[John will be here to chat with everyone in the comments. As always, with any of our Blue America threads, please stay on topic and be polite. And please give a big FDL welcome to John! -- CHS]
We've gotten to know a lot of progressive challengers this election cycle and, judging by the amounts of money we've donated, John Laesch has been one who has really connected with members of our community. I'm so happy he's decided to join us today for a look at the campaign that's just ended and for a little discussion about where we go from here. Where we go from here may be something that John has to look at a lot more quickly than any of our other candidates.
John's come a long, long way since we first met up with him last June. For one thing, he's come a lot closer to beating Denny Hastert than any other Democrats running for Congress in the 14th CD have. In 2002, Larry Quick took 26% of the vote. In 2004 Ruben Zamora took 31%. John just got 40%...on his first run for any office.
He also accomplished what no one else has; he forced Hastert to come back to the district to campaign and he forced Hastert to spend a great deal of money to keep from an embarrassing loss, money that could easily have been spent to help Republicans who lost in close races, like Rob Simmons, Mike Fitzpatrick or Ann Northup.
John increased Democratic vote counts in every single county in the district and, for the first time, even beat Hastert in one county, Whiteside (with 54% of the vote). In DeKalb County, where we ran our "Time To Throw Hastert Out" radio spots, John took 42% of the votes, a huge increase over past Democratic performances there.
It's hardly a secret and rumors are flying everywhere that Hastert would like to retire, not just from the GOP Leadership -- which he has already announced -- but from Congress entirely. Right now he will only say he's not running again in 2008.
One suburban Chicago paper put it bluntly: "Political watchers noted that leaders seldom stick around for long after moving from a vaunted position to a rank-and-file member...Republican strategist Gary Mack, who previously worked for Jim Edgar, said Hastert might step down early if it meant he could have a bigger role in picking his replacement. 'It's very easy to understand why a federal official third in line for the presidency wouldn't want to stick around and become a minion,' he said."
Republicans tend to get used to the perks and prerogatives of office and when they lose their leadership positions, they tend to bail entirely, Gingrich and DeLay being two very recent examples -- and Hastert having been more used to "perks" than anyone else in memory.
Hastert, known as someone who could consume more sushi at a single sitting than any 3 of his colleagues, also has pretensions to being named ambassador to Japan. Among the local Republicans salivating not over platters of sushi but over the chance to replace Hastert in Congress are state Representatives Tom Cross, Tim Schmitz, Patricia Reid Lindner and state Senator Chris Lauzen, as well as Kane County Board chairman Karen McConnaughay, former state Senator Steve Rauschenberger and former gubernatorial and U.S. Senate candidate Jim Oberweis. (There is also a good chance that Rahm Emanuel will try pushing John out of the way for a less grassroots oriented, less independent-minded, more...malleable candidate like state Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia.)
In the Chicago Sun Times, columnist Lynn Sweet points out that Hastert has two sons, a lawyer and, of course, a lobbyist, and Hastert would love to bequeath the seat to one of them.
Longtime and well-connected local Republican hack Tom Roeser gets to another big consideration: the bottom line.
It's pretty late at night and I'm not going to go into a lot of research but a rumor has been bubbling up that should be recorded… even if it's knocked down later as more information comes due. The rumor, substantiated by a number of people I've talked to who know the Denny Hastert people personally is this: Denny Hastert has determined to resign before his term as Speaker expires -- for one reason only. When you step down as Speaker your pension is calculated on your level of pay and Speaker's pay is a lot more than that of an ordinary member of Congress. Somebody who's a lot fresher than I am at this hour of the night can check Denny's salary but I think it's in the neighborhood of, say, $200,000 plus."
And for Hastert, the bottom line has always been...the bottom line.

Welcome John!
(and zed!0)
Welcome back, John. Great job campaigning — hope we are going to see a lot more from you in the future. You were a fantastic candidate, and just what we need more of in Blue America. :)

quoting the zero.
Welcome John Laesch! I am proudest this election cycle of my support of your campaign!
I know John told me he was going to be in a meeting this morning and that he’d get on FDL as close to 2 (EST) as he could.
Seems that people would be a little pissed to contribute to the campaign of a candidate who resigns before he’s sworn in.
Goopers must be perfect sheeple.
$212,100 to be exact.
http://usgovinfo.about.com/lib.....31200a.htm
Howie at 4 — while we’re waiting for John, folks had some questions on how we’re going to work Blue America going forward. I know we’ve started talking about it a bit between Jane, you, me, Amato and all, but perhaps you could give everyone a preview of where we are at the moment, to kind of give them an idea of what we’re thinking?
It looks like there may be quite a few resignations, for one reason or another (to eat sushi in Hastert’s case; to spend quality time with Federal crime officials in John Doolittle’s and Jerry Lewis’ cases). I was hoping we’d get some rest while the new Democratic majorities started the long and arduous process of cleaning up the mess the Bush Regime has made.
John, your candidacy was so fresh and clean compared to anyone else’s, most especially Hastert’s.
What I want to know from people like you and Scott Kleeb, is whether your wholesome personality has to be politicized as conservative on social issues, or whether Christians who run for office as Democrats need to run away from choice and gay rights?
Have progressives lost out in the battle for clean and wholesome?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 7
Well, I’m open to any and all suggestions of course.
Howie Klein @ 8
Maybe after the criminal investigation of Foley, Hastert will need to find a sushi place that delivers to the pen.
I would like to thank the FDL community for raising more than $20,000 for the 2006 Laesch for Congress campaign. Together we raised more $ than any candidate has against Dennis Hastert since he first ran in 1986.
Together we garnered a higher percentage of the vote (40%) than any candidate has against Hastert. But most importantly, we made Hastert campaign for his own re-election. In the final 3 weeks of the 2006 election, Hastert took the following actions:
1) Hastert ran non-stop commercials on WGN radio (the most expensive radio stations in the area)
2) Hastert sent at least 7 mailings to Democratic, Republican and Independent voters
3) Hastert had Laura Bush do a robo-call
4) Hastert did a robo-call
5) Hastert was cutting ribbons and shoveling dirt (groundbreakings) for the last week of the campaign and was on every front page. Sometimes the local papers even called to get a comment from the Democratic opponent.
The bottom line is that we could not compete with the Big $$$ and our fundraising came on too little – too late.
We learned a lot and are looking at the potential special election.
Respectfully,
John Laesch
Hiya, John! Welcome to Blue America and Firedoglake!
In the current climate- a special election to replace a retiring congresscritter could draw millions in campaign dollars.. I like it- sorta like a 12 month football season.
Howie at 10 — we’re definitely keep the PAC open, though — and I wanted to be sure folks knew that. There will be special elections and such that we might be able to help with over the next coupla years (due to the aforesaid closeness with federal law enforcement officials pending for some prominant GOP lawmakers, and all…).
Welcome back to Firedoglake, John! And thanks for fighting the good fight on behalf of all Americans whether from IL-14 or not!
Bravo John! You sure ran an awesome race and it was a pleasure to support you! Can’t wait for the chance to do it again so a special election sounds very good to me!
John if you are the candidate in a special election- seems that you will get plenty of support.
John … before we get too deep in pols, how’s your brother doing? is he still in Iraq?
rwcole @ 17
John will probably have to deal with Rahm Emanuel’s idea of what to put up against Hastert’s handpicked successor first
Alison @ 9
I don’t shy away from choice and gay rights issues. Those people will vote for Hastert/Lauzen/Whoever and not myself. In 2006, the conversation was on the War in Iraq, the Economy and Healthcare. Immigration is a place where I expect to win lots of Christian votes. Questions about GLBT rights and Women’s rights were rare.
jdl
Howie Klein @ 20
Well … sounds like we’ll have two battles then but we’re good for it!
Howie- yeah- but he’s got the name recognition at this point. Should be a winnable battle.
Siun @ 19
He has been out of Iraq since early Nov. He will be back in the United States on Nov. 21st with wife and kids.
Thanks for asking - jdl
John Laesch, many GOP Congresscritters were defeated in their elections because not only was their Speaker toxic and thus dis-invited to their campaigns, but Denny had to spend his own money right at home to defeat a progressive, grassroots first-time candidate. I hope your IL-14 supporters who gave your campaign its 40% recognize their contribution to the national Blue Wave.
High-fives all around! John Laesch in 2007!
=======
Who’s Next?
=======
Howie Klein @ 20
We have the organization and name recognition to win a special election primary.
Nobody wants a repeat of IL 6th.
jdl
John - please give him our best!
A special election can be great since we can focus on one campaign rather than the full country … great opportunity!
Welcome John
Remembering back to your first letter to dKos and that flicker of doubt… I wondered if I’d be doing you any favor to encourage to take on the Speaker of the House, of if that might be encouraging you into a lions’ den…
I encouraged you, thinking of Dean’s fifty state meme, and hoping you’d be in position, just in case.
Your story, chapter by chapter has been thrilling. It’s wonderful to see what a blend of hard work and a bit of luck came to be.
For the future, all my best, and whatever lions’ den you choose, I’ll be with you!
John, did IL-14 conduct a fair, fraud-free election?
John, have you had any communication with the DCCC? Is there any chance they will support you in a bid to take IL-14 when Hastert resigns? My understanding is that Pelosi appoints a new DCCC chair next week.
Hey John,
Out of all the districts Blue America PAC bought spots in, I think IL-14 was my favorite. The people of Illinois are great! I’ve yet to meet anyone from there I didn’t really like.
TeddySanFran @ 25
We will make this well-known. I have to wait for H4C to file his final report before we know exactly how much $$$ he spent in IL 14th, but I am guessing it is near $1M. That amount could have swayed votes in one or two other target districts.
jdl
Anyone know what the average winner spent in house and in senate races this time around- I mean round numbers?
TeddySanFran @ 29
No. I was in court by 4:30 p.m. on election day with our lawyer. Several precincts did not open until 11 A.M. and others were open only hours later. The judge ruled in favor of the County Clerk to keep ALL Kane County polls open until 8:30 p.m.
Our coalition wanted to keep “problem precincts” open later. We lost.
Either way, it was a huge problem!
jdl
John - can you give us a sense of what resonated the most in the counties where you had the most success? and are they suburban or rural or?
Welcome John, and Go Blue!
Howie Klein @ 30
Not yet, but it will happen in the near term. Durbin is the first hurdle to cross in Illinois.
jdl
John Laesch @ 33
John, what’s your gut on this kind of thing? Is it a matter of incompetence and lameness or do they do it as part of a coordinated effort to manipulate elections?
rwcole @ 33
From Open Secrets:
The average cost of winning a 2006 House race was about $966,000, based on pre-election finance reports, and $7.8 million for a Senate seat.
Jacqrat @ 31
we have met a lot of people from all across and the west coasters have been so helpful; phone banking, donations, marketing/advertising of JDL have been AWESOME. thanks so much
Siun @ 35
Illinois’ 14th is a cross between Suburban/Rural. The fact that I live on a farm and work as a carpenter appeals to lots of sub/rural folks. The fact that I am opposed to the war and have been for my entire political career appeals to the more affluent, suburban areas of the district.
We also won Aurora, the second largest city in Illinois.
jdl
John - count me in on efforts to influence Durbin.
Welcome back to FDL, Jen, and thanks for all your help!
May–Thanks- I thought it was about a million for house races- the senate figure is incredible.
Urban races have to be much MORE expensive.
Siun @ 41
John, Siun (Christine) is our publicity specialist. She really can help with Durbin. We also have on the ground activists in IL who have been in touch with Durbin. What do you suggest we do?
Winning Aurora is great!
and Kudos to Jacqrat who bought our BLue America spots in Il-14! Her media skills really maximized our PAC contributions!
always glad to be here and support John in whatever way i can. ;)
rwcole @ 44
Yeah, that’s why the CT races were so expensive - NYC market area.
By the way, we have a new Act Blue page going up. I don’t think FDL has deployed it yet, but this is the url.
I cannot imagine showing up to vote only to find my polling place not yet open, or already having closed early. My rage at being disenfranchised would only be exceeded by my worry that democracy had ended the night before.
John, I hope your campaign workers and volunteers know how much hope you and they gave many of us. I thought districts like IL-14 were lost forever. I will never forgive myself for buying the red/blue dichotomy. I thank you and our Chairman, Howard Dean, for disproving the red/blue lie.
Democrats: We respect every voter enough to ask for their vote. We might not get it, but everybody in America deserves to be asked to support our view of the future!
njr @ 28
Thank you for the support! It has been an exciting ride and the 50-state strategy has helped local candidates as well.
When you let a county-wide candidate or county board candidate run without an opponent, the opposition can funnel money and efforts into one or two races. We are on the verge of cracking the crucible of power in the IL Republican Party. Most of the power players in IL GOP come from IL 14.
The 14th District saw these Democratic gains:
DeKalb County gained a solid majority on the County Board (13/20 Dem seats). Go DeKalb!
Kane County gained two more GREAT Democratic State Senators in Linda Holmes and Mike Noland.
Kane County won their first county-wide election with Democrat Pat Perez for Sheriff.
Whiteside County won a County Wide race AND put in a good friend of mine, Judge Vicky Wright.
Making gains throughout the district turns this sub/rural district blue!
jdl
John,
Just a big thanks for all the work you did. I’m sure I can’t imagine the long hours.
Howie Klein @ 45
Christine, can you give me a call at the office? 630.385.8568?
We are putting a blog up on Fireside14.com in the near future to document story-by-story the grassroots effort in the is district.
jdl
1,337 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Laesch:
Thank for you work and puttin’ yerself out there this last election. From your post at #41 it sounds like you have discovered a key to coalition politics that the old folks in Miinesota discovered in the 1940’s - 50’s: the urban-rural, farmer-worker alliance. In Minnesota it became the Democratic Farmer Lanbor Party and is to this day.
Go to it, the Democratic Party in Ill needs some reconstruction.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T QUIT, WE GOTCHER BACK!!!
John - thanks for pointing out the impact on state races! We need to think not only 50 States but District and County!
Howie & Company~ I must tell you of a funny here in the 14th. The night before the election, we (JDL, our Tech guy, his wife and myself)were working the train station and we found ourselves facing time with Hasterts people. Our tech guy, moved his car up to the station, backed it in and blasted “Have you Had Enough” on the car stereo as Hasterts people were looking for votes as commuters got off the train. It was Halarious. Much to say they (H4C) did not stay long!
some have even downloaded it to ringtones on their phones :)
Jen @ 40
Thanks for buying the commercials. I did not know they were running until I was in a parade in DeKalb and people kept talking about it or singing it. They loved “Have You Had Enough!”
Check out this montage from Sycamore - http://www.john06.com/node/456
Jen! that’s so cool … we’ll make sure the whole Had Enough team knows how useful it was!
And it will work well for a special too!
Jen @ 56
LOL!! I hope our song getting played on the radio in DeKalb helped elect those County Board members. I was happy that the county voted for John at a hgher rate than the whole district did and that John significantly out-polled previous Hastert challengers in that county.
Siun @ 58
How do I send those people a special thanks?
jdl
I’m proud to have been one of your contributors, John, and I’ll be there again when the next round comes. Thanks for joining us again to update us!
Hi John
What Alison said above about your campaign - the most refreshing anywhere. What is incredible about how well you did, coming out of the blue *g* (well, ONE of the incredible things) is that you didn’t triangulate and run from issues. I can’t remember when, but sometime around the MCA vote I think, I saw that you were out meeting with High School Students and taking about the tough issues, llike Abu Ghraib.
So what is the situation with Laesch 2007 or 8? Will you campaing stay around? Can you start taking contributions now?
I so hope you stay with it (and when your brother comes home, safe and sound, I hope he considers public office too - although I’m not at dkos a lot, I have really enjoyed his contributions that I saw there).
Dems outside Chicago lost a big voice when Paul Simon died. Candidates like you, John, that can raise the profile of IL Democrats outside of the Daley machine can only help. Thanks for running!
Durbin knows that Dems need downstate support to win statewide races, and you showed that even in the district of the republican speaker of the house there are democratic votes to be had. Keep the local party folks working hard, because whether its 2007 or 08, the downstate Dems hold the keys to Illinois statewide politics.
MayDaze @ 52
Thanks - if everyone does their little bit, then we can keep the pressure on and turn America Blue. This was my little bit for 2006.
jdl
John,
I’d like to thank you for helping send Rob Simmons packing from CT-02. That 91-vote margin could easily have been surmounted had Simmons been able to afford any more GOTV. Republicans like Hastert (or Lieberman) feel so entitled to their office that they are indignant when someone challenges them.
It’s tough to lose any time, but just like Ned Lamont’s campaign, we know we helped others ride the Progressive wave into office nationwide.
Thank you.
Connecticut Bob
John - you can send a note via Howie or I’ll get you the email addresses for everyone!
Just watched the Pumpkin video - I love the banners with all the Democratic heroes on them! What a great idea - cutting through the current nonsense to remind people of all parties of Dems like Kennedy! Smart move and one we should use to help break through the Fox rhetoric.
The Blue America PAC expects to be doing a lot more work for John’s next run than we did this time.
Mary @ 62
My brother is further left than I am. His background in law/philosophy will make him a great candidate.
We are accepting contributions for a 2007/8 bid. We met today to discuss strategy and everyone wants to keep going… An open seat will be much easier to win. I think that the hat is officially in the ring.
The “new team” is assembling even as we speak.
Persistence is the key: Durbin ran three times before becoming a Congressman and Mike Noland (mentioned above) ran three times before becoming our State Senator.
We brought lots of new people into politics and it would be a shame to not see this organization advance.
jdl
John -
How do you see the state of the Democratic party in IL outside of Chicago? Your work certainly shows there are votes to be had for Dems willing to make the effort to ask for them!
John … as soon as I get my car fixed (argh, don’t ask) I’ll have to make a trip out of the big city to visit with you all and see how we can help!
Connecticut Bob @ 64
Thanks Bob - do you know if Lemont is going to run a second round?
You guys did a great job in making Lieberman an honest man. I have a feeling that CT bloggers will have a powerful voice in any vote that goes before the U.S. Senate.
jdl
Siun @ 69
Feel free to contact the office - we would be happy to travel to Chicago.
I go back to work next week as a Carpenter.
jdl
Jen @ 56
OH man, THIS makes my Day! Thanks for sharing that, Jen! :D
John Laesch @ 71
I work on cars:) Growing up in Africa and on a farm tends to make one very self sufficient. What kind of car?
jdl
Howie@49..the donor # has been stuck a 7 for days. We are going to need bucks to support John in the special and for all of the special elections need to fill the felony plea bargained open seats.
Peterr @ 68
Winning any election is a simple formula:
Candidate Message Structure Strategy Money = Victory.
We are growing and training an already active Democratic Party within IL 14. Change takes time and energy - that we have.
IL 14th also includes two of the fastest growing counties in the country (Kane and Kendall). The changing Demographics and an enthusiastic campaign will lead to change.
jdl
John Laesch @ 69
John, we all hope he will stay active somehow, but the next shot for Senate here in CT is to go after Dodd in 2010, and Chris Dodd wasn’t the reason that Ned got into politics. It was all Joe.
It’s too soon to guess what he’ll do, but the CT blogging community is remarkably energized and willing to work hard to see that we continue the good work Ned started.
For now, our job is to keep a watchful eye on Lieberman. Hopefully, we’ll get the chance to help Ned again; I doubt there’s a single person among us who wouldn’t drop everything to work for him should he decide to run.
Laughing … proudly drive a 93 Subaru from my days in NH - only car that stands up to New Hampshire winters! It’s with my local guys now but I’m gonna keep you in mind!
And I’ll circulate a note to the Chicago-area blog crew and see if we can arrange a meeting to build a support team here … bet we can!
building a support team in chicago would be great. there are some local bloggers out there already in support of JDL
Steve @ 75
The new page
Siun @ 78
Hey, Siun! I’ll proudly put my ‘91 Buick up against your ‘93 Subaru - not for NH winters but for sheer hang-toughness. I’ve got almost 300k miles on it and drive it like a tank.
What a tickle to find out you drive a ‘93 Subaru!
Howie Klein @
49
Great to know. If you’re still set up for monthly contributions I’m planning on switching mine from Democracy now to Blue America.
Marion in Savannah @ 82
Monthly contributions are exactly what the new Blue America PAC treasurer needs to make her job easier
Any word on who the Republicans are looking at to run for Hastert’s seat (whether in 2008 or, hopefully, much sooner)?
Hey, Jen.
You should get the photo of John at the top of the post and use it in some campaign literature. What a cutie! Sure to garner some of that extra female vote!
Jen - I’ve just put a message out to the Chicago crew … and I’ll be in touch about setting up a meeting. We have some very good folks in the area who may be superb support.
Most likely early December given some of the travel schedules I’ve heard … I’ll keep you posted and feel free to contact me at media dot firedoglake at gmail dot com
John, Jen, Howie -
I made the comment in italics below on an earlier thread. Just wanted to get your take on it.
I keep wondering how we can simply make the DSCC and DCCC irrelevant. How can we convince future candidates that we have more influence and can ge them elected?
Money.
I mean real money. I know the ‘roots raised something like $15m this cycle (and before I get jumped on, that was a great effort), but that’s not much compared to what the DSCC and DCCC raised.
We need to start earlier and raise a lot more. Then we need to let primary candidate know that if they want our money, they need to sign up with our agenda. First point of that agenda needs to be public financing of elections.
There’s also organizing and volunteering, but as long as TV is seen as a necessity for winning, money will trump it in the eyes of the candidates.
I was disappointed you lost John. But I am so pleased and proud to have supported you; and I’m doubly so to hear you’re going to go right back at it. You’ll be able to count me ‘in’ again. Be Well and Good Luck every step of the way. My best to your brother and all your family, too!
PS to Howie:
Quick question Howie. If I add an ActBlue tip to my monthly BlueAmerica donation, will that be monthly as well? Or should I just adjust the tip now to make up for it? Thanks Howie. You’re a peach. And a hero.
rufo_firenza @ 88
I think it will be monthly too as long as you specify the Blue America PAC
MayDaze @ 87
MayDaze, one step at a time. We’re the newest kids on the block. We have a long hard road ahead before candidates, not to mention congressmen will take us seriously for an reason other than our ideas and values. Blue America raised $545,000 this time and we are aiming for $2 million for congressional races for $2008. We’re in it for the long haul.
MayDaze @ 87
Agreed. I support public financing of campaigns. I also talked about it in all of my GOTV pieces and commercials. You can see the commercial here - http://www.john06.com/node/430
On the campaign trail I talked about the 5,000 people who contributed to JDL 2006 vs. the millions that Hastert took from special interest groups. “We can’t change a republican party for a Democratic Party - we have to change the system.”
John
Howie,
Thanks for the response. I received a lot of criticism for that comment from people who said we should be pushing to get money out of politics - which is actually my eventual goal as well.
John - the number of small contributions shows the real support for you … we’ll keep building on that!
John,
I appreciate your response, too. The goal is public financing, but we have to get there (in power) from here before we can do it.
Hey Howie and FDL Folks,
I have to take off here for the moment, but will be back later this evening to read more comments. This is the list of potential challengers that I would take seriously. Hastert does not like Lauzen and a battle between Hastert pick (Schmitz) and Lauzen would be IDEAL in a special election scenario.
We also know that at least three other candidates have contacted the IL State Board of Elections and we are staying tuned for the exact rules that will apply.
Before departing, it occurred to me that I could leave some things that need to be done. I know Hastert like a book b/c I have read his book. I do not know much about some of the potential GOP opponents and we could use some research help. My guess is that Lauzen will win. Lauzen by the way wrote a bill that would ban women from breast feeding in public… further right than Hastert, but opposed to Hastert’s highway (the real issue for the GOP).
Here are some things that we need from the Blog Community:
1) Opposition research on Chris Lauzen
2) Opposition research on Patricia Lindner
3) Opposition research on Tim Schmitz
4) Opposition research on Steve Rauchenberger
Research needs to be:
- Where do they get their $$
- What votes make them vulnerable?
Secondly, it seems that there is an incredible amount of media talent within the FDL community. What are the chances that some folks would like to work on our creative team?
John - thanks for running an inspirational campaign.
My various modest Blue America contribs. got spread around to other candidates in 2006, but I’ll be on board for your next run!
John, while we were chatting here, the Chicago contingent was also setting up a meeting to talk about how we could help your race. I want to fly into Chicago for that too. It’s been so long. Thanks for stopping by and talking with us. I hope you and Jen will keep us up to date on developments as they unfold.
