Is it really bad of me to hope that Malkin gets to Iraq and is kidnapped and held for a month or two? (Not that I want to wish her on the insurgents, who don’t need that form of evil, but she needs the experience of being on the short end for real.)

Yes it is bad to wish that any human being would be kidnapped. Period.

It is human nature to fantasize that bad things will happen to one’s enemies [see Psalm 137], but this is bad for one’s own soul.

If Malkin does go to Iraq I hope she learns what things are really like over there. Her informed and newly educated voice about the horrors there could reach a lot of people on the right. We need to continue to build this coalition, and many of the new people will be from the right.

But I don’t think we should stoop to wishing something terrible for them personally. Hate sin/love sinner.

We need to care about human beings, even in the opposition, maybe especially in the opposition. How do we treat people we disagree with? Gitmo? Or better.

I have read practically all of your posts at Huffpo and lately here. I am concerned that your irony and sarcasm often go over the heads of most of the people who need to hear your message. I know who Malkin is and what she stands for, but your last paragraph:

I understand your point. The folks at FDL are a loving and responsible group. But it would be so hard to be serious all of the time with the world situation the way it is. The irony and humor keep the community going. It is part of who we all are. And sometimes we just plain like being bad.

It may be time for sacrifice, but it ain’t gonna happen. Has anyone here ever participated in a boycott? I worked a little on the grapes boycott and JP Stephens, it is very very very hard. But raw power, money, is the only thing this crowd understands.

Notice the UFCW has never been dumb enough to call for a strike by Walmart workers? Or dumb enough to call for demonstrations? No, they call for a boycott because that hurts Walmart Management without hurting ordinary people. There is a lesson there.

I participate in a boycott of Walmart every time I go to buy something; but, I see your larger point. I would support any effort or means you can devise to get the attention of the big money corporations. And, I don’t mind some due sacrifice. I’m thinking a larger portion of the American population is coming around to that philosophy too. You might be right, it might not be enough just now, but I honestly feel like people are starting to wake from the dream. The run up to 2008 will be telling. I’ll support any effort you devise in the meantime.
