You tell me: you receive a call telling you that if you show up to vote at your registered polling place, you will be arrested. Feeling intimidated?
I've gotten a spate of wingnut e-mails since yesterday with all the whiny talking points that (a) no voter intimidation is going on in VA and (b) we're just making it up. Oh, really? Then how do you explain multiple recordings like this from Virginia voters? And the fact that the FBI is investigating these claims of voter intimidation already, according to MSNBC? (I don't think I need to point out that trying to cheat people out of their votes is illegal.) And that the reports are coming from all over Virginia, in predominantly Democratic-leaning areas, including a whole lot of dog-whistle planning for calls to a lot of minorities all over Virginia?
I'm sorry, dirty trick may happen every election, but this is really beyond excusing. I don't care what party you support. Calling people and threatening them with arrest if they exercise their right to vote is just wrong. Period. And it's a crime. If whomever is responsible for this gets caught and tried, they can join the GOP phone jamming criminals from the last election in the penitentiary…where they belong. Voting is too important to be treated in this cavalier manner — and it is about time that the GOP cheaters learned that lesson. How many people in the Republican party have to be put in jail before they learn that everyone's vote is important and ought to count?
As if the attempt at robocall irritation wasn't bad enough. Guess when all you have to sell is a bunch of rubber stamp Republican crap…you lie, cheat and generally try to tap dance your way to the finish line.
Had enough? Get up, go vote for Democrats and let's get some accountability. Cast your vote for freedom! (This is must see video, in case you haven't yet seen it. Fantastic stuff for today!)
And if you have trouble voting, try these numbers:
1-888-DEM-VOTE for the DNC's voter hotline — this will get you directly to DNC lawyers and others to help with fraud issues.
Election Protection's 1-866-OUR-VOTE has live operators who can address some problems over the phone and dispatch lawyers on the ground, if necessary.
Common Cause's 1-866-MYVOTE-1 can help people find their polling place.

I just got a call from my mother who (along with Dad) just voted in a minority-majority district in Prince Georges County, Maryland. She’s very upset, something about a bunch of people coming down from Philadelphia spreading incorrect information and trying to convince people they can’t vote. She said that everyone in line stayed put and was angry at the interlopers, discussing how this is even more reason to vote for the Democrats.
I need to call Mom back once she calms down and try to get the full story. I’ll also give her the phone number to report the problem. I think that Mom is particularly upset because she was a poll worker at her voting site from the late 60’s through the early 70’s (Mom’s 80 yrs old) and that she truly can’t believe something so nasty is happening in a nice working class suburb of DC.
Bill Clinton put it incredibly well while campaigning for Webb. This, too, is must see video.
http://www.crooksandliars.com/…..-for-webb/
If these tactics lead to republican victories we need to think about recalling those winners. The material Election Protection is collecting could be used to make the case for a recall to voters.
This kind of behavior should be prosecuted as treason. No joke.
Interfering with the people’s right to elect their representation and you are cutting into the heart of what this country was founded upon.
So this was Karl Rove’s ‘Ace in the Hole’. Spend hundreds of thousands dollars on false flag Robo-Calls to suppress the Democratic Vote.
If it works, when they are found out after the election, they’ll say “Sorry, we thought it was legal”, pay a few fines and laugh all the way back into control of Congress.
Great country, huh?
Democracy has become a bloodsport.
Anti-voter dirty tricks require voter protection legislation and enforcement.
personally, and i said it here first, i won’t accept or believe anything short of a full takeover of the house.
if the republicans somehow “escape” with a majority in both houses…don’t know about the rest of you, but for me, it’s torches and pitchforks time.

On a much lighter note, for FDLers in Dc who need a break later, here’s a handy guide to Capitol Hill Happy Hours from The Hill:
Free tacos, dollar wine, gratis cocktails and more: 6 great Hill happy hours
By Emily Heil
Cheap beer, free food and drink specials aren’t just for interns. The life of a Hill staffer necessitates plenty of after-work outings, the sheer quantity of which makes finding bargains a must. And with lobbyist largesse so pass, what’s a badge-wearing Hill habitu to do?
We’ve hunted down six happy hours in close proximity to Capitol office buildings where bargains abound. But first, a few hints from happy-hour veterans for maximizing the golden hour: arrive early, when crowds are thinnest and the food (if there is any) is most plentiful. And be sure to keep track of when the happy hour ends and order accordingly, so you don’t get hit with a full-price tab because you ordered that last drink five minutes too late.
Capitol Lounge
Political memorabilia lines the walls of this always-packed meeting spot. The backdrop sets the tone for the crowd, which is practically all staffers, all the time. Drinking is the main activity, but food specials fuel the imbibing.
During the 4 p.m.-7 p.m. happy hour, pizza is half price on Monday; Tuesdays are 10-cent wing nights; and tacos are a quarter on Wednesday.
231 Pennsylvania Ave. S.E., 547-2098
Tapatini’s
This hip martini bar, with its groovy lighting and pulsing dance music, offers a refuge for those looking for a break from the usual burger-and-beer Hill dives. And upscale happy hour specials similarly provide a respite from others’ domestic-beer deals.
Tuesday nights, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., check out half-price martinis and two-for-one bottled beers. Wednesday nights are ladies’ nights, with $1 wine glasses and $4 fruity martinis. Top-shelf martinis are $5 on Thursday nights. And although it technically isn’t a happy-hour special, this is one of the best drink deals going on the Hill: At 10 p.m. on Thursdays, Tapatini’s pours free promotional cocktails from a different liquor brand each week.
11 8th St. S.E., 546-8272
Hawk & Dove
This Hill institution is all tradition, with glossy wood bars, a cozy fireplace, and battered wooden chairs.
Old-Washington vibe aside, the biggest reason to make this a stop on the happy-hour circuit can be summed up in those two words that form the holy grail of bargain-hunting: free food. The staff breaks out trays of gratis munchies during the 4 p.m.-to-7 p.m. happy hour. The fare is unsophisticated but satisfying accompaniment to the beer specials. Look for grilled cheese sandwiches on Mondays and hard-shelled tacos on Fridays — and be quick about queing up, since the platters clear off quickly.
Although the free food is the star, the liquid specials are nothing to sniff at. Domestic beer bottles are $1.95 and rail drinks are $2.
329 Pennsylvania Ave. S.E., 543-3300
Union Pub
One of the few Senate-side spots for after-work drinks, this relative newcomer to the Hill scene offers plenty of room for mingling. A large patio is warmed in the cooler months by large heat lamps, extending the outdoor-dining scene well into the fall.
The pub offers nightly specials on name-brand liquors as well as half-price food specials. On Mondays, Captain Morgan drinks, Jagermeister shots, and Sambuca shots are $4, while burgers are half price. Tuesdays feature $4 Absolut drinks and half-price wings. Jose Cuervo drinks and shots are $4 on Wednesdays, while $10 gets you a pitcher of domestic brew and a basket of fries.
201 Massachusetts Ave. N.E., 546-7200
Tunnicliff’s Tavern
This laid-back watering hole across from Eastern Market often attracts a slightly older, neighborhood crowd than other venues on the Hill. There’s a changing lineup of happy-hour specials, but regulars can count on $2 Budweiser drafts Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Fridays, select appetizers are half price.
222 7th St. S.E., 544-5680
Tune Inn
The scene at this Hill institution is pure small-town diner/dive, with stuffed deer parts lending a kooky vibe. The happy-hour specials are about as straightforward as the establishment itself: Monday through Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 7p.m. all domestic bottles are $2 and all rail cocktails are $3.
331 1/2 Pennsylvania Ave. S.E., 543-2725
(Posted earlier, but it bears repeating with slight edits . . .)
Given the expected traffic here today, it’s a good day to be nice to the moderators who keep things running. Toward that end, and to make newcomers feel a bit more at ease, here’s some info that will keep your comments from landing in moderation or otherwise clog things up and make life difficult for the mods:
1. Size matters. Long posts get automatically put in moderation and require the mods to set them free. If you want to use a post from elsewhere, don’t cut and paste the whole thing, just give us a link and post a snippet. It saves space here, and gives the original author the traffic they deserve on their site.
2. Words matter. Especially those words that appear in email spam. Creative use of asterisks in words like “ins*rance” or “vi*gra” will keep things from getting caught in the filters.
3. Links matter. If you put a comment in with more than two links, it will end up in moderation. If you absolutely, positively have to have multiple links, you probably want to split it into multiple comments.
4. Attribution matters. If you are posting a news item, give us a link so we know where it came from, how timely it is, and how credible it is.
5. Preview is your friend. Before you send that post, especially if you’ve used bold, italics, or inserted a link, check it out by clicking the preview button before you submit it. It saves on the cleaning bills. FDL Regulars who have gotten used to using “Edit this Comment” will notice that this has disappeared for today, to keep the site moving more smoothly – so Preview, people!
6. Beware the ziggurat! Nested comments are fine, but after a couple they end up breaking the margins of the page and screwing things up until a mod can correct it manually. This is especially a problem if a link is embedded in the ziggurat. After a couple of levels, start a new comment or delete some of the internal quotes.
Finally, and most importantly: Do not feed the trolls. Don’t even quote them. It just encourages the trolls, and makes life difficult for the mods.
Welcome to the ‘Lake! The water’s warm, so jump right in.

This was what Rachael Maddow was talking about when we hung out after doing her show. She said “I’m a cynic, but always right” and then asked us if we thought people were prepared to take to the streets if the GOP stole the election. Ken said that might not be something to bring up on the air, and she responded by saying she’d been talking about it for weeks!
Needless to say, she was marvelous, if not a little alarmist.
I’d like to see a compilation of all the Repbulican concession speeches. Santorum, Allen, J.D. Hayworth, and K. Harris especially. A Chickenhawk best of type of thing.
It sure would be nice if the cable talking heads bothered to read blogs, and stories like this:
GOP NH Vote Suppression.
How can they NOT talk about the ‘02 case with all the robo crap going on?

According to John at Americablog, at least one documented robocall in Nebraska apparently used an unauthorized recording of the Democratic candidate’s own voice.
epu’d from earlier thread-
High turnout in CT is the best sign ever. This will definately screw with the “likely voter” screens. And you can bet they ain’t turning out for Joe.
Hey all — just got back from lunch with egregious. She is a doll! We had fantastic Thai food and a great time — and she brought 3 dozen pumpkin muffins for the blogfest this evening. hehehehe
Hey Christy,
While I definitely agree that the Robo Callers and other dirty tricksters should serve well deserved time, I have to take exception to your comment:
Poor New Hampshire – my home state – had to send the last bunch to CT for jail as the new Federal Prison wasn’t finished. Now are you wishing all those nasty cretins be housed in my fine state?
On this very subject, Billmon has a nice rant and a little advice:
I was in India for the 04 election (voted early before leaving) and when I heard that the election had been stolen (the contrast from Kerry’s positive exit surveys across the board to the final results told the story) I came back feeling that for the first time this was no longer my country. I never felt that way even with Nixon. Before then I felt the US would survive even the worst Republicans.
But I have taken new hope from the emerging Netroots. If you haven’t voted yet, DO IT! And if they give you a problem, FIGHT BACK!
If Iraq isn’t problem enough, the WORLD needs an America with competent leadership: we are facing world crises with overpopulation, peak oil, global warming. The continuation of civilization hangs in the balance here, nothing less.
i signed up a few weeks ago to get text messages if anything is screwy in my area, and am absolutely prepared to make the brooks brothers riot look like a prayer meeting.
hoping it doesn’t come to that, though. clear-cut victories across the board would be nice! would love to be able to bust out the wine early.
bdu @ 5
Agreed. I’ve thought so for a while. This is nothing more, less, or other than a subversion of the foundation of American government, and should be right up there with selling nuclear secrets on the treason top five.
Lots of reports that Denver area voting is a train wreck. Dems trying to get polling time extended by judge.
Am I doing something wrong? the link to teh audio file is all wonky..
I hope this is the last election that every talking head tacks on “vaunted republican edge in GOTV” to their every utterance regarding turnout.
I think the times are changing. We are a huge part of that. Go Dean!
To the Rethugs, all that matters is winning. If a fine has to be paid, or one of their own has to go to jail because of illegal activities during the vote, that is just a cost of doing business, because there are never do-over elections without the fraud. Rethug tactics are one short step short of Frankie Pantangilie in the GodFather II – the families will be taken care of and so will they, with a new job, when the jail time ends.
I don’t usually watch Tweety, but I was waiting for Olbermann. Did anyone else see the Tweet and the buffoon Pat Buchannan laughing their fool heads off over the RoboCalls? Traitors and idiots and anti-Americans. For shame.

I’ve checked that I can in fact sharpen a pitchfork with my Dremel tool :)
In other countries (Mexico and the Ukraine come immediately to mind), when the count fails to square with what everyone knows perfectly well was the vote, they take to the streets.

The picture at the top. Mr. Macaca eating watermelon. More code for the GOP base or am I being paranoid? (Again.)
I figure that with excess turnout in CT, results will be closer to RV than LV polls. I checked Pollster.com, and the most recent RV poll was UConn on 10/9, with 48/40. LV polls from around that time showed larger differences (11, 13, 20, 20). Good news, good news.

1,325 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Hardin Smith and Firepup Patriots:
I jest returned from 2 hours of phone bankin GOTV from our county Dem Party HQ…when I voted early this AM the line was 10 minutes at 0815!! Most folks on the list I was callin’ off were at work but most a those I contacted where over the top for the Democratic ticket. The most heartenin’ thing was the voter list we were workin…it was MUCH better cultivated than the Kerry effort in ‘06 though there were still a few that had not been ID’d at least once.
So what I learned: 1. the turnout looks to be the biggest in an off election in post war memory (from the Democratic Clerk of Court and old time county operative) 2. the fascist voter suppression efforts are far more extensive and “in your face” than ever seen before and there is an uneasy feelin’ among the full timers at the office.
This contradictory stuff makes it hard to be too sanguine about the results even though if the turnout remains at record levels, there is no way the fascists ken steal it in this county.
KEEP THE FAITH…WE KEN DO THIS THING!!!

He does say it all, doesn’t he? It just that sort of entanglment between the GOP and big corporate interests that changed me from a Regan democrat to hating everthing the GOP stands for. The problem is that the entanglement is so complete that it would take the equivelent of a second revolution to undo it. Some serious anti-trust action could go a long way to mitigating the problem, but that will require dumping the entire DLC structure in favor of a true progressive agenda. And that is a task for ‘08 and beyond.

I think that we need to require a class on democracy in order to graduate high school. I don’t think that half the people in this country understand or appreciate what it is.
It would be difficult to describe Republican behavior as anything other than non-patriotic.
As I was flipping through channels this morning I caught some Republican saying there was nothing wrong with what they were doing with the phone calls and that the only reason the Dems were upset by it was because we didn’t think of it first.

IA *definitely* NAL, but it occurs to me that the GOP and its associates have reached the level of a Corrupt Organization for purposes of the RICO Act. Bribery, extortion, theft, embezzlement, fraud, obstruction of justice — and that’s just the lobbyists and the corporate donors. Take the whole f*cking mess down, and seize their assets too — the GOP politicos, their lobbyists (former politicos), and their Ken Lay-esque buddy-buddies. They are the modern mob and should be prosecuted as such.
On the vote front, I cast mine in IL-05; low low turnout considering the most exciting things on the ballots were Cook County referendums. Been encouraging my co-workers to get to the polls the last several days, though; many of them live in much more key districts than my own (IL-06, for example).

also that’s just a template of a suggestion for any other race — you can go to your state’s secretary of state or state board of elections website and see if they are doing results in real time. most states do this.
Oh almost forgot, not that it matters to any races (Eshoo is my rep and Di-Fi my senator, Arnie’s going to win no matter how my district votes), but turnout seemed abnormally high at my polling place. Usually, even at the 2004 elections, there’s 5 machines with one in use when I walk in. Today all five were occupied and I had to wait for one to open up before voting. In the time I was on the machine, several others came in and had to wait.
We’ve got plenty of machines, thankfully, but that’s a definite uptick in participation from what I usually see.
Americablog is saying that it looks like a high turnout in VA too.
Gotta take that as a good sign.

I’m not going to give my civics class much credit, though–it was really a pretty shallow and propagandic waste of time (not unlike the moonlighting coach who taught it). Why must these evil bastards ruin everything positive in American life? I have always loved election day, because it encapsulates what our country is supposed to be about– free people, freely exercising their right to choose their leaders.
To the right-wing, none of this matters. All they care about is winning, whatever it takes, and no matter what smoking ruins they leave behind them.
