Yesterday, in the midst of putting together The Peanut's brand new big girl bed — it's a lovely antique white bed with a trundle underneath so she'll have space for friends to sleepover in the years to come — she turned around and hugged my neck and said, "Merry Christmas, Momma. This is the best Christmas ever!"
Sure feels that way to me.
We put cookies out for Santa last night and some carrots for the reindeer…and darn it all if they weren't almost all gone, with just one cookie and one carrot left on each plate, with nibbles out of them. Guess delivering presents makes you work up an appetite.
The coffee is on, the cinnamon rolls have been popped in the oven, and The Peanut has opened her presents with the sort of gusto she usually reserves for chasing our dachshund. Which is to say, we are having ourselves a merry little morning — and I sure hope that you are having one as well.
Here's the toy of choice from this morning's offering from Santa — the Fisher-Price Little People Time To Learn Preschool. Let me tell you, the slide works for every possible toy and action figure — and it's great for matchbox cars, too. Woo hoo!

Merry XMAS
FWIW, just being part of someone elses life is the best gift I can get.
Thank you FDL!
Christy,
My daughter is now 24, and still opens those presents with the same gusto.
Cherish these awesome moments, and let your kid be a kid to you for a long time. Peanuts joy is projected in your work. And it is fine work you do!
a pre-coffee, pre-gifts, merry christmas to all.
back in a bit.
Merry Christmas, all. And peace on earth.
Merry Christmas everyone! There’s a big pot of tea here, for those who like it.
Bob Herbert and Paul Krugman in the NYT today, Herbert revisiting the Ninth Ward and talking with Spike Lee, and Krugman suggesting we have something to learn from Britain about dealing with poverty. I surely hope some of our folks in the new Congress read him.

Midnight Mass was wonderful last night and, if I do say so myself as a member, the choir did well. My wish is that we all have a peaceful and love-filled 12 Days of Christmas. (Don’t know about presents yet, we do our gifts on Epiphany. What with rehearsals and such we’re too tired to give them the thankful attention they deserve. I’m hoping for Heifer International chicks…)
Merry Xmas! Time to get in the car and drive.
Merry Christmas, gang — cinnamon rolls are just about ready to pop out of the oven here. Nothing like the smell of caramelized sugar and toasted pecans and pastry…nummy. Hope everyone is having as much fun as we are here this morning. :)
Merry Christmas!
Christy: We put cookies out for Santa last night and some carrots for the reindeer…and darn it all if they weren’t almost all gone, with just one cookie and one carrot left on each plate, with nibbles out of them.
Christmas is magical when you have young children. My daughter looked at the empty plate with wonder when Santa had fed all the carrots to his reindeer. When she was little I asked her how Santa can deliver the presents to all the children of the world in one night and she answered very matter-of-factly: “It’s magic.”
oddball: Christy,
My daughter is now 24, and still opens those presents with the same gusto.
My daughter is 18 and I gave her a stuffed My Little Pony, sort of as a gag gift, and it was one of her favorite presents!
Best of times to you all.
As expected, I got my USB Missile Launcher. One click of a mouse and foam projectiles hurtle toward intended annoying co-workers.
I also got the Dilbert calendar to help in identifying said targets.
45 years old, and I still want weaponry…
YAY!

So there was a Pony after all!
Merry Christmas Redd and all. Coffee’s ready to bring to my sweetie pie in bed. Have a great day wherever you are and whatever you do. Peace
Mine daughter is 14 and, though I can’t believe it, is still asleep this morning at 8:20. Something tells me the unwrapping orgy will begin soon. Must finish post! Merry Christmas to all the FDLers, Christy and Jane, thanks for making this Iowa boy feel a part of something bigger and better every day. Blueberry muffins are in the oven, decaf coffee is dripping. Time to go! The dead! They rise and walk! Time to open presents! Wheeeeeee!!!!!!
Decaf coffee? What a strange tradition you have in Iowa
I am by my self this christmas day.
NoNoNo do not feel sorry for me, There are millions who need your sympathy and carring more than me.
My family and a menagary of extentions celebrate on various days at various locations in various ways. My son graduated from U.S. Navy basic training last Friday and is on leave untill the third. My daughter is at her inlaws today.
I hope everyone has a great day.
I also love the feeling of community at this site. Thank you Christy and Jane.
Merry Christmas!
Three lovely children are still sleeping while egrSanta makes a couple of last minute additions.
Love and cookies for the whole world!
Merry Christmas Christy and Peanut and to all on the Lake. Thank you, Ladies, TRex and Pach — and Peanut for sharing your mom.
Coffee (there’s lots, help yourself) and big Christmas hugs all around. Now to go finish that Christmas clavichord for del’y this aft — nothing like a drop-dead deadline to give your life meaning! Ho ho ho!
Merry Christmas Everyone!!! It’s 6:15 here in SoCal and my partner is still snoozing away, and will be for hours yet. Butch, the white standard poodle, Sophie, the little white Maltese, and I are celebrating on our own so far with dried liver snacks and snuggles. Pooka, the black kitty, got some stinky food and much petting and then wandered off to her own private meditations. One of the nice things about being a pagan is you get to celebrate all holidays!
I hope everyone is having a wonderful morning!
PS: What color is Peanut’s bedspread? (I’m a home decorating junky.)
Merry Christmas FDLers. I’d like to give my first toast of the day to all of you:
If I were given a ticket to heaven but you didn’t get one, too. I’d tear mine to pieces and go to hell with you!
I know, I know, with the last six years it seems we’re already there but we now have the house and the senate and for me that gives the gift of hope – so next year let’s go kick some executive butt!
My lady and the dachshunds are still snuggled in. The weather is dreary here, but the house is warm, the coffee is fine, and there’s still no place like home.
A post from a friend sent me to my bookshelf first thing this morning for what seems to be my accidental Christmas tradition, a rereading (aloud, no less,) of my favorite piece of writing on a subject near and dear to us all. Try it.
On Love
Enjoy, and a very happy day on you all.
Thunder and Lightening (Donder und Blitzen?) here in S. Florida today. Almost like a blizzardy ol’ time “up-north” Xmas. Folx still sleepin’, ‘cept me on my 2nd pot of cawfie.
FDL still the greatest. Hope everybody has a good one today.
Merry Christmas everyone!
My parents went to church and my partner and I are about to have breakfast and coffee. Then, when the folks get back, we’ll open presents.
Heh.
You just don’t rush down the stairs the same way at my age.
I got my son a Moon in My Room light from the Discovery Channel Store,I wish I had got one for me. It’s neat-o. A 3D moon with a remote control that lets it run through all the moon phases automatically or manually. We’ve already hung it on a choice spot in his room. I think it might be the fave so far. He’s got a remote control pickup truck and a remote UFO which will be used,I’m sure,to freak out the cats any minute now.
I got a brand new Kitchen Aid mixer, one of the big restaurant kitchen style ones, and some new kitchen knives.I have had the same knife set for almost 20 yrs, lol,it came from the Dollar Store,so it was time. I also got a stainless steel food mill and a set of canning jars, the canner and the rack. I’m all set to can next fall.YAY! Bread and Butter pickles, tomato sauce, salsa,I can’t wait.
I got the hubby an XBox 360 and a couple of games.
Not a bad haul for a bunch of heathens, lol.
Pumpkin pie is in the oven here, one of the best smells to come out of any kitchen I think.
I miss those Little People toys now that my kids are grown up. We had the barn, both kids played with it(there’s ten years difference between them)til it literally fell to pieces. I loved the chickens, they had square holes in the bottoms of them so they could roost on the little fence pieces that you set up around the barn. And the “moo!”when you opened the barn door. My son used to laugh hysterically every time.
Happy Holidays,Merry Christmas and what have you to all. I guess I should go and make dinner things, ham, baby potatoes in butter and parsley, rolls, mac and cheese(my son won’t eat potatoes),green bean cassarole, and scalloped corn. It’s just the three of us today since my newest grandbaby is too little to travel still. I got the call from my grandson this morning(he’s 3 1/2)”Oooh,MaMaw,you’re WAY better than Santa Claus,I wuv you and fank you for da presents”. Man,I’m better than Santa? That’s pretty cool.
Merry Christmas Firedogs! We made Midnight Mass, barely, and enjoyed the music. we tortured the kids and made them wait until we grabbed one last Z, seeing as we didn’t get to bed until 2. Pokemon for Nintendo DS and an iPod were the big hits. Coffee and cinnamon rolls are on their way. And the dogs love their bones!
Peace and prosperity to all you guys, and thanks for letting me be a part of your awesome community!
Merry Everything to all. And thank you FDL contributors for being the voice of sanity in these trying times.
Alas, Santa did not bring me that set of FDL Action Figures this year. Maybe next year.
I got the same as usual…..zip. But xmas is for fertile people with families. I hope everybody else has a good one.
My daughter Veronique is 15 (turns 16 in 3 days). I gave her a cool luggage set for her first overseas trip (no parents) to Paris next June. She really loves it and it’s funky retro styling. I filled one on the pockets with French francs. My techno son Patrick (14) got a Wii plus accessories. It. Is. Cool. I got some fancy towels and the Maurice Richard ‘The Rocket’ DVD.
It is above freezing in Gatineau today, very mild, no snow. I put out some bird seeds on the covered deck table and am enjoying the sight of a dozen sparrows filling their little bird bellies.
Joyeux Noel FDLers.
Balrog, I neglected to elf myself the other night. So here it is…
G’Morning and Merry Christmas…
It is raining here in Oregon (what else is new?) and one parent is up and hear the other. Miss Dog got me up to do her morning trip outside. She misses her doggie door that she has at home and so do I.
Need to run out into my truck and get my coffee maker….. need to make real coffee!
The little people toys were a hit for my kids too but my farm kids criticized the moo sound on the barn, it did not sound like what a real cow sounds like.
Merry Christmas to all.
Mr. Marks and the cats still snoozing. This afternoon we’ll catch a train to go have dinner with the in-laws. Sister-in-law is serving up both ham AND turkey. Yum!
Now, I’ve got to get started on my Merry Christmas phone calls to friends and family.
I hope you all have a glorious day.
Season’s best to all the firepups! Picture the Cologne Cathedral all lit, visible from nearly 50 km last nite. Heiligend Abend, the nite for xmas is a family drinking day in Germany. I think it stems from the old Katholic tradition of going to church in the morning, then going across the street to a Kneipe, and drinking until your lovely family passes out.
Thousand year old tradition, called Fruh Shoppen, which means early drunk. the long-legged girl i met last nite half my age helped me finish the bottle of Furst von Metternich (Sekt, the German champagne) for breakfast and drove off to Cologne to see her boyfriend play tonite.
Meanwhile, my beloved son is more than five thousand miles away, in some town called Los Angeles, spinning his house grooves. We’ll both be paying tribute to the godfather of soul.
And i say Vielen Dank to the soul of FireDogLake. Let’s not forget we’re running a race with no finish line, as someone here posted recently.
File this under Holiday Accidents.
Knowing that I had to work today, I bought my cats a greasy (free range)cooked chicken for xmas. I set it on a big platter beside my bed because that is the kitty hang out spot these days.
At 4:45 when I hopped out of bed full speed, I stuck my foot into the chicken carcass and took off sliding across the hardwood floor and landing in an awkward semi spread eagle.
Lesson here is: Don’t wear chicken on your feet.

LOL — great memory.
As a single w/relatives at assorted distances, thanks to all the FDL family for letting me share your Christmas joys, albeit vicariously. May each of you be blesssed with many more years of fun and the wonderful variety of friends found at the Lake.
Good Morning, All! Merry Christmas! Santa was very good to me – got a Le Crueset enameled soup pot… in cherry red and it is so beautiful! Now, I gotta start making some stews and soups…
I santa’d myself with a recumbent trike – looks like a little go cart – and took a midnight ride last night to look at Christmas lights. A little cold, but a very pretty ride…
time for coffee…
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Merry Christmas to all, and Happy Holidays to those of you that don’t observe Christmas, per se.
Tinroof, I love Kahlil Gibran. I even have the book and the record. I think my favorite is “On Children” for all of you, especially Christy, who have children.
We got a flock of Heifer International chicks and are so very pleased with them!
We had a lovely Christmas dinner with friends last night. One family’s lovely Nana was wont to break into song at the drop of the hat, so we just joined her and sang off and on all evening. National anthems of NZ (in Maori and English), Australia, and England. The state song of Kansas (Home on the Range). Waltzing Matilda. Ode to Joy. Ding Dong Merrily on High. Great fun, with paper Christmas crowns. Didn’t even take any alcohol for some of them.

Even this Briuns fan who watched his little brother Henri and the tall rookie goalie beat Bobby, Phil and ‘The Chief’ is jealous.
Les Habitants!
(Sad about Ms. Gainey.)
Merry Christmas FDL’ers. Hubby is still snoozing after a late night Midnight Mass and Wassail Party. The rum balls were a big hit.
Will spend the day with close friends and their 4 kids. A tradition for us.
CHS – your commitment is unbelievable, even on Christmas Day. Truth and justice never takes a vacation I guess. Thanks.

Merry Christmas All
so, I was hoping this morning that I would turn on the TV and peace would have broken out all over the world…
well, I can dream, can’t I?
I’ve always wondered why there are two kinds of children: The ones who can’t wait to get away and differentiate themselves from their parents, and those who try to be just like mom & dad. It has nothing to do with love–I adore my parents, now 87 and 81, but couldn’t wait to do my thing. My kid brother stayed home until he was 40. And my two children split the same way. My peanut daughter (4′11″ and 24 years old) has spent the past ten years trying to be different, and my 20-year-old son is comfortable around the old hearth.
But they’re both here for Christmas this year. No Fisher-Price toys anymore, but last year’s night-flight (lit up in red!) frisbees showed that toys are still acceptable. Come to think of it, 53-year-olds like toys, too.
Merry Christmas to all. And to the esteemed proprietors of FDL, congratulations on a fabulous year. In a very real way, your success was our success–it’s our Congress now.
Merry Christmas Redd, Peanut, Jane, Pach, scarecrow, TRex, Peterr and all the fabulous conversationalists who live at the Lake. Off to try to fly to Grandma’s – again – hope it takes this time.
This is a very strange Christmas. Woke up in a hotel room, no tree, presents can’t be wrapped or TSA will pout. Sigh. At least we’re all together and alive, well and happy.
RIP, James Brown.
Daddybrain says hi, too.
Good morning and Merry Christmas to all,
We had our family Christmas last night and Dad got a new set of golf clubs. The kids said my old set belonged with the Flintstones.
Today is an anniversary of sorts, I posted a comment for the first time on Christmas day last year after reading the comments for about five months.
This community has been very good for me and my family, it has helped me vent, keeping my sanity in very trying times. When I go to the computer to read the news, my wife has been very understanding and for that I am very grateful. Many times she will come into the room, sit down and read a book while I share many of the wonderful comments with her.
Thank you Christy, Jane, Pach, and all the family here at FDL.

My bet is on the minimum wage for their first effort, since W has all but signed on to it already. Unless, of course, he makes it subject to Congressional agreement to his “surge” as a condition. I’m hoping that they tackle fixing their “donut hole” in the prescription drug medicaid bill, since I just fell into it. I’m going without my best drug, Advair (not to mention Spiriva and Actonel), until after the New Year due to that donut hole, and I’ve only been on Medicaid since May. (Luckily, I already had a reserve of Albuterol and Lipitor to draw on till after the first. And I can get samples of Spiriva from my Doctor.) It was quite a shock when I went to pick up my prescriptions in mid-December, expecting them to cost $156 (which I already can’t afford, really) and they said $340.22. I said that can’t be right because my co-pay is $39 for each of four prescriptions, and that’s when I found out what the donut hole was. Sounds to me like if they don’t fix it by June, I’m screwed!
I got 6 phone calls from my youngest sister and her husband on Dec 24. She is in manic phase (bipolar), he can’t take it, and he left and didn’t go home for Christmas. She “celebrated” with their college sons who are going back to their apt at school right after lunch, altho school doesn’t start until Jan 8. So sad that her own family can’t bear to be around her. We’ve invited her to stay with us for a few days. (Wish us luck.)
On a happier note, I made that cinnamon “bundt cake” recipe for breakfast, and it is fabulous. The house smells wonderful. Thanks!!
I’m making pumpkin pecan pancakes for breakfast. I’m getting hungry just thinking about them!
Merry Christmas to everyone here at FDL.
I got a great gift, my daughter came home this morning. All of us are healthy. So all in all, this is a good christmas day.
Santa was berry berry good to me. A Democratic majority is just what I wanted (and warm, red acrylic socks, too!)
MERRY CHRISTMAS ONE AND ALL!!
hope everyone received all they wanted today and im glad to be able to read my favorite blog! kiss peanut for me redd – i have a 3yo granddaughter to enjoy my xmas with and its wonderful!
C. C. in NC @ 48
C.C. you’ve given a true gift of Christmas–Caring. Congrats. I hope the next few days are bearable.
Merry Christmas to All. My cats had a great time with their “stash”!
And, a special Ho Ho Ho to Peanut! It is the best of times…
I had a great morning. The dogs usually get their presents last, but they decided they couldn’t wait to tear open some packages and helped me unwrap my slippers and fuzzy socks. I’m not sure if they will let me reclaim them. The family Christmas party went well yesterday and my dearest friend is bringing over her little girls (with gift wrapped bones for my dogs) so we still have the joy of a few presents to hand out. It’s been a good holiday.
Merry Christmas to all at FDL!
My kids freak out at the “evidence” that Santa actually came… the cookie crumbs, gnawed carrots etc… But a friend of mine turned me on to another piece of great evidence.
Put some baking soda on a cookie sheet and dampen up the sole of a “waffle-stomper” type hiking boot, leave some footprints around the chimney and tree (obviously works best on dark colored flooring). My kids faces as they stare – wide eyed and stunned is priceless!
Try it next year if you haven’t already heard about this one…
Gods, that bed is identical to the one we got our daughter when she was that age, color and all!
