Identity fraud is serious crime. Entering the U.S. illegally is serious crime. Employing workers who are in the country illegally is serious crime. Wage earners in this country are seriously hurt by these crimes every day and the scale of the crimes has been accelerating for three decades.

Children are victims, too, when their parents commit crimes. We must be sure the children are safe and properly treated. If law enforcement personnel have abused the children, corrective action should be take.

But we really must do something about the underlying crimes, including those aggressively going after the employers who knowingly let the situation fester and, in my opinion, encourage it.

Absolutely true! It’s tragic that parents are hauled off without a chance to retrieve their children, but the initial crime was committed when they entered this country illegally, and subsequent crimes were committed when they were hired as illegal immigrants. We MUST get control of our borders and simultaneously must come up with a new worker visa program that allows people to come here for set periods of work, two years for example. But the visa should NOT include bringing the whole family along unless the employer wants to sponsor them, and a two-year work period would not be too long a separation. Since most illegals work to send money back home anyway, this would help everyone and would let us get a grip on this chaotic situation — not good. To be continued…

GWEN IFILL: This is a program which — an investigation which has been under way for 10 months. Was there any thought and concern given to the fact that some families would be ripped apart, that some students would still be in school and unable to find their parents, or that there would be any kind of human fallout from this? Were their plans put in place to take that into account?

JULIE MYERS: Absolutely there were plans put into place to take into account the human factor, particularly the factor of those victims — the U.S. citizens who were victimized by the illegal aliens working at the plants.

In addition, we have a toll-free number that we put together so that individuals could call in if they’re worried about a family member.

We also asked each and every individual that we encountered whether or not they were the sole caregiver of a child. If so, if they told us they were the sole caregiver of a child, we made special accommodations for them so they could be released and care for that child.

I wanted to clarify just a bit that my opinion of wage suppression isn’t based on the issue of immigration. I think it’s a deeper problem that supports class warfare in many ways. It’s still a method of exploitation and/or enabling that practice.

REMEMBER THE JAPANESE INTERNMENT CAMPS IN World War II?

In 1942, Americans of Japanese ancestry were forced into internment camps since ‘their country’ (Japan) was at war with the U.S. Americans of German ancestry were not taken to internment camps at all.

Starting in Feb. 1942, 120,000 Japanese (citizens and non-citizens, newcomers and long-time residents, alike), most from California, were imprisioned in ‘camps’ for the duration of the second World War. They were forced to give up their homes, businesses, schooling, and taken by bus to barraks in the desert and to hastily remodeled horse barns, so they would not ‘harm’ U.S. citizens.

If only there was as much attention paid to the provenance and safety of the meat as to the paperwork of the employees of the meat packing plant.

This is a horrible comentary on how far we have fallen. Chertoff said in a news conference that part of the object of the exercise was to intimidate other immigrants.

This is like the SS harrasing jews, gypsies and others without the “right” papers.

Border control, yes. Strict enforcement of existing immigration laws, yes. Wholesale raids that shut down plants and terrify the legal and non legal alike? I don’t think so.

These immigrant workers all had personel files and addresses.They could have been arrested individually.
This was juct a callous publicity stunt.

If they started fining employers $10K per undocumented worker I bet we’d see a change.

if they started tossing employers in jail for hiring undocumented workers, we would just about end the problem…
