Tuesday night I got home from band rehearsal to find out that the Repulsicans had lost control of the House. I stayed up late to hear the news over and over again switching back and forth from FDL to the TV. Couldn't get enough of it.
Meanwhile at a nearby rehearsal, my friend was getting into it with his guitarist over the fact that his guitarist didn't vote. Not that he was too busy to vote, or couldn't vote, or was even "not into politics", but he was taking a very stubborn stand to not vote because "it doesn't matter".
Now, this is a "smart" guy who even donates time at a halfway house for teenage runaways. He was happy that a certain Democrat had beaten "that gross Republican" but he himself staunchly chose not to vote. His argument was that the think tanks and the lobbyists have all the power and blah blah blah, snooze, blah blah blah.
I find these kinds of people to be the biggest of bores. Usually everything in their lives is viewed in a similar, cynical way. They are above voting and try to make you feel foolish for voting and for thinking that you do make a difference.
Very thankfully, I was not raised this way. I was raised to boycott grapes and attend ERA marches before I could even vote. I've felt defeat and I've felt victory, but I've never felt that "it doesn't matter." Screw that. Now all we have to do is save the planet. Back to work.
My band is playing tonight at Safari Sam's in Hollywood at 11. Come on down and have a celebration with us!
I'd love to hear The Spin You're In in the comments section.

Nah. The Lake fell down go boom for a few minutes.
I win again. Amateurs ;-)
I’ve had a line from one song going through my head for the last week, and it applies to seemingly all things repug (but more poignently to some like Haggard); and I’ve been smiling all week.
“There are some things you can’t cover up with lipstick and powder.”
Girl Talk The Rockpile version (in honor of Mary).
Plus, I’m just waiting to win a photo caption contest.

Poor FDL servers. Been getting a lot of use lately. ; )

“I believe in miracles…you sexy thing”
My brother just sent me the new Bob Dylan and the new Mark Knopfler albums, but I loaned them to my sister before I listened much to them.
well you need to realize that a big % of america feels THE SAME WAY- in reality the chances of you voting in an election for someone who is actually going to represent YOU are pretty slim, we voted in what, 2 people who arent just rich guys this time? sometimes those rich peopel represent us, but often not
the problem however is that americans arent really mobolized to change that- note the same reason most people dont join unions, alot like the concept, last friday night dave foster gave a speech and in it he said he was talking somewere and said “what would you say about an organization that fought for better living conditions, a cleaner environment, and a future for your children?” some lady spoke up and said “a miracle”
this person obviously didnt know who dave was and what hes been doing with his entire life, but it goes to show that because of negative things that happen, perhaps even DECADES ago, americans have a tendency to avoid anything that will create conflict and might get their hands dirty- voting included, if they vote for someone who turns out to be scum… its their fault
anywya, i jsut told everyone everything they already knew, the point is: dont CONDEMN people, teach them
OT, but I have one thing after another that’s making me grin, and I had to share. From the NYTimes, via Glenn Greenwald:
Bold mine, that’s the part that I’m particularly grinning about.
Also, I met a congressional staffer at a going-away party for a friend last night, and in the course of conversation, realized that we’ll finally be able to reclaim the Smithsonian from the evil bastard that Newt and his cronies helped put in charge, which I hadn’t even thought about until then.
So many presents; this is like the best Christmas ever!
I don’t know about Banditelli, but I feel very well represented by my Senators Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett. As well as my Congressman Rob Bishopalkjdflksjaddskljf.
Sorry. I held in that laugh as long as I could.
My spin this week:
Ministry – Thieves
NIN – Head Like A Hole
VAST – Pretty When You Cry
Filter – Hey Man, Nice Shot
Poe – Angry Johnny
Alice in Chains – Angry Chair
I was moving all week so its been an angry week, but these tunes had me pumped on Monday and Tuesday.
I can’t believe I’ve actually fallen in love with a Death Cab for Cutie song.
Soul Meets Body.
OT– just watched the preznit give a speech honoring the Marines on their 231st birthday and celebrating the opening of the new museum in Quantico.
The response was tepid and he was crying at the end.
oh well.
Happy birthday to the Corps!
Donita, I’ve had the same experience with non-voters. Stubborn people who think I’m stupid for voting. “The government fixes all the elections, don’t you know anything?” was what one man told me.
I just gave up on trying to talk sense to people like that. If they aren’t going to even try…never mind.

Thats not bad actually. Who knew? Thanks for the heads up on this one.

Well all of life is a crapshoot but if you don’t play you never win any crap…people like that guitarist are motivated entirely by fear.
Speaking of which: I risk ridicule here but must finally confess.
I have been unable to ever email any of this blog to friends and yes, I did go to spotlight and a whole bunch of seemingly unrelated options came up that made my eyes glaze over… so please…after you get over your dizgust, can someone lay it down – step by simple step as in 1) 2) & 3) – how to SEND!!!!!!!???????
That’s the compilation CD I just made for Tommy Yum.

Now is the moment for everyone to reserve vacation time for (at least) the first weekend of November, 2008.
Seriously.
Now that the 2006 elections are in our rearview mirror, we all need to free ourselves up to serve as volunteers for the 2008 elections – right now.
yes, Raven — he should.
The troops deserve a real commander in chief.
He should be ashamed to stand in front of them.

I’ver had good luck with
1.) If you don’t vote, you can’t bitch, and
2.) it’s like the lottery — can’t win if you don’t buy a ticket. ;)
Point our the inherent danger in that thinking. It multiples the influence of those that do vote. If only 25% of voters turnout, then my vote is worth 4 times its value. It is like I voted 4 times. That is the mindset the lobbyist and think tanks want him to take — so their corrupt votes will count more.

Hi Spiderpaws,
The Spotlight function is to send a post to *media* types, hence the stuff about national/regional/state, TV, newspapers, etc, etc. To send to your friends I think you have to use the ‘Share and Enjoy’ bar, but I don’t know how that works. What I usually do is copy the URL from the browser window and e-mail that to them. Any a you guys know a better way?
Here’s my #1, in honor of George Allen, who – according to his sister – originally wanted to be a dentist.

Woooo Hooooo!!!
Thanks for the music! It’s therapeutic. Literally.
As part of my “how to get well from my brand NEW medical disorder” (lymphedema) program, we went out and spent a whole bunch of money (for us) on two snazzy things for me.
1) A wetsuit, so I can swim in the pool all winter. It’s cheaper, for a few hundred, than a pool heating system (a few thousand). It’s a pain in the butt to pull on and off, but it’s a hoot and a half for me — when I walk in it I feel like I’m in a space suit. Plus, I told Mr. K8 that it makes me even 10 times more buoyant than my left-over wheelchair chubbiness — which means if he ever wants to drown me in the pool, he’ll have a really hard time of it. ;-) Swimming/aquatic therapy is the very best thing for the lymphatics — water pressure acts like a whole-body compression stocking.
2) And here’s where the music comes in — A MINI-TRAMPOLINE!!! Wooo damn hooo!!! Turns out that the very best on-land exercise for the lymphatic system is jumping on a trampoline. Who knew?!?
Seems that when lymph nodes on a limb get damaged by trauma and surgery, the nodes in the trunk need to get all fired up to act as suction pumps to pull all that lymph fluid back in. [I’m giving the detail here for anyone who may also have this problem — seems to me that zennurse suggested a problem in this area. BTW — Where is she???? I miss zennurse! But since I was gone from here for a while, I may have missed some news about that amazingly wonderful person. Anybody know anything?]
So, jumping or even just bouncing gently on this fun new toy goes MUCH, MUCH BETTER with tunes, the fun is magnified WITH MUSIC.
This’ll be the very first “Spin I’m In” which will qualify as physical therapy!
Many, many thanks to you, Donita, for a terrific line-up!
OK, now watch me jump!
My father in law, who considers himself the resident gadfly, is constantly taking umbrage about some local, state, and/or federal political happenstance. I ask him what he did or how he voted to address the issues he goes on about. Every single time…every time…the one thing he doesn’t do is vote, because it “won’t make any difference”. My response to him every single time…every time…is
And no, he didn’t vote on Tuesday…and no, I haven’t heard a peep from him since.
Well, I’m pleased to say that the rest of us here may well have prevented your friend’s guitarist from getting the government he deserves.

I love spotlight and you, too!
I just have to say for the record to everyone here how impressed I have been with the diversity of taste in music the commentors of FDL have displayed since Donita started doing this column. FDL truly rocks! I’ve discovered several bands from folks here I would not necessarily have noticed on my own. Sure beats the shit out of that Bob Seger crap they listen to over at Red State.
FiniFini: I use a rather oldish mac laptap, Safari, Qwik Time…what else you wanna know?…also I also have highlighted the URL and sent that but doesn’t that send the whole blog as opposed to maybe the single one you want to send?
The spin that I’m in for 33 days and counting is the wedding mix that my (brand spankin’ new) wife and I made for our wedding. We included the songs that the wedding party walked down the aisle to as well as some favorites of ours.
We put the mix on CD’s as wedding favors for our guests. So here’s my (and Mrs. Shooogarp’s) spin.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
Blackbird – Beatles
Bubble Toes – Jack Johnson
This is Our Life – Mary Beth Maziarz (local Park City artist)
Jackson – Walk The Line Soundtrack
La-La Means I Love You – The Delfonics
Ice Cream – Sarah Mclachlan
Don’t Speak in English – Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez
Woman – John Lennon
Little Silver Ring – The Samples
Strong Enough – Sheryl Crow
Feels Like Home – Chantal Kreviazuk
(Sorry no linkies)
I came down the aisle Stephen Colbert style to a funkadelic Stevie Wonder song a friend gave me on a CD. I can’t find any title information for it, but it was great! People loved it!
Ooops! yard emergency with the neighbors cheeky rooster, back in a minute….

“Sadly, No.”
Oh well. At least I’ll be FIT in time to push that shopping cart around the streets on our “retirement program,” ’cause there went our IRA contribution this year. ;-)
I’m just thankful that the one and only bona fide Lymphedema Treatment Center is in the Valley nearby (Scottsdale) as opposed to someplace like Tucson. Once I get signed up there, I’ll have to go for massage and limb-wrapping EVERY SINGLE DAY for about a month or so.
And the center, praise heaven, IS covered by our insurance. That’s a BIG sigh of relief.
spiderpaws @ 48
If you send the url in the address bar from the individual blog post page it will send just that column’s link and not the whole blog. For instance, if you want to send this column, you would send: http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..eet-it-is.
Rule of thumb is this, if you are on the page reading the whole article and you see the comments section, the URL in the address bar will be the longform individual page URL. All you got to do is highlight, copy and paste and voila!

Mrs K8, I suffer from a condition similar to lymphedema called chronic venous stasis syndrome. The treatments are similar in both cases. If your husband is willing, regular leg massages starting at the ankle and working your way up the legs will help circulation as well. I do not have a Mrs Finito to do this, but I have a handheld back massager that I use for this purpose that works well and helps a great deal.

Why would anyone be surprised? As a dyed in the wool Republican, I sincerely felt the need for a change. The rot and corruption of the party of Lincoln stunk to high heaven.
Low and behold, the Democrats take over both houses of Congress, and almost immediately the likes of Pelosi, Dean and now even John Conyers have decided to take a pass on impeachment, no talk of the returning our constituional rights that have been decimated by the Patriot act as well as the Military Commissions Act.

miss your podacst this week! was hoping to hear of your adventures with Geoge. great playlist anyway. Have a good weekend.
Just got The Peanut down for her nap, and sat down to listen to a little music on the new fabu birthday iPod, and read something mindless. But the first ten songs off the scrambled playlist deck were so good, I had to share with you guys:
Norah Jones “Come Away With Me”
Sade “Like A Tattoo”
Tears for Fears “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”
Frankie Goes to Hollywood “Relax”
Indigo Girls “Secure Yourself”
Heart “Crazy on You”
Carole King “I Feel The Earth Move”
Eric Clapton “Layla”
Simon & Garfunkel “America”
Squeeze “Tempted”
I know, weird eclectic mix. But somehow, thrown together, it worked for me today. Now, back to relaxing. Ahhhh…great playlist today — as always — Donita. :)
Rock the vote!! Have a great show tonight.

Redshift @ 15, the thought of Leahy as new chair of the judiciary committee makes a lot of things more palatable. He’s one Dem no one has to convince me to trust.
And he pretty much is singlehandedly responsible for us not having CHeney/Rumsfeld/Addington pro-torture, pro-destruction of American military stooge Haynes sitting on the Fourth Circuit right now. That he pulled off as ranking minority member under the radar and before some of the Haynes torture/abuse solicitationsbuthecallsthemmemos came to be common knowledge.

Lack of podcas this week is my fault. I moved last weekend and don’t have my studio set up yet so I was not prepared to put it together just yet and begged her for a week off. I promise we will be back next week with the podcast, I was bummed not doing one this week too.

That is great news for Smithsonian staffers. I had lots of friends at SI, and Lawrence Small drove some out altogether to other museums or to early retirement, and made life miserable for those that remained. Some of the best and brightest left rather than work with him [Spencer Crew from American History went to the Underground Railroad Museum in Cincy, and Lonnie Bunch went to Chicago Historical Society, to name just two]. Small politicized everything at the Smithsonian.

Mods, sorry about the second posting. I thought my first comment about the Smithsonian had disappeared into the ether, so I rewrote it. Feel free to discard the second.
lol, Fini, no worries…..cu next week
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 60
Ah! I will need to learn a little more about that. I have a feeling I’ll be sent to a specialist (a vacular surgeon?) to rule out my having such a problem like chronic venous insufficiency. Is stasis syndrome a particular form of CVI? I’ve been reading as much as I can about all this stuff. There’s a lot to wade through. I think there’s such a connection between lymph and capillaries, that it behooves one to pay attention to all of it. What an education it’s been!
I have to be careful about massage. I asked my (former) physical therapist if he knew how to do lymphedema massage, and he said yes. WRONG. I blew up like a balloon. Only then did I read up on it and find out that with lymph problems, you have to massage the trunk FIRST, then the limbs, otherwise the back-up of fluid becomes excruciating. Hence the ballooning. At the center they’ll teach me to do self-massage after the first month of treatment — and Mr. K8 said he’ll be happy to learn how to do it for me too.
Do you have to wear compression hose? And worry about nicks and scratches because of infection? Little did I know when I got cellulitis last year with that evil MRSA superbug, it got a good start because of the protein lymph soup the bugs love so much.
Do you have a special exercise program, too?

If your friends want to leak any particularly egregious internal communications for us to pass along if this works out, put them in touch with me at razorsharpwit AT gmail. Ms. Redshift used to be a contract employee at SI, but it’s been a number of years so she doesn’t have as many connections as she used to.
It was one of those great moments — we’d just met this person and found out she works on science policy for a Dem congresswoman, and in the course of talking about what science fans we are, Ms. Redshift was telling about the horrors of Small at the Smithsonian. And she says “what committee is that under?” and we kind of goggled and thought, “Damn! We can actually do something about this now!” I keep having those moments — there are so many things I’ve been pissed about for twelve years or more that I hadn’t even been thinking beyond how to keep them from getting worse.
Andrew @ 64 -
I know the CW here is to wait and see, but I have to admit that my off the cuff internal reaction is the same as yours and I’ve seen a lot of “wait and see” admonitions and all kinds of things that have all failed – not bc the Dems as a minority had NOTHING they could do, but bc the things they had that they could do took more guts, discipline and commitment than they were willing to show.
Now the ball is in their court and 2008 is right around the corner. There is a lot of jockeying going on to place the theme of conservatism to the fore for Dems – from former President Clinton on through the ranks – and to equate being conservative with not holding the Executive branch accountable bc it would be a process easily bogged down. OTOH, there is the “wait and see” camp too.
I do think that Dems don’t seem to see or understand how many people voted for accountability, though, and are having a very strong visceral reaction – that will be hard to overcome later – to the flight from confrontation with the Executive Branch over misuse and abuse of power.
One reason Congressional ratings are so poor is the flight from acting as a check on the Executive. People resent the power grabs of the President, but almost expect it – it is what Presidents do and earns him a lowish approval rating. People are SHOCKED, though, that Congress does nothing to check that grab and it is why Congress ranks even lower in approval than the President.
Give them time – sure. But the tactic of immediacy in claiming that impeachment is “off the table” and “not going to happen” really perpetuates the them of Dems as either doing nothing or as flip floppers if they come back to this later, so hopefully someone is working into the tactics how they overcome that very strong impression that they are leaving with a middle group that only very reluctantly voted for them now. I don’t call politics, so who knows and maybe there is a good reason to discount the polls that say a majority of Americans a) favor impeachment if the President lied us into war, b) favor impeachment if the President lied to us about 9/11 and c) believe he did lie about both.
Hiding behind its minority status worked for 2006, but imo, which is politically uninformed, winning in 2008 after 2 years in the majority in both Houses is going to be very tought for a party that runs away from its constitutional responsiblity to check and discipline the Executive branch.
What else are they needed for? Even minimum wage – very laudable – CAN be effected through state action if nothing else (as seen from the states that have taken that action). Healthcare also. Obvioiusly, those things are likely more effectively done on a national footing but one of the major things that cannot accomplished by States is Executive branch discipline. Congress stands alone on that (and on advice and consent for judges and Exec appointments).

I’d rather see him front and center talking about how effective the 50 State Strategy was, too, but maybe he knows what he’s doing. One thing that this election proved is that the Conventional Wisdom in Washington doesn’t necessarily have much effect on what actually happens, so maybe he’s decided he’s better off convincing the people who will actually make the decisions (state parties, newly-elected candidates) than trying to change the closed minds on the cocktail weenie circuit.
Here’s more on the Carville/Ford/Dean. thing. WE need to nip this now.

Oooooh! Thanks so very much for the tip.
“Food grade silicon spray”?!? Yikes, wait until Mr. K8 hears that tip. He already laughs himself silly at watching me do this — and my telling him I feel like a sausage stuffed in a casing.
Oh dear. Where ever will the jokes lead? I’ll never hear the end of it.
[Seriously — sounds like a good tip. You a scuba diver? I understand I shouldn’t be bitching, since the suit is Henderson Hyperstretch Titanium. They tell me it would be lots worse in the regular material.]
LOL Bad hair day? ; )
Uh…YEAH!!!
That’s the ticket. You should go into diplomacy, you’re good at offering face-saving measures. :-)
Just don’t offer any to Little Boots, OK?
Christy – Madsen (I know, tin foil hat alert — but it he nails pretty often) today says that Luskin will present Fitz with the Dark Lord’s head on a platter a la KKKarl. Rover’s indictment will disappear, Scooter will make a similar deal, and Deadeye will step down (bad ticker, you know…). Poppy’s people take over, and the heir apparent to the GOP throne will take Cheney’s place.
Presumably we would fitz our last fitz, and the whole treasonous backstory would never see the light of MSM day.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 97
Are you kidding, Fini? I’ve seen him on all kinds of show. But he does need to speak up a bit more, he’s far too modest about his 50-state “stratergy Ideer”.
Mrs. K8 @ 108
Its cold underwater in NJ, even in summer. I hate the 7mm suit, but there’s no getting around it save a dry suit, but they have their own issues.
Silicon makes a HUGE difference. Food grade means you could eat it if you want and probably wont aggravate any allergies you may have.
Here is the intro music on Mark Knopfler’s news site. Smooooth.

Dear Mary 4 @87, thank you so much for saying this. I said something similar last thread and it was suggested that I was screaming and was not smart. Thank you so much for pointing out that *oversight* is the first duty of Congress. I think I need to remember that.
So here’s my song:

In all fairness, my TV time this week has been limited so I probably have missed him on some shows. I do think though he should defend himself better, but the idea that he is working an insider strategy may be what he’s doing. It would fit his style too, while Rah-Rah Rahm is making a fool of himself claiming credit in public, Dean is wise to court the deep insiders to give him true credit. Smart strategy if that’s the case.

I’m a Jersey girl originally myself. South. Am usually a swimmer in cold water — been known to take a quick swim off Cape May in October — but the docs say I should avoid temp extremes, rats. No saunas either. Sigh.
I really am grateful for the tip. Does the spray have to be washed off each time? Luckily I only need a 5mm.
What general part of Jersey do you hail from? — unless that’s too nosy…I miss the ocean desperately. Just the sound, if nothing else, makes everything better.
Apologies if this has been posted earlier but for anyone who might not have seen it:
“Lawsuit in Germany will seek criminal prosecution of outgoing defense secretary & other US officials for alleged roles in Abu Ghraib/Gitmo abuses” (including gonzales/tenet/cambone/yoo/addington/etc)

What’s that old saw about the wheels of justice grinding slow but exceedingly fine?
two beers @ 110
O God, if there is a God, we poor humans need both mercy and justice but do you think we could *see it happening*? Please?
Waccamaw –
Oh my! Thanks for that.
I knew about Rummy, but not the extended list. Great news!
Maybe they’ll all move to a Paraguayan ranch together.
Thank you, Waccamaw at 117
If there is anything to be learned in this election its to quit taking advice from the Carville types and for god sake from the David Brooks types. There are time to play the middle but you pick and choose where.
The Lamont loss was due to factors that had nothing to do w/ being a progressive and everything to do w/ Repbulican money and support for Lieberman (an anomaly unique to him personally) and a lack of support from established Dems. How are you supposed to win a senate seat with big name Dem support? Jeez.
Hayduke @ 122
Not to mention a $387,000 slush fund.
If only we can get a convert like Susan Collins, then we could push for action on investigating that fund.
A slush fund that size ranks right up there with Nixon.

That was not a mere happenstance.
Some of my current obsessions:
Silversun Pickups “Lazy Eye”
Etro Anime “Diablo”
The 88 “All ‘Cause of You”
Chungking “Voodoo”
Ima Robot “Creeps Me Out”
Persephone’s Bees “Way to Your Heart”
Regina Spektor “Fidelity” (She’s so sweet, I could eat her brains like jam.)
Black Sun Empire “Arrakis”
Ford Pier “Confession is Good for a Laugh”
Venus Hum “Pink Champagne”
Brazilian Girls “Jique”
two beers @ 110
That was then, this is now. We no longer have to settle for the story disappearing down the memory hole unless Fitz rescues us. Especially since anyone who is pardoned can’t avoid testifying. It’s a whole new ballgame.
encephalopath @ 125
OK, this is the first playlist that does not contain an artist I know… Excellent!
(btw: maybe I am not too surprised, given the brain food comment?)
encephalopath @ 125
oooo, haven’t heard of some of these bands. I’ll check’em out.
HotFlash @ 124
I know it wasn’t, Jane has done a great job showing that for sure.
–and typo in my post above. …WITHOUT big name Dem. support….
I hope Jane and Christy and crew get timeto do some more good blogs on the Dean vs. Carville/Rahm thing. I also think, like someone suggested above the Dean is playing the insider route more than running around yapping on the TV. Fine if it works. Its a much more Professional style anyway.

Thanks, Hayduke et al.—I was swinging by mainly to see if anyone had put this in here.
Whatever his intentions, and I think it’s now clear that they are not good, Carville is clearly a saboteur and should be dealt with as one.
As for Ford, any black man dating back to the pre-diversity has got to see this for the set-up that it is, especially with the earlier nonsense someone (Matalin?) was floating about Steele taking over the national GOP; basically it’s part of an offer to negotiate a time-out-in-place. I’m sure Ford has some kinfolk that can help him out here.
Redshift @ 126
I agree. the whole problem with the Fitz investigation was that it was gamed to the Repug advantage: the GJ secrecy and the drawn out timeline were meant to get through the elections. They made it through ‘04, but not ‘06. The bigger and broader inve3stigations will start now.
The Dems. Should trade Carville’s slimly ass for Chafee! The dude is a plant as far as I’m concerned. Where has this bitch been anyway?? Hell, didn’t he help Kerry lose in 2004?? They are scared to death of the netroot types taking there jobs. That and he has a concrete ego that is sooo stuck in 1992. They want credit for something they had nothing to do with and did everything to sabatoge.

The silicon spray won’t bother the suit and shouldn’t bother you. Washing it off is unnecessary.
I could never live more than an hour from the shore.
Donita Sparks @ 103
hey, you’re welcome. if you can get past the singer’s haircut, the rest of the that album has some fun, loopy stuff on it. don’t know whatever became of them.
btw – love that Squirrel Nut Zippers video
Tuesday I texted a very good friend and just asked “are you voting?” The next day she asked me why I did that, and I said I was just curious and thought I’d remind her (plus she doesn’t have a car, and I would’ve driven her to the polls).
After a few emails she WENT OFF on me for “waggin my finger” and trying to make her feel bad. This is a very smart girl whose family has been put through the wringer on account of the dispicable “justice” system and non-existent health care system here in Texas. I mean, family-destroying stuff. Yet she didn’t think voting had anything to do with that.
SHEESH!
Sadly, it turned into a major fight, which brought up other stuff, and this friendship is probably over.
(But I look forward to texting her in two years to remind her to vote.)

Preview and Edit just don’t work. Sorry…
Boy, can I relate to this. My ex-partner didn’t vote. None of my three siblings voted. My best friend in the world and her husband didn’t vote. It was like beating my head against the wall to try to get them to see how important this election was. They all had different reasons.
My ex-partner at least seemed to feel guilty for not getting involved. He is hoping Kucinich runs in the primaries in ‘08 and says if he does, he’ll register for the express purpose of voting for him.
My best friend and her husband said essentially: “The Republicans are fascists, but the Democrats won’t do anything to stop them.” They are now pointing to the fact that Pelosi is taking impeachment off the table as proof that the Democrats have no spine, never mind a political killer instinct, and will get their asses kicked all around the floor in 2008. She said, quote: “They should be stepping on the Republican’s necks until their tracheas collapse – but they don’t have the balls. If they ever grow some stones, I’ll vote for them.”
My eldest sister and her husband didn’t register. My next oldest sister is a dimwit and is completely apolitical – but at least she comes by her apathy honestly. My youngest sister was “too busy” and “All the people I’d vote for were way ahead in the polls anyway” – and they did, in fact, win. So frustrating.
On the other hand, all of my work colleagues – even some Republicans – voted Democratic this time. My nephews – all five of them – and my neice, voted. Where they got their political interest, I really don’t know. So all hope isn’t lost, I guess.
hey donita, i feel the same about people who don’t vote. my personal opinion is, if you don’t vote you don’t have any right to complain about the state of the government. on a lighter note, i read that you were at cmj recently. my friends band the trucks played, but i know there’s a bajillion bands that played there so i doubt you saw them. but i thought i’d let you know they’re playing in l.a. on november 14 at some place called the silverlake lounge. if your bored and feel like dancing go check em’ out!
EPU’d, p*ssing into the void now.
But I thought I’d share this anyhow.
My friend’s father lost his bid for a local office by 30 votes.
A mere 30 votes.
Half the parents of a classroom of children at the local elementary school.
That’s all it took to re-seat for yet another term one lazy sack of sh*t Repug, who doesn’t attend his meetings but draws a paycheck and healthcare. The same Repug who voted down numerous ballot initiatives that should have come before the public to fund additional fire dept. and police dept. staffing.
It matters a lot, that one vote, because it’s not just one vote. There are always handfuls of folks who think that way, and they cost the entire community.
As for my spin…I don’t think I have a theme this week, kind of like a lap around the neighborhood.
