I think Gregg Sargent is calling Holy Joe a liar when he cites all those generals achin' for a surge:
The evidence is buried at the end of a Washington Post article about GOP division over the possibility of an escalation. It turns out GOP Senator Susan Collins went to the same meeting with these commanders that Lieberman. Here's how she characterizes these meetings to the paper:
[John] Sununu declined to say what he thinks about more troops, but one of his colleagues from the Northeast, Maine's Collins, said she was flatly opposed to the idea after discussing it with commanders and Iraqis during a trip with McCain, Graham and Lieberman.
"I don't think the addition of new American troops in a situation plagued by sectarian strife is the answer," Collins said. "I think more American troops will present more American targets."
This couldn't be clearer. Collins was in on the same discussions with the commanders that Lieberman was. And she emerged from those meetings "flatly opposed" to an escalation.
Yet Lieberman has now twice said that those conversations persuaded him of the rightness of his own call for an increase.
It's worth asking one more time: Why is Lieberman never, ever pressed by the media for his many inconsistencies and outright falsehoods on Iraq? Has a single reporter ever asked Lieberman why he's now calling for an escalation, when — as Atrios frequently points out — he said during his reelection campaign that he was "confident" that we'd be drawing down "significant numbers" of troops by now? And now that Collins has revealed that it's highly unlikely that the commanders said anything pro-escalation in those meetings with Lieberman, when will he be asked to back up his repeated claim that they're asking for more troops?
It's also worth asking if all those saps who bit down on the hook of that phony "Lieberman's website was hacked" story can work up a lukearm question in the wake of 3,000 dead. The Courant re-ran Lieberman's WaPo op-ed piece today. Since they did so much to convince Connecticut residents that nobody wanted the troops home more than Joe, and largely on that basis he was re-elected, might it be incumbent upon them to do a little prodding here?

The list is total bullshit if I’m not on it.
zed-free in 2007
So does CT have Voter’s Remorse yet?
Is Collins up for election in 2008? Or is that Snowe?
Perhaps the beginning of a drift toward a reality-based position.
neurophius @ 5
Given the level of popular support for the surge, one would *expect* only the wingnuttiest of wingnuts and warmongers to be in favor of it.
Lieberman pretends to be a Democrat the same way Bush pretends to be a Christian. Both of you, just stop.
How many military votes did Joey get in this past election????
Badwater @
7
The comparison is inaccurate. As far as I know, the Christians of Connecticut have never voted George W Bush out of their primary.
Joe sure makes me miss my daily Ned.
Yep. Collins is up for re-election in 2008.
She may be feeling some heat.

The ball is in my party’s, the Democrats court. They can stop funding the Iraq horror.
Eli @

I have little sympathy for the people who actually voted for him, just as I have little sympathy for the people who actually voted for Bush. You knew what you were getting. You just didn’t want to believe it.
Joe was listening, no doubt, to the voices in his own head which all sound just like George Bush’s. No main stream media reporter will call him on it because: A) they’re lazy; B) they aren’t that professional; and C) they can’t stand subjecting themselves to his whine.

Jane: The answer to your question is no. It is not incumbent for the Nutmeg Megaphone to do anything other than trumpet RGJoe’s WaPo lies and delusions.
But having seen it reprinted in their local paper, Connecticut voters have no excuse for ignorance about their recently re-elected Senator’s real views on “sacrifice” in Iraq, will they act? Will they prevail upon their Attorney General to tell them more about Lieberman’s flunky’s lies about the Lamont website hack? Will Nutmeggers demand an investigation of the slush fund that powered RGJoe’s primary margin? Will anyone in Connecticut sue for the tallies that showed Ned with exactly the same number of votes as Lieberman’s 2000 challenger?
Only voters can stand up for their rights. I did all I can to help, but Connecticut must save America from their junior Senator. I tried. It’s up to those who supported this man to call him on his lies and falsehoods. Soon.
… oh, and:

Lieberliar needs to suit up!
Hugh @ 14
omg, 707! no one ever calls him on his shite, cuz who’d wanna listen??!!
C’mon Jane, how hypocritical of you to engage in the very same magical thinking that you deride on your blog. I mean really, hoping that the media shitbags actually do their jobs. Hope is not a plan.

neurophius @ 11
I think that Linc Chafee’s loss was probably a big eye-opener for her. And she’s got to be realizing that Bush can make the political environment even more toxic for her in 2008. And she blew a lot of political capital putting Trent Lott back in power. She knows she could be in trouble.
Haven’t heard much from Hillary lately.
Keane and Kagan both would like a major increase for at least 18 months. These guys should not be let out by themselves and should be better medicated because what they are on now isn’t working.
TeddySanFran @ 16
I would love to see all of this come to a head and culminate in Joe’s ignominious removal from the Senate, right around late 2008…
Although if he caucuses with the Republicans, then more like ASAP.
Bush is gonna order more targets into Iraq, the hell with what anyone else thinks. “Unitary Executive power” to do what he wants, until and unless someone forcibly stops him.
The Murkin peeple gotta unnerschand.

Not only is she up for reelection, Tom Allen is rumored to be gearing up to take her down. Word is that he could pull it off.
Works for me.
raven @ 22
ha-ha! I bet she’s just delighted that Chris Matthews is bloviating about Rudy’s “secret plan” leaked to the NYDN.
From Novakula’s WaPo:
Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the only Democrat on the delegation (though he now calls himself an “Independent Democrat” after losing the Democratic nomination in Connecticut and being elected with Republican votes).
Even Novakula knows that Holy Joe is a Rethug.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 10
You’ve got that right.
If the Hartford Courant had wanted to really cover the Joe story via WaPo, it would have taken 37 pages.
Anybody find out why WaPo cut the comments on Joe’s op-ed off at 36 & 1/2 pages? By and large, they were politely strident, if somewhat repetitive.
Scarborough Country going on about how drunk and out of control Britney Spears was on New Year’s Eve.
A metaphor for the preznit? Drinking maybe, out of control without a doubt.
If you’re wondering about comments you might have left in Christy’s latest thread, they’ll still be there in the morning when the post goes up at the proper time. Sorry for the confusion.
Frank Probst @ 21
I wonder if Collins might paradoxically be safer than Chafee, due to the heavily Republican mix of seats up for grabs (21 to 12).
What I mean is, I think there were a lot of people in RI who *liked* Linc, but just couldn’t bear the thought of a Republican Senate. If the people of Maine don’t see Collins as pivotal to control of the Senate, they’ll be less likely to vote against her based solely on party affiliation.
All that being said, if she’s too pro-war and therefore out of step with the voters, then yeah, she’s toast.
Suzanne @ 28
He’s certainly independent from the Democratic party.
That does it. I saw Hillary’s name mentioned above. I’m off the wagon. F’k Hillary on the issue of Iraq and her total lack of courage and the ability or pig-headedness to do the right thing on this war.
Twisted Martini @ 20
Pass that one on to John Edwards, the anti-Obama. Good line
My contempt for Joe Lieberman will never subside, though it may occasionally be eclipsed by my contempt for George (F**k)W(ad) Bush.
Teddy,
I am absolutely heart sick about the MA leg. vote today to advance the anti-gay marriage amendment. There are still more hurdles for them to jump before it gets gutted, but today was a real set-back. It kind of feels like the night of Nov. 4 at Ned’s party.
Send us all some strength for the next round in the war. The haters won this battle, but it is not over. Still, it feels awful.
Eli @ 32
dayamit… preview is my friend.. that should have read: Even Novakula knows that Holy Joe is owned by the Rethugs.
So glad you are highlighting this, Jane. I’m also happy to see it in that WaPo article, even though it’s down there on the second page. Will these reporters ever learn to check up on Joe?
I called it out on my blog right after reading Lieberman’s editorial. Not just ’cause Joe and his buddy Dick Cheney are habitual liars, and actual reports like this AP story had said just the opposite
The other tip-off is that Lieberman’s “quote” from a colonel seems, how do we say… fake? See the colonel, had to sneak up to Joe after the meeting, regretting that he didn’t have a chance to speak up earlier. And the quote said nothing about more troops.
Joe is a big fat liar and the corporate media ought to check up on him more regularly.
Eli @ 32
I think the wire-tapping and the torture bill might be big issues for her, too. The South might fall for the “You’re supporting the terrorists!” screed. New Englanders, on the other hand, tend to value their civil liberties, and they’re not going to be happy about people snooping in on their phone calls.
Suzanne @ 38
Both are correct.
The Lurking Mod @ 31
You mean I can sleep late and still come up with the zed?
(not that I could sleep late anyway, I have to work ; )
Suzanne @ 38
The way you wrote it the first time is equally valid.
BobbyG @ 25
I’m with you, Bobby, and I fear for my congresswoman. I don’t think a Speaker of the House has ever faced a constitutional crisis like the one looming in her (our) immediate future: a President ignoring everyone around him to send more troops to a war we were lied into.
Pray for Nancy Pelosi, or light a candle, or love the Earth. Ask whatever spiritual center you hold dear to help our next Speaker in the days ahead. They may be dark for her, and for America.

I’d sure like to know what happened to the post about “surge and accelerate” that was up a few minutes ago! Is it going to return? What happened. I know I’m not crazy, it was there and I was the fourth and fifth comment.
RevDeb @ 37
Wasn’t this the last gasp of some righties who leave office, though? I thought their action today needed validation by the next Leg as well, and that was less likely in a year. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I took that as bloviating by bigots who had been defeated or retired, not wanting to be called faggot-lovers by their former constituents. Losers.
We’ll win in the long run, dear, we have to. It’s human nature. Don’t despair!
I keep getting emails about a National Conference on Media Reform. In Memphis starting thursday.

I was sooo tempted, but reminded myself that I am very unlikely to become a media activist, so I’d just be gawking and taking up space.

They needed 50 votes and got 62. There are 4-5 of the bad guys and gals that won’t be returning in favor of good guys and gals. That still doesn’t give us the numbers to defeat it in the next leg. session. If they get 50 votes next time then it goes on the ballot and there will be a blood bath in MA with big bucks and bad people coming into the state to stir up a real ruckus.
It could have been avoided. The leader of the senate let it go forward after the gov. elect put out a statement asking the leg. to stop it in its tracks. What we seem to have is a pissing contest between the new gov. and the senate honcho. And people’s lives are stuck in the middle.
We may yet win, but that doesn’t lessen the really sick feeling I have in my heart and gut over this.
And, what they are doing is against my religion! We covenant to affirm and promote the worth and dignity of every person. Period.
Can anyone seriously inform us exactly what role the DLC plays within the Democratic party? I haven’t a clue.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 65

In addition to the war, she voted for Alito. for the bankrupcy bill etc. etc. I will do everything I can to give switch her seat to a Dem. I have lots of Maine family who were once supporters but who are now fed up!

Eli,
Tom Allen will be a formidable opponent to Collins. She’s made a lot of votes that have not sat well with Mainers. The MBNA bill alone will hurt a lot of regular folks living on the edge of which there are many in Maine. If he doesn’t run against her, other well known dems in the state are ready to jump in.
She will not walk away with this one. Nor should she.

Good. I had a vague recollection of having said “But I thought she was supposed to be a *moderate*!” several times, but I couldn’t remember the specifics. I love Bush’s New Years resolutions on msnbc, especially these two:
I resolve to clear all of the brush at my Crawford ranch, except for that patch I use to hide from Cindy Sheehan.
“And finally, my fellow Americans, I resolve to announce an exit strategy, in which I will withdraw all of our troops from Iraq—through Iran.”
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16…../newsweek/
Lieberman makes my head hurt. What an asshat and embarrasment.
I wish there were some – “Don’t blame me I voted for Lamont” stickers to put on my car. (Though I still display my Ned Lamont sticker – so I guess that conveys my general attitude.)
BTW – there are a number of large vigils planned in Connecticut this weekend to draw attention to the shameful 3,000 American troups dead “mark” in Iraq. I hope MoveOn or Code Pink or some other group is organizing protests whereever Lieberman is hanging out these days.
Bless you, Jane Hamsher for shining the light of truth on this horrible Lieberman situation. Not one of the MSM is challenging that fraud, Lieberman. Not one!
With the blessings of most democratic leaders, such as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, Lieberman-as-Frankenstein and no longer a democrat, is allowed to say and do most anything. Seems there is no mention of denouncement or censure of him.
I fear he is out of his mind with ambition for some kind of national glory. He must be stopped in his tracks — and put in the corner! We have had enough of Lieberman and his lies.
dab from CT @ 119
The reason Joe’s article appeared in WaPo rather than the NY Times is because Joe thought he’d get a more sympathetic reading. Back to Fox Joe, I’m know Bill Kristol is extolling your, ahem, plan. But remember, Fox………the rest of the MSM is being held accountable by the public. Of course, I did listen to Mort Zuckerman on Joe Scarborough last night……he too seems to think killing more and more Iraquis is the same as “victory”, so maybe Mort will be happy to peddle that propaganda too. A warning though, Mort didn’t seem to have much luck convincing the rest of the panelists that “staying the course and then some”, is what events call for. What probably will work best for you is to have these little chats among your own small group of neo-cons. Talking like that in public will only get you rebuked for the delusionist, illusionist, double speak, war mongering propagandist you are. Hey Joe, got any matches?
Honestly? I wish HoJoe would just shut up.
Anonymous Liberal has a piece on HoJoe’s bizarro winning/losing Iran/Iraq strategy(?) and declaration of war on Iran in the op-ed.
