Murray Waas has a piece up at HuffPo, that is a follow-up from some e-mails that were posted earlier in the week by the folks at Wonkette. Suffice it to say that the whole situation is a bit weird -- especially the part about the Wag Time Pet Spa and the (literal!) alleged flinging of poo -- and I'm feeling the need for some sort of Venn diagram to keep track of the whole thing.
Mercifully, John Amato at Crooks and Liars has put together some links on the whole mess. And, bless him, eRiposte has laid out the portion of this ongoing saga that may -- or may not -- include his work on the aluminum tubes on The Left Coaster.
Now, I enjoy a mystery and some speculation as much as the next person. But I've also spent a lot of time talking with and e-mailing back and forth with Murray Waas about the Fitzgerald investigation -- because, well, as you know, it's been a bit of an obsession of mine to follow that case along its investigative trajectory -- and I can personally attest to the fact that Murray is a walking encyclopedia on that case.
When we were at YearlyKos last summer, the Plame panel got together the night before our presentation to hash out who among us was planning to talk about what aspect of the case and the media coverage (or lack thereof, as the case might be), as well as the aspects of media and governmental participation that might be involved. As you might expect, I got to be the "legal" discussion portion -- no shocker there -- but we all sat around for at least a half an hour as Emptywheel and Murray traded tangential factoids about this or that aspect of the case. Without notes. And without interruption.
(Nothing like a couple of bottles of wine, a fine cigar or two -- smoked by Amb. Wilson and Larry Johnson, mind you, not me -- and a couple of hours of rampant Plameology discussion for a good time, I always say. But I digress...)
All this to say, anyone who tries to intimate that Murray is a slacker about his work is a moron. And hasn't spoken to Murray about those issues into which he has dug -- and deeply -- for his articles. His work on the Plame case alone has been brilliant and immensely helpful for those of us who have been digging through the public record trying to read the tea leaves between the spin. (Don't take my word for it, read Jay Rosen's take.)
Whatever comes of this article that is apparently coming out about Murray -- I agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment that he expresses at the end of his HuffPo piece:
It is from the wellspring of our despair and the places that we are broken that we come to repair the world.
Amen to that one, Murray.
Look, no human being is perfect -- that includes me, and Jane, and Murray, and whomever else that you may read or be represented by or whatever in the public sphere. You do the best that you can with the information that you have and, when you have better information, you do better. That is true for reporting, for analysis and, frankly, for life off the page as well.
I honestly have no way of knowing what is or is not in this article, or how far back or how deeply it delves into Murray's life -- both professionally or personally -- or what these people may or may not have tried to dig up. What I do know, from years and years of working in the criminal justice system, is that everyone -- and I do mean EVERYONE -- has skeletons that they would never want to see the light of day, and that if you dig around long enough and with enough of a purpose, you can twist anything to the point that it looks bad for the person against whom you hope to use it.
This may or may not turn out to be a tempest in a teapot. But I wanted to be on record as saying that every contact that I have ever had with Murray has been very professional, that he has assiduously protected his sources when we have talked about matters on which he was reporting (even wheedling did me no good -- nor did the promise of homemade meals...darn it all!), and that he is one of the hardest working people that I have ever seen as he doggedly pursues leads on stories.

I know this is a bit in the weeds in terms of bloggy side issues, gang. But this whole mess is pissing me off and I felt the need to vent. SIGH
Hope all of our readers who are headed out across the country this weekend have a safe journey and a very happy holiday. :)

Ah…Minds that think alike at the same time!
LOL. Yes, it was very entertaining, and dizzying. Then the voice of reason, Dan Froomkin, says, “Um, we’re not going to get into this level of detail tomorrow, are we?”
Dan has that knack for sensing the audience, and I guess, knows the value of a helpful editor. Heh.
Hmmm…any chance the timing on this is related to the upcoming Scooter trial? Trying to smear one of the leading reporters on the case would fit their M.O.
Murray Waas has been hassled lately because he’s a cancer survivor!

Warning to the chuckleheads at wonkette.
Don’t. Piss. Christy. Off.
back on topic,
Murray is going to be very busy next month. Along with Christy, M.T. Wheeler, Jane, LHP, Mary, etc, etc.
FITZ!, Happy birthday, dude.
Busted at 10 — actually, I think Wonkette did a great job publishing what they had. They aren’t the ones that are at the bottom of this mess.
And I meant to link up a Jay Rosen piece above as well — sorry.
Christy,
It does no harm to inform folks not to piss you off.
I’ve seen it, it aint pretty.
Lmao.
Now to go read your link.
PS, You are right , of course. It seems to be someone elses agenda.
Let’s remember that the Scaife acolytes have had it in for Murray since he exposed the Arkansas Project to drum up false witnesses against Clinton. The Libby thing just puts him back in the crosshairs, and it’s now just before the trial. I don’t believe they’ve been holding this attack for so long out of a desire to check facts. This has been brewing and rumored to be coming out since at least before YearlyKos, when I first heard about it: from Murray.
I’ll be very dubious of sources about Murray’s personal life.
Must admit I don’t get this one–Oh well.
OT - not that it was a tough call, but Rahm gets it right (via atrios):

Sick, bitter and un-American, every last one of them.

Looks like the whole middle east is on slow boil again. The UN is set to pass some sanctions on Iran and Iran is threatening to retaliate. Also, the neighbor to Irans north has just lost their longtime leader at such a convenient time…..I imagine the CIA will running amok in Turkmenistan any day now.

Twisted Martini @ 20
Lame duck’s just another word for nothing left to lose to these guys.
twolf1 @ 23
Cue laugh track.
The State of the Union address will be more interesting for the tone of the commentators than for what ol Clusterfuck actually says..
They now know that only idiots and ass sniffin White House staffers say nice things about ol Clusterfuck now- so there could be a blood letting of historic proportions.
Since the election, I have searched in vain for a defense of Ol Clusterfuck by any person associated with the press. Haven’t found one yet…The sheeple have moved off in another direction!!
Season’s greetings, everyone - I hope that those of you who are or will be traveling over the holidays will have safe trips and that you’ll have very enjoyable holidays.
Ol Clusterfuck will be tellin Nancy the Pelose- about how he’s fucked up the state of the union- on TEEVEE…Lookin forward to it…
Hope she gives him the finger!
Here is a wonderful sentence penned by James Wolcott that might be applicable to the attack on Waas as a cancer survivor: “That is so far over the line that you can’t even see the line from where the words landed.”
A food fight would be the most accurate representation of the state of the union that I can imagine—”INCOMING!”
Christy - in the first paragraph of your post, are you referring to a Venn diagram? I remember Venn diagrams (from set theory) in some of my college mathematics courses.

“Ms. Speaker, ladies and gentlemen of the 110th Congress, honored guests, and my fellow Americans…
We are so fucked.
Thank you, and God bless America.”
Quick note: “ven” -> “Venn”.
Murray’s the bomb.
I usually enjoy reading any article by Murray Waas. His Huffpo essay was a hard read, though, as he’s stil not sure when this hit piece is going to come out on him, and what it is going to center on. But his take on cancer survivors and focus on Lance Armstrong is accurate.
My son’s band starts playing in public again tonight after 15 months reshaping their material and sound. The guy who is becoming their manager is a 17-yo who is a leukemia survivor. The band loves him, but watching his interactions with some of the kids who stop by to listen is sometimes strange. It is almost as if the other kids who know what he’s been through are afraid to get too close to him - it might rub off or something. Bizarre…
The evildoers have learned that they get a big reaction when they disturb the flow of petroleum to the Godly. The Godly HATE bein cold.
John Venn. He invented it. Capital V e n n.
I think we’ll be happy to have Murray’s back on this. When I first heard it was coming, my thought was “Geez, the man used to cover organized crime, I have to imagine the news of a ‘hit piece’ would get quite a chuckle.”
Yes, got it. Typo on Venn. Will fix it.
I remember getting off the elevator at Yearly Kos and walking smack into the Plame panel gathered ’round a bar in the casino. Truly a surreal moment.
Murray struck me as one of the sweetest people I have ever encountered, and reading his piece on HuffPo left me with a basic question - why?
Why are they coming after him? Who do they think will care? It’s almost laughable. Truly a bizarre story. Don’t worry Murray, whatever you’ve done, I’m sure I can top it!
rape charges against duke lacrosse players have been dropped

no, they can still milk it because kidnapping and sexual offense charges still stand
rwcole @ 42
Agree.
I started to read about this and got completely lost.
I think if Murray has been a reporter since he was 18, he should be able to protect himself in the clinches.
Bizzare stuff.
twolf
Thank God!
Pachacutec @ 13
This sounds about as likely as any scenario. I don’t really understand folks like this (and like most of us I have known a few) What benefit does this maneuver bring forth? Bringing attention to Murray in any form will just bring more attention to the story he’s been working on. I don’t get it at all.
Unless the hit machine is just out of work and trying to collect a paycheck through the holidays.
rwcole @ 48
Yeah, if not for that, the only story we would ever hear about would be the RosieO’DonaldTrump ‘feud’
Sounds like the Washington City Pages needs to be cleaned up. The reporters involved in this story violated every journalistic code of conduct in Fairness and Accuracy in the Media (FAIM) and Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR). Not to speak of common human decency. Shame on them.
There is something to be said for the rotten ecosystem that forms certain precincts of Washington DC, and that seems to infect many politicians and journalists who work there.
Another heart warming Christmas Story- LA Times:
“During Goldman’s (mayor) watch the city (Las Vegas) has tried what some say are among the country’s harshest tactics against the homeless- including a short lived city ordinance that out lawed feeding them in the parks, A ban on sleeping within 500 feet of feces was repealed in September….”
Merry Christmas
rwcole at 42 — one of the reporters writing the story about Murray has a wife that apparently did the poo flinging. But “poo flinging” seemed like such a perfect descriptive image for the whole of this idiotic mess, that I couldn’t resist throwing it in…
Mayor Goldman says:
“Leave yer money at the casinos and then get the fuck out of our town!”

Ah!! It becomes clear!!!
Stars and Stripes is reporting today that the Pentagon has come up with a new set of rules allowing previously deployed troops suffering from PTSD to be re-deployed - if they’re in “remission.” Sheesh!
servicemembers with “a psychiatric disorder in remission, or whose residual symptoms do not impair duty performance” may be considered for duty downrange. It lists post-traumatic stress disorder as a “treatable” problem.
That decision is left to mental health professionals, under the guidelines. If troops do not improve after three months of therapy and medication, the guidance prohibits their deployment.
http://www.stripes.com/article.....icle=42349
Biodun at 50 — it’s even more bizarre when you consider that Murray is not even remotely close to the sort of “celebrity journalist” that one would think would merit this sort of scrutiny. Normally, there’s a sort of unofficial detente between reporters — “I won’t launch my personal information missiles at you, if you don’t launch yours at me.” sort of thing. What this does is open a huge can of worms on the whole reporting on reporters’ lives that most of the Beltway crowd would not, I should think, want opened.
Truly, this whole thing is so weird.
I can’t think of a more brilliant way to bring PTSD remission to an end than with a nice trip back into a free fire zone.
Nice work.

Redd– the poo flingin is actually my favorite part–but I was hopin that she was flingin her OWN poo- not that of some innocent puppy dog.
If ya let the sick stay home- soon only the healthy will get killed in Iraq.
So I read Waas’ blog post regarding this and I have to wonder how righteously pissed he is. There are tons of formating errors and typos, which I generally attribute to the fiery anger burning through someone who has been totally harrassed by cretinous assholes.
The jacklegs that wrote the article about him deserve to be drummed out of their professions. But given that their profession is already in the gutter, I don’t see why their peers will even bother to notice.
chimpy actually visited Walter Reed hospital. i wonder if he actually saw any wounded troops?
rwcole @ 52
Good. People should be allowed to sleep next to sh!t if they want to.
I have not followed this. I don’t understand, why do cancer survivors need to tell us anything, unless they want to?
If Murray Waas is fair game then so are ALL reporters, editors, publishers, and broadcast executives. Do they really want to go down that road?
This thread has officially become the poo thread, I guess:
rwcole @ 52

The law was repealed so that Laura could sleep next to George on their next visit to town. Last time they made her sleep 550 feet away from W.
re chimp @ walter reed - news said he “handed out medals and attended a gift wrapping event… then took off for camp david”
Alice at 64 — that was pretty much the question that I’ve been asking myself as I’ve been reading through everything on this. If the detente on reporting personal life information on reporters is off in Washington…well, that’s an awful lot of stuff that could potentially be exposed to sunlight. And I’m not certain that anyone really wants to start lifting up those rocks…not in the Beltway Crowd anyway — that’s always been the standard, and to change that now is bizarre. The timing is odd. The level of personal vendetta and invective involved is odd. The whole thing is very, very unusual — and I, for one, would like to know why they are pressing it this hard because Murray isn’t exactly a household name in terms of “celebrity” or anything — it’s not as though doing a report on him is going to make papers fly off the shelves or anything. If it’s not a profit motive, what is it? THAT is a question I’d like to see answered.
Ed*ard at 70 — you made me spew my coffee. *g*
“gift wrapping event”
Yeah a holiday tradition
wounded vets wrap their amputated limbs and present em to one another- so a guy who lost a leg gets and arm- etc. it’s a barrel of laughs and I’m sure Clusterfuck got a big bang out of it.
poo flinging
Christy Hardin Smith @ 57
Yep. There’s a code of omerta among DC journos about open secrets of personal lives that everyone more or less shares in incestuous DC. So the whole story hasn’t been told yet.
Pach @ 13 might be on to something about the Scaife angle.
Pachacutec @

My thoughts precisely. Plus the hospital he sued and their law firm might be trying to get some of their own back, although this just puts something on the record they would be better off keeping quiet.
Want to know why we have a rotten news media? Watch what is happening to Murray Waas. In a just world his byline would appear front page above the fold in the NYT, USA Today or some other national publication.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 72
the only thing I can think of is justice by example. Report the news and you will be smeared.
Has Waas written a book? Can he be invited to Sunday night book salon? Is there something we can do for him other than link love?
Christy Hardin Smith @

Sorry, Redd. When stating the obvious, sometimes issuing a spew alert slips my mind. Send the bill to my computer cleaner guy.
Predictions anyone? Tweety will be the first to mention this story on the tele.
From what I understand this seems to be less of a grand conspiracy than a petty personal vendetta. The editor of Washington City Paper seems to have a history of using “his” paper as an instrument of personal revenge. His wife is the poo-flinger in question.
Not sure why they are doing a piece on Waas but it looks like things got way out of hand.
I justed popped in for a quick dip and saw this tale of stalking. It seems to me that Murray may a ahve few tort claims avaibale to him.
Please note: I do not have all the facts and evidence and am not saying that a prosecutable civil cases exists. Just that there are some torts that should be considered to see if enough evidence exists to support a case.
1) harrassmnet
2) defamation
3) invasion of privacy (depending on the state)
4) intentional infliction of emotional harm
5) some states also have anti-stalking laws
I talked to Mr. Waas briefly at YK and he seemed like a very bright, very energetic guy. Down to earth as well. I came away feeling that he wouldn’t lie to puff up himself or a piece and he really loves what he does. Go Murray!
PS, Funny how the “celebrities” were approachable, funny and wonderful. It was the 3 or 4 assistant-celebriteies that were too weird.
new thread
DaveS at 81 got to it before me, but that was what I took away from reading Murray’s Huff post piece. He wasn’t explicit & didn’t give any details but apparently there is some history of a perceived slight or similar from the editor’s wife’s best friend & Murray. Talk about convoluted getting even. Very high school.
As I understood it, the main reason Murray even wrote the Huff piece is that he’s pissed about the derogatory comments made by the writer about cancer survivors in general. I think he also said that because the correspondence was made public on Wonkette he wanted to respond.
wow, I couldn’t even make it through all of that post at Huffpo without having the name Rove hammering inside my head. I’m not especially familiar with Murray but he seems like a good guy and I’ve always respected all of his work. I’m sure the truth will beat back the idiots eventually, but it’s a needless ordeal in the meantime. Hang in there Murray and know we’re hanging in there with you.

don’t think so… Tweety doesn’t usually take time to introduce a back story… don’t think Tweety’s audience knows Murray
wish that were not so, but Tweety was caught up in Abramoff scams (Matthews was to host an event…) so I don’t think he’s careful about details… Tweety likes big bands, big guns, big codpieces… would not give his producers the time to introduce him to Waas…
Interesting to see how much y’all sound like a bunch of freepers, leaping to defend your hero before you know what the article in question says about him. Or how and why it came to be written.
Attacking Waas because he’s a cancer survivor? How plausible does that sound?
Maybe it’d be a good idea to await the actual story Waas appears to be trying to pre-empt before taking sides?
