Dan Froomkin has linked up a number of his columns from the past year, and they chronicle the shifting public perceptions — both in the electorate and also in the media — regarding the Bush Administration. It makes for quite a read. But it is Froomkin's description before the links that I found most compelling, and I wanted to share a little bit with you all:
The year 2006 started with President Bush firmly in denial about how terribly wrong his war in Iraq has gone. It ends that way, too.
But in between, something changed: Bush lost his parade.
Somehow, Bush had managed up until this year to lull voters — and seduce journalists — into complicity with a worldview that was simply not based in reality.
There's been plenty of evidence for years now that Bush was living in a self-imposed bubble of non-reality, particularly when it came to the situation in Iraq.
But it wasn't until Bob Woodward's book "State of Denial," came out in September that it was definitively established, to the full satisfaction of Washington's cocktail-party circles, that the president is not to be taken seriously on Iraq.
It wasn't until November, when the voters resoundingly threw Bush's congressional enablers from power, that it became undeniably clear that Americans reject Bush's leadership.
And Bush's response to this month's report from the bipartisan Iraq Study Group is making it manifestly obvious that, for all the White House's attempts to give the impression that Bush listens to people who disagree with him, he does not.
He appears to still listen pretty much only to two people — Vice President Cheney and political guru Karl Rove — even though both were proven catastrophically wrong in 2006.
And here we are. George Bush and his political cronies are doing whatever tap dance they feel is necessary to save what little political reputation he feels he can salvage as a "legacy." Meanwhile, the rest of us have to come to terms with the fact that he's ruined the nation's reputation for years to come.
Cleaning up after the parade is a bitch. I do not envy the Democratic members of Congress who will now have to wade through all of the oversight on war profiteering, misuse of intelligence, rampant cronyism, no-bid contracts, failure to enforce regulatory requirements, and on and on and on. But is is well past time that someone provided some check, some balance, some means of oversight that stands up for the public's interests. Is it January yet?

PS — We'd really appreciate it if Congress would keep working on net neutrality. Thanks much.

Redd: I do not envy the Democratic members of COngress who will now have to wade through all of the oversight on war profiteering, misuse of intelligence, rampant cronyism, no-bid contracts, failure to enforce regulatory requirements, and on and on and on.
Well, if they had done their job in the first place there would not be nearly so much of a mess to wade through.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President George W. Bush said on Wednesday that he supports a Democratic proposal to increase the U.S. minimum wage but said it should be coupled with tax and regulatory relief for small businesses.
“I believe we should do it in a way that does not punish the millions of small businesses that are creating most of the new jobs in our country,” Bush told a news conference. “So, I support pairing it with targeted tax and regulatory relief to help these small businesses stay competitive and to help keep our economy growing.”
Democrats, who took control of Congress in November elections, have said they will push to raise the minimum wage over two years to $7.25 per hour from $5.15 per hour
klyde — I think C&L has the video up already. Have you looked over there? Because I’m pretty sure I saw it this morning…
rw at 3 — it’s been worse. O.o
Shorter President Bush:
Redd- must’ve been on your mind when you picked the pic?
rw at 12 — actually, I was thinking about all those parades in which I marched as a kid in high school band. And how many times you have to plow straight through a pile of crap on the parade route that didn’t get properly cleaned up…and that pix just seemed so appropriate, I couldn’t help myself. *g*
Redd
Were you a trombone player?
nice, EPU, very nice bleak link.
rw — I was, actually. I also played baritone, depending on what was needed for marching season. Played flute and piccolo in concert season, and bass guitar (if you can believe it!) for our jazz band.
EPU — good one (although it seems odd to say good one for that particular link, I must say…but altogether too appropriate.)
Redd—-
Do you have any “one woman show” recordings you can share?
Is the rest of the populous supposed to be happy that the press is finally “catching up,” because they’re not. They still don’t write or show the daily demonstrations going on outside the White House or the Capitol. All day yesterday the viewing public was inundated with the potential demise of the future Ex Mrs. Trump, currently known as Miss USA. More attention is being given to, as sad as it may be, unprepared mountain climbers, than our troops dodging bullets. The government and the corporate owned press is still under the impression that the American public is stupid and are trying to keep us on a constant shopping trip. We shouldn’t be fooled by them throwing us an occasional Mia Culpa.
Tough to be a marching trombonist- they seem to always be looking up.
Shrub trying to drum up support for his surge/ratchet-up/escalate plan reminds of the scene in “Animal House” when the Belushi character, Bluto, yells out, “Come on! Let’s go! Who’s with me?” and begins to run out of the frat-house living room, hoping everyone will follow him. But no one else moves. They all just sit there silently.
Moon—Yeah- but go look for articles defending President Pig Farmer—pretty sparse aren’t they? A year ago they were commonplace.
CHS – This is actually the best song on the album, and also topical Teenagers
Teddy – Sorry, you prevented me from Kazuzing, and you can’t compliment your way out of the doghouse.

Today listening to the press conference I had an epiphany as to w’s where abouts during the time he was missing from the Texas Air National Guard. He wasn’t perched on a bar stool in Birmingham, Alabama as is commonly assumed; but rather, given the course of the last 6 years, he was in Manchuria.

According to staff in my Congresscritter’s office, there was at least one telecom lobbyist for every Congresscritter AND every staff member on Net Neutrality last summer (i.e., several thousand lobbyists solely on this issue). And the telecoms still want it.
The Internet is now deeply embedded into American daily life, business, and education. This is one issue on which evangelicals, realtors, insurance agents, teachers, and grandmas can all agree. Failing to support NN is political poison; it’s no longer a ‘bipartisan’ issue.

Mostly OT, but on an FDL issue of concern from Lamont v Lieberman:
Back on August 8th, Matt wrote a piece that listed many of the journalists who simply repeated the Lieberman camp’s assertion that their campaign went down as a result of “dirty tricks.”
Dec. 20 2006:
“The investigation has revealed no evidence the problems the Web site experienced were the result of criminal conduct,” said Tom Carson, spokesman for U.S. Attorney Kevin O’Connor.
State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal confirmed the joint investigation “found no evidence of tampering or sabotage warranting civil action by my office.” Both men declined to provide additional information, such as what might have happened to the site.
Calls to Lieberman went unanswered yesterday.

Woodward’s book was pivotal in getting mrEgregious to see how bad things were, altho previous to that he was unusually generous with allowing a lot of political donations.
After he finished the book I heard him say to a friend, “We don’t do things this way.” He was quiet but angry.
From Patrick 4/4 @43’s WSJ editorial,
“Certainly the MSM, such as it is, collapsed itself. It was once utterly dominant yet made itself vulnerable by playing on its reputed accuracy and disinterest to pursue adversarial agendas. Still, as far from perfect as that system was, it was and is not wholly imperfect. The technology of ink on paper is highly advanced, and has over centuries accumulated a major institutional culture that screens editorially for originality, expertise and seriousness.”
I, for one, would be less inclined to supplement my news diet with blogs if the MSM did their job. As for the snide comments about quality…..F*ck it, I can’t be bothered.

sure salon.com has its weaknesses, but they still feature Sidney Blumenthal regularly:
Here’s what President Hawg was actually quoted as saying when asked about the difference between his previous assertions that we were winning and his more recent pronouncement that we are not:
“Bush also explained a striking shift in position in the Washington Post interview.
He said his earlier comments were meant to say that, “I believe that we’re going to win, I believe that … My comments yesterday reflected the fact that we’re not succeeding nearly as fast as I had wanted.”

“He said his earlier comments were meant to say that, “I believe that we’re going to win, I believe that … My comments yesterday reflected the fact that we’re not succeeding nearly as fast as I had wanted.”
So ORIGINALLY when he said that we were winning- he MEANT to say “I believe we are going to win” so the two statements are more or less equal in his eyes–
THEN: yesterday when he said we AREN’T winning- what he meant was that we aren’t winning as fast as he wanted..

Let me try. At the beginning of a highlighted word or phrase, there is a command that says, “Start printing this in bold” [or italics or in a block quote].
The computer will continue to print merrily along in bold/whatever until there is ANOTHER command saying “Stop doing bold/whatever.”
If people do the first one, and not the second one that stops the action, it spills over into all other comments beneath.
It is possible for most people to edit within 5 minutes. After that we have to throw ourselves on the mercy of the moderators :)
A civilian watching a long run of unintended bold/italic/other comments can intervene by simply putting in {/b} or {/i} or {/blockquote} with these symbols: instead of { and }.
Hope this helps.

This (if ya can kick in the nearly $30) would make one part of a nice diptych with the Arabic script (which I have no other idea than finding the quote and running it through maybe Babelfish of Google’s translator. Then print results.)

What a WONDERFUL idea you have!
Let me suggest, however, that you NOT use a “Babelfish” type of automatic translator AT ALL.
While I don’t know Arabic, not even a few phrases, for the non-English languages I do know, the result of a Babelfish-type automatic translation is always way off the mark, and provides inadvertant hilarity. Which I assume is NOT the effect you’re looking for.
I wonder if the speech you have in mind has already been translated by a native speaker — and I’m wondering how best you can find that out.
Are you limited in how much time you have to get the present organized? If you are NOT shooting for Christmas, or maybe even not for New Year’s Day, here’s a suggestion:
Do you have a nearby university? (Or even one farther away if you don’t mind long-distance charges?)
Pick a university with an Arabic (or Middle Eastern) Studies Department — give them a call and explain your problem. There are always graduate students looking for little jobs to do. I used to pick up translation jobs that way when I was in two different graduate programs — and I charged fees that were less than translation companies charged, so that I could essentially outbid them.
But don’t forget to ask if there’s someone who can help you find out if this speech has already been translated. It may be that you only need help in being steered to what’s there already.
University departments are used to fielding calls like this all the time, and unless the reception person is momentarily swamped with urgent work, they usually go out of their way to be helpful. After all, they’re in the market to pick up new students, and to be able to tell their own graduate students that there’s work out there after their studies are over, and to keep their grad students from quitting because they’re starving to death.
Good luck! I think your idea is perfect!

Just had another thought:
In terms of finding out if such a translation of JFK’s speech already exists, I’m thinking that a phone call to an academic library with extensive Arabic holdings — wherein you ask to speak with the person at the reference desk — might be a good bet. It shouldn’t be too hard to find out which libraries would fit the bill.
The reference librarian, if he/she wouldn’t know where to find it, would surely give suggestions on how to find out — and would more likely go through those steps him/herself to aid you.
Hmmmm. Here’s one more idea off the top of my head — calling an embassy or consulate (for an Arabic-speaking country) or another non-official cultural agency.
Use your ingenuity and your phone — again, good luck!
Mrs. K8 @ 109
Thanks, Mrs. The Iraqi speaks the english not so well yet he suffers patiently with the not so good student in me. Thought this could bridge the gap and show my appreciation. And yes, the translation must be such that it passes the meaning of JFK’s phrase. All the subtle things that just a word for word ain’t gonna get.

For me, and I’m sure many of you, one of the most painful parts is that, six years ago, we saw it coming. We knew that Dubya was a clod and a clown and would be a lousy president. Heck, back in 2000 when he was appointed, I had a feeling he’d be invading Iraq, and that he and his cronies would consider it a no-lose proposition.
Worse yet, he’s exceeded my darkest nightmares. I knew he’d be bad, but OMFG, I had no idea that he’d have so many opportunities to mess up so much so badly! I’ll be forever grateful to those who protected Social Security from that moron, and will be forever ashamed at those who could have prevented some of his other atrocities (e.g. Alito) but did not.
On the other hand – Loved the video. I knew John Barrowman had talent, but *damn*! Captain Jack, you’re a man of *many* talents!
