This might be amusing if I didn't know this was the White House Press Secretary talking about the mess that is Iraq and President "Oh Yeah? Well, I'll Show You!": (via Froomkin)
" Q Did the military leaders encourage him to just take a little bit more time?" MR. SNOW: No, no, no. The President is the Commander-in-Chief; he issues orders. He decided, frankly, that it's not ready yet. . . .
" Q So some might infer that the delay means he doesn't know what to do.
" MR. SNOW: No, well, that would be the wrong inference to draw. . . .
" Q So just to get this clear, the reason for the delay is, number one, the complexity of the Iraq issue, and not because the President learned something in the last week that changed his mind?
" MR. SNOW: That is correct. . . .
"Q Is it possible that the President does not want to announce the deployment of thousands of more U.S. troops to Iraq before the holidays?
"MR. SNOW: No, it has nothing to do with that. Cynical, but false. . . .
"Q. . . . [T]here have been a number of references here about the Baker-Hamilton commission. To what extent is this delay in the expected announcement an effort to put some distance between the release of, and the reaction to that?
" MR. SNOW: It has nothing to do with it, period. Nothing."
Yup. Nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that he's been called a failure by people who were working in goverment while George Bush was still partying in what used to be New Orleans in his drunken stupor days. Or that fact that the vast majority of the American public thinks he is doing a horrible job and don't trust him to clean up after his latest pretzel party, let alone trust him to make anything beyond wrongheaded decisions with regard to Iraq...or really with regard to much of anything.
And what is the Grand Bush Plan For Ultimate Victory And Fabulosity?
"I will be delivering my plans after a long deliberation, after steady deliberation," the president said. "I'm not going to be rushed into a difficult decision."
...and perhaps crossing his fingers and toes.

Good morning everyone.
Fitz!
Second! Fitz!
Good morning, Christy, and welcome back.
Love the picture. Gives a whole new meaning to the term “shoveling snow.”
Good morning, Christy. How did the conference go?
Glad you make it back safe and didn’t get lost in DC.
I remember in the late 80’s when I was stationed in Southern Maryland that I took a friend to a destination somewhere in DC. Can’t remember where but what I do remember is getting lost(again). As we sat in traffic trying to figure out where we were my friend exclaimed that she recognized where we were. When I asked the name of where we were she said that she didn’t know but she had been lost here last week.
Mornin’ Pups
Mornin’ Redd
Glad to see you got home safe and sound.
This AM Laura Bush on CBS offered yet another
excusereason for the delay in announcement. She said the president didn’t want to pre empt the new SecDefWelcome back CHS
I like the “snow” and the implied reference to the Presidential SpokesLiar, but, with all due respect, it should be a different shovel and a different color “shoveling material.”
Oh and as an aside. I’m sorry I missed the hread for my post last night, I just saw it this AM.
Loved the comments.
John Casper if you see this, thanks for comming to my defense, but I actually agree with cupholder. Completely.
Looseheadprop @ 5
. . . you mean the guy who is NOT the Commander in Chief?
Just askin
Gotta go back and read the Leahy post now.
BTW morning news says That there was brain surgey last night.
Scarecrow @ 10
Yeah. I almost punched my TV. Think bout it, the Pres. is willing to continue letting our children die needlessly because he doesn’t want to commit faux pas and step on the new SecDef’s toes? Doesn’t want to bruise his dainty ego?
Glad you’re back, can’t wait to hear more about the conference, Christy.
It’s situations like this unwarranted delay that make me think Dubya has a wretched case of oppositional defiance disorder or conduct disorder.
He’s incapable of doing anything that someone of superior authority might ask or tell him to do. In this case, anything his father or the family consigliere tell him to do, he’ll buck against and hard.
But IANAP, YMMV.
“I will be delivering my plans after a long deliberation, after steady deliberation,” the president said. “I’m not going to be rushed into a difficult decision.”
The Decider not announcing his long-steady decision…
Johnson reported in critical condition after surgery…
Good thoughts, prayers, intentions…
Rayne — I think that’s right. And since he’s never had any intention of changing course (or saw the need for it), he has to put distance between what he wants to do and all the pressure to change.
Gee, the press is actually asking the right questions!
The President is still in his bubble, but the press has penetrated that bubble and is reporting it.
I think a lot of you guys are going to be interested in James J. Kroeger’s Nontrivial Pursuits.
Rayne @ 13 -
I don’t know what the clinical diagnosis for this would be but I think he’s just a jerk.
good morning all
Maybe Bush’s delay in action, when B-H and nearly everyone says the situation is rapidly deteriorating is a version of LIHOP.
If events occur in the downward spiral over the next month, the probable regional conflict would fulfill previous goals of military action in/with other countries.
lisadawn82 @ 16
LMAO, lisa. Now I can go to work with astute analysis filling my head. Later.
Morning gang! I got this post set to go and then had to run The Peanut over to preschool. I have to tell you guys this story. We got there, and were hanging up her coat and getting signed in when…in walks Santa Claus with his guitar to come and sing carols with all the kids. Oh. My. Gawd. This may, in fact, be the BEST DAY EVER at preschool. We are going to be hearing about singing with Santa for weeks now. :) All of the kids in her class were so excited — it was like watching a younger version of Beatles footage from the 1960s. hehehehehe

The delay is simple.
George has not had his usual days off this year.
He just wants to vacation during the holidays.
Christy, will we see you in DC at the Tester party in January?
Am not overly concerned with his situation being rated critical [the Senator…not the President].
This is standard after emergency brain surgery. Just to say he is critical this morning has no implications for his rate of recovery.
And yet, the rumor is that we’re “doubling down” - an unfortunate phrase that both is an incorrect gabling metaphor and does not involve sending 140,000 more troops to Iraq.
Something tells me that that quote may come back to bite Tony Snow.
The colloquial expression in the environs of Crawford is that “GWB couldn’t pour water out of a boot.”
What does it say about the American electorate that it took them six years to figure this man out?
This explains to me why Bush abandoned his job as a pilot in the Air National Guard.
Imagine a pilot with this decision process flying a jet. The Instructer Pilot (IP) says:
“(IP) Bush! You’re too low! Pull up!”
“(GWB) I’m the Decider here! Don’t rush me!”
Next scene is the IP on the ground holding his collapsed parachute and looking at the wreckage of a jet. “I told him he was too low. He wasn’t willing to do anything quickly.”
At AmericaBlog:
50-70 Abducted on the streets of Baghdad today:
Yes, lots of thoughts and prayers for Tim Johnson and his family today. With immediate surgery like that, am wondering if it was an aneurysm issue that had to be immediately dealt with — the symptoms can be similar to a stroke and/or heart attack. If so, and if they caught it early, egregious is correct that the “critical” designation is one of those abundance of caution designations by the hospital. Let’s hope so — this is such a difficult thing for a family to have to deal with whatever the cause, and I wish them well and a speedy recovery to the Senator.

and a mighty second to that! Been sending warm healing thoughts that way since I heard about it yesterday.

I’d say that aobout 75% of all Americans are praying and holding their breathe for Sen. Johnson. So is an even larger percentage of the world population that is hooked into the news.

Dodd and Kerry are going to Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, and Israel. The Bush administration had previously blocked this trip, but are now letting them go grudgingly.
It is long past time that a Regency be imposed on this quarter-wit.
It looks like he is going to follow a ’surge’ strategy. That ought to fix a sectarian dispute that has raged bloodily and uninterrupted for 1,300 to 1,400 years.

I have no inside information, just watching the news and praying. Used to work in neurosurg at Mass General, that’s why I said the critical designation per se isn’t any worse than knowing that he had emergency surgery.

I saw that in the NYTimes this AM. Don’t forget who Mike Garcia is…..
He’s one of Chertoff’s protoges. Garcia used to head ICE. Before that he was an AUSA in SDNY, part of Fitz/Kelley’s counter terrism unit. Never a star though. His had a very hard time getting any traction since he came to the helm. No speaking invites to the more powerful Bar Associations. I’ve heard lots of the big guns in NYC dismiss him as a lightweight.
Nice guy to invite to a barbacue, sweet tempered by all reports. But he has been looking for an issue to make his mark (I heard Pataki adviser Paul Schectman told him to make medicaide fraud his signature issue–unfortunatley the Eastern District of NY already has a crack medicaide unit so what investigationg agency is gonna bring cases to a fledgling effort in SDNY?)
My point is: This is going to end up defining Garcia as US Attorney.

Surgery can be successful in the repair while still having residual damage. Need to wait and see if there is any neurological deficit.
With fingers crossed [a Christian sign, by the way] I’ll speculate that it is looking better for his staying alive, he is very fortunate there. Brain hemorrhage is mui dangerous.
BarbinMD has a post up at Dkos on Sen Johnson. Also NPR just reported he is out of surgery.
I’ve not heard a prognosis yet. Let’s hope he is ok for his sake, that of his family and for our country.
eg - doesn’t it take 6 or 8 weeks for the brain to heal after a big trauma? that long before they really actually know how much damage might have occurred? even if he is showing deficits now?

after seeing yesterday’s news of their plans to ‘double down’ and go after al-Sadr, I am more sickened than I have ever been with the direction we’re headed. f*** Vietnam, the repercussions to come make it all but impossible for us to ever regain our place in the world and I despair at all the blood and as yet unimaginable pain that is set to flow in our name
Christy and other firedogs, I take solace that there are folks out there still willing to discuss any of this - my hat is off to all of you and your strong hearts
The play President. Remember when we were little kids and used to walk around in our parents shoes — well, not quite walking — pretending we were somebody else? Bush has been pretending to be President ever since November 2000. It’s quite remarkable, and not a very good commentary on American political life that he was able to keep playing out this fantasy until now.
‘I’m the decider!’. Clump, clump, clump ….

This is off the CNN website:
“Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota suffered a hemorrhage in the brain caused when a cluster of blood vessels is too close together, said Johnson spokeswoman Julianne Fisher, quoting Adm. John Eisold, attending physician at the U.S. Capitol.”

Whatever any of you think you are waiting for from Chimpco, you actually know (and I know you know) what you are going to get: a lump of
coalshit - the status quo or an increase in US troops in Iraq.Chimpy & Chimpco won’t change. Ever. Whether they think they are on a mission from god, or cause Chimpy’s ego isn’t up to leaving, or they really feel that they are winning (or will win regardless how long it takes and no matter the death and destruction), or b/c they think it is good politics (whether at home or abroad). I have my favorites among the above, but, choose any one or any combination thereof, NOTHING CHANGES in Iraq.
Take the Moron at his words - it will be for the next administration. Let the CM buy into the idea of deliberation, or that he is allegedly listening to, let alone weighing, anything other than the advice of his inner moron or inner circle of like minded morons. He’s not. You know that. He may be delaying, but there is no suspense.
Shorter me: Ponyism is dead vis a vis Iraq till Chimpco is out of office.

On Countdown, it was made clear that Mr. Johnson can keep his seat no matter what his condition, so long as he is alive. I think he will survive. He likely had the very best care our tax dollars can buy for our representatives (just not for us).

Nerve cells do take a long time to heal. But I think there will be an early indication that the bleeding either did or did not have a major impact on his ability to think. Whisking him to the ER definitely saved him.

Yours in Cassandra,

Well, finally I can crash and get some sleep. Had been so worried about Sen. Tim Johnson.
Funny thing is, I had said to Mr. K8 yesterday evening, “Wonder if he’s got an a.v. malformation?”
Not because I’m smart about medicine, mind you, but because a close family member had a congenital a.v. malformation which caused a scary cerebral bleed (actually it amounted to an aneurysm), and had surgery to correct it.
Shortly after her recovery, her husband gave me and other family members a call and said that we should, if possible, get some testing done to see if this congenital problem was shared amongst the rest of us.
And oddly enough, my internist was just about to have me get an MRI to check out the extent of damage to my neck from a car accident anyway. He was kind enough to expand the order for the MRI in such a manner that it would give info on the key blood vessel area, along with the other neck information.
Thank goodness, it appears I do NOT have this congenital problem, and as far as I know other family members do not, either. Those who have an a.v. malformation and don’t know it (there’s no real symptoms) can be sitting on a time bomb.
But all through the night I was thinking about this type of medical crisis, praying Senator Johnson would be OK.
It make take a little bit of time to see if Johnson had any little bits of brain damage from the bleed itself, but he certainly got to the hospital quickly and got surgery much faster than my family member did. She had some problems with forming new short-term memories — had to use all kinds of devices and strategies, like hand-held computer schedulers and numerous note-postings around the house to help her not forget recent events and tasks. She did eventually recover a lot of the memory capability over time.
Considering that Johnson’s surgery came so very soon after the bleeding event commenced, things may end up being much, much less difficult for him in his recovery. Here’s hoping!!!
Will continue with prayers for him and his family.
Oh — and I’m sure he had his head completely shaved for surgery as my dear family member did. And when his hair grows back in, he may have the same cool “punk” look she did for a time!
Tony Snow is thee perfect Bush pitchman. Even those of low or no intelligence are insulted.

The President and Mrs. Bush are hosting a White House conference on Malaria :
GWB: “Great to be here today with all of you. Me and the First lady have very fond memories of our trip to Malaria. One of the finest countries in south Asia…great people..wonderful climate..”
Bush refuses to withdraw troops or end this war because it has been highly profitable for companies contracted by the US to protect the oil, rebuild infrastructure related to oil production and supply the armed forces. Do we for a moment think that Cheney wants to see this war end? Aren’t his shares of Halliburton stock doing rather well these days?
I’d like to see a breakdown of the money these companies get from our government, and how leaders in this administration are profiting from this war - let’s see how much money each is making on a daily basis, every day this war continues. Then we’ll get the real picture, the real reason Bush wants to delay pulling our troops out and ending this war.
And if Bush wants to send more troops, then Jenna and Barbara need to be the first to enlist, followed by Lauren, John Ellis Jr., Sam, Pierce, George P., Ellie, Noelle and other family members.
Each and everyone of these Neo-Cons who speaks about sending in more troops should be asked - “Who in your family will you send?”

Gracchusrex,
I second what egregious said so beautifully above
congrats on your honors student !
I’m feeling reassured about Sen. Johnson’s condition and agree with what egregious said about the ‘critical designation’. He still warrants routine close monitoring despite the apparent success. There are plenty of complications unrelated to the initial problem addressed that can arise in the post-operative period.
Interestingly, ‘brain surgery’ for aneurysms and AVMs increasingly relates to procedures that don’t require a craniotomy (incise the skull) but rather intravascular procedures using microcatheters to control bleeding from within. I’m hopeful he didn’t have a craniotomy, but sometimes it’s the better plan. Seizures were one thing that was possible to account for his initial symptoms, but AVMs can precipitate seizures. Also, having brain surgery which in and of itself is traumatic to the brain increases your risk of seizures post-operatively, even if you had never had a seizure in the first place (another advantage of endovascular techniques).

Your humility concerning ultimate “answers” in these matters is really inspiring to me — that kind of humility seems to be a real strength, and not a weakness at all. Thanks for your thoughtful replies!]
I am confused. I thought GWB was the guy who could think from his gut and that the great benefit of this thinking is that he was not fettered by namby-pamby Washington pointed heads.
Conversely, we now have a war strategy that requires months of evaluation in order to tack one way or the other. Isn’t there a mid-stream paliative they can initiate to reduce either Iraqi casualties or U.S. soldier casualties or both while they gaze into their collective navels?
What would anyone make of this?

Seems to me that it’s also part of the strength of FDL, too. We may be outspoken and opinionated, but we’re willing to wrestle with difficult questions (and each other) and even change our minds on them.
Someone needs to do an accurate count of EXACTLY how many brave Americans lose their lives from the time the “Decider” decided NOT to decide until the “Decider” actually decides something. Bush has perfected “going from bad, to worse;” “out of the frying pan, into the fire;” etc. etc. to an art form!!!
