Charlie Rangel wants to evict Dick Cheney:
Harlem's newly powerful Rep. Charles Rangel wants to stick it to his White House nemesis Vice President Cheney - by taking over his spacious House office.
At the same time, the veteran congressman offered a limp olive branch to the vice president yesterday, saying he regretted publicly calling him an SOB last week.
"I take back saying that publicly. I should have reserved that for him when we were together privately," said Rangel. "Believe me, he would have understood."
Rangel (D-Harlem), poised to become the next chairman of the important House Ways and Means Committee, spoke of the need for bipartisanship with the Republicans, even as he continued his feud with Cheney.
"Mr. Cheney enjoys an office on the second floor on the House of Representatives that historically has been designated as the Ways and Means chairman," Rangel mused. "And, I've talked with [future Speaker of the House] Nancy Pelosi ... and I'm trying to find some way to be gentle as I restore the dignity of that office to the chair."
The White House declined to comment.
In the past, Rangel has branded the vice president a "draft dodger" and Cheney has predicted that Rangel would destroy the economy as head of the Ways and Means Committee.
I admit this is mostly just schadenfreude, but given the campaign rhetoric engaed in by Bush, Cheney and a legion of others about Nancy Pelosi and her dangerous varietally hued committee chairs, it's quite a poetically artful move. According to the NYT, current Ways and Means chairman Bill Thomas allows Cheney to use the office. They quote Rangel as saying "It’s going to be my office. That’s right, it is.” Expect much hand-wriging on the part of the right about how lacking in the spirit of bipartisanship this is, but the first Democrat who echoes these sentiments gets to go hunting with Dead Eye.

If Cheney wants an office, I believe there’s one on the other side of the building. His lone constitutional duty, other than waiting for the president to die or be removed from office, is to preside over the Senate.
Not the House - the Senate.
The Constitution. It’s not just for shredding any more.
(Of course, if Bill Thomas wants to let Cheney borrow some other office controlled by the minority, he’s free to do that.)
I am LOVING what Jim Webb is saying about SOCIAL JUSTICE right now!!!!!

I LOVE Charlie Rangel, and I love seeing him stick it to the arrogant Dick. Politely! Of course. Charlie’s a class act.
I just got caught up hearing Jim Webb speaking about social justice, the little guy getting screwed over. A thing of beauty. He’s a good speaker. MSNBC, however, left him in mid-speech. Rats! CNN wasn’t even covering his presser at all, and it’s not on C-Span. Double rats!
Bipartisanship my ass.
Rangel is my congressman and I was so pleased on election night when he wore a pin on his lapel that had BUSH with a redline through it.
It’s been on with Charlie and Dick for a while and everytime it heats up, Rangel gets a big “Hell, Yeah!” from here!

Wonderful! The fireworks have started. I need help - I found myself feeling sorry for Chimpy yesterday watching his presser. Then I remembered who he was and what he has done to this country.

I heard a congresswoman on Randi Rhodes show say she doesn’t want congress to be looking backwards and I said “What?!?”. I want congress to investigate everything that the admin has been lying about. From day one. Everything. That’s a good way for the democrats to take the presidency in 08. Keep the lies and garbage out in the open.
Netroots on CNN (”How much sway…”) next after the break.
Cheney is squatting w/Thomas. Thomas is getting new digs (seeing as he is being evicted-Bah hahaha) so Cheney gets to move with him.
If Cheney has a beef, it’s with Thomas.
Rangel probably won’t even bother talking to Cheney. All he has to do it to remind Thomas to take out the trash, and any squatters, on the way out.

If Americans had wanted Congress to play nice with President Cheney, they would have voted for Republicans on Tuesday.
Good for the House dems. I tried to watch the presser for Reid. There was Reid, Schumer and “Durbin”?? Anyway, their fawning over Schumer who got ‘them’ the Senate (hey guys, it is OUR Senate you fools) made me turn the channel. Sorry, I should learn to be more caritible.

Rangel is my Rep, too. And I live in Hudson Heights (Oy! We got Jewish people here). So, it’s not just “D-Harlem” vs. “D White Man” as the NY “D” News would like to square it.

Cheney should definitely get a smaller office. He only need room for a shredding machine…right?
Mehlman falling on Rove’s sword. So to speak.
beth meacham @ 67
Maher outed him on Larry Bling last night
Rangel isn’t being un-bipartisan. He SHOULD have the traditional office of the Ways and Means chairman. The fact that Cheney had the office is a symbol of the GOP Congress’ all-too-willing eagerness to kowtow to whatever W and Deadeye wanted. Well, the days of anyone in Congress groveling before Cheney’s overbearing demands is over. Restore Congress to what it once was, which is NOT to be a rubberstamp for the executive branch! Go, Chairman Rangel! Reclaim the office your position deserves, and do a good job with it for the welfare of our country.
Blue America gets its due on CNN’s Situation Room for its fundraising and support for the Dems, and when they look at the right wing online support for their side . . . they’ve got nothin’ but envy!

More brain bleach! Stat!
Rep. Rangel will do the job. He has much controlled, intellectual anger.
Oh my! Darth Cheney occupies the office that is now supposed to belong to Rangel? It’s possible that once evicted, Dead eye Dick will leave some evil vapours that no doubt cling to him lingering in that office. But if Rangel can find a way to fumigate it, I’m all for restoring dignity to the office of the ways and means chairman.
Ok, Lieberman is out at Defense, they have some guy named Adams. What about this scenario? Cheney is indicted, and resigns, the new bipartisan (ack..cough) Bush appoints Lieberman as his VP. Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell (R) appoints Schlesinger as Senator to fill out Joe’s term. Senate goes back to 50 50 with Lieberman breaking ties. He could turn everything over to the R’s without breaking any promises. Like that matters. Lieberman gets big power, Slesinger gets his payback for being a good boy in the election.
Remember all the chortling in the press and amongst the `pugs when Hillary Clinton had to give up a larger office when the `pugs won the Senate in 2002?
Turnabout’s fair play.
Cheney only needed this large office so that he could cram in much of the House leadership as possible and read them the riot act, concerning what they would and would not do regarding legislation.
I think that phase of Cheney’s influence on governance has now passed; therefore, he don’t need no fucking office in the House.
Webb said that Bush should come out and denounce the tactics used in this election–how divisive, how unnecessarily divisive they were.
Yay, Webb!
Bush can denounce the tactics by action: firing Rove. His words…lies. Bush lies when the truth would serve him better. He chooses to lie when he could deflect. Only his actions can speak truth.
Salut to Ed Bradley.
Rove will leave soon. Desperation prevails.
David Brooks gives advice to the Democrats (and comments about blogs)
Given this advice, we can only hope that Speaker to be Grandmother Nancy Pelosi was not too corrupted by talking to a former prosecutor, mother, daughter of a miner from WV who was stuck yesterday in the Cleveland airport. The country is at stake. OTOH, it’s just possible the country would be better off if it just ignored David Brooks. Just a thought.
From behind the wall: David Brooks on the Middle

Schlesinger was far from a “good boy” for Karl Rove in the CT election. If Lieberman gets an appointment with the Bush administration, Rell will not choose Schlesinger as his replacement. Maybe Nancy Johnson - she is available.

You might want to check Dick’s freezer for $12 billion missing CPA and Iraqi funds as soon as you get in the door…
*xyz — my theory (not evidence) is that Rove has become a political liability, first with the public, because he’s perceived as part of the corruption of politics — one of the issues the voters reportedly said was important on Tuesday — and second with his own party, by misguiding his party to defeat and misleading them about what would work and what the numbers were saying. It was his strategy of polarizing the country and playing only to the rightwing base that contributed to the Republicans’ huge loss.
Third theory: only Democrats keep losing consultants.

Stalking scarecrow from the previous thread:
scarecrow @ 147
In my view, the GOP narrative is that policies don’t matter; what’s important is electing someone who “shares your values” (for instance, Dubya didn’t campaign on the effectiveness of his anti-terror strategy, but rather on the claim that he “understands the stakes”).
The Dem counter-narrative should be that, no, reality matters — in other words, results matter. So, on terrorism, don’t do what sounds macho, do what works.
Yes, and the phrase that you’re looking for is betrayal of trust. And the antidote is common sense.

Impeaching Cheney would result in a situation less awkward.
You see, if Cheney has no job in government, even he would have to recognize that he has no claim to that office and thus graciously return it to Rangel…who surely would vote to have his ass thrown out….bwah-hahahahahah
