Oh, hey, here's an idea: how about we actually respect our values and beliefs, and our Constitution and Bill of Rights, instead of using them as a stepstool for our personal ambitions:
Newt Gingrich sees, in terrorism, not something to be exterminated, but something to be exploited.
It's his golden opportunity, isn't it?
'Rallying a nation,' you might say, 'to hysteria, to sweep us up into the White House with powers that will make Martial Law seem like anarchy.'
That's from the original version of the movie "The Manchurian Candidate" – the chilling words of Angela Lansbury's character, as she first promises to sell her country to the Chinese and Russians, then reveals she'll double-cross them, and keep all the power herself, waving the flag every time she subjugates another freedom.
Within the frame of our experience as a free and freely argumentative people, it is almost impossible to conceive that there are those among us, who might approach the kind of animal-wildness of fiction like that — those who would willingly transform our beloved country into something false and terrible.
Who among us can look to our own histories, or those of our ancestors who struggled to get here, or who struggled to get freedom after they were forced here, and not teer up when we reed Frederick Douglass's words from a century-and-a-half ago: "Freedom must take the day"?
And who among us can look to our collective history, and not see its turning points — like the Civil War, like Watergate, like the Revolution itself — in which the right idea defeated the wrong idea on the battlefield that is the marketplace of ideas?
But apparently there are some of us who cannot see, that the only future for America is one that cherishes the freedoms won in the past, one in which we vanquish bad ideas with better ones, and in which we fight for liberty by having more liberty, not less.
"I am seeking to create a movement to win the future by offering a series of solutions so compelling that if the American people say I have to be president, it will happen."
What a dark place your world must be, Mr. Gingrich, where the way to save America, is to destroy America. I will awaken every day of my life thankful I am not with you in that dark place. And I will awaken every day of my life thankful that you are entitled to tell me about it. And that you are entitled to show me what an evil idea it represents — and what a cynical mind. And that you are entitled to do all that, thanks to the very freedoms, you seek to suffocate.
Some days, you just have to start with a little Olbermann fix. That felt gooooooood. Crooks and Liars has the video of the whole special comment — and it is worth the watching.
That Newt Gingrich made an ass of himself talking about restricting free speech at a dinner in support of the First Amendment? Well, if he was looking for some Sister Souljah moment, taking on the Founding Fathers at a dinner in their honor in New Hampshire (whose state motto is: "Live Free Or Die") was not, perhaps, the smartest thing to do, now was it?
But then, consider the source…

FREE SPEECH!!!!
EPU’d
Just saw KO on C&L.
Wo. He was smoking. I don’t remember seeing him so angry. Newt wants to suppress freedom of speech to save the nation, including shutting down troublesome people on the internet.
Morning all. Servers are up and running again. Still trying to figure out what caused the down time. Sorry about the inconvenience, but our genius tech folks are working on it. :) Thanks John and Jamie!
Time for people to consider workarounds if the main progressive blogs get shut down. Or have “problems.”
hey, site’s been down for me this morning
Christy Hardin Smith @

It’s all that damn incivility.
Morning Christy!
what newt doesn’t realize is that, if we limit free speech, it will set a bad precedent. After free speech is gone, they will try do away with habeas corpus, then our right to privacy, then our right to…. oh wait, never mind.

He’s always been politically tone deaf, thank goddess. Nothing new about that.
I think he could be a dangerous man otherwise.
Looking through the comments on this subject at a newt site. here are some of them:
newt is a has been and he should remember that. If not America will tell him again. The crooked man that is eye of newt is evil and unAmerican to say the least. He should be subjected to what he proposes then that would take care of the problem. Newt is a terrorist…. under Bush’s first definition. Bush said… the terrorists seek to change our way of life… so Newt… you are essentially a terrorist. Sorry but you meet Bush’s definition. Will Bush notice?

anyway, it’s true, there is such a thing as anti gravity, einstien predicted this affect from spinning a super conductor, but, his prediction was a million, ,trillion, trillion times (magnitude 30), weaker then the experiments democtrate
they are actually predicting a device that will demonstarte gravitational effects in the order of 17 times (in order of magnitude) over normal matter.

Good morning class.
What does O.o represent?
I love it that those in GOP leadership are espousing such ideas as curtailing free speech. It will add time to their banishment from power, allow us time to clean up their mess, and remind us of what dark future awaits us if we ever let down our guard and allow the GOP to assume powe again. Keep talking, Newt.
(OT somewhat) I’ve been lurking at FDL for about a year. One of the things I noticed early on was the information available here.
Rarely do I watch TV news, network or otherwise. Weather, yeah. News (or what passes for it), no. I get most of my information from other sources, and it takes time and dedication to ferret out the truth. From what I’ve seen, most everyone here realizes that to some extent or another.
My point is that what I began to notice was that the links and information that I got at FDL was about a day ahead of the curve. I was seeing topics and information in the newspapers and what I did see of television news about a day after I heard it there. I already knew what they were talking about, and in much broader and richer detail than I was hearing from traditional sources. And there was critical information here that was glossed over, misrepresented, or toally absent from those main stream sources.
I would just like to say thank you Christy and Jane and the other commenters and bloggers for helping to maintain some semblance of integrity and ethical standards in this age of spin and obfuscation. This place is a good sanity check for me.
tfitznc @ 13..I saw the PG-13 rated pictures and it was not pretty.
It now looks like the American people are set to dissapoint President Bush by being unable to shop and charge the economy into a soft landing.

Really makes you wonder — does this person only know enough history to have heard the slogan, without knowing what it means, or does he/she really believe that a government reminder not to talk about sensitive information to people who shouldn’t hear it is “somewhat akin to” government legally restricting the speech of massive numbers of people because there are a few bad people who might try to communicate bad things?
A pefect fan for “history professor” Newt, I guess.
Newt is now irrelevant; he will disappear into the history black hole. The End.
It’s simply incredible that Gingrich has no problem calling for limits to free speech. Can you imagine if his words were spoken by a leader of a different country, like, say Iran? “Americans need to restrict their freedom to speak so freely. It is dangerous…”. The neocons would go nuts.
I’m wondering how we’re going to reverse the erosion of our Constitution.
What specifically is in the works to restore Habeas corpus and our rights to privacy? And how do we do this without allowing the Republicans to characterize us as terrorists sympathisers?
“Asked by a reporter yesterday about his use of Community Lawn Service with a Heart, Romney, who was hosting the Republican Governors Association conference in Miami, said, “Aw, geez,” and walked away.”

Idea of Rapid Withdrawal From Iraq Seems to Fade
By DAVID E. SANGER
While debate in Washington has turned away from President Bush’s call to stay, even Democrats have dropped talk of an immediate departure.

Biden Jr. of Delaware, the incoming chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, seemed to agree that hard timelines could invite trouble. Nonetheless, some areas of potential conflict with Mr. Bush seem clear.”

I can relate to that. The news shows run their teasers before commercials. During the ads I mute the TV and give my spouse a run down on what they’ll be saying about the story, usually in greater detail and with some “what does it all mean” commentary. She thinks I am some kind of seer.

Good Lord! That’s not even anything to joke about. It’s like the powers that be feel it slipping away and want to take one last run at shear, unadulterated fascism. And, to that end, they are regurgitating their previous poster child as a vehicle.
I think the important thing here is to watch, carefully, who begins to regurgitate this regurgitation. The authoritarian power base has proved itself adept, in the past, at slowly taking over the media by building platform consensus a block at a time. It will be interesting to witness who is chosen as the carriers of the blocks for this particularly insidious concept.
I ask you all now to use your imagination and describe a potential ‘form’ these blocks will take.
Beware!

I subscribe to the NYTimes. After I visit FDL for about two ot three hours, I read the paper, but I already know most of what’s in it because of the FDL visit.
This is an excerpt from an e-mail from my libertarian NH friend.
He no likey Newtie:
“And in the same speech, he speaks out against McCain-Feingold, saying it runs against the freedom of speech. Now, why would he berate McCain for this bill while espousing restrictions on the first amendment for the purpose of fighting terror? Because McCain is his adversary for the Pres race, and this blow-hard Big Giant Head is thinking of running.
What a massive hypocrite. Now too many conservatives know that the DAY after the last plank of the Contract With America was passed in Congress, Newt said that he wanted his supporters in Congress to give his appropriators everything they wanted, because they had to “insure a republican majority in the future”. He is such a fraud he could be prosecuted.”
-GSD
Anybody see Mona Charen on Washington Journal this morning?
From the administration to conservative journalists, the right wing in America is so clueless as to American principles, they come right out and say the press should be a propaganda tool and that any criticism of the president or policies found in the media is anti-American and aiding the enemy.
Such is the mentality of people who think reality is a pliable, relative state to be manipulated to fit one’s agenda or outright dismissed and discredited if it doesn’t.
GSD @ 112
Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Adie — I have the same problem with Marion’s links, can’t get in using them because of the subscription firewall.
What I do is watch for these same articles to get picked up by other outlets in 24 hours. Truthout, for example, picks up Krugman’s essays. I also watch DKos to see if any of the diarists discuss them.
(I won’t be looking for the Friedman essay. Waste of my time.)
Basically, Marion is my early warning system, for which I am grateful.
TeddySanFran @ 100
From my experience with the accountants I worked with at a big four accounting firm, they had major concerns with SOX. And these concerns were expressed from the leadership to the senior staff levels.
It’s intersting now that it’s becoming a problem becuase the outsourcing is starting to reach the upper levels of the stock exchange.
A potential ‘form’ of authoritarian attack against the autonomous nature of the Internet: It will be an increasing undercurrent of MSM political discussion that there are various forms of Internet ‘freedom’ which hazard life and limb of American citizens. The idea will remain vague as long as necessary for it to become accepted as a root postulate in any further discussion. Then, once it is accepted that the autonomousness is dangerous, another slow building process will evolve around how to wage ‘war’ against the concept.
I’m late getting into this thread because the same high winds in WVA have hit Central Ohio, and electricity was off all over our village until mid-morning.
But I just have to second Karnak12’s paean to FDL. It’s the only blog I visit every day, both for everyone’s initial posts and for the discussion that follows. I spend lots of time following all the links, and by the end of a well-spent hour, I know pretty much everything that will appear in next day’s newspapers.
Between KO and FDL, I’m in a position to educate most of my friends about what they need to pay attention to.
I love this place!

Hi there, Christy!
Thanks for searching for that great cover for us. A question: how does one go about searching for a specific cover?
Oh wait! I started just now with the assumption that you remembered this cover, vaguely, from having seen it way back when, and then had to go search for it without knowing exactly where to find it.
But it occurs to me that maybe you mean you just wanted a good cartoon-ish pic of
the GrinchGingrich and had to go through a lot of unsuitable stuff first at Google Images or WikiMedia or some such?Well, I don’t know much yet about how to go about searching for images effectively and quickly. And it seems to me — what with all the GREAT thread pics y’all find to put up here day-in and day-out — that you must be a real whiz at it by now.
While being up all night doing work around the house I kept trying every half-hour or so to log in here for a bit of overnight conversation — it’s good to know that the site is back up, but worrisome if it’s hard to figure out what went wrong. Good luck to your tech geniuses!
(The “upside” to the site being down, as unpleasant as that was, was that I got lots done. Silver lining, and all that. Will be off for a bit of a nap now, but back again here a.s.a.p. — FDL withdrawal symptoms are a REAL phenomenon, that’s for sure!)

Lest we forget, the quote that told us all we needed to know;
“The aide said that guys like me were “in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” … “That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”
Weirdly, it doesn’t seem to be working out so well for them, does it?

Reyes has (0.00 / 0)
absolutely no meaningful experience in intelligence matters. There is considerable evidence that he is basically an opportunistic shit with a republican lite philosophy.
A poor choice, and one calculated to show the country that we not only grow pendejos unabashadly, but export them as well.

The two (0.00 / 0)
truly ugly votes (there were others) were for the credit card bill and Cheney’s energy bill. Beyond this, he’s made a family business of his position, helping his daughter secure a multi million dollar contract for border devices (lights, among others) that would help trap immigrants – but the things never worked. She was under investigation, but don’t know what the results were. He installed his brother as head of a local water district at better than 100 grand per year, whose only qualifications were that he was a former deputy sheriff.
He was widely despised as a hard-nosed border patrol sector chief when he first ran. Jose Sanchez, former Rep. Ron Coleman’s chief of staff, ran when his boss fell victim to the congressional bank mini-scandal. Ron had been a hugely effective congress critter. Jose suffered from name recognition, and lost to
Reyes by only 975 or so votes.
On the Sunday before the election, Reyes, his family and paid pals stuck flyers attacking Sanchez as being pro abortion under the windshield wipers of cars at Mexican-American Catholic churches. Jose, of course, was pro-choice. The whole Reyes family are something else. Reyes is our local Bonilla or Cuellar, take your choice.
Whoops – actually, Bonilla represents a tiny slice of El Paso County, the northeast side, widely regarded as the home of our resident yahoos.

The above are two posts of mine on Burnt Orange Report, a political site run by U of Texas kids.
Reyes is an opportunistic, amoral pile of crap who has made a family business of his seat in Congress.
He is popular only with rednecks and conservative Mexican-Americans and Blacks in his district.
Pelosi caved to the “Hispanic” caucus, and she should be ashamed.
Karnak12 and OhioTex — thanks much. It is very much appreciated. :)
For folks above who had questions about Reyes and who were hoping for Holt, this just hit my e-mail in-box:
Holt Statement On Appointment of Rep. Silvestre Reyes as Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence
(West Windsor, N.J.) – Rep. Rush Holt D-NJ) today issued the following statement on Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi’s selection of Rep. Silvestre Reyes to serve as chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence:
“I’m delighted Speaker-elect Pelosi has selected my friend and colleague, Silvestre Reyes, to be the new chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. As a Vietnam combat veteran and senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, Silvestre has a clear understanding of the costs of war and the sacrifices our troops are making daily in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world. His 26 years of experience in the Border Patrol give us a chairman who understands the challenges we face in securing our borders. I have admired his work on the Intelligence Committee, and I look forward to working with him to do what we must to protect America and its people.”
Sorry, but us locals know the real Sylvestre (spelled with a Y) a bit better than the beltway types. His love for the Border Patrol dates back to the days when his grandparents farmed in west El Paso County. They were infamous for treating their undocumented workers as if they were less than human, and from time to time siccing the BP on them if they got too rambunctious.

Wow, now there’s an example of an authoritarian system attempting to influence the autonomous nature of the Internet if I’ve ever seen one! Great find, thanks.

whew. Thanks for the information. ;(
Thanks Rayne 119. Just glad to know I have company. (Always will remain on a need-to-know basis with the toobes, I fear)
Agreed about Friedman(!) We know lotsa people quite impressed with him, but I could never understand why, to put it mildly.
Our local newspaper, which used to be terrific, was taken over when Knight-Ridder was split up.
It used to, and still does carry Friedman occasionally fwiw, but has steadily been dropping down to less and less real progressive op-ed material.
Earlier this week, they slammed us with a blatant neocon op-ed screed covering almost half a page. (entitled, “Election, schmelection. Neocons rule,” by our local paper – maybe showing a bit of life remaining in the old editorial staff after all, heh) by Joshua Muravchik (”resident scholar” at AEI). Supposedly 1st published in the WPost under different title.

Main gist of the piece-a-trash was to claim the midterm elections will merely necessitate a few mid-course corrections (one being rummy’s departure). “But neocon ideas are unlikely to be jettisoned – either by Bush or his successor – until a viable replacement is found. So far, there is none.”
Surely Newt’s pie-in-the-sky-talk and that article are linked. no? Disgusting! Just down right loony! (and that’s being unfair to real loons)
Keep up the good fight, fellow progressives. The thing’s still squirming. Whack it again for good measure. Then pass the shovels and we’ll try to clean up the mess they’ve left. Where to start?! sigh.
