One of the many lessons that we all should learn from the last election cycle is the importance of local involvement in elections. One of the great ways that this was accomplished outside the regular avenues of state party apparatus and national interest groups is through folks like all of us standing up, individually and collectively, and putting together a blog or some other means of organizing actions or getting out a coordinated message or any number of other ways of getting work done that needed doing.
Just think back a few months to what was ignited in Connecticut. Or Virginia. Or California. Or any number of other districts -- for state offices and federal offices, across the board. We tried to help with that with our Blue America work, for which Howie and Jacqrat and Siun and all of the wonderful campaign staffers and others involved, including ActBlue, deserve an enormous round of applause.
On DKos, SLJ had a diary on Sunday on the importance of organizing local action via a blog, and I wanted to be certain that it didn't get lost in the holiday break. This diary lays out some concrete information on the steps you can take to start a local blog of your own, if none currently exists in your area -- or about getting involved with an existing blog if one is already up and running.
The lesson of all of this is that we cannot wait for some leader to take the helm and do the things necessary to make our nation better and to strengthen the political apparatus of a party that we support. In order to move this nation and the representatives that we elect to serve us in a direction that we all want to see, it is up to us -- all of us -- to stand up and be the leaders we want and need right now.
I'd like to spend a little time talking about local blogs this morning. Please share in the comments a little bit about your favorite local blogs, or needs that you see for them. For our readers who are involved in local political activity, please share some of the successes and failures you've had. For folks who haven't gotten involved -- but want to do so -- feel free to ask some questions, and hopefully someone else reading here may have some great answers for you. Whatever successes we had in the last election cycle, there is still much more work to be done. This morning, I'd like for us all to take stock of what we each might be able to do in the months to come.
Never forget that the power to change this nation is in your hands.

I am an American mother
Protective of all I hold dear
My rights, privacy, and even my children
Being taken for reasons unclear
You’ve sold your souls to the devil
No longer willing to do what’s right
To hell with me and the land of the free
Special voting held late at night
Tell me what price my son brought
For the year that he spent in Iraq
Invading at will, orders to kill and
Ignoring him when he came back
Illegal wars with no end in sight
Bills lining your pockets the norm
No oversights, screw human rights
With Katrina, you killed – not the storm
My safety ignored at the borders
And you’re selling away my land
Crime after crime, I believe it’s time
For this mother to take a stand
Lady Liberty has joined beside me
Two mothers with children in need
We see through the lies and your corporate ties
What a shameless depth of greed
We are ready to take to the streets
Informed and within our rights
We won’t be alone, our numbers have grown
We The People, will bring forth the fights

Buckeye State Blog is the Ohio blog I try to follow. Its founder is about to start a job in, I think the state treasurer’s office, and recently handed over the reigns. But I was glad to hear the blog would continue.

He’s awful. Probably pissed that Ford slammed him after he couldn’t get back at him.
something very odd about jr talking about Ford’s military service.
OldCoastie @ 7
Is chimpy trying to make comparisons between Ford’s successes and eyerak?
oh, I see, jr’s talking about how many times Ford was criticized and still made the “tough” decisions…
I can’t make myself watch Commander Bunnypants. And we’re still, what–a week away?–from getting this stuff filtered through Jon Stewart’s wit.
shrub is far too punchy and energetic for speaking at a funeral…
good, he’s done…
I’m a fan of LA Voice, which was started (I make no claims of objectivity here, BTW) by my college roommate and built up almost single-handedly through his determination. It covers all things LA, and as such isn’t solely a political blog, but one that covers politics, culture, environment, media, and vision. Mack, the site’s founder, has a small group of regular posters (of whom I am, under my real name, one) and a clean, energetic style (he used to write for the LA Times among others). Certainly, if you’re out here in LALA land, worth a look.
shorter chimp - “Ford was a great Deciderer, like me. Ford made many tough decisions and did a lot of hard work, like me. Ford was a great military hero, like me. History views Ford in a favorable light, just like it will me.”

Just want to say we are having an election this year in Virginia, the whole state legislature is up for election, so we need more Democratic bloggers. The need is especially urgent in rural southside Virginia, but we need more in all parts of the state.
So if you live in Virginia, please think about starting a local political blog.
interesting, pastor is using the Beatitudes and talking about the schism with regard to sexuality and women within the church.
And Virginia is afflicted with Virgil Goode–I’m sure there are plenty of sane, decent Virginians who would like to get rid of this jackass…
OT Has anybody else wondered why the lynching was done by men who wore hoods? The men hanging Saddam had such lily white hands I am sure they were Americans. And don’t you think the verbal assaults were orchestrated to fire up the Muslims…so the “War on Terror” will be continued by the Bush’s? I expect this video was all done intentionmally to be sent around the world for Bush’s benefit. You know this lynching was done at the behest of the puppeteers of the Iraqii govt. Just the fact that the US “said” they wanted to postpone the hanging confirms to me just the opposite is true. I think the lynching was hurried thru to cover up the 3000th dead American. Timing, among other things, is just too convenient for this White House. White House just afraid Iraqiis might storm the prison and set him free. Also WH didn’t like the idea of people saying that we could just reinstall Saddam and things would be better. Also, not a bad thing for the Bush Crime Family to have their biggest witness killed.

Indeed there are, and beating Republican incumbents in this years General Assembly elections is a great way to put us in position to take Goode down in 2008 along with winning Va’s electoral college.
So I hope readers in rural Virginia will start blogging.

My favorite local (if 120 miles away — in Lafayette — can be called “local”) blog is Greg Peter’s Suspect Device.
Here’s a snippet of his outrage on the sponsorship of the Sugar Bowl:
I think it’s probably fair to say that 99% of the residents of South Louisiana hate insurance companies; to have Allstate sponsoring this year’s Sugar Bowl … words fail.
Renee in Ohio @ 18
yeah, virgil, looks like we’ve already been infiltrated, and it wasn’t by islamicists or whatever the flavor of the month word is just now. your state was infiltrated by george allen but he’s been taken care of now. do watch out for the brown people though, some of them are virginia citizens, and they know how to vote.

Here’s a local lefty economic and education blog I check in with pretty regularly — I got no dog in the blog hunt, although the fiance got me “blogging for dummies” for the Solstice gift exchange, so I’ve little excuse for not starting soon….
And for those of you in the Bay Area, don’t miss the Impeachment Flashmob, next Saturday, 10:30 am, Staircase 17 at Ocean Beach. CHS, this is right across the road from Beach Chalet, where we had lunch when you visited (and shopped!) SF! Thanks, got it. Much appreciated.
I like Bluehampshire, Bluejersey, and Blue Mass Group. They each have high quality writing and activism, but importantly are all building institutional memory, a culture of activism, and a state-based forum for progressives. Bluejersey’s ahead of the game on that front. Along with the CT blogs, there’s a great and new community of Northeastern bloggers.
There’s some good stuff in Michigan, Oregon, North Carolina and Washington state. Montana has a good reputation but I don’t follow that state’s politics. We desperately need more progressive blogging in California and New York. Florida has almost nothing as far as I can tell.
Here are a couple of local (other end of the state) blogs I read. This one is political,

I’m lucky - probably thanks to the Lamont/Lieberman battle - there are lots of great Connecticut blogs that most FDL folks are familiar with, including: Connecticut Bob, My Left Nutmeg, and ConnecticutBlog.
I wish there better(more)blogs in the DFW-Texas area. There are plenty in Austin(the only major liberal city in Texas) and a couple well-known in the Houston area. But none (that I know of) in Dallas???

Washington State has some excellent local blogs, each providing a unique perspective on issues. Some of my frequent stops include:
Evergreen Politics
Horsesass
McCranium
Pacific NW Portal (includes links to blogs in WA, OR, and ID).
So I don’t break the link limit, I’ll add a few more in a separate comment.
Here in Red Georgia we have Blue Athens and this blog Athens Politics

Maybe they’re just trying to offset the ‘liberal media’ that the GOoPers keep talking about, not that Time was ever particularly liberal. (Why I don’t read any of the newsmagazines any more.)
Bush was smiling as he led Betty Ford into the church for her husband’s funeral.
Is there ANYTHING he holds sacred?
My favorite local blog is 750 Volts. Kenton Ngo is a high school student who is sharper on Virginia politics than anyone who writes for the Washington Post. He’s also brilliant with maps.
I also like Waldo Jaquith in Charlottesville. Last year, he went down to liveblog randomly selected General Assembly committee sessions, with a lot of eye-opening information about how things work there. He also has a number of quite civil conservative commenters, which can produce an informative discussion. (Though some among them are not immune from mind-boggling conservative stupidity — in response to a post about Mary Cheney’s baby and the newly passed anti-gay amendment, one of them said blithely that surely she could set up some sort of contract for family matters. The rest of us had to explain slowly and clearly that no, the amendment you voted for, but apparently didn’t read, expressly forbids such arrangements.)
Hm. Can’t edit from Miami airport computer. Well see you guys late on the 5th. En route to egrDau in the DR with 4 suitcases full of humanitarian aid. Same suitcases that took stuff to Russia, they are acclimated.
I had some thots about health policy for the thread below, specifically that the government should -not- be price fixing for major drugs but that alas must await a future thread. I speak as a public health professional with a business background: you do not want to kill the market for medicine. But I think you all know I am not here for pharma, my heart is definitely for the patients. To be continued.

No. He’s never been capable of behaving appropriately at a funeral, probably because it’s not about him, so it can’t be very serious or important. During the memorial service for the 9/11 victims at the National Cathedral, he was mugging for the cameras until Laura noticed and nudged him.
There used to be a blog about California politics named Rough and Tumble. I can’t find it now.

The Long Beach Report, lbreport.com, is probably as much online newspaper as blog, but the guy who runs it can definitely get his snark on when moved to it.
He does a fabulous job of reporting on the Long Beach (CA) city council, mayors office, city hall, the port, and the airport. The port and the airport are huge issues in Long Beach because of pollution, noise, and traffic. He also does a fine job of unearthing back-room land usage deals.
He’s the best source on all things Long Beach, and really puts his camera on the sausage production line. And he’s a one-man operation.

I’m curious, would it be helpful if the first http that automatically appears was removed? If so, we can see if the techies could do that.
lurking mod - if it were me, that’s what I would do… I would imagine everybody pretty much just highlights and copies the entire link and then pastes it… the preset http seems unnecessary…
The Lurking Mod @ 79
I believe it would help.
Even though that was the first time I had used the link feature, I figured I needed to erase the http already there.
Lurking mod, it’s highlighted in blue, which usually means it will be erased as you add your own. For my second test, I deleted the /index.php at the end of the url, but not the highlighted http in the box,and it worked, so I don’t know which was the problem.
the http DOES though indicate what should be in that box the first time you try it.. and it is highlighted and easy to paste over…
Mommybrain, on your 1st link attempt, I saw 2 https… don’t know about after that…
Learning curves are fun to slide down. Whee!
The preeminent portal blog in Michigan is
Michigan Liberal
Most of the liberal blogs here are blogrolled at that site, as well as through LeftyBlogs (you’ll find a link to LeftyBlogs-MI at Michigan Liberal, too).
The candidates here have taken blogging seriously; Sen. Stabenow hired a blogger to do her IT, for example. I’m waiting to see who Sen. Levin hires, expect that he will do something at least as progressive as Stabenow. Some of the state candidates have also taken the neighbor outreach and applied it, as Deval Patrick did in MA.
Bloggers also get the attention of the Michigan Democratic Party and the Governor’s office; we will have our second Bloggers’ Caucus at the party convention next month, and are also meeting with the Governor in a couple of weeks.
It takes very little to get started; it takes very little to make a difference, too. I encourage any of you who have the time to put together a couple of decent comments to consider putting together a blog.
Rayne at 86 — While I’m thinking of it, do you have any good contacts in Levin’s office that you could recommend? I’d like to get Levin on for a chat at some point, if at all possible, and I’m not making headway at the moment with the folks I’ve spoken to — to do a chat like we did with Amb. Wilson. Any thoughts on who would be a good person to contact would be much appreciated, if you know of someone.

but delete the asterisks. between the > after you take out the asterisks! — (and all your html codes — or anything, for that matter!) in a notepad document in your tray when you are on line. Just save the notepad document to your desktop so you will always be able to find it. Then you can use the codes no matter where you are on the internets.
