One of the most exasperating press impulses following the November election was the insistence upon slavishly reprinting the official Lieberman spin about his return to Washington DC, like he was the most powerful and feted pig in the pen (Greg Sargent pitched an appropriate fit over that one). As if he'd just walked away unscathed from an inglorious primary defeat and the onus of having to raise $20 million to defend his 18-year seat. Did anyone really think that any politician could gaze upon him afterwards without instinctively shuddering at the thought of being Liebermaned?
It certainly seems to have occured to Ellen Tauscher. Having decided that her photo with George Bush (now fondly known as "the Caress") on her government website wasn't doing her any favors, she scrubbed it. This is Tauscher's website now — notice no picture of "The Caress." But that's apparently not all she scrubbed. A reader did some digging and found the two Google screen grabs (below) which show that there are two photos of Tauscher being cozy with Lieberman. She obviously thought the better of it and has recently removed them from her website (this link shows a cache of where the photo above used to be). I'm sure she'd rather contract typhoid than have anyone draw that particular comparison right now:
The DC set may put on a good show for the cameras of the easily fooled, but it's a thin veneer of composure. You don't have to dig very deep to find the place just underneath the surface of every Beltway bore where they gaze at Lieberman and shreik "The horror! The horror!" And Tauscher's consignment of him to the jpeg shitcan to save her own skin is a loud, clear testament to that fact.
But is it too late? Has Tauscher herself become radioactive after her recent meeting with Bush? Says blogswarm over at Calitics:
While it is quite clear that Tauscher's current team only knows how to be counterproductive online, the larger problem is that her campaign should lack the ability to hire a netroots consultant who knows better. Working for Tauscher would be a career killer for a blogosphere coordinator and while the money might be good, it would be likely to cost other clients (a Democratic candidate would be a fool to waste money on an internet firm facing the wrath of the progressive blogosphere for selling out in this marquee race).
The days when you could hire the idiot nephew to run the netroots component of your campaign are long gone. It should be very interesting to see who might be willing to stand in the line of fire currently being aimed at Tauscher (which is getting no small amount of high-profile attention).
And bonus points for clicking through to this — which Tauscher obviously has no ability to scrub. Because, well, who wouldn't.

The shoe Fitz!
Tauscher was my congresswoman when I lived in Walnut Creek. She fits in very well with the Repbulicans and the Liebermans.
Fing helarious. Love it y’all….
Thanks Jane…
Any time Joe can be maligned I love it! The last photo is just perfect…I wonder if Ellen and Joe know Tom Delay?
I didn’t know old rape gurney joe had that kind of charisma. Or am I just seeing things?
Maybe she pulled that photo at the top because she appears a little cold there, you know, like it might be a bit nippy out?
and so, my fellow americans, the issue of our lamont vs. lieberman campaign has been properly framed.
she’s heard the footsteps.
we can keep a proper distance, but she knows we’re there.
thank you, ned. your sacrifice was not in vain and this is the proof.
this is not the end.
this is only the beginning.
next?
I’m just suprised that she is holding her sunglasses considering the fact she is basking in Joe’s superstar power… must have been blinding!
And I did click thru to the WH photo– total gag a maggot.
(who is on the far right? it couldn’t be Fitz, could it?)
In that bonus-points link, Ellen and Joe are sharing a much more high profile stage. If you click the link next to the photo there for the press release of the main speaker’s remarks, you’ll see that Ellen is singled out by name along with the following members of the house and senate:
Phil Gramm
Fred Thompson
Joe Lieberman
Zell Miller
Don Nickles
Dick Armey
Tom Delay
Rob Portman
Yep, that’s a really progressive bunch. Funny how most of them are no longer in office . . .
“hire the idiot nephew”
LMAO.
Important post Jane, as per usual. The reality-based-community is changing the face of US politics.
oh thank goodness, Peterr; he did appear too short. It’s Portman.
Calamity Joe
Holy Joe’s Crusaders step up to the plate. Taushcer’s gonna cheerlead. Rah rah rah, sis… BOOM! …

AP – Modesto CA
Rep Tauscher in an undisclosed retreat while awaiting the next neo enabling pep rally was overheard warning all aides to “keep the cover of Time magazine out of her sight and order a new shade of lipstick!”
Lieberman is a symbol for all that is wrong in elected politics today. It cost him $20 Mil of someone else’s money but he managed to get back to Washington and immediately revealed that he was lying in his campaign about troop reductions in Iraq. Taushcer is not no better and her connection with Liar Joe can only have a negative effect. Thanks for posting this. The more play the better.

This is somewhat off-topic, but I felt a need to stop by and say hello. Hi FDL community!
I posted a short clip from my screener copy of the Blog Wars doc featuring Connecticut Bob and Markos that I thought would be a fun diversion for everyone.
All in all, the film is awesome, and watching it makes me miss having Jane in state. Speaking of which, if any of y’all are in the CT area, Connecticut Bob is having a big screening party in Milford tomorrow night, for which you must RSVP at blogwars@yahoo.com
“An executive staff member at New Life Church in Colorado Springs has resigned after admitting to sexual misconduct and other mistakes – the result of an examination of the staff’s moral makeup after the ouster of senior pastor Ted Haggard, a church official said Sunday. Christopher Beard, who headed a ministry that trained young adults in leadership skills, stepped down Friday after admitting to “a series of decisions displaying poor judgment, including one incident of sexual misconduct several years ago,” said Rob Brendle, an associate pastor at the 14,000- member church.”
When it rains it pours at this fundie church!
Hooooray Spazeboy!!
Thanks for all your work for Ned!

today snow said the whitehous is not blockong leverette’s writing
as far as I can see this is with a release from any gag order he has been issued by the white house
he needs to jump on this and release his writing before the whitehouse rescinds this statement
some legal authority needs to contact leverette and get that writing while the gettin is good
Thanks Jane. My Rep is finally getting the attention she deserves.

I thought the reason they went all fundy and evangelical is because they needed to live by Gawd’s rules to be moral. (At least that’s what my fundy family keeps telling me.) How’s that working out for them?
Well, thank gawd they’re all about to be raptured.
perris @ 28
It remains to be seen if Leverette actually gets his authorization letter.
if an official sLooseheadprop @ 31
if an official spokesperson tells leverette there is nothing resricting his writing, I am pretty sure that qualifies as a release
Looseheadprop @ 31
I guess they can say that because it isn’t the WH blocking the writing. It’s the CIA. Pass the buck and all that.
“Nope, nope, can’t do aaaaaanything about it. It’s all the CIA’s fault. They’re the ultimate authority. Take it up with them.”
perris,
Leverette may want to claim that, since it’s on tape. However, normally you get a rather formal letter.
Looseheadprop @ 34
I believe an official spokesperson making the statement is documentation enough
a letter only documents the agreement, if there is other documentation it’s just as valid
he now has documentation and needs to jump on it before it’s rescinded
Did somebody say “idiot nephew“?

Yeah–guess the fundies get ta doin bad things with their dicks jest like the people they attack….

Bustednuckles @ 38
/don’t need to trust him. he’s an official spokesperson and he has given leverette documetnation that’s actionable
he needs to act immediately
If keeping Lieberman in the Democratic fold has anything to do with Harry Reid’s asinine willingness to trust Bush and escalate the war, I wish our elected representatives would just get over with it, let Lieberman cross lines and let Cheney have the tie-breaking vote. It would pay off in the long-run (’08). Lieberman is not worth it.
perris @ 35
Certaily, that argument can be made. I’m just saying that it deviates from a fairly formal procedure. If I were him, I would probably do just as you suggest
rwcole @ 37
My point is that if you can’t control your dick, even with Gawd’s help, why get all over the case of the decent, hardworking Presbyterian or Atheist who can?
My fundy family makes fun of any religion and sect that isn’t strictly fundamentalist.
Oh, hell, the real problem is that they can’t evaluate data.
naschkatze @ 40
I thinkJane’s point is more nuanced and substantial. Leiberman is not returning in triumph. He is radioactive and a liability to be seen with. Lamont may not have won the election, but i don’t think Leiberman won either.
Difference is, Lamont came out of it all shiny and pretty and can always run again. Holy Joe, not so much
BREAKING
For TeddySanFran
On Tucker they had a segment about the woman runner in India who was evaluated and told she was a man.
After some discussion about how difficult a conversation this might be, Tucker ended by saying, I think fairly seriously, that it involved “transgender rights”. It wasn’t a throwaway laugh line, but just another interesting aspect to the story.
They also had a segment on legalizing marijuana, and Tucker said he wasn’t necessary arguing against that. Wonder how long til he gets taken to the principal’s office for a scolding.
LOL
Leahy as chair of Judiciary, however, is showing he alone might be worth whatever petting RGJoe wants between now and 1/4/07.
It’s not easy for me to say this, but any accommodation Lieberman requires in this interim stage for the 110th, between elected and organized, I’m for letting Harry Reid skate. And as Christy will tell you, I’m not one for letting our incoming Majority Leader skate. But we’ve got to get the Senate organized under Democrats on 1/4/07. After that, there’s no shortage of buses I’m happy to see RGJoe thrown under (metaphorically speaking, sorta).
I’ve even laid off making fun of his McCain-matching leather flight jacket ensemble, chickenhawk that he is.
In punaise’s absence, however, I will post his daily affirmation: My contempt for Joe Lieberman will never abate.
naschkatze at 1:57 pm, not sure where you’re getting this about Reid.
Wrt escalation, the only option open is a temporary “surge” by speeding up redeployments and extending current tours. I don’t mean to diminish how bad this would be, but Powell just came out in support of the Iraq
Slow-LearnersStudy Group. I don’t think most of the GOP supports McCain or Bush on “surge.”Losing control of the Senate, makes it much easier for the GOP to block House investigations by Waxman, Conyers, Dingle …..
I would argue that putting up with Lieberman (and I don’t mean to diminish how bad he is) is worth giving the House investigations unfettered authority.
egregious @ 44
I only overheard Tucker and his sidekick chatting with the ever-present Uncle Pat Buchanan about DeeCee parties, and hollered at my teevee, “What about the fundraising parties Mary Matalin is having alongside your DAD, Tucker, to benefit Scooter?”
Tucker never answers me. And thus I leave the room, missing the important tranny news!
Ha! They know the writing is on the wall. The blogosphere has created an instant accountability factor to ANY transgressions by those who work “for the people” and they know that the 2006 elections were just a taste of what is to come. No more free passes and spin is going to become more and more difficult as more and more people turn to the internet to get the real scoop about politicos…
naschkatze @ 40
Ok, I have a problem with this line of thought. The last 6 years has been marked with people who refused to do the right thing when they had a chance and like two paths diverged in a yellow wood, “that made all of the difference.”
Sandra Day O’Connor voted to put Chimpy in charge so she could retire. George Tenant knew something bad was coming down the pike but didn’t go public before 9/11. Colin Powell knew Iraq War II would be a frickin’ disaster and he didn’t resign. And Hillary Rodham Clinton and pals voted for the IWR even though they had to know that the whole thing was a lie just so they could save their seats. (For Hillary, this is a completely stupid move because she didn’t have to face election until the war was a proven catastrophe. She could have looked like a wise and prescient leader. Now she looks like a craven, calculating, cowlardly triangulator.)
So, no, I don’t think letting Lieberman go just so the babies can have their way is a good idea. In fact, we must fight such a thing tooth and nail and show the American public just how important it is that he stick to his committment and caucus with us no matter what a loathsome, unsavory, unprincipled creature he is. It is the right thing.
That last photo is such a perfect illustration of Bush’s idea of compromise. To other people, compromise means you give me some of what I want, and I give you some of what you want. To Bush, it means you give me all of what I want, and I let you stand in the front row at the photo op!

When I worked as a corrections administrator, I interviewed a fair number of fundamentalist clergy passing through our system for sexual abuse of minors. From answers I would get to questions on motivation, the common thread was convincing somebody dangerously inappropriate (like a fourteen yo girl, for instance) into acting. Then the perp would counsel the victim afterward of their common need to seek forgiveness, most often through prayer directed by the perp to the almighty.
There may be some physiological dynamic involved here beyond the sex or the adrenyline rush pathological criminals often get.

Yeah, by sullying the innocent, they try to convince themselves they are not so bad after all, because “we are all sinners”.
Therefore, if they convince the child that the child was a willing particpant and therefore “sinned” they re both on the same level and the pedophile gets to feel better about himself.

Freakishly warm in NY.
I cannot beleive it’s only a week until Christmas. We don’t even have the heat turned on at home
19.5 degrees F and snowing lightly with no wind. Perfect!
Just for clarification – I believe Reid’s position is accurately portrayed here:
Yesterday, incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said he could support a brief increase in troop levels but only as part of a plan for phased withdrawal.
His position has been described in headlines as approval for escalation but his actual statement (and all the MSM coverage I’ve been able to trace) notes that this is solely for 2-3 months while gearing up for withdrawal during 2007.
Not saying I agree or approve (I don’t) but just offering a fact check.
Teddy,
I feel like you are giving all of us an education about transgender issues, and I wanted you to know right away of this good news on national television. From a conservative.

Ed*ard Teller @ 52
Oh, I think they are truly sorry and remorseful. They believe they let God down. But the thing is, their faith doesn’t help prevent the crime in the first place. The psychological component may be that these are people of very strong appetites and passions and they are drawn to a very strict church in order to exercise some control over their appetites. But it doesn’t work because the church asks them to deny their sexuality. The Gospel of Thomas says “If you bring forth what is in you, that within you will save you. If you do not bring forth what is in you, that within you will destroy you.” Is it any wonder that the early church fathers wanted to purge this gospel? It doesn’t mesh with the idea of self denial.
Sooner or later, the perp is going to give in to those appetites. In a more mature atmosphere, he might have met a mature woman to have sex with. Or he might have found a boyfriend. When the new love interest is accepted by the community, there’s no reason to sneak around or try to influence impressionable adolescents. IMHO, the church is equally responsible for the crime. The set impossibly high standards for sexual beings to reach and they threaten those beings with ostracism if they fall out of line and become “worldly”. If you grow up in a fundy church and your whole family is involved, that could mean losing your family. It’s serious.

I would have thought that by now…by this late date folks in the blogosphere would have realised that coddling Joey the Liarmann is a losing proposition. The idea that progressives need him in the Dem caucus is short term idiocy and long term disaster.
Let him vote with the ReThugs, let him lie and pander.
As Shakespeare said it best: ‘The Truth will out…’
Our struggle against the forces behind Liarmann and Tauscher will be decades long and we will not win if we pander to the the sick creatures such as Liarmann and The Blonde Frog. When you make these sorts of arguments you are saying that you do not trust the citizenry to vote in their best interests. It’s true they do not always do so, but…
Coming off an election where the people spoke in the most progressive of tones in decades such and attitude is ignorant.
The people will continue to speak. We need to give them candidates who will listen.
If that means fighting and losing when a ‘Democrat’ is revealed to be a Bushista…

I like retelling this story;
when I was young, my parents would often get for the hilidays anything I asked for…we were lower middle class, but they did whatevery the could to make their children happy
anyway, when they did get me something I cherished, the would at times try to use it as a punishment if I did something wrong
even as a child, I would never let that fly.
whenever they witheld a gift as punishment, as soon as the gift was returned I destroyed it
needless to say, they didn’t do that too often, but that’s the way I am, a gift is something that is mine, it’s not something that you can withhold

This shows exactly what kind of judgment Tauscher has. That being the case, it’s evident where her political trajectory is headed for ‘08.

angie @ 132
Also from the wiki: the spelling of the shortened form of her name is “Christie,” not “Christy.”
Your opening line brought me up short. “What’s angie doing dissing one of the proprietors of the Lake?” Then I realized you were not talking about Redd, but Whitman.
That’s one typo we need to be careful of around here.
Tucker says leftist bloggers are scary.
I say we invite him over to talk with us. [We would need to be on Book Salon-level courtesy.]
I think he could be persuaded that there are those of us who are civilized folk on the progressive blogs.
Even if we don’t create a new ally, we soften the opposition to us as the crazy people.
Worth a try?
Beware the liebercooties.
That shit will kill your political career…
1,366 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Siun and the Firepup Patriots:
I am no lover of Harry Reid but I believe that his statement of support for the increase in troop levels with the qualifications stated was a brilliant political move…it forges a bond with the Generals and gives ‘em cover with the majority in Congress against an increasingly bunkered White House and State Dept. Also, and maybe more importantly, McCain’s plan to use the old Nazi “stabbed in the back” line is now dead on arrival.
If you look at the pre-emptive moves of the incoming Democratic leadership, the field of battle is shrinkin’ for Clusterfuck and the crypto-fascists. First Rangle proposes a draft, which Nancy P publicly swats down lettin’ the Democrats have both ends of the debate. The fascists can’t get the increased troop levels for a permanent committment without goin to the Congress for more money and the alternative is a draft which they have already been painted into a corner as opposin’ but the Democratic leadership takes credit for stoppin’ it. Secondly, the fascists bailed out on the old session without continued budget authorizations which could have covered any force increases. This gives the Democrats complete budgetary control over how much the military will get for the troop increase…this makes it impossible for the administration to get funds for a long term increase in forces since the Democrats will authorize only funds for the “evacuation” cover as stipulated by Harry Reid.
I have a great deal of respect for incomin’ committee chairs in both houses of Congress but especially in the House. Nancy Pelosi knows where her power comes from…she keeps her span of control manageable thru her political alliances with the committee chairs and they, in turn, crack the whip on the DINOs and blue dogs on their committees.
I think we’re gunna see masterful political management in the House of Representatives…Nancy P knows what she’s doin’ and the folks she’s got managin’ the committees are the best on either side of the isle.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE POPCORN, THIS IS GUNNA BE A HOOT!!!
I hope, when the time comes, you will take equal and accurate aim at Barbara “Joe is my friend” Boxer.
Tauscher may be more out there as a greedy corporate whore, but Boxer is no less a whore. Please, I hope you will save some of your ire for Boxer.
