists that I register for an account before it will take plastic. And I don’t think I should have to do that. (There is something seriously wrong with that setup. Still.)How much would ringside seats at this trial be worth ?
If this were a hardcover book, covering this story in depth, it would be a worthwhile purchase. Lets hope you guys raise the full amount.
perris @ 15
I just got finnished reading the post
if you’re in need, I can do without my data card for a month or two, I’ll ship it to you, let me know, jane has my email address
Great Christy!
Count me in….
“….Firedoglake casts an incandescent light on the deceitful tactics of the Libby crowd. We critically need them to understand and to counter the conventional wisdom of the MSM…”

Click on the Visa/Mastercard button, tab through “login securely now,” choose your card type, and the fields for your card type and number will be displayed. No need for a paypal account.
Awesome! And please let the DC-area firepups defray the costs by taking you guys out to our favorite restaurants, too!
Wow! An empire in the making! I just read Kos’s announcement wrt Marcy’s book. I didn’t realized he and Jane were forming a publishing house. That is so fine! And just to keep up with the other guys here – I’m in for 50.07, too.
darn! now I’m really cryin’ that I can’t get fdl at work… anybody have veryizon wireless and a phone that uses their mobile web? can I access fdl on it?
Congradulations!!
This is GREAT NEWS and I very much look forward to reading your converage.
It’s like a window has opened letting fresh air and bright light flow through to every room in every home on the planet.
Yeesh, how do people make ends meet there for a lifetime?
You’re tellin’ me! I was at a meeting of the county commission I serve on that oversees some low-income programs, and I found out that the line to be considered “low income” in Fairfax County (just outside of DC) is $60,000 a year for a family of four.
TeddySF @ 33:
Thanks for explaining the invisible instructions. (Now may I kill whoever set it up that way? It used to work without that kind of #$%^&.)
I just put in $100.07. Have fun!
That is damn good news.
Tell Ms. Huffington that we are grateful for her assistance in obtaining the
truthpress pass for the trial. You girls rawk!
I’ll see your fifty and raise another.
Mope. Still didn’t go. #$%^&*(!!!
do we get a Fitz Trip thermometer?
ps: Fitz is just so cute and shy looking in that pic…..Fitz Me!!
Yeah, I would prefer the snail mail approach also, since PayPal/Visa/MC will all take their cut and I would rather have 100% go to you gals instead.
Merry Fitzmas! We’ve waited so long.
Good luck!
Excellent news. I know you’ll all do us proud, and I’m looking forward to the excellent reporting you will do for FDL.
Just sent in my donation, and since this trial is going to last quite some time, I pledge to make a donation each month of the trial.
Thanks to Arianna for her help in securing you the needed passes, and to your families for making the adjustments and sacrifices needed for you all to do this work.
De-lurking to say Yippee! I am so looking forward to this.
Retirin’ and the Mrs. are in for $50.07. (I assume we get the senior discount.)
I’m in for $50.07 too. I want to sit in the same row! Yea!
Yay!! Congratulations Christy, Jane & all the Firedoglake people!! Woohoo!!! Chipped in a bit.
Sent over $500.07
You three are almost single-handledly keeping this ship afloat. Thanks again.
ohhh…the sweet deliciousness. Arianna is a doll. Question: a friend informs me that Cheney will be deposed outside of the courtroom, won’t make an actual appearance. Is this so?
damn, I got so jacked I didn’t get down to the .07 deal, I just went to paypal and $20 was the default so I launched it. Does that mean you won’t get it??
I’m in for the 50.07, maybe match that next week.
You go, girl!
P J Evans @ 42, I’ve tried using MasterCard earlier, and again today. Today when I tried to insert an amount, PayPal comes to the fore. Have had problems with PayPal in the past so want to avoid it.
Are you going to send TRex????
I hope that Scooter will invite you to his pardon party. It should be happening soon.
Dudes, this is the year! 2007!
Everyone can afford at least $20.07. Just do it! The price of 2-3 movie tickets and you’ll have a front row seat at the best cinematic experience of the year.
Thank you to all of you FirePups who can carry the load now, very grateful to you.
Unfortunately impecunious for a couple weeks, but I am glad this project isn’t going to suffer for it.
Dying for more details from Jane about Vaster Books; it was so obviously a crying need in the progressive community for a publishing house that could handle tests that deserve tight turn-around times in sync with events. Groovy!!

This is such fabulous news!!! I’m so glad we won’t have to rely on just the msm for coverage of this trial. The FDL blogging goddesses will provide complete and accurate details, leaving everyone else in the dust.
I’m in for $100.07. I just wish I could be there!
Arianna, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Leaven-Leaven of Malice @ 59
Leaven, I wish that were true. Check out some of the posts in the last couple days on how low-income people really live.
Two or three movie tickets? I last went to a movie nearly 2 years ago because…I can’t afford it. My car is going to stay in the shop until I can raise the price for its absolutely essential repairs…that may be a week or more. Sorry – not EVERYone can afford 20.00 without notice.
Just getting caught up. This is great news. Say hi to Dick and Scoots for me.
Good idea about renting an apartment. It will be way cheaper than staying at a hotel, and there are almost certainly apartments there that cater to folks who want to stay on a short-term basis. The transient population of the DC area must be nearly equal to the permanent popopulation.
First FDL gets a first class, official Press Secretary, and now we scored an honest-to-God Press Credential for DC’s hottest trial since Nixon’s attorneys faced Judge Sirica. Damn!
portia’s right – I hope the bandwidth is ready for the traffic. It’s gonna be hoppin’ around the Lake!!
This is ever so wonderful – congrats Christy!
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. (and of course her)
tejanarusa @ 66
Hey Tejanarusa, I saw awhile back that you live in South Texas. Me, too. And I am in Texas becasue of SAD as well. Where are you? I am north of SA.
just sent in my 50.07…
But what is The Fire Dog Lake Company? ;)
(oh, and, just curious, but who are the “we” that will be reporting on this?)
TeddySanFran @ 62
Good comment. I’ve always found it ironic that the term “triangulate” actually means a process of determining the position of something more accurately, yet it is increasingly used in politics to mean obscuring one’s position as much as possible.
Gnome de Plume @ 71
Retirin’ and the Mrs. hope to be in Boerne in five years. Of course, this donation will set us back a day or so……

I would like to contribute as well, but PayPal can kiss my ass. I signed up for that last year to be able to pay for something for which there was no alternative. It wasn’t but a DAY before I started getting obvious phishing emails trying to lure me into “logging in” to “correct/verify” my account by entering personal info.
Makes me too nervous. I won’t use it.

Me too – errr – me Three!
Firepups – My apologies.
I just re-read my post (hit send a little quick)–don’t mean to sound bitter. I’m just having a perfect storm money-wise – payday was way short due to absence with no sick leave left, and then my car chooses payday to die. The usual Catch-22 – can’t get to work without the car (no pub trans at all), can’t pay for the car without getting to work.
Now ends the personal soap opera report, returning you to:
Woo-Hooo-Christy and Jane (and T-Rex?) are going to keep us all up to date on Libby news! I’m happy!
This is fantastic! Mr. Dido & I will be glued to the TV and the computer. We’re in for $100.07, but want to do it by mail. As soon as the new snail mail address comes up, we’ll send that check.
Also, we will be very very happy to have many pounds of the world’s best coffee (Peet’s in Berkeley) sent to the D.C. headquarters of FDL….
Gnome de Plume @ 71
Gnome – I’m in SA- “inside the Loop”, even. (That’s Loop 410, our “beltway”. Old SA inside, new suburban-style SA outside)

I got those two, and I hadn’t ever used Paypal. I got them pretending to be from banks I never did business with, as well. It’s almost certainly coincidence.
Reitirin’ in five – I am east on Hwy 46 from Boerne. Tis a nice place to be, despite all the Rethugs. We are having a thunderstorm at the moment and my dogs are going nuts.
Sorry thisis off topic but…Should Bush announce troop increases on Tues. as expected ,we are asking that people organize a proper, immediate response to this contemptuous refusal to face reality. Here in Montana there will be direct action immediaately upon any call for a “surge”.It is time to stop complaining and start refusing. Please organize something in your area to deliver a message. The MOMENT has arrived.Use the web, get on the blogs, let’s do this thing.
Considering it was the Plame case that brought me to FDL, this news is about as exciting as it gets.
Now, when Fitz shoots and scores, will you all be doin’ the “wave” there in the courthouse, or would that be considered…hmm, undignified?
P.S. My $50.07 on its way tonight.
$100.07 on the way
My donation to cover the first few pounds of coffee, on the way.
Wow, CHS on cspan over and over.
Then Blog Wars.

Now, your taking us all along for the trial of the year.
Just Wow.

Tejana, I love old SA. New SA, not so much. Too much like all the other ‘burbs in all the other sunbelt cities. I am in NB.
{{{tejanarusa}}} — I have so been there and back, having lived on ramen noodles for an extended period in grad school. I would never want anyone to contribute if they could not afford to do so — truly. Support comes in lots of ways, including great comments, which Jane and I appreciate very, very much indeed. :)
BobbyG @ 76
I get those too, sometimes several in a day, and I don’t have a PayPal account at all. The spammers and phishers send those out wholesale, hoping for people to bite. (I get them from banks and credit unions, too, and even from ‘Amazon’. No dice, guys!)
Delete them, or send them to the spam filter. They don’t have anything to do with whether you have an account or not. (More like the letter from St Matthew’s Church in Tulsa, with the paper ‘prayer rug’, that’s going back to them in their reply-paid envelope.)

You have raised a good question, but I’m leaning toward thinking that a nonprofit journalistic consortium would not be possible. Without looking more closely at Internal Revenue Code Sections 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) and conducting more tax research, I can’t see a tax-exempt purpose for the consortium that would allow it to be tax-exempt under either Internal Revenue Code Sections 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4).

BTW, I just got an email from the fiancee (who got an email from paypal) “who’s fdl? what are we rich now?” hah.

Have you ever seen a dictionary containing a definition for the political use of the words triangulate or triangulation? In a political context, what is the connotation of triangulation if it is apparently defined as obscuring one’s position as much as possible? At times, I think of triangulation (and I wish another word could be substituted for triangulation) in a political context as an attempt by a politician to simultaneously favor different sides of a political issue. In a political context, what other words come to mind when one thinks of a politician’s attempt to straddle a political fence?

During the 2000 “Selection” I always had this vision of everyone in protest of the process/decision just walking out at 8pm in the middle of their street, stopping their car and getting out and lighting a candle, then for our Democracy. Now for our Democracy and to prevent the Sacrifice of more of our soldiers to save a bully’s ego. See Keith Olberman on Sacrifice. VERY Powerful, referenced by Christy earlier today.

P.S. Regarding a contribution meter. If you can put arbitrary html in your posts, and edit them, you could do something real cheap and easy like so:
Which makes two fixed-width short black boxes (e.g. horizontal lines) around a thicker red line of variable width. If you set the black lines to 120 pixels the width of the middle box (20px in the example) would just be the number of dollars you’d gotten so far divided by 100 (so the 20px would represent $2000, or about 1/6th of the way to your goal.

I can’t wait for the trial and you gals here have provided the best coverage by far. I’ll keep checking comments or even a new post looking for a snail mail addy. Best of luck, and try to get some pics of that dish Patrick.
Hey, Christy–My $100.07 contribution to the best ever Firedoglake winter reading program has been paypal-ed to you…Sign me up!
I’m in at $50.07, very exciting.
On a related note, i have it on bad authority that Scooter also took up a DC
apartmentsafe house, code-named Aspen House, to protect against media intervention. He turned down Judy’s hotel offer, though he has a second key.tejanarusa @ 78
I hears ya. Don’t feel bad – it’s a jungle out there sometimes.
Bil @ 134
PLAN ZERO> I don’t think the darkness of night move would cut it. How about at 1 PM (all coasties are up) everyone dialed zero. Then called or emailed their Congress people to say they have zero viable support for this war escalation at home.
Crazy Horse @ 147
I thought Judy had two pads in DC.
It’s a lean time of year for me, but I’m in for $10.07.
Let the truth go forth.
punaise @

I second the nomination.
punaise @ 122
If Marcy and I are there at the same time, that’s entirely possible. :)
Carter’s comments and demeanor at Ford funeral: superb, human, unpretentious. No wonder the Nazgul/Wingnuts hate him.
Swopa — oh, definitely…this has the makings of an indie film success. Maybe a Lonely Girl-type update on YouTube every day…
Maybe CT Bob and Spazeboy could take a day trip down and catch up with briefings on weekends.
Somebody start writing the outline now!
Redshift @

What Redshift said!! There’s great (and often inexpensive) ethnic food of practically every kind in DC. Let us local Firepups show you our favorite places!
Almost forgot – my $50.07’s in the pot. FITZ!!!!
cha-ching, I’m in too.
Congratulations. I’m thrilled to know that we will have the privilege of sending bloggers to a trial whom we can trust to engage in acts of journalism and objectivity. An informed public could not have a more valuable credentialed representative than the FDL crew.
We are all here for various reasons. I feel safe in saying that a common thread shared by all is that we are sick and F’ing tired of journalists engaged in acts of pandering, gossip, agenda-izing, dissembling, distraction, distortion and negligent misrepresentation of matters they are too lazy to want to understand much less capable of understanding.
My .02 cents, (in addition to my .07 earmark) is that the persistent argument regarding bloggers vs. journalists misses the point as does so much else.
This issue is not who is a “journalist” or who is a “blogger,” the issue who is engaged in acts of journalism. While we have an abundance of journalists, there is a paucity of journalism. This site and others like it have plugged a sucking and gaping chest wound in the body of public information.
No matter how bloggers ReddHedd and Jane plead, the fact is they have been caught “Redd”-handed engaged in acts of journalism and are guilty of first degree public service.

OT — sorry, this one bugs the snot out of me:
Hensarling, you moron, that “smoke” you see is fumigant hanging in the air after delousing Congress. I suppose you’ve never seen a bug bomb at work, though.
christy!
i have an absolute ton of frequent flyer miles from US Air. they’re yours if you want them.
A couple of days coffee on me

Looks like the contributions and pledges are already past the $2200 mark. Woohoo!!

Rayne @ 158
Ironic when you think about who used to be running things …
twolf1 @ 162
The music’s better, that’s for sure.
On a related note, here’s Marcy’s new thread:
http://thenexthurrah.typepad.c…..oun_1.html
Christy Hardin Smith @ 91
I regret that I have no spare money to offer, because I really respect you guys for this. The American “fourth estate” should bow and scrape to you for doing their job for them.
Rayne @ 158
Inexcusable. Does Hensarling think we haven’t been paying attention since 1994? His boys are the past masters of backroom dealing, smoky or otherwise. Fuck him and the Beemer he rode in on.
KO is such a pro and tweety is such an idiot. KO has the integrity to note the nice job that even Rumsfeld did at the funeral while Tweety starts off saying he was surpried Carter wasn’t political in his remarks. What a jackass.
punaise @ 150
Right again, punaise, as i said, “on bad authority.” But why does Judy kneed to install her own parquet?
Here’s hoping our blogmistresses have an opportunity to take down (figuratively, NSA minder!!) the BowTie Bloviators, Tucker Carlson and George Will, during the Great Scooter Trial.
This is my first post here and my first contribution to FDL. I just sent $1000.07. Thanks so much for bringing the truth out.
EvilDrPuma @ 167:
I prefer ‘the white elephants they rode in on’. And no, they have really short (and selective) memories. ‘Forgive and forget’ – they forgive themselves but not others, and they forget their acts but not those of others.
The link to Marcy’s latest (see Stephen Parrish @ 165) raises a question I’d like to put to the legal eagles here.
She refers to a passage from Hubris, where “a lawyer close to the principals” has a chat with the author. My sense is that this conversation had to have been approved by the lawyer’s client to avoid breaching atty/client privilege. Assuming that Fitz could identify the lawyer in question, could he then call that lawyer to impeach or corroborate other testimony? That is, does a lawyer’s leak constitute a waiver of privilege?
And if there was no approval from the client, then would I be correct in saying that such a conversation would put the attorney’s license in jeopardy with the bar association?
steelthing rocks!
steeelthing @ 171

steeelthing @ 171

Bil @ 134
Give me a break! I’m sorry you had a bad experience, but that doesn’t make DC the mugging capital of the U.S. (it’s not.) I’ve lived here all my life, and taken the subway frequently, especially at night, and have never seen any evidence of muggers “popping in and out of the subway system.” The Washington Metro is actually documented as being safer than subway systems in comparably-sized cities.
Be careful, as you would in any city, but be realistic.
steeelthing @ 171
Wow! Looks like the truth will out.
steeelthing @ 171
*clutches pearls*
Welcome to the world of commenting! Any other first timers want to step up and join the fun?
Crazy Horse @ 169
just Google “Judy kneepads”… a well-earned monicker, an image of her “servicing” of the administration’s needs
I’m in for $50.07 – small price to pay for real news coverage. Looking forward to your reports!
steeelthing @ 170
Has a way with words, I’d say….
Now that you have commented, no more lurking!
Peterr at 173 — Yes, it could certainly open that door. And I’m certain that Team Fitz would be quite interested in that…
Swopa @ 176
Wo-o-o-w! Steelthing!
And Swopa, are you going to DC, too?
OT – Pelosi speaking on CSPAN-2
Christy Hardin Smith @ 183
What if a “lawyer close to the principals” is just (for example) Joe DiGenova, rather than one of Scooter’s official legal team?
Jeb Hensarling is a total puppet/idiot tool of the Dallas County Republican party. He says whatever he is told to say. When the Firedog media empire rises to the top we will no longer have to listen to crap like this being spouted about in order to “balance” stories.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 183
As if Team Irving didn’t have enough to worry about already. Keeping Irving out of the click is going to be tough enough, but putting their own necks on the block . . . ouch.
Be afraid, Team Irving, be very afraid. As the former governor of Illinois could tell you, you don’t want to attract Fitz’s interest.
Swopa @ 186
It wouldn’t matter much, as the lawyer (whoever it might be) couldn’t clam up by saying “privilege”.
I’m in for $100.07, with supplementation later this month, once holiday extravagances have been put to rest. (Via check once a snailmail address is posted. Paypal always seems a bit too Ed’s Bar and Savings & Loan for my liking…)
Should Cheney actually show up in court (and wouldn’t he pretty much have to? I can’t imagine any federal judge going for the “I’m far too important to testify in person” argument), I would like to request that whichever FDL correspondent is on duty at the time take a second’s break from journalistic objectivity and sneer at the VP on my behalf. Thanks much.
I’m in for 50.07. Thanks Christy for taking this on – and equally to Mr. Reddhead for the family challenges this will bring. In many ways all such separations are tough – even with regular meet-ups – and also for the peanut – but she is of the blissful age, where later she will have no recollection of it.
Peterr @
173
This is a wildarsed guess, but it could also be someone like Addington. Of course, he’s being called to testify on precisely this issue (particularly to the new news that the important conversation about this happened after July 6).
Though this resembles the kind of leak we saw when Libby had only his old buddy Joseph Tate, who the NYT has reported told Floyd Abrams specifically what Libby had testified to. So Fitz knows that much–and probably suspects Tate for a lot of other convenient leaking.
P J Evans @ 172
Don’t I know it.
Look, I expect–I hope everybody expects–that the Dems are going to run floor and committee business on the level rather than adopt the tactics we’ve seen from the GOP for twelve years. I don’t want to be like them. But you and I know that isn’t what they’re talking about. Any time the Dems hold any kind of discussion, we’re going to hear Republicans whinging about government by reune. And we’re just going to have to learn to ignore it or find a way to shut their mouths about it.
Richmond @
149
Thanks Richard, better, Whatever works. Time for daylight. I just dialed zero. They are in busyness to help us place calls if something isn’t working, OK! My idea I guess is to stop traffic, stop wherever you are, get people’s attention. STOP. And call Zero?
It would be nice if this could be done BEFORE The Decider decides to quit not deciding and decides his decision.
I am so happy to hear this great news.
Ok. No more lurking. I am unable to visit D.C. anytime soon. I was there for my first time during the Clinton years and was so overcome with pride I could talk of nothing else to my friends. Now I feel disgusted at the very thought of what all of these criminals have done to this country. All I want is the truth and intelligent analysis of how it can be used to take back this country so I contribute with great pride in knowing there are people on FDL who will do thier best to bring it out.
“also for the peanut – but she is of the blissful age, where later she will have no recollection of it.”
I disagree, and I think it’s a positive in the long run becayse at some point in the maturing process Peanut will realize what warriors for change her parents were.
This is so exciting!
I’m sorry I can’t contribute right now, things are very tight. I hope I can next month, though.
I just arrived to read the latest and WOW! That’s fantastic news! Now to go and contribute. Wheeee!
I”m in for $100.07 Thanks team firedoglake for providing intelligent commentary. Can’t wait for the analysis.
OT – I look at the photo on Raw of the idiot and corrupt President of Zimbabwe who has bankrupted his rich country and tried to destroy both the poor and all of his opposition. He now is pressing to bring back the ousted white farmers. May he – and his soulmate – the Chimpie rest in Hell. Oh wait, is this part of our new save-Africa movement? I bet there are fingerprints (foreign aid, armaments, pentecostalist AIDS & anti-birth control clinics). Tragic.
I would think that a self-proclaimed “all-star blogger” wouldn’t have to beg for money from strangers in order to do a proper job of “citizen journalism.” How embarrassing. There’s a faint, almost identifiable odor to this nonsense. Smells like rank amateurs desperate for attention … and blog hits. Kind of like kos and his new vanity press project. Pick up the beige phone, people … it’s P.T. Barnum and he has some wisdom for you.
[Mod Note; use the “Quote This Comment” tool at you own risk.]

If they’ll have me and we can work out the logistics, I’d love to go. I just started a new job a few weeks ago, but during the interview process I discussed the possibility of taking a week off sometime in February.
I implied that it was for a family reunion. :)
Bustednuckles @ 203
*sigh*
My apologies…but only for the second sentence I wrote. Christy, Jane and the gang deserve to be defended against an overt accusation like that.
retirin’ in five @ 197
I agree (I’ve been there -long periods away with research in places I couldn’t take mine). I meant for a young kid it is a bit to take in, unlike when they are later – when they will appreciate.
OT – Cindy Sheehan, anti-war activists interrupt Democratic press conference
I hope it does drive up your page hits and maybe you get more coin from advertisers.
BTW – Don’t forget to visit Hains Point sometime while you’re hear. If Peanut joins you, “The Awakening” is fun to climb on, and the playground is good fun also.
twolf1 @ 211
Good for her…and she couldn’t pick a better target than Rahm “I done won us this election by getting all my candidates beat” Emanuel.
It’ll be interesting to see what differences there are between coverage here and what shows up in the traditional media. Thanks for doing what y’all do here.
I’m in for 100.07…At this rate, you should have some extra cash for some Ho’s if you are over in Alexandria during your stay.
I’m in for 100.07 and I’ll do it again next month. I’m so excited!
Richmond at 210 — no malice intended, I should have added. There was some commentary a few days ago about Christy running for some kind of office, local, national, whatever. One has to encourage good people to run — or we get what we have — and family always has to be factored in but, in the long run, to lead by example is perhaps one of the best things a parent can do. Just sayin’
Will the Libby ‘roast’ lead to a bigger fish fry?
Congratulations. It is important to keep an eye out for stuff that comes out in the trial –for investigations (hopefully) in Congress.
Also would be interested to hear your take on questions that aren’t asked — but should have been asked.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 217
Heeeyyy! Is Kiddo really Punaise?? I never “see” them in the same place together. hmmm…
steeelthing @

steeelthing, that is on *hell* of a delurk.
Christy, Jane, emptywheel — you are magnificent and magnetic.
Blogwars was on somebody’s TV the otherday, I was so proud to say, “I’m a Firedog.”
Today I’m fitz to bust. Gosh, there’s a little tear, where’d that come from?
Thurs is my day to do bills, etc, I will see what shakes out and .07 it to you then.
OT again:
Wonderful headline on the front page at the LA Times site:
Bush to offer plan to balance budget
Saying that it took only two years to cut deficit in half, president says rest could be gone by 2012.
Delusional, all right. What deficit is he talking about having halved in two years? Where does he think the money will come from to retire it by 2012 (well after he’s out of office, you’ll have noticed)? The same place he’s planning to get all those troops for his ’surge’ (which I think is some place upon which he sits)?
Oh now this is cool. I can’t contribute as of yet, because i’m in a short paycheck time because of various bills. I should be able to send a bit a little later in the month though. (thank the gods for school loans to offset my work hours.)
If i wasn’t paying any attention to FDL before? i’ll be constantly flipping to you guys between classes for this. Congrats!
This means a return of the Fourth Estate in the greatest way possible. From the sidelines by honest and educated citizens.
Delighted to hear you’ll be visiting our “fair city.” I’m assuming you can locate my e-mail from my registration. Just wanted to say my family & I live here, have two kids away @ college, thus a couple of empty rooms. We live in Bethesda, about 8 blocks from the Metro.
Whatever your living arrangements turn out to be, we’d be glad to assist you while you’re here.

Congrats, ladies of the lake! I’m so thrilled to know that you’ll be keeping us abreast of the trial. That just beats the hell outta crappy newsreporting.
I’ll be putting in my seven cents worth and then some later this evening when I get home.
One more question: will there be vlogging from the Prettyman steps, as well as the old-fashioned kind?
EvilDrPuma @ 227
And there will be world peace! And everyone gets a pony!

Holy Crappola, pretty impressive. Rumor has it E. Fudd will contribute when the p.o is on line. Winter vacationing is now a far off the map, unless of course the pardon me factor is in the equation. Thanks so very much for your efforts ‘Ladies of the Lake.’ P.S. Ya just couldn’t fit all this stuff into a book could ya.

I didn’t recall any deficit cutting going on in this maladministration and I’m pleased that I’m not the only one who’s going ‘Say what?!’ at that story. Jeebus, what they expect us to believe…. I am sure Cindy waited for Rahm to begin her message. How can Rahm take credit for this brilliant strategy?
I’d be happy to donate but to characterize me as financially well to do would simply be inaccurate.
Okay, if everyone will scoot down just a little, I just paid for my seat, too. I seriously considered using frequent flyer miles and hotel points to go to DC for a couple of days to stand in line and be able to see even a bit of the trial, but somehow, I’m thinking this is even better!
The $50.07 is on its way, and I am thrilled to know that we can help, in even a small way.
-S
Great news that “we” will have eyes in that courtroom.
We will be reading Lake for the truth… Ain’t that something!
Happy New Year to all Fire Pups!
$20.07 on the way. I’d send more but I haven’t seen the most recent Visa bill yet LOL.
I think this is a great development on a number of levels. Christy, Marcy, Jane et al have much more detailed knowledge of the many facests of this case than the MSM types. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised of some of Fitz’s staffers read this blog.
I just sent over $10.07. Gosh, I know its a ridiculous amount, but I believe in what you all are doing. I have followed this case from day one. There is so much more at stake here than just Scooter Libby on trial. Best wishes to the FGL gang from The Woodlands, Texas.
Christy, I seem to be having a sinking spell. I just emailed to your address asking if this is where to send paypal donations. Sould have just asked here. There may be some other donation address challenged people who need to know where to send money. Thanks, and of course we all await your supberb reporting on the CIA leak case.

When is Jane moving to Connecticut? Or are we being asked to cover that move as well?

Don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but I just tried about 10 times to give you guys some $$ & it just won’t compute – was using card rather than paypal.
Dang! Hopefully, I won’t be billed 10X what I decided I could afford. If I can’t get the thing to work, maybe you’ll just have to “feel” our good wishes thru the ether. Sorry. —- A.
RevDeb Do you use PayPal? I don’t know how to register for that, & can’t get thru properly using card. Does transaction require cookies???
Adie @ 274
I used the credit card button which also feeds into PayPal but doesn’t require an account. Yes it requires cookies but my preferences on the browser only allow cookies for sites that I navigate to.
I had no problems doing this and have not had problems in the past either.
RevDeb thanks! wish me luck.
I THOT I was excited enuf just getting to watch Pelosi tomorrow, but this trial stuff is – oh WOO HOO!!!!!
You don’t need to register with PayPal to use the contribution system. Just skip over “Welcome to the PayPal Checkout” section and just use your credit card data. At the end it will ask if you want to open a PayPal account and you can just exit at that point.
I’m listening to Joe Wilson’s speech at Yearly Kos and I am outraged once again.

Rm
Way epu’d, but I sent what I could, thanks again for all you do.
I know that we will really get the truth from D.C. when ya’ll get there.
The link should generate a pre-filled form to the PayPal site (which is acting as the bookkeeper agency). I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.
Brownandserve @290
Thanks for your efforts. Tomorrow I’ll try again. I’ve only had this problem with FDL – could Norton be my problem?
Boudica @ 291
Seems unlikely since the pre-filled form doesn’t appear to be anything special when I look at the underlying code. If you are using a really old browser, that could be an issue. But other than than, I’m out of ideas. Be sure to click on the Visa/Mastercard donate icon rather than the PayPal icon.
Brownandserve @
292
You are correct, it wasn’t Norton – and it’s not an old browser, only site where I’ve had this difficulty. Maybe I’ll try the credit card thingy tomorrow. I really do appreciate all of your help, thank you.
Congratulations on getting your press passes to the Libby hearings, I’m sure with the right reporting the truth can become known to the people and justice served. My biggest hope is that the larger truths that come from this bring about justice to all that rightfully deserve it.
I have increased my donation by $5000.07 in hopes that truth will be found and brought forth.

This is roughly the amount I sent (minus the $0.07) to various Congressional candidates all over the country in 2006 (except for people like James Webb and Victoria Wulsin who got considerably more). It’s amazing what a whole lot of us can accomplish for very little $$$.
Those of you who can only spare $10: Hey! you matter just as much as anyone. Democracy in action, ya know?
Heartfelt congratulations on this amazing coup.
I can’t wait! the truth will find a way out now that the ladies of the lake are on it.
I’ll keep looking for the snail mail addy so’s I can put in my .07 worth.
We need a thermometer…
Promise this is my last comment about the PayPal button & me. If I go to Digby’s site and hit the PayPal button, it immediately opens to his donation page with sign in below. I can’t do that on FDL for some reason. The donation page simply doesn’t pull up, only my sign in. Well, Christy said she’ll be posting a snail mail, so that may be my route.
What an entrance Steelthing. Congrats on your delurk.
$20.07 today, more later. What’s the total so far?
AAALLLLLL RIIIIGHT! Feel the FDL LOVE!
Here’s another $50.07.
TRUTH, JUSTICE and SUBPOENA POWER!
I’m in for $250.07. In return, I ask only for 2.5007 laser-beam sneers aimed at Darth Cheney. I’m not sure Christy is mean enough to carry out this mission.
Go Jane and Christy!
I haven’t seen Mary Matalin in over twenty years.
Maybe I can give her a call and ask her if she can put you guys up in the guest house.
I will be down in Memphis for the NMRC when the Libby trial starts and will see what I can do to help you out. Jane, The Ned Lamont coverage was good(especially loved the black faced Joe/can’t anyone in politics take a joke?)
Send Libby to Jail…Not to the Bank!

I love the idea of citizen-sponsored citizen journalism! Put me down for 50.07 USD. Contributing to this project almost seems like a blessing in itself. I get to pay for a service I truly value and help get the truth out at the same time. Thank you!

I imagine if I needed to take two months off my day job and live somewhere else, i’d need more than the cost of living at that somewhere else, because home is still happening. Flying between homes is something we don’t have to consider when just living one place.
I bought Marcy’s book earlier today, along with something that had been sitting in my “shopping cart” for a while waiting for me to have funds – Arianna’s book on courage. When I read later that Arianna had provided this help, I was thrilled that I’d supported her earlier in the day! What a neat dovetail. I’ll send my little money.07 on payday this Friday.

Aside from steelthing’s munificence, we’re past the $3400 mark. (I’m retaining appropriate skepticism for the moment.)
Hope RT’s skepticism not warranted but possibly is.
Does ANYone know if the public will be able to attend the proceeedings?
Just sent my 50.07! Goddess, it felt good!!!
