Glenn Greenwald emailed me this morning to console me (console himself?) in the face of the news that we have yet once again been beaten out by Markos, this time receiving the "honorable mention" award for Twenty Most Annoying Liberals in the United States by Right Wing News.
It's the Miss Congeniality loser consolation prize and cold comfort I might add, the equivalent of looking a guy in the eyes and telling him you hope you can "still be friends." Always the bridesmaid, never the groom.
Fuck that.
What did I do wrong? Was I not shrill and caustic enough, did I not do enough to mock Michelle Malkin and her histrionic halucinations, did I not post the requisite number of offensive images, sing kumbayah in the comments section too few times or was it the fact that I simply never compared George Bush to Hitler? Is it just that my megaphone is not as big as Markos's, or am I not being taken seriously because I am a woman?
I am quite certain I said "fuck" more than Markos and Glenn combined, and as we all know this lack of civility is in the eyes of the warmongers the most grevious of sins one can commit when discussing with their oh so serious selves their genteel war. I should get some credit for hosting a pack of foul-mouthed, Satan-worshipping homos. "Wingnut welfare?" That was mine. Where is the justice in the world?
There is some consolation in the fact that Keith Olbermann took the top spot, and really, you can't compete with the king. But quite honestly, I think I was robbed.

That was Suzanne thinking about the civil suit. Actually I don’t think Bushco is afraid of the civil suit per se. I always thought the civil suit was started as a collateral means of getting the true story out in case Bushco found a wau to shut down the Fitz prosecution.
Now that we have Congress, well, there’s lots of ways to get the story out. I think in some instancces the civil suit may have fallen off the radar a bit.
Not that I think the Wilson’s should be discouraged from persuing it, I think they should stick with it.

They are annoyed by Sullivan because the consider him a traitor.
They are annoyed by Olbermann because he is the surprise broadcast/cable media guy (except for Cafferty) who isn’t cowed–and it makes them sick that he is successful. Same for David Gregory.
They are annoyed by the Dixe Chicks because they took the hits and keep on ticking. Their popularity enrages the right-wingers.
They are annoyed by Murtha and Kerry because they are forceful and despite all the noise and attempts to deep-six them they are not going away. Same for Al Gore. There is not a direct equivalence between Edwards and Kerry. Edwards is running for president. Kerry may or may not run but one way or the other he is making them uncomfortable.
I am really impressed that they are annoyed by Mike Malloy. He is so much less public than some other radio hosts. They must be especially annoyed by him because despite the Air America setback he also is not going away.

My extensive research has uncovered what may be a reason why the ReichWing failed to accord Jane Hamsher full “annoying liberal” status. On Oct. 3, Jane uttered the following phrase:
“George W. Bush, President of the United States”
To refer to him in this manner, rather than “Chimperor” or “Commander Codpiece” or “Junior” or worse, subtracts from one’s annoying liberal score.
It was, no doubt, a careless slip, not a conscious manifestation of a belief that Georgie deserves that title, indeed, not an acknowledgement that he has ever been lawfully elected to that office. But to the wingnuts, the use of this honorific, even once, tarnishes one’s image as a truly annoying liberal. It is cause enough to relegate one to the “honorary mention” category.
While it is true that Jane, in the same sentence, referred to Bush as “The Great Decider,” that utterance did not mitigate her loss of annoying liberal status in the minds of the wingnuts. No, they failed to see the irony in Jane’s use of that term; they took it as a compliment to the preznit. That sealed Jane’s fate.
For the record, I would note that other FDL bloggers including Christy Hardin Smith, Scarecrow, Pachacutec and even TRex use the term “President Bush” or otherwise pass up opportunities to refer to him in a shrill or caustic manner. That fact no doubt explains why none of them even earned honorable mention status from the wingnuts.
So, Jane, watch your tongue over the coming year. Hurl whatever insults you wish at the resident of the White House, but do not under any circumstances call him “President of the United States.” It may not be too late for redemption.

My Joe Lieberman-loving (God help me change her mind) mother likes Al, now that she’s seen An Inconvenient Truth.
Well, I dunno why everyone is so surprised. I saw this coming. It was the little things at first, like apologizing for the Clinton/Lieberman metaphor even though it was spot on, and then confessing on the net about violating speed limits in Connecticut. But it became more obvious with her appearance on KO, when instead of sounding like a screaming hippy/harpy, she was calm, rational, intelligent and gracious, not to mention stunning. [Oh, yeah, nice hair.] But the big clue was when she changed a couple of words on a post just so we could SPOTLIGHT it to the Kansas City Star or some tv station in Tennessee. Or maybe it was at Yearly Kos, where instead of screaming anti-fascist hate she organized the most intelligent, informative and inspiring panel not just on the Plame matter but the whole theme of a lawless regime.
But for me it was that moment when many of us first met her in person, in that small room at Yearly Kos. Christy was introducing people, but Jane was literally too shy to be recognized when Christy introduced her. That’s when I knew that underneath that don’t-tread-on-me exterior was this very reserved, decent and lovely human being that you couldn’t help but be drawn to. We all saw it; we were all hooked.
Annoying? About the last adjective I’d ever use on the lady.
I’m glad you didn’t make their silly list, Jane. But if it makes you feel any better, I gotta tell you the same thing I told you in August; you kicked some serious ass last year, like the entire the-war-is-not-an-issue Democratic mindset, not to mention shaking up the I-can-be-a-lazy journalist-if-I-want-to media. And they don’t know what to do about it except to pretend you’re not there and try not to draw too much attention to someone who’s changing the rules right before their eyes.
