Social Misfit Wingnuts, Possessed By Evil, Always Ruin the Party
One of the best parts of writing about the right wing’s racist war against brown people, which they hide under the rhetoric of “law enforcement,” is the joy of watching them speak their actual minds in response. Establishment media, take note: this is the political base of the right wing cocktail circuit people you take oh so seriously. To wit:
Do you people really think you can just utter complete nonsense like comparing the ICE raids to Nazi Germany and not have consequences of those HATEFUL words? I suggest to ICE that perhaps people who are accusing our government of being like Nazis ought to spend some time in our nice Nazi concentration camps with the illegals… Make sure you keep the ovens on till they get there!
Do any of you so called liberals ever consider the diseases that the illegals bring into the country?
Indeed, the end of yesterday’s comment thread provides a cornucopia of racist rant, howling at the moon, because once the cretins crash the party, posting comment after comment. . . to themselves, the sane move on. I was just watching Ghostbusters, and the scene at Rick Moranis’ party where the demon jumps out onto the food table reminded me exactly of what happens around here when I write about the racist base of the anti-immigration “Hate the Brown People First” movement. Moranis says, “Okay, who brought the dog?”
All this because they can’t comprehend that a death camp is a species of concentration camp, but that concentration camps are not uncommon or even unique in U. S. history. How many Japanese Americans did we round up during World War II? From yesterday’s post, a quotation from Lambert at Correntewire:
Incidentally, if I’d meant “death camp,” I would have said “death camp.” See wikipedia (sorry, CD):
In the English-speaking world, the term “concentration camp” was first used to describe camps operated by the British in South Africa during the 1899-1902 Second Boer War. Allegedly conceived as a form of humanitarian aid to the families whose farms had been destroyed in the fighting, the camps were used to confine and control large numbers of civilians as part of a Scorched Earth tactic.
I’m sorry to harsh everyone’s egg nog buzz so close to Christmas, and I hope you can handle your own wingnut friends and relatives at the office party or the family dinner with some detachment and humor, because these people are truly crazy, and eliminationist to a degree that would make Eichmann proud, if they could but gain the power:
I want our government to do it’s damn job and I want these TRAITORS to be deported with the illegals. I am SHOCKED at the ignorance of these people about the problem. They have no idea how much they are making a Civil War more possible with every idiotic utterance they make.
These “TRAITORS” refer to, well, me. More on that in a minute, but first, a word about “law enforcement.”
They talk about “law enforcement,” but it’s just a smoke screen. They don’t care about law enforcement. They care about eliminating the brown people, getting them out, because they think we’re being “invaded” by inferior races who will dilute our imagined white European cultural purity and Anglo heritage. Don’t be distracted by their dishonest “law enforcement” arguments. There is no meaningful enforcement of laws against offending corporations, which we around here support. At the end of the day, they want to round up 11 or 12 million families, women and children, including many native born, citizen Americans, and deport them. Nevermind that the Constitution forbids the deportation of American citizens on these grounds. That’s how you know the “law enforcement” issue is a fraud. They want to eliminate the brown people.
Now, I will grant you wingnuts one thing, and I can say this now because your beloved Republican establishment has sold you out. There are some of us “assimilated” latinos who have been planted here and nurtured through generations to pollute the racial and cultural purity of America, so on that score, you have found us out. Some of us may be of mixed racial extract, but our loyalties are not to the glorious white Christian race. Some of us are even light skinned and educated (so, cleverly, we blend in), but we’re here as part of an advanced fifth column to abet the invasion. Ever heard of a guy named Markos Moulitsas?
When will you come for us all in the cattle cars? Good luck getting Tancredo or someone like him elected president, because until then, all your white women (the ones who cross the street to avoid you) belong to us. Just ask St. John McCain or Rudy Guiliani.

You had to bring up the wingnut relatives, didn’tcha?
Pach, keep on tellin’ it. For the wingnuts it’s all about “appearances”. They don’t mind what is *done* to the brown people, only what it is *called*.
Jane, we all have them.

Yah, and I added a little parenthetical comment, just to make more clear whom ‘m addressing. Refresh the page to see it. I meant to have it in the first draft, but somehow left it out.
I think we’re going to face the ugly fact that the next time we have a Democrat in the White House there is going to be a rash of right-wing terror attacks.

Yes, we do… and I’m very excited to hear how their daughters like the Arianna Huffington book they’re getting from Uncle TSF the day after tomorrow! hee hee!
At thanksgiving, only the male wingnut of the we-watch-fox-news wingnut relative couple showed up because the female had had a fight with her daughter and didn’t want to be in the same house with her. This was explained in whispers to most of the ‘normalish’ relatives before said male wingnut showed up. When he got there, he proceeded to tell us, at great length and detail how the no-show female has IBS and was currently having uncontrollable diarrhea. Apparently thinking that would be less embarrassing.
Taunting the wingnuts, Pach? Don’t forget to wish ‘em all a hardy Happy Holidays!
I just found out that a local family, originally from the Dominican Republic, has lost their father to a jail sentence of a year and a half, then deportation. He has worked here for 14 freakin years, bought a 2 family house, and took on 3 jobs to pay the mortgage. The kids are citizens, one is putting herself through college. And now they are about to become homeless!! Jesus, what has happened to this immoral and amoral country of ours?

LOL. So apt, so true.
Funny how you never hear Poppy Bush talking about “the little brown grandchildren” now that they’re all grown up and intercoursing with champagne bottles on teh internets.
Well, there are real racists out there and assholes like Virgil Goode, but: it won’t help the Democrats or the Nation if we pretend that it’s OK (a matter of principle) for people to just walk into the US, take jobs without filing W-2s with legitimate SSNs, etc.
So why aren’t we putting the Human Resources Vice-Presidents whose staffers didn’t get I-9s from job applicants into concentration camps? Seems to me, the people IN AUTHORITY in these corporations are the ones really responsible for diluting our worker gene pool, browning it down….
Art Torres – chairman of the California Democratic Party – said it best:
Soon – due to the demographic victories alluded to above – these Anglo racist’s dreams of mass deportations will be meaningless as more and more of our leaders – such as Art Torres or Antonio Villaraigosa – take charge. Soon it will be us who will drive the Anglo interlopers out of Aztlan!
I urge everyone to redouble their efforts and demand that your Democratic Congresspersons work even more closely than they are now with the Mexican government. Demand that they completely and fully cooperate with Mexico to assist migration by any means necessary.
It’s nice to see that you have minimized the debate on this issue. I really expected more constructive thought from one of my favorite daily stops on the web. I suppose that it is easier for you to approach a serious problem with your version of frat boy/girl humor. Why is it racist to enforce immigration policies? Do you seriously believe that an open border is good for our country? The statistics I’ve quoted in previous comments are from reliable sources easily found on the web with a simple Google search yet you simply respond with what you consider humor. I simply ask that you seriously look into the affects of the influx of illegal aliens here in the southwest. The crime statistics are documented, the disease (TB etc) statistics are documented, and the economic costs are documented. Maybe this is not happening in your part of the country, but I assure you that the problems are very real here in Texas, Arizona, California, and other states in the region.
I proudly voted Democratic, and I sincerely hope
that my party can make effective change that will benefit all of US.
Nobody denies illegal immigration is a problem. However lying racist organizations like FAIR aren’t interested in law enforcement, they’re interested in cultural purity.
Another problem is with laws which are unenforceable or illogical. Just because some legislators write a law and get it passed doesn’t mean that it can be enforced at all, or should be enforced. Some laws, ESPECIALLY laws written by rich white guys regarding poor brown guys, are bad unenforceable evil laws.
Finally, we are a nation of immigrants more than we are a nation of laws. If every immigrant left this nation, there would be a small population of Native Americans remaining. If every law were enforced in this nation, we would probably ALL be in jail.
Finally, I have to confess to being part of this invading-brown-people assimilationist plot. While completely white myself, with ancestry back on the Mayflower, I confess that during the 1980’s I cohabitated with an extremely hot first-generation American of Argentinian heritage. She did her best to turn me to the Dark Side, and the only reason she failed was for lack of a catchphrase. I’ve heard “once you go black you never go back,” but she was stumped by “once you go Argentinian, you never… “
Fortunately for the FAIR-crowd, I ended up marrying an inbred Polack, so our kids are whiter-than-white. I’m sure the racist crowd are happy I escaped my close shave with miscegenation.
As we are enriched by the Latin culture and strengthened by their hard work, we look forward to a rise in their numbers. There will always be bigots that would like to turn back the reality of an increasing Latin population. The good that emanates from that population will overcome these futile attempts to stem the tide.
Well, hell.

In our part of Alaska the biggest influx of immigrants is from Russia and the Ukraine. Their children, many of whom barely speak TV English, have impacted our schools to the point that several elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school have signs in the halls in English and Russian. Wasilla High School even has a Russian language weekly school student bulletin. The impact on schools is so severe, that several have failed repeatedly to meet NCLB standards, and are now losing Fed funding, rather than getting MORE Fed funding, which is what they need – for language specialists, etc.
These families and kids – many are friends – are almost all Evangelical Christians. Some have stretched the Jackson-Vanik line rather flexibly to get their kinsfolk into the USA.
Guess what? Somehow the INS has NEVER had a problem with these light-skinned, often blond-and-blue-eyed families. Even when laws are broken.
Good one Pach,
Reading those comments from the thread last night left me reeling.
I sometimes think of David Neiwert as bit over the top in the realm of racism and intolerance ala how James Howard Kunstler can frequently be viewed in oil and energy arena.
And then I read these types of comments and realize that the occasionally hyperbolic rhetoric of the leftist blogs isn’t so far off the mark after all.
People like Zorro and Brad are among those to which I refer to as America Haters. In effect, everything they say and believe is the antithesis of what this nation stands for. Let’s keep calling them out on it.
They’re like some sad pathetic Willy Lomanesque clown writ large railing against the unfairness of it all. Perfect demographic for Bill O’Reilly.
IMHO, they can all go just fuck off.
The reason these bastards are so against the whole idea of an amnesty is because it will strip the “what don’t you understand about illegal” fig leaf from their ugly racism.
The wingnut fascination with discussing a new civil war in this country is something to be concerned about. I know of some idiots around here actually training for this. The combination of gun nuts, wingnuts, religious nuts and neofascists are swirling together into a very dangerous segment of society.
You just go right ahead and harsh the egg nog buzz. Great statement. Thanks.
Aaagh-long, impassioned post lost in cyberspace by a random finger-click – and I see, while i was writing, the wingnut contingent has shown up.
Do they keep an RSS feed for this topic? Weird.

“If every immigrant left this nation, there would be a small population of Native Americans remaining. If every law were enforced in this nation, we would probably ALL be in jail.”
Not according to the prevalent view expressed on this site, that once you are born here or have an “anchor baby” here you are a legal citizen.
My family came in through the “front door”. We did not sneak in the dead of night through the “back door”.
stop the invasion @ #18,
Read my #22. The problem as Pach sees it isn’t in “stopping the invasion” or illegality per se. It is in the racially biased implementation of INS policies. If I see a problem with treatment of this – and other issues – here, it is the blinders many commenters seem to have re Fed policies during the Clnton administration. During that time, the INS also cracked down harder on Latinos than on any other sub-group of immigrants.
Just because the Texas state government is unwilling to share its illegal immigrant bounty with stressed local agencies is no reason to blame the immigrants themselves, as known leftie Carole Keeton Strayhorn reports in the first detailed look by a state at the impact of undocumented immigrants on its budget.
Even Virgil Goode’s own supporters in his own district will see, someday, that it’s corporate America taking away their jobs, not illegals:
Culprit: “exodus of jobs”
Bright Shiny Object: “images of immigrants coming to the United States and finding work”
Bookwoman – you should know that the story you told of your Dominican man’s deportation is not unusual. Ever since the last immigration “reform” of 1996, the interpretation and enforcement of the law have led to thousands of perfectly good citizens being deported and excluded forever. “Excluded” means you can’t come back in for any reason.
There wasn’t a lot of attention paid to this outside the immigrant communities until things got stepped up after 9/11.
There were already detention prisons (some run by our “privatization” prison companies) for people awaiting deportation – that includes people who’d lost their applications for asylum–but many more have been built, and many more people dumped there, like those from the Swift raid.
Once you’re in one of those, it’s pretty much a matter of “abandon all hope ye who enter here.” If you’ve appealed, or your country of origin doesn’t want you, or for other Kafkaesque rationales, you can just be left there, waiting. You have no sentence, so no idea how long you might be there.
Decisions on issues such as asylum are arbitrary in the extreme. The ‘96 law allowed customs/immig officials at ports of entry to decide whther someone had a “well-founded fear of persecution” should be allowed in, pending app for asylum.
Now, having presented asylum cases (pre-’96) to immigration judges, who are lawyers, having worked for months to collect evidence for the reasons for my clients’ fears to return home, I can tell you, there is virtually NO chance a fearful non-English-fluent person fleeing death threats, etc, just coming off a 12-hr plane ride, is going to make a good case to the (not-a-lawyer) aiport immigration official.
To me, this immigration “process” since ‘96 was the first step down the slope we’re on since 9/11/Buschco-lsoing the civil and human rights Americans have taken for granted for 230 years.
Whew.sorry that’s so long. I get angry about this. Thanks Pach, for keeping it on top.

A telling remark made years ago by someone, I forget who:
Ask 10 Democrats for an opinion on a current political issue, you’ll get 10 answers.
Ask 10 REpublicans, you’ll get 1 answer…from the Borg Mind.
Funny how many high interest mortgage companies are giving sub-prime loans to brown people. They quite actively forge the applications so that a family can get into an overpriced house (particularly in CA). Then the bread winners must work two or three jobs to cover the ever growing payment. Often the terms of the loans are not explained. Many brown people are losing their homes. They have spent huge amounts of money on the front end to get into this bloated real estate. Makes me sick.
One point invariably ignored by trolls is that for many current immigrants, there really is no ‘front door’. When our forebearers arrived on these shores, the hardships they encountered were mainly economic; today, those wishing to immigrate are subject to quotas so restrictive that the waiting list for residents of Mexico without family members who are U.S. citizens may be literally decades long.

Egregious – part Cherokee here!
My mom once researched and found she actually qualified for a spot on the reservation.
Here’s what happens when hotel workers decide they have as much a right to a living wage as any other worker covered by a local living wage ordinance: they suddenly show up on a no-match list conveniently provided to their employer by the Social Security Administration.
So, low-wage incorrectly documented workers are acceptable until they decide they have the same rights to a living wage as any other worker in Emeryville. Then, once the workers start to demand these living wage rights, the owner becomes very interested in “papers.” Classic exploitative corporatist behavior, surely going on everywhere.
ET–I’m fascinated to hear how many Russian and Ukrainian immigrants you have in Alaska. Same weather, more freedom, why not?
Siun @ 44
That’s 3 from Cherokee Nation. I declare a quorum.
I love the way you never aghue the facts but just call everyone a racist, hate monger, creten, etc. Why are you not in Mexico arguing for the rights of say Chinese people to come to Mexico and get freebies from that government? Why is it always a brown person complaining about white people not taking care of them. If you guys can’t take care of yourselves why do us whites have to? The whites have had this land for 500 years and look what we have done with it. Your people have been in Mexico for who knows how long and have done nothing. Must the whites take care of your people like little children? Talk about no pride in yourselves.
TeddySanFran @ 46
Oh.my.God.
Every time I think I’ve heard it all…but off course, it’s just a “war on terra” escalation of the long-standing threat to call immigration when a worker demands his wages/rights.

The issue is proportion and a total lack of honesty in government and the media. All of which is then fueled by bigots.
Illegal immigration may be a problem to some degree but it is impossible to know and it hardly matters at this point. The over-arching issue is our country’s illegal employment problem.
Until we raise the minimum wage and enforce labor laws (conditions & wages), illegal immigrants will continue to be recruited en masse as they have been for decades. The illegals are here because U.S. employers have created a market for them and the U.S. economy has grown to depend on them. We need them, albeit for different reasons, but just as much as they need us.
Once here, not only are they exploited on the employment front, but they also suffer as “bigot fodder,” i.e. being blamed for problems not of their making and not of the ability to control.
Our illegally exploited brothers and sisters are not responsible for bringing down (and HOLDING DOWN) wages, for ending vaccination and public health programs or for public spending priorities that make joining a prison guard union more attrative than pursuing globally competitive education.
– Fix our illegal employment/employer problem.
– Fix our wage and education problem.
– Fix (literally, call the vet) our bigot problem.
– Then tell me if we still have an illegal immigration problem. If in fact we do, I suspect it will be on a small enough scale that a federal agency can handle it without resorting to concentration camps.

short answers to short questions:
Yes, it is hard for them to understand. Almost impossible, in fact.
I shouldn’t feed the trolls – but – I believe it has been earlier explained here why there’s no such thing as an “anchor baby.” Under the ‘96 law, US citizen kids get sent home with the deported parent. Having a child born here, even one of “tender age” needing a mother’s care, does NOT get you the “stay-here-free” card. Nope. You just get to take the English-speaking, frightened citizen kid with you…if you aren’t sent off as soon as you’re picked up.
Of course, you can choose to leave the kids behind…some do, if there is anyone who can care for them.

4. Go to work in the pick up that was purchased at the end of last year for 19.25% interest and sucks oil directly from the tankers docked in, of all places, the port of New Orleans. That city where all of the black people used to live.
5. Park the truck at work at the far end of the Burger King parking lot. Spend the next eight hours over the vat of hot oil making fries.
6. Go home. Spend your free time on the sofa watching TV eating. Do not move until it is time to get back in the water bed.
7. Under NO circumstances think about the reason you are in this situation. Buy directly into the Repugs propaganda that all of your problems will be solved if brown or black people just go away somehow. Never consider that the divide being created is in the interest of large ass corps.
8. After retiring to bed pray to god that your child in Iraq will make it home safely.

Thank you for your insight coming from your own personal involvement. This does not bode well for the family I wrote about. We are currently trying to work with a lawyer, the social worker from the childrens’ school, and any other agencies that might be able to help, but it will take a massive amount of money and support to see this family through this crisis. Yes I’m still along for the thread. I appreciate the comments, even the name calling :)
We are fighting illegal immigration the same stupid way we fight the war on drugs – at the street level.
In the war on drugs, it’s very popular to throw dark-skinned users and street level dealers in the pokey.
What about if we threw the bankers who were turning a blind eye to where their deposits came from in the pokey instead? Clinton tightened money laundering regs, and Bush promptly loosened them back up (wonder if we could have tracked the 9/11 terrorists any better with the Clinton regs in place? hummmmm)
With regards to illegal immigration, same-same: throw the brown-skinned supply of labor in the pokey.
I’d prefer we attack the source that attracts illegal immigration – the employers.
Not to mention the folks that brought us NAFTA (and that includes Clinton) that creates such misery for working Mexicans.
I’m dead set against illegal immigration, but throwing the illegal in jail isn’t going to solve the problem.
On a tangent, FWIW, we did indeed intern German Americans during WWII at places like Crystal City, TX. Not on the scale of Japanese internment, but it happened.
Goopers are tryin their very best to make political hay out of Hispanic Americans..
They’ve got a sizable group screamin bloody murder- but unfortunately for them- it’s all goopers doin the screamin- no additional votes- no additional congressional seats- no joy in gooperville.
Should the borders be wide open to anyone who wants to sneak across? Probably not- but solving that problem is way too complex for the gooper smear machine- they only do hatred- not problem solving.
Hey, egregious-
I come from exactly the same mixed-marriage. Don’t know if the in-laws were freaked. My dad just never went to church(at least not after I got too old be in the [Lutheran] Christmas pageant, so it wasn’t an issue.
My mother’s church friends joked that the church roof would fall in if my dad showed up there…
sorry abou that:
what the Nazis and the Ustashi did during WWII was unbelievably vile that it holds a unique place.
Nasty topic overall so I leave you all to it.
I can only say that my Spanish comes in handy these days and I have been delighted to befriend a number of recent arrivals to the NY area. Nice people overall…though there probably are some who aren’t nice and shouldnt be here.
egregious @ 63
When my aunt got married in 1956, no one told my great-grandmother he was Catholic until they were driving to the church. Grammy Hawkins was furious and yelled at my grandmother (whose fault this was, somehow) “We’ve had pirates and prostitutes in this family, but never a Catholic!”
Egregious, I didn’t address that fallacy, but StI did say that. You’re correct, having a baby here grants the parent no special priviledges.
In Guatamala- all indians are “Mayan” perhaps a similar issue.
The trolls have one solution to everything: hurt someone, that’ll learn’em. So, it isn’t enough to send illegal immigrants home, we have to hurt them and their families, lock’em up, treat them like garbage, that’ll learn’em. It isn’t enough to deal with the Iraqi people and the Iranians and others, we have to invade, convert, bomb and bring them to their knees.
Sadists. I wonder how they punish their kids when the kids screw up? Beatings, public humiliation in Church?

And that is, of course, the whole point. Somewhere I saw a report that ‘Murikins were lined up all day outside the Swift plant to apply for the jobs the brown people stole from them.
News flash, dudes. It wasn’t the brown people who took the good jobs away…
Having a citizen in the family helps with some immigration issues- but perhaps not until the citizen is an adult.
Diogenes @72
“I’d prefer we attack the source that attracts illegal immigration – the employers.
Not to mention the folks that brought us NAFTA (and that includes Clinton) that creates such misery for working Mexicans.”
Even a “racist troll” like me agrees 100% with that statement. Exploitation of anyone regardless of skin color is wrong.
Not only that spurious (@40), but history shows that our immigrations policies invariably only opened a “front door” for people (of a certain color) from (a certain geographic region) populated by people (of a specific religious orientation). We’ll call them Group 1.
Obviously, that excludes the group of people (of a certain color) from (a certain geographic region) that Group 1 willingly brought here to sell and own for purposes of extracting hard labor. We’ll call them Slaves, err Group 2.
Meanwhile, the wingnuts simply bypass the historical impact of the third group of people (who are not of the certain color that would include membership in Group 1), and (do not live in the correct geographic region). Nevermind the hard labor provided and riches earned off the backs of these (wrong-colored) immigrants who are truly responsible for the actual building of this nation’s once-strong infrastructure, along with Group 2. Nevermind the strong family bonds and ethics of a mass majority, they are the wrong color, period.
Interesting aside, often these Group 3 immigrants arrrive with the (proper religious orientation), but when all is said and done with the racist wingbats, religious beliefs actually rank far below color of skin and from whence they came.
Like Pach mocks in his 2nd-to-last paragraph, if they can’t see you are a person (of color) then here ya go…(front door opens).

I do not reflexively call people who disagree with me trolls, and do welcome other points of view. This is a complicated problem, and we will need to develop consensus with a large number of people in coming up with answers.

You’re right, the odds are stacked against them, but don’t give up. I presume your lawyer is an experienced immigration lawyer? Or at least, a passionate newly-grduated legal services lawyer willing to do the work.
That said, there are so many variables it’s possible he could win his case.
Did you say he has already been sent back, or is he in a holding cell somewhere?
If you have a sympathetic congresscritter sometimes getting them involved helps (like I said, it can be very arbitrary).
If you are a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years old, you are eligible to petition to bring your parents to live and work permanently in the United States.
If you are a lawful permanent resident, you are not eligible to petition to bring your parents to live and work permanently in the United States.
My family came in through the “front door”.
Can you prove it? A lot of people only became legal when they got here after sneaking out of their homes in the night (even from Europe!).
Why is it that so many of the people who are most interested in pulling up the drawbridge and barring the gates and windows are the ones with immigrant grandparents and great-grandparents? Could it be that they’re afraid that they’ll be sent back to wherever they came from?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..&eurl=
The racists are brown supremacists who think law enforcment is equivalent to a Nazi concentration camp. Talk about wild distortions and total mistruths. The TRUTH is ALL of the illegal aliens picked up in the ICE raids who had children WERE LET GO to tend to their children. But you asshats never mention that do ya? The TRUTH is a lot of these illegals and NOT just from Mexico, were using stolen identities and in THIS country it is a felony to use someone else’s identity. I really sincerely hope that one of you illegal alien bleeding hearts gets their identity stolen or gets to see first hand the effects of illegal aliens driving unlicensed vehicles while drinking. Perhaps the point will be driven home to you.. by a head on collison. Perhaps that will wake you Anti-American pigs up then eh?

Perhaps you should go back to whatever planet you came from PJ. I was born here. My ancestors immigrated here LEGALLY. They were not smuggled inside a van. They did not hop a fence. They came to Ellis Island with all the other legal immigrants and they learned English and they learned our culture and they did not wave the flags of the countries they left. They did not hyphenate their names as British-Americans or Scottish-Americans. They became AMERICANS and that is what we don’t see with this recent wave of hateful, arrogant Hispanic INVADERS.

Those elements and cultural links. Waves of Russian emigration to Alaska:
1742-1867 – original Russian colonists – trappers, sailors, missionaries, merchants, crazy visionaries. The Russian Orthodox imprint from these settlers is lasting and very visible.
1917-1990 – two waves of emigres escaping the Soviet system. The initial one was basically anti-Soviet in the classic model, similar to the worldwide pattern of people leaving the early USSR. A majority of Russian Orthodox Old Believers left the USSR. Two contingents made it to Alaska, arriving between the 1950s and early 1980s. The Old Believers are a lasting and viable cultural community.
1990 to the present – Evangelicals from the old USSR, taking advantage of the provisions of the Jackson-Vanik statutes. Before the downfall of the USSR, most Soviet citizens taking advantage of J-V were Jewish, emigrating to Israel. Since 1990, most ex-USSR emigrants taking advantage of J-V have been Evangelicals, moving to many places in the US, but many have favored Alaska.
I find it an interesting phenomenon that among the most recent legal immigrants are those who are very anti-immigration for anyone else.
My hairstylist came here legally from the Caribbean. I was surprised to learn that she is vehemently anti-immigration in general. Maybe it’s an issue of competition, or having her status confounded with other people? Would be interested in hearing an explanation.

I realize in retrospect that the “front door/back door” comment was a reactionary statement. My apology. I enjoy FDL greatly and come here hourly to educate myself on a wide range of issues. At one time I’m ashamed to say, I was anti-gay marriage, but in reading the posts on that topic, I learned how morally wrong my view was. and that it is a matter of equal rights. I have gained understanding on a number of topics and viewpoints expressed here. I am simply trying to gain additional perspective on how we can resolve the problem of illegal immigration which in my part of the country is a serious issue or if there is even a solution at all. In the pursuit of knowledge I will make mistakes and I know that others have strong viewpoints that they will express in, at times juvenile ways. The bottom line is communication and the free exchange of ideas on this site and I will do my best to never abuse this forum.
Quote:
————————————————-
People like you are just hurting the cause of the real honest hard working illegal immigrants who are trying to make a better life. Because of haters like you, all illegal immigrants get lumped into the same pile of haters. Keep up the good work. It is motivating thousands of Americans every day to stand up to your racism, your hatred, your arrogance and your attempts to destroy what makes this country great. We are a nation of laws and we respect our laws, unlike Mexicans. We have actual law enforcement, unlike Mexico. And that law enforcement is going to only increase until all illegal aliens have no employer because no employers will want to risk hiring them and that is our goal. Illegal aliens are not wanted here. We will pick our own damn lettuce thank you very much.
Furthermore, the worn out argument that they are doing the jobs Americans won’t do is total bullshit. In the northeast they are taking union construction jobs from Americans and making it impossible for companies who don’t hire illegals to compete. In the north east we are cracking down on ALL employers of illegals and we boycott any who hire them. I will NEVER allow a company to do lawn work or any kind of work on my home if they employ illegal aliens. And we are seeing many, many people here start to ask those questions and soon.. they will find they have no jobs and then they will have no place to live so they will have to find another country to sponge off of.
Hell you can practically hit Russia with a rock from part of Alaska.
ET–And of course the original migration across the so-called land bridge. But that’s been a while.
Interesting choice for them, Alaska. Maybe it feels more at home because there are so many other people there of Russian descent, part of the state’s history, possibly existing Orthodox congregations?
All that and they do like the cold. People in Moscow and St. Petersburg are very unhappy with the current unseasonably warm weather. They want their snow for Novi Gohd, New Year.

What did the European immigrants have to arrange before coming to America during the 1800’s and early 1900’s? Did they apply for legal status?
Nothing I can find says they did. They scraped together the money for passage, and either had enough money to get started or a family to stay with.
Green cards didn’t start until 1940. When my grandparents (on one side) and great-grandparents (on the other side of the family) immigrated it seems they just showed up. I really wish any of them were still alive so I could ask them, but they’re not.
My Gx11 Grandfather came to Connecticut illegally in the 1630s – he lied about his religion to get in as – most likely – indentured servant. Then, when he married, he changed to the religion of his spouse, whose faith was legal.

Your Brit and Scot ancestors learned our language? Wow. Imagine how tough that was, not. And, of course they came through the front door – their people built the damned door!
As for our culture, that’s changed over the past 250 years. The immigration process in any country is meant to be a hurdle one must climb over to gain entry. It is designed that way. Every country has their own kind of hurdle and their own kinds of requirements. The US has the EASIEST immigration system IN THE WORLD. We admit more immigrants than the rest of the world COMBINED. We have the largest PERCENTAGE of immigrants. I don’t want to hear any sob stories about how hard it is to immigrate legally.
If someone is not educated beyond the third grade they will probably not be able to manage legal immigration and that is what we have happening. We have the LOWEST strata of a society from Mexico and South America coming here, subverting the immigration laws because they are poor, they are uneducated and this is the kind of people the immigration laws were designed to KEEP OUT. Why would a country want to take on the lower class poor from other countries? We have enough of our own!
Mexico is exporting their lower class to the US because they don’t know how to make their economy work to provide jobs for these people. Let the illegals go home and demonstrate in their own streets. Oh that’s right.. their government wouldn’t put up with that.. Why should ours?
So Pach, you really do hate America, huh?

Your willingness to reach out, to consider other points of view, to say when you might have gone too far, those are highly valued attributes here.
People on all sides of this issue need to talk with each other to gain a better understanding. The view of progressives alone will not carry the day in Congress. There will be compromises, and we need to understand what other people strongly believe before we can come to a consensus.
And btw [by the way] I appreciate what you say about gay marriage. When my daughter announced her engagement to a woman 2 years ago I had very little time to go from 0 to 100. I’m there, but it was bloody. For me internally I mean. Now I accept it, I get it, I don’t see how other people don’t get it. But it’s a very big change in a short time.
My little 6 year old niece explained it to her friends in Missouri: two brides, two grooms, a bride and a groom, who cares, as long as they love each other? One can hardly improve on that.

My understanding is that before the Civil War, you didn’t need a passport to come in. Sometime in the 19th century, before the Civil War, naturalization procedures were set up, but it appears to have been a matter of going to a local court and swearing allegiance to the US, limited to the head of house and, I think, children over 18 or so. The laws since then have generally tightened naturalization requirements. In the eighteenth century, the German immigrants basically got off the ship and took the oath of allegiance right then; that was pretty much it for formalities.
ET–What surgery? If I may ask. Are you ok?
P J Evans @ 89
Maybe so. What I find ironic about these discussions (well, one thing I find ironic) is that we Americans all are descended from people who came from somewhere else, even the indigenous people. Of course, the indigenous people were the first, and if anyone can claim this place is theirs, it would be they. Fat lot of good it does them.

We have a ton of Evangelical Christian Russian immigrants in Rancho Cordova. Often I see older Russians wearing the clothes that they got off the plane with. It is a wonderful sight. They love to walk in the green belt. I suspect it reminds them of home. They are very severe people who have a basic survival mentality. They harvest the mushrooms from our front yard. They hunt turkeys in the greenbelt with bows and arrows. This is illegal of course. But I don’t care. They bring more dimension to my suburban neighborhood. There are rumors about the Russian mafia having a hold over this community. They are here legally. Some are practicing the fine old tradition of dominating their own community. Illegally, of course. I guess my point is that social groups thrive in all types of situations with varying degrees of “legality”. Hubris in one of the main characteristics of the “American” club. They don’t get that just because they say it should be a certain way that it will be. Sort of like kids who throw a fit when they don’t get what they want for Xmas.

The ACLU does have an Immigrants Rights Project :
http://www.aclu.org/immigrants/index.html
Whether they can take on individual cases depends on the resources of the local/regional branch, but they usually have names of lawyers who volunteer represent individuals.
Is the man in jail serving a sentence? Or awaiting trial? Makes a difference – it’s very important that an immigrant’s criminal defense lawyer understand the effect of pleas on immigration status. Can be malpractice for the defense lawyer to arrange a plea without checking immig consequences.
You see how complicated this gets, very quickly, just on the legal issues. Now, add in the human ones, of losing a home and provider…
It’s wonderful that there are people working to help the family. As we say here, “good on ya, bookwoman.”

What is especially disheartenin’ is that arguments that would have been laughed off the stage of public conversation in the 1970’s are now part of the mainstream dialogue!! What is this shit??!!! If a sitting Senator in the 1970’s had been exposed for the racist words AND deeds of Geo. The netroots actions in the Social Security battle and campaign financing of progressive candidates can be reenacted nationwide to force the issue over Goode’s remarks and force public support of Congressman Ellison on the floor of Congress in January and on the TV screens in living rooms today.

After losing track of our Swedish relatives for about 35 years, our family has been reacquainted with our extended family for the past 14 years or so. This has allowed us to learn the circumstances of the immigration of my great-grandfather, who was a merchant marine, or something like that. The first time I went to Sweden was in 1996. The little church where my great-great-grandfather is buried had a display commemorating the 100 years since the great migration of its citizens to the US. They showed where the bulk of folks went (after Ellis Island), mostly to places like Minnesota and the Dakotas, but also San Diego, CA. Only 1 (My Great Grandfather)ended up in Savannah, Ga. where he met my Great grandmother, a cracker, from way back.
I don’t know the legalities or planning involved in his trip, though I know he took the Olympic, which was from the (White Star Line?) same line as the Titanic, and I think the year was 1912. When I visited I was stunned by the beauty of the place, and expressed surprised that someone would leave such a beautiful place to go to, well, Georgia. That’s when many older families talked about how poor folks were back then and that Elof immigrated in the hopes of better life and a future family- it would seem the same reasons that people continue to come today, though from other parts of the world. He was the only member of his family who left Sweden behind, and I often wonder what he thought of the crackers (my family) that he married into- how they botched every attempt at the Swedish language that the man shared. We learned in the early 1990’s how many of our family members’ names were pronounced (and sometimes even spelled) completely wrong. How hard it must be to leave behind your country, even if times are hard. It must take a special kind of courage. Sorry for the ramble- you all got me thinking today!

Note that this legislation post-dates the completion of the cross-country railroad, a project in which Chinese laborers were seen as mostly disposable (hence, the origin of the phrase, “not having a Chinaman’s chance”).
As for the “Red Scare,” it’s no accident, I think, that the progenitor of the plans which later became known as the Palmer Raids, was none other than J. Edgar Hoover, who showed over the course of his career a paranoia about just about everyone that did not fit his conception of what was a “real” American….

Zorro @ 1:19 pm (#115)
My mother’s ancestors emigrated from Ireland during the Potato Famine. They were demonized as being illiterate, filthy (probably where the term “unwashed” comes from), and a general dilution of the fine American gene pool. What did those Irish do? They took the dirty, dangerous jobs no one else wanted at the wages that were being paid. They became police officers and firefighters, railway workers, meat packers, and who knows what else. They created their own power structures with their own political bosses, and they became part of our society. Any of this sound familiar?
Of course, most folks back then who weren’t part of the indigenous population were descended from English, Welsh, and Scottish settlers. Put one of the people from those countries next to an Irishman, and you wouldn’t be able to tell who was from which country. Yet, many of the inhabitants of the day thought that the Irish “invasion” represented the end of American civilizaton.
When my father’s Italian ancestors showed up here a few decades later, they got much the same treatment. They earned their way into this country the same way the Irish did.
Now it’s the Mexicans and Latin Americans who are the new people. They’ll work harder and pull more than their weight because that’s how it is for immigrants. They aren’t a drain on this society, far from it, actually. And our culture will be the richer for what their artists, intellectuals, and professionals add to it.
Immigrants aren’t the worst of another country. They’re often the best. They’re the people who are smart, ambitious, and courageous enough to come to a new land and start over. I want those people to come here. They’re the ones who make this country great, not all the frightened little people who whine about the new arrivals and how they’re ruining the gene pool or subverting our marvelous culture. I’ll take one of them over five of you any day of the week.

Yeah, even the wingers.
Zorro: You have to realize that the Irish and the Italians had to sink or swim. They had to actually work and work hard for there was no welfare or food stamps, affirmative action programs, free healthcare at the tax payers expense, etc. The Illegals are only here to take advantage of us. They are not an intelligent race or they would not need to come here. It’s time that people grew up and realized that the races and the sexes are not equal. Sad but true. As for anyone calling me a racist I quarantee that if I hooked up ANYONE from this site to a lie detector test and asked if they were racist against other races not one of you here would pass the test. All people are racialy biased it’s just that the blacks and hispanics think that they have the moral high ground when in reality they are the true racist. If these illegals were white or asian do you believe the hispanics would care at all about letting everybody in the country? Hell no. I hope that whites wake up and reralize the truth and will not be intimidated by some dum minority calling them a racist. Who cares what these people think of us. Being racist at this point in time is the best answer to getting rid of the hispanic deadbeats.
I’d be interested in more expansion on the death/concentration camp theme. Talk here has been mostly focused on the theme of immigration and racism but no one seems to pick up on the trend of denying registered sex-offenders housing in certain locations or in the extension of their prison terms by way of civil commitment.
I’m not exactly equating the two but isn’t what is being done to the sex-offender population a defacto path to concentration camps or ghettoization? And is it a slippery slope to further acceptance of facist behavior towards a larger segment of the population who might happen to belong to an unpopular or despised group?
Mmmm,
Brad, Zorro…
Nice batch of racist trolls. And proud to be that like our “friend” Brad gladly admitted..

Pathetic and sad …
I had to spend some time without reading the blog and you had an invasion… I hope the clean up squad is still in the house because these guys deserve to be banned …
Mod note: Since Pach was commenting in this post on the racist tripe that greeted his post yesterday on immigration, we felt it was appropriate to leave the racist comments up. We normally do not tolerate racism on FDL and will return to our normal mod standards after this thread.
Siun @ 164
The Mods here deserve our deepest appreciation!
siun rocks. Mods rock. FDL, too.
Silent Night, everyone.
Thanks Siun,
It is good to know that I will be able to go back enjoying the site as soon as the trash is taken out of the door…
Anyway hat off to the Mods and to all FDL for being the best site where one can go to learn about the ideas of the sanest part of the USA…
Your work is greatly appreciated by your long time Italian reader .. that would be me… :-)
Grazie Kimbal! It’s good to have you here. I wanted to make sure you knew that we aren’t lowering our standards!
Mommybrain! Happy Happy to you! I still carry your lovely homemade soap in my suitcase – since I’ve been travelling almost nonstop, it keeps me mindful of friends and home and good stuff in odd hotel rooms!
What happens when the soldier son of your wet-back gardener is killed in Iraq? How does one deal with that situation?
Tears are not enough.
People are animals. Doesn’t matter who they are or where they come from. We all need the same thing, even if cultures are at odds, the dividing line between inside and outside is easily penetrated.
Siun @ 164
This was really grotesque.
Why would they come to the Lake?
Is it to bully and disrupt and intimidate us?
Is it to insist on their own legitimacy in the face of the strongest evidence to the contrary?
mui @ 134
I really hope we continue to talk about the Swiftplanting of Latino immigrants. I tried to find a charitable link to support work on behalf of the families, and there was no link yesterday through the church, through Catholic Charities, through the United Way or through the AFSC. No website that tells the news and identifies the organizations that are helping and offers a way to contribute on line.
Any one working on this? It would help a lot of us out.

Umm.. what evidence are you referring to? Did someone find some ovens at the detention center? Did anyone see or hear of the illegal aliens being treated in any way but humanely? They are a) illegal and many are b) criminals who stole identities. The US has the right to detain criminals and deport illegal aliens. So what part of that makes the ICE action Nazi like?
I remind all of you here that YOU were the first to cast the stone of accusation and hatred by calling law enforcement Nazis and we who support law enforcement racists. We will continue to support ICE and ASSIST them in identifying and detaining more illegal aliens over the coming months. Go ahead and send your compassion money to these people. I’m sure they will spend it well in Mexico.
Kimba1970 @

Calling ICE a bunch of Nazis is not SANE in any way. It is inflammatory and attempts to incite the ignorant to respond in an emotional and irrational way against those who are being portrayed as Nazis and racists. When Civil War comes to the US, you will have only yourselves to blame for making this into a racial war that it didn’t have to be. We just wanted our laws enforced and it doesn’t matter what color the criminals are. You people are making this racial and filled with hate, not us.

The Swift raids did not target “immigrants” they targeted “illegal immigrants”. There IS a difference. Immigrants come in the FRONT door not in the back of a van.

Oh yeah.. typical of your lot.. ban what you don’t want to hear because it is the truth. Your type are the FIRST to claim your free speech is being stepped on but you are also the FIRST to try to step on the free speech of others if they say what you can’t stand to hear. I have not said *anything* racist beyond some sarcasm that you can go ahead and take literally. I am not a racist and I my best friends are LEGAL immigrants. So you can try to apply the racist label to me but sorry, it won’t stick. That is your way of not listening to the other side – you just don’t want to hear it so you try to ban us. We will not be silenced..
[Mod Note; have we not let you have your say, ad nauseam?]
Cujo359 @

You apparently are not familiar with the Reconquista movement, the goals of Mecha and La Raza who think we are illegal immigrants and should go back to Europe, even though 90% of us were born here. So I don’t want to hear any comparison to the past because this is a new breed of invaders who are arrogant, they are selfish and they expect US to bend over and let their language stand next to ours. This is what we are sick and tired of.. Press “1″ for English. No way Jose. You come to America you learn English and that is exactly what ALL immigrants till this latest wave of ingrates has done. That is why there is a problem. They don’t want to be Americans. They want to be Mexicans sponging off America. Big difference.
Thanks Zorro…
Absurd hate filled rants as the last two or three post of yours are the perfect example of the irrational fear that has changed your once great country in a very sad sight to be seen from the outside..
You have no truth to show, you have no understanding of life and the world beyond your fear and bigotry towards everything that does not comply with your short sight view of society…
Yes I would like to see you banned, not because your mighty “reasoning” skills and understanding of “reality” that could shatter my “dirty hippy” (..thanks Atrios..) approach to life, but because, “mister beacon of truth” I find everything you have to say on the matter dull and not interesting: you have no interest in discussing this important problem, you are only looking for an occasion to give us your stale right-wing talking points.
So yes, I think you do not belong here where people come because they want to use their head for something more that wearing a hat…
And by the way Zorro…
You are a racist: toward latins to start with but I am sure you do not stop there. It shows in every single post you have polluted this thread with
The fact that you deny it speaks volumes on the basic disonesty of your position…
I find the comment sections on Right/Left blogs extremely humorous; talk about mirror imaging! The whole gist of this post is that anti-immigration conservatives are intolerant, as is evident by commentary posted on a blog.
Meanwhile, right here at the “supertolerant” FIREDOGLAKE, one of the comments in the post about the Left Behind videogame advocates killing Christians (admittedly, a moderator posted ’surely you didn’t mean you want Christians killed when you posted as much, right?’, or something approximating that).
Even in the commentary for this post, you can find highly intolerant speech on the left side of the spectrum: One person wrote of the changing demographics in the Southwest US: “Soon it will be us who will drive the Anglo interlopers out of Aztlan!” Does that read like someone who has a better idea for the way politics in this country should be for EVERYONE??
The fact is that you don’t have to move very far from the left side of the political spectrum to find people who post intolerant and thoughtless comments to blogs; there is enough bigotry, hatred, and ignorance to fill every political camp out there, I would say. Just scroll down any posting on this blog, and you will get an eyefull.
I get the feeling that I could not sit in a room and drink a beer with someone who posts here and debate the finer points of immigration policy, or National Security Strategy, without someone raising their voice to screech level and letting the epithets fly.
That’s too bad, because that’s not what I’m about, I know people across the political spectrum who can argue passionately without resorting to ad hominem attacks. Even after a black and tan or two!
Kimba1970 @ 177
You be honest now, please. Zorro has said nothing racist or hateful. His/Her posts have been intelligent and fact-based, albeit a bit passionate.
I have not seen even one statement in response to Zorro’s argument worthy of being considered “debate.” Only name calling and assumptions on the part of illegal alien sympathizers.
That makes those with no opinions, other than screaming “racist”, seem ignorant and rather boring, and obviously fearful of truth. Ban Zorro because we do not agree with his/her posts. hahaha.
A …
Sigh so the troll number is increasing: welcome to the flock… I am not of course the one who decide who is supposed to stay or go on this blog so it should be clear that I speak only for myself and not for FDL but just in case let’s put it in print..
And no your friend Zorro (”Fox” … a Bill O’Reilly intern ?) did not contribute to the discussion as neither did the rest of the fear filled right wingers who posted under this thread… You want to live the illusion that building a nice wall on the border is the solution to immigration ? You want to join your red furred friend and claim your superiority in being a English speaking human being instead a Spanish one? You want to brand a whole country as “arrogant” and “selfish” (mr Zorro words not mine…) so that you can justify any action your country is going to carry out on these scary immigrants? Be my guest, is a free world and you can pollute your mind the way you want. Be aware anyway that all of the above still is a disgusting moral stance and that mincing words around it does not make it stink less awfully…
BobW—is the link to your blog missing a dot before blogspot? If so, it’s interesting that you’re so concerned about reasonable discourse here when the links featured on your blog are to Malkin and the Anchoress, to highlight just a few.
Now those are some sites that are truly tolerant. Perhaps you’d rather be drinking a beer with commenters there?
Attaching such significance to minority opinions like La Raza is like claiming that all of America is bent on enacting the agenda of the Ku Klux Klan because of their writings.
By the way Zorro, in the new civil war who gets to wear blue and who gets to wear grey?

Is ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION a huge problem? Check out these facts:
Depending on which report you read, there are between 12 and 30 million illegal aliens living in the United States. Independent research has determined that U.S. government figures are grossly understated.
The 2000 U.S. Census estimates that more than 400,000 illegal aliens annually cross our borders. Independent studies estimate 500,000 annually.
In 1996, illegal aliens were displacing more than 730,000 American workers annually at a cost of $4.3 billion a year. The situation is much worse today.
Illegal aliens in the U.S. are not doing “jobs Americans won’t do.” Less than 2% work agriculture or landscaping jobs. The majority work in construction, manufacturing, food processing, hospitality and restaurant industries, taking jobs formerly held by American citizens by working for lower wages.
Each illegal alien that gets an ‘over-the-table’ payroll job in the United States has committed identity theft to obtain documents to gain employment. Entering the U.S. illegally is not a felony but identity theft most certainly is.
The current annual costs of illegal aliens from educating the children of illegal aliens in public schools, providing medical services in emergency rooms, and incarceration — amount to about $36 billion per year. Annual fiscal costs in 2010 would increase to $61.5 billion and would rise to $106.3 billion by 2020.
Despite immigration reform laws, federal law and laws in some states prevent social service employees from asking for proof of a welfare applicant’s citizenship status. As a result, 21% of illegal aliens receive some form of state welfare or federal aid. This does not include the aid provided to the children of illegals born on U.S. soil. Each year, state governments spend an estimated $11 billion to $22 billion to provide welfare to illegal immigrants.
In 1980, our federal and state prisons housed fewer than 9,000 criminal aliens. By the end of 1999, these same prisons housed over 68,000 criminal aliens. Today, criminal aliens account for over 29 percent of prisoners in Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities and a higher share of all federal prison inmates.
A recent Department of Homeland Security report notes that in 2005, Federal drug seizures totaled 1,129,275 pounds of cocaine and 6,866,465 pounds of marijuana. Much of that was along the southern border. The report goes on to state that Federal law enforcement now estimates that only 10-30% of illegal aliens are actually apprehended and only 10-20% of the drugs are seized.
According to a 2006 study by the Violent Crimes Institute, an estimated one million sex crimes have been committed by Illegal Aliens in the United States between 1999 and 2006.
Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens, according to statistics released by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. That’s up to 4,380 Americans murdered annually by illegal aliens. King also reports 13 Americans are killed daily by drunk illegal alien drivers for another annual death toll of 4,745.
According to a report in the spring, 2005 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, 84 California hospitals are closing their doors as a direct result of the rising number of illegal aliens and their non-reimbursed tax on the system. While there are 43 million without health insurance in this country, the report estimates that at least 25 percent of those are illegal immigrants. The figure could be as high as 50 percent.
The same report says, “many illegal aliens harbor fatal diseases that American medicine fought and vanquished long ago, such as drug-resistant tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy, plague, polio, dengue, and Chagas disease.”
Where is your compassion for LEGAL U.S. citizens who are suffering or have suffered losses due to illegal aliens?
Lurking Mod,
Thanks for pointing out my website was jacked up; it is wilsonizer.blogspot.com, and I corrected it on the reply form.
In all honesty, I lean a tad to the conservative side on foreign policy issues, center left on social issues.
I started reading this blog a few months ago when it played a large role in the Lamont/Lieberman contest ( I am military, and I am still a registered voter in that fine state). I don’t subscribe to the politics most of the time, although I enjoy reading what people have to say.
Like I wrote in my original comment, I believe that people who comment on political blogs, left and right, post some pretty thoughtless, intolerant, and at time outright hateful stuff.
I thoroughly enjoy blogs and how they are transforming social/political discourse (that’s why I started my own, albeit I let it fall into disrepair due to a hectic work schedule); what I DO NOT like is the hate people spew in the name of political allegiance or background.
And by the way, I am an equal opportunity black and tan drinker; as long as no one raises their voice in anger, and the bartender knows how to make a REAL black and tan, I will drink with anyone and argue passionately about anything!!
Bob W @ 178
In general this post was an invitation to open the “ridicule gates” while observing the racist/hateful waters rise all around us.
Some of your comment has some merit but then again on occasion so does Senator Joe Lieberman.
Sounds nice but in mixed company sometimes you have to taste a coors.
(note: I wrote this before reading you are a CT constituent)
Bob W @ 178
I don’t find that too much of a stretch. As ET mentioned earlier, no one’s getting upset about all those Russian and East European immigrants coming here. I see far more of them up where I live, too.
I’m sympathetic to the idea that “racist” is a word that’s used too easily in this country. There are many words that are used too easily in this country, like “welfare queen” and “
Bob W., let me introduce you to a tool called Google. You can go there and look things up. For instance, if I wanted to find out how many times someone has posted a comment here under the identity “Bob W.”, I’d do this:
http://www.google.com/search?q…..oglake.com “Bob W.”
[don’t click on the link. It won’t work. Cut and paste it into your browser’s URL box]
and I’d find that you hadn’t posted anything prior to today. Let’s try that for the commenter who wrote that thing about “killing Christians” (not that any reasonable person would think that is what he/she was advocating, but whatever):
http://www.google.com/search?q…..oglake.com “Thomas Ware”
First, we’d find that he has posted here twelve times. In contrast, there are hundreds of entries for YT. Second, we’d find that he has a somewhat droll sense of humor.
Checking the thread in question, we’d notice that he posted that comment long after most folks had moved onto the next thread (among other things, you’d notice that because YT posted a comment leading to the next thread, the third such comment and, dare I say it, the first one to succeed in that aim).
What this would tell any reasonable person is that he doesn’t represent an existential threat to Christians or anyone else, and he’s not a regular in any event.
Sounds like more bad humor to me. If it’s serious, then yes, it’s somewhat offensive. So what? Are others joining in the chorus? Is there some sort of consensus I’m not perceiving there?
Yes, select a few comments from any blog and you’ll get an eyeful. Are we somehow obligated to argue with every crackpot or every person whose sense of humor I consider inappropriate? I don’t think so, personally. People are free to comment here, and if they do it within the rules their comments stay up.

Don’t worry, Brad. We’ll know that somehow, you’ll find a way to base your semi-literacy on all those Scary Brown People. Booga Booga! And Happy Holidays!

You mean besides implying that vast numbers of them are part of a Mexican conspiracy to take back the Southwest, and who don’t want to learn english (which, BTW, is something that could have been, and was, said about the Irish and Italian immigrants I was referring to, you people need to read more)?
Yes, labeling people “illegal alien sympathizers” is such a reasoned argument. By the way, that’s the rhetorical fallacy of association, sometimes refered to as “labeling”. So far, you haven’t shown me any ability to critique someone else’s logic.
Imagine my shock, more ad hominem. Where’s the reason? Where’s the logic? You wouldn’t know the truth if it walked up to you, kicked you in the crotch, and said “Let me introduce myself. I’m the truth.”
Cujo359 @ 187
Cujo,
Cujo,
thanks for the commentary back at me!
My point is that parachutec should not be shocked, shocked that there are wingnuts spewing intolerant, thoughtless speech in postings; scroll a few comments down on whatever someone has posted on a political blog (liberal, conservative it does not matter), and you will see someone on the left, however droll, spewing the same kind of off color tripe.
No, I don’t think anyone should waste time arguing with a mind that’s snapped shut (or absent altogether); I just find it unfortunate that blogs/internet have given us the opportunity to communicate more effectively than ever before, to share/argue important ideas; and a big hunk of society retreats in to ad hominem attacks and rhetoric rather than advancing their ideas through constructive argument/debate. . .
Actually, argument be damned, I just relish the black and tans, to be honest!

Evidently a widespread phenomenon, e.
I worked a summer job at a large manufacturing concern that is 1/3 latino, 1/3 black and 1/3 white. I didn’t meet a single African-American that approved of illegal immigrants (and the plant had plenty).
At a Democratic regional party this spring, a representative from each district was called to make a brief statement regarding the needs of local citizens. One African-American gentleman railed against illegal immigrants.
“I think we’re going to face the ugly fact that the next time we have a Democrat in the White House there is going to be a rash of right-wing terror attacks.” (Cliff Varnell, 11:14 a.m. post).
Sorry, Cliff, we’re already seeing a rash of right-wing terror attacks inside the United States.
Exactly how many terrorist mailings involving powder sent in envelopes have occurred since the real anthrax was mailed in envelopes shortly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001?
Alberto Gonzales knows. The Justice Department knows. But they are keeping this information under wraps. Classified. Just like the Bush administration was downplaying the number and severity of attacks occurring in Iraq. What are they hiding? What are they afraid of U.S. citizens learning?
Five years ago in December 2001, I saw a CNN news blurb scrolling across at the bottom of the CNN screen which stated that the Justice Department was conducting 15,000 investigations into terrorist mailings. I was impressed…and shocked. However, this is the only time in the past five years that I’ve seen anyone mention how many investigations into terrorist mailings have occurred.
Could it be because 99 percent of the terrorist mailings have targetted Democrats and other “liberals” in our democracy? Planned Parenthood? Family planning clinics? Abortion doctors? “Liberals” in Hollywood? Democrats in Congress?
Is this why Gonzales and his Justice Department are keeping hidden the number of terrorist attacks involving powder being mailed in envelopes to patriotic, freedom-loving U.S. citizens?
Hopefully, incoming Democrats in Congress will conduct a thorough investigation into what Gonzales’ Justice Department has been hiding from us, with this Republican coverup of the number of terrorist mailings being just one of them.
Cujo359 @ 189
Mecha, Maldef, La Raza, Lulac and more and not tiny, rare extremists groups. These are very large organizations with millions of supporters and members and hundreds of huge financial backers donating millions of dollars to their cause. This is easily verified.
I am called racist because I want our laws enforced and obeyed, while “la raza” means THE RACE. Mecha’s slogan is, FOR THE RACE, EVERYTHING. FOR THOSE OUTSIDE THE RACE, NOTHING.”
You’re being repetitve. I wasn’t trying to invoke an argument with this statement, but simply stating a fact. Are you not sympathetic to illegal aliens?
I haven’t seen any “logic” to critique.
Is “more ad hominem” your blanket reaction?
I thought I was quite clear. I see no valid standpoints, only screaming “racist” and “wingnuts” at those who are anti-illegal. That seems to be the norm for anti-illegal sympathizers. btw, anti-illegal IS NOT anti-immigrant.
As a matter of fact, I do know the truth. It has kicked me in the crotch. I see it firsthand everyday. This invasion is not a pretty site. You will be seeing that for yourself very soon, I imagine.
correction–in the next to last paragraph of my last post, I meant to say illegal alien sympathizers, not anti-illegal sympathizers (as they’re non-existent).
I want to be very clear with my labeling. ;)

So you people consider yourselves rational? What a hoot! You come out of the gate calling us racists and Nazis and you can’t handle the reaction you get when we respond? What do you expect? We who support the ICE raids are patriots who want the United States to continue to be the great country it has been and will not continue to be if we don’t stem the illegal alien INVASION. Yes it is an invasion. Yes La Raza is racist. Yes Mecha is racist. Yes there are many “pro-Hispanic” groups out there which are clearly racist. There is a “brown agenda” to inflitrate this country and then they will open the flood gates of our borders to millions and millions of more illegal aliens. That is what you people here seem to want and it boggles my mind why you would want such a thing that the founding fathers clearly wanted to guard against.
You wish to ban people you label hateful but you have been hateful yourselves from the very beginning by labeling us “wing nuts”. We are very angry Americans and this kind of blather makes us only angrier and will serve to lead to spilled blood on our soil over this issue. Your screeching, emotional debate only oils the gears of hate.
There is a place where people can be compassionate about the innoncent children victims of the ICE raids without resorting to calling ICE a bunch of Nazis and the detention center a concentration camp. But you all have not found that place and thus you get this angry response to your leftist hateful rhetoric.
I feel sorry for the children of illegal aliens who are only pawns to their parents.. a ticket to citizenship. Then they drag them out and try to get sympathy when it suits them. The children are victims of their parents’ selfishness only.
Zorro—you’ve more than made your point and your blogsturbation needs to end…NOW.
Take it someplace where your screeds will be appreciated.
To all those who support these round-ups:
I’m willing to make a deal. I’ll support the detention of these illegal alien workers and their families (of whom many of the children are US citizens) if you agree:
the owners of the factories (and their families) that hired these people are interned in the same facilities.
the stockholders of these companies (and their families) are interned in the same facilities.
the consumers (and their families) of the products these factories produce are interned in the same facilities.
Deal?

I don’t think I have read anything more hateful than this comment on this blog, ever. Please take a deep breath and a long look in the mirror. What are you really afraid of? (it’s not illegal workers) Quit trying to out hate everyone, have a cookie or some hot chocolate.
Stop lumping criminal acts like murder into the same charge as illegal immigration. It sounds like the worst kind of bigotry ( I am trying to allow for room that you may be able to consider this)
Hold your republican congresscritters accountable.
Clean up your own party.
You don’t get the common ground. Corporations with the support of government are playing both sides of this coin while cleaning up at all our expense.
Only fair treatment of all labor, while they are you know, working in the US, should be acceptable.
The very idea that keeping children (of illegal workers) with their families while in our country has to be defended is just nuts. We are better than that or at least we can be better than that.
Holding people in indefinate detention without a hearing is absolutely inhumane and unacceptable.
Threating violence (a definative act of wingnuttery, imo) belittles every result you hope for.
It’s about how we treat fellow human beings, citizens or not.
There is another way.
good bye
Prince Roy:
I do agree with you that the management of companies/corporations should pay a heavy price every time they are caught employing illegal aliens.
1. Businesses caught employing illegals should have to pay a heavy fine that acts as a deterrent to other corporations that consider doing the same thing.
2. They should be required to pay for all court costs and legal fees involving the illegal aliens they employed.
3. These businesses should be required to pay their former employees all the funds and provide the benefits that they would have received for labnor provided, had they not been in an illegal status.
4. Perhaps management should face jail time as well? I personally think excessive fines are enough to modify corporate behavior, though.
5. Beyond fines, these businesses should pay into funds that enable the county/state to develop jobs programs and enhance the social services of the area where the business is located (which are most likely overburdened because the illegal immigrants employed by the business often don’t pay into the system).
I guarantee that if the INS and the law focused on the employer, and made it more difficult to hire illegal immigrants in the first place, and extremely painful to be caught hiring undocumented workers, immigration would cease to be a divisive national issue in this country.
I currently live in Cumberland County, NC, and the counties around this one have unemployment above the national average. If there was an INS raid on one of the Hog farms, Chicken Processing plants, or the like that are major employers in the area, I have no doubt that there would be no shortage of legal citizens to take over on the assembly line.
No racism or ethnocentrism here, my friends. I just don’t believe it’s fair to American citizens, and people who went through the hassle of becoming naturalized or obtaining a worker visa, to have their livelihoods jeopardized by this system of employing illegal immigrants, and
paying them at levels that people with legal status cannot compete with.
It is exploitative for everyone involved, EXCEPT for the Business owners.
Sure, reform the system, make it easier to get a legal status to work here, and have sypathy for the exploited undocumented workers and their families. But the American middle class suffers from our broken immigration system as much as anyone else.
Target the employers of illegal immigrants, make it painful to hire illegals, and reform the system so it is easier for people to get worker visas, and this will be a huge step in alleviating the problems being faced by towns and counties across the country.
