Nine days until Christmas...and Mommy just got dragged away in handcuffs for a bunch of show arrests. Nice.
The shifting rationale for the ICE raids on the Swift Meatpacking plants is making me very peeved. What began as a "raid on illegal immigrants" has morphed into an "identity theft ring" justification in the last 24 hours. Except, the numbers as released thus far, do not hold up for that justification: (H/T to TPMMuck)
Announcing the success of its massive "Operation Wagon Train" yesterday, DHS officials insisted the raids that netted nearly 1,300 arrests were about busting up an identity theft ring. The stats tell a different story.According to DHS' own tally, only 65 of the 1,282 arrests were for criminal violations, including identity-theft related crimes. That means that over 1,200 of the people arrested had no connection to any identity theft rings, and were guilty only of run-of-the-mill immigration violations. That didn't temper the agency's rhetoric.
Of course the DHS didn't temper their rhetoric. Michael Chertoff is, and always has been, about the PR aspects of his job -- the actual DOING of the job being the irritating side thing that he'll get to after the latest presser at some point.
Latina Lista has even more on this, including questions as to why, if identity theft is such a huge priority for the DHS, that college campuses across the nation haven't been raided as well for all those fake IDs.
The Denver Post speculates that these raids are an attempt by the Bush Administration to pressure the incoming Congress to deal with immigration issues early in the term -- guess Bush is desperate to be able to sign something, anything, that gets the GOP back on track with latino voters. Maybe it's just me, but arresting parents and leaving their nursing babies behind is not exactly the way to build good will among any particular community, now is it?
Nice that these families lives get to be ripped apart right before Christmas so that Bushie can put on a good show, isn't it?
And what about those kids left behind when their parents are dragged off without access to counsel for...well, for more than 24 hours now in a number of cases? (Never mind that a lot of these folks likely have English issues and were pressured to sign off on documentation without the advice of legal counsel which will be difficult to revoke now.) Authorities in Texas, at least, appear to think it's not their responsibility to help out:
Late Tuesday in Dallas, agency spokesman Carl Rusnok, asked about delays in getting the workers access to lawyers, said agents at the scene "still have to process the people they have arrested."The union also had located at least 35 children in the nearby communities of Dalhart and Stratford whose parents were in custody. Mr. Rodriguez did not know how many children were stranded in Cactus and Dumas, a city about 15 miles from the plant.
Any of the children born in the United States are U.S. citizens, regardless of their parents' immigration status.
In neighboring Randall County, Sheriff Joel Richardson said he was prepared to hold about 50 federal detainees for up to six months. "I just brought an extra person into booking," he said. "Otherwise, we were ready."
Under a contract, the U.S. government pays the county $47.73 daily for each federal inmate.
Federal agencies hadn't asked Texas officials for help with the workers' children, said Greg Cunningham, a spokesman for Texas Child Protective Services in Amarillo. "It's our understanding that there's a mechanism in place with the federal officials to take care of these types of situations," he said.
So, let's see what we have here: a meat-packing company with a history of skating immigration laws (and allegations of them having some sort of scheme to import illegal workers from Guatamala) skates out of this scot free thus far.
Meanwhile, a mere nine days away from Christmas, these kids get the present of their parents being seized and hauled away, unable to contact them to let them know they are okay -- with no time to make arrangements for their children's care.
And, in one case, a mother who was nursing her child is dragged off and cannot be located, while the child is left to deal with the consequences of being weaned against it's will by governmental agents. Which, as someone who has breastfed a child, is not something that should be done aburptly -- and can have serious health consequences for the child, considering those first few months of breastfeeding provide the best portion of immunity protection and DHA for the child's developing brain. It can be incredibly difficult to get a nursing child to switch to a bottle -- which can result in very adverse health consequences for the baby at a time when nutrition is crucial. Plus, if the mother and child are not reunited, and soon, the mom's milk will dry up -- not exactly an easy, pain-free process, let me tell you, when you have to deal with an abrupt change like this -- and the potential for her being able to even nurse her child after a few days of this goes down substantially. Stress can also have substantial adverse consequences.
Family values party, my ass.
If they were truly concerned with these childrens' welfare, they would have coordinated with local authorities and social services supervisors so that mechanisms were in place for temporary foster care placements and other service implementation, including the mound of paperwork that will now need to be processed to get these kids medical cards, temporary food and clothing assistance and other help -- because they are US citizens and CHILDREN, and ought not be simply left standing outside their homes with no one to care for them. That is unconscionable and yet another example of piss poor planning by the DHS. Heckuva job, Mikey!
Beyond that, though, background checks, priors checks and other considerations will need to be taken into account for adults who are, at least temporarily anyway, caring for these children who have been left behind. The last thing you want is for these kids to be taken in by some seemingly caring adult...who happens to have a long history of pedophelia or violent tendencies or what have you. (Yes, I have been down this road before in abuse and neglect cases...and you do not even want to know what can happen to children in a placement that turns out to be a nightmare.)
That authorities in Texas are saying "Not my problem. The Feds are going to have to deal with this." is frightening -- because the Feds are likely passing the buck right back to the locals. Which means the kids have had to scramble to find an adult to care for them on their own...and that can often lead to the very thing that no child should ever -- EVER -- have to survive.
And that is just for starters. According to the Dallas article, Texas authorities have no idea how many children may actually be stranded and/or affected by this. Well, that's encouraging, isn't it?
I have very little patience for folks who violate the law -- and that includes the meat packing plant which clearly has a "don't ask, just git to work" policy when it comes to its own hiring practices. But it is apparently too much to ask that the Federal authorities at the Department of Homeland Security stop and say to themselves, "Should we make an utter wreck of these children's lives a mere nine days before Christmas without making some provision for these families somehow -- some show of decency and compassion to ease things a bit for all of these children?"
Apparently so.
The next person in the Bush Administration who parades around their compassionate conservative "Christian" values is in for a serious bout of shit from me. Ebenezer Scrooge had nothing on these people.

We need to put a strong SPOTLIGHT on this one, cause so far it’s apparently not getting enough attention outside a handful of papers. Thanks Christy.
Luis has a great post on this at SquareState.net.
I linked to a similar Denver Post article in the last thread, and “Looseheadprop replied with some interesting background on Chertoff. Reposting here . . .
Peterr @ 57
Chertoff tried to use similar tactics when he was investigating and prosecuting banks in NYC’s Chinatown. He exploits people’s ignorance of their rights and uses intimmidation to get them to consent to thinks that they would never be forced to do by a court.
The guy is just walking a bad Karma factory!
Dang, just a hair off. Now off to get a brake job for the long four hour trip to a familily Holiday dinner. Probably saying goodbye to two nephews. 3rd tour for the Marine Sgt. and 1st for the National Guardsman. Four children between the two.. How can they ‘double up’ with out a draft pray tell?

Oh, and Joe Lieberman will be head of the Committee with oversight responsibilities for Chertoff’s gang at Dept of Homeland Insecurity. But we haven’t heard a peep from Joe on this, have we? He’s too busy proposing to send more hispanic troops to Iraq. The war is here.

Great post, Christy!
Peterr at 17 — can you tell the incompetence and lack of compassion in how these children have been “handled” is pissing me off? I spent a professional lifetime working with at-risk kids. This is so painful to watch from the outside.
Peterr, I am sorry, I forgot Christmas is for white folks only. All the brown people who live around me here in South Texas must therefor be part of the war on christmas. I can tell especially by all the lights on their houses and the baby cheeses in the mangers out front.

Rene– I usually add a short note to the recipients. Something like:
Distinguished Journalists:
I’d like to call your attention to an important story about the recent roundup of immigrants by the Department of Homeland Security. Apparently parents have been whisked away by our government, without recourse, and with no thought being given to their children who may not even be able to find out what happened to their parents. This is a tragic situation that requires immediate investigation.
Attached is a story on this by respected blogger, Christy Hardin Smith, of firedoglake, which describes the situation and links to other news articles.
I hope you will look into this matter and inform your readers and viewers.

A pissed off prosecutor is not a good thing, if you are the target of her anger. A pissed off mother is even worse.
But the combination? Priceless.
Go get ‘em, Redd!
I’ve seen this stuff, too, from the outside, but it’s generally been a “one family at a time” thing for me. It is stunning to think how this must be affecting each of the communities where the raids took place, as well as the various towns in Mexico. Fear, anger, confusion . . . and I hope a whole lot of compassion as well.
Holy Crap. I swear,it’s like these idiots sit down and say “ok,how can we handle this situation in the worst way possible? Hmm,that’s a good one Bob,let’s do that then” and off they go.

Something else. No one seems to know how many or where all these kids are. Some could just disappear. Wander off, starve, be abducted.
This is like a natural disaster aftermath. like Katrina. Whre is the the agency that is supposed to cope with …..?
Oh,
nevermind
This debacle reminds me of Katrina. No plan, no long term thinking. In a horrible twisted way, it fulfills the Bushco desire to remove any dependence on government for help/aid. They want churches and charities to step in and take over what the gummit does in other places. Right now that is who is stepping into the breach, just like Katrina. Homeland Security my ass.
It seems to me ICE raids plants where the brown people are getting uppity.
Why don’t I see the plant manager and CEO tossed in the paddy wagon along with the illegal immigrants?
And Christy you are spot on. IF ICE is going to do this, deal with all of the fallout, fergawdsake!
Since I don’t believe, for a moment, the rationale put forward for these raids, I go the next question(s):
How does this feed the base, but more importantly, why now? (after elections, just before Christmas?)
Is it just a shiny object to distract from the ISG Report?
In my neck of the woods the majority of identity theft is committed by meth-heads. Yet, these articles in the paper keep mentioning how various programs to fight the scourge of meth are getting less money because of the Iraq war. Go figure.
What can one do to help those kids? Any social service organizations or churches getting involved in taking care of them?
Gnome de Plume @ 30
yep. But the American people are being worn down trying to provide those things our government has pledged to take care of and those things our tax dollars are supposed to be used for. The American people still abide by the rule of law, for the most part, but our government does not.

The Catholic Church, with its strong ties in the hispanic community, is trying its best. Local priests and parishes, with support from other non-Catholic churches, are no doubt doing all they can to locate and care for these families.
On the larger issue of holding DHS accountable, however, they won’t be able to speak up as effectively. When it comes to anything involving children, the Catholic church lost a lot of moral stature with the way they handled their own child abuse problems.
I really have to go.
This is a cause we can take on people. This is every bit as imporant as standing up for a candidate.
On a more pragmatic note, the fact that they did it at Christmas makes it a very powerful “story” to sell. It’s a freakin Hallmark hall of fame special whcih is why if we frame it right for them and feed it to them like pablum, we can force a lot of MSM coverage of this tragedy.
Yes, tragedy. You know it’s gonna turn out that some toddler has wandered off in the confusion or some infant has been left unattended or disappeared b/c a terrified babysitter who was herself an illegalimmigrant fled in fear.

I for one think the illegal immigration needs to stop, even if it means higher food prices, higher labor costs, and an end to the constantly rising real estate prices and urban sprawl that somehow get spun as desirable growth. (Doing my part for zero population growth, thank you). But this is a perfect opportunity for the Dems to get tough on immigration. They should hold up these sob stories as a good reason to change the focus of inhumane enforcement from the employees to the employers. Huge fines and jail time for offending employers would be a hell of a lot more effective than what we have now. And inhumane enforcement against these union busting slave laborers sounds just peachy to me.
judyinnm at 34 — the articles that I have seen from the communities — and blog articles from local blogs in some of these areas — say that local churches and community groups have been trying to piece together care and housing. But it is being done on the fly and piecemeal — and these folks would not have access to priors/background checks that state or federal authorities would be able to run on individuals who offer housing. That really worries me, because this is just the sort of situation that a child sexual predator could use to their advantage — and you wouldn’t find out about it until far too late, because a child who has lost parents and has no stable housing is the least likely child to report a problem with a current placement. These news reports are going to give me nightmares for weeks now…

right back at you, dmg at 42!
Did I say “slave laborers”? Ooops. I meant enforcement against the slavers was the way to go, not against the laborers. My comment hasn’t posted yet, so maybe that’s the reason.
Arizona officials from the local cop to that “famous” Sheriff Joe have targeted Hispanics, racial profiling them. There have been laws passed by the radical Repug state legislation or proposed where this class of citizens are in the cross hairs of the law.
This year there was 3-4 state wide ballot measures on the Nov 7th ballot that passed. This should be shocking to the rest of the country. One ballot measure clearly would fit this meat packing plant. I am on the road so do not have my usual access but clift notes on this measure would prevent anyone who has questionable immigration status from obtaining a legal award of damages in state court.
So if the undocumented workers were being injured at that meat packing plant and just told to suck it up and live without that arm or fingers. The workers then decide to sue the company for damages, they are prevented from receiving the award if their immigration status is not perfect.
Or the other one which will prevent college grants and student loans to students with questionable status and that could include their parents.

The ICE raids and Chertoff’s presence as Gruppenfuehrer of the action leads me to push once more for a concerted effort to brand the entire neo-conservative political movement and it’s major vehicle of legitimacy, the Republican Party, with the label “fascist”.
I’m not jokin’ here folks…the mass of people in this country spoke loudly and clearly this November. There is a building, palpable anger that needs to be directed and focused. Democrats have a generic lead of 18 points over the fascists in measures of support and confidence of who can solve the problems of the country. The movement toward apartheid must be exposed, ridiculed and used to completely delegitimize the entire fascist establishment.
The administration is goin’ to take greater and greater risks to create diversionary “crises” as their grip on power slips…the Democrats have got to get their elected troops in line and start usin’ the vocabulary of national unity and resistance.
It is now clear that the investigations in both houses of Congress will lead to impeachment…let’s start focusing the people’s anger and fleshing out the devil by using the term “fascist” for every action of this administration and all those associated with implementing their policies.

Fitzgerald Mum on Cheney in Leak Case
WASHINGTON — Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said Thursday that he does not expect any government officials to refuse to testify in the CIA leak trial, but he did not specifically say whether Vice President Dick Cheney or other top White House officials were on his witness list.
Attorneys for Cheney’s former chief of staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, meanwhile, told a judge that two unidentified reporters may resist testifying on Libby’s behalf in the case. The attorneys predicted the issue would be resolved before trial, however. more

Plus, Sy Hersh rates the chance of avoiding war w/Iran at no better than 50/50 - but I think that one’s not comin’ for a while yet.
Maybe you should put some blame on the parents? They knowingly engaged in criminal activity that they could be arrested and deported for at any time. They apparently didn’t care enough to think about what effect that would have on their children. In true liberal fashion, however, you expect the government to care more about children than their parents do.
And if they had done as you asked, no doubt you would be complaining about “THE GOVERNMENT SEIZING CHILDREN JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!”

(Yes, I have been down this road before in abuse and neglect cases…and you do not even want to know what can happen to children in a placement that turns out to be a nightmare.)
I know, which is probably why I am not working as a foster care social worker anymore.
What’s sad is that when you get media attention and outreach from the community, it also puts a burden on these organizations. Becoming a foster parent should be a long process with much training and deliberation on all sides. You can’t place a child in someone’s home without fingerprint and background checks, but so much more is required. It’s not something you can do anything about in the short term(that’s what shelters are for), and people become frustrated when they are told their help, while appreciated, can’t really help.
Same situation for concerned friends, teachers or members of the community who decide that want to be a foster parent for 1 specific child they have interacted with and know is in the system. They don’t understand that agencies truly discourage this, often for compelling reasons. I won’t tell you the stories I have, either. They are beyond tragic.

American Hawk at 55 — Perhaps you should care more about the fact that immigration laws are not being enforced with regard to the companies that make it a habit and practice of incentivizing illegal immigrants to enter into this country in the first place? But then, that would be putting the blame where it rightfully belongs and where the leverage in beginning to solve the problem might actually lie — and would, in turn, cause problems for some of the GOP’s big money donors, then, wouldn’t it? You want to talk hypocrisy — then ask yourself, why has this company — which had raids in several of its plants for the same illegal immigrant labor practices — not been penalized? Try looking past the Limbaugh propaganda for hell’s sakes — and add in some compassion for these kids.
Ah yes, in good fascist fashion, these people are guilty until proven innocent. La Migra and the IRS have always been able to get away with it. I’ve never figured out how or why we let that happen. And that was before 9/11.
Working to feed their children and escape poverty = illegal activity?
Maybe the reason GWB is holding off on his announcement of what he’s gonna do differently in Iraq is that he hasn’t yet found, on his listening tour, anyone who agrees with him?

This is a bit off topic, but it pertains to nursing babies and poverty stricken mothers so…

Remember the false story (propaganda) about Saddam Hussein’s soldiers taking babies out of incubators, and how monstrous that was? That’s what this is like, except it’s true. Sickening, how can those animals live with themselves?

excellent, Dr.!
But, no– Les asked about whether people of other faith should be offended if this Xian preznit sent out a holy Christmas card in his f/u (loosely translated because my head was exploding!)

That’s exactly what Conason says later in the article.
From today’s news…and re #24
“– Of nearly 950,000 people who immigrated to the United States in 2004, 175,000 were from Mexico, 70,000 from India, nearly 58,000 were from the Philippines and 51,000 were from China.
– The largest number of political refugees admitted as permanent residents in 2005 came from Cuba, with 32,555. Bosnia-Herzegovina was second with 13,298, and Ukraine third with 12,421. More political refugees were admitted from Cuba than from all of Asia and the Middle East, which had a total of 32,009.”

So appreciate the head’s up on the Rummy poll Angie! Just the act of a simple unsatisfactory vote is oh so satisfying.
tried to make a cogent comment on the NBC nightly news blog… it’s a little tricky over there - you gotta make some comment relevent to the original topic and then put your issue in and wait for it to be approved…
it takes hours, but they do eventually post them…
just to say so, the connotation to ‘wagon train’ fits with ‘people as cattle’ alluded to above…
But seems totally devoid of any association I can see with ‘id theft’.
just sayin’…

hmmmm.
bingo!
thanks for that; btw, those refugees from war ravaged Afghanistan and Iraq are our problem as we occupy their nations, yet so few are allowed here.
What of Africa and Haiti?
You’re welcome newspaperbrat– sometimes it’s just the little things, eh?

Supposedly, these operation names needn’t have any connection to the objective. That explains why this wasn’t “Operation Bigot Catapult.”
These federal entities are once again arresting the wrong people. Why don’t they do their job and go after the real criminals in this country…ooops …forgot about the rampant nepotism and class/race based justice system in Amerikkka.
I hope the Democrats are thinking about the hard working immigrants struggling to survive in this post-reagan economy as they put their Smith and Hawken baubles on their Xmas tree and lust after idiotically priced handbags and already obsolete electronic products.
OT rant: Holy sh*t - my HMO premium just went up 21% for the coming year!
ID theft my ass. The usual reason for ID theft is to steal. I don’t see any theft here. These immigrant’s theft carries a gift for those whose SSN are “stolen”. I have had a somewhat spotty employment record over the years and if someone wants to pump up my SS account for me, they are welcome to it.
OK, just spotlighted the article to KO…
sorry to hear about the health insurance, punaise… now, just don’t get sick! then you are permanently screwed…

That’s obscene. HMOs are obscene, too. Another brilliant idea from the people who brought you “Shock and Awe.”

No, the secret code names for operations like this are crafted for PR purposes: Enduring Freedom, Desert Storm, etc.

This is par for the course - in the 80s, the U.S. accepted lots of political refugees from Central American countries whose governments we didn’t like. If we were supporting the government in countries where people were being tortured and killed or “disappeaered”, we were not so welcoming.
My premium went up 20%, too and my deductible went skyrocketing from $0 for tests to $750.00… not HMO, though.

yes
MSNBC: Women’s Wear Daily reports fur sales up 15% over last Xmas season. The oligarchy oligarchs on.
I’ve been thinking back to the great federal smackdowns of Enron and Worldcom. Don’t you remember the way the feds swooped in back then and hauled off everyone in the accounting departments and the executive suites, moved them hours away from the jails to which they were initially taken, didn’t worry about granting their attorneys speedy access to their clients, didn’t worry about the rest of their families, etc.?
Nah, I don’t remember it either.
Why don’t they do their job and go after the real criminals in this country…
The *real* criminals in this country have more potent, super-secret, god-like arrest powers that trump the mere mortal, everyday, arrest powers of your basic law enforcement official.
I’m kinda waitin’ on “The Whistleblowers Mandatory Castration Act”.
to be clear -
I am “grateful” to have coverage. too many people don’t / can’t.

Most undocumented workers don’t have their lawyers on speed dial.
Fresh thread, everyone.
Froomkin calls bullshit on Tony Snow in an absolutely priceless column today:
“Snow apologized yesterday to NBC reporter David Gregory, a little over a week after accusing him of framing a question in a “partisan way.”
Gregory had quoted some of the Baker-Hamilton panel’s conclusions, then asked, quite reasonably: “Can this report be seen as anything other than a rejection of this President’s handling of the war?”
Here’s what Snow told Gregory yesterday:
(snip)
“So, in any event, I just want to say I’m sorry for that.”
But the new, chastened Snow lasted about ten minutes.
When Hearst columnist Helen Thomas, who started off grilling him about Iraq and Lebanon, moved on to grilling him about the treatment of detainees, Snow went right back over the line again.
Thomas: “How many people do we have that we have accused and held in confinement in limbo for four years without any trial without any trial, without any charge?”
Snow: “We have provided for the civil rights — notice that you’ve completely jumped off of the topic now of the behavior of the Lebanese. What we are doing is that we have passed a law with regard to the Hamdan legislation that guarantees the civil rights of people who have been pulled off battlefields. We have a reasonable suspicion they’re trying to kill — “
Thomsas: “Four years without a charge or a trial –”
Snow: “Who we have reasonable suspicion to believe have been trying to kill Americans. And I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a bad thing. And I think you do, too.” [ My italics.]
Even Thomas, who has taken more than her share of lumps from Snow, was taken aback.
Thomas: “That’s a lousy way to twist it.”
Snow: “No, it’s not. What has happened is you and I have now been in a series of questions where I’ll answer a question and then the subject changes.”
So changing the subject merits her being accused of thinking that killing Americans is a good thing?
Time for another apology, Tony. And time to stop sliming the messenger. [mc bold]

To PJ at 110…
I think the Democrats here are just as much a part of the problem because they have fed into the right wings paranoid xenophobia about immigration for too long.
And, sorry, but I don’t think the super rich Democratic senators, locked away in their secure mansions this holiday season, are going to do much to answer the needs of the most downtrodden in our society…unless we make them by letting them know that racism and injustice is unacceptable.
Of course the Republicans I do not even consider to be conscious here capable of any nurturing or reasoning abilities which we may take for granted.
why 21%? because Kaiser so say.
OT–The Barack Obama muckraking has already begun. Here’s Slate’s John Dickerson:

It’s a smackdown, folks. Step right up and see how it’s done . . .
Biodun — did Dickerson credit Jane in his reporting? Because Jane hit that almost a month ago now…
The time has come to review the Treaty of Guadalupe under the human rights protocol and to have the highest court of both Mexico and the United States as well as both respective congresses to rightify or reggect this treaty.
If this is redundant, I apologize. But there is hope coming down the pike. Worthington MN (my home state, different district–I wish we could claim him!) is in the district that has just elected Tim Walz as its U.S. Congressman, replacing Bush acolyte, Gil Gutknecht. Tim Walz is a principled man, filled to the brim with integrity. I would be more than surprised if he is not on top of this Swift-meating. No immediate power, but soon. Hang on!!!
This is all about forcing the Democrats’ hands on immigration.
You can only have a serious discussion on immigration in a non-election year, because when votes are at stake, it’s all lowest-common denominator stuff, appealing to a class of people who have either had no contact with USCIS/ICE whatsoever, or minimal contact.
Once the voting’s over, there’s a small window to discuss legislative options and executive action in an informed and un-kneejerking fashion. Looks like someone doesn’t want that to happen.
Does anyone know a place or organization or who to contact to help these families out now that they are out wages and parents? I live in CO and would like to do something rather than just be REALLY pissed off. I also would be happy to write a letter or call somewhere to complain but think helping families immediately is more useful….
I think the timing of the raid was wrong, however I do not think the raid was wrong. I feel very sorry for the children and for the people who are victims of identity theft but it does not change the fact that these illegal parents have knowingly placed their families in jeopardy.
There was no compassion by Homeland Security in the timing of this raid, what the hell ever happen to “Good Will Towards Men”. While the timing was despicable, the enforcing of laws should not be dependant on how well it fits into the lives of the lawbreakers.
Someone upthread mentioned this and I agree, if you love your children, you do not place them in a percarious position. Swift knew well in advance of this raid and “laid off” over 400 people. Some just quit, the ones who remained were taking a terrible chance with their children and families.
I’ll put it this way - it reminded my German boyfriend of a certain unsavory period in his country’s no-so-distant past. The bit about the workers at one plant being sorted by appearance was especially chilling.
The Nazis weren’t just anti-Jew; they were anti-foreigner, in general (unless those foreigners were fellow “Aryans”)
renee @ 131
renee, see Peterr’s comment @ 73 on this thread.
Why didn’t they just cart of the executives and people responsible for hiring all the illegal immigrants at that place? What a pile of crap.
Dave @
137
Exactly. Too many people want to penalize people who are desperate enough to risk their lives to walk across the desert. The assholes who hire them here and guarantee that they can’t get decent (decent here being a relative term) jobs in Mexico should be arrested, not the people they lured here with their hypocritical policies and practices.
A few months ago, some dumbsh*t on the radio here in Phoenix said he was “against illegals” until he needed yardwork done. Then he was in favor until they finished with his yard. That is the craptastic attitude we are dealing with.
Unbelievable! Why cant they just leave the manatees alone?!
jeff nalle @
140
I mean, if they were manatees, the government would do the same thing!
Or, what I really mean is that, if there were manatee meat to be gleaned from the bones of the deported workers, would we stand in the way of a new item at Sizzler’s salad bar?
Never mind.
oh thank you for writing this. this is so unthinkable, it really has me reeling. and i was feeling guilty about not being able to buy expensive christmas gifts for my grown children.
i just hope all those ins, cops, and other “officials” have a nice, warm christmas.
This is nauseating!
As to the 65 with fake ID’s Latina Lista has a really valid point. Colleges are crawling with fake ID’s. However they are extremely expensive. Students used to show me the ad’s in the NYT that advertise “assistance with US paperwork”. It is common knowledge that is code for fake ID’s. A good set runs between $15-$20 thousand. Michael Chertoff is from the NYC area - Am I supposed to believe he just got around to reading the ads in his home town newspaper after all these years and is now shocked! about identity theft?? Oh PUHleeze!
“with the consequences of being weaned against it’s will by governmental agents.”
that is unacceptable in my country.
Excuse me for swearing here, but “fcuk the police”.
The Bush administration taking on a leadership role again. Amazing. Where does the Bush administration think this is going to lead? Do they think the Latino community is going to take these terrorizing actions against their community sitting down? Has the administration looked at what’s going on in Latin America lately. Lots and lots of protests.
Here’s another story, also from Amarillo. A friend who has two daughters, ages 8 and 10 I think, had been divorced for about 5 years at the time this occured. Her ex-husband and father of the girls commited a fairly serious crime. She was private about the nature of his crime so I don’t know what he was accused of doing. He had not been convicted of any crime at this point, just indicted. He paid child supprt and was allowed visitation rights prior to arrest. After his arrest, CPS took her daughters away from her to protect them from their non-convicted father. He rarely saw the girls any way and she wouldn’t have let him take them after the indictment. It took her 4 months to get her children back. Luckily her parents were registered foster parents and allowed to take the girls in. Without that bit of luck however, this woman who is a wonderful loving mom would have not been allowed to see nor speak to her children for 4 months. They would have been sent to live with strangers. Her parents weren’t supposed to let her see the girls at all. They did, but it was illegal every time. All of this to “protect” the children.
We have allowed our collective judgement to fail.
She now has her children back and the ex was sent to jail for a very long time. A happy ending luckily. But for most anyone else in her situation this could have been the nightmare to end all nightmares. She didn’t do anything wrong. Most importantly, neither did her two wonderful little girls.
Reality check: There were a 65 identity thieves. The rest of the 1300 might be illegal workers, but they might not. Homeland Security does not have to prove anything about anything in order to put a non-citizen in jail without access to an attorney. I’d wager that more than half of those picked up were not guilty of anything more than “working while being brown”–not even “being illegal workers.”
1. Why not? Although I readily admit that I could be wrong, I’d bet that at least some of those identity thieves did nothing more than get false documents showing them to be citizens or permanent residents when they were not, so that they could get a job that paid well (by their standards). If they were working at a meat packing plant, they obviously were not stealing tons of cash. What would it have hurt to do this on January 2?
2. Again: being held incommunicado by Homeland Security does not imply guilt. The assumption of innocence no longer applies to non-citizens.
Where are you getting that information? Yes, Swift knew about the raid in advance, but if you are talking about the lay off scheduled for December 20, it has not happened yet and is attributed to the loss of a contract.
