This is why we should NOT be in their face about partisanship, why we couch and frame our efforts around what is called for under the American Constitution, by what is good for Americans (see jayackroyd’s link above). WE as Democrats have not been elected to be partisan, but to serve the American public, and we should tell the public at large that we are doing just that.

It is up to us, though, to push back on anything and everything that is a Republican talking point and make it clear that it is their partisanship that cost them the confidence of the American public, and we should go so far as to say that it is the neo-conservative agenda that has done them in, so that angry Republicans like the one on C-SPAN feel comfortable with leaving their party and voting across the aisle. Helping the traditional conservatives save face by building a different “other” (neo-conservatives) will encourage them to see Democrats differently.

And in no fricking way am I suggesting that we cave on our objectives. We have to save this country, and we must do so with all due haste. But doing so means having a veto-proof majority in the Senate; we have to give a handful of Republican Senators adequate air cover to side with us in order to put the screws to Bush.

We have a failure to communicate if that’s the case.

I’m simply saying that the Democratic Party has a clear majority in Congress for the purposes of governing as the public asks; we are not there simply to b*tch-slap the Republicans, as tempting and appetizing as that may sound. We have an obligation to uphold and defend the Constitution, it’s as simple as that.

Yes we have a failure to communicate. Read the editorial (by Fred Hiatt, I presume) where my comment was originally posted.

Minnesota now has snow. My local area got about 9 inches but generally the state received about 3-5. Now it is melting.

As far as how the dems now in power should treat the republicans – treat them as an abuser who is saying he is sorry. OOOOOhhhhh so sorry. Won’t happen again.

If an abused person returns to the abuser, be wary and never trust they will act in good faith. And be ready to fight for your life.

House Republicans have begun to complain that Democrats are backing away from their promise to work cooperatively. They are working on their own strategy for the first 100 hours, and part of it is built on the idea that they might be able to break the Democrats’ slender majority by wooing away some conservative Democrats.

The Democratic majority is bigger than the Republican majority for the last three terms. That majority was variously labeled as solid, impregnable, in place for a generation at least.

The larger democratic majority is labeled “slender.” They’re setting us up for the divided democrats meme, even while they claim that bipartisanship is up to Pelosi.
