…why I adore Dan Froomkin:
President Bush this morning formally accepted a copy of the Iraq Study Group's blistering report, vowed to seriously consider its dramatic recommendations and spoke hopefully about finding common ground for the good of the country.
Sounds great. But does he mean it?
We'll know for sure once words turn into action. But in the meantime, it strikes me that as long as Vice President Cheney and political guru Karl Rove remain Bush's closest advisers, then the answer is probably not.
Cheney and his loyalists are largely responsible for the deception, delusion and incompetence that brought us to where we are today in Iraq. Rove intentionally turned the war into the most ferocious and divisive of partisan issues. Neither man has shown any sign of remorse.
Since his electoral comeuppance on Nov. 7, Bush has alternated between conciliatory language and fighting words when it comes to changing course in Iraq.
The nomination of Bob Gates to replace Donald Rumsfeld as defense secretary was one indication that Bush might indeed adopt a more measured and realistic strategy in Iraq. Gates's stunning candor about the current situation at confirmation hearings yesterday bolstered that view.
But until or unless Bush turns away from Cheney and Rove — the two men who have been his most intimate and trusted counselors — it's hard to imagine that his episodes of chastened, bipartisan talk on Iraq will amount to anything more than lip service.
Straight-forward, plain speaking honesty. Gotta love it.

Cheney and Rove are, simply, repulsive human beings. Cheney more than Rove, IMHO.
We also need some people with actual balls in D.C., and I’m not sure how that is achieved.
Gates was apparently not fully briefed before speaking to Congress, and accidentally spoke the truth about Iraq. One can only imagine the lunch break he experienced, with Dick Cheney whispering cold nothings in his ear, for when Gates returned from lunch he hastened to amend his comments regarding Iraq to insist that we’re not losing, either.
A man with balls would have simply listened to the VP (or whoever delivered the scolding) and ignored the message as the scrabbling coverup of a desperate propagandist.
The sooner D.C. grows a new set and starts dealing with reality rather than spinning it, the sooner this nation and our troops will see an improvement in our geopolitical situation.
And the pols in D.C. could start by realizing that there WILL be a day when Rove, Cheney and Bush are no longer powers in the capitol, and that day is fast approaching. Rather than running in fear from the enforcers of a failed policy, it’s about time for D.C. leaders – such as Gates will be as Secretary of Defense – to start setting their own policies.
But to do that these leaders will need personal integrity and the courage of their convictions, assuming that they have any of course.
Meanwhile if Gates’ caving on his “not winning in Iraq” statement is any sign, we’re in for two more years of the same dreadful mess in Iraq and Afghanistan.
God DAMN, that man is evil! That photo captures his essence perfectly.

Teddy 23, you know as well as I do that what we hear and the truth are generally two different things.
Do not yet despair. The big part of today’s work was turning around the Republican portion of the public and trying to win back Dems; it wasn’t about the line items in the ISG Document.
It was a shift in the Overton Window; it was unthinkable 3 years ago that Bush’s policies would fail, unthinkable 2 years ago that anyone would say so to the media, unthinkable a year ago that a senior Democrat would do so with the support of a senior Republican at his side, and that the public would even listen.
I’m certain there will be more troops necessary in the short run; they will be getting the backs of the rest of the exhausted troops who will regear and retool to get the hell out of Iraq, while escorting civilian contractors ahead of them.

I have absolutely no problem with the tin-hat crowd claiming this man is the ultimate puppet master in control of all aspects of government on over to Wolfowitz at the world bank (or visa-versa, depending on the time of month). The tin hats get a little crazy with the ‘contract’ kill conspiracys; but I’m not above questioning the suspicious death of Paul Welstone in my state. we’re hoping for two things
1) bush will realize rumsfeld was a moron and gates actually knows what he’s talking about
2) gates is not a neo con who wants instability in Iraq, tells the president the cold hard truth, exposes Cheney as a puppeteer, and makes it crystal clear Cheney has been the downfall of the Bush legasy
those things happen AND Bush takes approprate action holding them to acoount and responsibility, THEN he won’t be considered the abolute worst president, instead there will be a debate

These Israeli citizens must have been caught reading Carter’s book:
The Israeli interior minister, Roni Bar-On, declared that his ministry has planned the demolition of more than 42,000 homes of Palestinian Bedouins that were built even before 1948 when Israel was proclaimed. The minister, speaking at a session for the Israeli parliament’s interior committee, claimed that all those houses were “illegal” and warned that any new homes built in the so-called “unrecognized” villages in the Negev desert would be razed.

I predicted we’d see 3000 KIA by election day 2006. Thankfully, I was at least wrong about that one.
Junior has to be torn between his deep love and admiration for Cheney and Rove and a recognition that the world has discredited them. If he is a fool, he will stay true to serpents who dragged him into this mess, or he will equivocate. If he has any sense at all he will push them farther into the background than they are now (anyone heard from Former President Cheney lately?). My bet is that he is starting to think about his so-called legacy (moving from worst president ever to second-worst?) Behind whom?
Wonder what that view looks like from under the bus, Dick? Ask Rummy. Ask John Bolton. Ask Katharine Harris. Ask Andy Card. Ask Paul O’Neill. Ask David Kuo. Ask Senators-not-soon Santorum, Chafee, Talent, Allen, DeWine.

The book on this president is that from the beginning- he saw EVERY issue as a partisan political issue–and “decided” appropriately.,.
Rove is his only trusted advisor–when something happens- they don’t think about how to FIX it- they think about how to EXPLOIT it- and in the end- they have lost both wars- the policy wars and the political ones.

The truly funny thing about this (and whenever they go loopier than usual over their idols) is that it never, ever, occurs to them that the wealthy and powerful play by their own rules, always.
When that determination to ignore law and convention conforms to their notions about how things should be done, well, the people involved were “bold” and “decisive,” but when that playing by their own rules runs counter to their cherished “values,” they’re just berserker about it.
At least they aren’t nominating the turkey baster for sainthood (which they would be doing, you just know they would, if it were Jenna or not-Jenna, children of The Blessed Bush).
Partition and immediate foreign troop withdrawal.
Is, as I see it, the only viable solution to stopping the bloodletting of both American troops and “Iraqis”. This puts the U.S. in the position of having to prevent Turkey from ravaging the Kurdish partition, but any troops we have there likely won’t be as much danger of being slaughtered like cattle.
The US has saved Europe in two world wars and protected us in the Cold War. Is it now Europe’s turn to rescue America in Iraq? Okay, the situation in Iraq is not an existential threat to America, but still…
The ISG report recommends a support group for Iraq that should include the European Union and could even include anti-war Germany.
Do you expect European help in Iraq?
I am skeptical. Germany’s Federal President, however, has called for helping the United States in Iraq.
I have blogged about the ISG recommendations involving the EU. What do you think?

Rayne, it’s looking more and more like that, isn’t it. SteveG’s post the other night was a bit of an eye opener (for me anyway, sounds like you keep a tighter rein (h/t punaise) on the real military logistics).
I would really hate to see it, though. More numbers seems to increase the statistics for more kids who could die; but if the case is adequately made that more force necessarily improves the chances of a successful retreat, then that has to be countenanced.

I think that Frau Merkel should come ta Iraq and show Clusterfuck how ta prosecute a war!!!
Why is it that most analysts and commentators put the blame on anyone but Bush.
Bush is the reason for the war in Iraq. Bush is 100 percent responsible for the mess in Afghanistan. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, the rubber stamp GOP or whoever enables Bush, is not responsible. And yes, ultimately the most responsible is each American voter who voted for Bush, not once, but twice.

they want Bush to STOP THINKING for himself, STOP TAKING CHENEY’S ADVICE
that’s why they say it’s not a grocery list

I heard O’Reilly say this on the radio yesterday while I was driving to work:
The United States will never be conquered by Muslims — ever. But you don’t want it to reach the point where, we have to, example, you know, level cities like Tehran, kill hundreds of thousands of people, which we may have to do — which we have already done in Germany and Japan. OK? We have already killed hundreds of thousands of people on one day. Now, do we want to do that again? Of course not, but we may have to.
Apparently, he hasn’t had time to read the ISG report yet.

I’m not saying it would be easy for “Iraqis”, and the U.S. would certainly need to offer citizenship to those who felt that their situation would not be tenable in any of the partitions. And of course, the hardship will fall on those who least deserve it: Those who do not view their religion as a weapon with which to club and subdue their neighbors. But this is the proverbial rock and a hard-place. Any decision we make will result in hardship and death. The question is, how can we limit it.
But here’s the fact: The vast majority of violence in Iraq today is religiously motivated Iraqi-against-Iraqi violence. No government, western or regional, is going to change the motivations for the violence. The only positive thing any outsiders can do now is to separate the factions, as best we can.
Once the major ethnic violence has calmed, then and only then can the people in the region think about a re-united Iraqi state. It took a brutal dictatorship to hold the former Iraqi state together, unless we are to endorse a similarly brutal dictatorship, I cannot see a way for us to even lessen, yet less end, the violence in Iraq.

There was a man who, ultimately, did not care about his place in history. He operated with the rest of the country under the day to day assumption that he was a bit over the hill, past his prime, not in his element any longer.

I have to agree with Randi Rhodes when she says the white elephant in the room is the fact that nobody is talking about the massive military base being built in Iraq. There will be no progress as long as the Muslim world sees us as permanent occupiers who will be there until we plunder and blunder our way through their world. She also added how Lee Hamilton has been untrustworthy since he sat on the 9/11 Commission and never asked any tough questions, thus allowing Bush to use the tragedy to his political advantage. And now he’s back with more of the same.
1. W always doubles his bets when he’s losing.
