I read David Ignatius this morning, and I had to let it sit for a bit — because "arrrrrrrgh!" was just not enough of a response. While I was thinking of something a little more comprehensive, Brad at SadlyNo! beat me to it. And it is a thing of beauty. To wit:
Bush says he doesn’t care what happens now to his poll numbers, and I believe him. He broke through the political barriers a while ago. I sense that, as he anguishes about Iraq, he has in mind the judgment of future historians. He said it plainly in an interview in October with conservative talk show host Bill O’Reilly: “Look, history is interesting. I read three books on George Washington last year. And my opinion is that if they’re still analyzing the first president, the 43rd president ought to be doing what he thinks is right. And eventually, historians will come and realize whether . . . the decisions I made made sense.”
And that’s what really matters, is Bush’s place in history. It doesn’t matter how many lives are ruined. All that counts is that future historians see him as The Decider. Clearly, this is a sensitive soul who deserves our sympathy. HE’S BLEEDING RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES, PEOPLE!!! HE’S LIKE A… A… A JESUS LUTHER GANDHI!!
What makes reality TV gripping is that it’s all happening live — the contestants make their choices under pressure, win or lose.
Plus, there’s lots of people who are dying. But at least David thinks it makes for thrilling drama. (emphasis mine on the bold)
Bingo. What I would have said had I not been so enraged. And disgusted. And pissed off that Junior constantly gets a pass — and that pundits like Ignatius continue to give the man a pass for the consequences of his own decisions and actions. I mean, come on! I'm all for compassion and empathy, but hello…fawning worshipful enabling nonsense? No thank you.
As if that weren't enough snark for the morning, this YouTube also hit my in-box. It seems that Rep. Charlie Rangel is doing some sort of bit with Laughing Liberally coming up on December 30th in NYC — and they've done a promo video for the event. With a Bush impersonator. Click here for more amusement.
Thought we could all use a small chuckle this morning. Anything making you giggle today? Anything at all?

Nope. Not laughing here. Wish I could but damn, that Ignatious nonsense literally made me break a coffee mug. I really cannot stand these idiots in the press any longer.
I am waiting for the reaction of Rangel&co when they get serious about investigations….

David Ignauseous makes me sick.
Dubya actually thinks that history will judge him as a great American president–what a joke! Talk about megalomania and delusions of granduer. Because he thinks he’s accountable to no one he needs to be impeached!

Who said that fellatio isn’t still happening in the Oval Office?
Before now, Bush has never suffered consequences for his choices. Can this now be changing for this golden child? If so, he has no idea what to do. That could be the cause of this alleged stress, but I doubt it. I think that the heavy drinking is catching up with him.
Twisted Martini @ 10
…got a chuckle on that one ,twisted….
One book that really explains a lot about Bush is Justin Franks book “Bush on the Couch”. Franks uses profiling techniques he used at the CIA to profile Bush. Read it while on vacation in Canada summer 2004. Went home and worked about 1000 hours on the Kerry Campaign because the book scared the sh*t out of me.
What we need to do is have Unitarian Jihad charge into the nation’s editorial rooms, toss a bottle of patchouli and take everyone out with a group hug.
After all this time, how can anyone refer to Bush as a strong character?
I’m sorry, but am I supposed to feel pity for Bush? Is that what he is suggesting? This is all his own doing. He has been an arrogant, petulant, underachiever who surrounded himself with syncophants and enablers for six years, and those flaws are finally coming home to roost. If he had actually seeked out other opinions instead of only talking to those who agreed with him, he might have developed some insight and perspective. Feel sorry for him?..Not on your life. He is getting what he justly deserves. And whatever he gets, it is a far cry less then the thousands he has sent off to die in a meaningless war.
Watched “Little Miss Sunshine” with the family last night. That’s still making me laugh.
OT: gotta give props to Frontier Airlines. My eldest took one of our surfboards back up to the Bay Area this AM and the counter agent “comped” us on the excess fee with a “Happy Holidays.
Now back to our regularly schedule anguish.
awpguy at 17 — And there you have the very reason why I got to “arrrrrgh” and had difficulty getting beyond it after reading this op-ed. I’m all for having some compassion, but it has to be tempered with a realistic assessment of where things are and how we got there. And Ignatius just flat out ignores any culpibility or rationale for the “torment” that Bush is dealing with other than “oh, poor man.” No “tortured soul of his own making.” No “ought to be going through some agony having run away from reponsibility for this mess for months.” Not one moment of asking for any sort of accountability whatsoever — just a sort of mishmash of hugs and smooches and pity parties and the like.
ARRRRRRRRGH!
I haven’t stopped chuckling about this since my brother in law sent it to me. It’s easily the best work Justin Timberlake has ever done.

Tim at 18 — I’ve heard that film is fantastic, but we haven’t had a chance to see it yet. Good to hear from yet another source that it is a good pick. Will have to add it to the Netflix queue. If you’re referring to the O’Leilly WH interview with W, I think the specific term is falafellatio….
Just saw “Blood Diamond.” It was riveting, emotional, tragic, and well acted. It will be with me for a while. I did have to cover my eyes at times, so not for the faint of heart. My vote is it is worth seeing.
They showed previews of “We Are Marshall” and it is enticing.
I’ll put in a pretty good word for “Pursuit of Happyness” with Will Smith and his son. Could have been a tearjerker but wasn’t.

fallafellatio!!! LOL 707 0uch. that made my day.
Martyrs can be very dangerous. Perhaps this how Bush views himself. And yes Junior does get a pass. And as far as Iraq and the Middle East is concerned, so does a certain Democratic Senator from New York. It’s all so absolutely infuriating!!!
really, bush “anquishes” about when he’s gonna be able to chop trees…that’s it
I want accountability for everyone, and I mean everyone, who voted to invade Iraq and cannot admit that error in judgment and call for a withdrawal from Iraq.
I’d like to be a set designer for a movie filmed in WV. Just point the damn camera anywhere. It would take a real star to outshine the set.
OFG at 34 — It is an awfully pretty state that I live in, isn’t it? How was your trip to see the grandchild? Hope you had much fun. :)
Congress should limit military funding for Iraq to evacuation.
The StarTribune ran an op-ed proffering Bush might be like Truman. At first this made me throw up in my mouth a little, but then I started laughing at how low the bar is being set for Bush the Lesser.
Looking into Truman’s presidency, one isn’t exactly inspired. I think the Berlin Airlift and desegregating the military are his high water marks as president (his war profiteering stuff was as senator). Other than that he’s a pop culture figure (”Dewey Defeats Truman”) with very little substance behind him.
As for Bush being thought of more highly as time goes on, well no. Truman tried to do some positive things but failed. Bush has engaged in undermining the Constitution, seizing dictatorial powers and showing absolutely no compassion for anyone. Along with squandering America’s superpower status on his war of choice, Bush also lost an American city along with the towers in New York.
Those are failures that look worse as time goes on, not as some triumphant actions of a brilliant but misunderstood leader. He will be the worst president in this nation’s history.

W in the O’Leilly interview:
“Look, history is interesting. I read three books on George Washington last year. And my opinion is that if they’re still analyzing the first president, the 43rd president ought to be doing what he thinks is right. And eventually, historians will come and realize whether . . . the decisions I made made sense.”
reality of what historians will write about W:
Hossam Shaltout, a former political adviser to Saddam Hussein’s son, said today that before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March of 2003, Saddam expressed his intent to yield to all American demands, but that the Bush administration refused his offers, according to a press release on Yahoo News.
Shaltout is a Canadian citizen who claims he was beaten repeatedly by U.S. officers while in an Iraqi detention camp, under suspicion of once having been a “right hand man” for Saddam Hussein.
“Saddam was willing to yield to all American demands, announced and unannounced, to reach peaceful resolution,” said Shaltout, “but the Bush administration, including Elizabeth Cheney, undersecretary of State, David Welch, the U.S. ambassador in Egypt, and Gene Cretz, his political attache, did not respond to his offers.”
Shaltout claims that in March of 2003, just as he was to read the Iraqi government’s official reply to the Bush ultimatum on Al-Jazeera, the broadcast was interrupted and “the plug was pulled on the transmission.” He also maintains that later, when the Americans arrived in Baghdad, he offered his assistance to U.S. military officials, but instead was arrested by Marines who went to his hotel suite and took his documents.
Left unmentioned in the press release are Shaltout’s claims that he was tortured and abused during his imprisonment.

Christy, when I lived in Virgina we’d often go to Harpers Ferry to swim in the quarry. The water a beautiful turqoise color and the quarry very isolated. We’d bring sleeping bags and sleep in the cow field (someimes waking to find one standing over us, looking puzzled). One of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen was a winter orchard off of Rte. 9, at sunrise, ice glistening from the bare branches as far as you could see.
We also got arrested for trespassing when the quarry changed hands and the new owner sought to limit his liability regarding crazy people swimming in his pond. We sat in the back of the paddy wagon and sang Janis Joplin songs all the way to jail in Charleston (there were 10 of us). The jailers brought us sandwiches from the deli across the street and asked our advice on what music to get their kids. WV rocks.
The proof will be in the pudding. If Congressional Democratic heavy hitters are serious about stopping the Iraq mess, they will stop funding it.

Somebody needs to brush up on their history. Truman’s work includes the creation of the UN, appointing Elenor Roosevelt as first US Amb. to the UN, the Nuemberg trials, the Marshall plan (no relation), NATO, US support for the creation of Israel and a bunch of other things I can’t think of. And that does not include his domestic record.
Note how many of Truman’s achievements involve forging international cooperation, something the current punditocracy does not understand.

A friend of mine saw “We Are Marshall” and gave it an enthusiastic review.
wow katymine @55 that’s a good story. I can’t believe 655,000 Iraqi deaths….
What about the pain of the troops & their families? While Bush sleeps (as he says, he has no problem sleeping) between clean sheets, with his secret service detail and his neo-con media posse proecting him from all threats and criticism–the troops continue to risk their lives in the hellish reality that is Iraq. Their families continue to suffer overwhelming, continuous, crushing anxiety–not to mention the stress of handling alone the day to day tasks because their family members are deployed.
Sorry, Bush made the mess, he should be suffering–the really sad thing is that, being the sociopathic narcissist that he is, he’s not capable of suffering because of the torment he’s visited on others.
Do you feel sorry for someone who burned his own house down due to his hubris (ignorance plus stupidity plus arrogance)? I didn’t think so.

Do you mean you disbelieve the accuracy of that number, or that you find it hard to accept the figure because of the awful situation so many deaths signify?
George Bush is in Texas staring at his navel. It’s hard work staring at your navel. Being in Iraq may be hard but staring at your navel is harderer. It’s harderer even than clearing brush. But he’s doing it for you and me because that’s the kind of President he is. And if it takes all of the holidays in Texas to suss that navel out then that’s what he’ll do. And if alcohol helps then so be it for the good of the country. Bush will make the sacrifice, grit his teeth like his ancestors did at the Alamo (if the Alamo had been in Connecticut), and swallow the evil stuff until he can begin to hear what that pesky navel has to say. It brings a tear to my eye.
turtle @ 6
the real problem with this is that he can forgive himself as long as he lives, deluding himself into believing opinion will turn after he’s gone
that’s the problem, nomatter what happens he will tell his brain that history will change judgement to his favor
Do you mean you disbelieve the accuracy of that number, or that you find it hard to accept the figure because of the awful situation so many deaths signify?
I just find it so hard to believe that so many died for absolutely nothing. Nil.
Media neocons support the Iraq invasion. That’s it.
Had Bush resisted PNAC, he would have had the same media fate as Bush I and Clinton.
The media will never go after Bush, even at Elvis sighting numbers. Except, of course, if he fails to escalate or goes soft on Iran.

Oklahoma kiddo @ 64 you are right. The failure to insist on a twin state solution for the mid east was a BIG failure on Truman’s part, as was his failure to insist that France give up their Indo China colonies. For all that I am a huge Truman fan and reject any comparison between him and Smirk.

We see these bad jails in Iraq replete with torture. What about the prisons in the which Israel keeps Palestinians? In both cases, American money subsidizes these ghastly gulags. This monstrous behavior with U.S. support goes well beyond outrageous.

What do you know, Truman did some good stuff. But not good for a Republican, especially by today’s standards. I’ve never disliked Truman, but he certainly isn’t an inspiring historical figure. You can point to a lot of good things Nixon did as well, but sometimes the overall presidency overshadows the positive steps.
As for Bush, I challenge anyone anywhere to point out anything positive he’s done. He stole the presidency with a Supreme Court decision to start his ill-begotten reign. Every single act he’s taken has been bad for this country and bad for the world. He ain’t going to be no Truman.

The true Iraqi casualty count, over the course of our conflict with them, is more like this:
USAF/Army claims of Iraqi military and civilian deaths in Gulf War I
- 250,000
UN estimates of civilian premature deaths 1992-2000, caused by continued destruction and degradation of public health infrastructure since end of Gulf War I – 500,000
Johns Hopkins study on Gulf War II casualties – at last 600,000
Various estimates of Iraqi injuries since beginning of Gulf War I – over 1 million
Iraqi refugees from violence – over 1 million
Total Iraqi casualties since 1991 – almost 3.5 million.
I’m trying to get better information on this, but totally reliable data may not exist.
jayt @ 49
I think that will be his real epitaph. I can’t wish him ill, either, which is something I can’t say about either Nixon or our current pseudo-President, but he helped enable a dreadful crime against this country, which was that it made it OK to deliberately subvert the American political system.

some things never change. Here’s from some news during the Ford-Carter 1976 presdidential campaign, via Juan Cole:
October 30, 1976: As the presidential campaign heats up, the Economist reports that President Ford was constrained to apologize for remarks by the Chairman of his Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. George Brown, to the effect that Israel is a military burden on the United States. Ford called the statement “very ill-advised.”
Jimmy Carter attacked Ford for presiding over a situation in which the US was becoming “the arms merchant of the world.” But he seemed to contradict himself by demanding that more arms be sent to Israel. Ford responded by loosening some restrictions placed by his bureaucrats and sending more weapons to Israel.
Truman did some good stuff. But not good for a Republican
Truman was a Democrat, he was FDR’s VP and succeeded FDR after his death during his 4th term.

What a sorry excuse for a human being, let alone a “political commentator.” The man, aside form being terminally dense, obviously has no morals, no empathy and no soul. I guess that makes him the perfect guy to write about GW. He can relate.
George W Bush is a pitiful excuse for a human being. And we, I’m afraid, are a pitiful excuse for a nation. Any country who RE-ELECTS someone of this stripe gets what they deserve. The really sad part is that when we vote, the entire Earth and every creature that lives upon her suffers. If we cannot eliminate these neo-cons from our government then I’m really afraid that we, humanity, are doomed.
Ed*ard Teller @ 91
Well this I believe was the case. But President Carter I think does well in his newest book. ;)
Perhaps one of the reasons Bush is fixated on his ‘place in history’, is that he has ‘decided’ to do something even more ‘historic’ than the debacle in Iraq. Jorge Hirsch, argues that he has likely ‘decided’ that using nuclear weapons against Iran as a ‘war stopper’ will put an end to the War in Iraq the way the A-Bomb put an end to WWII.

I’m also grateful for the comedic respite. The shocking death – deemed suicide – of the courageous attorney, journalist and radio commentator Paul Sanford on the morning of Christmas eve has me completely unnerved, saddened and not the least bit rather frightened.
For those who missed my comment upthread Paul was a fearless advocate for the Constitution and always carried a copy of U.S. Constitution. In 2004 he appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing unsuccessfully that the words “under God” be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance.
He joined the White House Press Corps in 2006 and was the only member who dared ask (now) former WH press secretary Scott McClellan:
“There has been a lot of speculation concerning the meaning of the underlying statute and grand jury investigation concerning Mr. Rove.
“The question is have the legal counsel to the White House or White House staff reviewed the statue in sufficent specificity to determine whether a violation of that statute would, in effect, constitute treason? Whether the leaking of CIA agent Valerie Plame might be considered an act of treason?”
Firedogs will remember ole Scotty’s stunned response: “Those are matters for those overseeing the investigation.”
The Monterey County Herald has the story in todays edition.
He was a devoted family man and leaves a wife and two youngsters. His body was found Christmas Eve morning on a ventilation grate at a Seaside, CA hotel across Monterey bay from Santa Cruz/Aptos, where he lived with his family and maintained his law office. Scott was opening a Monterey law office in the new year with his longtime friend and associate Shawn Mills.

What is wrong with me? I must have been confusing his party affiliation with Eisenhower’s.
“Anything make you giggle today?”
Yes. This does:
Former oil company owner eyed in spy death
Russian authorities investigate Yukos exec; jailed Italian demands release
Bush’s buddy Putin is behind this whole thing. Including the assassination.
Bizzaro world…Pat Buchanon is hosting Tuckers show today. Fords chief of staff fired him three months into his administration.

Take care and get back as soon as you comfortably can. I’m hoping you’ll share insights into your readings.
My wish today is that the common sense and good midwestern modesty of Gerald Ford’s spirit will allow his family to prevail over the Imperial Republican Guard who’d love nothing more than Reaganpalooza Redux for the next ten days. Please, Widow Ford, keep it simple, keep it quick, step lively back to the comfort and grace of your wonderful family to mourn privately.
The only commentary I am interested in hearing is about the illegality and immorality of the Vietnam War as compared to our current loss of Iraq. I particularly am quite through hearing and seeing pictures of the young Imperialists Cheney and Rumsfeld, cooking up their NeoCon Nightmare as Poppy Bush gelds the CIA. The Ford Presidency wasn’t a healing time — the opportunity to heal was LOST when Ford pardoned Nixon.
We now have no standard for impeachment but extramarital oral sexual relations — leaving us in our current pickle. Thanks, Gerry Ford! And also, thanks for the ERA (not!).
… oh, and:

While we’re at it, we should ask them if they think bait-and-switch is a good trick to play on a former President.
neurophius @ 118
Besides, being in your eighties after having had three different careers should mean you don’t have to put up with small time crap.

Imagine my surprise.

It would be touching if they were not both world leaders.

Not sure what it’s called – but I’m very familiar with it.

I tend to think of ‘reality TV’ as the GOoPers’ version of game shows: they get to feel superior to the contestants, while watching them lose in ways that are as demeaning as possible. (Yes, I have noticed that the GOoPers have a mile-wide mean streak.)

Where’s Gore?
btw, Fresh thread, for everyone.
Ford failed to do what James Baker III failed to do thirty years later. Call the neonuts to the carpet and hold them accountable.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 138
Ummm, that’s not what I meant. Really.
oops.
Blub @ 139
Big news, in a way. I think most of us expected him to run, but he’s improved the field by joining it.
punaise @ 132
Indeed it is a bummer dear Punaise. I just wish someone could explain to me why the MSM is completely ignoring Paul Sanford’s untimely and unseemly death. Sigh!
jayt @ 142
A dirty mind is a terrible thing to waste.
Where’s Gore?
I went to one of the showings of An Inconvenient Truth on the 16th. There was a conference call with Al Gore afterwards. He certainly sounded sincere about not running in 2008 as well as pretty certain he wouldn’t be.
Can’t really blame him, either. Like he’s going to get a fair shot from the media this time around? SUUUUUURE he is.
Al might not be the most spontaneous person on the planet, but he’s no dummy.
Cujo359 @ 133
hear, hear!
I try not to get too worked up about everything. It’s just one tiny planet in a huge Universe. It’s only a matter of life and death, that’s all. So, no big deal, really. Nothing a fifth a’ scotch and a dime bag a’ smack can’t handle.

Regarding the Ignatius “Pity Party” for W:
As the Fighting 110th Congress rams ashore, be sure that the Gang of 500 will be oh-so-sorry for the Liar in Chief and the vicious onslaught that is to come. They will continue to coddle him and jab ludicrous iceballs at Pelosi, Reid and Co for their furious “partisan” attacks.
Only Democrats get accused of being partisan when they are merely pointing out the truth. This will require serious pushback from our side so let’s be ready.
Let’s keep reminding the lame ass DC press corpse that all of the misdeeds and screwups were HIS responsibility. If he wasn’t prepared for that responsibility or its accountability then he should RESIGN!
The Broderellas of the world will be doing some serious pearl-clutching over the next 6 months. I can hear them swoon already-as far as I’m concerned, Ignatius just did.
Oh, and it won’t be long until Ad Nags weighs in with some lame analysis about Dem ineffectiveness regarding investigations. I’m sure it will have nothing to do with administration stonewalling, however.
LET THE HEARINGS BEGIN!!!
what I wrote to David Ignatius today:
First let me say that if Bush is experiencing “painful” moments when he reads about the deaths in Iraq, — GOOD. and IT’S ABOUT TIME.
He ought to be experiencing more than a little pain. He oughtn’t to be walking around with his head held high. He ought to be gray haired, wrinkled brow, and sleepless. He ought to be impeached. He and his “strong” administration lied to every man, woman and child in this hemisphere about war, about empire, about compassion, about recovery. They should all be hanging in the Hague.
“Bush is not a man for introspection. That’s part of his flinty personality — the tight, clipped answers and the forced jocularity of the nicknames he gives to reporters and White House aides. That’s why this version of reality TV is so poignant:”
There is nothing poignant about Bush and his aging whilst on the job. Every president ages on the job. Every one ages in 8 years. The only alternative to aging is death. He’s not dead; he’s the President. And his personality isn’t “flinty”. It is grating and is indicative of a spoiled, narcissistic, bratty, frat boy. He’s been bailed out of every mess he has made. He just isn’t smart enough to know this is another mess. Only this mess is one he’s gotten the entire US into. He doesn’t care about others. He doesn’t care about democracy. He doesn’t give a rat’s tail about the effects his blunders have on anyone. He isn’t missing sleep; he isn’t missing meals; he isn’t losing loved ones to this war. His daughters are partying in one foreign country after another. He goads people who do have children in the military and in Iraq in particular. He does nothing for the common good.
I don’t know what president you are watching. Put your glasses on and watch the one you – not I – elected.”
good one leslie!
