Too many stars.
Not enough sky.
"The Waitress"
So I want to kill this waitress
She's worked here a year longer than I
If I did it fast you know that's an act of kindness
But I believe in peace
I believe in peace Bitch
I believe in peace
I believe in peace
But I believe in peace
I believe in peace Bitch
I believe in peace
I want to kill this waitress
I can't believe this violence in mind
And is her power all in her club sandwich
But I believe in peace
I believe in peace Bitch
I believe in peace
I believe in peace
But I believe in peace
I believe in peace Bitch
I believe in peace
I want to kill this killing wish
They're too many stars and not enough sky
Boys all think she's living kindness
Ask a fellow waitress
Ask a fellow waitress

Trex!
Whore!OOPS – I was reading about Schumer and got my powerful throwbacks confused.
TRex!
Freep?
A zero for the southern hemisphere. Hi Trex.
OK, I admit it, I don’t understand this post.
petedownunder @ 3
When you refresh the page, does it spin clockwise or counter-clockwise?
It spins clockwise, but I spin counterclockwise. The story of my life really. BTW KM – I’m back did you ever get that email?
petedownunder @ 6
Yes :)
But from your question. I ‘m assuming my reply failed to reach you.
I’ll fire up the laptop and resend.
You may be glad your not here ATTM – freeze warnings in Marin last night. Brrr.
(and yes, I’m a SoCal weather wimp no matter where I live :)
I believe the author of this post is associating himself with the particular song and lyrics of Ms. Amos, here.
That, and maybe there’s a local diner that may have upset him.
KM: Actually I arrived in NorCal this a.m., and I did not get your email.
Can you figure out what this post is about? Trex posted and seems to have fled.
Haven’t listened to it yet (still loading), TRex, but I’m going to post scarecrow’s comment in its entirety because this was so deep in EPU territory of the “Late Nite: Language” thread that even the omniscient one would have a hard time finding it (and it takes too long to link/load). He’d also have a hard time cutting through all the fog and pointing our community’s compass to true north as well as scarecrow does. It’s worth it. I trust you’ll concur.

I thought it was very important to point out this dangerously sexist and misogynistic song by Tori Amos, which advocates violence against women and uses a term that is offensive and degrading to all women everywhere. If Tori Amos calls another woman a bitch, isn’t she therefore calling all women bitches?
She is clearly harboring a lot of hate towards women and her music should be boycotted. It sends the wrong message about Our Movement.
Pach – I would think 60 foot therapods would get excellent service.
The song speaks from that border place between rage, the desire to lash out, and the inner voice of restraint, the belief in peace.
I think most us have been familiar with that border region in our lives. I suppose, in my personal life, some guys I knew in grade school and maybe high school come most to mind. Especially in Catholic school.
TRex @ 12
I guess I am ahead of the curve then, I have boycotted her so much I haven’t even heard of her, but then I don’t get out much. Is she popular in some quarters?
petedownunder:
TRex is a big fan, and she has an intensely loyal and devoted following. This is an area where TRex’s tastes and mine dont intersect. We both love Ray Charles, but don’t agree on his version of Eleanor Rigby.
Trex, Pach, KM – I gotta fold, long day on big silver bird. Good night Firepups.
petedownunder @ 9
I wouldn’t dream of speaking for our beloved therapod (especially when he just answered :), but welcome and BRRR.
Hope your home is warm and toasty (and that everyone else’s home is, as well).
She’s one of my absolute favorites. I may have her entire catalog including b-sides and bootlegs.
But you know, I’m a sexist who hates women. Which is why my music collection is full of them. And my bookshelf. And my life.
it would be so much easier to dig Tori Amos if she didn’t move kinda like Captain Jack Sparrow when she’s onstage.
Pachacutec @ 16
Pach – thanks, I don’t follow pop music at all, but I do know who Ray Charles was.
TRex, I’m glad you read scarecrow’s comment at 8:13 and internalized it before your contemplative 8:13. You are fast.
Sure am glad none of that shit from last night and today was going to bleed into tonight’s Late Nite!
Oh yeah, Tori looks fat in this video.
Pachacutec @ 14
Intimately so! I’m pleased to honestly say I have never in my adult life committed an act of physical violence against another human being…but I’ve been reduced to screaming at my monitor while reading of some new BushCo offense against sanity and good sense, and I doubt I’m alone here in my sense of rage.
She’s in her, uh…fifth month of pregnancy here.
And yes, I know the exact date of her daughter’s birth.
Let’s make this a thread of favorite women vocalists or songwriters, maybe.
And with that, I think I need to head to bed, sadly.
Bobby: I’d like an omelet, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce. And a cup of coffee.
Waitress: A #2, chicken salad sand. Hold the butter, the lettuce, the mayonnaise, and a cup of coffee. Anything else?
Bobby: Yeah, now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven’t broken any rules.
Waitress: You want me to hold the chicken, huh?
Bobby: I want you to hold it between your knees.
Don’t go to bed sadly. You’ll hit your head on something because you’re busy moping.
Pachacutec @ 25
Kristen Hersh of Throwing Muses, now of the band 50 Foot Wave. I was originally going to use this song tonight under the heading “Bones Were Made To Be Broken”.
OT: For all my rather mixed feelings about President Clinton, this is cool.
Sadly?
Noooooooooo!!
TRex @ 28
Well, I’m glad you opted for your usual, subtle approach.
EvilDrPuma @ 31
Subtlety is wasted on the stupidly self-righteous.
Pachacutec @ 29
Yes, this is a good thing. Maybe he could have Poppy call Dubya and offer a couple of tips on negotiating prescription drug prices. Ya think?
TRex @ 32
Don’t get me wrong, I love the subtly barbed satirical wit of a Jonathan Swift…but sometimes, the right tool is a chainsaw.
See what a sensitive man I am, I noticed that Tori was pregnant.
Pachacutec @ 25
I fucking love Stevie Nicks, and its not because she looks fat in videos either.
Sara MacLachlan also does it for me along with her custom Taylor guitar (which I can’t find a link to at the moment but will keep searching).
And just between you and me, I think Gladys Knight is a better singer than Aretha Franklin.
EvilDrPuma @ 33
Wow! Even when out of office, Clinton is more effective than freakin’ Bush.
Oh, and btw, hi everyone. : )
Pachacutec @ 24
Goodnight, Pach – sleep well.
Well, I’m a jazz guy mostly, but I also love Emmilou Harris, I like PJ Harvey, Liz Phair is cool. Those are some quick ones.
Bjork never fails to rock my world.
Violently Happy.
Pachacutec @ 39
Same as me for both jazz and Emmylou. Playing “Time in Babylon” right now.
This PJ Harvey song is wonderful for driving fast and singing at the top of your lungs.
I like “Cornflake Girl” best among her songs. She is a terrific talent, but a bit of an acquired taste.
Check this out, Bjork rocking this reporters world.

But, where’s it go from here. With Mega Thread shut down, my tunnel vision is creeping back in. What’s the nature of reality in Late Nite tonight?

I don’t even try to explain it to people anymore. They either get it or they don’t.
I just love her. I wish she was my sister so I could call her every day.

Big Time Sensuality
She eats men alive and laughs.
I learned everything I know from her.
Gladys Knight’s material was not at good as Aretha’s.
lina @ 51
True, unfortunately. Still, the VOICE. It’s all about THE VOICE. She’s like a jet engine with perfect pitch.
lina @ 48

lina @ 48
I’ll second your Linda Ronstadt and raise you a Jane Siberry “Calling All Angels”.
This old Blondie song always makes me crack up.
Die Young, Stay Pretty.
Mad Dogs @ 54
my favorite Linda R. album was the one with “Crazy” on it.
And for the goth kid in me who refuses to die, there’s always Siouxsie.
Dazzle.
Jane Siberry’s “Calling All Angels” with the incomparable KD Lang.
Yeah ok I found it…Sara’s beautiful Taylor guitar.
But only click on this link and watch the video if you are prepared to shed tears.
I couldn’t find Angry Johnny but this Poe song will do in a pinch to represent her. I love her voice and her musical style.
What a sleeze bag.
Bonnie Raitt’s early music is much like Sara McLachlan.
Mad Dogs @ 54
I used to like that one until the big honking public radio station here used it for every damn pledge drive.
Every. Damn. Pledge. Drive.
Voices–Stevie Nicks, Gladys Knight, Linda Rondstat, and one of my old favorites, Cleo Laine (”Please don’t talk about me when I’m gone,” “Give me a pigfoot and a bottle of beer,” and a host of others. Sarah Vaughn too.
Patti Smith.
Good night people. Work is too soon, and has too many letters to be confused with fun.
lina @ 56
I’ve always been fond of her duets with Emmylou Harris such as “Falling Down” on Western Wall – The Tucson Sessions.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 60
I love Poe!!
TRex @ 57
Oh man did she rock! I used to play the whole Peekaboo tape during lunch hour at the Catholic high school I went to and enjoy watching the scared jocks and preppies walk all the way around the gym to use another entrance to avoid me and my 2 trenchcoat wearing friends. This was circa 1986, long before Columbine fucked up that bit of goth fashion.
One of the most underrated bands of the 80’s:
Romeo Void, “Never Say Never”
Emmylou Harris has had an amazing career. I still have her mid-late seventies albums on vinyl. She is still going strong after more than thirty years. TRex do you know if Howie Klein was at Reprise records when Emmylou had her best LP’s with Warner-Reprise?
I’m gonna throw one out–just to see if anyone remembers:
Ellen McIlwaine. Tremendous vocal range and can play slide guitar with the best of `em.
lina @ 62
Tell me more.
I often worship Sara MacLachlan. Jill Sobule is awesome and funny and sometimes heartwrenching (get “Jesus Was a Dreidel Spinner” for your next holiday gathering!) And Heart in their prime were all a teenage boy needed.
I’m gonna say one thing:
Sarah Vaughn
Talk amongst yourselves.
The Roche Sisters
Bonnie Raitt
Janis Joplin
I have been listening to Yoko Kanno’s “Adieu” and I just love it. Anyone know this singer? Cowboy Bepop soundtrack. My sons introduced me to her music.
T- @ 72
those early albums with “Angel from Montgomery” and “Everything that touches me.”
The first time I ever heard Sarah M., I asked “is that Bonnie Raitt?”
TRex @ 69
Yeah! Romeo Void, Siouxsie, Jane Siberry, all excellent!
Watch Grace Slick on Monterey Pop. You’ll want to jump into the screen.
TRex @ 67
Do you see what I mean now? We share a musical taste brain. I may not have all the b side stuff from Tori Amos but I certainly have every album released in the states too.
Of course, while we are mentioning favorite female vocalists, before I started working with her here, Donita Sparks from L7 made my list of female rock vocalists whenever asked this question. I loved everything L7 did in the 90s and it feels so cool/weird to work with someone on a project later in life who you really admire.
Balrog @ 78
favorite Grace Slick song: “Today”
And why were there videos in the 80s?
Ladies and gentlemen, Patty Smyth.
I won’t grow up. I won’t.
Redshift – You misspelled Sara’s last name (full disclosure – so did I). It’s McLachlan.
Balrog @ 78
And watch Mama Cass Elliot going “oh, wow” during the Janis Joplin set…. :)

Balrog @ 78

lina @ 80
Exactly. Haunting…
I’m old, so I associate the 80s with Madonna and Cyndie Lauper and Whitney Houston and Ronald Reagan.

Ahem. From the Wikipedia entry for Siouxsie and the Banshees:
“Siouxsie and the Banshees state their influences among others as: T Rex, David Bowie, The Doors, The Beatles, The Stooges and The Velvet Underground.”
Balrog @ 78
Do they do White Rabbit?
T- @ 92
Not at Monterey (at least on the DVD). But watch anyway. They are stunning.

DADT and DOMA notwithstanding, the BigDog’s working his way back into my good graces, but slowly. This was certainly the right step. Where’s our current President on this issue?
lina @ 88
You didn’t look under enough rocks back then. All that sugary gooey pop back then sent me fleeing into the netherworld of the goth/Alternative music scene. That was back when Alternative meant something and you had to go searching the back bins of dirty inner city record stores to find the artists.
Musicland and Camelot Music back then would never stock anything from The Cure or Siouxsie and the Banshees or The Replacements or The Pixies or anyone good. You had to really do research to even find out about those bands and then go on a hunt to find ways to buy the record or tape. Now I can download all those artists ten seconds from now on Napster.
TRex @
50
heh.
Balrog @ 87
All of “Surrealistic Pillow” (try to imagine what it was like for fat, ready to retire army sergeants doing inspections and finding that in the bottom of my locker…) is quite good, including “Today.” But, after many years of listening, I’d have to conclude that “After Bathing at Baxters” was probably their best. After all, just how many rockers (acid or otherwise) have done a song about a character in a James Joyce novel? :)
For the big money:
Who is Anabella Lwin, and why?
Some may call it sexist, but female vocalists would take 99 of 100 top vocalist spots hands-down.
Don’t know if it’s because of their vocal range or sumthin’ else.
So there!
God, I miss those days of Tori w/the band.
Hang ten, honey.
Thanks for posting that. Good times.

Balrog @ 98
The outrageous story of Bowwowwow has its beginnings in 1980, when the former band members of Adam and the Ants consulted Malcolm Mclaren (creator of The Sex Pistols) about refreshing their image. He suggested that they abandon their leader, Adam Ant, and form a new band. The story takes a youthful turn when a 14 year-old girl, Myant Myant Aye, an immigrant from Burma, took a job at a London dry-cleaners. She was singing to the radio one day at work when a friend of McLaren heard her singing and told her that a new band was holding an audition for a singer. She tried out and got the job, changing her name to Annabella Lwin. The combination of Annabella’s sexy teen allure, the band’s pulsating tribal rhythms, and the provocative, sex-laden lyrics, sung passionately and breathlessly by Annabella, virtually guaranteed that Bowwowwow would make a splash on both sides of the Atlantic, which they soon did.

But the interesting thing is that it has never occurred to me to be in the least bit disheartened about the development of the dialogue here at FDL.
Perhaps I am an optimist, but it appears to me that with each passing day, our numbers and strength grow. Nietzche once stated “What is happiness? The feeling that power is growing, that resistance is overcome.” That is the feeling that one often gets watching the development of FDL and the progressive blogosphere.
I feel nothing but excitement and enthusiasm for what the future holds for FDL – both with regard to our shared conversation in the comments section, and the many powerful and unprecedented ways in which we unite to create political change.
We may argue amongst ourselves on an regular basis about any number of matters of both style and substance, but the critical thing is that we all share an understanding of a common progressive agenda, and we all can identify the people and forces that are acting against us. Of that I am fairly certain.
Hey Lina who did you lobby for? Any pointers you would care to share when lobbying the heathens?

hi P4/4!
OK some current faves – Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Lene Lovich, Anne and Nancy Wilson of Heart, Harriet Wheeler of the Sundays, Deva Premal, Suzanne Sterling… most the music I listen to are female vocalists.
Sorry to miss the language thread. I read a lot of the comments today between scans at work (tee hee) and I think the thing that resonated with me the most was what someone said about the people who behave the worst are the ones who lament the lack of civility. The response to Webb is a perfect example. Who in their right mind thinks it’s ok for the VP to tell a senator to “go fuck himself” but thinks it’s rude for Webb to “disrespect” Bush? Personally I read blogs like this or the Rude Pundit precisely because the language is coarse and visceral. Because blogs like this articulate what I am feeling so well. The right has been kicking this country while it is down and now they want our sympathy? In the words of some anchor baby I heard once. “Boo fricken hoo!”

Hi Dana!
TSF–I too noticed that TRex doesn’t ask what we want from the grocery store anymore. Also, hi, all you Webb-constituents! George Will had a whole column on him today, about what a “boor” he is. Just pitiful. In the same pages was an article focusing on Webb’s belief that he is being painted as a “hot head” by the WH. (Will leaves out the bully-ish line by Bush, “I didn’t ask you that. I asked you how your boy is.” Without that reprimand, Webb’s response is less understandable.)

What minor blogger needs an FDL Flamewar traffic boost for the weekend that we could notify?
Fini — I imagine them slinking around, outside the barn, sorta an EPU version of Mickey and Judy “Let’s put on a blogwar!!”
Hi mods -
Thank you for your work.
I found a new (to me) wordpress glitch:
WP kept recycling my newly entered comments through the same location (145, then 146) on the thread.
WP lef a later comment (154) unchanged throughoout this events.
Clearing the cache didn’t work. Ending and restarting Firefox did work.
[Mac OS X]
Not a complaint, just a Groundhog glitch report.
Thanks again for your work.
[Mod note; it’s our pleasure, and thanks for the heads up on the WP glitch]
TRex @ 181
Now you’re toying with my emotions. I do have to admit, though, that there needs to be a little stink to the Limburger to make it interesting. Otherwise, it’s just sucky cheese. Know what I mean?
How ya doing, Trex? You’ve taken a lot of crap lately and it hurt a little bit to watch it happen. I suppose it’ll happen again, sometime. There’s no point in walking the razor’s edge if you don’t catch a nick now and again; but I’m a big, strong he-man (don’t burst my bubble here), sort of individual and it made me cry.
Nietzsche said that thing about adversity making one stronger. I always thought it was god’s irony that he died of syphilis.
I hope you keep on doing what you do; there’s those who will not like it, but there are those of us who will love and honor you for it.
I’ve gotta go to bed.
Peace, love! Out, here.
Dana @ 182
Dana rocks!
See, if people keep complaining to and about the mods, they’ll all quit and then there’ll be no moderation here at all, and we’ll all be radical unmoderated leftists.
kirk, why do you hate the mods?
/s
Barbara Boxer’s petition to redeploy troops NOW.
I keep repeating to myself that it’s all just PR, but it has been very, very hard to keep my cool at points. Very hard.
Did I mention that it’s been kind of hard to keep my cool?
Hmm. No one came back about Ellen McIlwaine. Understandable–she stopped recording in this country in the mid-`70s and moved to Calgary, I think. Still touring, still playing locally there.
Here’s what she sounded like in the early `70s.
And a too short clip of “We the People” that shows off a little slide and vocals.
gettin more ice for my favorite theropod right now.
keep cool. stay in skool.
don’t ever change. KIT. BFF.
And of course, there’s always Annie.
Julia.
Hi TSF, lol. You sweety pie.
TeddySanFran @ 203
it’s a projection from my internalized self-hating radical – really hung up on rebelling against moderation.
There are two ways to drive traffic to one’s under-utilized “lefty” blog.
1. Take under-the-table wingnut welfare and pose as a progressive Democrat (the [dangerstein] approach).
2. Attack a successful progressive blog (the Tom W. approach) whose readers are a little outta sorts cuz not all our shithot favorites (lookin’ atcha, John Laesch!) won their elections. Get ‘em all steamed about some language used by the gays who post for the grrls.
For best results, combine #1 and #2. In any case, stand back. Check technorati hourly. Watch traffic soar.
kirk murphy @ 210
Well, you know what Oscar Wilde said. “Nothing succeeds like excess.” :)
I pee-arrrrgh, dahling. I pee-arrrrgh!
TeddySanFran @ 212
I don’t see many ways to improve on this analysis.
Everyone is so nicey-picey tonight, I don’t know what to think. Everyone’s saying “hi,” singing harmony across the waters, playing tunes for each other. TRex! Are the mods altering posts (what did we used to call that? I forgot)?
Barbara Boxer rocks! The creepy guy who was on Hardball last night, advisor or something to Rice, was Satterfield. Anybody hear him? Also, Scarborough, between yelling fests, had someone one who claimed this is all “talk” from Bush–bluster that will change in a few weeks, months, whatever. So tired of all the posturing, and pundits have the nerve to accuse Webb of it? Gack.
montag @ 211
All too well – fortunately, I survived the data acquisition.
I love Annie Lennox but that particular song Julia never did much for me. This is my favorite Annie song.
TRex @ 205
Hang in there, Therapod!
Hi Dana!
thnx Fini, love that one too. lotsa angels.
TSF, LOL!
TeddySanFran @ 212
I’ll remember this for the future. I’ve got a blog suffering from low traffic, but maybe if I posted more often than every couple of weeks more people might show up, eh?
You know, the truth is, we get an incredibly low number of trolls. And I don’t think anyone is getting moderated out tonight. We’ve kind of relaxed the trolling laws for now, but they’re still not coming over the castle walls in droves.
I guess what struck me about all this was how intense and personal the hate out there is. But then again, I shoot from the hip.
Last night was pretty rough, though, because it was sort of accepted that I was going to keep my gun on the table. So it kind of felt like a big pile-on.
Funny how I’m sort of becoming our lightning rod when just a few months ago, all those people could talk about was Jane, Jane, Jane. (”Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!!”) Ol’ bad, eeeeevil Jane Hamsher, that crazy lady from Hollyweird! Didn’t she kill somebody?
Now it’s my turn.
I’m the New Jan Brady!
I’m trying to take it as a compliment.
Dana @ 215
All I heard was the yelling. But I also heard Buchanan say this:
“The Democrats can vote no on war spending if they have the guts.”
Oh man, if I weren’t just trying real hard not to swear right now I’d say bad words.
Republifucks don’t have the guts to advocate it, so they send out Loose Cannon Buchanan.
They want the war to end, I think, but they are such passive aggressive *$&%%^%&%$&**#$&$
that they can’t even advocate it. Grrr.

I for one am glad all that meta’s outta our system. Every once in a while, I carry the pink rag rugs outta the kitchen and onto the back porch to smack ‘em around. Not sure they are any less dusty or dirty when I bring ‘em back in and lay ‘em down — but I feel lots better.
Thanks Jane, Pach, TRex (and Christy, who got off scot-free considering how early I get up out here PST to make coffee and say HI most mornings!!) for all your efforts last nite. Let’s do it again (not soon!)
Love ya.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 217
Someday, I’ll call you on the phone and sing it to you. The break is the best part:
“I must be hallucinating,
Watching angels celebrating.
Could this be reactivating,
All my senses?
Dislocating…”
TRex, as unintended as it may be, a compliment it surely is.
Dana @ 221
Here’s what’s funny — I thought I’d overlooked ‘Hi Dana!’ When I tried to re-post it, WordPress software gave me that error message with the big exclamation point saying I’d already posted that comment. Which was sorta the point, actually.
So I bolded it, slipping it past the clever WordPress!
Margot @ 224
I would think that being passive-aggressive would be a prerequisite for working in the Nixon White House. :)
Not much different with the current bozo-in-chief.

I’m going with mood-altering posts myself.
love it when the theropod talks about keeping his gun on the table.

I’m surprised that no-one’s mentioned some of my faves, like:
Loreena McKennitt
Melissa Etheridge
Chrissy Hynde
Annie Haslam
and I agree with these choices:
Kate Bush
Joni Mitchell
Janis Joplin
Grace Slick
The Wilson Sisters
and more obscurely:
Mary McLaughlin
June Tabor
Sinead O’Connor – Mandinka

Malacandra @ 235

TeddySanFran @ 234
You’re a dirty man.

hi jane -
hope His Master Kobe (and you!) came through the freeze warm and toasty.
Margot, I’ve heard Buchanan say that before–close the purse–and I agree that they all know, Dems and Rethugs, that it’s not gonna happen. It’s like Dare and Double-Dare.
TRex, it did seem like a pile-on at times last night. I found it a difficult read, left the thread, went back to catch Digby, then moved on. That’s what happens when criticism is invited–someone starts and soon it goes from “fair enough” to “ugly.” I also totally disagreed with the idea that fdl threads are too often scant in substance and off-topic. Maybe I’m just used to the melody. I like the long, careful comments followed by occasional rifle shots from rwcole and others. It’s the mix that makes the comment threads interesting. In fact, the threads here are the best I’ve seen.
TeddySanFran @ 237
Diamanda Galas – if you don’t care for her voice, you may still have to give it up for this:
mebbe we have a song we need to learn.
TRex @ 223
What I found really odd was the unusual number of folks who were adamant that they no longer visited FDL, and yet they all magically somehow showed up to whip some ass.
Did somebody post an FDL invitation over at an S/M site?
And does that mean we all have to wear latex and masks now?
Oh boy, can’t wait!
I think I need to crochet that on to a pillow for my living room.
omg P4/4 — DG was here at Election time and we totally spaced. When I came up for air on Friday, I remember asking the fiance, “when’s that friend of yours and Jane’s coming to SF for her concert?” Of course, it was Election Eve or some such crazy day….

I think you have to be a peeper-person.
Anyway.
Everybody have a good night. I’m off to bed.
Thanks for coming, as always.
TeddySanFran @ 184
Yeah, that’s a pretty stupid “explanation.” Even if there was no one else within earshot, which seems unlikely, here’s a reasonable guess as to how it came out:
1. The White House leaked a version of the conversation edited to make Webb look like a psycho Vietnam Vet (gee, where have we seen that tactic before?)
2. Responsible reporters checked with Webb’s office, and got the rest of the conversation, which made Bush look like an asshole. Novak, of course, didn’t bother.
TRex @ 254
heh.
Dana @ 254
Here’s looking at you, panopticon :)
W’s leaking like crazy — I betcha he leaked the Webb story, or confirmed the Senate Dem minder/staffer’s version of it, at least. I’m also convinced W leaked the Hadley memo, it’s just so ill-thought-out and fratboy simple. Fraidy cat with his finger on the button. Goddess help us all.
So, Redshift, y’all rested up yet for your 2008 Senate race? Sure is fun when they’re just two years apart! Mark gonna run? Mr.Liz bowing out? Macaca up for another swing at the pinata?
excellent psycho VN vet point, hadn’t caught that one….
TSF, Word I hear from the inside is Mark may run for governor again, not go for the senate.
Dana @ 260
Oh, that’s right, VA has that odd “you can’t succeed yourself, but we may need you again sometime” single-term governor limit.
TeddySanFran @ 261
Yep. just you wait – half-way through his tour of…term of office, he’ll be rolling grenades into the tents…offices of senior members of his squad…committees.
That’s how it is, T-Rex. You get into the arena, and here come teh lions.
It wasn’t as bad as you thought last night. A great many of the critical comments were addressing the important issues of language and borders (if any) that should be applied to our discourse. You just happened to be the originating target du jour.
But–I’m an author and speak from experience here–even one bad review sticks in the craw and gnaws at the memory long after the praise and even the awards fade into “That-Was-Then” Land.
You want to play? Get used to it. Not that the sticking and the gnawing gets any better. But that’s the price of staying in the game.
And you’re awfully good at this game.
Webb got the Foreign Affairs Committee assignment, which means six weeks of someone other than just Teefs Biden to watch!
I think Webb could be “that guy” — especially after six weeks of introduction to the American people, contrasted with others without a boy in the fight.

TeddySanFran @ 258
Oh, we don’t get that much rest! We have elections every year; next year is the entire House of Delegates and State Senate, and redistricting isn’t that far off. We’re doing great on candidate recruitment on that front.
I think Mark Warner is a definite possibility (though he would also be a shoo-in for another term at governor), and there are plenty of signs that Allen thinks he’s running, which I find amusing. However, the latest rumor is that John Warner isn’t going to retire. Don’t know if he can’t stand the thought of that idiot Allen taking over for him or if he thinks he’s the only one who can beat Mark Warner, or what.
What’s this – a music thread without Donita? Aren’t we about 12 hours early?
Lots has happened in VA since I ran a statewide Dem Senate race in 1978, losing to the guy who lost to JWarner. I did not know he faced no opposition in 2002, for instance, or that he was now as centrist as described in wikipedia.
Seems like he could face, and lose, a challenge to his right in the GOP in 2008.
hi Titanyum!
Redshift, I hope we are “doing great on candidate recruitment” because the House is a big mess. I hear that McDonnell, according to the poor staff there, is meaner than Allen. Love to see him go.
Hi, Teddy!
I have spent the better part of the evening trying to catch up with this thread. Whew!
I guess I missed something last night. Can somebody tell me in 25 words or less (or more) what happened? Is it worth going and reading it all?
Neurophius, it is worth reading.
Feelings and teeth were bared but no skin broken. People love TRex or they don’t. Necessary discussions, slights rehashed, some fences mended, some broken, catharsis.
neurophius @ 274
Ummm: “c**t, c**ty, c**nt-c**t,” … “racist” “sexist” “calm down” “get away from me with that!” “shit, piss, corruption” “take that, swine” and some “attaboy, therapod.”
That pretty much covers it. :)

I’m glad we had the discussion jane began last night, but it was hard for me to watch (read?).
I can’t help noticing what shrinky people call “process” – the manner in which we interact (as opposed to “content” – the information we share).
I also can’t help noticing what we beard-stroking couch vultures call “defense mechanisms”.
In shrinky-speak, the DM’s are tools – screens, really – that insulate us from intolerable emotional distress.
The best-known defense mech is denial: pretend it ain’t there, and you don’t have to worry (as much).
Another big defense mech is projection.
Projection is the attribution to others (external and thus “outside” of one’s self) of “what I can’t bear to find in myself”.
Think of the homophobic preachers.
[Yecch.]
Last night I saw reasoned discussion about ideas, and I thought that rocked. I also saw increasingly high levels of emotional discharge with scant relation to the topic/thread.
The “unearned” emotional discharge is what I call projection.
Blergh.
Not fun, and a lot was sent at you.

I heard about this ten years ago. More like drive-by mastectomies. It was the idea of some wacko doctor in the Seattle area as a way of cutting health-care costs.
I could understand the insurers trying to implement this, but a doctor? Gimme a break. If I didn’t know better, I would have bet his name was Welbeck.
I just went and took a peak at the “Language” thread from last night, and OMG, 635 entries. Is that an all-time record?
I’m not going to be able to read it tonight. Tomorrow, maybe.

new thread
Hey all — servers are back up and running, and there is a fresh thread up above for the reading. Sorry about the glitch!
There was a glitch last night, too, 10:00 pst Couldn’t get in anywhere except government websites (!) like NOAA and the weather service. I know KO was talking about Gingrich’s clever plan to stop all bad things in the world from happening but sheesh…
Actually, the whole meta thing did not bother me. These things happen in every online community from time to time. They go in cycles. Sometimes you have to blow out the engine a bit.
They shouldn’t be regular, and there’s still a backstory about some of these people and the history of their, er, interest in this sitethat I’d rather not get into. We don’t initiate fights across the left, and we’d prefer it if others who care about movement politics would do the same.
I have and had no problem listening to the critics, and I held nothing back in my replies and responses. There’s a lot that people don’t get about what we’re doing, and there’s an old model of 90’s liberal single issue complaint politics that still has its manifestation online. It has its perspective, and sometimes its points to make, but it really has no idea how to build progressive movement politics, and so the admonitions that we’re gonna derail the movement are just silly.
But, all that said, I’m still mulling over all the commentary for my own purposes, even if I pretty much had my say throughout the thread and to a lessar extent, over at Watson’s place.
TRex @ 205
Very EPU at 10:30 in the morning but as someone who stayed on that thread for hours while it was happening, it was hard for me to keep my gun on the table. I can only imagine how it felt for you, TRex. I’m sending healing soothing energy your way with a big kiss from Bad Mimi thrown in.

Ahh, Catharsis: the island Hera would travel to, annually, to renew her virginity. I find succulent irony in that word, juxtaposed with the rationale that the building of borders revolved around the “C” concept.
Tell me, though, if it’s not EPU’d, was any virginity actually renewed?
JohnSwifty @ 321
Whoops, it’s “Canathus“. Either I’ve been away from the Power of Myth too long, or my dyslexia is showing. That’s not terribly ironic, either way.
“But you know, I’m a sexist who hates women. Which is why my music collection is full of them. And my bookshelf. And my life.”
dude, you’ve been piled on here pretty good and perhaps a bit unfairly, but i think you fail to grasp that it’s not about you and your feelings about women, but about others who perceive your language as hurtful.
your use of “b!tch” and worse is not offensive to me and probably most other readers, but on a public forum like this it’s impossible to know how deeply these words can cut. what if “b!tch” was the name of choice for a woman who was beaten by her husband daily and every time she hears it or reads it the memories come flooding back? is your desire to freely use this language worth the negative feelings that it can evoke in people–especially when there are so many other words that could be used to equal effect?
i’m not for censorship, but maybe a little self restraint can go a long way in certain situations. i don’t think that’s a compromise of your intellectual integrity, but being slicker with your choice of words given your audience at any given moment.
**and fwiw, i’ve been practically lynched here before for similar insensitive statements…
Pach at 319: “There’s a lot that people don’t get about what we’re doing, and there’s an old model of 90’s liberal single issue complaint politics that still has its manifestation online.”

TRex: the reason Tori Amos can get away with this and people are still giving you a hard time is the same reason that black rappers can get away with using the n-word and Michael Richards can’t.
Sorry to give you a hard time, I usually enjoy your writing, but you’re a lot less amusing when you’re being defensive. You could say “my bad” and move on, or you could make like George Bush and never, ever, ever admit the slightest error in judgment. Your choice.
