DONITA!!
FINI FINI!!
FITZ!!
Sorry for the delay folks better late than never! My TOOBZ! were tied and the truck didnt pull up to take the podcast to the server until a few minutes before showtime.
Ooooh!
Rayne, quick as usual! How you doing?
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
I LOVE JANE WIEDLIN!!!!!!
She was my favorite Go-Go! She wrote all their best songs and was soooooo much cooler and more interesting than Republican-to-be Belinda Carlisle. I can’t wait to hear what she has to say.
Please give her my best.
OT POLL
If Clusterfuck and Ticky Dick were bein publicly stoned- how much would you pay for a rock??
hi donita!
great playlist, as usual!
i was at your show last weekend–you rocked!
can’t wait till the next one!
love,
nora
TRex @ 5
What he said! I’m excited.
Hey, one of my cats is named Baby!
Jane Wiedlin is extremely hot, says this 35 year old.
Hey Fini! Thanks for asking. Much better this week, now that I’ve got both the pressure from the election and some contract work off my back.
How about you, other than the unfortunate tied toobz thing…? Heh.
Jon H @
9
Thats a big 10-4 from your classmate of ‘89. I can’t wait to put that show together!
That Cheem song is superneat
Hey Donita
Did you happen to see the cover of the LA Weekly? How dare they steal L7’s 1994 awesome album title: HUNGRY FOR STINK!
LAME!
I’m cranking it at full volume this morning, in your honor. TALKBOX RULES!
AL
I dig the show, but there’s too much reverb on your v.o., Donita…sounds like a Phil Collins record.
;>)
Rayne @ 10
I moved the weekend before the Revolution of 2006 so I am good but living out of boxes again while I find places for my stuff in the new crib. I got a good deal on this place though so I’m pretty happy about it.
darkblack @ 14
That would be my fart. I sometimes get too happy with the ‘verb. I’m gonna yank it back and use a different dryer reverb next week. Too late to unshit this week’s bed. Thanks for the honest input though!
Hey, it’s cool. Fini…Between Donita’s cold and the ‘verb, it’s kind of a Diamanda Galas vibe.
;>)
darkblack @ 17
{spits soda} 707!! HAHAHAHAHA! Wow, you just got the Dennis Miller Obscure Reference Award for that one! Hilarious though, sadly, a correct observation.
darkblack @
17
Didn’t John Paul Jones produce Diamanda Galas?
(well it makes it more interesting to us old guys)
Balrog @ 19
They did a record together that kicks ass…The Sporting Life.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 18
Run away, chachi!
;>)
darkblack @
20
I recall he was working with them when Page/Plant were playing out. I sure wish they would have included Jonesy…
darkblack @ 14
Hnnn, I’ve never ascociated reverb with Phil Collins. I like reverb.
TRex @ 5
I love Jane too. She’s a hoot. I’ll pass on the positive vibes to her TRex.
Balrog @ 22
He said they never asked him. He was busy producing the Butthole Surfers, Heart, and others at the time, also.
Donita Sparks @ 23
It’s the same type that John Lennon used to use on his vocal tracks for solo recordings…Plate style, with a limiter on the top end.
HEY MAN
DON’T TARNISH DONITA’S GOOD NAME BY EVEN MENTIONING PHIL COLLINS IN THE SAME SENTENCE!
AND YEAH–I’VE NEVER ASSOCIATED REVERB W/THAT HACK.
WHAT THA!?!?
Caps key stuck, chum?
The reverb I used I think was a bit outsized of a room. Too cavernous maybe. Next time I’ll use a warm, medium room sound with less sizzle.
Sweet Jane…..Mary Jane……Jane says……I love Jane Wiedlin. Can’t wait!!
Sid
Reverb is like cilantro. Too much of it makes everything taste like soap. Or something.
Forgive me, I’m on cold medicine, so my metaphors may be less than razor-sharp.
NO, “CHUM”
THE CAPS ARE TO INDICATE MY INTENSE INDIGNATION WITH YOUR INSULTING PHIL COLLINS COMMENT.
CHUMSHIT.
Sid Brown @ 29
Jane Hamsher too!
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 28
I’m hearing ‘hall’, with a bit of slapback? For sure, your suggestion works good for voiceover.
Far be it from me to sully Donita’s fine afternoon repast with an appropriate response to your alliterative nonsense…But don’t you have a bicycle seat to sniff?
Al @ 31
Keep it up, buddy, and we’re putting you outside.
darkblack @ 33
And you would be correct. Cavernous space is the name of the preset in Sound Forge Audio Studio I used. Its a hall verb with a touch of slappy in it.
I’ve long struggled with effects on straight voiceovers. Screaming vocals for rock n roll I can nail every time. VO’s not so much for some reason. Gonna have to retrain the ears more I guess.
TRex @ 30
Oh god, I’m on cold medicine too.
Getting a little hot in here. Play nice everyone.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 36
IMO, with music, it’s ‘above’ the voice, and tight…With V.O.’s just ‘below’, and wide. Dramatic to subtle. Are you using ‘phones, or monitors?
Why is it when you have a cold you always sound worse when you start to feel a little bit better. It’s like your body says, “Okay, I’m done with the snot. You can have it now.”
Blurgh.
darkblack @ 38
Thats a good way to put it I hadn’t thought about it like that. I’m using some Yamaha monitors that are nice and flat. I’d give my left arm for the old EAWs I used to have ten years ago lost to medical bill induced poverty and a classified ad.
Hey Fini and Donita,
I have to say the layout is looking really good. Clean and easy. Nice work, and as always Donita, you ROCK! (caps intended) ;-)
Just spoke with Jane Wiedlen who’s at the airport and told her that everyone is excited. She has a very high pitched speaking voice. Any suggestions?
So glad to see Madonna’s I Love New York on your list Donita. She kicked ass from one side of the stage to the other this summer when she did it in Philly.
Jane, definitely the cutest of the Go Gos.
nicelyput @ 41
Thank you very much for saying so. And may I say you ROCK!!! as well?
TRex @ 39
I’m just thankful that it’s snot the flu, then I’d really be loopy.
I’m not sure if Belinda is a Repulsican. I’m not sure if Jane would talk about that anyway. Any questions for Jane Wiedlin next week?
darkblack @ 25
Too bad. They were teh hot.
Wanton Song – Page/Plant
Millineryman @ 43
That is a very cool song. I’ve never seen her live, but I think that her stage show is going to be on TV next week. NBC maybe?
Donita Sparks @ 42
Helium. Then we can have a show only dogs can hear.
Donita Sparks @ 42
She’s sort of in the Jennifer Tilly range…Middle distance on the mic, and watch the background noise.
Okay, for the folks not familiar with the winning obscure reference above: Diamanda Galas.
My favorite musician interview question I always ask is if you could take only 3 CDs to the deserted island you’ll be staying on for a year what are they?
Who is she possibly pulling for in 08?
Is she still active in her animal rights work?
What’s her favorite song she’s ever written?
Where are my keys?
HEY!
think progress says rove is HISTORY
Other elements are also at play: The election yesterday of Sen. Trent Lott to the number two GOP leadership position in the Senate is also a threat to the White House and Rove, who worked against him when he battled to save his majority leader’s job after his insensitive remarks about Sen. Strom Thurmond.
And insiders report that Bush counsel Harriet Miers isn’t a fan, believing that Rove didn’t do enough to help her failed Supreme Court nomination among conservatives. In fact, one top West Wing advisor said that the unexpected ouster of Rove aide Susan Ralston over ethics questions was orchestrated by Miers as a signal to Rove to leave. The advisor said that Rove is aware of the situation and that a departure might come in “weeks, not months.” A Rove ally, however, noted that he has a record of out-witting his critics.
Oh! Donita, how do you know when there’s a drummer at your door?
He knocks louder and faster and louder and faster.
How do you know when there’s a singer at your door?
He doesn’t know where to come in and can’t find the key.
My Q
Is she a top or a bottom? :)
Any questions for Jane Wiedlin next week?
What was her most memorable show and why?
perris — mmmmwah!! I could hug you for that news, too, even if it is purely speculative unvetted rumor!!!
Do I smell barbeque?
TRex @ 53
Where are your keys???? Oh behave baby.
Good questions T. We will be discussing some of her animal rights work.
CNN reporting now John Boehner has been elected Minority Leader.
kristinejoy @ 56
Oh BEHAVE baby!!! But there’s no harm in asking.
For Balrog and Rayne (forgive the atrocious audio)
Diamanda and JPJ
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 52
Good one.
Oh yeah, my Spin this week has been the newly released Best of Depeche Mode Volume 1 with the newly remastered hits spruced up for the digital age. Sounds fantastic on the 5.1 system in the living room!
Didn’t Diamanda Galas and Henry Rollins have, like, one catastrophic date back in the 80’s?
I think he was intimidated because her dick was bigger than his.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 64
I never want to hear that band again. My ex killed them for me forever. He would listen to the same Depeche Mode record OVER and OVER and OVER. “Songs of Faith and Devotion”, ick, a lesser work, to be sure.
I tried so hard to interest him in their earlier stuff like “Some Great Reward” and “Black Celebration”, but he always went back to that one record. Oh, and the live version which is EXACTLY THE SAME as the studio version, but with generic crowd noise.
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaah….
Rayne @ 58
/me takes all hugs
SRV – In Step
Clapton – Money And Cigarettes
Audioslave – Cochise
:-)
Heh. Trex said dick. I don’t know about their dating habits but she is a better singer for sure. Dont get me wrong Henry is awesome as a personality and spoken word guy but I just never got into the Rollins Band for some reason. I do love his IFC show, however.
And Black Celebration is DM’s finest work but the Johnny Come Lately DM fans (1989 to the present) don’t know about it and don’t care. Their loss though.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 69
Rollins jumped the shark when he left Black Flag.
Donita Sparks @ 48
This was the first time I saw her. She played guitar on this song, which was unexpected. She really jammed. And you could see she was having a great time doing it. Overall it was a great show. She had a montage of images against Bush Inc too. It ran for about 2 minutes.
Her concert in on NBC on Wednesday, 11.22 at 8 pm.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 69
I like that show too.
Rayne @ 58
you know what?
if rove is gone they will try to make him a scapegoat wherever they can
I think this means fitz gets more lattitude
TRex @ 70
What does “jumped the shark” mean? Sounds a little saucey.
The Spin I’m In was a night of live music last night. Much needed!
Had a late one last night! Saw a wonderful female celloist, Zoe Keating, (who used a loop machine and had a beautiful head of dreads) followed by the California Guitar Trio (they are from Japan, Belgium and Utah so go figure) who played everything from Beethoven’s “Pastoral” to “Freebird.” Then we made it a double bill and headed over to Yami Bolo for some classic reggae. Nice to have a Friday off after that!
I did love Black Flag for what they were which was a great, loud in your face SoCal punk band that blazed trails that have been worn ALL THE WAY FUCKIN DOWN to the point that Oreo commercials use animated punk cookies to sell products. My youth culture was raped by corporate America and I have issues pardon me.
Millineryman @ 71
thanks for the info.
OK, apparently there have been shootings and robberies and violence all over America today over the release of a video game console. One man in CT was shot waiting for a PS3, two people were shot here in Indy waiting in line at a Best Buy and a riot erupted at a store in CA. Stick a fork in America folks, we’re done.
Wasn’t Jane W the kinky one?
The only thing better than getting to hear Donita’s Flaaaaat midwestern “A” is getting to hear it as if she is standing in her cavernous living room, paint roller in hand and discussing the spin she’s in…
(Hugs to Fini)
I dig the reverrrrrbbbb, maaaaan.
TRex @ 65
‘The limo picks them up at Oki Dogs, driving them out to a secret cockfight in the deepest SFV, followed by a visit to the Hollywood Tropicana mudwrestling palace for some highbrow entertainment. Then, as the evening shadows lengthen…A catered dinner and a brown-bag nightcap seated graciously on the hood of a rented Impala while shooting rats under a starry canopy…’
;>)
Heya Donita, Fini, & Firepups.
So cool that Jane Wiedlin is gonna be here. I’ve been listening to some old favorites from the 80s, will have to add Jane’s solo cd to my “to find” list hehe. The one with Rush Hour on it. I thought it was so cool how when she did the music video for it, it was just her playing around with some dolphins, instead of the expected literal cars stuck in rush hour thing.
In my 80s theme I’ve been listening to Art of Noise, Soft Cell, and of course Stevie Nicks with her beautiful voice and crazed shawl twirling hehe.
heh he…he he..bwe heh…ha ha..hah..baw ha ha!!! BWA HAW HAW HAW!!!
DefJef @ 79
That was Pete Best.
Still laughing at Darkblack’s 12:01 pm.
Donita Sparks @ 77
You’re welcome. I love this post, it’s nice to give something back to you.
perris 73 — oooh, what could it mean if the firewall is gone?? Rover won’t have his office to protect him, won’t have access to information (or shouldn’t), could be used as a speedbump…
darkblack 62 — intense, huh? Thanks!
Scary is awful… is this really considered music?
Donita Sparks @ 74
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_the_shark
darkblack 81 — what, no graphic to accompany that? Heh.
Fini 78 — there is some redeeming quality to the violence. My kids both said this morning after hearing about the first shoot, “Heck, we don’t need one of those PS3’s!!!”
Rayne @ 87
Pete Thomas from the Attractions on the skins, too…Great drummer.
I loooooooove Art of Noise. For Kurt.
Rayne @ 90
Who, me?
;>)
“Jumping the shark”, Donita, is a term used to describe when something that was once good and relevant crosses the line into pointless self-parody. It all goes back to the Fonz, believe it or not.
Emailed a link from this post to one of my peeps who writes for an entertainment mag in the Northwest. Hope he stops by, would be fun if he could put Friday Spin on his calendar and eventually in an article.
Turdblossom career deathwatch has begun.
-GSD
Rayne @ 95
Way cool Rayne, thanks for doing that! If he has any questions have him email us at fdlspin(at)gmail.com. Or anyone else for that matter if you want to send us email.
Most of this music will be forgotten and have no impact on the future… It’s annoying… hahaha.. I guess I am too old…
Fini — great!! I’ll let him know!
TRex @ 94
…And there’s pictures, too
;>)
Jacqrat @ 80
That is excellent imagery and you’re not far off the mark.
I totally don’t hear my accent at all. I even intentionally changed the way I pronounced the word “egg” when I moved to LA. I used to say “aagg’. I’m totally confused by the Flaaat midwestern “A”. I’ve tried I’ve tried!!!!
idea:
Slip some ‘cid in W’s branch water.
Diamanda Gallas on his iPod.
Push ‘play’.
WARNNG – may cause ‘Out of Iraq memo’…
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 92
Thanks Fini, that was awesome! I’d never seen the video for that one.
I remember some idiot music reviewer back in the 80s pronounced Art of Noise and Kraftwerk doomed bands, since “noisy music would never catch on”, or something like that…I’m guessing with predictive powers that astute, he has since become a Washington pundit hehe.
Blank Kludge @ 102
Evil Genius Award for this week goes to Blank Kludge for this post. Although, I would add to his iPod certain selections from Nina Hagen to go with Diamanda Galas.
Kurt @ 103
Oh I know! When I was listening to those bands, Yello, Depeche Mode, New Order and other synth happy bands of the 80s all of my redneck Hoosier classmates treated me like I was listening to alien broadcasts and thought I was out of my mind. I’ve since made a decent living as a club DJ in the 90s and 00s thumping their heads with the descendants of those bands.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 104
DMT and Throbbing Gristle…’The terrorists win’.
;>)
TRex @ 94
Ooohhhh. I love that expression.
Donita Sparks @ 101
I’ve tried I’ve tried!!!!
Please stop, immediately. It is ADOREable. Honest.
Will she marry me?
(Okay, enough with the scary stalker vibe. *whack*)
NOOOOOOO!!!!
Don’t advertise the Teddybears/Iggy song! It’s actually new music that I enjoy and it’s a kickass song. I don’t think I’ll be able to bear it once the mainstream airwaves play it non-stop and make it all but unlikable.
That said, how do I get Iggy to do vocals for me?
And I had to blow the dust off my Save Ferris and not so much dust off this Yo La Tengo.
