I tried to link through on Drum’s site to the original Times article, but I couldn’t get it, I don’t know if it’s my browser or link rot of some kind but that is how I’d look for it.

I always remind my winger friends that they supposedly hate “do gooders” yet everytime they talk about Iraq they weepily paint the US military as some sort of peace corps.

It’s not about the man- presidents come and go, governments come and go. It’s the frustration of feeling like the whole country and every single Iraqi inside and outside of Iraq is at the mercy of American politics. It is the rage of feeling like a mere chess piece to be moved back and forth at will. It is the aggravation of having a government so blind and uncaring about their peoples needs that they don’t even feel like it’s necessary to go through the motions or put up an act. And it’s the deaths. The thousands of dead and dying, with Bush sitting there smirking and lying about progress and winning in a country where every single Iraqi outside of the Green Zone is losing.

Once again… The timing of all of this is impeccable- two days before congressional elections. And if you don’t see it, then I’m sorry, you’re stupid. Let’s see how many times Bush milks this as a ‘success’ in his coming speeches.

A final note. I just read somewhere that some of the families of dead American soldiers are visiting the Iraqi north to see ‘what their sons and daughters died for’. If that’s the goal of the visit, then, “Ladies and gentlemen- to your right is the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, to your left is the Dawry refinery… Each of you get this, a gift bag containing a 3 by 3 color poster of Al Sayid Muqtada Al Sadr (Long May He Live And Prosper), an Ayatollah Sistani t-shirt and a map of Iran, to scale, redrawn with the Islamic Republic of South Iraq. Also… Hey you! You- the female in the back- is that a lock of hair I see? Cover it up or stay home.”

Wrong. If Vietnam’s aftermath proved anything, it’s that we are incredibly crappy losers. We deny, we reject, we evade and ignore and refuse responsibility until it becomes so silly and surreal even the staunchest warmonger has to cringe in embarrassment. At this point, it seems nearly impossible for America to accept defeat with anything resembling perspective and dignity and the understanding that maybe, just maybe, we ain’t all that saintly and ain’t all that perfect and maybe God really isn’t necessarily on our side after all, because if God took sides she wouldn’t actually be, you know, God.

But what happens to a country if they lose the thing that supposedly defines them most? If we don’t have our bogus “victory,” if we don’t always win, if we don’t have a sense of righteousness so strong and so inflated and so utterly impenetrable that even when it seems like we’ve lost, we still stumble through some sort of offensive end zone victory dance, well, what’s left?

What, conscience? Humility? Humanitarianism? Or how about the realization that we could maybe, just maybe learn to be defined by something other than rogue aggressiveness and the vicious need to win? Something like, say, a mindful, flawed, difficult but oh-so-incredibly-essential move toward that most challenging and rewarding of human ideals, peace?

Yeah, right. Who the hell wants that?

“The government does not intend to appeal the Court’s ruling pursuant to CIPA Section 6(c), and the government will move to dismiss its Notice of Appeal on the Court’s CIPA Section 6(a) ruling.“

This is from a Status Report filed today by the government, as requested by the Judge on 12/11. I have yet to read the defense’s Status Report, but wanted to get this information out ASAP.

In sum: The Libby trial is set to start on time, on January 16, 2007.

I spent a hard week trying to get my students prepared for the math and science tests I will be throwing at them tomorrow. I am in no mood to hear from Laura about her views on schools. Thank you very much. ;) The math looks good. The science looks iffy. If my kids fail; I have failed them.

In reading the Status Report from the defense, it looks like they’re desperately seeking a Hail Mary after the buzzer, in their endless plotting of further Trial Avoidance Tactics. They’re now threatening to dig up past denied discovery requests to try to get the Judge to rule that those past denials of discovery material must now be granted because of new timelines established during the closed-door CIPA hearings [they “may file within the next two weeks” to compel this discovery (very late in the game), the defense says]. They also hope to find yet another CIPA Section 6 issue when the government turns over Jencks Act (witness information) material before the end of the month. The defense also now objects to the government introducing the entirety (rather than portions) of Libby’s grand jury testimony at trial. But they basically concede that the now-infamous “dot chart” (memory defense work-volume graphic) will not invoke any CIPA issues.

Thanks for the best map I’ve seen of Baghdad. I hope that Malkin will be reporting from Sadr City. Interestingly, I was looking at real estate in Baghdad in the summer of 2005, (thinking it was devalued due to “circumstances”) and it was REALLY expensive. Today, and after Bush and the neo-con Republicans invaded Iraq, ousted Saddam Hussein and de-Baathified the “new” Iraq, the WAR ZONE is all of Iraq, with the epicenter of Sunni/Shia sectarian fighting taking place in Baghdad, with untold thousands of Iraqis being butchered every month…while untold thousands of Iraqis flee with their families for their lives.

And the Iranians are eating it all up, supporting their Shia proxies in Iraq, something that was unimaginable with Saddam Hussein in power.

And the Saudis are getting ready (if they haven’t already) to jump into Iraq with both sandaled feet by supporting their Sunni proxies there by any means at hand.

Bush and the neo-con nuts put a match to a powder keg in the Middle East…and then placed our soldiers on top of this powder keg…with the warring Sunni and Shia factions throwing even more sparks at the powder keg.

When it blows, everyone will be a loser, including all the U.S. citizens who continue to blindly support everything Bush and the neo-con nuts do, both in the White House and Congress. Idiots!!!
