Bush prepares for another visit to a weird foreign country where he can't get a good chimichanga.
From the New York Times:
President Bush likes speed golf and speed tourism — this is the man who did the treasures of Red Square in 18 minutes — but here in the lake-studded capital of a nation desperately eager to connect with America, he set a new record.
Mr. Bush emerged from his hotel for only one nonofficial event, a 15-minute visit to the Joint P.O.W./M.I.A. Accounting Command, which searches for the remains of the 1,800 Americans still listed as missing in the Vietnam War.
There were almost no Vietnamese present, just a series of tables displaying photographs of the group’s painstaking work, and helmets, shoes and replicas of bones recovered by the 425 members of the command. He asked a few questions and then sped off in his motorcade.
. . .
On Saturday, Mr. Bush’s national security adviser, Stephen J. Hadley, conceded that the president had not come into direct contact with ordinary Vietnamese, but said that they connected anyway.
“If you’d been part of the president’s motorcade as we’ve shuttled back and forth,” he said, reporters would have seen that “the president has been doing a lot of waving and getting a lot of waving and smiles.”
That's right, people. Our president, who couldn't bring himself to visit Vietnam back in the '60s, can't even visit it when he's actually in country. The lack of intellectual curiosity is almost as baffling as Laura and Condi romping around an Asian country dressed in white, the color of, inter alia, mourning for the "locals". Classssssssy.

These are the new members of the New Democrat Coalition, an offshoot of the DLC. I wonder if these antiprogressive politicians will ever hold Bush accountable.
Also DLC is Karen Carter, who is currently a netroots candidate for DailyKos, Swing State Project and MyDD.

The idea that he went to Vietnam at all is baffling and that it creates the opportunity for story after story comparing Vietnam and Iraq wars.
I mean — shouldnt we have thousands of stories about how the vaunted WH communications and propaganda and messaging operation just flunked Poli Sci 1?
It’s difficult for me know which I dislike more, or respect less. George the ‘enabled’ or Rice the ‘enabler’.
I think that pretty much sums it up… “the president has been doing a lot of waving.”
Good show, old chap. Good show.
“the president has been doing a lot of waving and getting a lot of waving and smiles.”
Hopefully those waving at Bush were waving their middle fingers.
It’s not Sunday! I’m not ready to face the snark!

Truer words…
Louisiana Girl,
I STILL can’t believe that they’re calling themselves the New “Democrat” Coalition. Are they so utterly bereft of creativity that they have to define themselves with a term that the goopers use to denigrate Dems? Jeebus.
A disgrace of epic proportions.
I pray the world will recover and accept our earnest apologies.
Great post and graphic watertiger, thank you!
Why did he even bother going? Just to say he was there I guess.
Can’t someone just confine him to the fake ranch in Texas for the next two years? God what an embarassment.
Marion in Savannah @ 14
Yes, I guess they must use the Republican adjective. But at least we know where their commitments lie. What do you think of Karen Carter, who believes Civil Rights is over?

When I read a story such as this one, it always comes to mind what the beltway whores would have done if Clinton have committed these faux pas. They would have been beside themselves with anger and outrage. It is left to bloggers to report just how stupid and uncaring the President of the United States and members of his immediate staff can truly be. chimpie does some sort of unforgivable mal act on every trip he makes. Has Dean Broder every made the comment that Bush(ver 2.0) has trashed his office? I bet I know the answer.
I posted a caution about Nick Lampson some time back. I know he’s from DeLay’s old district, a Republican redoubt, but still – up until the waning days of the campaign, he was holding himself out as a progressive – sigh
OT slightly, but not too much I hope.
The Third Infantry Division, based just down the road at Fort Stewart, is about to be sent out on their THIRD deployment to Iraq.

1. Was wearing white a sly nod to the Asian convention, an under the breath appraisal and confirmation of the status of their souls, a nod to the vaunted subtlety of the Eastern mind?
2. Or was it just really dumb?
Vote early and often.
WaPo front page this AM had a photo of Bush/Ricicle. Both looked ill-at-ease, imo. Sitting in usual setting. Anyone else see that?
(Now, WaPo front page photo is Cruise as MIB. Sorta. Other one ‘disappeared’ otherwise I’d link it.)

Think someone shoulda spell-checked ‘waved’. Should be ‘waived’…
What’s really sad is that a ‘discussion’ on TV of his trip to Nam pointed out that many of the people lining the streets to wave were not born until after the Vietnam war, and hence have no memory or real sense of history of it. What popped into my mind at that was wondering what the younger generations there are being taught about it. Or is it the same revisionist crap by the powers-that-be that happens here?
Bush is such an asshole and he’ll always be an asshole. If he thought 2006 was rough I’m looking forward to his unfavorable planetary alignments coming up in 2007. Pop some corn.

It’s not baffling to me, it’s what anti-intellectual, entitled jackasses do. It would be baffling in a rational, sensible, well-educated adult.

Oops. Another mistake by the Bush cultural advisor, Larry the Cable Guy.
I am suspect of Karen Carter.
“On education reform, for example, she has been a floor leader for legislation sought by Republican Gov. Mike Foster (an ex-Democrat).”
“I just don’t believe there’s a need to draw such a stark distinction between old and new.” Karen Carter says.
Odd isn’t it, the ReThugs aren’t pushing a meme that the Vietnamese are happy he went AWOL and didn’t end up fighting them. Where’s their usual sick, twisted, logic anyways??? Oh..riiiiight….
BTW watertiger, I’m still chuckling over your comment the other day about being able to use ‘dim son’ full time now. ;)
Oklahoma kiddo @ 36
I am also very suspicious of Karen Carter, especially as she received endorsements by many organizations in Louisiana without even attending their selection interviews. In other words, she is bossed and bought, and she also has ties to many corporations, including Entergy, that regularly rip off locals. So much for progressive politics.
Bush in Viet Nam joke roundup:
President Bush just began a seven-day trip through Asia. So far, everywhere he’s gone in Asia he’s been met by thousands of protesters. President Bush may be the first American to be greeted with the phrase, “We hate you long time.”
President Bush is getting ready for his big trip to Vietnam. Dick Cheney however got a deferment. There was an embarrassing moment. President Bush had to ask John Kerry for directions. That was awkward.
Political experts say President Bush planned a trip to several foreign countries this week because he’s unpopular at home. In response, the White House said, “That’s ridiculous, the President is just as unpopular overseas.”
This week President Bush is flying to Asia to meet with leaders of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Phillippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Or as Bush calls them, China.

Just read this story and came here to find a discussion about it- now that’s service.
The first question that arises is who wrote the story and why. Someone wants the US ta know that it’s president is a clabberass.. Well good!
Second thing that pops into my mind is the line towards the end- Clusterfuck ain’t spending the night in Indonesia- too dangerous- he’s goin to Hawaii.
So the likely explanation for why he didn’t DO Vietnam this time is the same as for why he didn’t do it LAST time (during the war) he’s scared shitless of the place.
I have to say I agree with Shez…the last couple of weeks of mind-numbing idiocy displayed by every single member of the GOP and the administration bodes extraordinarily well for our fortunes over the next two years.
These animals, even with the media tip-toeing around the little messes they leave on the rug, in the context of the overwhelming stink of Iraq boldly rotting in the front room, are going to leave a smell around our country that will not only keep everyone other than the rabid base disgusted, but will thoroughly solidify that disgust.
Meaning: we have the most golden of opportunities.

Ah well, now you’re asking if the Bushies are culturally literate. Can’t you tell whether or not after all these years?
If someone did a recap of this whole God forsaken trip from start to finish- pulling absolutely no punches and starting from the idiot’s failure to get approval from congress in advance for the deal he was traveling to announce, then america would see what they’ve got for a president. It’s all there- lack of leadership, lack of confidence, lack of competence, lack of courage..Pathetic little worm of a man with a big fuckin mouth.
Bush is a chicken sh’t yellow belly, ‘Nam War avoiding, drug-store cowboy, tantrum throwing liar and coward. Always has been. Always will be. F’k ‘em. And he’s a fake. He ain’t even a real Texan.

I think he’s just clueless and has no interest in culture, art, religion, or anything at all beyond his carefully kept me-first schedule. He’s not doing any country unless he’s forced to for the photo op—and then only enough to get the excursion on tape.
It’s another indicator of his emotional issues. The dude is seriously screwed up and bottled up so tight that nothing else can get in.

I was thinking that he might be thinking that was a way to build some war-time creds, a few decades late….

Maybe he’s saving it for a stop-over with the troops in war torn Hawaii.
sounds like Clusterfuck’s gettin along GREAT with the locals- they really love em- ya can tell- they keep hollerin “Bush”, “Bush”, out in the streets- why are they carrying rope?
kirk murphy @ 58
If the troops there are anything like when I was there, they’d be musing, “hey, dude, which one’s which?” :)
I’d say that the guy who wrote this story isn’t too enthralled with Clusterfuck….
Think of these reporters- they travel halfway around the world to write a great story- and they get a president who spends his whole day in the Hotel playin video games. Can’t blame em fer bein pissed.
Was he drunk too?

Every corporation has a dept that handles the mail- good and bad. They expect so many bad letters and so many good letters daily- and as long as things stay within that nominal count- no one’s the wiser- but if the negative mail is all of a sudden ten times normal- everyone jumps and the PR people FINALLY inform management. So plan your strategy accordingly.
I’m a bit confused by LA Girl’s repeated comments … the Karen Carter link is from 2003 and I don’t see anything on the DLC site that’s more recent …pointers anyone to info on the new d’s?

Ask and ye shall receive. Tim Tagaris just posted at MyDD on the run-off between Jefferson and Karen Carter.
Swopa’s got some mighty fine links upstairs.
A Louisianan, I believe I know more about Karen Carter than most in the blogosphere. DLC, centrist, a terrible legislative record in the Louisiana house and a machine politician. visit nola.com, and i believe you can read what local politicians say about her.
The lack of intellectual curiosity is almost as baffling as Laura and Condi romping around an Asian country dressed in white, the color of, inter alia, mourning for the “locals”. Classssssssy.
B*tches! That’s the colour of mourning in China too. Japan probably as well. Considering how much Nancy Reagan red(lucky color in Asia)they usually wear, I’m surprised. Or maybe not.
Louisiana Girl @ 82
LG- this fits right in with my new research project. So, any specific links you can provide would be most appreciated. I offered to compile links for someone who wants to have info about Karen Carter on their radar- hence my earlier requests for links. VG
Or maybe well, the white will enhance their gweilo “foreign ghost” status. Babies cry, mother’s run, here comes Chimpy.

Here is a local blogger’s take on Karen, positive on the whole. skeptical brotha
Sourcewatch page for her.
Local weekly paper points out ties to DCL and has comparison to Lieberman.
Look, people, there’s a new thread. Don’t make me us drag you there.
Bush was an empty suit since he was born.
We knew it when he opened his mouth in the campaign of 2000 and he has not let us down on that assessment.
He is incapable of learning anything since he learned to tie his shoes.
“Carter is a member of the DLC. Carter received endorsements from prominent Republican businessmen Joe Canizaro and Boysie Billinger.”
Carter is a political protg of Jim Singleton, a former city councilman and the leader of the powerful BOLD political organization. With the help of BOLD, Carter was elected in 1999 to the Louisiana state legislature as a representative for the 93rd district, which encompasses New Orleans’s CBD, the upper French Quarter, and parts of Central City and Mid-City.
Per: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Carter
VG – Karen Carter links:
A five-page bio in the NO Times-Picayune says she comes from a political family; they also endorse her.
But this article from the same paper gives a little pause (Republican funding).
Skeptical Brotha - he’s apparently skeptical of Dollar Bill
As we know, the DLC likes her…
Her LA House of Representatives page
A NYC Kossack likes her, cross-posted at Swing State Project
Gets an award as Legislative Rookie of the Year.
Here she is lauded as a “coalition builder, not unlike Joe Lieberman” (?)
WDSU does a candidate profile
From a political family and funds from Republicans – probably a little conservative.
So somebody is building a research file on Karen Carter.
Is there one on William Jefferson?
And who’s the third candidate or alternative to these two? So far I see a lot of bashing of Carter for centrism, a lot of bashing of Jefferson for his alleged criminal behavior…and no alternatives to the two.
What’s the agenda here?
Rayne @ 91
I really don’t think there is an alternative. I just wanted to see for myself whether she was really that bad. She appears to be a business-oriented Dem. She’s still, IMHO, the best choice – better than a Republican or Dollar Bill.
DLC:
The DLC supports both NAFTA and CAFTA.
Recently, the DLC also urged Senate Democrats to vote against Bush’s nomination of Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court “on principle”, but firmly opposed any filibuster of the nominee.
The DLC gave strong support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
During the 2004 Primary campaign the DLC attacked Presidential candidate Howard Dean as an out-of-touch liberal, because of his anti-war stance, and dismissed other war critics…
Will Marshall co-signed a letter to President Bush from the Project for the New American Century endorsing military action against Saddam Hussein.
… critics believe the DLC has essentially become an influential corporate and right-wing implant in the Democratic party. Among the DLC’s leadership are individuals with impressive right-wing credentials, such as Marshall Wittmann, a senior fellow at the DLC and the former legislative director for the Christian Coalition…
Will Marshall, a cosigner of a letter issued by the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) endorsing not only the Iraq War, but also an overall foreign policy similar to neoconservatism.
Finally, detractors of the DLC note that the DLC receives funding from the right-wing Bradley Foundation as well as from oil companies, military contractors, and various Fortune 500 companies.
Former chairs of the DLC:
President Bill Clinton
Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana
Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut
Rep. Dave McCurdy of Oklahoma
Sen. John Breaux of Louisiana
Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia
Sen. Charles Robb of Virginia
Former House Democratic Leader Rep. Richard Gephardt of Missouri.
Rayne @ 91
Rayne- I asked people to post links. I can’t get into the details about the informal research project, but I hope you will understand if I say it’s for an FDL friend who took me up on my offer, and just needs info. I’m sure that Jefferson is being addressed too. If there is any “agenda” it is just one to get information. xxoo VG
Why do we have to choose so much of the time between not good and really un-good?
Like in 2008, we might have a choice between a gung-ho Iraq war supporter and a not quite as gung-ho Iraq war supporter for president. It’s all too frustrating.

Grading papers today, having sworn off FDL and other dens of iniquity until I do what I’m paid for. But in the course of my reading countless essays on Marx, I kept thinking about our Fearless Leader, and how amazing it was that we (I mean YOU, american public) could have elected Him). He’s not even a putz. He should be so lucky to be a putz.
It pales the imagination to think that a nation that has some actual world-class heroes (Washington, Lincon, FDR, MLK) should be represented by a person who if, he were only mediocre, would do honor to his office.
And the stepford wife.
Oh, the suburbs. Hell on wheels.
Bush is Missing In Action in Vietnam while America suffers through this quagmire in Iraq.
And they say there’s no parallel between ‘Nam and Iraq.
Now, if only the Vietnamese would imprison Dubya, making him the a POW. Perhaps they could even charge him with War Crimes related to his ‘leadership’ on Iraq.
BTW, have ya read there’s a new attempt to get Germany to charge Donald Rumsfeld with war crimes. A suit was brought some time back, but it was tossed out since Rummy was still in office. Maybe it will go through this time. At least the issue has been put on the table.
—–
Let’s see: Libby on trial, Abramoff convicted, Ney convicted, Taft admitted guilty, Noe ?, Delay out of office and likely guilty, Limbaugh laughable, Coulter being investigated for voter fraud, Ingraham might be investigated soon, Rumsfeld OUT, etc. How many can be rounded up and convicted before the Bush admin ends? Any guesses? Will Bushie be one of ‘em?
While reading this I was thinking the same thing: Our President is just so incurious about the world or anything not about him it’s embarassing.
It’s even more glaring when I just finished reading on another blog an interview with Al Gore…
it makes me weep
This doesn’t surprise me much. If memory serves, much of Bush’s ‘diplomacy’ in the run-up to the Iraq war involved him making some phone calls or having meetings in Washington, but not actually shuttling from country to country. Granted, he wanted the war no matter what, so any diplomatic efforts largely were kabucki theater. But I still found this a glaring aspect of the pre-war period, even as it related to lining up allies.
