Webb declares victory in advance of the recount. Well done. He won, as I expect final review will confirm.
Meanwhile, I guarantee you Lieberman was rooting for Webb, or for any configuration of final race results that will make him a critical swing vote for control of the Senate. Whether the Republicans need him as a crossover for control or just as an extra vote to make 51, he will leverage his position in a bidding war between the Dems and the White House. Bet on it.
Joe promised during his campaign his seniority would be there for him, and I'm sure it will be, no matter who offers it to him. It's hustler time in Connecticut. Joe will milk a bidding war for time and attention and the best personal deal he can get, because for Joe, it's all about Joe.
I guarantee you one of the first congratulatory calls he got was from Rove tonight, and that Cheney called him, too. On the news, people are talking about Joe as if he is a secure vote for Reid as Leader, but Joe's a cheap street corner rentboy retread waving a yellow hanky now.
It's going to be quite the ghastly show. I hope Harry Reid is into water sports.
On the House side, we're pitching a shutout so far. All holds or pickups. Nyah nyah nyeh nyah nyaaah!

Thanks for the heads up on the new thread! Yeah Webb declaring is a good thing…
Lieberloser is disgusting, but I’m going to worry about him later. Right now I’m watching these last three Senate seats. It’s an amazing night.
This is the best night since Nov. 7th, 2000!
Webb!

Yeah, Webb claims victory in advance of the recount. Of course he does. Until there is a recount, he is the presumptive winner.
But CNN probably refuses to call a winner who has won the “winner”?
Considering that there are 99.47% reporting last time I looked, when it gets to 100%, will CNN call it?
Actually, I can imagine them delaying until the provisional ballots are counted. But not until the recount, surely. They wouldn’t stoop that low . . . . would they?
Where is Aquaria? Need his/her thoughts…. still pacing?
testaroo @ 14
Yes, but the votes that are still out are going to skew Democratic. And those provisional ballots? I’ll bet you most of those are from people who were trying to vote while black.
Is anyone else falling asleep on the keyboard but too excited to turn off the computer and tv and just go to bed?

No, cause George’s brother said he won. Woo! Bummer of a flashback.
The only way for RGJoe to prove his principled bipartisanship is to keep his word to his party. If he decides to make Cheney’s job easier by changing parties and becoming a GOPer, everyone will know the blogosphere is right: RGJoe has no moral center.
The only way for “the last honest man” to maintain his integrity and bi-partisanship is to caucus with the Democrats. Otherwise, we’d all know that GOP money that got him re-elected was the price to pay for him changing parties.

What? No ATOMIC WEDGIE?!!!
Concerning my US Senate scenario, here would be the Republican game plan:
Challenge not only Webb’s victory, but also the victories in other “close” states: Missouri? maybe some other one.
Just enough to keep a Republican majority for the purpose of organizing the Senate in early January.
Billmon said it well on Oct. 25:
http://billmon.org/archives/002880.html
(Thanks, whoever pointed to billmon’s article in the last thread; don’t want to go back and look.)
Meanwhile, do existing Senators get to keep their seats until replaced. No. Although the U.S. Senate is, unlike the House, a “continuing body,” a Senator keeps his or her seat until the 6-year term is up, and no longer. The seat itself is not a “continuing seat,” so to speak.
(I don’t have citations here, so hope I haven’t got something a bit wrong here.)
Did McCain say, “We Republicans blew Iraq” or “We [Americans] blew Iraq” or “They [Bush/Cheney] blew Iraq”?

Dear Senator Lieberman:
I am an out-of-state supporter of the Democratic candidate you defeated yesterday. I hope you will organize with the Democrats, as you promised us and them in your campaign. It would dishearten me to know you had again misled your consituents and party members for your own benefit. I will look forward to your bipartisan solutions to serious problems that face our country. I am especially hopeful that you have an inside track with the now-minority West Wing which might enable peace with honor.
Please be sure not to fulfill the expectations of those whose dollars you took while proclaiming your independence and bipartisanship. You have an opportunity to lead by example, and Democrats across the country are looking to you for hope.

Lieberman will *never* switch. He’d lose the ability to keep squeezing Reid’s balls if he did. A threat loses its effectiveness once it’s actually used, and once Joe switches, he’s just another Republican. (And he’s not gonna trade 6 years of getting his salad tossed by the Dems for 2 years as SoD.)
OTOH, I’ll bet Joe had to give up something to get Reid, Schumer and Clinton to sell out Lamont.
So it’s just one big wet, happy Democratic daisy chain.
Hard to believe that winning the House and possibly the Senate would leave me feeling so…used.

Oh thank God, it’s time for The Daily Show/Colbert Report on the West Coast! Let it’s cleansing waters clean me of the sink of cable pundantry…

I think it’s among the more liberal Montana towns…..I know a bunch of liberal east coasters who moved to Bozeman.
Joe Lieberman was my roommate at Yale. I liked him then and I’ve supported him since (he was actually a good environmental AG in Connecticut before he became a Senator). But his support for an attack on Saddam (before 9/11) and his calculated cheerleading for Bush and the bloody, expensive, and totally unnecessary War on Iraq made me sick to my stomach.
I’m sorry for our country that he won (based on bonhomie rather than character), because I fear that he will use his position as Senator to leverage his own personal power. I wouldn’t put it past him to accept Rumfeld’s position as Secretary of Defense and then allow CT. Governor Jodi Rell to appoint a real Republican in his place.
His “centrism” doesn’t surprise me. He was always a “Scoop” Jackson Democrat more than a JFK Democrat. It’s the outright hypocrisy and the unconscionable political thuggery that’s really disturbing. The Joe I knew at Yale wouldn’t have resorted to the smear-and-slime that the present-day Lieberman considers his bread-and-butter.
He may have won his seat, but I think he’s lost his soul in the process.

Yep! Recently Mayor of Oakland…
Information on legislation, Senate rules, etc., regarding seating new Senators:
And then there are some Standing Rules of the US Senate, including:
All this from Senate Election Law – A Guidebook, on the US Senate web site.
Of course I didn’t get to the part about challenging or deciding who is to be seated.
I’m going to bed.
MayDaze @ 217
yes, more recently the (mostly) failed mayor of Oakland
I think Ned did an admirable job and did shape the national discussion. It’s bad enough for Joe to forsake those values he claims he was promoting, but the names that got on his bandwagon that also should have heeded the primary voter’s will also deserve a big “Thanks a bunch, guys and gal. Heckuva job!
Did Joe ever cop to where his big chunk of petty cash came to and went? Why wasn’t this investigated in a timely fashion? Oh yeah, that’s right. I forgot. It’s not a crime when reThugs (or their wannabes) do it or don’t get caught till after it matters…like robo-calling. Wasn’t it by crew connected with the GoPuke operatives that got jailed for a previous vote suppression phone scam? Why is Bev Harris of Black Box Voting the only one that seems to be interested in the hackable nature of the electronic voting machines…oh yeah…that’s right…
Anyway, I’m grateful to you and all who worked so hard to achieve the victory that has been anything but a “sure thing”. You should all be proud whether volunteers, those donating money, or helped work or drive people to the polls (I thanked my poll people – lots of smiles!! and drove a co-worker who was gonna skip it). I agree with Andrew Sullivan in that this wasn’t an election but an intervention. I am really looking for some committee oversight of the preceding corruption of Constitutional law. I hope they don’t let us down (plenty of time to rethink that pursuit of nefarious activity by the shRub misAdmin Speaker Pelosi).

Thank god it’s not Poochigian! I grew up in Fresno. Blech.
I have no clue what’s in Bozeman. I’ve been to a couple of the corners of MT. Man, they’re making this tough to figure out.
Bozeman is one of the bigger towns, though. Make of that what you will.
Cascade Co. (Great Falls) went Dem, and that’s a surprise. A military base is near there, or was, so lots of military/defense types.

Thanks for the insight radlib1.
I worry most about the Lieberman to DOD scenario.
Well, after worrying about Allen cheating somewhere in VA tonight.

It will end up being blamed ON Bush by the repugs, because as a lame duck he is NOW expendable.

We at FDL have all been worried about the Rumsfeld Rell possibilities you raised since Jane posted about the rumors. We tried to Spotlight the rumor to CT media outlets so that they could pin Joe down, before the election, by asking him, but I don’t think it ever was asked.

Mehlman’s a goner. The Foley investigation is going to hit Foley and Kolbe and a number of high level gay staffers. Mehlman’s going become more and more of a liability with their base. And he just lost both houses of Congress.
Good night and it has been a real pleasure spending this evening with you, Lakers.
radlib1 #218,

“lizard brains” seems an apt description for anyone who gave the same answer to every question….
“lizard brians” also seems an apt description for anyone so ignorant of statistics as to conclude a single candidate’s answers somehow represented a national party.
Of course, if I were Rahm and the other pro-corporate DINO’s, I’d be conflating Greens’ missteps (real or DLC-invented) with Rethugs’ success.
This intellectually dishonest rhetorical trick (apologies for repetition) diverts attention away from the DLC’s abject failure, and hence serves the DLC’s corporate owners.
Surely more successful diversions may be contrived.
The DLC sells out a far larger slice of the electorate to corporate interests than the Greens ever gain.
When DLC candidates lose, they divert attention to the Greens.
Neat trick – when it works, it serves the corporations.
Bad news for the DINO’s – good news for people and communities – the trick stopped working.
But the tricks are still working for Shrub and the goopers.
(Jeff Gannon’s replacement is?)
More to come…..so to speak.
WOW.
What a night!!!!
Pa 08? Lois Murphy? I want to keep score on Howie’s Blue Americas.
I don’t want to here any more come together with the Repugs. They are all fucking criminals and I hope Conyers, Waxman et al start the process to send them to the federal pen.
Tweety just said it woud be so much like Joe Lieberman to switch sides
But wait… we still have Rover to kick around!
{And oh the darkblack artistry that it will require… :~}
Had enough Karl?
Wonder how many lawyers have already booked their tickets to VA tonight?
.
Haven’t finished counting votes and already, Brian Williams is slobbering all over Rahm Emanuel for his “great, visionary strategy”. Man, do they go out of their way to get shit wrong??
webb up by 12K!!!!
So Webb is now ahead by either 6,000 or 8,000 votes. How much more does he have to pull out before talk of recount disappears? Jeff Toobin was mumbling something about Virginia definitely having a contested race no matter what and that provisional ballots have to be counted before a winner is declared. But no-one knows how many provisionals there are. This sounds incredibly shady. Incredibly shady.
What the heck?
RossK @ 260
They better be there already. We were supposed to be prepared this time.
Jenny from the Blog @ 263
webb needs 11,000 to make it so Allen has to pay for the recount.
SixStringSlingr @ 260
no they go out of their way to suck up to power.
for ambition whores like Brian and Hillary, power is always right.
Uptown,
so Allen can demand a recount no matter how wide the margin of Webb’s victory? Trying to understand here…
Jenny from the Blog @ 263
6-8K votes isn’t anything close to a 1% lead necessary to take it out of recount range of a multimillion vote race, and the provisional/absentees would have to break almost entirely for one candidate or the other to do the trick. That there will be a recount is about the only thing anyone can be sure of in VA tonight.
Jenny from the Blog @ 267
I believe so
And why haven’t any of the news organizations called it for Webb yet? They called it for Lieberman after 2% of the votes had been counted, fer chrissakes!
Jenny from the Blog @ 266
My understaning is that a recount is automatic and paid for by the state of Va if the margin is under 1%. if it is greater Allen would have to pay for it. 1% of 2 million some votes. It is all in the provos tomorrow.
Dr. Bloor/Uptown -
OK. I get why Allen has the right to contest and pay for a recount, since 12,000 votes is a comparatively small margin, given the population of Virginia. Do you think it’s odd that the MSM isn’t calling it for Webb though?
Webb’s up almost 8,000 now
Jenny from the Blog @ 272
I don’t think they want to look like idiots as they have in the past. The early calls on the CT race, etc., were because they had good numbers to work with and a fairly substantial margin of victory. One of Ned’s pollworkers dropped by earlier and explained how the Lamont camp knew the final results very quickly even while we were stuck with partial reports that made it look like he had a chance.
can’t see Lieberman leaving a 6 year seat for a 2 year gig in a lost war.
Jenny from the Blog @ 272
i think that Allen getting out and making that announcement was smart and forced the MSM’s hand — along with earlier reports of the FBI investigating voter problems
Dr. Bloor, all, thanks. Ack, I’ll just go to sleep and try not to worry. I DON’T TRUST THESE PEOPLE!
;)
‘night.
Uptown Chick –
Good point. I loved seeing Webb tonight, what a guy. Too bad they cut him off — but that 10 seconds was delicious anyway…
half hour for Montana to be called

Sadly, Massa lost. NY-29 Massa (D): 49% Kuhl (R): 51% – 92% counted
Wulsin 49% _ schmidt 51% (but TPM has winner n/a)
Braley 55% – Whaley 43% Braley declared winner
Kissell 49% – Hayes 51% no winner declared though 99% counted

“America has spoken

America has spoken, George Bush told the nation this morning two years ago, and it had given him its trust and his confidence. He would continue his policies at home and abroad, buoyed by the public’s endorsement. Now, two years further on, America has spoken again – but this time in a very different tone and with the opposite conclusion, issuing a direct warning to the leader it re-elected 24 months ago to change his policy in Iraq. The cheering can be heard not just in America itself but around the planet.”………
Goodnight and sweet dreams.
