Ellen Tauscher sure did paint a target on her back with a couple of poorly placed comments to the NYT. But it seems her talent for disparaging grassroots activists isn't something new. One of her constituents gives the following account of a speech she gave earlier this year:
I am 18 years old and a senior at Acalanes High School. I am the Youth Outreach Coordinator of the Lamorinda Democratic Club, President and Founder of the Acalanes Democratic Club, member of East Bay for Democracy and East Bay Young Democrats, and during the next several months will be working to create a Contra Costa County Young Democrats. Despite all this involvement, I have only seen Tauscher speak once. Maybe this is because, as a Congresswoman, Tauscher's in DC all the time (which I doubt is the reason because I've heard Miller speak 3 or 4 times) but I suspect that it is more because she does not like dealing with local clubs knowing that she will be put under the spotlight and actually asked tough questions.
[]
One person asked why the Democrat's didn't have a set, united platform. Tauscher responded that they did. After multiple people further questioned about what the platform was and why we didn't know about it, Tauscher expressed her disappointment that we (remember, we're a smart district) hadn't done our research and that if we simply went to her website we'd find her policies. Now, of course this answered no questions because we wanted to know about a united Democratic platform not one Congresswoman's platform. Finally one person got to the point and asked the right question. He wanted a united Democratic platform that was simple and easy for Americans to understand, one similar to the Republican's Contract with America which helped them win in 1994. Tauscher paused a moment and then asked the man if he was a professional activist or politician. The man smiled, shook his head, and responded that he was a doctor. Tauscher promptly replied that she doesn't plan on performing surgery just because she saw it on TV.
As you might assume, the meeting ended shortly after that and Tauscher did not stick around to shake hands. After that meeting I swore I would never vote for Tauscher. It didn't matter that she had well thought out answers to the topics of Iraq, Iran, and Nuclear Bunker Busters or that her record on social issues is quite decent. I wasn't even taking into account her terribly pro-corporate stance on economics. I could not and still cannot vote for Tauscher because she does not believe that we the people should run our government. Her belief that government is for professional activists and politicians undermines all that netroots, grassroots, and the Democratic Party should stand for.
As Kos notes, Tauscher's camp has been doing a Lieberman-esque whine about how the netroots shouldn't be making her life difficult by challenging and disparaging her because it's bad for the party. Somehow this wisdom did not grip her when she was Sista Souljah-ing progressives to the NYT.
And the fact is — if she's got perceptive 18 year-olds running around her district asking pointed questions she can't effectively answer, she's got bigger problems than the netroots. Much bigger.

This Demo would very much like to ascertain what EXACTLY my party stands for. Like in… where are we on the issues of Iraq, the Israeli-Palestinian problem, “choice”, the environment, health care, and a bunch of other things?
I am assuming she had no primary challenge this last election. Jane Harmon had a challenger last time – hope that this lady has to go to the voters seriously in 2 years and explain what she has said and done.
Off topic – it scares me to Have Lieberman and Tom Lantos head of some serious committees in the upcoming congress.
What a gasbag.

Makes me angry. Very angry.
It’s starting to look as though it will be pretty much business as usual in DC, no matter who’s in charge. I am thinking about being disappointed.

Agreed, we’ve been triangulated into meaninglessness. I don’t see Tauscher defining things to anyone’s satisfaction.
Lock and load.

What else can one expect from a Congresswoman who was once an investment banker and a member of the New York Stock Exchange?

Good News from TPM:
So I guess, what with Ciro’s victory, I get a cookie, or something.
OK, back to studying for finals, maybe after Thursday I’ll be able to hang around the comments again…
I only weesh that there was an ActBlue page where pipples could donate their hard-earned dolares toward primary challenges for some of these democratistas invertebradas.
That way there would be a leetle seed money just waiting for the right challenger, a tempting leetle taste of the support that a challenger could have, just to make eet look eenteresting.
So.
That’s one bright 18 year old– glad she’s on our team!
in other dem news: a little excerpt from an interview yesterday and it goes on to include Medea Benjamin and Cindy Sheehan.

oh, and !El Gato Negro! — TeddySanFran told us to say woo-hoo to you from this morning’s Ciro thread.
The author is a long time activist and a big time McNerney volunteer. I am so happy you put this up Jane. Kids like this one should be inspired by their Representatives not demoralized.
Living in the next county over from Rep. E. Tauscher’s home turf, I have often read her comments in the local newspapers and have written several letters to her office. Unfortunately, Rep. Ellen Tauscher (F-CA) is just another imperial corporate fascist dressed in democratic cloth, similar to fascist Feinstein (F-CA) and fascist Liberman (F-CT). These three gangsters have been happily goosestepping along with the idiot fascist Bush (F-TX,CT,ME…) and his illegal criminal war of fascist (dare I repeat myself one more time?) aggression against the Iraqi people, the Afghani people, the citizens of New Orleans, et al ad nauseum…
Cheers.
There are still some dems who think this last election victory gives them a free pass. They don’t understand that we the people are saying “NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL!!!”

Tauscher’s district includes broad swaths of upper-middle class suburbia (many of whom work in the office parks of San Ramon to the south, i.e. Chevron HQ, etc.) and also a rural comnponent to the east, towards the delta.
Her contempt for “the people” is stunning, and she deserves to be taken out in a primary. However, a successful primary challenger will have to appeal to this fairly conservtive demographic. If Jerry McNerny can pull it off next door ina an even more conservative diatrict, there is hope.
Conventional Wisdom Corner-
“Ironically, many analysts say that of the leading contenders, Clinton might get the biggest boost from a Denver convention. To win, a Democratic presidential nominee must reach out beyond the party’s base in the Northeast and on the West Coast. That’s especially true for a senator from New York.”

Consider the awesome power of the Military Industrial Complex and its media arm, campaign finance, lobbys, PAC’s, sanctimonious religious fundamentalism, piety and prayer.
This is the rethug camp. Half of the democrats are in this camp and the other half have got their finger in the wind to see if they should jump in too.
Sure looks like we are going to have a solid chance to further our gains in the next round. The sunlight on idle minded bloviatin’ windbags, such as Tauscher, is just the ticket. Kudos to the young minds who will stand up and say, “This is just wrong!”
As always, thanks Jane…)
CNN – “President Bush has been on a ‘listening tour’”? WTF…
Ed*ard Teller @ 24
Maybe we could push the corporate media to refer to it as a “hearing tour”? While he’s going around having people talk to him, I don’t believe for a minute that Bush is actually listening.
Ed*ard Teller @ 24
The Horse called them Media Whores for good reason.
More rebranding (free advertising courtesy of the media) for the sheeple. The decider is now the listener. He may be capable of hearing, but he don’t listen. He ain’t gonna start listening now. Just his gut and God and whoever gets his ear first (Cheney, Rummy, Wolfowitz…) to make him think it was his idea.
Tauscher is an appalling hack, with no real understanding of her district, let alone general Bay Area politics. As a displaced Oaklander, planning to return there one day, I am always embarrassed to see her speaking for Democrats. Lantos and Feinstein actually have principles, even if we don’t agree with them (I can’t count the number of times I have held my nose and voted for Feinstein), and they’ll at least listen to opposition. Queen Ellen, on the other hand, believes she is simply above listening to any opinions other than her own. The only reason she’s a Democrat is that she couldn’t get elected in her district if she were a Republican. I’d love to see a true progressive go after her in the next election; I think El Gato Negro’s @12 has a great idea. It would be fabulous to see Tauscher facing an organized primary opposition over the next 2 years. It might in fact be the only way to rein her in.
Speaking of “tours”. . .
What would it be like if our own JANE was on tour?
It’s got a good beat; easy to dance to… I give it an 89.

I lived in Tauscher’s district until 2002, but never got the feeling she was my rep. George Miller paid more attention to the needs of the East Bay than Tauscher ever did, and it’s a mystery to me why she gets elected.
She is from a stretch of California that never ceases to amaze me for the spectrum of house members elected — starting with Pelosi on the western edge, Miller to the east and north, Tauscher farther east, and then Pombo as one moves further east into the Central Valley.
Goes from two-times-good to bad to worst, eh?
Well, this election Pombo got his pink slip from the voters. Perhaps in 2008 the Congressional lay-off trend will move to the next district west? We can at least hope…
Cieran @ 36
Let’s incude my somewhat lower profile rep. Barbara Lee in the contiguous CA-09 district (Berkeley/Oakland). She’s definitely on the Pelosi/Miller side of the equation.

Hey loosie @35..where do you support hookers?

I did ask that President Carter be invited here, though.

The most important thing to do now and for the next year is make her go on the record repeatedly about her position on Iraq. Bush will send more troops and it will be a disaster (that is, it will continue to be a disaster for Iraqis but w/ an assault on Sadr, a disaster for US troops). Make her support bush publicly and often. I live in an adjacent district and know a progressive can win there if they can get out the vote in the western part and hang the war around her neck everywhere else.

Good point.
Dang– at first I thought that photo was of Nancy Grace (shudder).
I was extremely unhappy when I was redistricted into Tauscher’s district — George Miller had previously been my rep. I have been to a couple of Ellen’s meetings, which are indeed few and far between. I was at the meeting JJ described, and he is right on about it. Ellen got angry and was arrogant and patronizing toward the audience.
I am really pleased that there seems to be a groundswell forming to try and find someone to run against her.
Here is another example of why I would like a new representative: There was an article in the New York Times a few years ago about how young soldiers were being snookered into buying expensive life insurance they did not need. Some soldiers thought they were signing up for a savings plan, only to discover when they returned from Iraq or Afghanistan that they were broke. Others thought they had to sign because their sergeants were in the room. The Pentagon wanted to ban insurance agents from military bases, but Ellen was against the ban. She was quoted as saying (I’m paraphrasing) “We shouldn’t treat them like children.” In other words, she sided with the insurance companies rather than protecting young soldiers who were being taken advantage of by unscrupulous salesmen. That’s not okay with me!
Thanks for sharing that disturbing but otherwise excellent comment, Karen. It amazes me how the groundswell develops from individuals who live in so many distant places but are joined in a common goal of a better future.
When’s she up for reelection? We can do better!
What an asshole! She’s clearly of the Lieberman/Schumer/Emmanuel wing of the party….triangulating corporatists who do NOT do real Progressive democrats any favors. I hope that this asswipe get her clock cleaned in the next Primary….oh and take Feinstein with you too!
