Haven’t listened to it yet (still loading), TRex, but I’m going to post scarecrow’s comment in its entirety because this was so deep in EPU territory of the “Late Nite: Language” thread that even the omniscient one would have a hard time finding it (and it takes too long to link/load). He’d also have a hard time cutting through all the fog and pointing our community’s compass to true north as well as scarecrow does. It’s worth it. I trust you’ll concur.

I found it interesting that immanentize, in an early comment, asked about certain people. Where are they? Why aren’t they here? I too miss them. And then over the next hour or so, many of them showed up. We’re mostly still here, and I think we need to reflect on what that means.

There seems to be a deeply shared and powerful ethic that’s flowing underneath all the pain and division in this thread, along with all the efforts to reach out and embrace. Many of us are here not only for the sense of community, but the hope of expanding it, of politicizing it, of taking it to the country.

I want to express the hope that we all remain here — all of us — and keep working at this. We don’t always like each other, or always agree with each other, but lets keep listing and talking to each other because the conversation is really important. This has never been done before, there are no manuals for this, and yet look at all that firedoglake has become in such a short time. Look what we just did in the mid-term elections.

I hope we all hang in there, realizing that, as our beloved President says, “this is hard work.” After all, if we can’t keep firedoglake together, with this strongly felt common ethic, what hope do we have of pulling the Democratic party (or country) together under some sense of humane, shared values? This is what we are about. Let’s get on with it.

OK, I admit it, I don’t understand this post.

I thought it was very important to point out this dangerously sexist and misogynistic song by Tori Amos, which advocates violence against women and uses a term that is offensive and degrading to all women everywhere. If Tori Amos calls another woman a bitch, isn’t she therefore calling all women bitches?

She is clearly harboring a lot of hate towards women and her music should be boycotted. It sends the wrong message about Our Movement.

Pach – I would think 60 foot therapods would get excellent service.

The song speaks from that border place between rage, the desire to lash out, and the inner voice of restraint, the belief in peace.

I think most us have been familiar with that border region in our lives. I suppose, in my personal life, some guys I knew in grade school and maybe high school come most to mind. Especially in Catholic school.

I’m pleased to honestly say I have never in my adult life committed an act of physical violence against another human being…but I’ve been reduced to screaming at my monitor while reading of some new BushCo offense against sanity and good sense, and I doubt I’m alone here in my sense of rage.

I used to play the whole Peekaboo tape during lunch hour at the Catholic high school I went to and enjoy watching the scared jocks and preppies walk all the way around the gym to use another entrance to avoid me and my 2 trenchcoat wearing friends. This was circa 1986, long before Columbine fucked up that bit of goth fashion.

Do you see what I mean now? We share a musical taste brain. I may not have all the b side stuff from Tori Amos but I certainly have every album released in the states too.

Of course, while we are mentioning favorite female vocalists, before I started working with her here, Donita Sparks from L7 made my list of female rock vocalists whenever asked this question. I loved everything L7 did in the 90s and it feels so cool/weird to work with someone on a project later in life who you really admire.

You didn’t look under enough rocks back then. All that sugary gooey pop back then sent me fleeing into the netherworld of the goth/Alternative music scene. That was back when Alternative meant something and you had to go searching the back bins of dirty inner city record stores to find the artists.

Musicland and Camelot Music back then would never stock anything from The Cure or Siouxsie and the Banshees or The Replacements or The Pixies or anyone good. You had to really do research to even find out about those bands and then go on a hunt to find ways to buy the record or tape. Now I can download all those artists ten seconds from now on Napster.

I found it interesting that immanentize, in an early comment, asked about certain people. Where are they? Why aren’t they here? I too miss them. And then over the next hour or so, many of them showed up. We’re mostly still here, and I think we need to reflect on what that means.

There seems to be a deeply shared and powerful ethic that’s flowing underneath all the pain and division in this thread, along with all the efforts to reach out and embrace. Many of us are here not only for the sense of community, but the hope of expanding it, of politicizing it, of taking it to the country.

I want to express the hope that we all remain here — all of us — and keep working at this. We don’t always like each other, or always agree with each other, but lets keep listing and talking to each other because the conversation is really important. This has never been done before, there are no manuals for this, and yet look at all that firedoglake has become in such a short time. Look what we just did in the mid-term elections.

I hope we all hang in there, realizing that, as our beloved President says, “this is hard work.” After all, if we can’t keep firedoglake together, with this strongly felt common ethic, what hope do we have of pulling the Democratic party (or country) together under some sense of humane, shared values? This is what we are about. Let’s get on with it.

But the interesting thing is that it has never occurred to me to be in the least bit disheartened about the development of the dialogue here at FDL.

Perhaps I am an optimist, but it appears to me that with each passing day, our numbers and strength grow. Nietzche once stated “What is happiness? The feeling that power is growing, that resistance is overcome.” That is the feeling that one often gets watching the development of FDL and the progressive blogosphere.

I feel nothing but excitement and enthusiasm for what the future holds for FDL – both with regard to our shared conversation in the comments section, and the many powerful and unprecedented ways in which we unite to create political change.

We may argue amongst ourselves on an regular basis about any number of matters of both style and substance, but the critical thing is that we all share an understanding of a common progressive agenda, and we all can identify the people and forces that are acting against us. Of that I am fairly certain.

Sorry to miss the language thread. I read a lot of the comments today between scans at work (tee hee) and I think the thing that resonated with me the most was what someone said about the people who behave the worst are the ones who lament the lack of civility. The response to Webb is a perfect example. Who in their right mind thinks it’s ok for the VP to tell a senator to “go fuck himself” but thinks it’s rude for Webb to “disrespect” Bush? Personally I read blogs like this or the Rude Pundit precisely because the language is coarse and visceral. Because blogs like this articulate what I am feeling so well. The right has been kicking this country while it is down and now they want our sympathy? In the words of some anchor baby I heard once. “Boo fricken hoo!”

I believe (wag) that the incoming Congresscritters were briefed on the WH protocol at the upcoming reception. They were each probably assigned a Hill-based handler, who reported to National Senate Dems. If we find the unnamed source in the WaPo story (senior Democratic staff member on Capitol Hill) we’ll find the leaker of the entire story.

My experience with the WaPo is this: at an intimate seminar long ago, Publisher Lady Graham explained the code. An unnamed source for a quote will be identified, obliquely, elsewhere in the story. “Tagged,” if you will, with a clear identifier that links to a named source in the story.

Based on that information about how the Post used to source unnamed quotes, I excerpt this from the WaPo Webb tale:

“He’s not a typical politician. He really has deep convictions,” said Schumer, who headed the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm. “We saw this in the campaign. We would have disagreements. But when you made a persuasive argument, he would say, ‘You’re right.’ I am truly not worried about it. He understands the need to be part of a team.”

One senior Democratic staff member on Capitol Hill, who spoke on condition that he not be identified so he could speak freely about the new senator, said that Webb’s lack of political polish was part of his charm as a candidate but could be a problem as a senator.

You know, the truth is, we get an incredibly low number of trolls. And I don’t think anyone is getting moderated out tonight. We’ve kind of relaxed the trolling laws for now, but they’re still not coming over the castle walls in droves.

TRex, it did seem like a pile-on at times last night. I found it a difficult read, left the thread, went back to catch Digby, then moved on. That’s what happens when criticism is invited–someone starts and soon it goes from “fair enough” to “ugly.” I also totally disagreed with the idea that fdl threads are too often scant in substance and off-topic. Maybe I’m just used to the melody. I like the long, careful comments followed by occasional rifle shots from rwcole and others. It’s the mix that makes the comment threads interesting. In fact, the threads here are the best I’ve seen.

There is a story to this song. In April 1961 elements of the French Army rebelled in Algeria against De Gaulle’s policy of giving Algeria independence. The attempted coup was unsuccessful and the final group to surrender was the 1st Foreign Legion Parachute Regiment (1 REP). When the Army came for them they were led away into captivity singing this song.

To this day there is a 2nd and 3rd REP but still no 1. The singing of this song is symbolic in marking the end of hopes of ’saving’ French Algeria.

It wasn’t as bad as you thought last night. A great many of the critical comments were addressing the important issues of language and borders (if any) that should be applied to our discourse. You just happened to be the originating target du jour.

But–I’m an author and speak from experience here–even one bad review sticks in the craw and gnaws at the memory long after the praise and even the awards fade into “That-Was-Then” Land.

You want to play? Get used to it. Not that the sticking and the gnawing gets any better. But that’s the price of staying in the game.

Oh, we don’t get that much rest! We have elections every year; next year is the entire House of Delegates and State Senate, and redistricting isn’t that far off. We’re doing great on candidate recruitment on that front.

I think Mark Warner is a definite possibility (though he would also be a shoo-in for another term at governor), and there are plenty of signs that Allen thinks he’s running, which I find amusing. However, the latest rumor is that John Warner isn’t going to retire. Don’t know if he can’t stand the thought of that idiot Allen taking over for him or if he thinks he’s the only one who can beat Mark Warner, or what.

What’s this – a music thread without Donita? Aren’t we about 12 hours early?

Lots has happened in VA since I ran a statewide Dem Senate race in 1978, losing to the guy who lost to JWarner. I did not know he faced no opposition in 2002, for instance, or that he was now as centrist as described in wikipedia.

Seems like he could face, and lose, a challenge to his right in the GOP in 2008.

It wasn’t as bad as you thought last night. A great many of the critical comments were addressing the important issues of language and borders (if any) that should be applied to our discourse. You just happened to be the originating target du jour.

But–I’m an author and speak from experience here–even one bad review sticks in the craw and gnaws at the memory long after the praise and even the awards fade into “That-Was-Then” Land.

You want to play? Get used to it. Not that the sticking and the gnawing gets any better. But that’s the price of staying in the game.

And you’re awfully good at this game.

I’m glad we had the discussion jane began last night, but it was hard for me to watch (read?).

I can’t help noticing what shrinky people call “process” – the manner in which we interact (as opposed to “content” – the information we share).

I also can’t help noticing what we beard-stroking couch vultures call “defense mechanisms”.

In shrinky-speak, the DM’s are tools – screens, really – that insulate us from intolerable emotional distress.

The best-known defense mech is denial: pretend it ain’t there, and you don’t have to worry (as much).

Another big defense mech is projection.

Projection is the attribution to others (external and thus “outside” of one’s self) of “what I can’t bear to find in myself”.

Think of the homophobic preachers.

Last night I saw reasoned discussion about ideas, and I thought that rocked. I also saw increasingly high levels of emotional discharge with scant relation to the topic/thread.

The “unearned” emotional discharge is what I call projection.

Blergh.

I heard about this ten years ago. More like drive-by mastectomies. It was the idea of some wacko doctor in the Seattle area as a way of cutting health-care costs.

I could understand the insurers trying to implement this, but a doctor? Gimme a break. If I didn’t know better, I would have bet his name was Welbeck.

Hey all — servers are back up and running, and there is a fresh thread up above for the reading. Sorry about the glitch!

There was a glitch last night, too, 10:00 pst Couldn’t get in anywhere except government websites (!) like NOAA and the weather service. I know KO was talking about Gingrich’s clever plan to stop all bad things in the world from happening but sheesh…

Actually, the whole meta thing did not bother me. These things happen in every online community from time to time. They go in cycles. Sometimes you have to blow out the engine a bit.

They shouldn’t be regular, and there’s still a backstory about some of these people and the history of their, er, interest in this sitethat I’d rather not get into. We don’t initiate fights across the left, and we’d prefer it if others who care about movement politics would do the same.

I have and had no problem listening to the critics, and I held nothing back in my replies and responses. There’s a lot that people don’t get about what we’re doing, and there’s an old model of 90’s liberal single issue complaint politics that still has its manifestation online. It has its perspective, and sometimes its points to make, but it really has no idea how to build progressive movement politics, and so the admonitions that we’re gonna derail the movement are just silly.

But, all that said, I’m still mulling over all the commentary for my own purposes, even if I pretty much had my say throughout the thread and to a lessar extent, over at Watson’s place.

How ya doing, Trex? You’ve taken a lot of crap lately and it hurt a little bit to watch it happen. I suppose it’ll happen again, sometime. There’s no point in walking the razor’s edge if you don’t catch a nick now and again; but I’m a big, strong he-man (don’t burst my bubble here), sort of individual and it made me cry.

I keep repeating to myself that it’s all just PR, but it has been very, very hard to keep my cool at points. Very hard.

dude, you’ve been piled on here pretty good and perhaps a bit unfairly, but i think you fail to grasp that it’s not about you and your feelings about women, but about others who perceive your language as hurtful.

your use of “b!tch” and worse is not offensive to me and probably most other readers, but on a public forum like this it’s impossible to know how deeply these words can cut. what if “b!tch” was the name of choice for a woman who was beaten by her husband daily and every time she hears it or reads it the memories come flooding back? is your desire to freely use this language worth the negative feelings that it can evoke in people–especially when there are so many other words that could be used to equal effect?

i’m not for censorship, but maybe a little self restraint can go a long way in certain situations. i don’t think that’s a compromise of your intellectual integrity, but being slicker with your choice of words given your audience at any given moment.
