Robert Novak offers his DC insights as to why Democrats might do well in this election cycle:
Last, but not least, comes the brilliant candidate recruiting and fundraising on the part of two men – Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chairman Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) Chairman Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). And should it occur, Democratic victory will come in spite of the total incompetence of Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Howard Dean.
TeddySanFran: "I thought Novak provided an excellent counterpoint, an inside-the-Beltway six-feet-under picture of what passes for wisdom among the chatterati. You can bet Cokie Roberts’ enormous head was nodding when she read that aloud this morning over her gruel."
I think I find a bit less bubble-headed annoyance in this analysis by Perry Bacon of Time:
The Democratic National Committee chairman argues that if the Democrats want to win presidential elections, they need to spend to build strong state parties across the country rather than pump all their cash into swing states like Ohio. Other top officials, led by Illinois Representative Rahm Emanuel, the man in charge of electing Democrats to the House on Nov. 7, have fumed at what they consider Dean's boneheaded approach. They wonder why he is investing in a victory in 2020 in Alabama instead of pouring that money into closely contested districts that could help Democrats get the 15 seats they need to grab control of the House now.
But following the Mark Foley scandal, Democrats are talking about not just winning the House but piling up as many as 40 new seats and also capturing the Senate. And some of the places where they are now competing lie in the blood-red states where Dean has been on his lonely crusade to find blue voters. In Idaho, where President Bush won 68.4% of the vote in 2004, Democrat Larry Grant is close enough to winning a House seat that Vice President Dick Cheney and Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert have made visits to campaign for Grant's opponent. In Kansas, G.O.P. incumbent Jim Ryun had Cheney in town to raise money in his race against Democrat Nancy Boyda. Democrats are holding out hope in two House districts in another Republican stronghold, Nebraska.
Victory in any of those races is still a long shot, but local officials say support from Dean could help put their candidates over the top. He has sent at least two organizers to most states to register voters and rebuild moribund state parties. With the help of Dean's staff, the Nebraska Democratic Party held conventions in 68 of the state's 93 counties this year, up from 36 in 2004; participants signed up to canvass and serve as precinct captains. Grant says staff members from the Democratic National Committee have worked to identify and contact potential voters in his district, a task congressional candidates in most states have to do themselves. Party officials in Idaho and Nebraska credit the communications directors they hired with Dean's funds–neither state had a full-time party flack–with helping coordinate their messages and successfully attack G.O.P. candidates. "If we win a House seat in Nebraska, Howard Dean will get more credit than Rahm Emanuel," says Barry Rubin, executive director of the Nebraska Democratic Party.
I see that Republican Logic, which is to actual logic what DC wisdom is to real wisdom, has infected an entire political class (what Pach calls "The DC/K Street Elites") like a bad case of the crabs. Much like an "STD" it really doesn't seem to respect whether people have "R"s or "D"s next to their names, but it's nice to see that the Rah Rah Rahm & Chuck show is an official Republican talking point. Good to know.

Go Webb!
Yes! I won
not…
Some 70 percent of the registered voters will go to the polls today, according to Connecticut Secretary Susan Bysiewicz.
Wow. That would be amazing.
stop putting that guy’s face on your website. Jeezus he’s ugly!!!!!
good luck today to D’s in all 50 states, especially the deep red ones.
Not to rain on any parades, I want Leiberman to lose as much as everyone else, but here in Cook County (Chicago) conventional wisdom is that if you can’t be in first place, be in last. That it’s the second best place to be.
Now that novakula has said it the corporate shill media will be all over themselves heaping praise on these two vichy dems.
After all he and sludge rule their world
sticky @ 5
That’s certainly one way to reduce server load on election day!
I have book group tonight, and will be desperate to get home and see the returns. No fingernails left to chew.
He’s a pug-ugly sonofabitch when he’s petulant, ain’t he??
Robert NoFacts is a dinosaur facing the ice age of his own well-deserved oblivion.
Because it must be said:
Fitz!
Fitz!!
Fitz!!!
With that picture at the top of the post, a single Fitz won’t suffice.
People here in Washington are either elated or dazed/confused/angry, depending on their party. It’s a funny turn of events. At least I find it amusing. The chattering class is going to have to find a new spin for their fairy tales.
And does every single one of my neighbors have to be outside right now with the leafblower? It is so noisy right now. I remain…calm. My mug says What Time Is Recess?
Bellwethers, or is it Bill Whithers?
You make the pick.

Yes indeed…the corporatist oligarchy and K-Street bagmen are throwin’ Rove under the bus and passin’ out promissory notes of millions to Rahm the Enabler and Chuck the Bookkeeper Schumer.
We hafta get through tonight and then, no matter the outcome, drive those sons a bitches back to the fascist party where they belong.
KEEP THE FAITH AND RELOAD, THE NEXT BATTLE HAS ALREADY STARTED!!
In my current state of anxiety, I won’t believe any dem has won until the celebration party. All this ‘heavy turnout’ vs. ‘light turnout’ is good for D or for R is turning me into a lump of quivering ectoplasim.
I am going to watch an old movie on AMC – hoping it will have alot of shooting and stuff to get my agressiveness and combativeness out.
You think he looks bad in that picture, imagine what he *really* looks like without all that tv makeup.
The very fact that Novak said this opught to be proof to any thinking person that th eopposite is true.
Republicans fear Dean and understand Rahm and Chuck will bend over any time they ask….

So they’ve become the shattering classes?
About time.
Yeah, I know I don’t know how to spell ectoplas[?]m.
those bastards! (shaking my fist at the unforgiving heavens) really, in this robo-call tactic I see Mr. Rove’s hand all over it and I deeply hope people don’t fall for it.
my polling place was unbelievably empty… but then this is DC – (GO ELEANOR H-N! not that there was any question – she’s unopposed)
“which is to actual logic what DC wisdom is to real wisdom”
yes, make no mistake, it really is Bizzaro World here
The Chuck & Rahm show has been very damaging to Democrats. They don’t want grassroots input into *their* government.
Howard Dean had it right, and if they’d have listened to us and to him we’d be in an even better position to make gains.
ooooh, Mr. Credibility Novak has spoken. I’ll alert the mannekins.
Chicago — tom @ 6
Not if last is waist-deep. Seriously, I went into the voting booth today and Joe was so low down that you’d literally have to stoop to vote for him. hehe The major parties were eye-level.
To drag a discussion up from prior thread:
A bellwether is any entity in a given arena that serves to create or influence trends or to presage future happenings; the term is derived from the Middle English bellewether and refers to the practice of placing a bell around the neck of a castrated ram (a wether) in order that this animal might lead its flock of sheep.
I think they left the H out of Rahm’s name! Paging Darkblack! “Bellwether’d Rahm” photo needed, stat!
heh…low low Joe. How low can he go? I think we all know.
The man who outed Valerie Plame is presenting himself as an expert on making smart political judgements?
imm, you on? [waving hi]
You’ve gotta stoop pretty low to vote for Joe.
Nice, SharonW!

Not that I want you to change :~)
Nous sommes arrivee. Christy and I are at Tryst. Some Republican dumbass is standing next to me telling someone there’s no chance the Democrats will take the house.
He’s fat and bald and wearing a Hawaiian shirt.
Fucking rightards.
Rahm Emmanuel is a fucking moron, and my Madame DeFarge has him duly recorded as a traitor to the people.
Dean has been saying what any smart political strategist would say: A national party must have a broad-based infrastructure, from the ground up. It finds and grooms candidates and campaign workers and nurtures them up the chain.
Meanwhile, you’re forcing the other side to pull all their money from the top races and make them spend it across the board–which they haven’t had to do in the past. This is the first election since I can remember when I’ve seen Republicans having to abandon races in droves. Leaving Santorum, deWine twisting in the wind–Who would have thought this possible two years ago?!
The 50-state strategy exposed the essential weakness of the GOP operation: They have deep, deep pockets, but those pockets are not infinite. They have limits. And with an antiquated system of relying on fundraisers and direct mail to gin up their cash flow, they can’t do blitzkrieg fund-raising like the Dems can with their netroots accessible for real-time donations, 24/7.
…and fresh virgin blood.
Short folks for Joe! We’re not “vertically challenged”, we’re just stupid!

Heh. So, was there an Rover October surprise? If there was, it must have been a dud. I didn’t even notice it.
Dean is running an insurgency.
By forcing the GOP to burn precious resources in their backyards, they can not go on the attack in the Democrats backyard. It is not a 2020 strategy, but a 2006 strategy needed to knock them off-balance. Why was Bush down south this weekend. Sure he is unpopular, but also because he was needed to try and stop yet another insurgency on his watch. The bonus is it builds the party to victory in 2020, while helping us win now. Dean is brilliant.
Chiming in from Richmond, VA. Voted at the polls before work at 6:45 AM. There was quite a line. No problems, all the workers were happy and polite. The line went quickly…. but no one talked. No one in line spoke with each other. Odd tension in the building. Maybe it was because it was so early for some folk.
Quite different from my previous polling location at a senior citizen home where they had cookies and punch and invited people to stay after voting and talk about the election in their day lounge room. It was like a party.
Odd point: The Congressional race in my district is between a Republican and a Green Party member, no Dem on the ticket. I’m using that race as an indicator as to how much people dislike the right. I think the Green guy will get a fair percentage while he had ZERO platform. But no Dem on the ticket should tell you about my district. Go Webb!

TRex–you FUNNY!!! Fed Ex… Much laughter in this small office…
No, the essential weakness of the GOP (TEAM LOSER v2.0) is that their policies (writ large, I’ll include incompetence, corruption, etc. as official Chimpco policies) don’t represent anything close to a majority, and never have. The difference now is that the majority has finally noticed. Their “base,” the true believers, is small, and rallying the base only works if the rest of the populace isn’t paying attention, or is initially duped. That’s over and done with. Their toast b/c they’ve been found out.

Sorry, but they’ve been pulling this game with complete incompetents and policy incomptence, forever. Nixon was the last remotely competent person they had in office, but he surrounded himself with morons like Agnew.
They were able to pull off this scam for so long because the Dems abandoned their infrastructure and old-fashioned political hardball. The Republicans did not.

Perfect, and on top of that, they need the extra dough to sell their shitty product…
Since Valley Girl isn’t around, I need to correct Trex’s French grammar: Nous sommes arrivees.
LJ/Aquaria @ 33
Which is why we the fund raising needs to be more than 24/7, but 365/24/7, starting tommorow. This will let the winners know they do not need to sell out to K-Street, and it will also let the near winners (cuz they are not losers!) know we will back them in 2008, so they can start their next campaign now.
Howard Dean is deserving of all credit that
comes his way. Chuck and Rahm may be members
of the Democratic Party but what they really
represent are the DC way of politics and it’s
kowtow to American corporatists,militarists
and AIPAC. The Corporate Party indeed has two
components…the GOP and the DEMS. No matter
which “party” wins elections the Corporates
always float to the top in DC. K Street, the
money funnels and the broad foreign affairs
strokes clearly Corporate Party functions.
Howard Dean represents a more broadly based
Democratic base. Chuck and Rahm are front men
for DC ways and means. Bill Clinton is very
good at oratorical flourish…ok. Hilary while
a good Senator is not Presidential material.
We all know what the Corporatists want. They
gave us Iraq,a very flawed tax policy and are
way deep in economic and political strip mining
projects around the globe. 2008 is not far off
politically speaking. What Howard Dean is doing
is important. Chuck and Rahm will very likely
be casting themselves as DEM GOOD GUYS over the
next few months. Fact of life in DC. If CT.JOE
is re-elected the stench from his “return” to
DC DEM power spots will fall down on someone.
I doubt Howard Dean will be as close to the
fall-out as Chuck and Rahm. The “smell test”
will be failed if JOE pulls some really blatant
DC dosey-doe GOP tainted tricks. That is likely.
LJ/Aquaria @ 60
Probably correct, but the question is *why*? If I owned a tinfoil hat, I might think that the same people who hijacked the Republicans own a few strategic Dems, too. You think? Or did they just get lucky, over and over again?
They are going to do a room shot here at Tryst at the top of the hour. Thought everyone would like a heads up. :)

What, no diss of Chris Bowers?!?
Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!
LJ – Sorry, money, or the ability to raise money, is not the fundamental weakness of the repugs or the fundamental strongpoint of the grassroots.
They’re not losing today b/c they couldn’t raise enough money, they’re losing b/c their incompetent and their policies don’t represent a majority viewpoint.
And the grassroots isn’t powerful b/c it can outraise the repugs, it’s powerful b/c it got people interested in what they’re gov’t is doing in their name and getting them to care.
Even if repugs had limitless funds, they’d still be losing b/c fundamentally (no pun intended), they don’t represent a good majority of the public, and the public now knows that.
fallenmonk @ 80
and when it’s time for food hit Diner, Mezze, or Meskerem – and down Columbia to the West there’s some pretty decent Salvadoreno and since it is a political night you really ought to check out Chief Ike’s (as in Eisenhower) Mambo Room (assuming it’s open) on Columbia East of 18th – I think – sorry don’t live up that way these days…
hi firedogs:
i’m a lurker in AZ. reading this website has really ‘empowered’ me (to use an overused buzzword.) i volunteered for the state dems for this election. i won’t say i did scads, but i made a lot of fone calls for GOTV, and i made sure that everyone in my liberal office was registered to vote and got early voter applications etc. i made sure everyone had a copy of the propositions on the ballot so they would be informed and so it wouldn’t take them a bazzillion minutes at the polls.
this weekend i met some other grassroots volunteers. i think i’m gonna agree to become a precinct chair. i bet i can find the time to get the libs and moderates in my neighborhood to stir some more.
i met three women who pooled their resources to run ‘together’ for two state house seats and one state senate seat. they were wonderful – just regular folks who got tired of politics as usual and decided to take a stand. While studying my sample ballot i realized that there wasn’t a democrat running for the state house in MY district. I’m seriously thinking that I should take a stand and run in MY district for the state house.
thank you all for standing up to the clattering asses.
This is true, EPU, but the thing is that you can’t win elections without a good confluence of money, policy and infrastructure.
If it were always about policy, the Republicans would have withered up and died, long ago. They haven’t had a viable policy platform in 30 years. They did have a formidable infrastructure and plenty of money. That has been enough to carry them across the finished line, hobbled and bleeding.
The Dems have had the policy down cold during that same time, but they had a woeful infrastructure and a shaky fundraising system. I’m sorry, but you cannot win elections on policy alone. If today we had continued to concentrate on the battle-ground strategy and letting our platform stand for itself, if we didn’t have the netroots, this party would be DOA in this election. We would have lost seats, not gained, no matter how exalted and popular our policies.
For pity’s sake, the American public consistently has long polled in favor of every single Democratic domestic issue, in overwhelming numbers, and we could not win. When massive support of policies is not resulting in election victories, you have to examine why. The most obvious answer is the answer.
Somebody needs to ask Rahm & Chuck why they talk to traitors like Novak
So is Novak now the Prince of Dark Concern? Kewl.
Kansas. Nebraska. Idaho. Wyoming. Eastern Washington. North Carolina.
Yeah, like Rahm and Chucky had any interest in competing in these places.
Even in the battleground states, they overlooked a ton of districts that are viable races despite them. Can’t wait to see Mean Jean go down in flames. Ditto Marilyn Musgrave.
this is really very simple: you take whatever a republican dick like novak says to be the opposite of reality, ergo, Dean is a genius, Rahm and Schumer are dorks.
.
I have long been a fan of Howard Dean and his 50 state strategy. As a citizen of Alabama I am very tired of the Dems simply writing off the state and there being no push for national candidates here. I have high hopes that the Dean 50 State Strategy will eventually make a huge difference here.
