One of the reasons I got rid of cable and eventually television altogether is that I was paying for 90 channels all showing the same shit. Ed Sullivan was a VARIETY show. Like…the internets! It was great. If TV brings on a show that in one hour, that presents Maria Callas, spinning plates, a hanging Saddam, Senor Wences and a live Beau Brummels number, I might tune in.

Yes, indeed. And, since he’s still in US custody, that means that Bush, in effect, gets to sign his execution order by turning him over to the Iraqis for hanging. Wonder if he’ll do that while he’s still in Texas, on familiar ground, so to speak?

Didn’t he also have Abu Gonzales with him to advise on the legality of ignoring last minute appeals?

4 complete Beatles on Ed Sullivan shows. With all the acts, the commercials, etc.

I love the Beatles (and this DVD), but the almost total lameness of the ESShow is shocking!

Otherwise, I’m not interested in what Howie has to say.

Never ceases to amaze me how much is ascribed to the baby boomer generation by those who ~~missed out~~ weren’t there. Har.

That said, I fucking hated Ed Sullivan and never watched him. Nowadays, the landlord provides 214 channels of satellite teevee, and we almost never turn it on. I also think the proliferation of “distributed media” is just dandy, which obviously means I’m cool, so buy my book. Intergenerational hissy fits are just stupid, anyway. I no more want to hang out with people my own age than have annual rectal exams, so lighten up — and don’t forget to save the best dope for your elders!

Who gives a fart what Howard Kurtz says, anyway??? You guys just got suckered again. The trick is in expressing what you ARE, not what you’re not.

Hell, I’m still working on that one.

there are a lot of humorous things about this, but one of the best is that Ed Sullivan was a powerful broadway columnist who made his bones taking on the media hegemony of Walter Winchell.

That said, some of the YouTube videos are viewed at levels that compare very nicely to the mass broadcasts of Sullivan, particularly since they’re not the only game in town.

If the staff of CNN lose their jobs, they can always form a roving lynch mob. Did whoever said it have a mad gleam in his/her eye? A cleric I knew always used to say that technology changes, but human nature doesn’t (not a progressive!). So God help us: we’re still barbarians underneath with all this mad science at our disposal.
