Power went out on the Oregon coast last night so I've had to do my blogging from Starbucks. I ran across this at Pam's House Blend which makes me feel that this is an appropriate place for Kobe to be frequenting for his pumpkin loaf:
Without question, one of the largest American corporate promoters of the anti-family, radicalized homosexual agenda, continues to be coffee giant Starbucks. While children were forced to watch degrading images of male prostitutes, pornographers and other deviant participants in this year's 2006 San Diego Gay Pride Parade, Starbucks was sponsoring this hellish event to make sure that it was well-funded. -- CaliTaliban "former homosexual" activist James Hartline, calling for Christians to stop the homosexual-supporting coffee juggernaut

I stand convicted. I think I am a radical do-gooder. At least I hope so.
ROOTZ!
yum! love me some Starbucks!
need to go buy several hundred pounds of their Christmas blend…
makes me want to go to starbucks more
try panera bread next time, free refills, more to gnash (spelling?)

I had toooo much coffee the other day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_WyObcPV_0

shrub wants to be baseball commisioner.
too bad they didn’t get the jobs they really wanted.
I’m not fussy about their coffee, but the hot chocolate is quite good. *grins*
I happen to work for another company that allows benefits and rights to same sex partners. hehe. RiteAid is rather ghetto, but it didn’t get that part wrong. Corporate is a pain in the ass like any company, of course. It’s one reason why i don’t mind things, and the job is tolerable for the most part.
We need more companies to do this on a wider scale, really do. It would make things more commonplace and harder for the neocons to be such asses about it being ‘different’.
b..b…bu..but I thought Starbucks was evil…

I look at Pam’s everyday. It’s not just the gay struggle (I’m straight) that intrigues. It’s that the ‘gay-struggle’ portends many of the struggles and values I hold dear and that pique my interest and sympathy. Gay issues cut across many, many issues.
Well, in You’ve Got Mail, doesn’t the Tom Hanks character define Starbucks as the place where people can establish their defining sense of self? Tall, decaf, mocha etc.
Oh, damn… I’ve never been willing to spend that much for a cuppa joe, but now maybe I’ll have to start. Anything to support “teh gay agenda.” I’m not good with languages, though. Do I really have to learn Starbucks to order???
Tooooo much coffee will make you old before your time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjd1Tdw3z7U

My daughter once worked at a Starbucks during college days, and she said you can just ask for a plain coffee, and you’ll get it.
perris @ 12
Which is why i rarely get it in the first place. It’s a treat now and then though. If i’d bothered trying their teas, i might actually go there more often.
Hey Jane, take care in the typhoonlike conditions on the coast. ABC Nightly News gave us a taste of what you’re dealing with.
Just in case this was EPUed on the last thread:
Will make it a point to stop for a Starbucks coffee next time and every time I’m in the local B&N. Will ask for the Mary Cheney special.
Toooo much coffee and you start doing things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqDAf_lg9Xs
scarecrow @ 19
Oh, thank heaven. We actually have a Starbucks outpost at the hospital where I work. And I’m sure it’s better than what the office coffee makers come up with!
Jane — if you’re there, did you get the note from CT Bob about the advance showing of “Blog Wars”? Early next week.
Dunkin’ Donuts is evil– the Carlyle Group owns it.
I will enjoy sipping my coffee at Starbucks much more from now on… thanks, Jane.
Isn’t Starbucks’ symbol some sort of Satanic pagan transgendered wiccan?
coffeewise, I’m a Peet’s guy; a Starbucks relativist (it’ll do in the absence of better options).
While it’s good to hear that Starbucks is a responsible, progressive corporate citizen on the human resources side, they have a lot to answer for in terms of predatory real estate practices in small town USA…contributing to the growth of Generica.
That said, finding a Starbucks while driving across the San Joaquin Valley is a good thing, and I’m glad they provided a safe blogging haven for Jane.
My daughter once worked at a Starbucks during college days, and she said you can just ask for a plain coffee, and you’ll get it.
That trick also works well at truck stops.

I am not a coffee person. I like the taste, lots of cream and sugar though. I’m a tea man.
My cousin (she’s a major coffee consumer) advises that Starbucks is toooo strong.

Oh, no! I’m sorry to hear that. : (
Well, at least there’s always Starbucks…
Oh, and thanks for reminding me about Starbucks being friendly toward queer people…
It gives me another reason not to feel so guilty when I have to go to Starbucks for my caffeine fix. ; )
Oh. Crap. Bush did something I can’t hate him for. PHOOEY. He gave Buck O’Neal the Medal of Freedom.
No, wait, I CAN still hate him. Why on earth did he put that sweet man in that terrible company?
You know, I’m having a proud moment that today I had a grande peppermint mocha. Boo-yah.
May go and get one tomorrow as well.

This whole business of Laura saying Condi won’t run “because she’s single” is really dog-whistle code-speak, IMO.
There are all sorts of rumors about Condi being gay (the truth of which I have absolutely no idea, and I certainly don’t care — her orientation has no bearing on my despising her for her fascism-enabling and gross incompetence).
Here in Arizona we have an excellent (Dem) governor named Janet Napolitano. Whenever the local media pundits speculate aloud about her chances of holding national office, somebody always brings up “well, she’s…single” and you practically see the wink and nod.
Maybe Laura’s dog-whistle comment is meant to somewhat appease her husband’s earlier statement today about Mary Cheney’s pregnancy, framed in positive terms, sure to piss off the fundies.
He could have given Buck the medal last year when he was still ALIVE.
(or any of the other years he’s been in office.)
punaise,
Morford is wonderful — probably the closest thing to a mainstream Rude Pundit we could hope to get. A few years back he actually kept pinging stuff off his readers in the e-newsletter like some kind of offline blog thing, and it was amazing — he’d respond to hatemail, quote readers’ suggestions etc. Above all, he’s a great writer who does his part to further teh Agenda. His slogan: “there’s no such thing as too much lube” pretty much sums it up.
Mrs. K8 @ 44
IAOKIYAR….
Starbucks has printed a Jonah Goldberg quote on their cups.
‘The Way I See It’
They’re never going to please these haters.
Here’s a question for Starbucks regulars –
do they sell low-acid coffee, by any chance?
We buy low-acid coffee for consumption at home, and it’s something we initially had to go out of our way to find.
And if you’re taking a poll, cream for me (sometimes EXTRA cream), but never, ever, every any sugar or sweetness of any sort. And NONE of those fancy “flavorings” for either of us. Just simple folk here.
More caffeine induced activities: http://www.eepybird.com/exp214.html
Not a coffee person either, but standing up to the intolerant folks earns my respect.
Totally different subject, but I just discovered that there’s a company that makes duck diapers. Who knew?
Actually, it may not be that far off topic, because, as I recall, ducks hardly subscribe to traditional values in their mating behavior.
Starbucks is the Borg! But it is nice to know that it is consistant. And the pumpkin scones are also good, though sometimes I have to take the frosting off… so swweeet…
Mrs. K8 @ 44
Hey, I just got back from your (VERY BEAUTIFUL) state. While my dad and I had the local NPR on in our car, they spoke about Napolitano’s proposal on housing…
Interesting stuff…
It’s too bad that the media’s poo-poo-ing her as Presidential material…
She sounds a lot better to me than THAT SENATOR FROM NEW YORK who wants to go to the White House in ‘09.

Yup, that acronym covers a multitude of different “sins.”
BTW — I left you a very brief compliment downthread concerning your #101 comment on “bipartisanship.” No need to look, it was just a tip of the hat to say I thought you summed up the situation perfectly.

Yes, I second that emotion! I would rather have Janet as prez than you-know-who any day.
I’m glad you enjoyed your stay in Arizona! There’s lots of interesting stuff here. Although I’m a Northeastern girl at heart, always was, always will be. I’d much rather have just VISITED here than moved here, but then I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth — Mr. K8 has a great job with a boss we both like and respect a whole lot, and his boss likes him a lot too and wants him to stay at the company forever. So I should never, ever complain!
Mrs. K8 @ 54
I think I left another, later, which should have been even clearer. Respect is earned. Have these corrupt, nasty, ethically-challenged, proto-fascists genuinely earned any respect?
If so, coulda fooled me. :)

Have you seen this Dunkin Donuts stabFritalian
I was all pissy about Starbucks till I saw the 60 Minutes with the owner. He thinks it’s pretty funny that people will pay what they do for all these goofy drinks. He also seems pretty responsible socially what with health insurance for his workers and paying more than market to his suppliers.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 59
Thanks, Christy, for the inside info! At least I know not to order coffee there, oh well.
BTW — what’s Tazo tea? Is that something low-acid?
It truly is an owie, Christy.
I give KO all the credit for alerting me to the news!

We just got a Starbucks here. Of course I asked, “Where’s the pumpkin bread?” They were out!
Coffee is good for you, it’s medicinal.
Their chai tea is even better. Star anise, pepper, mmm.
I always like stuff strong. Like martinis. And single malt scotch, on the rocks. When I smoked, I smoked Marlboro 100s-the cowboy killers. I like Starbucks because their coffee is way strong. I’ve tried many a coffee shop, and most of them are way too wimpy, even with espresso put in.
Peter King, an awesome NFL writer for Sports Illustrated, writes a column every week called “Monday Morning Quarterback” and he always gives a shout-out to coffee junkies:

punaise @ 72
Given Kerik’s economic uncertainty, I certainly hope they aren’t in the habit of dropping periods.
Mrs. K8 at 70 — Tazo is a brand of tea. Their chai tea is pretty good — it’s a nice, hot cup of tea with a shortbread cookie, if you like that sort of thing. I also like the Starbucks Tazo chai lattes (with a shot of vanilla) — but they are a bit sugary, so if you don’t like sweet drinks, it probably wouldn’t be your fave.

I think that latter comment is the one I mean (unless you just went back below and scribbled some more in the last few minutes).
In any event, I heartily endorse and salute your sentiments, no matter which comment you expressed them in. Wingnuts whining for “bipartisanship” now is the scam of the playground bully — even worse, it’s the con of the abusive spouse. Ain’t gonna fly.
Mrs. K8 @ 61
Well, I’m a California beach bum… Always was, always am, and probably always will be. Still, I just LOVE the scenery in Arizona. We stayed in Northern Arizona for most of our visit, and I just taken back by the amazing scenery. Sedona was drop dead gorgeous, Jerome was fun, and Flagstaff was cool (Literally, 50 degrees was the high!). The only bad part of the trip was the pollution advisory in Phoenix when we had to drive back to the airport.
Oh yes, and as I hinted at earlier, if your Governor decides to seek higher office anytime in the near future, she can count me in as a supporter. ; )

I like strong coffee too. When I moved back from my first stretch of living in Europe, my first sip of American coffee — after having had deep dark Euro coffee for so long — made me spew, and not in a good ha-ha-FDL-makes-me-LOL kinda way.

Well, we have something in common, but with a slight difference.
I’m a JERSEY beach bum. I sooooo miss swimming in the ocean every single summer. Sigh. While some folks (like Mr. K8) favor mountains and forests, I’m made instantly happy by the ocean.
When we were home visiting last April after a work conference, we got a freebie to stay in a casino hotel on the Atlantic City boardwalk (neither of us likes gambling, but it was luxury room freebie gift from a relative, with a view of the ocean). We spent the day walking the beach — and Mr. K8 took short clips of video on our digital camera which now sit proudly on the computer for me to play whenever I get homesick for the sound and sight of the waves and seagulls.
Oops, sorry for the lengthy reverie there. Maybe it’s time to go play that video clip again….

Bravo, Salon and Mr. Sidarth!
No sock juice for me thanks, I want to spoon to stand up in the cup!
Completely OfT, hey Christy, if you ever get a chance, I was surprised the Ethics Committee didn’t appear to consider Federal Sexual Harrassment laws wrt Foley. I have to believe that there are significant Federal rules governing appropiate communication between supervisors
Foleyand Federal employees,Pages,as well as numerous laws and regulations controlling the investigation of such conduct byFoley’sthe supervisor’s supervisorHastert, Boehner, Reynolds…, when s/he becomes aware of it. The fact that none of the Republican leaders ever documented anything would appear to be a significant departure from those regs.Toooo much coffee? http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gm.....zen_1.html

While you’re at it, vote for star-sailor in the best of the 251-500 category. The category is 100% wingnut (as far as I can tell), but star-sailor is unique in that it is an Italian language site, and its Merican version comes via Google Translator, so it is even less comprehensible in English.

Starbuck’s pays its employees (even part-timers) benefits. Which is how they manage to get ‘overqualified’ people to become baristas and build a world-class company. Starbuck’s is about as socially responsible an employer as one will find in the US.
Starbuck’s corporate philanthropy puts a great deal of money into parks and playfields. I know of one city that was able to improve and update a park used by toddlers and their families ONLY because the city received a park grant from Starbuck’s. Without the Starbuck’s grant money, the city couldn’t afford the upgrades — and the families and kids wouldn’t have the play area they need.
One of my family members was instrumental in getting that particular park built, and it’s the pride of the local community. Starbuck’s money was well spent.
Pam, whoever she is, should stop spewing malicious insults. She’s being socially irresponsible.
When Pam provides medical benefits, park enhancements, nutrition, meeting spots, and music to millions of Americans, maybe I’ll pay attention to what she says.
In the meantime, it’s FDL cuppa Bracing Honesty, plus Starbuck’s teas (blacks & herbals) for this ‘reader.’
She’s gay. Gwen Ifill is her S.O. Somerby blew the whistle on this over a year ago.
Their corporate logo is a naked mermaid. I don’t think it’s Wiccan — I think it’s a reference back to “Moby Dick” (source of the word “Starbuck”).
BTW, for those of you under 40, you have no idea how grateful you should be for Starbuck’s. Before Starbuck’s, it was very difficult to find a cup of strong (i.e. properly brewed) coffee anywhere. You could get espresso, or warm brown water. I’m sure that one reason Starbuck’s rise has been correlated with additional coffee consumption by Dunkin’ Donuts, IHOP, Denny’s, etc. is that they’re using more coffee beans per cup. Thanks to Starbuck’s.
