As long as Jim Baker and his Iraq Panel pals are going to try and get President Bush to see reality on Iraq, perhaps they could also clue him in on the fact that no one outside of his deluded inner circle (and crazy vlogging groupies) wants John Bolton at the UN.
"There's a lot of competent people. Send someone new up, Mr. President," Biden said on "This Week." "He doesn't even have the votes in the committee. He doesn't even have the votes of a Republican-controlled committee today. We're going to have a hearing on him. There is going to be a vote on him. He's going to lose."...Bolten played down speculation the administration might go around the Senate and find another way for Bolton to continue to represent the United States at the United Nations, perhaps by finding an alternative means of paying his salary or appointing him to serve as an acting or deputy U.N. representative.
"I don't know about that," Bolten said. "Our effort is going to be to try to get him confirmed in the ordinary course."
Mr. President, sometimes you need to face up to the fact that you can't always get what you want. This is one of those times -- it's best for the nation, best for your party, and best for the rest of the world if you grow up, get down off your stubborn and petulant high horse, and recognize that no matter how loyal you may be to your man, Bolton, the Senate and the other diplomats at the UN just aren't that into him.
But don't take my word for it:
One signal that the new Congress should immediately send to the president and the outside world is the replacement of America's United Nations ambassador John Bolton. Mr Bolton is a unabashed relic of the failed neoconservative era in foreign policy which was so emphatically defeated last week. He has never concealed his contempt for the UN. His presence as the US's chief representative at the most important of international organisations sends a message which is not, and never was, in America's interests. Even timid Downing Street would like to see the back of Mr Bolton so that diplomacy can make a fresh start. Mr Bolton's nomination has never received the congressional confirmation that it ultimately requires; President Bush resubmitted it last week. Senator Biden and his colleagues should ensure that Mr Bolton is rejected, so that the administration is forced to nominate a candidate whose approach is more in tune with the changed times in Washington. The urgent mood for sensible change that brought the Democrats to power - and which has seen Mr Bush's ratings slump further this weekend - is already influencing the administration on its most important challenge. The disaster of Iraq was underlined again yesterday by typically depressing news of carnage, affecting Britons, Americans and Iraqis. Even before his election defeat Mr Bush faced a growing political imperative to extricate the US with a minimum of casualties and a maximum of salvageable dignity within a defined time-frame. The election has heightened that pressure. It means the Iraq Study Group, headed by the former secretary of state James Baker, which meets in Washington this week, acquires greater significance by the day. Those wishing to see a more realistic and less doctrinaire policy need to exert maximum pressure on the ISG to adopt brave new solutions. That includes Tony Blair, whose proposals to Mr Baker tomorrow should be made public. Like the president, the prime minister has to face the hard fact that the central focus of his foreign policy has failed and that we are in a new era now.
Hello -- our allies do not want Bolton at the UN. Just say no.
It takes both sides bending in order for there to be a bi-partisan agreement. Bi-partisanship does not mean that you, George Bush, get to continue issuing orders and that the Democratic members of Congress continually acquiesce. Especially when there is serious debate as to whether the course of action you are trying to shove down their throat is particularly wise or not. And there is a LOT of debate about the wisdom, or lack thereof, of the Bolton nomination.
Certainly, Bolton has had some success at the UN, most recently in blocking Venezuela from obtaining a seat on the Security Council, by finding some common ground in moving away from the US-backed Guatamala toward the neutral ground of Panama. That was good diplomacy, and although it looked for a while like it wouldn't happen, Bolton being willing to bend a bit and get behind Panama once it was clear that Guatamala wasn't going anywhere was a good move.
But effectiveness on a few endeavors at the UN does not erase what Bolton stands for in the eyes of many in the diplomatic community: neocon policies, steadfast support of the Cheney agenda, and a clear disdain for admission of any errors and an unwillingness to listen, really listen, to competing viewpoints. Whether or not Bolton remains in that "my way or the highway" bubble in which the Bush Administration has resided for far too long, that is the albatross that Bolton carries into every meeting, every negotiation, every action that the US attempts to push forward.
And that is detrimental to any objective we are trying to achieve.
It is an unfortunate truth, but there it is. Bolton's tenure at the UN has been tainted from the start by his long history of neocon allegiance and public statements on the irrelevence of the United Nations. Not exactly the best starting point for any diplomat stationed to a post there, is it? When you add in his temperament issues, and the way that his nomination was rammed down the nation's throat regardless of the anti-Bolton sentiment in the Senate -- the body that is designed to give advice and consent and which clearly said "no" to the President on bi-partisan footing on this nomination...well, let's just say the President's petulant recess appointment smacked more of an ego-driven tantrum than of consideration for the best thing for the nation as a whole.
It is time for someone fresh at the United Nations. If the recent elections said anything, it was this: that the American public is sick of the way that the Bush Administration and the Republicans in Congress are doing business. And John Bolton is the poster child for the way the Bush Administration has been doing business.
Do the right thing for a change, Mr. President: nominate a real diplomat to the UN post. Be a bigger man than people think you can be, for once, and surprise us -- and yourself -- for a change. Try being a grown-up and stop thumbing your nose at the importance of diplomacy in some misguided smack back at your father's career, and try understanding, just this once, how important it is to the safety of our nation that we have a good relationship with other nations and an ability to negotiate and work together in a multi-lateral approach instead of just ordering them around. We'll be on much stronger footing for it, and people around the world might just stop hating all of us so much if we start acting like adults again.
Think of it this way, all of America deserves to have the best person for the job. You don't have to just make Dick Cheney happy any more. Toss off those neocon shackles and hire a real diplomat with a lot less baggage. But Bolton? Just say no. Stop humiliating the man and let him withdraw his name, and find someone that everyone can agree is an excellent choice. Think Pat Moynihan -- someone like him would be not only appropriate, but welcome, and a move of strength on your part.
Real men can admit mistakes and learn from them. Try being one for a change.
UPDATE: Please take a few minutes this morning and phone the members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and let them know that you think John Bolton is the wrong man for the job: call toll free at 1-888-355-3588 via the Capitol switchboard. lhp! Would love to hear how your election protection projects went. Long time no see.
conventional wisdom sez Bolton was sent up again to flip the bird to Dems, but I think Junior is flipping off Daddy in particular…
g’ morning, Redd!
looseheadprop @ 2
It must have been your 2 extra exclamation points — takes longer to type ;)
lhp — left you something downstairs to bat around. Kind of interrelated to this post.
Why does Dubya, who is clearly no longer in power, left out in the sun to bake by Cheney, dangling from strings now operated by 41’s team, fail to see the sense in yanking Bolton’s nomination?
Bet you dollars to donuts that Bolton has something on Dubya.
Maybe something in those NSA transcripts Bolton requested on an unprecedented basis.
Why would Voinovich freak out like he did and fail to go with the party line about Bolton way back during the first Senate hearings on Bolton’s nomination, if Voinovich didn’t know something very bad about Bolton, and in turn about Dubya?
Something really smells about this; it’s more than Dubya’s usual spoiled child act.
To paraphrase Josh Marshall’s comment about Bob Ney from a few months ago, “It’s so cute. Bush is the only person who still thinks Bolton is going to be UN Ambassador.”
“Do the right thing for a change, Mr. President: nominate a real diplomat to the UN post”

And finally he’s going to get the appropriate response to such an action; he’s going to get spanked!
Morning Redd- Personally- I hope that Clusterfuck keeps pushin Bolton’s dead corpse on the american people. Great way to show what a dunderhead he really is.
What does Bolton know about the Niger forgeries?
Hey Clusterfuck- If you want to pick this bridge to die on- I’ll hold yer coat.
Real men can admit mistakes and learn from them. Try being one for a change. Christy, I thought that we all agreed that W has no idea how to be a real man. He can’t even portray himself as a real woman anymore…….
egregious @ 6
It went very well. Aside from some ongoing unpleasantness in Westchester (which was anticipated) New York State had one of the smoothest election days in living memeory.
More importantly we got to field test ideas, websites and management systems to see if what seemed like such a good idea on paper, actually works on the ground.
I am happy to report that our statewide website was as robust as we hoped and did not crash on ED. So, it could probably be exported directly to a new state that wants to start it’s own chapter. Hint, hint hint egregious–don’t you want a Democratic Lawyers Council in your state?
We are still reviewing the reporting systems, and I have concerns that some of the spreadsheets are too techinilogically advanced for near computer illiterate lawyers (like me).
But maybe that can be solved with training on the systems.
All in all, it went as well or better than we hoped. For the first time we had trained lawyers in every county in the state and in some places hundreds of lawyers in a single county. We had wonderful support form the state and county committees and are now making progress wooing the town committee chairs.
It’s getting there. Not only will NYS be a fully fleshed out model, we will have field tested systems, traing and forms to export to other states.
Hint, hint, hint.
Pundit keep tryin to make up sensible reasons for insisting on Bolton (gesture to the base- yada yada) they ignore the more obvious explanation- Clusterfuck’s dumber than dirt.

ReddHedd,
Like who? What person of ability and stature would want to board this sinking ship? Plus, it would have to be someone Shrub felt comfy with. who do we know like that, who isn’t already Secy of State? Who could he promote?
Oh Jeez, Fran Fragos. (slaps self on forehead)
You know, Bush 41 was UN ambassador from 1971-1973. Suppose this is yet another Father-Son issue?
Does Condi have a sister? How bout KKKaren for the UN?
Gang — I’ve updated above with the names of the members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the switchboard phone number. My understanding is that things are fairly solid that Bolton will not get out of committee — but I’m not willing to take any chances. If you have time this morning, and can make some calls, I’d appreciate it. Just refresh your browser. Thanks!
Send Cheney to the UN- He ain’t doin much- and he has the preferred Clusterfuck temperment.
JPL at 16 — that doesn’t mean that I don’t get to tweak him on it…

I doubt it will be on Court TV. At least not the in court action. As far as I know the only time cameras were allowed in a federal court was for the Bush/ Gore recount arguments and that was by special dispensation because it was so important to history.
The Supreme Court has recently started allowing audio of their arguemnts. You can check with office of the District Executive for the the District of Coulmbia Federal Court to find out what if any electronic media will be allowed.
I can tell you that when my federal BAr Group uses the Federal Courthouse in NY for CLE programs in the evening, we have the Devil’s own time trying to get permission for still cameras in courthouse for papers like The Law Journal or magazines like American Lawyer.
Our district executive takes the “no cameras in the courthouse” thing VERY SERIOUSLY
Bolton’s nomination is a test…for bush! The Democrats have already said the nomination is dead on arrival so who cares? bush’s neocon base cares thats who, bush is pushing this nomination because he wants to send a sign that he is still about stay the course and that he is not going to change policy on Iraq. Now then why is bush still pandering to these losers who sold him Magic Beans about winning in Iraq I don’t know. But maybe somebody can explain to bush what the election math of two more years of Bolten and stay the course will do to the Republican party’s presidential hopes.
Bout time for Clusterfuck to decide about the pardon question. If he’s gonna do it- it should be before the first of the year- holiday season?
It takes both sides bending in order for there to be a bi-partisan agreement.
Well, you can ask Grover Norquist about this. This is going to be a very difficult and bizarre period, as the president discovers that with his approval rating in the low 30s and a Congress controlled by the Democrats that the decider is no longer the decider. Tristero is prone to speculating that he’ll just bail rather than face reality.
Redd
re: the calls. You don’t actually think there is any formula by which Bolton will pass, do you? Do you think Shrub’s insitance on sending him to the Hill means there has been some nasty little backroom deal?
Already?
Clusterfuck doesn’t much give a shit what happens to the goopers once he’s gone- He’d kind of like it if he can prove that they can’t get along without him.
rwcole - re pardons, won’t Bush wait until Libby has been convicted? They would definitely prefer that Libby be judged ‘not guilty’ and they can thumb their noses at Fitz. If they judge him guilty (duh!!!), THEN they can pardon. Just my guess.
lhp at 32 — I put nothing past these people — especially when it comes to hoisting a finger at the newly elected Dem-controlled Congress on their way out the power door. Hence the calls. If they think we aren’t watching, you never know what will happen…but if they know we are watching…

it would make the Dems look like eunichs. Redd’s right. Calling is a good idea.

Will they get Cheney’s smear right, and
Timmeh’s facial expressions?

Grandma- No if he’s gonna pardon- he’ll do it before the trial starts- to avoid the Cheney mess.
“As long as Jim Baker and his Iraq Panel pals are going to try and get President Bush to see reality . . . “
About this premise, let’s not our delude ourselves. The Baker panel is an attempted fig leaf for the boy king, and a definite trap for the so-called democrats on the panel (and all others who get on board). Don’t reinforce the charade.
OOOps. I meant sneer not smear?
Jack
And just to put my personal thoughts on this election into black and white, I believe that Rovian tactics did in fact help them. If it hadn’t been for all those last minutes slimey calls and flyers and their dumping of tons of money, we would have won those 55-60 seats.
And all the close ones would have gone our way. Except they really believed they had Virginia. And there, Webb should have won by 5-6 percentage points, but their tricks kept it close.
jayackroyd @ 31
I don’t think he’ll actually bail, but maybe he’ll just do a lot of bike riding and let Daddy’s people run things. On his previous failed ventures, he didn’t decide for himself when to get out. Wasn’t it on the Texas Rangers that he never did much of anything, just hung around the office telling dirty jokes and putting his feet up on his desk? It’ll be like that.
GrandmaJ @ 34
Bush the First stole the prosecution right out from under Larry Walsh and did a premptive pardon. I don’t think Fitz can lose. Moreover, it’s not Irving’s conviction the should fear, it is the revelations that will come out during the trial.
Patrick will have turned over the rock
in public
and exposed what’s crawling around underneath.
THAT’s what they are/should be afraid of. They could care less if Irving goes to jail. Just like they could care less that Judy Miller went to jail.

I actually like the sketches. It is facinating to watch them being done. Sometimes the courthouses hold “art shows” of some sketches from famous trials.
loosehead- Yep- that about says it all. They can’t afford the trial- WMDs rollin around again? I don’t think so.
Minnesotans, be sure to call Coleman’s in-state offices. He’s up again in ‘08, I think, and he’s running scared already. Opened an office in Moorhead just a few weeks ago. Push him hard. LTEs to the Strib would be great, too.
The Newsweek cover says everything there is to say about Bush and Daddy… Bush is tiny, tiny, tiny compared to his father.
rwcole - The Cheney mess? Oh, you mean getting him to testify? Well that makes sense. Cheney has announced already that even if he gets a subpoena, he will never testify - anywhere about anything under oath. Admittedly, this last statement I read someplace and now cannot remember where so I have so ‘proof’ but I wouldn’t put it past him.
GrandmaJ @ 43
Yes, exactly. Another of the priorities of the new Congress should be to enact some penalties for vote suppression that’ll actually matter to rich Republican backers — long prison terms, for example. Or allowing victims to sue for punitive damages.
I think Bush keeps Bolton around simply because he’s shorter than Georgie.

Evidently, on the say so of ONE Repub, 60, count ‘em, 60 Congressional investigators (you know, those folks who were looking into war profeteering and what happened to the Katrina money?) were let go.
There is nobody (OK almost nobdy) left on Capital Hill to do the investigating!
The article doesn’t mention it, but all the fedral IG offices have been gettig slashed too.
Nobody left. “Let the investigations begin”? I don’t think so folks. First you will have to spend months rebuilding the infrastructure with which to begin the investigations.
Howdja like them apples?

Little George could really shake things up and send Bill Clinton to the UN..
OldCoastie @

I second that thought and the g’ morning to Redd. My feelin’ on Revoltin’ Bolton is this:
If he IS such a masterful diplomat why waste his talents by sending him to the UN, an organization which Bu$hCo in general has little regard for other than as an occasional janitor to clean up Israeli and US created messes. I don’t agree that he is masterful at diplomacy, i.e. he doesn’t so much “build consensus” as bully people and is in general waaaayyy too much of a Cheney tool.
But just sayin’ he has talent, then lets use it to improve relations in some challenging post. Iran comes immediately to mind, or North Korea. I know the US doesn’t have relations with those countries (echoes of Bill and Monica) but with Bolton’s expertise normal constructive diplomatic relations with either one would be assured. Then again, you could send him over to Baghdad to tune up Malaki, so he stays on whatever page Bu$h decides to be on next week. The administration would have the added bonus of a fresh pair of Bu$h Crime Family eyes to scope out the situation on the ground in that hellhole.
If the above suggestions seem too challenging then send him off to Israel where he can spend his days singing to the choir. The only other one I can think of is too nice for him, but he could be sent to Paris to repair the damage Bu$hCo has done to Franco-American relations that had been so warm ever since the time of the original American Revolution.

Anyone who thinks the Bolton nomination is “dead on arrival” does not understand the influence of the NeoCon lobby over our elected representatives in D.C.. They have gotten what they wanted over the past six years. Is there any reason to believe things have changed?
The Cheney mess is a red herring; he’s talking about not testifying under oath in front of Congress if subpoenaed by them.
But he cannot skate if he refuses a subpoena by the DoJ, assuming DoJ finds evidence of a crime.
Don’t follow DeadEye’s misdirection. Our best hope at this point is that any Congressional hearing does not interfere with a DoJ investigation, and that the DoJ obtains the necessary evidence to nail DeadEye’s flabby white *ss to the wall.
I wonder if a certain civil suit will uncover evidence not previously found, or obstructed during the course of a DoJ investigation…

We saw that freedom earlier this week, when millions of Americans went to the polls to cast their votes for a new Congress. As a bald guy, I also have good toupee-dar and I have always thought Bolton wears a rug. Probably makes him feel taller.
Steve Clemons, who’s been following Bolton like Redd after Libby, weighs in on the Bolton re-nomination, and he’s got two basic points:
1. It will NOT be approved. Period.
2. Bush surprised Nancy Pelosi with this, as it was not mentioned in their little sit-down conversation, but was released to the press 7 minutes after she left the building. Was it just a little reminder to Nancy that Bush is still president? Kinda petty, but then look who we’re dealing with.
Steve also suggests three names as possible UN reps: Lincoln Chafee, outgoing Congressman Jim Leach, and Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky.
Chafee would be quite something. Not necessarily from a diplomatic point of view, but wouldn’t you love to see the look on the Walrus’ face when he hears that the guy who kept him from getting the UN job now will be getting it?
Rayne @ 67.
Agreed. The weight is with the DOJ investigation… In which, I await with so much optimism that the truth be FINALLY told…

Bolten will probably be confirmed Joe Lieberman parties with Pam from Atlas Shrugs so we know that vote is gone, all Bush has to do then is bring/bribe one Democratic Senator I think and then Darth Chenney decides it. Schumur and Hilary first time at bat in the Senate get made to look weak a few more loses for the center Dems and we start talking about electing new leaders. Yes! frame the question so bush is seen as causing the senate to move further left. Carvile and Rahm must be worried their first time at bat and the blogs (THEY MALIGN)are so worried that THEY ARE GOING TO BLOW IT. WE THE BLOGS ARE GOING TO CALL SENATORS ON THEIR BEHALF.
Personally, I think Ambassador Joe Wilson would be a perfect choice for UN Ambassador. Oh, but you want us to be realistic adults. All I can say, realistically, is John Bolton should go, Bush should start being conciliatory now, but resubmitting Bolton is a sign that he’s not ready to make nice. Until or unless he is (which I don’t think will ever happen)we need the strength of leadership that John Murtha offers as majority leader. I’m still stuck on how we make that happen.
Political trivia: Until Bush 41, Grover Cleveland was the only US President to serve as a term, lose an election, then return as US President. Bush 41 reassumed the Presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment.

The NYTimes is rporting that on the say so of a single repub, 60 Capital Hill investigators did not have their contrct renewed. That means there isn’t anybody out there doing the investigations on behalf of Congress.
Add to that, for last couple/few years the IG offices have had their bugets attacked under the pretense that Homeland Secuirty was going to do some of these audits and an some of these investiagtions were going to be redeplyed to toher agencies.
Only it didn’t actually happen that way.
So, when you hear the gleeful cry “let the investigations begin!”, ask yourself , how many months will be spend rebuilding the investigations infrastructed needed before any investiagtive work can start?
I lament Lamont’s loss. What really bothers is Lieberman’s win. ‘Blue Monday’, I guess. Strategy question for me is how to neutralize Joe? This guy lost the Democratic primary. I resent him.
Did I miss something? I thought Chavez in Venezuela, not Argentina, was angling for the Security Council seat that went to Guatemala.
If so then I see no reason to give credit to Bolten for that manuever. Chavez made that pretty easy by expressing himself the way he did when he visited New York, so that the Bolten and the Bush White House were bound to be happy with any other country from the region save Cuba.

Bush knows this won’t go through. But it is a neat trick that this makes one Dem refusal. The Democrats should refuse ALL bad candidates — even if there are 5, 10, whatever. But they won’t. That would mean they are obstructionist.
God only knows who Bush REALLY has in mind. So, while Democrats and the media make a big deal out of Bolton, Rove laughs.

Or is it just obvious, and I simply have fried ugly-judgement circuits

I was noticing that whatever he’s got on his head is not the same colour as his hair, so probably a rug. His hairdresser would touch up the moustache when he was doin’ the dye job, wouldn’t you think?.
I do not know who at MSNBC decided to give David Shuster the anchor chair this morning to talk politics…but BLESS YOU!
If Bush attempts Bolton with this lame duck congress it IS a test of whether he heard the public speaking at the ballot box, whether the repubs give a damn about same and whether the dems will stand up to what their people said and block the nomination.

That is just so WRONG.
Why is Bolton back again..AIPAC..IIRC. Both Chuck and Hillary have been very non-committal about voting against Bolton if he got to a full Senate vote.
I think it is time George introduces the twins on a national level.
