The biggest success last night went to a man who won't be going to the U.S. Senate. Ned Lamont is the one who spoke, before anyone, for everyone who had had enough. There weren't many Democrats willing to just say no about Iraq before Ned came along and said it, loudly, clearly, unapologetically. Because of the issues Ned raised, the floodgates of support opened as Americans rushed to embrace people who would stand up to Bush and stand up to his rubber stamp Congress.
Let me point to Kentucky, the first state to report electoral results last night. There were 3 Democratic challengers polling reasonably well against Republican incumbents but, in the end, only outspoken progressive John Yarmuth won a seat. The Democratic Inside-the-Beltway establishment was most enthusiastic about retired congressman Ken Lucas, a conservative who gave every indication of going to Washington and being a Liebermanesque type rubber stamp for the awful corporate policies of the Bush Regime. Even worse was Mike Weaver, a virulent homophobe and right wing loon who seems to have wandered into the wrong party when he was drunk.
Reading directly from the DCCC playbook, Chris Matthews was celebrating the grandeur and brilliance of Rahm Emanuel on MSNBC last night. I doubt Howard Fineman got him to actually pull his head out of his ass but Fineman did point out that Emanuel didn't support Yarmuth at all. "He was Rahm's 4th choice among Democrats who wanted that seat." That's right; Emanuel only wanted corporate, or "business friendly" Democrats who wouldn't make waves about the war or anything else, losers like Lucas and his pet (losing) candidate in FL-13, Christine Jennings.
Before we get into why Rahm Emanuel is a disgrace to the DCCC and why this great victory last night happened despite his bumbling and venality, let's just look at who won what in the House. So far (Wednesday, 6 AM, PT) there are 27 Democratic gains:
AZ-05 Harry Mitchell v. Hayworth AZ-08 Gabrielle Giffords (Kolbe open) CA-04 Jerry McNerney v. Pombo CO-07 Ed Perlmutter (Beauprez open) CT-05 Chris Murphy v. Johnson FL-16 Tim Mahoney (Foley open) FL-22 Ron Klein v. Shaw IN-02 Joe Donnelly v. Chocola IN-08 Brad Ellsworth v. Hostetler IN-09 Baron Hill v. Sodrel IA-01 Bruce Braley (Nussle open) IA-02 Dave Loesback v. Leach KS-02 Nancy Boyda v. Ryun KY-03 John Yarmuth v. Northup MN-01 Tim Walz v. Gutnecht NH-01 Carol Shea-Porter v. Bradley NH-02 Paul Hodes v. Bass NY-19 John Hall v. Kelly NY-20 Kirsten Gillibrand v. Sweeney NY-24 Michael Arcuri (Boehlert open) NC-11 Heath Shuler v. Taylor OH-18 Zack Space (Ney open) PA-04 Jason Altmire v. Hart PA-07 Joe Sestak v. Weldon PA-10 Chris Carney v. Sherwood TX-22 Nick Lampson (DeLay open) WI-08 Steve Kagen (Green open)
And there are 8 seats still too close to call:
CT-02 Courtney v. Simmons PA-08 Murphy v. Fitzpatrick NC-08 Kissell v Hayes NM-01 Madrid v Wilson OH-02 Wulsin v Mean Jean OH-15 Kilroy v Pryce PA-06 Murphy v Gerlach WA-08 Burner v Reichert WY-AL Trauner v Cubin
If you've been following the specifics of the campaign to break the Republican dominance you can't help but notice several things: many of Rahm Emanuel's most cherished candidates are not on this list. And many of the names that are, are men and women who he either actively fought or just ignored.
Where is Tammy Duckworth, on whose campaign he lavished– and wasted– over $3 million in a colossal ego battle? That was $3 million dollars that could have been spread around to assure victories in 5 or 6 races that could have easily been won, like Angie Paccione's in CO-04 or, tragically, in NC-08 where a mere 468 votes separate grassroots hero Larry Kissell and rubber stamp wingnut Robin Hayes.
One of the most important victories of the night was Jerry McNerney's 53-47% (85,551- 76, 196) triumph over Dirty Dick Pombo, one of the most extremist, corrupt and dangerous members of he 109th Congress. Not only was this not a targeted race it is a perfect example of how Emanuel fought against grassroots Democrats to try to impose his will. The McNerney story has been told many times, I just want to remind you that Emanuel and his sleazy corporate-whore ally, Ellen Tauscher, tried to impose a pro-business hack on CA-11. They made Jerry waste thousands of grassroots dollars fighting off a well-financed Inside-the-Beltway juggernaut. Unlike in many other cases around the country, McNerney survived Emanuel's attempts to remove some people in the district actually wanted who has values and ideas people in the district were eager to get behind. To Emanuel, McNerney was too anti-war, too anti-corporate and, worst of all, too independent minded.
Jan Schneider wasn't as fortunate. She would have beaten extremist loon Vern Buchanan in FL-13 last night. Instead Emanuel and his posse were able to shoehorn in a Republican-lite banker who inspires exactly no one. And, of course, she was defeated last night in a very costly race. If voters want a Republican, especially in a Republican district like FL-13, they vote for the real thing, not for one masquerading as a Democrat. I don't want to even talk about FL-16, where Emanuel did manage to force a real Democrat Dave Lutrin out of the race so he could insert a wealthy Republican– Tim Mahoney, who won last night. Why don't I want to talk about it? I think there will be some investigations around that race and how Foley got outed and I don't want to get subpoenaed in that one.
But the point is this: Emanuel gave no help– or too little too late help– to many victors and, worse still, near victors, while squandering a fortune on his shill candidates, many of whom lost. These shills, like Rahm himself, don't represent the people of a district; they represent national and business interests often antithetical to working people and consumers and to the very values and principles the Democratic Party is built around.
Don't be fooled when brain-dead CNN reporters get finished talking knowledgeably about the K-Fed/Britney split and segue into Rahm's great triumph. They weren't paying attention when he ran to the front of the parade to make believe he was leading it. Enjoy the national sweep that brought Democrats majorities in the House, the Senate, Governorships and state legislatures and that has helped to set a tone for future victories in districts throughout the country by offering encouragement to the Democrats most important and powerful strength: it's grassroots. And when someone tells you how great Rahm did and how right-wing Democrats will control… something, just say this: "Carol Shea-Porter, Bruce Braley, John Hall, Kirsten Gillibrand, Chris Murphy, Dave Loebsack, Mike Arcuri, Chris Carney, Joe Sestak, Patrick Murphy, Ed Perlmutter, Tim Walz, John Yarmuth, Gabby Giffords."
Yes, Rahm won the coin toss and Heath Shuler decided to run as a "Democrat" in North Carolina instead of as a Republican in Tennessee and he beat Republicrook Charlie Taylor–a good thing– but the anti-choice right-wing Shuler is an exception and not a rule, although, of course, that is the face the DCCC will work to get all over the media.

And a big THANK YOU to you, Howie, for all your work to make a Blue America.
Howie, take a bow. mega-props to you!
EPU’d-Rayne, it is a hopeful omen for turning Columbus blue on the 18th!
Back to the seminars with you Dick! YOU TOO CAN MAKE LOTS OF MONEY SELLING OVERPRICED SHIT (results not typical)
And Howie, thanks for all that you did with Blue America.
I need more information on the Duckworth situation, it’s been brought up over and over on FDl and I am ignorant?
THANK YOU HOWIE. Joe Sestak rocks.
In light of last night’s HUGE success, the animosity toward Rahm on this site strikes me as quite poor.
Howie, great work by you and us all!
What happened to the State Legislatures?
That’s important for (1) leg up on 2008, (2) looking ahead to future redistricting (but that’s about 5 years out), and (3) growing our farm teams.
EPU’d but now on topic :)
The more I think about it, the more Rahm thinks we are even dumber than the fundies.
The Republicans never, ever go to the Washington Post and complain that the fundies are driving them off the cliff–except in this last week when it became clear they’d lose. To do so after a big win (”moral values” anyone?) is inconceivable. The GOP may simply decide not to actually implement the fundie agenda, but they always, always publicly support it.
Rahm won’t even give us that much. If he won’t acknowledge us in public, he sure as hell won’t in private.
We shouldn’t wait for Rahm to try to knife Waxman. We should be in his face now.
DCCC offices: (202) 863-1500
Emanuel’s DC Office (if you keep it to House committee chairmanship issues it’s legal for them): 202-225-4061
And call your blue reps for Murtha. Hoyer is Rahm’s boy.
OK..funs over..It’s time for Blue America ‘08
We won an important battle last night. Cannot be overstated. But we cannot get complacent. As Jerome and Markos say clearly in “Crashing the Gate”, this is civil war in the Democratic Party, and we must press for full victory there in order to take back our country. The Constitution needs us.
Kos has a great post about how Burns and Allen don’t believe in recounts.

Say G’night Gracie!
I think the next big change we will see is on msm news. Tweety and his friends looked so 2004. KO was perfect. He is waiting. His time is coming and teety knows it. BTW, how many facelifts has Mrs. Greenspan had?
Rahm Emanuel: a dizzy ballerino.
“San Fran Nan” is already being replaced with “Grandma Pelosi”, and Murtha’s running for majority leader. And I haven’t even had my coffee yet.
I don’t think Rahm “Who?” Emanuel is going to get much credit for this election. CNN was already giving props to Howard Dean last night. The spin machine is completely out of whack this morning. :)
When Murtha says Redeploy !
Dems take governorships, state legislatures, the House and the Senate.
Redeployment takes on a new and iridescent meaning.
Thank you John Murtha.
(cognitorex)
DrSinker @ 6
No, it is Civil War. Rahm is not going to unilaterally disarm. We must press for renewal in the Dem party. Think Goldwater in 64.
Rahm works for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He is answerable to the Democratic members of the House, and no one else.
I wonder how he’s going to welcome McNerney and the other new Dems to town. No, I know that: with a big smile and arms wide open, saying “Hey, we’re on the same side.”
What I really wonder is how McNerney and the freshmen are going to welcome Rahm. If you want to hold him accountable, this is the group to do it!
Howie, I know this is asking a lot, but with an Excel spreadsheet it should be possible to provide some more extensive data.
How many of Rahm’s candidates won and how many lost?
How many of Howie’s candidates won and how many lost?
I can live with Murtha as majority leader. Don’t necessarily agree with him on everything, but they guy is honorable and not a corporate whore.
The “liberal” Pelosi and the conservative Murtha strike a nice balance.
DrSinker: “Quite poor”? Hey, thanks. What a compliment!

Jane, did you get ANY sleep last night?
From deep in the San Joaquin County portion of CA-11, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, Howie. I still am floating on air this morning. You shined a huge and glowing light on our district and mobilized thousands of people to help us out. We did it!!!
One thing that was amazing with the actual results here . . . McNerney won handily in all the counties except for San Joaquin. However, Pombo won San Joaquin County by only50.8% to 49.2% For our county [very red] that is a huge upset. Woo Hoo!
Off topic, but possibly important: I saw this on HuffPo, which provided a link to ThinkProgress, which is reporting this:
Please stay tuned…
It’s amazing how well Act Blue’s candidates did overall. Yeah!
Even some of the candidates who didn’t or won’t win were CLOSE.
Y’all are setting some serious groundwork for 2008. I love having my money/efforts go directly to the promising candidates and not through a big national machine (ala DNC or DCCC).
Thanks – so much – Howie and everyone.
Congrats, Howie. I remember only a short while ago it was hard to believe Jerry McNerney could beat Pombo.
P.S.
“Carol Shea-Porter, Bruce Braley, John Hall, Kirsten Gillibrand, Chris Murphy, Dave Loebsack, Mike Arcuri, Chris Carney, Joe Sestak, Patrick Murphy, Ed Perlmutter, Tim Walz, John Yarmuth, Gabby Giffords!!!”
De-lurking to say thanks for everything you’ve done in the last year to get the country back on the tracks, Howie (and Jane, Christy, Pach, and the rest of you).

Yawn. Is anyone falling for this? That line always means he’s giving a canned stump speech.
What about Mr. Dean and the grassroots effort the DNC has made? Do you think that contributed as well?

So what happened? Is anyone finding anything via Google?

If Dubya wants to get Joe for SecDef, there’s a little thing called a “confirmation hearing” that has to happen before Joe would move to the Pentagon. Do you really think that Dubya wants his whole Iraq policy dragged out and questioned in a confirmation hearing?
Maybe later in 2007, but not next week.
There might be less animosity towards the likes of Rahm and Ellen Tauscher if they could at least have waited until after the election to start their dog in the manger act.

There were a lot of solid folks that paved the way for this nigh and day election.
Our dear friends Joe and Val Wilson.
Bush cabinet member Paul O’Neill, one of the few bold insiders to speak out about the Bush train wreck..even though he was quickly shut down.
Of course Ned Lamont.
Dr. Howard Dean, our spiritual leader with cast iron nuggets.
Grandma Nancy who withstood an 11th smear campaign.
Bill Clinton for rallying the troops at the very right moment.
Keith Olbermann, a man who’s time has come.
The netroots with a hat tip to Jane and Christy –so full of wit and verve and some well placed piss and vinegar.
Michael J. Fox for his passion and humanity.
Jack Murtha who knew when to say enough.
The generals who backed up Jack.
Wes Clark and John Edwards for being great friends and campaigners.
Not to mention the other side.
Rove for getting out the evangelical vote that bailed by 30% in favor of Dems.
Rush Limbaugh for showing how lonely and ugly the one party elites had become.

This is my wish, dream, fantasy. Once the playahs know the Senate is a done deal, moderate Repubs get persuaded to walk across the aisle and then they kick that backstabbing megalomaniac Droopy Dog to the curb and strip him of all committee assignments. Also, that the criminal charges on the petty cash fund go forward.
The traditional politician who deserves credit for last night is Howard Dean.

I’ve got lots of good ideas for research if such a spreadsheet exists. (Incidentally, I submit that the ROI should be calculated by marginal D/(D plus R) vote percentage wrt the 2004 election, adjusted for incumbency status.) I’d happily volunteer to report back in a few days if someone sent it to me. Email addy andyfoland at the place where mail is hot…
Don’t get the joke about Rahm and the ballet…
BobbyG @ 61
Maybe both. I doubt that Dubya’s fuse is very long today, so it could easily start with the latter and turn into the former. Who knows, maybe today he’ll give us the long-awaited public meltdown. That would be some nice gravy on our electoral potatoes.
The most likely scenario for Bush’s presser today is that he will say the country wants change and he wants change. He will say he looks forward to working with Democrats (as long as they do what he wants and take responsibility for his failures).
Congratulations to everyone for everything leading up to the elections and the moment by moment coverage of them. It was far better than anything I saw on the media. Thanks again.

The 50 state strategy should also not be forgotten. Forcing the Repubs to spend money in every state – even the deeply red ones – reduced the financing they had available during the last week for voter intimidation (oops I meant GOTV) in close races across the country. Plus, who knows where the next GOP scandal will occur, having a competitive net roots candidate already in place made a difference in some races where the (R) campaign imploded as well.

For this reason, as much as I may personally loathe Ford as a candidate, he really took one for the team. GOP money and effort went to TN that might have found them a few hundred or a few thousand votes in VA.

Thank you so much for everything you did to help get funding to the fantastic roster of candidates who had largely been overlook by Rahm and Chuck.
I’m so glad that Dr. Wulsin is still in the running. And it looks like Courtney may squeek by with a less than 200 vote lead.
I posted the comment below on a previous thread but wanted to bring in forward since it pertains to Ned.
****
Can I say how much I despise Rahm and Chuck?? Their spin is all over the news today – the moderates have won, the crazy liberals are dead.
First of all – it explains loud and clear why “the party” allowed a party incumbent to disregard a party primary and run against the rightful candidate.
It also explains why the Dems not only did not help Lamont – they did what they could to sabotage him. The power elite was clearly determined to nip this grassroots thing in the bud. (Even the Lieberman supporters were impressed by the grassroots efforts that propelled Lamont forward)
Now we have an Unaffiliated Senator who was chiefly elected by Republicans and financed by Republicans. Could you explain to me why that’s better than electing a solid Dem as Senator with passionate, democratic grassroots support? Way to go.
Secondly – Ned Lamont – who you sabotaged, was a fundraising Dem moderate. Again, way to go, Chuck and Harry and everyone who left him to twist in the wind. I doubt Lamont will be compelled to fundraise for the Dem party any time soon (at least I wouldn’t if I were him). Way to alienate not only your activist base, but the moderate, moneyraising part of the party apparatus, as well. It’s a two-fer
Rahm, Chuck, Hill, Bill – you marginalize and piss off the activist base at your peril. I don’t think there are many FDLers or frequenters of other liberal blogs who are going to give you folks the time of day – much less give money or lift a finger to help the Dem party in any way – if you continue to insult and dump on us.
Unfriggin believable.
Thanks, Howie – for your all of your work! We owe you a lot!

cloud7 @ 75
Yes, indeed. They’re also going to be bitching about the fact that Frist made them spend money in Tennessee.
Echoing the praise, here, Howie. Take a bow.
BTW, in OH-2, Wulsin is behind by about 2,400 but the news here is that there are well over 10,000 provisional and another 1,300 absentee ballots to count in Hamilton County alone. hamilton County is Wulsin’s home that she (incredibly) won and some of those votes will go to OH-1, where Chabot eked out a victory, and 3,000 more are in very conservative Warren County but no one knows how many are spread out among the other five counties, four of which went for Wulsin.
Because of the new ID law here, the speculation is that the provisionals will lean heavily toward Wulsin, because the main reasons for provisional ballots were recent moves (which tend to happen among lower income renters) and highly motivated voters willing to put up with some hassle (including me and Mrs. frogger, so there are two votes there). The late absentees will come from college kids (such as my niece) and military. In other words, it is way early to call this one: we’ve probably got another several weeks.
But IF this race somehow comes up Wulsin and goes Democratic FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE WATERGATE it will absolutely be because of the love given by ACT BLUE. Just the fun of a close race has been worth my contribution.
So, thanks again!
Will Baker be offered Sec Def.?

Don’t think you need the tin foil. This is the scenario we were warning folks about. What a perfect way to try to mess up a Dem majority in the Senate.
I think the people of CT who just voted for Joe are going to be pretty ticked off.
Can we call a special election?
Rumsfeld resigns!
CNN says Rumsfield is going!!!
Peolsi is slaying the Ringwrath King!!! I AM NO MAN!!!! argggghhh!!
windje @ 116
I don’t think so. They’re not the types to haul their asses back to DC at this point, and it would look REALLY bad.
Bush new flash – he is going to bomb Iran and dares the dems to stop him. They won’t, because many of them have spoken about how dangerous Iran is. He is going to dare them.
Whoa… And the hits just keep on coming!
What a way to start the day. Montana in the bag and Rumsfeld in the can.
Morning everyone!
Rumsfeld can be subpoened and since he is now a civilian can’t use Executive Privilege as a reason not to answer questions. Am I correct in this?
Eureka Springs,AR @ 120
Robert Gates! ; )
Howie ,
thank you thank you thank you from deep in the heart of Texas !
as this song kicked off the last great progressive wave, I dedicate it to you

what a patriot ! thanks !
Robert Gates will replace Rummy…..
HUH?
Robert Gates?
Odds on TGJoe being offered the SecDef job, so that Jodi Rell gets to nominate a GOP successor and tie up the Senate?
If that happens, I want pitchforks and torches in Hartford and New Haven.
What happens in CT if Lieberwhatever takes Rummy’s spot?
Seriously – special election?
Anyone know the protocol?
dab @ 124
Nope. We can just sit back and say, “Told you so.” Actually, we just need to sit back. Even the most dense Lieberman supporters will be able to figure this one out all by themselves.
Saying Gates may be at the press conference with the chimp….
Another plan by Rover….they are so obvious!
You can hear someone singing hey hey good bye on MSNBC
This Robert Gates? Preznit of Texas A&M?
By any objective standard this election was actually a setback for Democrats and voters are to blame.

right. if we say nothing, then it’s CW by the time the sunday talkies come around. Rahm gets no credit, because he fucked up. If he had done the right thing this morning, come out and admitted that he and his strategy were a total washout and that Dean and Bowers were right all along, then we could talk about how to work together.
Instead, the knives are out now. I think this colossal failure of judgment and leadership should end his career.
Never underestimate the power of megaphones near a press conference
We’re about to move towards an activist nation, but your megaphones now;)
Henny penny the sky is falling! :)

DO NOT FEED.
Chimpy is on
Goddamned Lieberman! I will be absolutely surprised if he doesn’t bolt and take the SecDef position and Rell appoints a GOPer to his seat. THIS may be a Rove “November Surprise” as a contingency operation to losing the Senate.
Love the expression on Bush’s face.
Professor Foland @ 76
Don’t matter- we won VA anyhow.

beeyootiful and next headline, please:
Bush/Cheney Cabal Impeached!
Sorry if it’s here above, but Rumsfeld resigns.
Bastard Bush: “The Democrat (sic) Party had a good night last night.”
If Lieberman needs to be replaced, the governor appoints a replacement, and the seat is run again the next time there is a Senate election — 2008. That’s what happened in NJ when Corzine became governor — Menedez, who replaced him, had to run this time.
Frank Probst @ 144
Awww.. f**k me. I knew it!
wha ? what ? what? what ? – did that murderous imbecile just use the words I am responsible ?!?!?!
it’s a world gone mad
Chimpy is trying to make jokes about Pelosi’s decorating…IDIOT!
He looks like he has a hangover
Flubbed the drape line. He hates his jobs now. he he
Don’t let Rummy out of the country. he has some ’splainin to do.
If Lieberman bolts to the SecDef position, thus handing his seat to a GOPer appointed by Rell, then Rahm, Schumer, Hillary, Reid, and the lot of them will be at fault. Instead of backing a winner (Ned) they will have backed a Trojan Horse that loses them the senate. IF Lieberman bolts it is on THEIR head. They will deserve no small amount of ire for that.
cbl @ 163
Don’t worry. He didn’t mean “responsible” in the way you or I would use the word.
his drape joke fell flat– the press corpse is not laffing.

God please don’t let Lieberman bolt to Rummy’s position. God PLEASE don’t let him bolt.
I’m an atheist but for this I will pray.
From the wiki article on Gates
Gates said in a 2005 discussion with the university’s Academy for Future International Leaders that he had tentatively decided to accept the DNI position out of a sense of duty and had written an email that would be sent to students during the press conference to announce his decision, explaining that he was leaving to serve the U.S. once again. Gates, however, took the weekend to consider what his final decision should be, and ultimately decided that he was unwilling to return to Washington, D.C. in any capacity simply because he “had nothing to look forward to in D.C. and plenty to look forward to at A&M.”
Guess he changed his mind.
a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Rumsfeld to step down
12:53 ET, Wed 8 Nov 2006
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, the face of U.S. war policy and a lightning rod for critics worldwide, will step down, a U.S. defense official said on Wednesday.
The imminent announcement by President Bush follows dramatic victories by Democrats in Tuesday elections fueled by public anger over the Iraq war in which Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives and were close to taking the Senate.
Bold mine.
http://today.reuters.com/news/…..fresh=true
Chimpy said he and Rummy agreed it is time for new leadership…now telling us how great Rummy is, a patriot…..He left out war criminal and crook.
If Joe is given the nod as Rummy’s replacement, we need to immediately pressure Gov. Rell to appoint Ned as Senator, not only because he was the REAL Democrat in the race, but because he was the runner-up.
Oh, and Bush is talking now, saying it’s time to “put the elections behind us,” and bloviating about “bipartisanship.” Right. Up yours, Chimpy.
Man, he sounds ANGRY. It’s especially apparent if you listen without the video. He’s spitting his words out, and can barely bring himself to say the names of the Dems.
He just made Rummy’s resignation official, and sounds even angrier, hammering the ends of his sentences like they were nails into wood.
Bob GAtes is SecDef! We keep the Senate!
gack…”Don Rumsfeld has been a superb leader in a time of change”
unless someone has some IM’s, Gates is gonna be next SecDef – This gives Dems a chance to look all cooperative and shit
They will deserve no small amount of ire for that.

anyone want to take bets on who gets (and accepts) the nomination for SecDef? b/c I’m going with Lieberman. The Droopy Douche.
I’d be sort of interested to know the details of whatever deal Mr. Droopy Douche struck w/ Rove et al.
Bush says, “To our enemies: Do not be joyful.”
What a craven little fucker.
“To our enemies, do not be joyful” — what? Because the Democrats won? This man is an ass beyond compare.

still…i hope you guys are thinking of ways to dole out some payback. i like to think of the blogs as the enforcers, esp since the MSM (lame acronym…) seems to have abdicated that responsibility.
A few comments from Illinois.
Did everyone notice that Illinois didn’t ride the anti-GOP wave? Many opportunities for Democratic wins were blown. It’s not only Rahm’s fault. There is no Democratic organization in Illinois except for the grassroots. The DNC and Dean really have a 49 State strategy because Illinois Democrats won’t play.
If there was a real Democratic party in Illinois there might have been more D victories. Look at IL 10, 11, 14, and 15. Anyone of those besides 6 could have turned out differently.
Rahm and other Illinois Congressional Democratic leaders need to step up and pressure the parochial Illinois Democrats to get with the program.
Don’t forget that JOEMOE has a press appearance coming up. Bush is said to be naming him to a new post – Minister of Religious Outreach.
He doesn’t sound like a man who wants to cooperate with anyone at this point. He looks like a man who would like to run the Dems over with his limosine.
If he isn’t drinking now, he will be after today now that it’s all starting to come apart for him and his cabal.
Margot…don’t waste a good TV on such an idiot.
New direction in Iraq? I want troops to come home with VICTORY. So they will stay.

Holy crap. We dominate the US House, we’ve taken the US Senate, record gains in Governors, and major gains in state house and senate races.
Top it off with a Rumsfeld resignation.
Wow. I mean, wow.
I love whiny unitary decider’s explanation of why he said “Rumsfeld will stay on until the end of my term” last week, and he accepted the resignation today. He didn’t want to play politics with it. Heh.
I loved his response, “I thought we were gonna do fine yesterday. Shows what I know.” Oh, we already knew what you know… hence the election results.
“I thought we would be fine yesterday…shows what I know”
Indeed.
um, seriously, what’s the plan if lieberman resigns his seat, giving it to the republicans?
i mean…
jesus.
seems like that would be a reason to unleash hell or whatever. or at least it would feel really good to do so. or are people tired of lieberman?
Rumsfeld can now spend the rest of his miserable life visiting all 2800 headstones and apologise. He can then visit the fathers/mothers, husbands/wives and boy/girl friends and explain why their loved ones are not at the dinner table.
His next job should be directing traffic in Bhagdad wearing the standard issue protective vest.
He’s getting hoarse and more and more agitated.
Oh, God, he’s going to have a meltdown. On national television. Bloviating about “changing tactics.” Give me a break. And now he’s getting called on his “Democrats win, America loses” hypocrisy. The press smells blood. They’re calling him on everything he’s now flip-flopping on.
Please, PLEASE let him lose it on national television.
Are you listening to Cheney or the voters on Iraq?
Bush: Well, there was also the corruption. (I kid you not.) “While we are adjusting we will continue to adjust.”
Not that it matters, but was Rummy “invited” to resign? One might think so after Shrub’s ringing endorsement last week.
Nate @ 227
I’m loving it, actually. Maybe it’s a function of my age (53), but I’m bubbling with joy over the first woman Speaker of the House, especially since I like her politics.

And Webb may win outside of the margin of the automatic recount (though we probably won’t know for a week or so).
The Unitary Decider is blathering on and it appears he realizes that he’s lamer than any duck that’s quacked before.
Oh, and the sun is shining and people believe in Democracy in America again.
Hugh @ 229
Maybe we should all call and email the White House and let the idiot know he lost.
If Rahm thinks the Republicans are so good a model, how about he joins them and moves them toward the center? They need to move more than the Dems do. (And please take JoeL and Hillary with you when you go!)
dude, i heard the bleep too…
angie @ 241
Ya I wonder why we would think he was for staying the course- maybe because he said it 28 times in 3 years in his what, 50 public appearances? if that
I think the bleep was a mistake
definitely a bleep
lurkette @ 233
Why on earth would Lieberman do that? He has an easy, secure and well-paid job, plus he’s going to have people from both sides of the aisle giving him BJs left and right for votes. He isn’t going anywhere.
Chimpy working towards an anger meltdown….
LMAO
Gates was involved in Iran-Contra. Don’t remember the details.
He could be rejected, but then it might be Lieberman. Shrewd move; he’ll get in, I predict, to protect the Dem control of the Senate.
Now he’s insulting a reporter.
The guy is really showing his stripes today, and they’re ugly, ugly, ugly. The mask is off. This is the guy a clueless electorate anointed our “national hero.”

I hope Allen doesn’t drag this whole thing out for weeks.
Rumsfeld resigns? If HoJoe steps in to take his place . . . It gives me a headache to think about it. I am ashamed of CT for enabling this monstrous creep.
Bush babbling. Bush just got through saying that he does nothing but adjust but now says that he wouldn’t adjust for politics, as if.
On Pelosi, “I knew you would start trying to get me negotiating with myself.”
On bipartisanship, no specifics.
CNN just called it for Tester!
He needs a drink.
Howie – You are my oxygen today.
Your fearless truth-speaking is blazing the trail ahead for the rest of us. Yesterday’s results just got us across the threshold into the theater of debate. The work to really make a difference still lies ahead, and it is in the hands of many who have no interest in hard work, now or later [Harry Reid, Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Mark Pryor, Joseph Lieberman, etc.]. But with you by our side, we will actually effect a course change, sooner or later, despite the indifference of half this country’s residents (who leave “politics” solely to the politicians and then pat themselves on the back for their uninformed failure to participate in their own representative democracy).
Christy — excellent posts this morning. Don’t know how you did it, on a couple hours sleep after the chaotic night on television. You have been consistently on the mark leading up to, and through, this election. To both of you, to Jane, to all the passionate commenters and self-informed Americans here, and to Ned Lamont:
THANK you.

Richmond @ 219
In IL, the Dems are more of a Chicago party with a downstate auxiliary, as opposed to a statewide party, especially since the death of Paul Simon. If you want this to change, talk to Dick Durbin about it. He’s got connections around the state, but he’s going to need a lot of support from the roots to get the Chicago-based folks to sit up and take notice.
I didn’t think it possible, but Bush is plumbing new depths of cynicism.
“The cumative effect, it was a thumpin’…”
it’s a thumping!
BTW – I don’t mean to push about SD, only that I KNOW you’ll have something insightful – as you always do on choice issues. Of course when you get time and rested. I can’t wait.
Did Bush ask Rummy for the medal back?
“This was a close election, if you look at race by race it was close”

Bush just announced Rumsfeld is out. Bob Gates is in.
CNN is late to the party (after NBC and ABC and AP), but they just called MT for Tester.
He just said this wasn’t his “first rodeo”! (He knows people “express” themselves during a campaign). Could he please stop yelling? And telling people that the election was “close” but the total effect was a “thumping.” yeah, like a mountain falling on your head.

Exactly! Pelosi and a few other leaders can go on acting mature and statesmanlike, but we need any Democratic partisan pointing out that Bush has just proved their point that the only way to get him to change anything was to put an opposition in power. I mean, firing Rumsfeld the day after the election, and turning his promise that Rummy was staying the course into a lie — how much clearer a sign could you ask for?

Hi, angie!!!
Bush wants to harkin back to Truman and Eisenhower now. He worries about our future presidents. OY!
kristinejoy @ 242
A mistake I think, given the context.
Greg – The claim of exec privilege still exists – it doesn’t go away once someone becomes a civilian.
And being a civilian v. being a cabinet member isn’t the issue. Congress can subpoena anyone, it’s whether the Preznit will claim executive privilege and the SC agrees with that claim. The SC has decided that executive privilege does exist, but THIS preznit claims even more than the SC has already said exists, and the SC will have the final word on what the scope of exec privilege is.

LandOfTheFree @ 243
Just to be clear, there is no automatic recount in Virginia; a recount only happens if a candidate requests it. I think the boundary you’re referring to is the one percent level, which is the margin below which a candidate is allowed to request a recount. (And if it’s not less than .5 percent and he still loses, he has to pay the costs of the recount.) Just wanted us all to be clear.
new thread
Wasn’t Bill Gates the one who was a hold-over from the Ford administration who stole the Carter debate book and gave it to Reagan’s people?
That kind of treachery, lyin’ and thievery is very popular among Republicans and the Bush people in particular. He’ll fit in well with Dubya.
So, it’s all down to Virginia. A lot of senior Republicans lost last night: Chafee (R-RI), Burns (R-MT), Weldon (R-PA), Shaw (R-FL), Johnson (R-NY), Leach (R-IA), Pombo (R-CA) and perhaps some others. This is indeed a very good victory.
Still, I can’t help but think that the Ohio congressional races should’ve gone more Blue along with the senate seat and governor’s seat. I hope Wulsin pulls it out against Schmidt.
I’m still amazed at the house race in Wyoming. Cubin is like a 65 IQ and her opponent (whose name I always forget, Grauner maybe) is terrific. Why is it favoring Cubin? I don’t get it. Time for a recount.
Also, Arizona was particularly nasty this year and there could be need for a recount in the Wilson-Madrid race.
A 25 seat gain is nice and taking control is great, but winning every seat possible so it’s less expensive and difficult 2 years from now should be enough impetus for us to keep our eyes on those 50-50 races still being tallied.
Nice win everybody. Woo hoo!
Ahhh. I’m looking at our physical and political weather, and thinking of the closing lyrics of Midnight Oil’s Blue Sky Mine that I was listening to while getting ready on Monday:
Yes.
DrSinker @

Yes indeedy. Wonder why Mr. Emmanuel didn’t plump for showing him the door when he refused to abide by the primary results.
DrSinker, got here late, but it is not animosity it is HATRED
I’ll give you an idea of what sort of candidates Blue America and Howie picked to back. Nine days before the election, I put in $150 spread over, what, thirty candidates. They all got about five bucks.
The day before the election, I got a signed thank-you note from Kirsten Gillibrand. (!)
Beyond that, what would this country look like if that five bucks helped win entry for her and others into public campaign funding like the Maine or AZ laws?
A whole lot different, and in a way that, I think, Rahm Emanuel (who’s been out chasing money from the predatory lending crowd) would not find to his liking….
“To our enemies, do not be joyful.”
No, no, we wouldn’t do that!
We simply earned political capital in the campaign, and now we intend to spend it. :)
Does Rummy get away without appearing before Dem led committees looking into Iraq?
Rummy will recieve summons.
This Gates fellow is self made from entry in Agency to its director. He must have been there when 41 was there, wonder how his career when when 41 got in there.
Howie, thanks for Jerry McNerney, Joe Sestak, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Chris Carney. But thanks also for Chuck Pennacchio, Donna Edwards, Chiro Rodriguez, Christine Cegelis, and all the other Blue America candidates who were good people who were able to get their message out partly thanks to your efforts, but lost for one reason or another. They’re the other part of this story. If you look at them, there are quite a few who didn’t make it past the primaries. We need to remember that in each campaign there will be good candidates who lose, but that should never stop us, or them, from trying.
So thanks to all the Blue America candidates.
Man, I don’t know how you guys are doing it, but THIS BLOG IS ON FIRE!
All hail Howie, who did a hell of job! You’ve been a must-read on the “internets” throughout this election. Everyone at FDL: thanks so much for your dedication and hard work!
Now the fight to get recognition and credit for the progressives begins. Rahm is very good at spinning the traditional media (can you believe those morons still care what DeLay thinks?!?!) so it will be important for the progressives to keep together with a very clear and well-communicated message. I notice Dr. Dean stayed off the stage last night. I hope that means he was already strategizing as to how we can keep the public from swallowing the meme that “conservative Democrats” won the day.
Bless ya’ Howie
Seriously – God bless ya for what you’ve done.
I just wanted to say a huge ‘WELL DONE’ to everyone who manned a phone, spoke up and out, worked so hard to get enough of the facts out that we could really have a voice this election…GREAT JOB! and THANK-YOU!.
What was done is HUGE!!!!!
We Have control of the House.
We have effectively tied Bush’s hands.
There are enough Re-pubs who would vote with us on many things.
Even if ALLEN and Crist win, they are facing enough serious legal fall-out from various scandals, that they will not be an issue.
The Republicans know ‘We the People’ are not happy with their performance.
The Democrats know that this result is less about their ideas for change than a complete repudiation of Bush and Co, so they all know that we will be paying far more attention to their actions now that they have been given this opportunity to walk the walk…
So, Everyone take a breath, a bow and enjoy the moment…
Tomorrow we can continue the push for Impeachment, Investigation of ALL of Mr Bush and Co’s connections/actions re; 9/11, Iraq e.t.c. and watch as they all spin and try and find lawyers etc :)
WhooHoooo…
Pass the popcorn!!!!
Again WELL DONE and THANK-YOU ALL!!!
Jackie..
Hope I’m not butting in. Just adding agreement from 10,000 miles away. This campaign was the inspiration for everything as far as I can see. No praise too high for all involved.
Also. Haere mae, America. You did it! You did it! You did it! Good on yer.

as a lowly grassroots volunteer, the grassroots was SO MUCH better than ever before. in the past i’ve volunteered DESPITE the people supervising me. in my previous experience, grassroots volunteering was often an exercise in the delirious expression of power by whomever was ‘in charge’.
THIS time it was actually pleasant to be a volunteer. i’m going to do a lot more grassroots work and i’m going to encourage my friends. Before my experience with this election cycle i never wanted to get my friends involved for fear of turning them off to political volunteering altogether.
i gather a lot of this is the good work of Mr. Dean. Odds are he won’t see this posting of mine, but i’m SO SORRY I DIDN’T SUPPORT HIM AND WORK FOR HIS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN.
Sir i was wrong. Good job and congrats to all of you who did the heavy lifting from this obscure suburbanite who worked the fones in Phoenix!!!!
Re the original article on Rahm:
Just listened to Al Franken. He had on Tom Hamburger of the LA Times and author of One Party Country: The Republican Plan for Dominance in the 21st Century. [Sales sure to go up after yesterday’s results.]
“Hamburger” mouthed what to me will be the Dem DC Insiders’ take: that Dems can credit all the wins to Rahm because he “forced them to run candidates who are from the middle [rather than the progressives they’d like to run”].
Just my prognostication that we’ll be seeing this in the days to come. Hope my ability to predict the future is better than Hamburger’s.
Huge “Thank you” Howie, et al. You Rock!

John Kerry belongs on this list too
I know he lost some popularity with many after the right-wing echo chamber. He is going to go back to the Senate with all the Liebermann toads gunning for him.
Paul Hodes — A real old time liberal and Carol Shea-Porter –A real modern era progressive ousted Republican Bass and Bradley to make NH a largely blue state.
Democrats also took control of less glamorous local level offices like the governor’s council—these are the people that are in a position to watch precinct level politics and vote counting. Kerry worked tirelessly for these people.
So anyway he got horrible treatment in the MSM these past couple weeks but he still yeoman work to get Dems elected
Great Work Howie,
I only noticed your byline the other night when you made your election predictions. Your expertise was obvious. Your predictions were spot on with the exception of Lamont where I thought you were overly optimistic.
I look forward to reading your work going forward.
Thanks.
