A little sunshine, anyone? (via the NYTimes)
There have been many examples of the shambles that the Republican-controlled Congress made of its responsibility for oversight of the Bush administration. But none was so peremptory as the mass firing of 60 House appropriations investigators last month — virtually the entire hired staff responsible for tracking spending abuses in such money pits as the Iraq war, intelligence operations and the $62 billion Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The dismissed investigators — former F.B.I. and C.I.A. agents and other professionals — did not have their contracts renewed because their work has “not been that good,” in the words of a Republican spokesman who offered no compelling evidence. An attempt was made to sell the purge as a bipartisan decision, but it turned out to be the unilateral order of the committee’s Republican chairman, Jerry Lewis of California....
There had been a bipartisan tradition on the committee, with majority and minority leaders proposing and signing off on investigation assignments. But that degraded with the arrival of one-party rule as Republicans shirked their oversight duty. This was obvious three years ago when the ranking Democrat, David Obey of Wisconsin, was rebuffed in his proposal for an investigation of the freewheeling intelligence operation quietly constructed by the administration in the Pentagon.
Mr. Obey takes the committee gavel in January, and among his tasks will be restocking the investigation staff and setting the committee back on a productive, bipartisan course. This should not be a matter of party vengeance, as some Republicans fear. Rather, it’s a necessity of the course set by the voters to end one-party rule and find out what the government is actually up to.
I don't know about you guys, but I am looking forward to a whole lot of sunshine being applied to all that muck that's been swept under the rug the last five plus years. America deserves to know the truth about how its government is operating...not some trumped up snowjob.
Here's to some accountability.

I am personally of the opinion that even if impeachment is “off the table” based on what we currently know (I disagree - there is enough to go forward now, but I am not the Madam Speaker [damn, I love the sound of that!]and will defer to her judgement)we will discover thru investigation and oversight stuff we don’t currently know (Rumsfeldian conjugation?)that will demand impeachment.
Strung out right to 08, IMO.
Go Madam Speaker!
At least Rep. Lewis was incompetent enough in his shamelessness to wait until a month before the election to fire them. I hope most of those guys had the good sense (and the savings) to sit back for a month and wait to be rehired, rather than sending out resumes.
Related to this was an interesting GAO report in September that included this concludion on the $88 billion in Katrina/Rita relief funding …
I hope the new Congress takes a good look at how that funding is being spent
Vengeance to Republicans is oversight to Democrats.

Yeah Christy, I don’t mind J.D. having all the votes counted either but since I’ve been voting against that guy for 12 years to no avail I’m really enjoying this! He is such a smuck. The AZ Republic endorsed Harry Mitchell and that’s probably what made the difference. They called J.D. a “bully”! I couldn’t believe it b/c they’ve always pretty much backed J.D. up. He is sooooo pissed! Its awesome.

This article portends some VERY good things indeed. Interesting line at the end, though: “Rather, it’s a necessity of the course set by the voters to end one-party rule and find out what the government is actually up to.” Set by the voters, agreed, yes. But also, um… correct me if I’m wrong… set by the Constitution and the way our government is supposed to work as well, non?
Maybe I wasn’t very clear @11.

Ah, Sunshine…Christy summons and here I am, doin’ the happy, happy dance.
Just for the sake of history’s correct record, sure would be nice if someone would do a video on Youtube: “While Dub-U were [sic] busy…” and juxtapose the best of Bushie. Reading My Pet Goat while the Twin Towers went down, air guitar during Katrina, brush-cutting while Iraq collapsed…
pretty long list once you start thinkin’ about it. And in the spirit of a picture being worth a thousand words, I figure a short film would be worth a thousand history books….
Christy…I love that song. Thanks
From Madame Speaker on down - and that includes you, Mr. Obey, Democrats should get used to saying “With apologies to President Truman: it’s not partisan vengeance. I just tell them the truth and they think it’s partisan vengeance.”
Because absolutely every peep out of Democrats is going to be met with cries of “partisan vengenace”. And should anyone get tired of the Truman line, say this instead: “First of all, so what if it is? We have a mandate. Second, as long as we are investigating and discovering wrongdoing and uncovering the truth, we’re just doing our duty to America. And that, unlike the behavior of Republicans during the Clinton era, is a non-partisan job.”

JT @ 12:23 pm (#31)
I don’t like the “suck it, losers” attitude as a message, but I think pointing out that the basic idea of having more than one political party is that, when one party fails to do its job properly, the other party or parties point that out is a good way to go. They’re supposed to investigate each other, as long as it’s not a witchhunt (like the McCarthy hearings) or just a show with no substance (i.e., the Clinton impeachment).

Finally, we need to make sure this never ever happens again, starting now!
Dave Obeys campaign in 1969 was the first campaign I ever worked on. Nixon had won, and appointed Melvin Laird as his Secretary of Defense, Obey ran for his empty seat in the Northern most part of the state. It was an amazing campaign, I’ve never seen a grass roots campaign like it since. Actually had house wives all over the district hand typing letters to voters (with no self-correcting typewiters either). Obey signed each letter himself, adding personal notes when ever possible. I spent a couple of weekends in 20- weather walking the hills of Wausau in a Mini-skirt. (Oh to be that young and foolish again) Any way, I’ve been following news about him ever since, and he’s always done me proud, glad to see he’ll be kicking some butt again.

ed at 44 — Howie addressed the questions surrounding both candidates for majority leader on Down With Tyranny yesterday evening. And as I said in a prior comments thread, Howie did an interview with Hoyer yesterday and we have a conference call with Murtha to be able to ask questions tomorrow. Thus far, I’m not enamored with either candidate — given their histories and voting records, neither is a perfect fit for me. At the moment, I’m agnostic…but I’m certainly open to looking at both their records and talking with both of them and others to see what is best for the Democratic party going forward. Do you have specifics that you’d like to discuss about Murtha — or are you just not supporting him for reasons you’d prefer to keep private?
Christy,
As I said in a comment a couple of threads back, it’s a big problem if there is no functioning investigations system in place.
When these 60 people were let go, what was the status of their investigation? Did they have enough warning to wind down properly (inventory the documents, do closing/status memos, hand off for investigation and or prosecution matters that were ripe enough to go to law enforcemnt) or did they just sudenly get the ax?
In which case, what happened to the case files? When you are NOT trying to lose evidnece it is nonetheless very easy for your files to get lost in the federal system. When I was a prosecutor GSA was doing asbestos abatement in the federal building where I had my main evidence room. Other people’s evidence rooms had been summarily moved w/o thier input and differnt files got smooshed together and some parts of files got seperated from the rest, it was a mess.
My evidence room was on it’s own floor and other lawyers were always trying to get the combination to my room b/c they thought their files would be safer there.
Stuff goes missing, just out of bureucratic complexity. If someone wanted to kill off an investigation that looked like it would bear fruit, the best way to do that w/o leaving fingerprints would be to get rid of the investigators on short notice so no inventory would be done and then move all the files haphazadly into storage.
A new investigaotrs team coming in, would never realize what was missing and would have a hard time getting up to speed on what was there and would therefor, not do their best work.
In investigations, institutional memeory and continuity are very important
kemo @ 38
Especially because he can’t figure out why they’re always drawn upside down.

Don’t worry, rw; Cheney and Hadley were there to make sure Bush answered the questions correctly. I can imagine what the transcripts look like, with Cheney constantly interrupting to cover the gaffes. Interesting that the Secretary of State, who would be instrumental in carrying out any ISG recommendations, was not invited to the meeting with the Pres, but the Vice President, who’s only Constitutional duty is to preside over the Senate if Lieberman behaves in an honest manner, sat right next to Dubya, and the Chief of Staff, who runs the WH, but is not the President, sat on the other side.
The world is watching as our government babysits and controls the President of the United States.
Here’s the picture:

egregious,
congrts on the blogbirthday. Sure you don’t know some lawyers in your state who want to start a democratic lawyer’s council? ;-)
lhp at 50 — I’m hoping that perhaps the Dem staff on the committees have some apprisal documents on status for some of the investigations. But you are correct that this was a horrible compromise of any pending investigation. Although I would bet that some of the folks involved might be willing to come back to work in similar positions if they are able — from my vantage point, if someone tried to screw my legitimate investigation into wrongdoing over, I’d be back at my desk with bells on the moment that I could. *g*
“Walking on Sunshine” always reminds me of the Michael J. Fox movie, “The Secret of My Success”. It was the secondary theme song and played in nearly its entirety when everything was going right for him in the movie. He’s walking around the halls floating on a cloud.
I hope he’s feeling that way now knowing how much he helped re-focus the Nation on things that are important like Stem Cell research. He seems to have had the added bonus of being able to turn Rush Limbaugh into the punchline Leftist Blogistan has always viewed him as.

Whew, who’da thunk it?
The decider makes another winning decision:
CNN is reporting that Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) has been picked by President George W. Bush to head the Republican National Committee.
Martinez, a Cuban-born Senator elected in 2004, is staunchly conservative on most social issues.
The Senator has been the target of an FEC investigation into the under-reporting of campaign debt by half a million dollars, and another FEC complaint regarding improper solicitation of corporate donations.
His chief legal counsel resigned early last year after it became known that he was responsible for the Terri Schiavo talking points circulated among Republicans.

The Rush hiring/firing was quite a scandal within ESPN and Hayworth’s surrogates anti-Semite comments during the campaign really stunk here, can you imagine what ESPN would say about them?
I did a diary over on kos about some unknowledgable people assuming that just because ESPN is owned by Disney that there is a political motive within that organization. That original diary was debunked by so many who actually worked in the Sports TeeVee industry.

I don’t have any theories about MNF’s political motives. However, hiring Limbaugh (and Dennis Miller) tells me a lot about who they think watches MNF. I don’t think they were necessarily politically motivated decisions but probably had more to do with simply business. Given those 2 decisions I don’t see how they would look at Hayworth any different than Limbaugh or Miller. Kinda like how GM uses Hannity = they think that he is a good spokeperson to draw in their natural target market. They might be onto something/c I don’t watch football and I drive Honda.

Institutional memory is important in most government organizations. Doing just about anything for the federal government is a complex business. It’s just worse that this fact is apparently being used to protect miscreant elected officials. In regard to your question, the articles I remember reading about it implied that this firing took place very quickly, within a few days or less. I suspect that much inventorying and note-taking was left undone as a result.
A quick web search confirms my memory (for once):

Lieberman may just be floating the threat of switching parties as a bluff to Reid to keep his Chairmanship. If that’s the case, Reid could call that bluff and threaten an investigation into the “petty cash” that disappeared during Lieberman’s campaign.
Joe thinks he can go 12 with Harry? Was Joe ever a boxer? Now that he’s majority leader, Reid’s got a whole lot more sting in that left jab.
Pelosi may have had to choose between the lesser of two evils–Hoyer or Murtha. It doesn’t look like a good start but she is no dummy and we don’t know what she has factored into her decision.

If you read my diary, you will see that from someone who has worked in TeeVee industry for 25 plus years and ESPN since it was formed. MNF is owned by the NFL, not the networks. The networks compete to broadcast NFL games. The NFL sole purpose is to do football. BTW, my friend works in management and is at the ESPN corporate offices in Bristol CT frequently.
As an observer what I see is that people in the sports industry live and breath sports, which might make them naive to politics. Since Rush had high ratings, they thought he would be a good choice. I really think that ESPN has learned their lesson and will NOT repeat it.
Cujo- Five years ago- Rove warned goopers that they would have just lost the 2000 election badly if the demographics had been the same as they would be in 2008.
