When Joe Wilson showed up here at FDL the other day and mentioned his fears that American soldiers might have to fight their way out of Iraq, many people wanted to hear more. In response, Joe will be here on Monday at 11:00 am PT/2:00 pm ET to answer people's questions about the situation in in the middle east. As an experienced diplomat formerly stationed in Iraq during the first Gulf War, his perspective on what is happening now will no doubt be intereting so please join us for the discussion.

Great! Joe! Wilson, that is.
Thank you Jane– I look forward to it.
Joe and Jane Rock my Sox
“must see”
Yesterday, I was so bummed out after watching and listening to Bush’s Amman press conference, I started crying while I was driving along, listening to the petulant man. I was saying to myself “Somehow, we need to start listening to people like Joe Wilson.”
I think it was John Casper’s suggestion based on an answer Joe gave to a TRex question. Anyway it was a great idea and I’m really looking forward to it, Christy is going to be hosting it (she’s much more knowledgable about the situation in Iraq) but I will be there with bells on, you can count on it.
Talk about a coup!
Nice work FDL. I am looking forward the hearing the first declared enemy combatent of the Bush adminsitration, and a genuine American patriot offer his opinions.
-GSD
Nice job Jane! Maybe we could get Barry McCaffrey for rebuttal?
So, GeeW is gonna meet with the Iraq Shia cat ASAP, but not till January for the Sunni counterpart.
Hoping, I guess, that by such time, it’ll be moot.
_
A diplomat? What a novel idea.
too bad bushco doesn’t believe in no stinkin’ diplomacy.
Matt Stoller has a good one up at HuffPo re the ISG

I’m marking my calendar. I don’t want to miss Joe Wilson. Thanks, Jane.
Way cool!
Finally, someone with a real sense of wtf is going down in Iraq.AND, whith real, viable answers as to what we can look forward to seeing.
I would so vote for Joe to be in office.
GSD @ 7
Enemy combatant? We’d best take good care of him, lest he be given the Jose Padilla treatment.
O/T-
Well, this is interesting.
This right-wing radio cat Dennis Prager just went off on Keith Ellison (incoming D-Minn) for wanting to swear his Oath on the Koran (a Muslim convert). I emailed him my terse opinion of his attitude, and a friend in California just now called me to say that he just read it aloud on his radio show, complete with my email and web address.
Dude is fuckin’ with the wrong Irishman.
_
Here’s , the gist being
Perhaps the Ambassador would like to comment? I fear I may be right….
Excellent. I may be able to sneak in for a little but I teach class that day.
That is, I teach people how to be classy.
BobbyG @ 15
What a jackass thing to do.
SusanD @ 12
Me, too. Thanks Jane, Christy, Joe and John Casper.
dammit, I can’t get your linky thing to work for me.
Here’s where I wrote what I quote above.

BobbyG @ 15
Since when has messing with any Irishman ever been a good idea? (Just look where it’s gotten Scooter!)
I for one would be interested in his assessment of the ISG, the principals’ panel, both its weighting toward Bush I/Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats and its relative lack of foreign policy experience, and the working groups with their close ties to the traditional, and fairly conservative, Washington foreign policy establishment.
They don’t call ‘em the Fighting Irish for nothing!
kudos to you BobbyG! What a slimeball Prager is– does he think Ellison should do a quickie born again conversion before he enters the “hallowed halls”?
Freedom of religion– I know I read it somewhere…
And do those members of the Jewish faith have to swear on the Bible?
jerk.
(Maybe they should all just swear their oath on the Constitution.)
Bobby G, does clicking on your name take you to your website? If so, I love the content. Don’t guess Prager’s wingnutjobs will see the humor.

Keep us posted on any repercussions, please.
Jane: Thank you…I’ll be here lurking, as usual.
Bobby G: Ooooh, keep us posted. Praeger is a… well, you know.
angie @ 24
Agreed, if in fact they had to swear their oath on anything…
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/.....r-ellison/
angie @ 24
Bingo.
This Keith Ellison business. More freedom of religion. These religious nuts are the ones who think God wants them to force Armageddon. And they’re darn near succeeding. Religion is different than Christianity.
Josh Marhall:
Steve Gilliard has been working to document the difficulty of withdrawal. It would be nice if he could also participate in the discussion. Or, at least, if there are links to the maps he’s put up in the last couple of days in the intro post.
T- @ 25
Yeah. bgladd.com
It wasn’t 20 minutes after my email to Prager that my friend over in Monterey called to say that he’d aired my email and web address on his radio show. Jerkoff.

I vote you also send an invitation to Mr Gillard to participate.
jayackroyd @ 32
Agreed.
Our people are caught in a kill zone trying to get to the airport.

jeffreyw @ 34
That sounds like a very good idea to me too.
gabriel_is has a moving comment on the last thread (at 12:35). It’s worth the trip back.
I’m looking forward to Joe’s generous offer.
Hugh @ 22
Hugh — all good questions. I thought Matt Stoller, with a post over at HuffPo, has the best line on this:
wow, sanitas– from the article you linked to:
ignoramus stupidicus.
how dare he?
oh, that’s right, he’s preaching more hatespeak. I guess he has that backwash audience all riled up now.
angie @ 24
Not for nuthin’ but NOBODY is swearing on ANY book. They don’t and never ahve used abook. They just raise their hands and swear.
Some of them take publicity photos later on pretending to swear on a book. It’s all make believe, just like this bogus charge
Aravosis on Prager and the Koran:
thanks, lhp.
I don’t think that Jesus would approve of Prager’s lies and rabble-rousing.
Back on Topic:
Joe Wilson is fast becoming an icon for decency and courage and the willingness to speak truth to power.
I am so glad he is a friend of the Lake. I hope I can squeeze in some time while he is here.
jayackroyd @

I second this.
Oh Punaise, why would someone like good Mr. Prager lie and make things up??? I do declare I just cannot imagine such a thing.
;)
P.S. and OT: I waved at you when we drove past the Berkeley exit last Saturday on our way to SFO. Ah, my alma mater…if only our dear Golden Bears weren’t so predictable on the football field.
Iraq is already enduring two wars. Could it survive a third?
The competing claims of Arabs, Turkomans and Kurds in the oil-rich Iraqi north are an explosion waiting to happen
http://www.guardian.co.uk/comm.....15,00.html
It seems to me that the Bushies’ refusal to negotiate with Iran or Syria because they won’t agree to upfront demands is like a corporation refusing to deal with a union unless the union demand for fair play and a raise is dropped.
Cooperation for them means my way or the highway.
You’re all for choice, right?
MayDaze at 38 — let me second that. Please take a moment and go back and peek and leave something supportive. It would be a lovely thing to do.
angie @ 44
I propose a giant spaceship. We put all of the extremist religious whackos, from all sects, on board and blast them off to Mars, where they can work on their First Amendment issues without bothering the rest of us.
The list of current happenings/statements that I suspect Jesus would not approve of is becoming so long and so egregious that I’d be embarrassed to even ask his opinion.
I cannot be here next Monday as my computer is now at my daughters getting fixed. I am typing from there now.
But my question is why are the dems hiding behind the tree of “disaster will happen if we withdraw immediately” excuse? I know the military cannot move soldiers without a plan in place, but all I hear is “let’s change the plan” but they refuse to even address the issue of why we cannot get out sooner rather than later.
martha @ 47
(*waving back*)
the Bears are still headed to a bowl game, but visions of Roses fell by the wayside in AZ (I blame Matt O. :~), and they were no match for USC in the second half…quel dommage.
martha at 47 — please don’t lurk — your snark on Mr. Prager needs a wider audience. *g*

Clusterfuck has to be happy that he is being mentioned here and there by the press. He figures he’s better off even if people are trashing him. The real ugly time is still ahead- when he won’t be mentioned at all!
punaise at 53 — well, alas for my Mountaineers as well. But there’s always next year and we’ll still have our two big stars back…and get to a bowl game anyway. Woo hoo!

Wyoming would work.
Actually, maybe North Dakota. I’ve already got Dobson on my doorstep.
This is why the MSM is doomed: they hire journalists and pundits who just pull commentary from out of their asses while at FDL we get to converse with former Ambassador Wilson, a man who is intelligent, knowledgable and has credentials in his field of expertise.
Robert Greenwald was right - this is the media model for the future.
Thank you Christy, Jane, Pach, Trex.

I can’t wait until I no longer see or hear the little bastard.
Let the SOB fade into oblivion.
History has already pointed the finger at his sorry ass.
Wyoming is way too beautiful- send em ta Kansas- we can keep an eye on em there.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 57
I assume WV and Cal will never meet in a regular season game. If they ever face each other in a bowl game, well….
Christy Hardin Smith @ 57
Not to be a Domer-like asshole, but I’m clearly disappointed we ARE going to the Rose Bowl.
rwcole @ 62

Pete-Guess not- I only remember mountains and sheep- lots of sheep.
punaise at 63 — yes, and I’ve always wanted to see the Rose Parade in person, too. This was going to be my excuse for dragging Mr. ReddHedd and The Peanut out to CA to watch large-scale models covered in lentils and thistle down and other assorted “natural materials” lumber down the streets. SIGH I know it’s nerdy, but I just love the Rose Parade — have ever since I was a kid. One of these days…
MayDaze @ 38
The MayDaze link Christy referred to at #50 is #38.
Twisted at 64 — yeah, wish we were going with you guys — that would have been mucho fun on teh blog. *g*
CHS…yes ma’am!
The problem is, when I think about Prager’s act, and it is an act, I just get mad. (Which kind of kills my mood for snarking.) Liar, liar, liar. A purposeful liar. Grrr. But a good self-proclaimed religious man, I’m sure. Oooh, I’m back to irony, now, so I feel better.
scarecrow at 69 — thanks, I realized me error and changed it, but forgot that folks would have refreshed in the meantime. Appreciate you doing that. :)
punaise @ 63
Oh, that would be almost as fun as the fleeting chance that Cal would meet Wisconsin (mr. martha’s alma mater). Talk about the war of the Roses!!!
And can I just say how much fun discussing Iraq with a man who faced Saddam’s thugs down in person is going to be? *g*

To add to what you mentioned, ThinkProgress posted this approximately six weeks ago:
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/.....vil-war-4/
These religious wackos have assimilated the wrong meme. The Heaven’s Gate folks had a good thing going with the spaceship behind the comet thing but it seems their beam me up moment went a bit awry.
I was playin golf with two goopers today.. One of em barely knows how ta turn on Bill O’Reilly- so he never has much to contribute.. The other was about to go apoplectic about the Koran issue- wish I had known then what was just posted- that they don’t use a fuckin book ta swear these clowns in—would have taken every bit of air right out of him!
scarecrow @ 69
It’s not a link, just italics. Here is a link.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 68
Christy, I grew up a block outside of Pasadena - the Parade experience is a hoot.
For those with the time, you can volunteer to help assemble a float: some of the small communites still make thier own floats.
Putting on flowers a day or two before the parade is really fun, even with glue all over your work clothes!
Hope you and Mr. ReddHead and Peanut get to come out and play some year,
Christy, alas I have no money for a Rose Bowl trip so I wouldn’t have gone anyway. But it would have been fun here for sure. And someday, who knows? You’ll have to settle for a martini (or a cup of coffee) next time I swing through WV. Or you come to Indiana, that is.
rw at 77 — next time he goes off on it, pose this question: if he were a Christian serving his government in a predominantly Muslim nation, would you expect him to be forced to swear on a Koran? That one stumped a particularly vocal wingnut at the grocery store this morning when I ran out for milk. *g* (Yes, I can’t keep my mouth shut off the blog, either.)
But they don’t use any book to swear in — this guy is manufacturing a controversy to get publicity for himself. Not unlike the O’Reilly War on Christmas from last year.
rwcole @ 77
a real Archie Bunker type, eh? you couldn’t pitch any wedge issues?
Twisted at 80 — well, we probably wouldn’t have the money to do it either, honestly, but just thinking about having the opportunity was making me happy. ;-)
May I defend Kansas, the state that just re-elected a Democratic governor, a D attny general, and sent R Jim Ryun and his fundamentalism to the curb, sending D Nancy Boyda to Congress?
Here’s a classic gooper conversation (fresh from this morning)
Gooper A: “Iraq is gettin ta be a real problem”.
Gooper B: “Yeah- and Pelosi is a REAL nut”
Me; “Hmm- why would you say that Pelosi’s a nut? What did she do that’s so nutty?”
Gooper B “Well I don’t know- I don’t keep up with politics much- she’s just a nut”
Me: “So did you hear this from Rush or O’Reilly?”
Gooper B: “O’Reielly.
So we’ll have to pull up a chair on New Year’s Day with some flowery potpourri and pretend. Mimosas and Bloodys and good strong coffee!
rwcole @ 85
Oh gosh, please tell me that you weren’t playing with my parents…(!) *grimace and groan*
Back on topic, what worries me is how the Kurds will be treated via our lousy diplomacy and then the reactions of the Turks and others to whatever we do. They’re one of the wild cards that the neocons seem to try to ignore.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 74
There are reports today that the Administration is considersing (or may already have chosen) a strategy to give up on a united Iraq and instead just supporting Shia/Kurd efforts to impose “order.” I’d like to ask Ambassador Wilson if that scenario explains what Cheney was doing in Saudi Arabia.

The totality of the subject of federal swearing-in within the U.S. Constiution:
____
Article VI
…The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.
Emphasis mine.
Note “oath or affirmation.” They can simply publicly afffirm that they will uphold the Constitution. Period, the end.

Joe Wilson for President 2008!
If I have heard correctly, Cafferty has his own show In the Money on Saturday at 1 and 3 eastern. It was a walk thru my family room but that’s what I think I heard.
And Ambassador Wilson: lucky us!!!
I’m traveling tomorrow thru Monday and may have only intermittent internet connection :(
Hope you guys will keep the country running smoothly while I’m out.
Presidential Oath of Office:
I know I keep belaboring this point, but I wish someone would point out to Boy George 43rd that it does NOT say “to protect the American people from all physical harm, even at the expense of the Freedoms they may hold dear”.
AirportCat– it certainly bears repeating, imho.
He did not do anything to protect y’all during Katrina, and thus is a joke for alleging to protect the murkan people.
re: swearing on a Bible/Koran/no book at all…
shades of the War on Christmas.
I recall my astonishment on arriving here in the Bible belt (South central Texas) to practice law, and discovering that NO BIBLE is even used in court to swear witnesses. Just ask ‘em, “do you swear to tell the truth?” that’s it. Nobody seems to think anything about it.
From campaign days, here’s a video of Ambassador Joe Wilson meeting with congressman-elect John Hall

you funny pach!
Joe Wilson — hooray and huzzah! What a spectacular coup for FDL and all of us. Excellent.
I look forward (without holding my breath) to the day when Mrs. Wilson can join us for a chat without her minders and without the constraints I understand she labors under. For a real patriot and public servant to be silenced throughout this controversy swirling around her must be frustration’s zenith.
Or its nadir.
These two Americans must have their full day in the public square someday — how spectacular that the Ambassador will be able to provide his unique vantage on Iraq right here.
Plame/Wilson 2008!

RW,
Thanks for the questions that got us the gold star a couple of days ago.
But don’t send those b*st*rds to K*ns*s. I went to graduate school there, and it was a pretty nice place. Aside from not having anything betwixt you and North Pole but a knocked-down bobwar fence, that is.
Of course, the place has been taken over by a bunch of loonies since I left. But I do like to visit now and then…
BC
It’s great that he can set aside a three-hour block of time for this. He’s almost guaranteed to get bombarded by questions.
Think about it- is there anyone in the USA that has more street cred- especially around the world- than Joe Wilson?
What a President he’d make!
SO, THE WAR ON TERROR, ISNT IN IRAQ? THERES A CIVIL WAR THERE, NO ONE IN THIS ADMINISTRATION [ OR CONGRESS ] WANTS TO ADMIT TO. OUR TROOPS WILL BE SLAUGHTERED OUTRIGHT, ATTEMPTING TO LEAVE — AND CERTAINLY IF THEY STAY. ASK MR. McCAIN — WHAT THEN? THAT HE SENT ANOTHER 2,000 IN ? THE WAR PLANNERS HAVE NO PLAN FOR WITHDRAWL REMEMBER? NO WAGONS IN A CIRCLE. EVEN THE REPUBLICAN OFFICERS SEE THIS ON THE WALL — I BET. WONDER WHAT MUDDY MURTHA’S HEARING NOW?
