I just can't understand the silence coming from Hilllary Clinton and Joe Lieberman, those self-appointed guardians of public morality, who up until now have spared no effort to save us from the socially corrosive effects of violent video games. We know how dangerous these games can be because Focus on the Family says so, citing research which finds that frequent video game players suffer from "an increase in emotional arousal, and a decrease of activity in the area of the brain involved in self-control."
The horror.
But as Bruce Wilson at Talk to Action tells us, Focus on the Family -- who can normally be relied upon to tell us all where we should and shouldn't put our joysticks -- is dropping the ball when it comes to the Left Behind Video Game:
Outbreaks of self contradiction and moral relativism, or perhaps moral atrophy, continue at the powerful "family values" organization Focus On The Family. First came Vice President Tom Minnery's surprising concern - "I fear that we're in a society in which you will be held to the standards which you claim." (see full story). Now, a Focus On The Family website has both enthusiastically endorsed a video game - that lets players command forces to convert to fundamentalist Christianity or kill all the residents of New York - as "the kind of game that Mom and Dad can actually play with Junior" and highlighted findings from researchers at the Indiana State School Of Medicine indicating frequent playing of violent video games can cause parts of children's brains to atrophy.
Heaven help us all. As Wired Magazine noted, the overall effect of this Islamofacist kill-fest puts one in something other than a spiritual frame of mind:
In the thick of a really hectic Left Behind battle, I'd click the prayer button so instinctually that I pretty much forgot I was, well, praying.
Since we now have a President whose desire to measure wartime success by body count is indicative of someone who has probably spent more time playing Ultimate Doom than reading French existential literature (despite protestations to the contrary), I think we can all see the potential danger here. Which is why it is such a shock that WalMart, who wouldn't carry John Stewart's America: The Book because John Paul Stevens' dong was too long, ignores continued cries to stop peddling religious violence for Christmas.
As a former member of WalMart's board , Hillary Clinton is in a particularly good position to get the ears of those who could save the children and stop the madness. We await her critical forray into this terrible, terrible problem.

Jane, Stays Dry!
I think James Dobson was Left Behind when God handed out the brains.
Good luck Jane. 70 mph gusts coming.
I’m going to venture out into this mess and head for the bar(n). Hopefully everything will be oky doky.
Y’know, I’d give anything to live in a society where the most pressing issue was violent video games.
Power out, winds gusting, poodles eating organic dinner by oil lamp. I’m chewing Starbursts and blogging by Treo.
We are an even bigger site gag than usual.
Hopefully, Time will leave Dobson and FOF behind.
Whatcha waiting for, Hillary? Whatsamatter, you scared of saying anything against the Christianists?
Oh,and as for the most blatant show of hypocracy, the folks at Focus on the Family can pretty much kiss my ass.
…on a wingnut and a prayer…
“Come in” we said
“We’ll give you shelter from the storm”.
Americablog has been keeping track of the responses of the researchers whose work Dobson lifted and twisted in that Time column bashing gays.
I’m so glad you’ve picked this up Jane. It is so Joe and Hillary to do a photo op for violent video games when the real violence is so pressing and then NO FOLLOW THROUGH when this OBVIOUSLY violent video game ONCE AGAIN makes the news. WTF?!!! What is with the MSM? To me this is the kind of juicy question that needs to dog these two the next few weeks… but sadly no takers except those dirty hippies in the blogosphere… sigh…
Starbursts are great– I especially like the sour ones.
(Beats grinding my teeth away, although I have ground them for so long *everytime a thug is in office* that I am very careful when chewing candy!)
Senator Clinton, get with it!
punaise 8 — I’m gonna use that one.
Neither she nor Lieberman will do anything about this particular video game, because they approve of the message.
I believe that and will until I hear and see different– and that ain’t gonna happen.
If they speak out, it’ll be too little, too late.
“…on a wingnut and a prayer…”
LMAO.
It’s the sheer speed with which you come up with these, among other things, such as the rich, multi-layered meanings.
I am ____ with Senator Clinton. The Senator let me down. But far, far more importantly, she let the people down.
Jane, you should look into getting a generator for your home. They come in so handy during storms.
Repeat for the new thread:
LIBBY TRIAL TIMING UPDATE for the information of Jane and Christy, et al:
This is from a Status Report filed today by the government, as requested by the Judge on 12/11. With the known CIPA/graymail issues now behind them, things are getting back on track toward the trial start-date. The government makes clear in this filing that they are refocused on meeting the Judge’s set schedule for the Libby trial. Any delay after this point should be quite minor.
In sum: The Libby trial is now set to start on time, on January 16, 2007, post-6(c) government victory, and post-6(a) government appeal voluntary dismissal.
Jane: You’re good to go… [Meanwhile, stay safe out there in the wilds of the west coast, along with bustednuckles and everyone else in the way of the wind.]
Suzanne @ 18
Heck, what’s the fun of living on the Oregon coast, if you can’t enjoy a nice power-outage with 90 mile an hour winds, once in a while?
Here’s another tune for you, Jane.

When I was a kid (before video games) we would spend the entire day wandering the country with real guns, shooting anything. Farmers would buy cases of shotgun shells for us as long as we would shoot birds in order to keep them out of rice fields.
Video games with guns just look like an (slow) improvement to me.
John Casper @ 16
punaise’s best efforts can be astounding.
Hillary is ‘locking it up’. For ‘08. And I so very do not like it.
Thanks pow wow!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 24
that’s what they say.
I refuse.
Someone should tip off Barack Obama that he should get behind the anti-Left Behind Video Game movement that Sen. Clinton is foolishly avoiding.
Or would that clash with the perception he is trying to create, that he is a person of “faith”?
The impression is I am being held hostage by my (Dems) own party.
angie @ 26
;)
I think Hillary should come square out against Martin Scorcese for what was it called, The Departed?. Resevoir Dogs II. Over the top, but i liked that the screenwriter made every act of violence righteous.
Still i think you should go back downstairs to examine the way out.
From Chris Cilizza’s chat yesterday at wapoo.
the follow up I had submitted was not taken.

Well. ya can plunk down $40 or whatever for “San Andreas Megachurch” and the Scripture Thumpin’ Yahoos will make a mint of of it. Such things come and go.
But years from now, your grandchildren will tell this story to THEIR grandchildren, and I’m giving it away for free. You’ll never find this in WalMart. I promise.
The Gift
So far the two worth watching. Any good referece material on the tubes about Kucinich?
Hi Subway Serenade and thank you.
Hope you are feeling very well now and get to enjoy a wonderful time with your family and friends this holiday season.

Progressives, or Liberals if you will, ‘are’ the Democratic base. Senator Hillary Clinton is a victim of her own vanity. This once admirable and proud woman cannot see the forest (progressives and liberals (us)) for the trees (finger in the political wind). I am pro-choice in every sense of the word. I will not stand for Ms. Clinton being stuffed down my wind pipe.
Who says Hillary has it locked up for ‘08? Edwards is 20 points ahead of her in Iowa, and a poll by the LA Times shows Gore with a 74% approval rating by fellow Democrats to Hillary’s 79%, a virtual deadheat since the polls are using or - 4pts. these days instead of 3. And they can’t throw it back to us and say that Gore hasn’t declared yet because, technically, neither has Hilllary.
1,362 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Jeezus H. ceeRIST on a fuckin’ crutch…we are doomed as an acceptable member of human society! Where the hell are the mainstream churches on this shit….they should be on it like stink on bad stuff!!! When mainstream churches have the balls to stand up to the religious whackos and crypto-Christians, their pews will fill up and crime will go down and the fascist movement will be left to the corporate mercenaries for their foot soldiers.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, AT LEAST ONE OF ‘EM LIVES ON YOUR BLOCK!!!
Await Hillary? To do something? The Senator is consumed with one thing. Being prez. How weird.
IOKIGTYTDI
It’s ok if god told you to do it.
All right! Here it is. My choice for ‘08. Hillary! For Senator from NY.
Thanks pow wow, that helps me out a lot.
Onward to DC…
Oklahoma kiddo @ 38
Too many of the declared or likely contenders in both parties have little to offer besides their obsessions with getting the job. McCain, Giuliani, Brownback, Romney, Clinton…how do any of these people intend to distance themselves for their rah-rah support for Bush’s most self-destructive policies? Kerry? He had a chance, he blew it as far as I’m concerned. Edwards and Kucinich are a little more unspoiled. I’d vote for Vilsack, because I think his biggest problem in Iowa has been the GOP-dominated legislature trying to follow the lead of its Washington counterparts…but I won’t claim to be energized about his candidacy.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 40
Too bad she already won that election this year…despite the absolute transparency of her desire to jump ship for the White House.
EvilDrPuma @ 43
Maybe in 2008 it will be time to resurrect an old political slogan from 1972…
“FOUR MORE YEARS!”
(for Clinton to serve as senator from New York).
I am beginning the sense the suffocating stench from my own Democratic party.
neurophius @ 44
Heh. Or maybe the 1996 Cthulhu slogan–”NO MORE YEARS!” (For Clintons in the Oval Office.)

It’s cold and overcast but no sign of heavy rains & high winds off the central CA coast at least here on the south end of Monterey Bay though still soggy from the weekend deluges of cold rain.
Jane, what a picture you conjured up-thread of Kobe dining by oil-lamp light.
Time to rally the troops. The troops are us.
Watching Keith Olbermann, it occurs to me that he should do a segment on the Left Behind Video Game.
One possibility would be to present the Worse, Worser, and Worst Person In The World awards to Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman and James Dobson (not necessarily in that order) for their active or passive support of the game.
Maybe Kurtz survived after all, and went on to design wingnut video games?
EvilDrPuma @ 46
Was Lovecraft alive in 1996? Surely not. He must have died young, as an invalid in the 50’s. What is the 1996 reference?
AirportCat @ 50
Or Dunwich
The buzzards were hovering. Over Sen. Johnson.
Or Pope Alexander II.
neurophius @ 49
I like it.
My favorite new piece of Apocalypse Now trivia:
The original script by John Milius climaxes with Kurtz fighting off an attack by U.S. Army airmobile helicopters, firing a machine gun, while exclaiming to Willard “I can feel the power in my loins!” Coppola thought this was absurd.
-GSD
Stop the war. And it’s one, two, three, what are we fightin’ for?
GSD @ 56
Have you ever scene the documentary by Coppola’s wife, Hearts of Darkness? It’s a fascinating look at the making of that movie. The old Pole would probably approve of the suffering necessary for the art.
Buchanan on Scarborough: “Why don’t we give up the Empire? Why should we be defending Korea and other places around the world when the Cold War is over?”
Re the question of do we have enough troops for fighting all around the world. I can’t believe I am agreeing with Buchanan but there you have it
GSD,have you seen “Hearts of Darkness?” Well worth it if you can track it down. Apocalypse Now is one of my all time favorite films, turned me on to the Doors and got me interested in Vietnam.
Maybe what the Xtianists need is a version of Leisure Suit Larry, where at the end of the game (depending on your score … how many temptations you succumb to, how many commandments you break, etc.) you either go to heaven or wind up in one of Dante’s nine circles.
I am feeling sad that people are so unable to connect with each other. Gaining power by killing others far away. Saving face by refusing to admit that we might be one tiny bit at fault. Collateral damage = dead children. I spend my days trying to save the lives of children and my nights trying to persuade others to act to prevent the deaths of children in our various wars.
Is there a higher way? Not my way or the highway? Can we find some common ground, United Nations, grace and forgiveness, looking at oneself in the mirror and seeing humanity, looking at humanity and seeking forgiveness and justice?
We must try something new, tentative, fragile, and tender. We must SEE each other and try to love each other. Across the continents. Across the room. We are on the verge of seriously messing up the American experiment. Let’s try the new way.
angie @ 54
Dante Alighieri?
Lovecraft would have found a lot of new material in this administration.
Speaking of horror stories.
egregious @ 64
Aye, real horrorshow, no fun to viddy.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 63
I like and have read Dante; not so much the first Pope who did this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusades
Now we got King George and the (every brown person) left behind folks, et al doing the same ole thing.
Is that what you were asking?
I want the killing to cease. I want our soldiers home.
angie @ 66
Yes. Gold star angie. Again.
Dante. ;OK.)
Assuming little gets done to restore the Constitution in the next two years (the Deciderator wields the veto pen, plus I’m not sure the entire Congress has the brass), it’s gonna be a bad day in Black Rock if Hils assumes the reins of absolute power.
There are three reasons the Repugs and the media are touting her.
1. She’ll turn out their base, causing
2. Record campaign contributions, and
3. At heart, she’s one of them. She sat on WalMart’s board, plus she was a leading attorney for a union-busting, pro-corporate law firm. She voted for and supports the war, and voted for the BK bill. She supports ‘free trade.’
Does that strike anyone as remotely progressive?
Hilary also used to sit on the board of LaFarge, a really nasty cement producing company that has been busted repeatedly for environmental compliance violations. We had a huge battle with the cement industry here in the Hudson Valley of NY a few years ago, and our Senator Clinton wouldn’t lift a finger to help. We won, but no thanks to Hilary.
global yokel @ 70
That’s disgusting. I’m picturing the beautiful vistas of Thomas Cole debauched and ruined by industrial waste. There’s not much I’ve actually admired about the woman, ever; but, now there are things about her that I particularly detest.
The wingnuts want Hillary to be the nominee in 2008 because they are certain they can beat her. They are likely correct.
With Obama, as far as I’m concerned, he’s a case of what have you done for us ever? It’s a serious question. So maybe he’s a good guy, charismatic, intelligent, but what has he done?
Anybody who really wants the job is automatically suspect in my view … which is another reason I like Feingold. He’s not running, but who better?
Al Gore.
angie @ 73
Yes.
What angie said. More Gore. Please.
BTW, no bloodbath after all tonight. The subject caught the clue-by-four, rolled over and played dead. I guess I missed the drama afterwords with the ode-to-Ophelia farewell speech and subsequent swan song.
So…for the first time ever in this locale, a party board seated by netroots activists, consisting of a broad spectrum of folks who actually represent the constituents.
Damn, that first victory beer tasted great.
AirportCat @ 72
I’d vote for Russ in a new york minute, particularly given the way the options are stacking up.
AirportCat @ 72
There are, it is felt here, a variety of reasons for why Senator Clinton should not be nominated as the Democratic candidate for president in 2008. Your reason is exact and correct. The other reasons might be that we have so much talent in our party.
May I suggest, among others, Al Gore would meet the test of electability and forthrightness on Iraq, the environment and other crucial issues? Your view meshes with mine. ;)
Ahmet Ertegun, RIP:

There’s nothing like some Wolcott.
Al Gore is a good guy, but he’s about as exciting as oatmeal. And I can’t say I care much for Tipper … I remember the PMRC (Parents’ Music Resource Coalition… and wasn’t Zappa magnmificent in those hearings?).
Angie, the money quote from that article:
Turki was charting a more realist course for Saudi interests and advising the White House to develop more serious, constructive strategies toward the region that would produce stability and not lead to “a terrorist super-highway stretching from Iran through Iraq and rushing through Syria and Jordan to the edge of Israel.”
As long as Halliburton sets up a toll booth, Dick Cheney is fine with the new construction project.

Well, maybe so, maybe no. My guess is they’re too busy triangulating and worrying about alienating the people who think it’s cool to “play” this “game.” As far as I’m concerned, any game, any game whatsoever, that is based and premised on killing “the other side” is odious. Or, to use a word that Bobby Kennedy used to great effect, it is “unacceptable.”
Gore will do the job. What a delicious prospect. President Gore.
AirportCat @ 83
Have you heard him roar lately?
I really can’t take any more excitement anyway… smart, engaged, capable, smart, well-spoken, able to choose smart and capable advisors– I am done.
Plus, Jimmy Carter wants him for President, too.

I wonder if Israel will survive? I hope so, but I wonder if it will make it through this next phase intact.
Patrick 4/4 @ 85
Oh, yeah. Snork! Leisure Suit Larry was SUCH A SINNER!!! I think this may cut quite close to the heart of the issue. Why do these people want to “win” by killing? Why don’t they set up a game where they win by being Christ-like?
Oh, well, then they’d have to consort with icky people like hookers and tax collectors and sick people and prisoners and… {Emily Latella voice} Oh. Never mind…
President Carter wants Gore? Well that does it! Gore for president!
GSD @ 89
LOL.
Hey, I have a great idea for a video game…how about a cool progressive character running around spraying Republicans with Truth? A direct hit will cause their heads to explode like “Dawn of the Dead.”
I’m still not convinced that Al Gore is Presidential material — and like it or not, the spouse seems to be part of the package, and the First Lady can be influential — but he would be a great cabinet member, maybe Sect’y of Interior or Energy?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 87
Okay. Question here. Let’s say he runs, and he wins. Can he run again in 2012, seeing as he already won once before 2008? Where does the Constitution stand on this???

Oakland A’s! My guys!!!
Cliff Varnell @ 7:22/97 — I think you’re absolutely right that she should be terrified of “Da Blogs.” She has the full, complete skill set to be a Senator. She should stick to her knitting there, and with a Dem at 1600 in 2008 her influence in the Senate will grow. I think she can be an effective Senator if she gets it through her head that 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is NOT in her future. NOT EVER. And if the Democratic Party is moronic enough to nominate her I am no longer a Democrat.

As far as exposing our kids to violence, how about this.
Yesterday I picked up my mother-in-law at the airport and was waiting at the international arrivals area. CNN airport was on. Not just with subtitles, but with full volume, so you could not block it out even if you wanted to. The Situation Room was on. And while I appreciate that it was not FOX News, and I snickered at the occasional reference to Bush as a lame duck and incompetent, etc. — words to which some people in attendance had never really had to endure — there were also reports of body counts (5,900 kill or captured last month), a story on the Ipswich Ripper, and finally promos for some Court TV Nancy Disgrace coverage of a murder case in Savannah. All while many families were also waiting for international arrivals with young children.
The volume as not up as a public service, but to sell advertising. It was about money and children were needlessly exposed to violent images and casual banter extolling the killing of thousands. Even if these were “bad guys” that were killed, that point is lost on children. They only get the point that the president says such large scale killing is OK.
