Great AP Headline :
Congressman faulted for Quran at oath
WASHINGTON (AP) — Keith Ellison, who will become the first Muslim member of Congress next month, has offended some conservatives with his plan to use the Quran during his ceremonial swearing-in. The decision by Ellison, D-Minn., to use the Muslim holy book for the ceremony instead of the Bible triggered an angry column by Dennis Prager on the Web site Townhall.com this week.Headlined, "America, Not Keith Ellison, decides what book a congressman takes his oath on," Prager argued that using the Quran for the ceremony "undermines American civilization."
To which Lindsey Beyerstein responds:
It's sad when you have to settle for a source who doesn't know how Congressmen are made. Prager is railing against Ellison taking the oath on a Quran. Actually, new members are sworn in together on the floor of the House. Nobody swears on any books. The books are just props for the subsequent photo shoot. Think of it as high school picture day for new congressmen.
Anyway, a source is a source. Thanks to Praeger bold if ill-informed pronouncements, it's officially news that someone is uncomfortable with something Islamic about Ellison. Well played, AP.
Proving that stupidity is contageous, and Dennis Prager being a known carrier AP should probably scratch him from the "credible source" list.
Update: BobbyG writes an email to Prager.

Christy if your still around good luck tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our own BobbyG apparently sent Prager an email about this subject, which Dennis read on the air, complete with his website and email addresses.
In the immortal words of Jeff Spicolli, “You dick!!!”
Non of us objected when Clusterfuck got sworn in with a dog eared copy of “Free Enterprise Mountain Biking for Jesus” did we?
The irony here is that Prager would like Rep. Ellison to be sworn in while laying his hand on a Bible, a text that the new Congressman doesn’t even believe in. That would be bearing false witness, no?
BTW, Ellison as first Muslim congressman is bound to generate some controversy. I know some Repugs are just itching to get into a stiff about it. Ellison’s opponent John Fine tried to make it an issue but nobody listened. Minnesota’s 5th District is the bluest in the state.
(Disclosure: I live in the district.)
It’s like asking me to swear while my hand is on a copy of the Knuter’s “Contract with America” !
Praeger, that deeshonest moralizing apestoso, asqueroso, enculando hijo de puta sin cojones, can take hees leetle bible, roll eet eento a tight cylinder, and steek eet where hees mythical sky-being does no shine, eh?
so.
Who is the picture of?
JPL at 3 — thanks — but good luck with what tonight?
Anyway, I thought AP’s sources had to pass, not fail, a test for stupidity….

anyone have link? Did BobbyG leave that in the comments? I know Christy mentioned it (email) but I couldn’t find it.
What is it about Article VI, section 3, of the Constitution that states “…no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” that these people don’t understand?
Everyone knows that the Bible is the only official truth telling appliance in the history of america– if ya make em put their hand on the BIBLE- well then they HAVE ta tell the truth! The Koran don’t work- it doesn’t have the UL seal of approval AND Consumer Reports found that it was possible to lie yer ass off while yer hand is on the Koran.
Jane — it starts at comment 15 in the Joe Wilson post.
It is going to be very exciting to see how the congressional punditry attempts to handle Mr. Ellison. As a Mpls. native, I have had ample opportunity to listen and appreciate Mr. Ellison in print, on local radio and in person. He is erudite, and concise and a real hoot when he wants to be. He also has the capacity for laser like seriousness and he does his research.
He is also one of the few candidates I listened to in this area, or any other, who used the word ‘love’ in his speeches and really seemed to mean it. I hope the rest of the country will come to esteem the man as much as I have. And, I also hope he is able to play out even a fraction of the promise he is noticeable for.
He is a true gentleman.
I haven’t made time to read it yet, but here is a link to an email exchange between Sam Harris, who thinks that belief in god is, um, overrated, and Mr Prager.
Jane, thanks for keeping ‘em safe over at the AP.
(and who there has to remind them to close their mouths when they look up at falling rain?)
PS – may be a typo in the last line, although supidity sure sounds contageous to me, too.
[Mod note; thanks, Kirk. Refresh and it should be fixed now. FWIW, it looks like your glitch report last night is a server issue, not anything in WordPress.]

reposting a link to Aravosis’ take on this:
Really, Dennis? Because I don’t recall the Constitution mandating that a Congressman take the oath with his hand on any book at all. The use of the Bible is also optional, and I don’t remember voting on which book(s) would become the approved choices as optional swearing-in props.
I guess what I’m saying is, go fuck yourself, you ignorant shitwad.
johnSwifty @17:
As you might know, John Fine tried to call attention to Ellison’s link to Farrakan and the Million-Man March in 1995, and also to Ellison’s “activism” when he was a student at the University of Minnesota. Again, nobody listened.
Biodun @ 7
Oh Biodun, are you lucky. I envy you. I’m stuck with the perpetual tool, Jim Ramstad.
And, in response to your comment about the Mega-thread on language and LateNite, here’s one of my fav’s:
I personally carry a pocket Bible and if someone tells me something that I’m not sure of- like- “yer car will be ready this evening”,,I pull the thing out an make em swear on it. I have never carried a Koran- cause they don’t work.

Biodun, I’d sure like to learn more.
Perhaps the time is right for this matter to resurface in the punch bowl….
I expect the Wurlitzer will chew through all their old favorite dung balls as they search for just the right ones to throw at Ellison.
Knowing enough to refute them may be timely..
Biodun @ 23
Yeppers, and if it had any impact whatsoever, I think you’ll agree it was eventually negative for Fine. With the glaring exception of Michele Bachmann, I am proud to send up most of the delegation of folks we’ve managed to cull together.
rwcole @ 25
emprical question:
If you’d never carried one, how could you have assessed their efficacy?
:)
What about old Holy Joe? I doubt he is toting the King James’ Version at the swearing in ceremony? Is Prager worried about that?

“Oaths- Great and Small” by Magical Licksher
To correct a widespread misconception, Muslims accord great respect to the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, regarding both Jews and Christians as “People of the Book”, meaning the Bible. While the Qu’ran is believed to be the recordes recitation of God’s own word by the Prophet, and thus the holiest and most sacred text, no Muslim would say they did not “believe in” the Bible.
Old Gold @ 29
What about Bush? What the fuck difference does it make what book he used as a prop when the only part of that oath he even understood or paid attention to was “I, George Walker Bush?”

All true enough, although maybe tangential to the false issue at stake–a Muslim’s preference for the Qu’ran over the Bible as a prop for an oath of office. This should surprise nobody, and should offend nobody except self-important jerks like Dennis Prager who think they hold veto power over others’ religious beliefs.
kirk murphy @ 28
So true and, in fact I had an experience which might shed some light; I do much the same thing with my pocket bible — sans old testament but for Psalms and Proverbs, of course. One day, I accidentally left with my copy of the holy scriptures for the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Well, imagine my surprise when, not only where all my prayers answered, but suddenly I had unsolicited offers for polygamous arrangements I could never hope to entertain. Be careful what you wish with; you might just get it.
please pardon the OT but i’ve been wondering lately if anybody has followed the money on the Iraq Study Group? work has kept me from getting to read a number of posts over the past month so maybe i missed it. seems like something that would be interesting if not surprising ……

FDL needs to be more open minded. Actually, Mr. Prager has many moral insights. For example:
Thank God for moral violence
This was new to me. (link to Grouchy’s Liberaltopia I found via the AP article’s technorati tags)
Scarecrow, perhaps FDL should not be more open-minded, but more violent?
{Note to NSA minder: I kid, I so kid like Coulter kids!}
Stoning is the best- and most biblical form of moral violence- and yet we almost never see a good stoning- why is that? Have we become too lazy and morally bankrupt to put down our video games and go out into the street to throw a few stones with our neighbors? Are we to SECULAR for a good old fashioned stoning?
We should not be surprised that our nation is goin ta hell in a handbasket!!

Which I take to mean that the unfortunates who were killed and injured in Madrid, Bali, & London don’t matter. Perhaps they were all too “secular”.
Even the churches who pretend to value the bible the most don’t follow it..
We had a preacher in Colorado recently who was guilty of homosexual behavior.
Now if ya read the Bible I imagine (but don’t know) that he’s supposed ta be STONED- so what happens? They try ta SAVE him- fer Christ’s sake!!!!

My email to Prager’s parent company, Salem Radio Network:
______
So, this morning I read a news account regarding your KRLA Talk Radio boy Dennis Prager going off on the incoming congressman from Minnesota, the Muslim convert fellow who plans on swearing his oath of office on the Koran.
I was infuriated at the ignorant and inflammatory bigotry of Prager’s assertions, and I emailed him a terse characterization of my reaction. Nothing obscene or threatening (I’ve kept the email), nothing worse than, say, what Vice President Cheney might say to a Democratic member of Congress during a fit of pique.
It wasn’t but 15-20 minutes thereafter when a friend of mine from California called me on my cell phone to say that Prager had read my email aloud on his radio show, complete with my name and email address and web address (bgladd.com).
If I get the first brick through a window at home, or my car keyed, or become the subject of ANY other form of harrassment or violence in the wake of this stunt, you guys will come to seriously rue the day he did this. That’s not a threat, it’s a promise. I am copying this text out of your form and will be saving it as well.

I don’t know why we bother having any expectations whatsoever that the rethugs are going to behave respectfully or reasonably on Ellison’s religion.
We’re talking about the same party that’s decided to make an issue of the fact that Obama’s middle name is “Husein,” and he’s a Christian.
These people are thugs and bigots with an Animal-House-like level of maturity and none of the conscience. To Dennis Prager,
I read this a few years ago and while this was originally for pResident Bush – I now see things have changed – since you obviously are the new arbiter of all things religious and constitutional, and we all know from what you have said that there is no difference between Gods Law (Christian Evangelical God) and Mans Law. I ask your advice in the following areas, because you have been given The Word of God (movie preview guys voice).
The rest here
I anxiously await your response, Mr. Prager.

What stood out to me was the AP headline. (Prager’s always a moron, no surprise there.) “Congressman faulted for Quran at oath”
WTF? Drunk drivers are faulted after a wreck, a CEO may be faulted after a company collapses, but how could anyone fault a person for their religious choices?
The writer almost never does the headline, so we can’t blame Frederic J. Frommer, but some anonymous editor on the desk. Something like “Congressman criticized for Quran at oath” would have been more accurate.
Let’s go back to basics, and in America that means the Constitution.
Freedom of religion was enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution. First amendment says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;…”
But look also at what the basic document of the Constitution say:
“Article 6(c) Oath of Office; no religious test. The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive officers and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”
Then consider the definitions of “oath” and “affirmation” which you will notice are considered equal in the Constitution.
An oath is “a solemn promise, usually invoking a divine witness, regarding your future acts or behavior, or a commitment to tell the truth (especially in a court of law); to lie under oath is to become subject to prosecution for perjury.”
An affirmation is “(religion) a solemn declaration that serves the same purpose as an oath (if an oath is objectionable to the person on religious or ethical grounds).”
So to take an oath or affirmation is to commit to perform an act or to tell the truth, based on the highest authority by which your own conscience allows you to swear, without regard to any diety or specified ethical code. All such oaths or affirmations are considered equal under the law.
Just as an aside, it also appears to me that to permit either an oath or affirmation in Article 6 of the Constitution clearly demonstrates what is meant by the First Amendment. The government of the U.S. cannot establish any religion at all, and every American and resident is protected from enforced religion if they do not want to participate. We have both freedom of religion and freedom from religion. No diety or religious preactice can be established by law. Period.
This is all over and above Praeger’s pay grade, apparently.
Prager insults all patriots who believe in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution with his bigoted rantings.
TheOtherWA @

This phrase we use, “He/she/it drank the kool-aid,” is sort of an implicit fault against those poor souls at Jonestown. The Heaven’s Gate crowd that took off on the Hailbop comet might be faulted for bad religous choices; unless they were right, then I’ll fault them for leaving me behind with George Bush.
But, smartassedness aside, I too was struck by that and I agree entirely with your WTF over the matter. It’s disgusting in AP; but, I’m starting to expect less of them every day.
Prairie Sunshine @ 103
Time to start building the George Galloway testimony commemorative float.
Not the least ridiculous thing about this AP story is its premise. What DOESN’T ‘offend’ someone like Prager? Folks of his ilk live to be offended.
When you’re talking about a group that’s chosen Michael Savage, Michelle Malkin and Rush Limbaugh as its chief spokespersons, you’re referring to idiots.
If it wasn’t Keith Ellison, it’d be Nancy Pelosi marching in a gay pride parade or Jimmy Carter visiting Cuba or some other nutball thing these people latch onto to drive themselves into a furor.
In short, this is news?
Out of curiosity, what book did Mitt Romney swear on? Would Prager throw a hissy fit if it turns out to be the Book of Mormon?
For the record, I don’t give a shit what book anyone swears on. If it were me, I’d swear on Lord of the Rings….or maybe Richard Bach’s Illusions.
I haven’t read everything yet, but I, too, wrote the evil Mr Prager an email condemning his statement that there is a preferred book in America. I also asked him who died and named him the head of the Book of America Club.
If he did anything with this email – anything at all – I’d be mightily surprised. I only mention this because I wouldn’t be surprised if he had thousands of emails in response to his racist remarks. Oh, and I also said that his remarks were indeed racist, and that the only racists I knew were people who purported to be Christians and who purported to live by the “Good Book”. (I ought to have asked him to name what good book he has read lately)
Good on BobbyG.
I’m just sorry that Prager is such a blow-hole and such a scummy one, at that.
