I was trying to find a good YouTube of my favorite Christmas carol, "O Holy Night," and unfortunately this was what I came up with.
Also for your Christmas day entertainment — clips from the Mr. Hankey episode in Japanese.
Enjoy.

And a ho de hi.
Esten!
Would have been sweet to have had a page on hand to “remind” Planet Hastert of the words to the anthem.
well … now I really need some eggnog!
good cheer Jane!
Wishing Peace to everyone!
Thanks Jane for all you’ve done for FDL and our nation. I know 2007 is going to be even better.
Merry Christmas, firepups. I’ve been busy this last six weeks with a Thanksgiving visit with my son, wind and snow storms, work overtime and holiday prep. I do try to read the wonderful posts, but have had to skip the comments. I’m finally catching up some today. What an amazing talent pool.
I also took the opportunity today to write my second ever letter to the prez. I wrote two years ago under the influence of shock when my son enlisted just before Christmas. Today the influence of shock continues as I have my first Christmas without him and the additional shadow of his imminent deployment to Iraq (yes, 1/6/07).
Okay enough of that. Again, thank you for being here. Keep up the good work.
My daughter sang “O Holy Night” at the Christmas Eve service– it was beautiful. That’s a prefect carol for showcasing a soprano.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment today PNWster! Let us know how your son makes out …
Waving Hi Jane from down the road in Florence!
Thank you for providing entertainment when the folks conk off for their naps. What a break from my hectic schedule of late.
My day does not start unless I peak at FDL and ends with Late Night and TRex (Pach too). Thanks for being there, thanks for the time, energy and place with such a quality reputation that I can site in when calling into my Air America station!
MRiesz Fischer @ 8
My fav early memory is during candlelight service and a soprano singing “O Holy Night.” I still get chills at the line “Fall on your knees!” Good memories.
This was what I came up with…
There’s something really perverse about a cartoon character singing about being a Jew on Christmas in Japanese.
Happy War on Christmas, all.
Thank you Jane for offering your lakesite, where opinions are exchanged and actions are planned for a better tomorrow. It takes every bit of effort to rescue America from the gutter it is being pushed into by our government.
Eli @ 12
Thanks, Eli. But I prefer that one in the original Latin.
Could this South Park vid be a preview of Jane’s plan to control TRex’s post-Festivus online shopping??
.
.
Merry Post-Solstice, all!
Many thanks to the shaman who first burned a tree on the tallest mountain, convincing fellow villagers that the subsequently lengthening winter days were due to the shaman’s burning tree intervention.
Odds are it was a lady shaman, waddya wanna bet?

Can we please get back to a woman-powered world — since women know life and care about life? We men have had a (not-so) good run at being in charge — let’s see if the lasses can fix the cock-up we’ve made of the world. Who’s in with me for househusbandry and Mister-Momming our way to peace, justice, and a fair shake for all the goddess’s Earthlings? Or perhaps we could evolve, quickly, to parthogenesis, with a few boylads kept around for their fun-in-the-sack and decorating skills?
just a thought…
.
.
Love to all, even the Cheney Fetus, and best wishes for a New Year fraught with hope for all Earthlings!
…oh, and:
Troops
Home
NOW
Hey Jane and katymine! I am just down the road from youse guys – in Eureka. Happy holidays!
TeddySanFran @ 16
I saw a science fiction show about that– I think it was the Outer Limits (the new series, not the original). Only without the boylads.
A man was found by a future society of all women. He had it good for awhile, but they soon started fighting and killing each other.
Anyway, I’d be willing to give it a try if I get to be one of the “few boylads kept around”!
I used to joke with a friend that one day we will find an “antidoe for testosterone” and be able to sprinkle it in the food. It could be cut back when needed for fun as TSF suggests. :o)
Hello all! Especially hello Jane, who first got me hooked on YouTube. I just decided to take a pass on Christmas this year, and celebrate it as a day when I can totally relax. It really has been glorious.
Now, the YouTube thing… last semester (which finished 2 days ago with the handing in of grades) I showed a lot of YouTubes as intros to lectures. I just felt so “cool”, especially when half the TAs hadn’t even heard of it.
Last semester’s class was about Neurobiology, and I had to do a bunch of lectures on movement and reflexes.
So, here are a couple of faves among those I showed- and these really are great!
Amazing horse race, on Japanese (oops, Chinese) TV:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY801mwCqjg&NR
And, of course my all time fave, which I have only linked about 25 times on FDL: November gets on the treadmill- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peLD2vlxRM0
And, Duran Duran “The Reflex” (yeah, I made it relevant) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RZRrLcXGq0
The Duran Duran thing has special memories for me- (or not?)- I was flying back to the UK from LA, and, as it turned out, Duran Duran was in first class, just returning from a US tour. However, their road manager was in coach, seated almost next to me. Well, he started buying drinks for all… and…. what with all those gin and tonics, it was the most painless transatlantic flight ever.
So, thanks Jane and FDL for everything. Right now I’ll say thanks for the YouTube fix. I just can’t tell you how cool I felt, saying to those twenty-somethings “oh, you don’t know about YouTube?…. Those are the kind of presents I REALLY like. xxoo
Riesz Fischer @ 18
I think I would *still* be the one that women just think of as a friend…
Merry Christmas to all. PNWester, my thoughts will be with you and your son. January 6 is the Feast of the Epiphany – the day that the three wise men found the baby Jesus. I hope that wise men and women will prevail in the coming year.
Eli @
21
Not sure how the gals would make that decision; my criteria would be entirely skill-based. Given the skills I’d prioritize, I’d end up with Ron Jeremy, the South Park boiz, and Christopher Lowell. Just my luck….
PNWster — thoughts from here to you and yours today, also on 1/6.
Thank you all. I deal with denial best, so don’t expect too much conversation. Wouldn’t you know it, a perfect Martini day (no travel plans) and I’m lacking Vermouth (online recipe search). Just what is Vermouth anyways and where is Twisted Martini? I figured gin and olives sufficient. What can I substitute on a day when stores are not open?
TSF -
I swear I’ve been dying to use this since I even heard the VP’s had a daughter with that name and this band (I haven’t seen it used anywhere, so I hope a IP claim can stand up. I’ve never even seen pusaise use it.) And, it has the advantage of being relevant today and under the ‘conditions’ -
“Jesus and the Mary Cheney“.
[prepares for onslaught]
[damn. snarking while a child is sent off to uncertain ends.]
I too send best wishes to you and yours PNWster.
goddess speed.
“Jesus and the Mary Cheney“.
or last year in “Texas we Saw Cheney Massacre”
Hark! The herald fundies sing,
‘Glory to our Texas King;
War on earth and no-mercy missions ,
God please let us use some fission.’
Bitter, all ye nations rise,
as we send death from skies;
With th’demonic host proclaim,
Even now we’d vote bush again!’
Hark! The herald corporate whores sing,
‘Glory to the Boy King!’
Bush, by highest boards adored,
Bush the everlasting Lord;
Late in time behold him tax cut,
no more money to welfare sluts.
Veiled in cash the no-bid contracts see,
Hail th’incarnate Deity!
Pleased as Hitchens with a gallon of gin;
We’ll be contributing to Him!
Hark! The herald morons sing, etc.
The ‘Studio 60′ Christmas episode had a subplot that related to various LA house musicians (including one from the Studio 60 band) calling in sick and bringing in a sub so as to get an under the radar paycheck and union card for a number of NO musicians who were sleeping on couches in LA.
Ultimately the producer (Bradley Whitford’s character) realizes they’re doing this, and rather than push back at the subterfuge, rounds up a bunch of them to put on a jazz performance of O Holy Night during the Studio 60 broadcast, backed by a montage of NO, both rebirth and heartbreaking wreckage.
The piece was so good that I watched the entire episode again when they rebroadcast it a few weeks later just to see it.
Typically of a ‘network’ site, the video is in some format I can’t run (they made YouTube take it down), but they have made the audio as a free download from the front page.

It’s really wonderful, even without the video montage, check it out.

Ahhh… alas… but I am singing along.

Santa vs jesus, first SOuth Park episode
PNWster @ 25
As my Gramps always said {quoting someone more witty than he, I’m sure): “Why ruin decent gin with vermouth?”
Olives, if you must.
We’re having a magnificent bottle of blanc de noirs from the new neighborhood food palace, but I’ve made a donation to Project Open Hand to assuage the guilt.
I’m having a nice Jim Beam on ice – in a clean “Tostitos’ Salsa con Queso” jar, since the other glasses in the house are all from fast food outlets, and liquor is good only in glass.. .
Did you guys hear that Urban Pirate proposed last night and she said yes?
A toast to Urban and the future Mrs. Pirate!!
I am just back from our neighborhood Christmas dinner. All the kids have grown up, I don’t remember giving them permission…
Great to be with friends who love me even in the midst of my December depression. I am more “out” than ever this year and they are right there with me, asking how I am and understanding my need to quickly retreat to a place that’s quiet.
A very Merry Christmas to all the Firedogs around the world.
A special shout out to those of us on the left coast, from Otter Rock to Florence and on down to Eureka.
Merry Christmas Valley Girl.
You too Teddy, Katymine ,Punaise.( I know you are lurking).Eureka springs, How are y’all?.
Blank Kludge. One and all.
PNWster, A special howdy and prayers.
Jane, Christy, Pach, Trex, Suin and so many more.
Thank you.
My best to you.
Phil.
Oh, and of course the ever sweet Egregious.
Merry Christmas.
And you too Jaqurat.
No edit feature, sorry Jacqrat. *g*
Bustednuckles!!! huge hugs!!!
Back at ya VG.
On my Brothers ‘puter and have to go, but wanted to wish everyone the best.
PNWster @

It would be nice if Laura had some of that to sprinkle on Dumbya’s food whenever he started saying stoopid stuff like “I say bring ‘em on.”
Bustednuckles @ 37
:)
Maybe the only sweet things here are the sugar cookies, but thanks anyway. Sweet love from neighbor friends and blog friends. It really helps. This might be the best December I’ve had in 20 years. Am feeling brave enough to be honest about how I’m doing, even if it sounds strange to others. Hope to set a good example, heck, hope to get by. Maybe in another generation or so they’ll have the meds figured out. In the meantime many thanks for words of encouragement and love MUCH NEEDED.
—————–egregious
Riesz Fischer @ 41
Thorazine would probably work better, in his case. But, Laura’s probably hogging it all. So goes history…. :)
omg you are right montag she’s stealing his meds, thus ww3.
thanks, big pharma!
Upstairs Jane says “Home Alone” is her fav xmas movie.
Bustednuckles.. happy happy Christmas back, Hi VG glad to see ya around or maybe I am glad that I can have the time to be at the lake.
Just minutes from our Christmas feast with Turkey breast roast, real baked potatoes(not nuked) and green beans. My 85 & 83 yr old parents are doing the cooking. Miss dog is trying real hard to be ready for any fallen treats.
Really looking forward to Urban Pirate Wedding updates and who knows… someday the pitter patter of little Pirates??
Teddy, thanks for being a great bud, egregious for hanging in there and working at it everyday, I am so glad to see the progress. This is why FDL is the BEST, those who post here and those who hang out there.
btw…. think my house misses me, how the heat is out. Yee gads, the last trip I took to Alaska, the water heater went out!
You’re looking for “O Holy Night”, you want this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=LXT83g7wsOs
Trombomne Shorty leading a New Orleans jazz ensemble playing “O Holy Night” on “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”; the MP3 is on the NBC website.
One of the best O Holy Night’s has to be Paul Schaffer imitating Cher.
I keep the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s version of “Oh Holy Night” on my computer and play it every Christmas. It’s amazing.
But TVland was playing older sitcoms’ Christmas shows yesterday and Benson sang “Oh Holy Night” really nicely. Then I remembered that the actor was once the Phantom of the Opera and it all made sense.
