Yaz? Yaz?? The band was Yazoo, and no amount of US legalese is going to change that. There was no Yaz, there was no English Beat and no London Suede. Please recalibrate your heads accordingly.

(and Dave Stewart’s best work was in Vegas with Terry Hall)

I never did understand the big deal over this song, or the band, or Annie Lennox.

Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to be used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused

Trite lyrics. Nice but not outstanding music.

Did they ever have a second hit? Can’t remember one.

Yup, I reacted the same way to “Sweet Dreams” — an almost orgasmic song, as sung by Annie.

And, in case no one else has posted the original video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPSD_aEwBqU

Years ago, and around that same time when the Eurhymics were still fairly new on the scene, I had just gotten a job at an ad agency, and I was in a new city and in my first relationship with another woman. I had spent the last 18 months finding my true sexuality, and becoming acquainted with radical lesbian politics and spirituality (and it was still radical then, certainly in Florida where I lived).

Annie appeared on some award show in full drag. Then next day in the company lunch room, a male staff member wondered out loud who that guy was singing, obviously referring to the same performance I had watched the night before and delighted in the sexual twist on prime time tv. I gave him a quick look, not sure if he was joking or serious, but tried not to embarrass him and didn’t say a thing. Nonetheless, he blushed and looked away.

The next day I got canned, told that I just didn’t fit in there (which was painfully true). So I’ve always thanked Annie for saving me from a career in advertising.

Trex @ 83:

If “I Can’t Make You Love Me” gets you, check out Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “What You Didn’t Say.” Another one that will make you cry.

So look at me one last time,
With eyes that still know how to shine.
Hold me like you won’t let go,
But you let go anyway …

de-lurking and late to the party.

There was an AIDS benefit tv special many years ago featuring all Cole Porter songs sung by the likes of k.d.lang, U2, Neville Bros, Lisa Stansfield, Tom Waits, David Byrne, and Annie. Annie’s version of “Everytime We Say Goodbye” haunts me to this day.
The special & CD are titled “Red, Hot, and Blue” and many of the song videos were cut from the American version, the network said, for time considerations. Personally, I think some of the videos were too much for primetime America.

Happy Holidays to all.
back to lurking.

A big YES to Annie Lennox,[and happy birthday]. We femmes who don’t want to wobble around in three inch heels and “girlie” type clothes look for gals like Annie to pave the way with her courage to do just as she likes.
Another plus has been her singing range. I love to sing along! Yep, another alto.

the eurhythmics were great. but my all time favorite of annie’s (so far) is her cover of paul simon’s “you calmed me down” with paul doing back-up. it’s on the “central park” double CD.
