In one of the most amazing community projects we've ever been involved in, we started out in September to raise the money to finance the publication of a book by Marcy Wheeler on the CIA leak investigation. Thanks to the generosity of readers of this blog and others, we're thrilled that Marcy's book entitled Anatomy of Deceit: How the Bush Administration Used the Media to Sell the War and Smear a Critic is now done and at the printer's.
Marcy writes a bit about it here, but suffice to say it's been an incredible effort on the part of a lot of people to get this book out documenting the events that lead up to the trial which starts this January. Jury selection begins on January 16, and to say we are looking forward to this trial would be a gross understatement. Please join us this Sunday, January 7 at 2pm PT/5pm ET when Marcy Wheeler will be here to discuss her book, the case, the process she went through in writing it and what she's anticipating in the weeks and months ahead.
And can I just say — it is an absolutely amazing book. I'm so proud to have been a part of it and many thanks and much love to everyone whose support and contributions made it happen.

Busted – a 2-fer – a new form of lurking and trolling!
I just read 6 books in 2 days.
I can’t wait for this one.
Richmond @ 1
I have my methods.
Best money I’ve ever spent!
Can’t wait to read it.
Proud have contributed on day one of the Ask.
_
LOL!
Wow.
Jane, you really, really are hot stuff. It’s amazing to see how far this has all come in 18 (or so) months.
Did you send a copy to the White House?
Marcy!
Ok, I 1 click pre-ordered at Amazon and didn’t read anything. When do I get it?
Yay! Can we pre-order?
I am looking forward to the Book Salon.
Any idea if books ordered from Amazon will arrive before Sunday?
Will it be in any independent bookstores?
O/T. Watching the ceremony taking place at the Ford Library and thinking much more consideration should have been given to Mrs. Ford who looks completely exhausted.
Cool. A book salon where I won’t be the only one who didn’t read the book.
Well I had to go back to Amazon and read. It said the book would ship 1/28 it would be in my hot little hands on 1/31.
Can we have another book salon in February? I’m gonna read this one.
jane, the accomplishments you’ve gathered here at the lake are mind boggling
you ms hamsher have made a differance

Proud have contributed at some point along the way.
For Christmas, I finally got copies of “Lapdogs”, “Crashing the Gate”, and “What Would a Patriot Do” … and my birthday is in November. :( Lean times are no fun, but at least we haven’t had to give up the TOOBZ connection (yet).
Can we get some copies rushed over to Fitz & Co.? Make sure they didn’t miss anything…
BobbyG @

There then too, and since, reminding others to help…
Now, we’ll remind everyone to BUY, READ, SHARE
and certainly, join Marcy at the Book Salon
Just in time for our Presidents’ Day gifting needs!
If anyone wants to read Lapdogs & crashing the gate, I can ship them media mail and you can return them to me in Chicago in August…
Sally @ 16
Mrs. Ford looks a lot more tired than even Nancy Reagan did.

How much would it cost to send a copy to ever soldier serving in Iraq? Their support for the Lieberman/McCain War has recently gone below 50%, according to Army Times.

If my experience with Greenwald’s HWAPA is any indication, it’s worth calling your local bookstore today and letting them know you’d like to order a copy…or two…or more. Buzz is a good thing.
Having said that, it’s also worth noting that Amazon contributes to FDL for every order placed using the link on the FDL front page.

Yep, we’ll have a couple of book salons on this one. We want to get the word out, and I think it will be interesting for Marcy to discuss the process she went through writing it.
I actually think it will be available by the time the trial starts, despite what it says about the official publication date.
This is from an article in 2004, which I never heard about until today. I was with a member of the military recently home on leave and when I asked why he voted Republican, he said because he was told to. Job security. But I didn’t know this:
This year two states, Missouri and North Dakota, will allow ballots to be filed via the Internet. The plan is controversial in that those voting will have to sign a waiver acknowledging that their votes won’t be confidential. The ballots are e-mailed to the Pentagon, which then prints them out and faxes them to yet another company which then forwards them on to the local election officials. Critics have warned that such a system is rife for corruption and could subject enlisted voters to inappropriate influence by military superiors that will have access to votes cast in the open.

RBG @ 28
Bricks and mortar presence is important so please do, by all means, call.
Jane – Additional information I need to help my local bookstore find/order the book would be appreciated.
Who is the publisher?
O/t -
For those who watched the ceremonies today on MSNBC, did anyone else notice Chris Matthews ongoing fascination AND displeasure with the fact that a caisson was not used to transport Ford’s body? This man has a serious case of the weirds!
Having written several books, I can say that I am in awe at the speed with which this was done. I’ll bet it is good too. Congratulations to all involved.
Most excellent! I’ll try to get Common Good Books (Garrison Keillor’s new store in St. Paul) to carry it.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 32:
Amazon gives it as ‘Vaster Books’ .
Powell’s doesn’t have it, unfortunately.
Just curious: the title in the image and the title in the text do not match. Does it end in “smear a critic” or in “out a spy”?
Congratulations to Marcy Wheeler, FDL and everyone else who keeps pushing the dirt back from this story.
‘…MacGuffin man, MacGuffin man…‘

Dying to get my hands on this. We need to rush the printer.
This is almost as bed as littleprop waiting for the next Harry Potter.

Wow, good catch. Even the Amazon site isn’t consistent between the text title and the graphic title.
Will George Clooney be the narrator for the audiobook version?
darkblack, that is one frightening image.
Don’t do children’s books, ‘kay? ;)
Go Marcy!

I meant to ask you, did you ever get the ragdoll cat? I’d never heard of one before.
Can’t wait to get it. I’m going to ask the small local independent book stores here to order it. Gotta keep them in business.
On another note, the bigots in MA won a skirmish today. The bad guys got enough votes in the Constitution Convention to advance the anti-gay marriage amendment into the next legislative session. If the next session approves it, it goes on the ballot in 08. Gotta kill this next go round. Fortunately some of the bigots retired or were voted out and won’t return on Thursday, but not enough.
DAMN.
Thanks all – One Bookstore contacted and I will call my local library in la manana.
Any way to help protect our new author upfront from pushback that will surely come?

Tell you local bookstore to contact Publishers Group West (Vaster Books’ distributor) at 1-800-788-3123 to order. There’s always Ingram and Baker & Taylor as well.
Borders has the book online, and so may be carrying it in their stores if there’s enough buzz or pre-order activity.
Congratulations, Marcy. Excellent work, well-done.
All my love,
Slothie
OT. I just used my intertoobs to order a cartful of groceries.(I’m sick-cough)
Someone is going to go all over that store, pick up everything, bag it and deliver my oreo mint cookies right to my door. For a $5.00 fee.
I love the internets. I may not be able to do your fancy schmancy linkies- but i can get food with my internet.
Seconded.
Jane, Please tell me Marcy is going out on book tour that includes California. Our small fine arts museum on the central coast would be so thrilled to present her for an appearance and book signing at our popular Friends of the Museum’s authors Literary Salon. As further incentive allow me to boast Markos and Jerome’s visit last spring was standing room only and our local bookseller set up a table, selling out their entire CTG inventory. Am confident Marcy’s appearance would prove equally successful.
I forgot all about that donation and I have a Border’s gift card to use from Christmas. Let’s see.
One rubber stamp, one gate crashing manual and a text on anatomy.
Can’t wait to see what 2007 brings.
Cujo359 @ 50
I stopped by a Borders and got some gift certs for my folks at X-mas.
The one I went into leaned pretty hard right when it came to the Political section.
I ended up getting a copy of The Federalist Papers.
Going to have to read that one real slow.
Yay!
Oh, and since I missed the Book Salon thread on Sunday, I’d like to nominate Chris Mooney’s excellent The Republican War on Science. It’s important, and well-written, and the subject is near and dear to my heart.
Tom @ 56
If you’re looking for Gray’s Anatomy, it’s often in the cutout section at Barnes and Noble. Might want to check there first. Note that I’m refering to the text, not the TV series.

ot, but plame-related: up in santa cruz over the holidays i read an obit on free-speech lawyer, Paul Sanford, an apparent suicide. the article mentions his lawsuit against the owner of a local radio station for breach of contract and defamation. a disagreement “that started after Sanford used a KOMY press credential to join the White House press corps and asked then-press secretary Scott McClellan if the administration’s leak of Valerie Plame’s identity was tantamount to treason.”
“it’s unclear what will happen with the case, which was set for trial in February.”

oooh. good day-trip possiblilities from the East Bay. (any excuse to visit Point Lobos…)
Bustednuckles @ 57
The one near me is pretty balanced. You can gorge on wingnuttia or dirtyhippyism, whichever your tastes are. Last time I was there I noted that there are now two books out parodying Coulter’s Godless. They had numerous copies of the book that inspired those parodies, also.

There was a change in the subtitle after the listing was sent to Amazon and now we wait for the bureaucracy to work its magic. With the holidays, the bureaucracy moves very slow.
Margot @ 45
No, not yet. We have not moved out from the maritial residence yet and the labradors would eat the kitty for a snack. Also, I hoping Littleprop forgets about it. I am sort of burnt out on pet ownership for a bit.
ReneND @ 48
Yeah, seriously. In our state candidate-recruitment meetings, I’ve been hearing plenty of tales about Congressman Tom Davis’ habit of using his connections to get people fired if they’re planning to be Democratic challengers to various state-level Republicans. And here we’re dealing with Repubs with an even higher reputation for viciousness.
Bush ‘to reveal Iraq troop boost’
US President George W Bush intends to reveal a new Iraq strategy within days, the BBC has learnt.
The speech will reveal a plan to send more US troops to Iraq to focus on ways of bringing greater security, rather than training Iraqi forces.
The BBC was told by a senior administration source that the speech setting out changes in Mr Bush’s Iraq policy is likely to come in the middle of next week.
Its central theme will be sacrifice.
OT – Justice Dept. has blown off Leahy with his request for info on the detention and interrogation of suspected terrorists… (via Muckraker)
gonna get very interestin’…
BTW, MArcy might want to have a chat with her publishers. I just called BArnes and Noble to pre-order and although the expect it in (they had a shipment ordered already —yeah!!!)they said 1/28 is the release date so they cannot sell it before then even if they have it.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 67
I liked Digby’s take on this.
looseheadprop @ 65
The breed may have changed over the years, but while I was growing up we had both Labs and cats. They got along fine. Of course, we had lots of room for them. I think if they understand that the cats are part of the pack they’re happy to hang with them.
OldCoastie @ 68
It’s gonna get more than interesting. We will need lots and lots of popcorn. Oh damn! I just started aa diet. No popcorn for me. Sigh
here is the link for rosalind’s comment re Paul Sanford
Cujo359 @ 71
This bunch is very loving but very physical. I won’t tell you what happens to the squirrels and racoons. Also we have doggie doors all over and live in a nature preserve. Between the owls and the falcons (and we have been spotting a golden eagle intermittently) the kitty would not be safe.
lhp – unsalted, unbuttered popcorn is on anyone’s diet ;-)

All these American soldiers dead and and yet to be killed in Iraq. On top of that the BBC reports that over 1,000 Iraqi civilians are be slaughtered every month.

Yes, you can preorder at Amazon, B&N, Borders, or your local bookseller.
If you give any bookseller this number: ISBN 0979176107 they can preorder a copy for you. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISBN for more info on ISBN.)
If it’s easier for you to order online, the FDL Amazon link kicks back a very tiny portion to FDL (probably not close to what it costs Jane to host a Book Salon). It also raises the title’s visibility on Amazon.
However, independent booksellers also track sales. If the book is generating preorders, it will get better visibility in bookstores, and more requests for author interviews.
This ought to be one hell of a read, on top of being a public service.
Redshift @ 66
The same guy who put someone on the no-fly list for telling him (in the market parking lot, I understand) what they thought of his vote on the anti-habeas bill, yes (see Making Light, the thread about gunboats on the Great Lakes)? Misprision of office, maybe? Violation of his oath of office, for sure. Serious vindictiveness, oh yeah!
Nancy Pelosi just stuffed her shoe so far up Dennis Hasterts ass that he can taste her pumps.
No sorry Dennis, you can’t have the minority rights that you denied the Democrats.

P.S. Ban Ki Moon, the new UN Sec. General is going to be a nice US friendly lackey.
looseheadprop @ 74
I’ve seen how Labs treat varmints. The racoons would be a problem for the kitty though, in addition to the other hazards. Whenever racoons showed up in my yard, my cat always wanted to have a go at them. He would have been very lucky to survive, and he was a feisty bugger.
looseheadprop @ 82
:~)
…but that would be presumptuous. maybe we need impartial spew-derators to make that call.
OT note on popcorn, at a movie theater a while back the spouse and I were taking our large tub towards the show and noticed a fellow heaping pickled jalapenos onto his popcorn. I stopped to add a bit of salt and he noticed that I noticed his choice of seasonings. Try it he says, it’s good.
Is this something I’ve been missing? Or is it a bit odd? I don’t get out much.
jeffreyw @ 91
Well, some people like cheese-flavored popcorn, too.
Since it’s been bred to be better-popping, popcorn has pretty much lost any flavor it had, so you can get away with just about anything on it. Pickled jalapenos are possibly extreme, though (but I’ve been known to put diced Ortegas in brownies).
rosalind @ 61
None of us who knew Paul, and he was beloved throughout the Monterey region, believes for a minute he committed suicide. The horror occured early on Christmas Eve in Seaside on the Monterey Peninsula when he fell to his death from a local hotel. Paul’s home with his cherished wife and small children is across Monterey Bay near Santa Cruz, nearly a hour’s drive away. It is a great loss to the country we won’t soon recover from, if ever. We just hope and trust a thorough investigation is underway but if there is the local papers haven’t reported anything other than the original story that speculated it may have been a suicide. Simply ridiculous – he was expanding his law practice with a Monterey office and new partner and close family friend. Our local daily paper, the Monterey County Herald, covered the story that can be found online under date 12/26/06. Sigg.
Roselyn, if you still have the Santa Cruz newspaper would you kindly send me their name and date in the comments in the hope I can retrieve it online. Thanks in advance. I remain stunned that the national media hasn’t reported on his tragic and unexplained death. He reminded us all of Patrick Fitgerald in every way and his untimely death begs for a top drawer professional inquiry from outside our oh so provincial llocal media.

If this goes as well as I think it might, Marcy had better get working on her next book. I haven’t seen this one yet, but given the capacity of BushCo and the law firm of Cheney, Addington, Yoo, and Associates for mischief-making, surely Marcy could find something more to say . . .

Anyway, just bought the book, and I can’t wait until it ships!!!
This is a late comment, but here goes:
How about a virtual book signing for those of us who gave here during the original fund raising? You know, Marcy could be online with a stack of books and respond to bloggers request for some sort of personal inscription?
How about that?
If you DO want to get this from an Independent Bookstore, you can get it from mine! Marcy and I met in the early days of the Dean campaign, and both live in Ann Arbor, MI. I have a glbt/feminist bookstore, that (as a result) has a leftist political niche, as well.
I’m sure we can arrange Marcy to sign books for you (we’re working out a non-virtual book signing right now). In our checkout section there is a place for “Comments”. Place in that section your inscription request, and we’ll try and get her to do that!
As to WHEN its available, I am currently expecting it in the store on or about 1/18.
