Professional codpiece Ollie North was yucking it up on Fox news the other day on his Good Time War tour of Iraq, using live soldiers for props and verily scoffing at the notion of danger. Says Ollie (via Will Bunch):
I'm standing next to Lance Corporal Andrew Colon. Earlier today, we went with the Marines of 1-6, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, into Ramadi to look at a civil affairs project. Andrew Colon is a combat correspondent with the civil affairs group that is responsible for winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people. It was interesting yesterday, because while we were out there, Iraqi troops — some character who apparently had been trained by the French, perhaps the French Girl Scouts or by one of your friends, Alan — took a pot shot at us. The outcome might have been different if he'd been trained to shoot by Dick Cheney, but he missed.
Ha ha. You teh funny, Ollie. Zingers about man's man Dick Cheney, liberals and the French in one shot to prove you laugh in the face of danger.
But Ollie left something out:
Just six days before North giggled on camera about "potshots," and boasted that things were really improving in Iraq, a high-ranking Marine officer and two other U.S. soldiers who had just escorted North and his Fox crew to Ramadi moments earlier were killed by a roadside bomb. The Marine who died in the Dec. 6 blast was Maj. Megan McClung, the highest-ranking woman killed in Iraq since the invasion in March 2003.
I don't know when these ghouls like Malkin will stop putting American troops in danger so they can do their self-promoting, vanity globe trotting through war zones and get their wingnut welfare checks for spreading lies about all the "good news" in Iraq to the lizard brains. Their callous indifference to the safety of those who have to put their lives in danger so they can spread the BushCo delusion about how groovy everything is in Iraq and flatter themselves as they strut before the camera is downright venal.

Celebrity? Why I’m not even qualified for a lousy reality show made up of washed up never was’s.
It isn’t just North and Malkin. I was reading an article about Major McClung yesterday which described what she had been doing earlier that week and that day. She was no more or less brave than other Marines. Maybe she knew little about North beforehand, maybe she knew a lot. Maybe she thought he was an officious prick. But she probably did a little extra if she could for North, because he was an ex-Marine.
North is a treacherous sllimeball, but as long as the toops are there, the reasons they die while doing their jobs will all be ridiculous.
FoxNews, it’s reprehensible 24/7, beautiful post Jane.
The outcome might have been different if he’d been trained to shoot by Dick Cheney
Five Deferment Dick should NEVER be mentioned in association with military training.

I LOVE the way the neo cons are trotting out olver north like he’s some kind of patriot, like he was some kind of fall guy in Iran contra
he was NOT the fall guy, he WAS the guy
I am truly under the impression president Reagan new nothing about what was being done behind his back by olie and the current president’s father…reagan was already exhibiting the serious stages of altimers
when he told us publicly he knew nothing about what oliver north did to America, president Reagan wasn’t lying
on the congressional record, when Reagan was being deposed the disease had already ravished the presidents mind, he could only remember meetings and events that happened long ago, he knew nothing of the Iran contra affair
he himself said he takes the blame for it anyway, he was the president and he took the blame for what was done on his watch
while I surely didn’t think his policies were sound, I give some kind of respect to someone that understands when mistakes are made under their watch the the blame lands on themselves regardless of capacity
however, as he testified, he really knew nothing about it
I believe what north did was without the president’s approval and behind his back, and every FUH RICKING person that took advantage of president Reagan’s disease, at this nations peril, is a friggin TRAITOR, and oliver north is a traitor in my book
for the most part, this stage of the Reagan presidency, Bush number one was already the president, and Reagan was not responsible for the crimes against America
oliver north personally took money from Saudi Arabia, in his own words he did it and he did it in direct defiance of congressional order to finance and fund a war, something congress already said no to
oliver north disobeyed direct orders, traded arms for drugs, sold the drugs, funded terrorists which begot AL qaeda
he lied to congress, he was convicted of disobeying congress and lying to congress, his conviction was overturned because the evidence was then “immunized”
in order to keep the administration from being impeached, the testimony was “immunized” and on appeal oliver north’s appeal the evidence couldn’t be presented
he was pre pardoned from further prosecution so there would be no case brought before the public
that plan of taking money from Saudi Arabia and selling arms to terrorists is responsible for the terrorism we are fighting today and we are paying the price for it right now…while he might have never met the man personally, if you want someone to blame for osama bin laden you can look directly in the eyes of of oliver north
the soviet union went bankrupt fighting terrorism and we are on pretty much the same path now
a soldier is NOT allowed to follow orders that contradict congress, they are NOT allowed to lie to congress
this is NO fall guy, and what he did to this country, what he did to his president, is beyond words, it’s despicable our children die today for what this man did

In an article about the neocons attempts to instigate further war in Syria, I just saw the most amazing quote from Meyrav Wurmser. It fits in rather well here:
Time to rack up those last paychecks off living flesh of various nationalities, ’cause this bird has flown!
I found this here, a bundle of two articles at truthout, both of which should also go into the Elliott Abrams file. The second article is of interest not only for what it says, but also for the fact that it ran in TIME.

That time he actually seemed to answer the question he was being asked. Keep in mind that professional polling is a science…Dubya’s more inclined to believe the opposite of what science has to say on just about any topic. Looks like watertiger and I use the exact same French-English dictionary.
Of course, talk of “credibility” exposes the fingerprints of Henry Kissinger on the Chucklehead’s latest lunacies. Brad DeLong (I’m dying here trying to load his page through my congested comcast line) had the ultimate verdict on this kind of nonsense in a version for game-theorists among us. Or in more simply, If you have to look that hard before you can parse out a justification for doing something as momentous and awful as continue a war, then you’re dealing in bullshit.

I wanted to reach through the tube and shake the hell out of Scarborough for his idiot “what do we do? what do we do? He’s one of many that enabled the unitary executive mindset and precedent over the past 5 years.
This is the first that I can remember seeing the panic felt for the world’s future that I felt when I first found the PNAC site in 2002. Now, that panic seems to be evenly spread over guests of all parties.
It’s weird to see a segment on Scarborough of Bush openly contradicting himself and the enablers smug with their discovery….The Daily Show did it years ago but none of the Cons would listen, admit it or appear to consider the possibility.
I’m even more fired up now about North’s arrogant inconsideration. It’s the same MSM and think-tank thugs that helped absolve Iran/Contras from accountability and North in particular. In the memory and honor of the good people lost, we can’t let the govt criminals slink into the shadows again.
Thanks for this post Jane.

From what’s been reported, by men and women who knew her, Major McClung was an exemplary Marine Officer, a wonderful person and a fine athlete. Her loss is unnecessary, unjustified and unconscionable. We cannot continue to needlessly sacrifice extraordinary Americans such as her at the altar of George Bush’s mindless stupidity.

CPT Travis Patriquin’s slideshow is a must read. Thanks, Scarecrow.
What mortifies me is the thousands who die sent by a man not worth a 1000th of one of them.
The Army Captain killed with Maj. Megan McClung was Capt. Travis Patriquin. He is the guy who created this slide show which is being widely distributed throughout the Army and Marine Corps in Iraq. It tells how to win the war in Iraq and is worth seeing by all of us. It is a .pdf file with 38 slides. McClung and Patriquin were very likely targetted because of the slide show.

Common background, gives a real family feeling and is displayed by a common language and set of attitudes. The President is the CiC and is strongly respected just for that reason.
I’m retired Army, and there are no people I feel as comfortable with as other military or ex-military. But I’ve got a split personality. My parents were Texas Liberals and Democrats, and my mother hated the military – she had a hard time with that because over half the males in the family were in WW II.
A good friend of mine from the Vietnam era was a career regular officer for two tours flying choppers. He knew the war was the wrong one, but his cynical line was “It’s a shitty war, but I’m career Army and it’s the only one I got.”
You can either be cynical in that position, or you can simply decide that your life is already determined so you accept what is happening with totally positive attitude. My unscientific obseration is that the combat arms guys took the totally positive attitude, and we support people were the cynics. The cynics usually failed to get promoted.
I dunno if this is correct, but it seems to be what I have observed. I’m one of the cynics. Iraq was and is the wrong war, but I rather regret that I am too old to be over there with my people. As far as I can tell, there is nothing in civilian life worth belonging to as much as the Army is.
Does that give you any idea of what is going on?
This picture of Maj. Megan McClung haunts me.
Last Thursday I was at the CA Capitol for a Hanukkah lighting ceremony (yes a day early) and the flag was flying at half mast for McClung. All of the speakers, including Arnold mentioned praying for the soldiers, but not one of them talked about the lowered flag above them. Why they did not connect the dots I do not know.
I wrote it up here.
TeddySanFran @ 80
Gee Dubaya’s daddy pardoned all those losers. Nothing wrong with the presinet dooing what ever he thinks is right, regardless of what laws he breaks. Funny in an ironic way isn’t it?
I by no means agree with everything in the original post. But I’ve been embedded thrice in al Anbar, twice through the auspices of Maj. Megan McClung. She truly was an exceptional woman. I also got to know Capt. Travis Patriquin, both a hero and a damned smart cookie. I’ve blogged repeatedly on both of them, most recently on McClung’s funeral that I attended in Arlington Cemetery.
I am therefore bewildered that Ollie North has made no mention of her other than that he met her and she poured him some coffee and helped with his crew’s gear. She died trying to help him; my God, doesn’t that deserve recognition? That said, before you start picking on neo-con North, bear in mind that McClung et al. had just dropped off the Fox crew and were actually escorting Newsweek reporters when their Humvee was destroyed. Seen any mention of McClung at all in Newsweek?
god dammit! This makes me mad.
Re North’s comment that “some character who apparently had been trained by the French, perhaps the French Girl Scouts or by one of your friends, Alan — took a pot shot at us. The outcome might have been different if he’d been trained to shoot by Dick Cheney, but he missed.”
If he’d bothered reading Thomas Ricks’ excellent book, “Fiasco,” he might have had a clue that the miss is often deliberate, with taking a shot being more a matter of restoring honor and “counting coup” in Iraqi culture than a serious attempt to actually kill someone. But that, of course, would not have played into North’s predetermined narrative that the enemy is hapless/incompetent/cowardly.
Mam @
91
This is where it helps to have actually gone to Iraq and have observed (and in my case, been involved in) the fighting. I never heard a thing about “counting coup.” That’s native Americans. Iraqis — on both sides of the war — are simply horrible shots. It’s been very vexing for our troops to get them to do anything but “spray and pray,” meaning pulling the trigger and just firing until all 30 rounds are gone. Conversely, the troops like that the insurgents suffer the same problem. So do I. A machine gun opened up on me from close range in Ramadi and I’m alive to tell the tale. If you’re wondering about snipers, some of those are quite good. I got video of one just barely missing a soldier on top of a roof. But they’re not Iraqis.
