Mark Liebovitch, writing on the Bullshit Moose's new job as Joe Lieberman's spokesman, is an excellent indication (contra Nick Confessore) that one doesn't have to have one's head inserted in the dark recesses of one's own anatomy to write for the NYT:
Mr. Lieberman, a longtime Democrat of Connecticut who was re-elected as an independent and calls himself an “Independent Democrat,” has not ruled out becoming a Republican.
Mr. Wittmann, meanwhile, is a Trotskyite turned Zionist turned Reaganite turned bipartisan irritant turned pretty much everything in between — including chief lobbyist for the Christian Coalition, the only Jew who has ever held that position.
“Jewish mothers do not raise their Jewish sons to work for the Christian Coalition,” said Mr. Wittmann, offering one of many explanations for why that job was not an ideal fit.
I think the tolerance for Lieberman's phony bipartisan schtick may be coming to an end, and he's not doing himself any favors dancing around from Hannity to Russert and taunting Democrats with his eagerness to sell them all out if they do not kiss his ring. I've felt for a while that the biggest problem faced by the Lamont campaign was not that their message about Joe's essential soullessness was not potent but that the limitations of time did not allow them to overcome the natural reluctance of people who had been voting for Joe for 18 years to come to terms with the fact that he was not the man they thought he was. That key Democrats had no higher commitment than to their own incumbency protection society and would not step forward and abet that process was a tremendous hindrance.
But the message was seeded and as time goes on and Joe plays into it (nodding like a dimwit as McCain calls for more troops in Iraq even after he campaigned that nobody wanted to bring the troops home than he did) I think that it will eventually reach a saturation point. Jim Baker is not going to save anyone's ass and the public will need someone to blame for the escalating bloodshed and nobody has set himself up to be a bigger, more despised patsy than Lieberman. There is a wave cresting over his head and although I think he is much too obtuse and arrogant to realize it, the possibility that it will come crashing down on top of him in the not-too-distant future is very real. Articles like this on the front page of the Times are a pretty good indication that Jodi Wilgoren (or whatever the fuck she is calling herself these days) will not be able to save him.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I think I have to channel punaise here and say that my contempt for Joe Lieberman will never subside.
I dislike intensely anyone who continues to support the Iraq war. And anyone who denies the right of the Palestinians to a homeland. There is for me, no middle ground on these things.
I detest anyone who loses the Democratic primary and then wins the election by hook or by crook.
So is “bi-partisan irritant” a step up or down from being the only Jew to schlepp for Ralph Reed’s legacy?
In two years,
ifwhen the Senate turns more Democratic, by even two votes, my guess is that the party leadership, along with everybody else, will be willing to throw Joe under the bus, where he belongs. With no hold on the majority he will be powerless, and much disliked for what he has done. For myself, I can’t wait. McCain’s luster is already dimming, thank heaven, as he is exposed for the hack he is and his “bipartisanship” looks more and more like the self aggrandizing load of crap it is, and Joe won’t be far behind.
Besides, the mound of manure he serves up as policy on Iraq is out of step with 60% of the country. Don’t you think someone may notice that?
Need a PrepH-wipe for that bi-partisan irritant?
He is in the Senate anyway. He has six years as 1/100th the power of the Senate.
People were stupid to elected him, who needs that kind of drama? Its like damn, God forbid there be 1/100th of the Senate a “liberal”.
Can’t see anyone wanting to take him on as anything unless it was payment to churn his seat. What is the party of the Gov. of Conn?
Jane– Dangerstein was on msnbc today and the graphics under his face was “democratic strategist”– yuck.
Wittman is a prostitute of extraordinary shill.
OT– If you missed Ed Bradley’s memorial service this week, cspan1 is replaying it now. It’s beautiful with Jimmy Buffett, Aaron Neville, Wynton Marsalis, Bill Clinton and many, many more.
It finishes with a gorgeous New Orleans brass band…
I’d feel a lot better if the Dem’s Senate majority wasn’t contingent on Joe. You just know the Republicans are doing everything they can to lure him the rest of the way to the dark side. Granted, he’s already there but he’d still have to suck the scaly cock of Beelzebub or whatever initiation rite is required when one officially joins the GOP.
TRex @ 6
If Joe Lieberman had been twice the candidate Ned Lamont was, Lamont would still have been the better candidate.
catfood @ 13
I hope Wittman’s proverbial Jewish mother doesn’t hear about this. I’m going to take a wild guess that the scaly cock of Beelzebub isn’t kosher.
Where, oh, where to go for Late Nite? Kate O’Beirne on the NRO Election Night cruise where the ship’s engines failed on one side so they were forced to sail in circles? The Bush family’s Karmageddon of the last week? The stills I’ve seen from Fox’s “comedy” show? Atlas Pam and her ten year old photos of slain Christian martyrs?
It is truly a target-rich environment. What to do, what to do?
On Faux News’ H&C Entertainment Platform for NeoCons last nite, RGJoe said his GOPer Senate colleagues “tease him” about changing parties, which means, to me, that they are dangling shiny seniority-based chairmanships, and that RGJoe listens when they do.
He also said Senate Dems hadn’t talked to him about changing parties.
Hannity, sporting wood, really really wants RGJoe to run for Prez, methinks.

I think it is breathtaking.

Ian is awesome.
Since 2000, lieberman has had one ambition - executive power, prez or v-prez - taking on a mccain staffer puts him closer to the ‘bipartisan’ ticket republicans will need to get elected in ‘08. He has bush’s blessing. He and mccain are mutual admiration society, and if he loses he will still be a senator -
TeddySanFran @ 23
Thorpie seemed pretty happy about his retirement, and the Aussies are taking it pretty well as they are totally distracted by The Ashes cricket test match against England which starts today and goes for 5 days.
In other news PM John Howard is still licking Clusterfuck’s boots and offering to increase the contribution of Australia to Iraq from the present 750 soldiers there now. With even Poodle Blair bailing out, why Howard is still attached to W is beyond understanding.
petedownunder @ 26
I figure it’s either forbidden man love or a pact with Satan.
john in california @ 25
Lieberman has about as much appeal as a used toilet tissue. He was a terrific liability on Gore’s ticket. There is no way the Rethugs would consider using him.
Is Howard a descendant of those that were sent “down under” long ago?
If so, that would explain his allegiance to criminals.
jest sayin’.
btw– Lizz Wright is singing like a bird on cspan1 now
Even two weeks later, even as I watch Speaker Pelosi and Majority leader Reid ride into town, the two races that leave a bad taste in my mouth are Ned Lamont and Tammy Duckworth losing to pussbags.
There’s a very revealing thread over at TNR, in response to a Richard Clarke call for withdrawal, that is full of thirty percenters. One guy says we just need more artillery and air support. This to combat an enemy whose weapons of choice are the garotte and the power drill. Arm chair military historians who think they could have won the Battle of the Bulge in a couple of hours with a pivot flank motion (or something like that: I tend to skim when history gets tactical) I suspect.
Morris Sheppard @ 9
I wish I had as much confidence in the Dem Senators as you do Morris. They gave Joe a standing O, they consider Joe their “friend” no matter the screwing he gave them during the election, and the Reid/Schumer/Landrieu/et al sect loves them a good centrist. Thank god for the House which is where the real action will occur imho.

I think you’re right. There will be some slow news days ahead and I can stock up, but Karmageddon is the best topic for tonight, I think.
YaY!
Love the Basil Fawlty pic. I believe that moose is Japanese, isn’t it?
Too many people didn’t heed GW’s strong words, and they got fooled again with Lieberman. But I, too, believe Joe’s gig is up soon.

The dawning of Aquarius. It’s a-comin’, for sure.
It could happen.
A couple of Iraq articles worth a read:
Tom Hayden: http://www.commondreams.org/views06/1122-20.htm
John Brown/Ray McGovern:
http://www.commondreams.org/views06/1122-23.htm
I share the contempt you feel for Joe. As I’ve said before, my sense is that it is only a matter of time before he is a prominent figure in the latest scandle de jour and has to leave the Senate in disgrace. Can’t happen soon enough for me…
So what do Joe Lieberman and Thanksgiving have in common?
Give up?
They’re both about turkeys.
rat bastahd @ 31
Agree. I’m putting my faith in the Progressive Caucus and the Black Caucus. Lamont would have been the necessary breath of fresh air in the Senate, but, so far, the only new ones I have faith in are Webb and Tester. Hope I’m not disappointed.
rat bastahd @ 37
Read them both today and they were mighty informative.
Thank you.
Yeah, but the NY Times reporters will try very hard to save him. Look at Anne Kornblut writing about Hillary’s campaign spending when she was officially on Lieberman’s beat and never wrote one word about Lieberman’s $387,000 petty cash.
And note to Hillary: You dummy actually itemizing the $15,000 you wanted to give Maggie Williams! All you had to do was say “stipend volunteers” and you have given Maggie $387,000.

I don’t mind a beard at all, though I do understand that it slows a swimmer down.
He’s hot, beard or no.
The washboard and the long legs rule.
Glenn Greenwald outs the Atlantic’s Robert Kaplan, and incidentally Fareed Zakaria, for his duplicitous role in the run up to the war in Iraq and his new found neocon revisionism.
http://glenngreenwald.blogspot.com/
People who are so wrong and so intellectually dishonest should never be listened to seriously, or in any other way, about anything ever again.
Fareed has tried to redeem himself for a long while but he was darning socks for bushco when it all began.
JR@28
mccain needs a running mate who is devoutly religious, can still appeal to the pundit class -all sides, dampen the middle and appeal to big money - all that sounds like joe to me ( and peel off the northeastern Jewish vote )
Jane, I always love your take-no-prisoners writing style.
TRex @

Trex! always glad to share. everybody on the contempt-mobile!
There may be some slow news days ahead. But ‘they’ll’ be plotting.
john in california @49
That was exactly the same logic Gore applied and it got him nothing. Lieberman, aside from being a miserable campaigner is not going to sell on a national level.
Personally, I think that Joe will wait for the bribe to grow sufficiently large and the announce that he will caucus with the Rethugs. Most likely just in time to screw up a important piece of legislation.
angie @ 48
Yes, but his most recent epiphany about Iraq in Time was really just a reworking of the neocon dream of permanent bases. It wasn’t a way out. It was a way around.
Jeffrey@44:
That’s a really important question and one that my husband (a DTC member) intends to pursue. Joe has managed to hang on to his day job while pursuing other interests. Then when things didn’t work out Joe slithered back to his safe senate seat. This can’t stand. Joe cannot have it both ways.

It’s a little late in the thread, but if you’re still looking for options, but given the day and the slain JFK, how about a call for nominations to receive the TRex “Profiles in Cowardice” Award?
TRex @ 6
I second that emotion.
I hope you’re right, Jane. I can’t believe his colleagues can’t him for the selfish, opportunist neocon that he is. I would think they would be getting tired of his little games.
If he had been running against someone as cut throat and ruthless as he is, perhaps the scales would have fallen from people’s eyes in time. But Ned is too decent a human being to behave the way Joe did.
I’m still so disgusted by my fellow Connecticut residents. But media distortion is a powerful thing. And so is denial.
MayDaze @ 62
Doesn’t one need a conscience first in order to act on it? The people who should know better will pretend otherwise.
bookwoman @ 56
I’m pretty sure it would be governed by state law. I remember Lyndon Johnson ran for VP and the Senate in the same election, but it seems like there was a case where some candidate wanted to do that but couldn’t.
Richard Clarke, via Kevin Drum:
Is it possible for Lieberman to run for Prime Minister of a Middle Eastern country?
punaise, are we EPU’d? Sometimes my browser doesn’t recognize a new front page and I have to restart my computer. It’s gotten pretty quiet here.
Joe becoming a Republican? Ooooh! Do you know how *angry* some 30-35% Democrats plus a good portion of the independants are going to be? Some CT voters were angry at *us* Lamont supporters for telling them the truth about HoJoe, because the truth hurts; it sounded all negative and dirty to them. Hmmm, what happens if that same anger ends up getting channelled at HoJoe? I can see it in my inner crystal ball: HoJoe’s plummet to the teens. It’s a little like how people in CT were defensive about voting for Rowland, but once the sh*t hit the fan . . .
JR @

I know I’m grateful for it. Our household has been praying every night for these evil people to be tripped up in their own evil, for them to be caught up in the tangle of their own lies.
Seeing it unfold makes my heart swell in gratitude.

the best strategy the democrats would apply right now is to force liarmans hand
my parents used to love to get me something I really wanted…they didn’t realize what they were doing, and I don’t fault them, but when I did something that deserved a punishment of some sort, they usually tried to withold the gift
man oh man, that did NOT fly, even when I was a child…I remember when I was about 5 years old, they witheld a game they had just ogt for me.
as soon as they gave the game back I threw it destroyed it, didn’t even tell them I did it.
when they asked me what happened I told them I didn’t want it anymore.
each and every time they tried that type of punishment I never used the item again.
period
we need to make a statement IMMEDIATELY, something that will force lieberman to stab cheney and bush right in the back.
some kind of oversite bill or censure.
then if he even THINKS about squaking, OUT OF THE PARTY, OFF OF EVERY COMMITEE.
everything…we need to hold his membership in our majority over HIS head, NOT him hold his vote over ours

Hill’ry? That ain’t no leader. Plays safe. She’ll never run. Fine with me. Gore for VP, can’t really trot him out for Pres a second time. Besides, now that he’s Mr. Environment and that is probably the single most important & urgent thing to do. Better he’s VP and can concentrate on it that.
You’re so right about those seeds Jane. The last six years taught us patience. I remember a couple weeks on the couch in a fetal position after the 04 election, believing the majority would never get what had been plain as day for two years. Yet here we are - just took a couple more years. Joe’s gonna be the most despised man in Conn. in two years - you watch. And there’s a deeper bench now of true Dem reps in that state to take his seat in six.
Don’t know about recall. CT statutes
I am going to everything I can possibly do, no matter how small or perhaps insignificant to help Senator Clinton to not get the Democratic nomination for the presidency for 2008.

Joe Lieberman’s campaign spent $387,000 “petty cash” in the last 12 days of his primary against Ned Lamont. This is unusual and most likely illegal but so far no expl. Possibly used to buy votes, but I think more likely start-up $ for his CT4Lieberman party. COmplaint lodged wih FEC, but nothing back yet, SFAIK.

If McCain gets the nomination–something I’m not sure about–I don’t know exactly who his running mate would be, but it’s NOT going to be the Jewish guy from the Northeast who has already proven to bring no value whatsoever to the ticket. His running mate is going to be some sort of sop to the frothing base. A Southerner of some kind. Haley Barbour, perhaps.
