For the record, I spent a couple of hours in a room with the man in NYC, with a bunch of other bloggers, and did not once think to myself, "Gee, I wonder what the Clenis is thinking?" Would that the heavy breathing movers and shakers of the world of journalism could do the same.
Her campaign strategists also have to be "very careful" about managing Bill because "he sucks up the air around everybody when he's there," says Thurber. "And he needs to be loved. She is more self-assured, doesn't need as much adulation as he does. And that's trouble."There are "so many barriers for her, alone, and then add Bill in there and then add his infidelity to it," says Thurber. "Well, she doesn't want to be looking over her shoulder and having questions asked by the media about it."
But there will be questions aplenty. How could there not be? The Clinton marriage fell into political soap opera with the troubles of Bill's White House years, with nothing but question marks hovering overhead, for a time. Was he contrite? Had she forgiven him? Would she stay? The woman whose earlier assertiveness as first lady rankled some now was tagged with a new set of labels: Hillary the martyr. Hillary the steadfast, for sticking with her man. Hillary as Machiavelli, accepting marital humiliation as the price of power.
Complained someone who worked on her White House staff, who requested anonymity to speak freely: "If your husband has an affair and you forgive him, you get to turn the corner and move on. She never does." Not in the public mind, at least.
Hogwash. These people clearly need to get out more...is this really journalism or did I mistakenly stumble on Page Six masquerading as a "think piece" inside the Beltway? Nothing like a little torrid prose and references to something naughty to spice up your article, I suppose, but here's a thought: why not tackle Hillary Clinton's record on the merits, and stay out of her panty drawer altogether?

The Clenis!
well, I never used my mulligan asking - “what does EPU mean?”
The ‘Clenis’, however, baffled me for a long time, until I thought to pronounce it witha a long ‘E’.
“The Clinton marriage fell into political soap opera“
–more like the media made it into a soap opera.
Stinkhorns!!!
(What? It’s the back cover from Tori Amos’ fabulous “Little Earthquakes” album. Why do you ask?)
Oh, I just assumed this was from the mushroom scene in Fantasia’s version of the Nutcracker. Silly me.
Hilarious image! Just to show you how out of touch they are, nobody outside of DC or New York gives a rat’s ass about Hillary.
God knows there should be enough scandal in her ongoing support for Bush’s stupid wars and corporate privilege.
(What? It’s the back cover from Tori Amos’ fabulous “Little Earthquakes” album. Why do you ask?)
Oh…. no reason.
-ck- @ 5
That’d be a great nickname for the bozos who write this sort of tripe! “Horns” suggests their constant attention to other people’s panties, and “stink” appropriately describes the resulting prose.
Oh, fer crying out loud!
There’s plenty there to seriously question Hill about; her marriage is not one of those things!
She was a very fine first lady.
I do not support her stance on foreign policy at all.
Hillary is a mess in her own regard. She doesn’t need any help.
She supported the Iraqi invasion. She hasn’t backed away from that and admitted blatant culpability and complicity in that greatest of American debacles. She has no right to expect the support of thinking people; she doesn’t support, “thinking,” why should she expect those who do to reciprocate.
A huge war chest is not carte blanche to represent the people. It is just better proof that favors are owed to special interest, but you can see why she would not want to promote anyone thinking about that.
angie at 11 — I had the exact same reaction when I read this: Oh, fer crying out loud!
angie @ 11
Agreed entirely. It’s too easy to reject her on substance. We don’t need celebrity fluff.
And does anyone else get irritated by the double standard on the whole “stand by yer man” tone on Hillary and Bill — but the hypocrisy of the “marriage is sacred” crowd being the ones who push that as a negative? Why does no one ever call them on this — either you want people to work through their problems and stay married or you don’t. Jerks.
Twisted Martini @ 7
Amen to that…
Well, except for those poll numbers. I’ve got 20 bucks that says she never sees the inside of Indiana.
I’m reminded of the Green Bay Packers in the 80’s-every time they won a game, which wasn’t very often, the breathless press used to write, “The Pack is Back!” No they weren’t, but that didn’t stop dumbasses from writing about it.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 15
yes.
precisely.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 15
I’m sure I would, if I gave enough of a damn what these assholes have to say about anybody’s personal life to pay them any attention in the first place.
That line about ‘Forgive, turn corner, move on…” But not for Hillary. I’m no fan, but political reporting that FOCUSES to exclusion on this crap is NOT political reporting. It is crap. Her biggest strategic decision, should she run (and only slightly behind what policy for Iraq/apology for vote - and get us out) is how to somehow do what JFK did about being a Catholic. Make one very public and inarguable statement. Case closed. But how to do that.
Big Dawg’s faults will dog her cammpaign. (Even though I’m for lots of others ahead of her…would hold nose and vote IF she were to gain Dem nomintation.)

“New York Liberals at Liberal convention in Liberal New York nominate Liberal senator from Liberal New York State (that’s on the East Coast, where the Liberals live)as Liberal candidate for President. And her name is Clinton.”
Headline from August 2008. You know it’s already been written.
“Beltway Stinkhorns” sounds like a sports team of some sort.
the media does it because the public eats it up.
PeteCO at 22 — the fact that I can think of publications wherein that might actually run is fightening…
twolf1 at 25 — Okay. That list is just sad.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 26
Yes, and it speaks volumes
twolf1 @ 24– I must be completely out of touch with most of America– I missed all 10!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 25
Another good reason to pick Denver for the convention-it blows that meme out of the water. They did it to Kerry in Boston.
Yes, I’m biased.
In the meantime, Broderella finds that my Congresswoman may be deserving of cocktail wienies. His tone in this column is sooooooo condescending, so cliff-dweller, so kewl kidz.
Teddy at 30 — I haven’t managed to get myself to that one yet this morning. I’m trying to take it slow, or else I’m afraid I will need blood pressure meds. The past month or two, the condescending snear that has escalated regarding the personal details when talking about Democratic women in politics has been wratcheting up my irritation level…
TeddySanFran @ 30
“The small gestures she has made to the Republicans suggest a willingness to accommodate, rather than a vindictive reaction to the Democratic victory.
That bodes well for the future.”

Well, here’s Connie Chung courtesy of Kieth Olbermann: Countdown to the Memories Connie Chung
warning: use ear protection when playing this video.
OT but not, according to Huffpost Harry Reid has just said on TV that a “brief troop surge” is OK! The Dems are just going to lay down and let Bushco roll over them.
I can’t remember who it was I heard say this on
Air America - Thom Hartmann or Stephanie - about the ‘08 hopefuls:
Front runners in the Family Values party: Average of three marriages apiece.
Front runners in the Family of Man party: One. Marriage. Apiece.
Suck on that, (I can’t believe I’m saying this) David Broder and friends.
I’ve gotta fly to Chicago.
FDL, please don’t let any right wing propaganda get registered as valid over the next few days without serious blowback. This congress will make a very concerted effort in its final days to spin itself as something other than the most worthless collection of do-nothing herd animals ever assembled in those august halls.
The MSM has shown itself ready and willing to help. I feel it is a minor, downplayed media occurrence but a very, very crucial one. We — non, kool aid drinking, free thinkers — operate under the daily assumption that the rubber stamp congress and its supporting media lapdogs are just that, and we accept it and move on.
I state now, that it is time to back up and imagine what it is like to have not quite so firmly held convictions. Imagine that you would be susceptible to a general theme of, “Hey that congress wasn’t really so bad, look, they did some stuff, sorta.”
Don’t let that message be accepted or, at the very least, do your damndest to rail against it.
This congress was bad, very bad. They sat on their hands or they fiddled with something while the great principles of this country where crushed beneath the wheel of the authoritarian administration. They were bad. They still are. It is an undercurrent, but I see them trying to build a foundation of belief that they were not horrible. Don’t let them do it!
Mommybrain at 36 — well, that IS an interesting little tidbit, isn’t it?
Twisted Martini @ 33
I don’t see how that’s an issue-Denver has a bunch of hotels downtown (including the new 1100 room Hyatt), if you factor in the hotels that are now a quick ride away on the gleaming new light rail that just opened (About thirty minutes door to door from the Tech Centre to the Pepsi Centre). It appears that paying for it is the sticking point, from what I’m picking up in the local media. Ken “Nighthorse” Salazar made a comment to that effect on local tv a couple of days ago.
PeteCO at 39 — Hmmmm…I can see it being a negotiation on who pays for what. Security, alone, these days is a huge cost item…
Twisted Martini @ 33
Also this, from today’s Denver Post;

for those who missed it.
I have no cable/TiVo (btw - how do they KNOW/calculate what’s been tivo’d?) I also missed all those top ten ‘moments’..
Might be a better measure on YouTube views. Like Colbert @ DC correspondent’s dinner? etc…(or paid downloads from iTMS of same?)

Uh-huh. And it should be documented and used ag’i'n’ ‘em, over and over, until it sticks.
Mommybrain at 43 — I’m picturing a bumper sticker with the word “hypocrisy” in large letters. *g*
Okay, folks, let’s look at another rage-inducing quote from that piece:
Lynne Duke, can you be any less self-aware? Can you write these lines as if the WaPo was NOT part of “the media-industrial complex”? You’re leading the bloodthirsty pack right now! The Clinton marriage will be a central issue because you will make it an issue with articles like this … articles full of over-blown language (”…their past and future; on the Clintons and their mysteries; on power and politics as the Clinton lifeblood propelling her run against all odds”) that belongs in some badly written erotica, not serious political discussion.
Liberal media, indeed.
There are only two things I do not care for in Hillary Clinton. Her position (or non-position) on Iraq and the Senator’s view on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, whatever that ‘view’ is.
Until these matters are cleared up, I cannot support her.
And I don’t give a God damn about her or her husbands private life.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 40
I believe the Feds pick up the tab for that. Qwest already offered to underwrite all the telecoms infrastructure that will be required. A couple of weeks ago it was being reported as a slam-dunk for Denver, locally. Now, not so much. I wonder if Howard Dean is concerned about irritating the Mediocracy by making them come to Flyover Country. You can have so much more fun in NYC when somebody else is paying.
Just another example of a newspaper journalist who had nothing to write about so she fell back on an old standard.
Wingnuts are willing Clinton to run because it will make their lives as OpEd colmumnists and pseudo-journalists much easier.
They can dust off all those old White Water and Lewinsky articles that did not make the cut and splice them into current themes.
It’s a lazy journo’s way of making news not so interesting.
Funny how Jeff Gannon’s cummings and goings in the WH didn’t attract the same kind of attention Clinton’s bj did. The only reason I find the Gannon/Bush affair relevant is due to it’s high level of hypocrisy.
Mommybrain @ 43
Document and use, document and use, again and again and again, yes! The pen is mightier than the sword and the database is mightier than the ICBM. Build a database of inane, illogical, pandering, destructively slanted hogwash uttered by those who continue to think they deserve the right to serve the people. Then, throw it back in their faces.
Logic is a tricky thing. Tricky in that it works every time so some people tend not to like it. But build the database of false ideas proposed by the false prophets and use it against them when they are shown to be wrong, soon the whole country will embrace modus ponens. Or, “How I learned to stop worrying and love the Bi-conditional.” As such:
If you say crap, you are crap.
That thing you said was crap.
Ergo: you are crap.

Build the database and REMEMBER!
Is America Ready?
Hillary’s hair and hemline won’t be issues; her tough national-security approach and famous husband will.
I don’t like the Iraq war. I don’t like what’s going on in Gaza. I don’t like the DLC. I don’t like corruption. These and other issues are what concerns.

And we have much better candidates for the Democratic nomination for president than Hillary Clinton.
1,365 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Hardin Smith and the Firepup Patriots:
Neither Mrs. Clinton nor Obama can win the Democratic nomination period, end of discussion, fin, kaput…No candidate who voted for the war resolution or endorsed the war or the war-makers at any time will make the cut unless he/she recants and asks forgiveness before the ship sails (the primaries).
I am more concerned about how Mrs. Clinton uses her only asset, her husband, to contain, isolate or destroy the progressive candidates. Bill Clinton’s failure to show up for Ned Lamont got Likuderman re-elected. He can destroy the Democratic Party or seal the deal for a progressive candidate but he can’t get his wife nominated or elected.
We must start to isolate Mrs. Clinton right now…deny her legitimacy in the core debates in the Democratic Party but draw her into those debates. Don’t let the public analysis of her candidacy be on the optics of Bill’s infidelity or her struggle against the “male establishment”…get her into the debate on the issues and then atomize her.
Mrs. Clinton is a threat to destroy the Democratic Party but we don’t hafta be afraid of her ever becomin’ President.

Also, WaPo Ombudsman Howell lets readers have their say on diversity among Post columnists, but she ain’t too happy about it.

My favorite Beltway-insider waffling from Broderella:
I’m so comforted that Dean Broder sez my Congresswoman has “grasped the key to doing her job!” We’re all resting much easier.
Also note he can’t resist lording his ‘get’ over the teevee folks: “she is picking her spots carefully from a flood of television interview requests.”
Here’s my suggestion for political coverage ‘08: The Clinton Clause.
“I, _______, a reporter/editor/pundit/columnist for [insert national news organization here], do solemnly pledge that I will not mention Hillary’s marriage, Bill Clinton’s hypothetical effect on her run, or the Monica scandal as a ‘national trauma’ without also:
1.) Pointing out that Monica-gate is to real national traumas (like Iraq and Katrina) as a paper-cut is to a sucking chest wound; and
2.) Giving equal time to the marriage contradictions and hypocrisies of all other leading candidates; and
3.) Admitting that the only people who like to talk about the Clinton marriage are those within the Gang of 500 and Republican operatives.”
Any other sub-clauses that need to be added?
Why isn’t there handwringing about the enabling activities of Laura “Pickles the Killer” Bush and her pathological insistence that if only the media would focus on the schools, the schools, the schools…all would be fine in Iraq?
Meanwhile in Iraq:
“Iraqi police said they had found around 53 bodies in Baghdad in the last 24 hours, 9 of them apparently killed execution-style.”
In Laura’s disjointed and perverse world….Why won’t the media report that most of those bodies were found near recently painted schools?

Respectful Dissent @ 60
Any mention of Clinton marital status must be accompanied by a comparable mention of a Republican’s marital status. For example, “Newt Gingrich criticized New York senator Hillary Clinton’s morals today. Gingrich, the thrice-married former House speaker, resigned when his adulterous affair during his House tenure became public.”
Or
“72 year old senator John Sidney McCain III, who has acknowledged engaging in extramarital affairs, joined Gingrich in criticizing the New York senator.”
Dixie @ 63
Ooh, yeah. Except they’d have to phrase it in the 3rd person, otherwise they’d break the fiction that reporting is from the omniscient 3rd-person point of view, rather than the reality that it’s a short chain of reporters and editors that foist this upon the nation.
cleter @ 64
Seriously, we boil these down to the simplest, best axioms we can, then submit them to all major news outlets en masse.
They have to know we’re watching them.
Someone should write up a final version of the Clinton Clause so we can spotlight it. Now that I have new spotlighting skills. (thanks, scarecrow)
Anyone know where Hillarys war chest has come from? What groups? Any republicans, ALA Lieberman?
ReneND @ 67
I think a lot of it is left over from all the gold bars in the secret Swiss bank account that the KGB set up for Bill back in 1992. And there’s all those French investments. And I think she got a share of all the golden Buddha statues Al Gore received in his meetings with the secret Buddhist cabal back in 1999.
1,365 DAYZ AND THRE KILLION’ GOEZ OPN AND ON AND..
Citizen ReneND:
Great idea. Progressive bloggers and muckrakers (are you listening Josh Marshall?) should go after a complete dissection of Mrs. Clinton’s political identity. Her funding base must be exposed and linked to her stands or lack of them on corresponding issues…her stands on the issues of the day especially the War in Iraq, freedom of choice and tax cuts must be hammered home day after day until she is drawn into the debate. Then when she’s on the battlefield the other candidates can eviscerate ‘er.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION…THIS MIGHT GET FUN!!!

johnSwifty, what you said! You have fleshed out the idea I had when FDL was soliciting ideas for the next stage of BlueAmerica. I would be happy to work on something like this, but someone else would have to be lead. I am timeless these days.
I think this kind of readily available oppo research will be crucial to getting our words and ideas out.
I just got a flier for a coold workshop in January with Edward Tufte, professor emeritus at Yale, called Presenting Data and Information. NorskeFlamethrower @ 69
Well, leaving aside the stance the Lefty Blogosphere takes on Hillary, wouldn’t it be nice if the political reporting on Hillary actually focused on her, you know, politics? Rather than her (tee hee!) marriage?
This is where the Daou Triangle comes in (ironic, given who he’s working for). We firm up the Clinton Clause (including Sub-clause 4 or 5: Political coverage of Hillary shall focus on her actual politics), and then pass it into the MSM … who has a good line to Froomkin?
That’s me on the left. Yeah..me…

“…It should be documented and used…over and over”. Use,wash, reuse, wash…yes there is an infrastructure in the bloggosphere that presents itself as heirs to the muckrakers and have bonafide credentials and the intelligence to do the job (are you listening Josh Marshall ). You’re onto somethin, let’s pressure the good guys we already have in the field to do the right thing.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION!!!
The reason TradMed focuses on the Clinton Marriage is because we, the great unwashed voters, aren’t going to be told anything about her policies. Alone among re-elected Senators from blue states, she is mum on Iraq. She colluded in the fellatio-fest that was the Gates confirmation. She ignores the progressives-of-faith call to denounce WalMart for selling the Left Behind video game while joining with LieberTroop to denounce other “violent” games (and gamers and inattentive gamers’ parents).
In short, the Money Party sees, wonder of wonders, that the front-runners for both “Party” nominations are its premier suck-ups, Old Lord McCain and Lady Unprincipled Clinton. And the Money Party is delighted!
Seriously, folks, do you really think a Clinton Deux Presidency would have a shot in hell at fixing America’s health care crisis? Or that a Clinton Deux Presidency would change course on Iraq/Iran/Syria/Palestine? The likelihood of more war goes up whichever “choice” wins in 11/08 — and that makes the Money Party money!
Wasn’t it Ms. Hillary who yelled at Feingold to “…grow up. This is the real world…” after one of his more public progressive moments?

“…wouldn’t it be nice if the political reporting focused on her, you know, politics?” Yes indeed, but she doesn’t want that, she WANTS the focus on her marriage and her struggles as a woman in the big, bad male dominated world. She is usin’ the corporate media to hide her politics. That’s why the bloggosphere needs to draw her into responding to political questions, get her into the debate and then knock her ass back to the Rose law firm.

OT but eyewitness news on the kidnapping of the red crescent workers in Baghdad - these are good friends of MarkfromIreland who have been kidnapped and his site (link under my name) has more news and will update as news available but notice the involvement of our allies SCIRI in this attack:
The pattern is identical and very very blatant, in each case it has been in an area that’s heavily patrolled by SCIRI controlled forces. In each case it has been in an area to which to gain access you have to go through checkpoint after checkpoint after checkpoint controlled by SCIRI forces. In each case it has been in an area in which to move around you have to go through checkpoint after checkpoint after checkpoint controlled by SCIRI forces. In each case it has been in an area in which to leave you have to go through checkpoint after checkpoint after checkpoint controlled by SCIRI forces.
Here’s what happened today you can see very easily how it fits the pattern. It’s important to know that SCIRI control Karadah.
A large convoy of SUVs identical to those used by Interior Ministry forces arrive at the building. In this case there were at least 10 SUVs. Even by current standards that’s a pretty hefty convoy.
A large number of gunmen storm the building - in other words there was shooting, a lot of shooting, between them and those guarding it.
Nobody came to investigate the shooting. Both the SCIRI controlled Interior ministry and the SCIRI controlled Defense Ministry deny that anyone reported it. The SCIRI controlled police deny that anyone reported it.
In this particular “incident” the gunmen also attacked the Dutch Embassy and captured three of the embassy guards. Are we supposed to believe that the embassy didn’t call for help?
The kidnappers go through the building fairly quickly but very thoroughly - in other words they knew the layout of the building - the plans for buildings such as the Red Crescent Building are on file, you get absolutely no prizes whatsoever for guessing which ministry has those files.
According to people present in the Red Crescent building the gunment “in the uniforms of” the SCIRI controlled special forces took the time to confiscate all the mobile phones they could find.
They even recorded on video cameras brought along for the purpose what they were doing. Don’t believe me?
“A woman who was present at the scene when the gunmen stormed the building told VOI ‘the kidnapers took all the mobiles found with the people present at the office while one of the attackers was recording the kidnapping with a video camera.’ “
The gunmen then drove off taking their victims with them.
Brigadier Abdul-Karim Khalaf (appointed by SCIRI), denies all knowledge of any details of the incident, despite the fact that those detail are being broadcast on several radio stations and carried on Iraqi news sites.
Brigadier Abdul-Karim Khalaf (appointed by SCIRI), makes a statement saying that the SCIRI controlled Interior ministry and the SCIRI controlled Defense Ministry, and the SCIRI controlled police, are busily engaged in setting up check points, roadblocks, and “making investigations.” - Yeah right. The good brigadier doesn’t have far to look.
Neither do the American advisers in the Ministry to whom he reports directly.
Let it not be forgotten that a senior Red Crescent Official complained on Friday that the biggest problems the organisation have are with the American invaders.
TeddySanFran @ 76
Pretty good.
…perhaps we can learn more from the image.
the “stinkhorn” mushroom, or Phallus impudicus (shameless phallus), attracts flies to itself by imitating the smell of rotting animal flesh. these flies land on the sticky head of the mushroom, which is covered with a sticky goo that contains the spores of the fungus. when the flies leave they spread this goo on all the surfaces they subsequently land upon……
I’d like to ask Howie Kurtz when the Washington Post and the rest of the so-called “liberal media” are gonna obsess about St. Rudy Giuliani’s very messy private life as much as they do about the Clintons. Let’s see…there’s a first marriage that was annulled because he allegedly discovered after 13 years that his wife was his second cousin and not his third. Then, while married to his second wife, he had one affair with an aide, then a second affair with his Judy, who he paraded around in public while his wife and kids were stuck back at the executive mansion.
And of course there’s also St. John McCain’s messy divorce as well.
But none of this will ever be obsessed on by our allegedly scandal-obsessed media…because it’s not a scandal if you’re a Republican.
The Hillary got to where she is because of her husband. It’s HIS machine that gets her to where she wants to go. She wants the road ahead of her paved with assurances of reaching her destination without a bump. She wants to win without running. She doesn’t want to campaign, but prefers a coronation. I’ve had quite enough.
