The NYTimes spotlights one of the all-too-often neglected areas of diplomatic negotiation: the family meal.
The problem: Americans, as a whole, have lost touch with the ritual of the shared homemade meal. Although we eat at home a lot, the food often is from restaurants or the prepared foods section of the grocery store. Families eat in shifts and leave the television on. The sandwich has become the most popular dinner entree.
No wonder we have no idea how to behave at Thanksgiving.
I have a friend whose Thanksgiving meal went south just after her grandmother called her brother a cowardly Communist. Another friend’s nightmare began when her mother’s new boyfriend started talking about breasts, and he wasn’t referencing the turkey.
The article goes on to discuss the potential fiscal viability of a dysfunctional family problem-solving chatroom for holiday emergencies…and I just started laughing because it could probably work as a business model with the right amount of tweaking, just based on the stories that I hear from folks about their own family issues.
So today, I thought we could do a little sharing amongst our little online family, before we all skitter off to far flung places across the country or across town, to stuff ourselves silly and watch football into the wee hours and contemplate that "just one more little slice" of pie.
Here's a little "getting to know you" quiz for us all:
1. Three songs you can — and do — listen to again and again.
2. Three movies you can — and do — watch over and over.
3. Three dishes you would choose for your last meal.
4. Three most relaxing vacation spots you've ever visited.
5. Three books that you consider great reads.
6. Three shows that you consider the best on television, past and present.
I look forward to reading the answers on this one. To all and sundry, have a very happy Thanksgiving. And thanks to all of you for being a part of our little family here at FDL.

Jeez, I’m still depressed from the last thread.
3 things I would eat though.
A HUGE T-Bone,My grandmothers brown beans, and fried ‘taters an’ onions .
Cain’t beat it.
Christy! Happy Thanksgiving. Am contentedly awaiting older egrDaughter and egrSon from afar.
Quite the merry crowd today at the pie shop. People were talking to strangers and enjoying even waiting in line.
Btw this pie shop is where the pumpkin muffins came from, and they do mail order. Just in case you want to treat yourself for Christmas.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I recommend celebrating the holiday by supporting Ciro Rodriguez for Congress in the runoff against Republican Rep. Henry Bonilla in Texas 23. This is our last chance at a Democratic pick up in 2006.
Unfortunately, the authors of SYFPH diaries at Daily Kos are not supporting Rodriguez. I guess they are not committed to electing Democrats. But we can. Donate to Ciro, or volunteer for his campaign. This race can be won, as Democrats received more votes in the open primary than Republican Henry Bonilla, who was the only Republican on the ballot. Bonilla also failed to clear 50% despite spending $2 million.
It’s only 5 am here so I can’t think of much but coffee, but Happy Thankgiving to Christie, Jane, Pach, Trex and all the FDL pups.
In an otherwise uneven piece at salon.com, Walter Shapiro has a nicely condensed paragraph about this holiday:
petedownunder @ 6
Pete, if it’s 5am then you are already in Thanksgiving! Hope it’s a good one.
Here is the location of the Larry Kissell Recount Fund via egrBlue.
I know people are pretty much tapped out, but if you can spare some funds they are in need.
Larry PERSONALLY loaned the campaign about $40,000. I hope we can help with the recount and with the debt. The N.C. Democratic Party, bless their hearts, have already coughed up the maximum allowed.
I’ve got Karen Carter on the page too, just scroll down to near the bottom.
On the topic of Thanksgiving, something failed on the power grid in our neighborhood and our house was without electricity from about 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. local time. I am thankful this happened today and not tomorrow, when it would have made a disaster of the Thanksgiving meal we will be preparing.

But what about Ciro Rodriguez? He is running against a Republican in a runoff on 12 DEC, and he can win this race based on the results of the open primary on election day. If we are committed to elected Democrats to the House, we have to support Ciro. The DCCC, the Texas Democratic Party, activist Latino organizations and local Texas Democrats are all supporting Ciro. We must too. Please add Ciro to your list. Besides, he is a true progressive Democrat. Let us be Democrats and let us support Ciro.
Thanks for the prompt Christy! Hope everyone has a happy and civil (in the real sense, not the Joe Lieberman sense) Thanksgiving.

A couple of months ago I ddn’t think I’d be alive today, so this is going to be a wonderful Thanksgiving in my home this year.
For those here who haven’t tried it yet, I’m engaging in a delightful bit of Holiday activism aimed at gently altering the course of Human Civilization by touching the hearts of others. Your help would be appreciated in passing this around to your friends and family.
Thanks.
May the Love that knows no Compehension find refuge in your hearts and in your homes forever.

Okay, here are my answers:
1. Three songs you can — and do — listen to again and again. Lately it has been: Get Here by Oleta Adams; Desert Rose by Sting; and Natural Woman by Carole King. (No idea why, because they really don’t go together, but they’ve been my repeat choices lately on the iPod.)
2. Three movies you can — and do — watch over and over. Out of Africa, Spirited Away and Love, Actually (lately, it’s been comfort movies).
3. Three dishes you would choose for your last meal. Roasted garlic mashed potatoes with port wine sauce from Spago, my Granny’s homemade macaroni and cheese (if only to be able to eat with her one last time…miss her this time of year), and Granny’s yummy rice custard. (Mmmm…starch fest for me, I suppose. lol)
4. Three most relaxing vacation spots you’ve ever visited. Hilton Head in the winter; Disney World in the late Fall; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC pretty much any time.
5. Three books that you consider great reads. This one is tough, but I’m going to corss-genres here: Dune by Frank Herbert; any book in the George R.R. Martin Song of Ice and Fire saga; and pretty much anything by Dickens, although it is tough to beat Oliver Twist. But SO many more…
6. Three shows that you consider the best on television, past and present. The shows I miss: West Wing, MASH and All In The Family.

Seeing [dangerstein] on FOX identified as a “Democratic Strategist” (ascribing racial and genderexpression stereotypes in this newly hyped unwed mothers study) makes me wonder — how can Democrats protect our brand from such poachers?
Coca-Cola would never let any ex-employee (who subsequently worked for Pepsi head-to-head against Coke!!) go on the teevee and be identified as a Coke Strategist.
Protecting brand identity is very important, and will only increase in importance as we go forward. Can’t we demand [dangerstein] shed OUR brand ID, encouraging him to adopt his own, perhaps “IDiot”?

I guess Gov. Perry will waffle until he and his cronies can find the worst day possible to hold the runoff. This is all the more reason for us to support Ciro, for we need someone who will challenge Republicans both in the House and in Texas. This is the real race of December, and all of us who are Democrats need to support him. Let us add another seat to the House, and let us be true Democrats.

OT, but funny:
My wife has a new job mentoring intern student teachers. She works with eleven of them. One teaches at a public grade school full of fundamentalist and evangelical kids. Some of these kids don’t seem excited about their studies, cause – ya know – Jesus is coming back real soon.
But this intern has come up with a four-word phrase which seems to work every time.
“You’ll be blank – blank-.”
any guesses on the other two words?
Three is hard, but I’ll try to follow the directions.
TV shows . . . Northern Exposure, MASH, and West Wing
Relaxing vacations spots . . . camping along the Northern California coast in October after all the tourists are home and the kids are in school; fishing off the dock at my parent’s home in Southern Illinois; Rocky Mountain National Park in February, during the week when no one else is there.
Songs . . . lots to choose from . . . how about Canadian Brass’ Saints Hallelujah! (listened to it just yesterday after seeing Wynton Marsallis lead the New Orleans-style funeral procession at Ed Bradley’s memorial service on C-SPAN!); Handel’s Messiah; and Jimmy Buffett’s Gypsies in the Palace. (Lots more to choose from, but these are a good three.)
Movies . . . Cinema Paradiso, Princess Bride, and Bull Durham.
Meal . . . an appetizer of potstickers and shu mai (with a good Gewurtramiener), a Chicago-style deep dish pizza for a main course (with a hearty Zinfandel), and after a break to cleanse the palate, a German himmeltorte for dessert (finished off with a nice port).
Books . . . This is the toughest, because I’ve got too many around to choose from. . . .Gotta have at least one science fiction book, so how about Stardance by Spider and Jeanne Robinson; The Language of Life by Bill Moyers; and the Bible. (surprise, surprise)
Wow, more mentions of “Soap” than I imagined there would be! Love it!

Home for the Holidays (all the sad, funny, familial angst you could want without the airfare)
The Fifth Element (because love is redemptive)
The Matrix (because I want to kick ass like Carrie Ann Moss; I’d settle for being able to wear a shiny cat-suit like her)
3. Three dishes
As enjoyed at Emeril’s NOLA restaurant, on one of the very best chick-friend vacations I ever had:
Fire-roasted duck breast served with a nice shiraz
Garlic-mashed sweet and russet potatoes
Bread pudding with buttermilk ice cream
Honorable mention: Sesame-seared tuna roll at Cafe Appareil with a little zinfandel
4. Three most relaxing vacation
My folks’ place outside Marquette in the Upper Peninsula during the month of July (cheap, occasional guilt-trip, always someone ready to help with berry-picking or drinking margaritas while sitting on the beach on Superior’s shore);

My own whirlpool tub when the kids are staying overnight with friends (cheap, satisfying, good wine cellar in the basement)
5. Three books
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (reads like fiction);
Collapse by Jared Diamond (even my kids love it);
Toss up: Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott, or Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris (because we need short, sweet, funny and good writing to punctuate our lives, like little chocolates from time to time).
6. Three shows
Carl Sagan’s Cosmos (always felt like I was both significant and insignificant at the same time when watching this show);
Northern Exposure (zen – no other television show ever really got zen like this one did);
X-Files (satisfies the tinfoil hatter in me, and Duchovny? Yum).
Honorable mention: any National Geographic special featuring Jacques Cousteau, because he was simply good for you and for the earth.
Happy T-Day, FirePups!
Always difficult for the humanities major to narrow things down to just three things. It’s a big world. :)
1. Three songs you can — and do — listen to again and again.
Leo Kottke’s version of “Eight Miles High”
“Boogie Woogie Waltz” – Weather Report
“Dolphins” – Fred Neil
2. Three movies you can — and do — watch over and over.

3. Three dishes you would choose for your last meal.

The wienerschnitzel from Siechens in Wiesbaden.
My own chocolate and orange cheesecake.
4. Three most relaxing vacation spots you’ve ever visited.
Never had the money and time together for a real vacation.
5. Three books that you consider great reads.
Ah, well, that’s tough to narrow down to three. Probably, Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow (I might be the only person in the world who’s read it cover to cover three times), Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men and Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude.
6. Three shows that you consider the best on television, past and present.
Can’t say about the present. No television. In the past, was always amused by “WKRP,” rarely missed “The Dick Cavett Show” when it was on, and I still think Edward R. Murrow’s “Harvest of Shame” was the best television documentary ever produced.
Oh wow, three per category is way too tuff so I’m goona cheat and just go with one per. And no laffin! I mean it!
Song: Layla. There’s one for the ages, Eric and Duane etal. There are some surprising connections behind the story.
Movie: No, not Citizen Kane, not Casablanca. Predator. Yeah, so sue me. Full length cartoon sans animation.
Last meal: Ham and beans with lotsa ketchup. Corn bread, spinach salad, sweat tea. Love them beans. Give me gas bad. Circumstances of the meal obviates the need to worry about that. Heh.
Relaxing vacation: Right here at home. Fun vacation, Pre Katrina Mardi Gras.
Great read: Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal. For reading during that relaxing vacation.
Tee Vee show: Twilight Zone. No contest.

Tammy Duckworth has a head start. This woman already belongs to the ages. Most of us have to die first. I like Duckworth. A lot.

Again, yet again!! — my enthusiasm translates in the toobz as sarcasm, for which I accept full responsibility. I love Dune. I’ve read all the sequels, and the odd Young-Herbert-penned prequel as well. Still can’t decide between the “Blond Dune” and the “Dark Dune” movie versions. But they are both worth watching, although SciFi has butchered the “Blonde Dune” version and I encourage all to avoid the result. The butchered version includes storyboard-like panels and narrative transitions that (a) give too much away and (b) corrupt the sequence.
I too am an unashamed Dune fan.

And, it’s a double entendre. :)
1. Three songs you can — and do — listen to again and again. a)”Over and Over” by Erin Bode, b) “In Liverpool” by Suzanne Vega, c)anything at all by Led Zeppelin. I hate this category, because there’s such a vast, rich cornucopia of music to love.
2. Three movies you can — and do — watch over and over. a)”Pride and Prejudice” either the Colin Firth or Keira Knightley versions — they’re my wife’s favorites actually, but I enjoy them too; b) The Lord of the Rings (yeah, I’m a LOTR geek too; c)any anime by Miyazaki. I hate this category as well, Hitchcock, Bogart, Hepburn, John Ford, Scorsese, Altman, where to stop?
3. Three dishes you would choose for your last meal. Yikes. Today, I guess I would want Liver n’ Onions, fried okra and collard greens. I’m feeling particularly southern today.
4. Three most relaxing vacation spots you’ve ever visited. Chicago, Illinois (on July 4); Mackinac Island, Michigan; Grafton, Illinois (you had to be there).
5. Three books that you consider great reads. a)Lord of the Rings (again); b)Moby Dick (worth the effort); c)Summer of ‘49 by David Halberstam
6. Three shows that you consider the best on television, past and present. a)The X-Files (and its like-minded predecessor, The Twilight Zone); b)Monty Python (inspired lunacy); c)The Fugitive. I don’t watch much tv these days.
We’ve already got one. I come here for emergencies.

Love that to death – but wasn’t it made for TV – not that that’s a bad thing – but I worry about category creep: Next thing ya know we’re eating our favorite movies and watching our most relaxing vacation spots.
Katherine @ 80
Wow. Christy said nothing about “popular music” in posing the quiz. Why would you exclude your documentary teevee shows or movie choices? Eating the same things everyday certainly doesn’t exclude choosing something different — or even the same — for one’s last meal. Why would your book choices not be considered great reads, and how could we even consider them such without knowing what they are?
How can we know you, especially after we’ve told each other — and you! — so much about ourselves, if all we feel is that we’ve somehow made you unwelcome by participating joyfully with our pixel-friends here?
Wow.

Katherine at 82 — it doesn’t have to be something popular now. I mean, hello, I picked a Dickens book as one of my faves, and I swear I’m one of the nerdiest people that I know. It doesn’t have to be a pop song — I could have just as easily selected a Bach cello concerto or some DeBussy or Mozart for that matter, but I picked the three repeats of the last week or so for my tunes.
Truly, this isn’t a “who is coolest” kind of thing. More of a “what do YOU like” sort of thing. The overlap is fun — but it is the differences that are even more fun, I think.

For me, that’s a separate category — songs I can’t listen to over and over. It’s a great song — no question. Lyrically, I find it almost painful. That’s what Springsteen was after, of course. I wouldn’t change a note or a word, but I couldn’t listen over and over again. It’d be like having the Zapruder film on a tape loop.
Another one is “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight” by The Jam. Paul Weller wants to shake you up with that one — and by god, he does it in spades.

Well, that’s quick and crude and probably offers a confusing look into a slightly “off” person such as I am. I’ll check back in shortly to offer hellos to everyone and to read what I’m sure is great stuff about my friends above.
And I Give my Thanks to all of you.
Nate
Still, what was that line Cage used to say about his jacket in Wild at Heart? Something about an expression of individuality?
Sailor: “Hey – my snakeskin jacket! Thanks, baby. Did I ever tell you that this here jacket for me is a symbol of my individuality and my belief in personal freedom?”

Norske,
I’ve been invited to write monthly colmns for http://www.frontiersman.com/ and http://www.insurgent49.com . I finished one article – about Governor Sarah Palin’s hopes to include creationism in the classroom, in light of the Jones decision (Dover, PA) last December. The other one, about the July-August Lebanon oil spill, is quite long and detailed, but is coming along.
I’m working on four commissions, “Westchester Suite” for trumpet, French horn, trombone and organ; “Winter Songs,” for soprano, violin, clarinet and piano; a trombone quartet; and an octet for the Sitka School District.
I’m almost ready to put up a web site so I can share my music with friends here. A great book for getting a site going – if you’re Mac-based – is “Podcasting and Blogging with Garage Band and iWeb” by Robin Williams and John Tollett.

Since my family all live in ‘distant’ locations that tend to be my vacation spots:
1) My brother’s — which, by definition, means spending time out in his boat fishing for something…anything. Doesn’t really matter, since the important part is just spending the time with him and my niece and nephew.
2) My mom’s — which, by definition, means making sure beforehand that she has a list of chores ready for me that she can’t do for herself. Gives me a huge amount of pleasure to do them — and keeps me laughing whenever she tries to ‘help’ by offering (unsolicited) advice on the best way to do whatever.
3) My sister’s — which, by definition, means sipping wine and chatting and laughing with her while playing card games or watching movies (and still laughing) with my other niece and nephew until, literally, the sun comes up.

CLASSIC! Nice one!
Bush kneads Angela?
technically, that job falls to my upside-down alter-ego 3sivund, but thanks for the nudge!
A little diffuse, but good.
The one he appeared for two days before Election Day, a ten-year incumbant, lost soundly.
My first impulse when Bush came to town was to come up with some kind of community cleansing ceremony to disperse the smell of sulfer.
Then I thought, no, let the smell of sulfer stay to remind them.
Incumbent
This is the first time that I’ve ever commented on FDL, but I am a long time visitor to this site. Seems I always find something interesting and informative (and often funny)from all the wonderful writers and commenters of this site. Thanks so much for all that you do. I’m having a hard time focusing on work today (my mind keeps wandering towards tomorrow) and this thread made me smile — I am the youngest of ten, so you can imagine how holidays were when I was growing up. At any rate, here’s my first contribution to the FDL conversation.
Three songs: Lonely Teardrops – Jackie Wilson, Claire de Lune – Claude Debussy, Keep Me God – Iris DeMent
Three movies: Any of the old, old Cary Grant movies, Little Big Man, Dances With Wolves — because of its incredible cinematic beauty. The photography of that film just swept me away.
Three dishes: Would hate for it to be only three. My mother passed away in 1985 on Mother’s Day and when I think back to all the wonderful meals she prepared for her family, this is one that I always come back to. I picture a cold, windy, winter day and coming in the front door after school and she would have pinto beans with ham hock simmering away on the stove and then that night we would have those beans and ham with her pan fried potatoes, coleslaw, cornbread, and sweet iced tea. And if we were lucky, she would serve her absolutely incredible apricot pie.
Three vacation spots: They were all unplanned, sort of spur of the moment trips. We just wanted to get away and we had just a lovely time. Half Moon Bay, California — just a beautiful spot on this planet, San Francisco — love the city and we took the Wine Country Tour and just loved it, and Cape Canaveral, Florida — didn’t do anything, but sat on the beach looking out at the ocean and was just hypnotized.
Three books: Really hard to narrow this down to three – Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Growing Up by Russell Baker.
Three TV shows: I don’t know about the best, but I enjoy The Closer (although I haven’t seen it in a while…has it been cancelled?) and Good Eats by Alton Brown — he’s such a quirky personality and I always learn something from his show, and it’s hard to beat Countdown with Keith Olberman.
Sorry for such a long-winded post on my first time out. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you at FDL!
Welcome, Pegleg. Come back often.
johnSwifty @ 196
I don’t want a pickle/ just want to ride on my motorsickle
Just jumping in to recommend the last fiction book I read, which was one of the best I’ve read in years:
The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem.
3 songs: L. Armstrong, ‘Wonderful World’; Roberta Flack ‘First Time’; John Coltrane ‘Africa Brass’ Movies: ‘V fer Vendetta’; ‘Whale Rider’;’Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ they’re on the shelf. Last Meal: Jalapeno Bread Loaf, A Cuban Bowl, Margaritas. Vacate: Cannon Beach, Oregon(2 weeks caretaking my son’s place convinced), Summer Lake Hot Springs(.com) check it out! (best HS water any where & in the desert). Steens Mts, Oregon where you can meet the local ranchers at Alford Hot Springs. Books; Anything by Arturo Perez-Reverte; Halprine’s ‘Memoirs In an Ant-Proof Case’ very funny; ‘Moby Dick’. TV? All of K.O.’s Commentaries, ‘Colbert Show’ & All of Peter Falk in ‘Columbo’ series. Have a great ‘holidaze’ and remember America would be thought better of if we all could cut our consuming habits etc. etc..
I’ve been really busy this week, and can’t even decide what my three favorite foods are. But, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I just saw this at a site for aircraft modeling (of all things), “A tribute to the Lebanese from a senior UN official”:
When I arrived in July, with the conflict raging, 1 million people – nearly a quarter of the country’s population – were in flight, living in areas away from the fighting and the air and artillery assault on their communities, to the safety of Beirut, North Lebanon or Syria. Only weeks later, with the cessation of hostilities on August 14, these same people were on the move again, this time in a rush back to their homes, so many of which were unfortunately found damaged or destroyed.
To my mind, the most intriguing thing about this large-scale migration was just how orderly and without incident it was. What other country could experience such a mass movement of its citizens in the heat of war and have virtually no incidence of hunger, malnutrition or deadly disease? In my experience, it’s simply unprecedented.
It often amazes me that people assume that the malevolance and hatred we see on TV or read about in the newspapers is somehow typical of a country. It’s almost always not. Usually, most folks seem to want what we do – safe places for our kids to play, work that satisfies at least some or our needs, friends and family. The stuff we read about is the exception, not the rule.
Have to go now, but I hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving.
angie @ 170
Ahhh a challenge! The possible winger answers are:
1. Three songs you can — and do — listen to again and again.
Anything by Iron Maiden
2. Three movies you can — and do — watch over and over.
Mad Max
Beyond Thunderdome
All the “Lethal Weapon” movies
3. Three dishes you would choose for your last meal.
T-bone
Porterhouse
Pork
4. Three most relaxing vacation spots you’ve ever visited.
Vegas!
5. Three books that you consider great reads.
Sports Illustrated.
Readers’ Digest
Fountainhead (but haven’t read it all just yet)
6. Three shows that you consider the best on television, past and present.
Anything with Ron Silverman in it.
1. Three songs: Varen (Grieg); Bredon Hill (Vaughan Williams); Beau Soir (Debussy); In My Life (Beatles – and just as good as the first three); honorable mention – They Can’t Take That Away From Me (Gershwin/Astaire).
2. Three movies: Lord of the Rings (Part 1); The Big Sleep (would have said Casablanca except everybody else did); Grave of The Fireflies (actually, that’s a cheat because I saw it once, it was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, and I’m not strong enough to watch it again); so the third movie is Dr. Strangelove.
3. Three dishes you would choose for your last meal: Ribs, boiled slaw, Haagen Daazs Vanilla (or B&J Cherry Garcia, but HD got there first).
4. Three most relaxing vacation spots you’ve ever visited: my Grandparents house; old Mauna Kea hotel on the Big Island; at a friend’s cottage ‘up north’ in Ontario.
5. Three books that you consider great reads: Love in the Time of Cholera (Marquez, and thanks to a previous lister for reminding me about Marquez); anything by Cordwainer Smith; any Jeeves story (Wodehouse).
6. Three shows that you consider the best on television, past and present: House; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; Farscape (nobody’s mentioned this because few have seen it, but all you Star Trek/Babylon 5/Galactica etc. fans are barking up the wrong tree. This is the best Sci-Fi series of all times in every parallel universe that has ever existed. Yeah, it’s good. Battlestar Galactica – sheesh, what a crock [no offence].).
Kudos to Primordial Ooze for suggesting Fugu for the last meal – no shit, Sherlock! To NormalLiberal for My Traitor’s Heart (how could I have forgotten?). To all who mentioned Confederacy of Dunces (the author’s tale as strange as his only book).
This ‘contest’ is unfair. After reading everyone else’s lists as a memory aid, I could make a Top 30 in each category, no problem. Truly we have much to be thankful for, and we’ll take care of the rest Real Soon.
Happy Thanksgiving to all Firepups – getting ready to leave for WV & dreading a long rainy ride – hope you all enjoy the bird!
Pegleg– welcome to you and all the new commenters today.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.
I hope we can make sure that all others all over the globe have the wealth and comfort we have in friendship, soon.

4. Relaxing vacation spots: Key West, FL; Outlet Beach Prov Park, ON; Anaheim, CA (OK, it was the circumstances, not so much the place)

No, we’d take turns reading it aloud.
The three political missteps of the year:
a) Pelosi choosing Murtha instead of Hoyer, and undermining her girly “leadership” irrevocably.
b) Kerry saying that only stoopid people go to Iraq, insulting our troops.
c) And, of course, Bill Clinton for all the terrible things that have happened.
That’s all I have to say, and I only said it ‘cos I’m deep in EPU territory.

It’s about an immigrant — Pakistani, I believe, since “Paki bashing” was popular at the time it was written — who gets stomped late at night while waiting for a train. The thugs take his keys and wallet, giving them not only his money but his home address. As he loses consciousness, if not his life, his last thoughts are that when his wife hears the door open “she’ll think it’s me.”
It’s really quite harrowing. But the thing is, it’s a totally kick-ass record!

And I even have a bonus “family-angst” story. The last time I saw my sister, who lives about 8 miles from me, was when hubby and I were down there for my niece’s 8th birthday on Oct. 14. We had a lovely visit, which abruptly took a turn for the worse when, on our way out to the car, I mentioned that I’d turned my car – a VW Jetta station wagon – into a cliche by plastering 3 (liberal, naturally) bumper stickers on the back of it. One of them said “Blind Faith in Bad Leaders is Not Patriotism.” Well, she started quoting ‘facts’ at me like: “The Dow is over 12,000! The deficit is going down.” (To which I probably responded, “So what?” and “No, it’s not.”)
Anyway, the very last words I heard my sister say were, “Rush was Right!” before she did a graceful and emphatic 180-degree pirouette and stomped into her house.
Luckily, we don’t traditionally spend Thanksgiving together, but this does not bode well for Christmas… ;}
Now that that’s done, back to reading the rest of the comments! I *needed* this tonight!
Great topic and I’m making my lists before I read the other ones. I started a cold last and god dammit that’s such college stuff–get sick after the last final–and I’m 56 now. Worked like a dog today and I get 4 days off now with Thanksgiving dinner at the Sheraton Palace in San Francisco, a first: first time in 56 years I’ve gone to a restaurant for Thanksgiving AND I LOVE IT!

Oh man you got me there. I used to cross from Carrollton, pickup my friend who grew up on Florida Ave & go eat there. Especially the oyster dressing and porkchops. I also loved Eddie’s Shrimp Creole. Alas for the late great New Orleans neighborhood restaurants. I hear one of his son’s is reopening a place on Esplanade, Lil Dizzy’s.

I’m glad to hear one of the Bacquets is opening a place and wish them all the best.
Alas for the late great New Orleans neighborhoods. I’m sure the ‘hood where Eddie’s was is a ghosttown now. What’s been lost there is truly incalculable.
Well, this is the first Thanksgiving where my family is not getting together and going separate ways. We really use to have a blast getting together and being stupid trying to crack each other up and telling funny stories and incidents. Talking over each other and showing off.
Not this year. I guess we are burned out on each other.
One sister is going to her husbands and my 2 brothers are going with thier wives to thier families.
The other sister wants to go to a restraunt and so her, my mom and my daughter and son in law are going there. I chose not to because I had visions of the ending of A Christmas Story when the dogs got the turkey and the family went to a chinese restraunt for dinner. Just couldn’t handle that.
So, my son is cooking, which is great cause he’s a great cook and my hubby, me and Eric are having a small quiet holiday at home.
I do plan to spend the weekend as far away from stores as possible cause I just cannot see acting stupid and going this weekend. Besides, I do my xmas shopping on the internet.
I’ll probably finish a couple paintings waiting.
so, happy holiday everyone.
