Remember the feeding frenzy on primary day in Connecticut when all the media could talk about was the hack of Lieberman's website by Lamont's blogger supporters? As the above clip Scarce put up from the new BBC/Sundance Documentary Blog Wars demonstrates, thinking people were calling "bullshit" at the time. I guess "thinking people" would not, it seem, include the following….
CNN,
…because the US Attorney for the State of Connecticut, Kevin O'Connor (a Republican whose name was bandied about as a replacement for Alan Schlesinger, before Karl Rove put out the word that the GOP should not put up any opposition to Lieberman), the FBI and State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal have concluded that the whole "site hack" accusation was pure fabrication with no basis in fact.
It only took four months for them to conclude not only that the Lamont campaign (and supporters) were absolutely not involved, but also that what happened is EXACTLY WHAT WE WERE F@#$ING SAYING ON AUGUST 8th!!
After all of Joe's whining and accusations, now he has no comment?
Yeah, got'cha, what a classy senator.
Will Mark Davis, Chris Matthews, and every other TV personality and radio host that trumpeted the Lieberman website crash as the work of Lamont or bloggers supporting Lamont? Doubtful.
And greenpeas over at MLN has, I think, the final word:
Where's Jon Carroll on this story?
Since Beat the Press operates under the belief system that the MSM has laudable, tangible, standards and ethics which produce fine results, and the blogosphere is dangerously "without" them, let's see how they explain this story?
The bloggers had it figured out in hours; the FBI took months to provide essentially no more details than the bloggers provided in August. Meanwhile, the MSM with all its ethics, standards, and guidelines — got taken for a ride that may have affected the spread in the primary race.
Chris Matthews got punk'd by Lieberman, as did everyone else who promulgated this stupid story. Matthews should go over and stand in the corner with Ellen Tauscher, as they're both showing telltale signs of Toxic Joe Exposure.

Oh, come on, Loserman punk’d EVERYBODY. Especially the ones who voted for him. I guess he never IMAGINED someone might actually investigate to see if the story of the “hacked” website was true or not. But…truth is not his virtue, now is it?
I’m sure Shortride will issue a press statement any minute apologizing for the unsubstantiated charge.

I just heard on Tweety’s show that Joe Wilson got a subpoena to testify FOR the DEFENSE (Scooter). Tweety says Joe is trying to have the subpoena quashed.
Has this been discussed here already?
My reaction is — Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!? Why does Scooter want Wilson as a defense witness? Are they going to say it’s Joe Wilson’s fault that Scooter lied to investigators and the grand jury?
Punk’d by Lieberman… Gawd how embarassing that must be.
FAIRIES!!
Olbermann would publicize this, but he won’t because
a) he’s on vacation and we’re being treated to OddBall Extravaganza and
b) Chris Matthews got punk’d and Olbermann doesn’t criticize NBC/MSNBC talking heads.
So, who to Spotlight this to?
Why are those damn fairies always weakening my seams?
Tweety just mentioned “Joe Wilson, who started all this flap…”
Sheesh.
Maybe Punkinhead Russert would like to take Tweety down a peg?
They don’t call him Traitor Joe for nuthin.

Stephen –
Thank you!
However, I wondered if there had been a discussion.
Jayt merely stated the same thing I did here and two threads back — that Scooter Libby’s defense team subpoena’d Joe Wilson. Wilson is moving to have the subpoena quashed.
I guess jayt is hoping for the same thing I’m hoping for — a discussion about this.
But maybe time is needed to digest this fact, and ponder what’s going on. It sounds bizarre to me.
n any event, I’ll have to check back later after I go now to do p.t. in the pool.

We tend to forget how far out in front we are versus the rest of the world.
I have had so many conversations with Ivy League educated people about politics and the blogs, and they just don’t get it, yet. They have heard that the blogs are crazed maniacs and not to be treated as credible.
They have mostly thot until recently that the whole fuss about Bush and the war was just those rabid people on the extreme left.
Reality is sinking in, slowly, slowly.
But I remain astonished at the ignorance of very intelligent, highly connected people in Washington DC about what the blogs are.
And btw the Atlantic still doesn’t know what they are doing with respect to bloggers. They aspire to have some “internet presence” regarding politics. Oh be still my beating heart [not really, heart attack family here]. They JUST DON’T GET IT.

RICO doesn’t apply because the Supreme Court has ruled that private citizens don’t have a cause of action under RICO. The case is Scheidler v National Organization for Women. NOW sought to sue Randall Terry and his affiliates under RICO. The court said, nope, can’t do that.

“The Peanut and I just finished decorating a gingerbread house.”
Umm, people, our Christy/ReddHedd is even more a Superwoman than I thought. She wrote two, or was it four, well-thought-out, well-researched and well-written posts this morning, nursed a painfully ill Peanut, replied to all our questions and comments, and then put together and decorated a GINGERBREAD HOUSE? All before dinnertime!
Can’t tell you how many times I have PLANNED to do a gingerbread house for Christmas, then got intimidated by the sheer amount of work involved and put it off for yet another year.
(I hope this doesn’t come off as snarky – I’m truly amazed by the amount of energy, not to mention organization, just this one day of Christy’s life/work has entailed. And that’s just the part we know about.)

OT – Tonight as I drove through a local town St. Michaels, I saw something that made me cry. Right there in my car.
Two older men (O.K., honestly they were my age) holding up two signs and one was carrying a flag. The sign read “Support the Troops” (these signs are everywhere in our republican area) and right under that was hand printed “Bring Them Home NOW”. The second sign read “Let there be a world without war”.
I honked and did a thunbs up (kooky, right?) and they both flashed the peace sign at me. Whoa, images of my younger years. I, of the Viet Nam generation was transported in time.
If those thoughts are perculating in this very conservative, very religous area, then times they are a changing.

Go figure. [The context makes pretty clear that Seidman is referring to Joe Wilson, not to Valerie Plame Wilson.]

Hey, at least the FRC can read the handwriting on the wall. The fact that a study has a goal influencing policy doesn’t necessarily invalidate it. They fucking well ought to know that very well, they’ve claimed it for their own often enough.
The proof of the pudding is in the analysis. Is it logically sound? Does it treat the data in accordance with the survey design? Does it use generally recognized statistical procedures? How does it handle missing data?
If you have satisfactory answers to those questions, then the argument that PP has an axe to grind is a colander, not a bucket.

PRESIDENT BUSH signed legislation Monday to provide nuclear technology to India, a deal that critics say could do more harm than good to U.S. interests. They’re wrong. It already is complicating U.S. strategy in Asia and elsewhere.
Exhibit A was playing out in Beijing as Bush signed the deal in Washington. As talks opened among China, Japan, Russia, the U.S. and South and North Korea over the North’s nuclear ambitions, North Korean negotiators reiterated their right to build nuclear weapons. The U.S. rightly condemns Kim Jong Il’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty in 2003, yet it overlooks India’s refusal to sign it. It’s hard not to see a double standard at work here — nuclear weapons are OK for our friends but not for our enemies.

The truth is, the press has simply lost its sense of purpose. There are too few members of the Fourth Estate who understand the need to help Americans to make the important choices citizens must make in a democracy by giving their stories context; by discussing the ideas which drive (or should drive) our political debate; and, yes, by crying bullshit when necessary.
Other than the Connecticut press, I doubt the national journalists who covered this erroneously in August will come within ten feet of it now. Unless Miss USA had something to do with Joe’s site going down.
