Yesterday, I was so bummed out after watching and listening to Bush’s Amman press conference, I started crying while I was driving along, listening to the petulant man. I was saying to myself “Somehow, we need to start listening to people like Joe Wilson.”

I think it was John Casper’s suggestion based on an answer Joe gave to a TRex question. Anyway it was a great idea and I’m really looking forward to it, Christy is going to be hosting it (she’s much more knowledgable about the situation in Iraq) but I will be there with bells on, you can count on it.

Here’s , the gist being

It’s not whether there will be a “speedy pullout”. At the rate the situation is deteriorating, there is little doubt in my mind that the US military is going to pull out of Iraq in a hurry, most likely sometime in the next year or so. The only question I’m entertaining is “under what conditions”.

It’s not outside the realm of possibility (sadly, I think it’s well within that realm) that Bushie’s insistence on keeping US troops in Iraq will result in either a precipitous dash for the Kuwaiti (or Jordanian or Saudi or Turkish) border, with the attendant huge (further) losses of life and equipment or, worse, Bushie insisting on the troops standing and fighting.

The latter will result in three things: (1) a debacle 500 or 1000 times worse than Custer and his Last Stand, (2) mass killing of Iraqis, innocent or not, and (3) Limbaugh’s rants yesterday to the effect of “kill them all” becoming policy. Bushie and his fundies have been looking for the opportunity to have their Armageddon (funny, how we haven’t heard that word in the MSM for a long time now, no?) and, if his policy continues unchecked, they’re angling to get it.

They’ve been stroking their nuclear trigger for a while, and I wouldn’t be surprised if and when they find a way to use it.

Perhaps the Ambassador would like to comment? I fear I may be right….

Iraq: Worse Than Civil War

The simple fact of the matter is the situation in Iraq is worse than civil war — the world is witnessing at least four major internal conflicts in Iraq:

1) A Shiite-Sunni civil war in Baghdad and the central part of Iraq. For much of the last year, a vicious campaign of sectarian cleansing has been taking place in the neighborhoods of Baghdad and the surrounding central regions, with Shiite militias targeting Sunni Iraqis and Sunni insurgent groups bombing Shiite sites.

The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that the latest killings this week in the central part of the country may be directly related to the lack of progress on the national reconciliation front. U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq have argued that the political solution, and not more boots on the ground, is the key to stopping the conflict: “you fix the government, you fix the problem.”

2) Intra-Shiite conflict in the south. Less noticed in the American media have been some battles between Iraqi Shiites in the streets of southern cities such as Diwaniya and Basra. In these clashes, intra-Shiite political disputes have being played out in violence in the streets — and in some cases U.S. forces have supported one faction versus another.

3) Sunni Arab insurgency in the West. The Sunni Arab insurgency continues to undermine security in the Western part of Iraq. The chief of intelligence for the Marine Corps in Iraq filed a report last month saying that the Al Qaeda in Iraq insurgent group has filled a political vacuum there.

4) Arab-Kurdish violence in the North. Violence and tensions have increased in northern Iraq between Arabs and Kurds, particularly in the disputed city of Kirkuk.

Christy, I grew up a block outside of Pasadena - the Parade experience is a hoot.

For those with the time, you can volunteer to help assemble a float: some of the small communites still make thier own floats.

Putting on flowers a day or two before the parade is really fun, even with glue all over your work clothes!

There are reports today that the Administration is considersing (or may already have chosen) a strategy to give up on a united Iraq and instead just supporting Shia/Kurd efforts to impose “order.” I’d like to ask Ambassador Wilson if that scenario explains what Cheney was doing in Saudi Arabia.

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

I know I keep belaboring this point, but I wish someone would point out to Boy George 43rd that it does NOT say “to protect the American people from all physical harm, even at the expense of the Freedoms they may hold dear”.

He did not do anything to protect y’all during Katrina, and thus is a joke for alleging to protect the murkan people.

I recall my astonishment on arriving here in the Bible belt (South central Texas) to practice law, and discovering that NO BIBLE is even used in court to swear witnesses. Just ask ‘em, “do you swear to tell the truth?” that’s it. Nobody seems to think anything about it.

I look forward (without holding my breath) to the day when Mrs. Wilson can join us for a chat without her minders and without the constraints I understand she labors under. For a real patriot and public servant to be silenced throughout this controversy swirling around her must be frustration’s zenith.

These two Americans must have their full day in the public square someday — how spectacular that the Ambassador will be able to provide his unique vantage on Iraq right here.
