For instance, Taco Bell’s current troubles are probably related to the evisceration of inspection protocols.

Mexican bioterrorists! Time to open up a southern front in the Global War On Terror!

Good God, Eli, the southern front exists and we’re trying like hell to shut it down. Hush now, and listen:

Our High Sheriff, one Leo Samaniego, who has been re-elected any number of times as a Democrat has publicly endorsed Republicans - most recently Gov. Perry and state senate candidate Donald “Dee” Margo. Perry won, Margo lost, and for his perfidy, Samaniego has been bounced from the party, a fact he refuses to accept.

Perry has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to border sheriffs in Texas, and Samaniego has been high on the list. Theoretically, the moneys are to fight crime and are to be used for border security.

In reality, they are used to hunt for the undocumented and the unwary. The vehicle (no pun intended) of choice is the checkpoint. It is legitimate (and to me distasteful) to employ checkpoints to see if motorists have licenses, insurance, and are not driving while blotto.

But the sheriff and his minions go further: they also make inquiry about one’s right to be in the country. One minion got so carried away that he boarded a bus and began checking for citizenship papers, which is a no-no. Since we are not yet required to carry citizenship cards, this caused a huge hue and cry, and led to 3-4 thousand people signing a paper publicly questioning the Sheriff’s sanity.

The Sheriff, who has taken to wearing 5 stars on his collars, sort of as a sheriff of all the borders - take that, Gen. of the Armies Eisenhower! - has been sued and enjoined from such activity, but his minions persist, and the sheriff claims he disciplines them and tells them to quit.

Truth is, the Minutemen love the sheriff, the local republican El Paso Times loves the sheriff, and so does Governor Perry, who enjoyed a marked increase in support from my brown brethren and sisthren who in turn love their lawmen.

And the sherriff, who is probably serving his last term, views all Mexicans, whether here or there, as narcoterrorists, bioterrorists, undocumented terrorists, terroristsbydefinition, and geneticterrorists, given our proclivity to breed - and in my immediate family, 34 Democrats who will vote for the first time next November - continues to wage his war on brown people documented or no - largely unchecked.

The Libby case is one of the reasons I find the impeach/no impeach talk premature. A Newsweek poll showed that about 45 percent of the public has no appetite for impeachment. But the Libby trial, the next phase of the Senate Select Intelligence Committee investigation into pre-war intelligence, and other events slated for the new year mean more bad pr for the White House and, by extension, the GOP. Just recall the controversy that accompanied the Fitz filings alleging that Cheney had told Libby to release certain information to the press. That, along with the findings of oversight hearings and investigations could sour the public mood even more and make impeachment a more realistic option. Just the fact that it’s a topic of conversation says something, IMHO.

Peterr @ 65 Ali was the greatest for certain. I caught that program and believe the DVD hits the stores today. What a fine presentation. I’ll always treasure the autographed photo above my desk with arms held high in victory. Mr. Fitz can go the distance if Irving’s that damn stupid.

RevDeb @ 95

I was an intern at the State Dept right after Reagan took office. The top positions were already filled, but many of the second line political appointees were not yet in place. During that kind of transition, the career folks step into the breach as “acting” directors, asst. secretaries, etc. until the new administration fills out its appointments.

That was a relatively peaceful transition from one administration to another. Here, however, things are a bit different. The career folks at EPA (and elsewhere) will function as “acting xxx” to replace those who left, but given the amount of pressure that these folks have been under to produce politically “appropriate” regulations and research, I would imagine that at least some of them will be taking a big gulp of fresh air - perhaps for the first time in a long time - and be willing to step up for the sake of some sound science.

They also might be more than a little happy to help Henry Waxman’s folks go through the files. With fewer rabid political folks in the way to slow things down, this might just speed up the whole investigative process.

Pass the salt . . .

Let us pray.

My impression of Walton is that he’s going to move heaven and earth to start this trial on time. The “faulty memory” defense appears to be dead. The “graymail” defense is on life support (at best). We’re getting closer and closer to a defense that’s based on “The Vice-President told me to lie through my fucking teeth.”.

the “faulty memory” defense isn’t dead

scooter just don’t get to try confusing the jury with a “so called” expert who can’t even keep her own statements straight

scooter’s still going with the faulty memory defense, and here’s the best part:

scooter has to take the stand himself to present his defense

in case you ain’t been paying attention, testifying under oath is where scooter’s probvlems started

With regard to the government’s pending CIPA Section 6(a) appeal (noted @ #101), it appears that unless the appeal is dropped, or the Appeals Court moves mighty quickly, the trial is likely to be delayed. Because as part of the “expedited” interlocutory appeal provided for in CIPA, Section 7(b) states:

“…Prior to trial, an appeal shall be taken within ten days after the decision or order appealed from and the trial shall not commence until the appeal is resolved.“

I’d overlooked that provision earlier. Thus, the timing of the trial very much depends on the status of the government’s CIPA Section 6(a) appeal.

By Kristin Roberts Mon Dec 11, 3:32 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A watchdog group that promotes religious freedom in the U.S. military accused senior officers on Monday using their rank and influence to coerce soldiers and airmen into adopting evangelical Christianity.

Such proselytizing, according to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, has created a core of “radical” Christians within the U.S. armed forces and
Pentagon who punish those who do not accept evangelical beliefs by stalling their careers.

“It’s egregious beyond the pale,” said Mikey Weinstein, president and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. “We apparently have a radicalized, evangelical Christian Pentagon within the rest of the Pentagon.”

The group asked the Pentagon’s inspector general to investigate a video in which some Army and Air Force officers discuss their faith while in uniform. . . .
