Sorry I wasn't home to celebrate Festivus with everyone yesterday evening, but I was at a family food and Christmas fest that went a bit longer than expected. But frankly, who can get enough? The fact that a comedy bit from a Seinfeld show (episode #166) from 1997 could become some sort of celebrated holiday cracks me up.
The fact that it became a Ben and Jerry's flavor? Sweeeeeet.
For those who may be uninitiated in the ways of Festivus, here's a bit of background:
On Episode 166 of "Seinfeld," which originally aired Dec. 18, 1997, during the series' final season, George Costanza grudgingly brings Kramer and his boss, Kruger, over to his parents' home to celebrate Festivus, a celebration supposedly invented by George's eccentric, maniacal father, Frank. Replacing the Christmas tree is a steel pole that requires no decorating — "I find tinsel distracting," Frank Costanza says. After the airing of grievances, Festivus can't officially end until the feats of strength. In this instance, George must pin his father in a wrestling match (he never succeeds). In reality, Festivus began in 1966 — or so claims Tim O'Keefe, the "Seinfeld" writer who wrote Festivus into the show. He says his father introduced the celebration to his family, in all sincerity, by "singing in German about a black pig, bitching about people who didn't like them into a barely functional tape recorder and displaying obscene, hand-scrawled signs of a political nature." O'Keefe unfolds all this and more in his book "The Real Festivus." Jerry Stiller, who played Frank Costanza on "Seinfeld," wrote the forward to "Festivus: The Holiday for the Rest of Us," a chronicle of actual Festivus celebrations by Allen Salkin.
And you can read even more about Festivus celebrations here.
But wait, it gets better. There is now a company that makes Festivus poles for the non-holiday celebration. In case you missed the original Seinfeld episode, here are the highlights via some good splicer on YouTube. Now, if you will excuse me, I have some grievances to air...sure, it's a day late, but that just makes for better grievances, doesn't it? (And for the first Festivus miracle, isn't that Jack Black as the creepy, hairy guy lurking behind Elaine? Ahhhh, yes, memories...)
Just for kicks, I thought everyone might like to discuss who deserves the most airing of national grievances this year. If you could pick, who would be getting the biggest lump of coal in their stocking? Say it with me: "Serenity, now..."

But I don’t mean he should get a lump of coal in his stocking! Quite the opposite.
Serenity Now. Cheney deserves a paper-shredding truck full of coal.
Has anyone read Deborah Howell this morning?
UGH!
Essentially she defends a weaker WaPo as being “good” by giving readers less information.
That’s your WaPo “Readers Representative” talking.

Good Morning Christy,
Merry Christmas!!!
Hope the Peanut is feeling good and you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
Thank you for all you do for us.
Merry Christmas, Rosie O’Donnell.
Rosie Beats Trump, By Numbers
Now that Rosie O’Donnell and Donald Trump are in a feud and war of words, it’s time to look at what they really do in the public forum.
Trump called Rosie “an animal” has hurled other epithets at her in the last day since O’Donnell baited him on “The View.” Trump’s sympathy level has since fallen.
But between these two prominent New Yorkers, I wondered: now that it’s Christmas time, who’s more charitable? Donald the self-proclaimed billionaire, or Rosie the talk show host and comic?
The answer: Rosie, as it turns out. Her For All the Kids Foundation gave away $1.9 million in 2004-2005 to children’s charities all over the United States. This is pretty remarkable, and something I didn’t know about it until I looked it up. The foundation benefits groups that help at risk kids, and even put a big chunk of change toward rebuilding a Head Start center in New York.

I remember when my daughter got her first bed. It was a big step, but I didn’t have any regrets at that point. I remember feeling a little sad when she started kindergarten. And when she started middle school (sixth grade, here in Michigan) I was like, wait a minute– this is going a little too fast!
Festivus ice cream? I try NOT to look at the Ben & Jerry’s section — but, hey, it’s the holidays…got to check that out!
Oklahoma Kiddo,

A cardboard wrapping-paper tube has been approved as an alternative this year.
It can also be used to freak out the animals (howl into it) and to hit relatives for inappropriate grievance airing.

Rosie kicked his ass. I saw the clips of both of them and she totally got the best of him.
Joe Scarborough only showed some clips of Trump and made it look like he got the best of her. That’s Scarborough for you. But anyone who saw all the clips knows Rosie mopped the floor with him.

Yes, I’m being my own egregious self today.
Got holiday depression? Come on over and rant at my humble blog. It’s open house. Bipolar people especially welcome.
The Vice-President for the biggest lump of coal; but I wouldn’t want to go up against Deadeye Dick in the “feats” portion of the evening’s activities…
Hi, egregious - read your blog notes. I’m just a garden-variety depressive - no mania, so I never have a phase where I can get things done . I do try to get out at lunchtime at work (which is very depressing) for sunlightk, and it does help.
More sunlight, less SAD is one reason I stay here in South Texas.
Looking at the previous thread’s weather comments, we seem to have everyone else’s gray skies and freezing rain today and yesterday. But, being a native more-or-less northerner, it feels more like Christmas to me.

Good thing you live in a coal mining state!
Riesz Fischer @ 12
Well it also helps that she was right. As all of us New Yorkers know, Trump WAS bailed out by Daddy TWICE when he was on the precipice of bankruptcy; the first time with an outright gift and the second with his timely demise.
But as to the lump of coal, well my goodness there are just so many to choose from, but I think I have a few to give based on a theme if you’ll indulge me…
First a HUGE lump to none other than Holy Joe Lieberman, for baltently lying to his constituents about how he wants to bring the troops home as soon as possible and about how he’s really a Democrat and then, 6 weeks after being elected, going on a trip to Iraq with a Rethug delegation and declaring that MORE troops are needed. Extra lump for still trying to hold himself out as a moral authority while lying thru his teeth, however…
Another smaller lump to…THE VOTERS OF CONNECTICUT who, knowing the type of guy he is, and if not, being informed by us at every turn what to expect, voted him in anyway. As Tweety said, those who were against the war and voted for Holy Joe have forfeited their right to bitch about anyting he does regarding it now. And while we’re at it,
Another lump of coal to the MSM who CONTINUE to use his statements as evidence of Democratic disarray. Earth to pundits, HE’S NOT A DEM!!!! He’s an independent that has chosen to cacus with the Dems, but his opinions shoud not be taken as representative of any Democratic position whatsoever.
Ok so much for the theme rant. Many best wishes to all, I have wrapping to do before 3.
biggest lump of coal? Jeebus, this could be a Lonnng list:
1. GWB
2. Cheenee
3. Rumsfeld
4. Peter Pace
5. Babs Comstock
6. Barabara Bush (and yes there *was* contaception available back then)
7. FEMA
8. White House press corpse (except Helen, of course)
9. Snotty McFelon and Tony Snow-job
10. Rush Limpbaugh
I could go on….
but I’m sure more will come rushing into my head as soon as I hit submit.
Merry Christmas to all at FDL!
A big lump of coal to the Iraqis for not appreciating our gift of Democracy.

Even we neo-cons air our greivances.
From the previous thread -
jeffreyw @ 106 - Tks so much for the Boston Globe link; one of the best Christmas presents I can think of is the anticipation of many informative investigations. Maybe the FDL family can keep a on-going announcement sort of thing as to who’s gonna be on when on C-Span.
tejanarusa @ 110 - Your seasonal music selection sounds perfect!
Hmmm…
I just finished reading this LA Times editorial on Paul Wolfowitz…
Remember the guy who said that our troops would be “greeted as liberators”?
Or that “the notion that it will take several hundred thousand U.S. troops to provide stability in post-Saddam Iraq” was “wildly off the mark”?
Though I think that the Tribunized Times was being way too nice to Wolfy, it still caused me to remember him…
And how much he deserves a big lump of coal tomorrow for being the “architect” of this failed war.
Btw… Hi, everyone! : )

How you feel about the weather does depend on your point of view. I love hearing people complain about how cold it is here in northern Virginia, having lived in Boston and worked in Russia. My cousin wintered over at the South Pole, he said it’s not as cold as you think because you bundle up to your eyebrows and limit outdoor exposure.
Protest at SMU Targets Bush Library
The likelihood that the George W. Bush presidential library will be located at SMU has not been welcome news for at least one segment of the university community. A letter, dated December 16, from “Faculty, Administrators, & Staff” of the Perkins School of Theology to R. Gerald Turner, president of the Board of Trustees, is now circulating not only on the SMU campus but also among a wider academic community, urging the board to “reconsider and to rescind SMU’s pursuit of the presidential library.”

I must keep thoughts about a certain Senator from NY out of my head. At least until the day after tomorrow.

weeellll…not exactly totally empty. Ya got your scale model White House made of papier mache confetti from shredded docs. And the beautiful wallpaper! All the redactions from Gonzo’s memos. Stunning!
Don’t forget copies of My Pet Goat!
The thought of Obama running makes me so tired. Democrats never seem to learn. Since they don’t have an authority figure, since they are afraid to stand for anything for fear of alienating someone — anyone? — they are reduced to running a charismatic for pres. And often some guy who can’t keep his charisma in his pants. Jeebus, you’d think it didn’t matter who got elected president!
Blank Kludge @ 33
Well, yes. Oh, and I’m sure that the kiddies will love the interactive Abu-Ghraib exhibit, and that the teens will get a thrill out of the 3-D helicopter ride that allows them to see what Bush saw in NOLA after Katrina hit…
But really, what the heck will they be able to put in the actual library?
“My Pet Goat”?
HotFlash @ 35
Well then, whom would you like to see as the Democratic nominee?
atdnext @ 36
the library will be a think tank who’s task will be rewriting the history books trying to make bush look competant

1.) Somebody who stands for something? Someone with a plan?
The whole planet in deep shit on several fronts. Let’s see, there’s Al Gore, there’s Russ Feingold, for starters.

Do you see them as charismatic?

HotFlash - nodding on Obama. What worries me is the number of quite progressive folks I meet who have no blog context and who express excitement about Obama. They saw “the speech” and think he’s a bloody progressive hero.

msmarks in 43, What gets lost in the discussion of cost of campaigns and all that money is the benificiaries. The media conglomerates. I don’t know what percentage of a presidential campaign’s money is spent on TV ads but is is a massive injection of cash ever presidential election cycle. Of course media types are going to talk with objectivity about reducing this massive amount of income. Hah! That would really be fair and balanced.

1. While I have admired Feingold, it doesn’t look like he’s running. Oh, and yes, who could argue about Gore? Still, how is it that these two individuals stand for something, yet Obama stands for nothing? Again, no offense… I’m just asking. : )
2. Sorry… It’s been a while since I had to take grammar lessons. ; )
feingold already said he’d havea tough time saying no

We got up and everybody got all gussied up for church. I ironed and put on a tie and everything. Hey, Merry Christmas, now go home!
atdnext @ 51
No offense taken at all. Thanks for asking.
The ones I mentioned have shown a support for basic principles that our country holds in (supposedly) in high regard. Each one has had the courage to speak out for these ideals at times of vulnerability for their own personal success. To me, that says these leaders hold the good of the people/country in respect.
Each one is charismatic in unique ways but it all comes from a sense of authenticity, not contrivance.
i thought obama was gonna be great, the first time i heard him speak… but somebody name 3 times he stood up and defended anything we believe in.
I am pro-choice. Therefore, I don’t want the supposed front-runner for the Dem nomination for prez in 2008 forced down my throat. Am I fixated or what!
adtnext @ 57 — It has been my fervent hope that Obama is simply running around raising his profile, and that he will not ultimately declare this time around. His experience is too thin at this point. The opposition will peel him like a grape.
Smartest thing he could do is to sponsor or co-sponsor a couple of high-profile pieces of legislation, then go back home and run for governor. If he demonstrate the ability to carry downstate Illinis in a truly contested election, then he’s got legs.
BTW, I’m born and bread in small-town southern Illinois. Still get back there every 18 months or so. Anyone who argues that race is no longer an issue in America is kidding themselves.

Here’s a linky to some of the work that he’s done while in the Senate…
While I agree with you that he hasn’t doen much on some of the high-profile issues that we want to see action on (like Iraq!), he has done some important stuff on nuclear non-proliferation and open government.

Why a successful woman is never right
So when golfer Colin Montgomerie was dumped by Eimear, his gorgeous wife, it had nothing to do with his failures (his lengthy tours of duty, during which Mrs M was left to bring up three children on her own), because that would mean Eimear was capable of deductive thinking. No, instead, she must be a blonde ballbreaker who left her loyal husband on a whim.

Regarding the coming prez primaries. I have made a decision on who I don’t want.
so many coal worthies this year … how could anyone pick a fave?
on Obama - my problem with him is his immediate alignment with the DLC, his enthusiastic triangulation, his “bipartisan” talks that claim us progressives are not religious enough and his willingness to suck up to Rick Warren etc. His lack of experience suggests a lot of hubris in his willingness to even consider running - and his lack of any strong legislative stands (even ones I disagree with) suggests an empty suit. The lack of enthusiasm for him from people I respect like Maxine Waters also concerns me.
Add in my impressions when I saw him speak here to constituents (I am one) during which he refused to take a stand on anything in front of a very supportive audience … and the treatment by his staff of constituents who go to the office to try and get a meeting about issues (”we only do issues in DC”)
I have a feeling we will see ourselves with an Obama candidate and will regret it - I think he could get elected (he’s very slick and very “appealing” - tho surprisingly short and slight in person which may work against him - does not have a physical gravitas, he definitely looks better on tv) - but we will have a government run by the DLC operatives like Rahm and friends.
I want someone in the WH in 2008 who does not support what’s being done by us (America) in Iraq and does not support the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza. Period.
atdnext @ 21
wolfowitz is like the nazis that slunk off to brazil, argentina and uraguay after world war II. he, like dougie feith, think it’s perfectly ok to hide in plain sight and expect to not be held accountable for the hell they willfully created. i agree 100% about wolfowitz. please add feith to your list, and michael ledeen.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 79
Same here.
I absolutely can’t stand Biden… He’s just a no-go.
As for the unnamed Senator from NY, I’d prefer that we not revisit all that melodrama.
And while I agree with at least 90% of what Dennis Kucinich does, I just don’t see how he can run a successful campaign in ‘08. (Same goes for Mike Gravel.)
Waccamaw @ 40-
Thanks. Happy Holidays!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 79
I’m with you — and I’m a constituent!
I just read this on TalkLeft and have to post it here. Monica Lewinsky graduated from the London School of Economics with an M.S. in social psychology. Her thesis topic was: In Search of the Impartial Juror, An Exploration of the Third Person Effect and Pre-Trial Publicity. What an encouraging example of someone turning her life around–no coal for her.
Boy, the internet connection here at my parents’ house is fast. It takes less than fifteen minutes to download an episode of Battlestar Galactica. I’m going to get spoiled.
fahrender @ 82
Oh, yes, yes…
But I especially want a big lump of coal for Wolfy because he’s been able to avoid Judgment Day so far by hiding behind his nice, cushy job at the World Bank. Now he’s talking about “saving Africa”, but let’s not forget how he fucked up Iraq…
Really, why do people trust this creep to “save Africa”?
Do we care that little about the people over there?
TRex @ 87
Wow, that’s fast. ; )
Given the gathering Armada in the Persian Gulf, I am reluctant to part with my lumps of coal.
My meanderings around left blogistan leave me with the impression who we need (Dem ‘08) doesn’t really exist. At least, nobody seems to have ‘it’, that is just self-evident (yet). EVERYBODY has a ‘fatal flaw’ more or less.
What I get is a sketch that looks like Teddy Kennedy’s passion, ideas and policies. Without being Teddy.
Just my impression.
Right now, I’m thinkin’ the closest is G08e.
Adtnext - a Wolfiwitz tale: he offered to speak (and was accepted) by a business conference I attend each year. The attendees - primarily corporate senior execs who work on sustainability issues were in an uproar about this while the organizers felt that it might be interesting since the World Bank impacts so many programs. The reception he got was so chilly I was stunned, his speech unintelligable, and the first question was “why should we believe anything you say when you lied us into a criminal war?” I will say he was good at handling the situation - but he was not well received and even those who felt it was good to have him speak, agreed that he was simply a figurehead forced by the US on the World Bank and incapable of getting good results.
Blank Kludge @ 91
Well, I agree with you in that none of these candidates is “perfect”.
No one is really “blameless”…
And the person who in my mind is the closest thing to an ideal progressive, Dennis Kucinich, just can’t win. When he talks about the Department of Peace or about his ideal budget or about whatever, he just comes across as too “starry-eyed” and a little like Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown before he was reincarnated as Mr. “Tough-on-crime”.
Siun @ 92
Now THAT’s a heart-warming tale!
atdnext @ 88
i think we should “follow the money” and determine just who saw to it that wolfie got selected for that job. it certainly wasn’t just a throw of the dice.
we also need to shine our lights on the MSM trying to make either hillary or obama become the foregone conclusion for democratic presidential candidate in ‘08. it’s more than a little similar to the way fuckwad got “chosen” in 2000. this is not just random speculating. this is cultivated calculation.
finally, i side with those who say that obama is too inexperienced and too lacking in principle. we have no idea what we would be getting, unless there is “no there there”. chauncey gardener maybe?
Siun @ 92
Yep, it sounds like Wolfy’s doing “a heckuva job” helping the world’s poor…
Oh, and a sidenote:
I’m reading a fascinating book on the subject right now. : )
My Airing of Grievances is dedicated to Senate Bill 3930 The MCA
