I guess I was doing something else yesterday morning while this discussion was going on. I’ve got a new blog that’s neither fish nor fowl - it’s neither strictly a national blog, nor a local one.

The blog is HoyerBlog, and is less than two days old right now, but it’s already got some material on Steny Hoyer that you’ll have a hard time finding elsewhere, plus some more standard links.

Hoyer’s my Congressman, so I’ve been building up an understanding of the man for a few years now, and of course he’s now a rather central figure, as the incoming House Majority Leader.

If you think such a blog might be useful, stop on by. Comments and constructive criticism are always welcome.

Washington State has some excellent local blogs, each providing a unique perspective on issues. Some of my frequent stops include:

Evergreen Politics

Horsesass

So I don’t break the link limit, I’ll add a few more in a separate comment.

One of my projects for 2007 is going to be getting Pacific NW Portal to start linking to the few, but growing number of progressive Alaska blogs.

Great post to start out the 2007 work year, Christy.

Let me know if I can help from this end.

I’ll see Andrew from NPI tonight, I’ll mention this to him and send him your way.

Hope you saw my comment that followed the one you just quoted. I’ll make sure Edward T gets your address.

lurking mod - if it were me, that’s what I would do… I would imagine everybody pretty much just highlights and copies the entire link and then pastes it… the preset http seems unnecessary…

I just highlight over it when I paste so it disappears. However, it makes it easier to see which is the URL box and which is the NAME box.

Thank you for the linkie love, Christy! :-)

Come to think of it, I spent a lot of time on this board 18 months or so ago (?), including getting very interested in the State Roots Project. That got me all the more motivated to jump into volunteering for the Mike Callaghan vs. Shelley Moore Capito (R, WV-02) race as soon as I moved to WV full time. That’s when I hooked up with Carnacki to make a commitment to local blogging.

You never know where a pebble’s ripples will land. Thank you very much to you, Pach and others here for your part in inspiring me to jump right in–as you say–to not wait around “for some leader to take the helm.”

Who knows? Maybe the pro-Democratic Party, pro-Progressive daily drip of news and analysis we provide at West Virginia Kossacks will help build the wave that propels the next Democratic challenger–finally turning WV-02 Blue again.

Good thread! It helps me get a fresher idea of what state blogs hhave become more of the go-to blogs.

Maybe I can return the favor by providing some vital ones that have been around a while.

Brian Linse used to run the biggest portal of blogs from all over. I went at it for a couple of years intensely, categorizing more than 1,400 by state or topic, but I haven’t updated for 24 months so I’m certain quite a few of these have gone bellyup (and many good newer ones -like Firedoglake and Glenn Greenwald - aren’t included.)

It still has life in it, especially providing indications of who’s been at the blogging game longest. (Not necessarily political, guys like Doc Searls (CA), Rageboy at EGR (CO), have been blogging since the beginning of time and Their blogrolls provide clues to other longtime bloggers, though many are more geek than political.

Among the earliest political ones were Libertarian Matt Welch (CA) and Ken Layne(NV). Ken’s not prolific anymore but if I recall correctly, he blogged the Dem convention… of 2000.

Now The Lefty Directory is da bomb of da bomb of directories. It was assembled by Kari Chisholm of BlueOregon, which I think is the oldest state blog using ‘Blue’ in its name.
(BlueOregon’s quite different as it has many politicians and journalists along with activists posting there). With Lefty Directory’s self-listing system, Kari achieved what I wanted to; I lacked the programming chops to achieve it.

And since Oregon is my home, the other essential state blog there is Carla’s Preemptive Karma. (even though Jane’s blog, technically, originates from Oregon, it’s national scope doesn’t make it a ’state’ politics blog, though it’s obviously an essential)

Here’s Rough & Tumble (CA) someone mentioned. One somewhat similar, but for Florida, is Florida Politics.

San Francisco? I can’t define that completely, but the oldest one I know of is Lisa Rein, who began blogging before 9/11. She’d certainly know many SF blogs as she’s a longtime code cruncher.

Texas? Someone else mentioned Charles Kuffner. I know he’s the best aggregator of Texas blogs, and a very accomodating guy. Write and ask him and I bet he’ll know a Dallas dozen.

A few state faves over the years?

In Rhode Island for the longest time, the only blog I could find was by Providence Journal’s Sheila Lennon, who puts out one of the cleverest named blogs: Subterranean Homepage News. There’s better ones for blue politics in that state now.

In North Carolina, Monkey Media Report is an old fave, and a longtime pro likely to know everything NC is Ed Cone.

As the exponential growth of new blogs started its vertical rise in the past two years, my old directory misses a lot of great ones that played key roles in the 2006 elections. The most revealing snapshot within it (scroll down the Topics section, in the right column) is the list of the Top 50 (most-trafficked) Progressive Blogs via Sitemeter, of January 7 2005…

Crooks & Liars was off the radar then (though it existed, and John Amato was crossposting at my group blog). Onegoodmove was the leading vidblog. South Knox Bubba still existed, as the prime TN blog. And my blog (American Street) was in the mix (before a disastrous host server move nearly killed it; family disasters kept me from fixing that for 8 months).

Good thread! It helps me get a fresher idea of what state blogs hhave become more of the go-to blogs.

Maybe I can return the favor by providing some vital ones that have been around a while.

Brian Linse used to run the biggest portal of blogs from all over. I went at it for a couple of years intensely, categorizing more than 1,400 by state or topic, but I haven’t updated for 24 months so I’m certain quite a few of these have gone bellyup (and many good newer ones -like Firedoglake and Glenn Greenwald – aren’t included.)

Bush was smiling as he led Betty Ford into the church for her husband’s funeral.

Is there ANYTHING he holds sacred?

I noticed that. Isn’t it a sign of sociopathic behavior to smile and laugh inappropriately?

I also noticed that Mrs. Ford did not look at Bush when he was strutting his stuff down the aisle with her. Nor did she communicate with Cheney during the ceremony in the Capital Rotunda Saturday evening. Body language says it all.
