Dowd is, and always has been, a frivolous idiot. That she has any influence on American discourse whatsoever should tell us all we need to know about the REAL fight that dems/libs/progressives will have to be ready for: the fight against these self-congratulatory Assclowns of Conventional Wisdom in the mainstream media. They amuse themselves ALWAYS at our expense.

Not having read the column and being a fan of Dowd’s I won’t totally bash on her.
I am a huge fan of speaker Pelosi. The proud moment I felt since my daughter’s wedding last year was when she came out to the podium on Tuesday Night when we took the house. I think she is just so cool.
But, before I found blogs and in the darkest days of 2004 as Bush was being re-elected I found Bushworld and it sustained me during those depressing darkdays. It gave me hope and laughter and made me feel better. It was the only voice I found that said those sarcastic things I felt about Bush.
So, I will be disappointed in her but, reserve any Dowd bashing until I can read the column or if she continues in this madness.

Amen. That’s all. Amen. As usual, you have put into words the thoughts running screaming through my brain as I read this crap. Brava!

Dowd, like Broder, Cohen, Jokeline, and others of the same ilk, are shit. Why even bother reading them? The times they having anything of value to say are so infrequent that its hardly worth wading through all their septic effluent to get to it.

Great Post Christy. Your best snark yet. When is Fox going to learn that when they make fun of Pelosi and Hillary, they are making fun of more than half the people in this country. I’ll be with my Mom for Thanksgiving and you can bet she will keep Fox off while I’m there.

Dowd is just horribly vacuous.
Yes, she’s a good writer; however, borrowing a phrase from quantum physics history, her columns are so
airy and fact-free, they’re not even wrong—they can’t be right or wrong.

One more thought… as long as The Mean Girl is performing her usual ineffectual passes at character assassination.

Anyone here notice her own history of relationships are all with men whose “brilliance” I find more that semi-dubious (Michael Douglas and Aaron Sorkin) — both of whom have been rather serious and self-destructive addicts and at least one of whom (Sorkin) she still venerates in her writing.

The whole world is full of ludicrous flaws for her onto which she can project her sub-reasoned mockery and distaste.

Except for the self-humiliating and cruel sex addict and the pathetic, self-glorifying drug addict.

I’m so glad Monica Lewinsky took her down to the middle school cafeteria floor in that restaurant.

Know this will be EPU’d, but here goes.

Maureen Dowd grew up in DC, the youngest child in a good Irish Catholic family. Her father was a police officer and she has one or more brothers in law enforcement. She went to college at Catholic U., in DC, as hometown girl. She started work in ‘74 at the Washington Star, which was considered the better of DC’s two big dailies, and stayed until the paper folded in 1981. Then she moved on to Time, and in 1983 joined the Times, working in the Metro bureau. This was the heart of the Abe Rosenthal era, and she was one of his best finds. In ‘86 she moved back to DC to cover national politics. Her articles were sharp and incisive, and she could eviscerate Bush 41 with just a few phrases and a little ink. When Anna Quindlen left the op-ed page of the Times in 1995 for Newsweek, MoDo moved into that slot.

MoDo’s early coverage of Clinton, including her op-ed columns, was pretty adulatory, altho’ she could skewer follies with the best. When the bimbrolio over Lewinsky started, Dowd wrote like Bill had been unfaithful to her–not to Hillary. But she was merciless with Newt and the Republican leaders, too.

She was brutal to Gore in the 2000 race. One DC kid trashing another DC kid.

During Bush 43, she’s been harsh on the administration and the Congress. She scorns pretty much everyone. Heavy-duty snark is her schtick.

My take: part of what she does is to take the conventional wisdom [which is the very limited world view of the media folk who live and work in DC–and for one of the best takes on that, see this piece by Matt Yglesias], and take it to the limits of sarcasm. She seems to be a person who cares very deeply, and uses her sarcasm to needle those who disappoint her idealism.
