If you dropped by the FDL Book Salon on Sunday, you were fortunate enough to catch a surprise visit from author Rajiv Chandrasekaran, taking questions (including some challenging ones) on his new book Imperial Life in the Emerald City -- not to mention Ambassador Joe Wilson, who shared his thoughts on our dwindling options in Iraq.
I'll be your host for Week 2, when Rajiv will return to discuss the book and his experiences reporting in occupied Iraq for the Washington Post. In her post on Sunday, Jane highlighted Chandrasekan's description of some of the key blunders made by would-be colonial ruler Jerry Bremer (pictured above with his phalanx of mercenaries private security guards), as well as tragicomic bumblers like Bernard Kerik and Ahmad Chalabi, during the first year of the occupation.
In reading the book myself, I'm struck by its depictions of how we inadvertently(?) duplicated Iraq's experience with Saddam even as we promised to re-create the country in our image. For example, here's Imperial Life's take on the Green Zone:
It was Saddam who first decided to turn Baghdad's prime riverfront real estate into a gated city within a city, with posh villas, bungalows, government buildings, shops, and even a hospital. He didn't want his aides and bodyguards, who were given homes near his palace, to mingle with the masses. And he didn't want outsiders peering in. . . . Those who loitered near the entrances sometimes landed in jail. Iraqis drove as fast as they could on roads near the compound lest they be accused of gawking.
It was the ideal place for the Americans to pitch their tents. Saddam had surrounded the area with a tall brick wall. There were only three points of entry. All the military had to do was park tanks at the gates.
And then came Bremer, a narcissist and megalomaniac Saddam would have identified with:
Bremer didn't view the palace as an American embassy that had a responsibility to report developments on the ground to the State Department and the NSC. . . . [Colin] Powell's aides quietly encouraged State personnel working for the CPA to write back-channel memos to the State Department. To avoid detection, the authors used personal Hotmail and Yahoo e-mail accounts to send their dispatches. At the NSC, one of [Condoleezza] Rice's senior deputies began checking the CPA's Web site every day to see what new orders Bremer had issues. It was faster than waiting to receive reports through official channels.
. . . Before he even arrived in Iraq, Bremer sidelined Zal Khalilzad, the White House's envoy working on the political transition. . . . Bremer didn't want someone in Baghdad who had pre-existing relationships with Iraqi leaders. Bremer regarded Khalilzad as a potential threat -- someone who knew more about the players and the country than he did, and could disagree with the viceroy's agenda.
Bremer insisted on approving every substantive CPA policy. Staffers sent him thousands of one- to two-page documents. . . . One staffer remarked to me that history was repeating itself: Saddam signed off on even the most insignificant decisions because nobody else wanted to, lest they mistakenly contradict the dictator's whims. "Nothing's changed," the staffer said. "We can't do anything without Bremer's okay."
Chandrasekaran also relates all sorts of smaller, human anecdotes, such as the "sexual tension" on Thursday disco nights at the largest hotel in the Green Zone (where "there were usually ten men to every woman"), and the enterprising Iraqi who built an authentic, wood-fired Italian pizzeria fifty yards from the Green Zone only to be let down when Americans in the "Emerald City" wouldn't even venture that far outside the walls.
So I heartily recommend picking up the book, and please join us on Sunday to talk about it. See you then!

Iranian president says he will be able to produce nuclear fuels by March. Says he’s willing ta meet with Clusterfuck if he’ll quit bein such an ASSHOLE. (Well he didn’t put it that way- but that’s what he meant).
Swopa swoops in, takes a swipe at the swindling swine that was Bremer.
I hope you get into Bremer’s narcissism and megalomania on Sunday, Swopa. He really thought he was the King of All Iraq and just made one stupid, outrageous, ill-informed and destructive decision right after another.
Nobody cocked this war up by themselves, but Bremer’s right up there atop the Most Destructive list.
OT, via MyDD:
Bremer was great- bring in a few thousand college young republicans- sell everything in Iraq that wasn’t bolted down- have an election- and we’re OUT OF THERE!
A big zen deal…
Way the fuck off target, but we will know shortly whether the Sox can land Daisuke
Matsuzaka… (Peter The Gammons thinks yes) but
then the hard part, negotiating with Boras.
Oh, those ticket prices… hold on to your wallet.

Add in a whole host of policy prescriptions from the rightwing think tanks, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
And my, can that Bremer cook . . .
Jane Hamsher @ 5
And that’s not even getting into the boots. The ones he wore even when he was in Washington, D.C.
I read this outstanding book two weeks ago. It should be required reading for all Senators and House members, and their relevant committee staffs. Perhaps Rajiv Chandrasekaran himself can be a non-partisan lead-off witness in one of the next Congress’s Iraq investigations. There is so much that he can tell having risked his life on the ground to paint this picture of the lost year June 2003-4 in Iraq. Only by such committee hearings can the appalling CPA record be completely grasped by the American public, as it must be some day.
Bremer–total pig–and ignorant as they come. Perfect pick for Clusterfuck to run Iraq.

BremenBremer town musicians, a grim(m) fableAlright, Darkblack. Now that you’ve got the songs bouncing around in my head — probably for the rest of the eve — who was it? “Third rate romance, low rent rendezvous.”
) Baker informed Junior bush First of all - “EVERYBODY HATES YOU.” This amazed & humbled Junior bush. Baker was NOT alone with Junior bush was confronted with the above issues. Baker - “The people HATE YOU.” Junior bush turned white, the blood leaving his face, turning White - visible drawing up as in FETAL with his hands clasped in his lap.
2)Baker - ” you KNOW your not a leader - Your a Cheerleader.” Those in the room gave a silent - YA you got that right - it’s about time he was told the TRUTH!!!
3) Baker asked for and received a list of his advisors- and MARKED THROUGH those advisors to IGNORE - ALL ADVISORS WERE ELIMINATED AS ADVISORS TO JUNIOR bush.
4)One concession was Rumsfeld - Baker wanted him fired immediately - that waited till after election.
5) Ignore Cheney - Cheney got up at a meeting and flailing arms while espousing what should be done (about Iraq) Junior bush told Cheney VERY FIRLMY to “sit down and be quiet.” After 30 minutes of sitting quietly Cheney left. Nobody has EVER talked to Cheney in this way - ((and lived???)) - HAH!!!
6) 6) Baker informed Junior bush that you WILL negotiate with North Korea!
7) Baker informed Junior bush that you WILL negotiate with Iran. Baker went to Iran - And leader of Iran did NOT want to see Junior bush last monthy when in the USA - but WENT TO HOUSTON TO SEE JAMES BAKER III. Baker sees Iran overseeing Iraq after USA pullout of Iraq

One thing I did not know (or certainly don’t remember finding out) is how Bremer served as a f**cking assistant to Kissinger!
(Have no idea if the Wonkette thing has a bit of truth in it- but it’s funny as hell.
I love the picture of Baker sitting Clusterfuck down and sayin- “Everyone HATES you- the PEOPLE HATE YOU”.
Can’t stop laughin just thinkin about it.
Kissinger needed assistance fucking? Figures.
Thanks, DB. OT because “I’ve only done this a time or two.”
Now that y’all mention it, where is Cheney? He went hunting before the election, and hasn’t come back, as far as I can tell.
Melanie Sloan was on Al Franken today. She didn’t have a whole lot nice to say about Murtha and lobbyist influence/earmarks (much to Franken’s consternation).
I’m a big fan of Murtha’s stance on the war (though realizing he took a different path than I did to come to this place), and his pugnacious mit regular Joe persona I think is important to counter the media’s stereotype of the Dems as effete nancys. However, I do hope Murtha neutralizes his personal ethics as an issue.
Wordsmith @ 22
An anecdote from the book: Colin Powell asked Kissinger to describe Bremer, and Kissinger said, “He’s a control freak.”
Since Kissinger was a notorious micromanager himself, Powell wondered with horror how extreme Bremer must be to have Henry K. say that.
punaise@6..I am a bit perplexed by the Hoyer vs Murtha thing. I just assumed it was the traditional political infighting but after the CREW hit pieces on Murtha and reading Gilliard’s take; I am beginning to wonder if there isn’t a push-back the by war enabling Democrats. If the one-two team is Pelosi and Murtha, Democrats won’t be able to weasel out of taking a stand. It’s not hard for me to imagine that Joe, Chuck and Hillary would prefer that Murtha not be House Majority leader.
I nearly fainted when the three stooges were awarded the Medal of Freedom in Dec. 2004–
Tenet

Bremer
gah.
at least 2 of the above are named in the War Crimes suit just filed in Germany.
Just got a medal of freedom in a fuckin boxa Crackerjack- seems that Clusterfuck outsourced the damn things.
I’ve ordered this book from the library. not giving any Wapo reporters — lying scum Bushy cheerleaders — any of my $$$$ (except for Froomkin who hasn’t written a book to my knowledge).
heckuva job, Bremy!

America won this war. Bremer was first in line to lose the peace.

Michael Brown Times 100 would have made a good alternate title, or CLUELESS
Steve @ 29
that’s reason enough right there. Murtha’s tainted, but his war stance speaks volumes.
Steve @ 29
I don’t know that CREW is part of any pushback scheme. They had Murtha in their press release touting their list of Most Corrupt Representatives and Senators back in September, as part of a broader “let’s clean up government” push on their part. Murtha appears not as one of the twenty most corrupt (the larger part of their press release) but as one of five “members to watch” about whom they had questions. Another of the five is Dennis Hastert.
(I’m not picking sides here in the race for leader, but trying to clarify CREW’s role as I see it.)
rwcole @ 31
LOL!
Here’s the other defendants, just fyi:
- Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
- Former CIA Director George Tenet
- Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence Dr. Stephen Cambone
- Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez
- Major General Walter Wojdakowski
- Major General Geoffrey Miller
- Colonel Thomas Pappas
- Former Chief White House Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales
- Former Assistant Attorney General Jay Bybee
- Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Yoo
- General Counsel of the Department of Defense William James Haynes, II
- Vice President Chief Counsel David S. Addington
and a bit more good news:

ps– I was wrong, only Tenet is named in this suit.

Kissinger - “Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.”
Depending on his proclivities, he probably didn’t need much help back in those days.
Nowdays he’s merely riding on his former reputation. Pity those who’ve continued to believe he’s worth consulting with.
Shakespeare was born 400 years too soon or he would have captured Bush’s incompetent reign in all its stupidity.

Murphy may be pro-military, but he’s far from “war-enabling”. Those that have experienced combat are the ones that usually try everything else to prevent it (war) beforehand.
Sally- He did- called him Richard lll.
I am happy for Melanie Sloan and her CREW to get out from under CNN/FOX/MSNBC’s “liberal watchdog” label by holding Murtha accountable. CREW will be more credible; Melanie will make some enemies (and new friends!); and any Dems harboring illusions that the New Boss can be anything like the Old (GOP) Boss in the People’s House — well, they will be sorely disappointed.

If nothing else, I would certainly like to know who, when, and why.
This kind of K-Street/lobbyist corruption must be eliminated regardless of party, IMO.
If Abramoff is singing Dem names, we may have captured power from the GOP just in time. I’m wondering, also, if RGJoe’s definition of bi-partisanship might include feeding at that trough as well….
,
I wonder why this might be true? Hope it’s not a bunch of semi-veiled K street promises.
if it takes several truly guilty/corrupt Dem senators to get Rove, I’d call that a win/win
gawdfreakingdammitall…
These people are the real traitors to this country. They tried to set up a taxpayer-funded fiefdom of their own, whether fully or only partially conscious of this choice I care not.
In the mean time, I’ve spent yet another afternoon trying to talk my stepson down to a level of rational calm after he panicked today. The VA sent him a letter saying they were cutting off his funding AGAIN for the second time in 10 weeks, and that he OWED THEM $4000 for tuition paid. Somebody at the VA f*cked up his paper work, input him in the system as having left school when in actuality he left another school 12 weeks ago and started at a new school in September. His PTSD flared up the first time the VA f*cked up his paper work after he left the first school…and now another flare up. He’s worried he can’t make his rent in a couple of weeks.
A very typical experience for Iraq vets all around.
In the mean time, Bremer has a nice cushy desk job with comfortable compensation, in spite of being one of the world’s biggest anal-retentive f*ckups. Bastard.
Tweety talkin to Duncan Fuckin Hunter== world class piss ant.
Duncan Fuckin Hunter just brain farted right on teevee— peeeew!
On a much brighter note:
What’s the chances that Joe-mentum had truck with Abramoff?

If I remember right, he was present at the post-election meeting with the Democrats, but reportedly didn’t say much of anything. Whether that’s because he’d been smacked down or because he was in shock, I wouldn’t care to guess.

Oh.just.puke…
This is a something of a non sequiteur, and has probably been mentioned here before, but since I just ran across it I thought I’d throw it out there.
2006 is the Chinese year of the Fire Dog.
How about them apples.
Cheney gets the smack-down from Baker.
Someone posted a link yestery to a yahoo slideshow of Cheney shaking hands with Reid, if you follow through the images in every one Cheney and Bush are separated, different colored suits, visible distance between them in each shot.
The optics seem to suggest that Cheney is being put out to pasture for being a bad influence on Junior.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 51
Hoyer’s a champion fundraiser. He donated a lot more to lots of campaigns than Murtha. Also, if the NPR report a day or two ago is to be believed, he gave more hands-on campaign advice.
I heard Nir Rosen, New America Foundation, on Air America discussing the myriad changes in Iraqi life caused by the US occupation and subsequent blunders.
I found his analysis and it’s depth breathtaking.
Taylor has an interesting take on Murtha having the military’s ear, which I posted earlier.
Rumsfeld violated the Goldwater/Nichols Act, and effectively gutted the role of joint chiefs of staff.
Sophist, Cheney and Junior are bad influences on each other and on everyone else in their orbit.
Cheney was present at the big auto mtg today.

I don’t know if Rove is still a price. Seems we overestimated his abilities in the past. I believe he is nothing but a Republican hack.
Remek 60 — Jodi Rell appoints the wrong person and CT Dems start a recall to make her life f*cking hell.
I figure she’d pick Schlessinger; might be worth courting the man if we can sell him on cost-cutting measures in exchange for caucusing. Or encourage him to go Indy after Rell appoints him.
If Joe is tainted, the old-school Dems will be eating a big serving of slow-roasted crow with STFU stuffing.
Oh please. Let me carve the bird and serve. Oh no, better yet, let Lamont and team serve up the festive bird.
Stephen Parrish, CPA @ 41
I’ll believe it when I see it. Abramoff wasn’t a lobbyist, he was a GOP operative who used lobbying as a means of extortion and money-laundering. If he had any real dirt on Democrats, I can’t imagine him witholding it until after the election.
Heres the link to the Cheney slideshow.
http://news.yahoo.com/photo/06.....1iraqplane
I have to amend my enthusiastic appraisal on the optics, its not every slide, but there are a number of slides where Cheney’s appearance is significant either as looking old and sulky, as well as a number of shots where people are making cozy with Bush, and a Cheney is visibly distanced from Bush and or the group.
Yeah, Abramoff ain’t got nuttin’ on ‘em Dems or we’d have heared it before the elections. On Rove, you betchum.
Stephen Parrish — want to bet Abramoff tries to serve up Dems whose natural constituencies already include American Indian tribes?
I think he’s scratching at the bottom of the barrel for the last reason that might keep him at a desk at the DoJ instead of in a cell day-in-day-out.
Titanyum @ 73
Yes, but he’s strongly identified with the White House, which has so far ducked being tarred with the Abramoff scandal in the public eye. (The resignation of Susan Ralston didn’t make a big splash.)

I stand by what I said. No beating around the bush, there.
rwcole @ 20
If that is what happened it is scary. I would like to have said pretty much what James Baker said. Does that make me kind of like a Texas Republican? Iran won without lifting a finger, give it to them (at least the Shia parts), see what you can get for leaving quietly — like no nukes if we throw in normalization and a trade deal. Otherwise we are there in the middle of the chaos for a century or there is not an Iraqi left alive, whichever comes first. This all makes Vietnam look good.
Ralston resignation and 485 Abramoff visits were buried under Foley’s mess.
If not for Foley, imagine the headlines….
“Abramoff Visits WH 485 Times” “Rove Chief Assistant Resigns, Ties To Abramoff Reason?”
Well it’s nice to see folks rehashing ‘Proconsul in the Barbican Bremer’ but really, so what?
We’ve known all this for years. So do most Americans, in their bones, let’s get to work fixing this mess and the first step is REJECTING the Gates nomination.
As fer the Wonkette fantasy…mine is a little more succinct.
Baker takes Junior into the Oval Office and puts a quart of Maker’s Mark and a .45 Colt on desk. Fixing Junior with his basilisk stare James Baker III tells him:
“Yer folks expect you to ‘Do the honorable thing…for once.’”
and then leaves closing the door behind him.
