UPDATE: Matt at MyDD has more on the robocall issue, including the connections that all of this skanky behavior has to Tom DeLay, the convictions in New Hampshire for phone jamming, and Terry Nelson, the head of oppo research for the NRCC. You tell me — are the GOP trying to cheat their way through this election? Shameful and wrong. More media coverage on this issue please!
___________________________
The National Republican Campaign Committee may be coming to a phone near you. I'm getting multiple reports from all over the country — in districts where the races are close, and even some where the Democratic candidate has moved ahead pretty substantially — of a robocall blitz.
These recorded calls are designed to do repeated call-backs and they have been masquerading as coming from Democratic candidates. Except they are not. They are coming from the National Republican Campaign Committee.
And it seems that it isn't just me getting reports on this very dirty attempt to suppress Democratic turn-out:
Sure, "political speech" is exempt from FCC regulations prohibiting unwanted phone solicitations. But since most Americans consider unsolicited calls an invasion of privacy, why would any campaign flood voters with prefab rhetoric?
Yes, the tactic is cheap – in many cases, pennies a phone call, compared with the $15 to $30 an hour pols used to have to pay for telemarketers to call the old-fashioned way.
There are dozens of online computerized-call firms available to do the dirty work. And it's much cheaper in a costly media market such as Philadelphia to use robocalls than to pay for TV ads.
Josh Marshall at TPM has been reporting on this with information he has gotten from readers. And there is a fabulous DKos diary on the subject that is a must read, which includes some really helpful, practical information on combatting these robocalls.
If you or someone you know is being bombarded by these repeat robocalls, there is something you can do:
The culprit in this race is the National Republican Congressional Committee, an organization that's used such scurrilous campaign tactics this season that it has been disavowed in some instances by the candidates it is supporting….
You can complain to the FCC if you think the calls are illegal, as some Murphy supporters have done. (202-418-1440, phone; 202-418-0232, fax.)
Or you can do what I briefly considered yesterday: Send the NRCC your own robocalls telling it to STOP IT!
Try www.voiceshot.com – 12 cents a call, no minimum. The NRCC's number is 202-479-7000.
Now that's what I call pushback. What else can you do? If you or folks in your area are getting robocalls, make a call yourself to the local newspaper or television station, and tell them about this problem and it's likely culprit. And ask them to look into it like the reporter from Philly did.
Call into local talk radio and gripe about the Republicans pulling a dirty trick. Talk with your neighbors, your co-workers, family and friends and see if they are having a problem with this. And contact your local Democratic office and have them get in touch with their election legal team and/or state party folks to lodge a complaint and get someone in front of a television camera to denounce this asinine stunt pronto.
From what I am hearing, this problem is widespread across the whole of the nation. I've got reports from folks in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Connecticut, New Jersey and New Hampshire. And that's just the e-mail that I've gotten to this morning.
This is a dirty, juvenile trick. Just the sort of jackass maneuver we've come to expect from Rove and Kenny Boy Mehlman and their pack of dirty cronies. You do remember that there have been convictions in the NH phone jamming case from the last election cycle with the GOP tricksters, right?
And you can file a complaint about it under FCC regs, if you can show who has been doing the calling. (See the above linked DKos diary for ways to do just that.) This is, plain and simple, an attempt to tamper with votes — and the Republican party ought to be ashamed of itself. That is, if they had any scruples left…which I doubt. Pathetic.
Also, there has been substantial push polling this election season — the Patriot Project has been doing some great work on this issue. As has TPM Muckraker, which has done great coverage of my local race push poll group, EFF. (Thanks for the irritation. Mr. Perry. Wish WV's AG had done what Indiana's did and blocked your sorry ass from calling everyone nonstop.) John also has more. And the NYTimes has a great article explaining push polling, in case you have questions as to what it is.
The best way to expose this idiocy and embarass the GOP smarm merchants who are pushing it? Make tapes of these calls, phone your local television station, and demand that the GOP stop its manipulative voter suppression. (Here's one idea for recording calls.) Also, if you can, get the phone number — and post it in the comments as well as phoning it in to your state Attorney General's office, and then phone it in to 1-888-DEM-VOTE, which is the DNC's voter protection hotline, and the testimonials received will be the foundation for any legal action, as well as a reliable central repository for follow-up contact information.
If you are working for a Democratic campaign and getting complaint calls, send them right back to the Republican in the race or the local Republican headquarters. Have those phone numbers at the ready for folks answering phones at the campaign office — these folks have to learn that this sort of skanky attempt to dissuade low information voters or undecideds is cheating, pure and simple.
Had enough? Vote for Democrats. Because this sort of crap has got to stop.
NOTE: If you have problems voting, or you witness some sort of voting irregularity, here's some useful information.
Election Protection's 1-866-OUR-VOTE has live operators who can address some problems over the phone and dispatch lawyers on the ground, if necessary.
Common Cause's 1-866-MYVOTE-1 can help people find their polling place.
I'm giving you these numbers now because having them handy before you need them is the way to go. For more information on your voting rights, see this from the DNC.
We have one more day until the election — anything you can do to help to get out our vote would be very much appreciated. America is counting on all of us. So cast your ballot, and make sure you take some folks along with you to do the same.

FDL!
Good morning All! I’ve posted the video of my interview with Charlie Brown from this weekend. What an amazing man. He spoke with me at the kitchen table after a grueling day of campaigning with Paul Hackett and while his family including his son who flew in from Iraq by way of Germany to spend a few days with him before the election and before he returns for his fourth tour in Iraq next month.
GOTV everyone! Keep helping down to the wire. Even with the BlueAmerica donations because they’re using that money to buy radio air time until the last hour the polls are open. My interview with Paul Hackett is on the front page of C&L if you want to watch that one too. Keep Fighting everyone… This one’s a winner!
fitz!
Nate! Charlie Brown!
and GET OUT THE VOTE, TIME’S A WASTIN’
I sent a tip on this with a link to WGAL the local TV station for Lancaster County PA. They have an email address for newstips. Other stations might have the same. I’ll be checking their web sights shortly.
I want to see leaders of the Democratic Party on television and radio TODAY, THIS MORNING screaming about the robocalls.
What exactly are they leaders of, otherwise?
This will be my last post on FDL for the next few days.
My theory is, If I have time to read FDL, I have time to call, walk or volunteer.
Thanks FDL, I’ll see you soon.
GOTV……..It must be a landslide!
Morning egregious!
I added some text to my Fitz comment including the link to my interview with Charlie this weekend. I hope the BlueAmerica sites are able to help me get this one out. People need to see what a great guy Charlie is. It’s why I’m up at 5:30am after another all-nighter. Hopefully this is my second to last one this week.
Well, third to last because I plan to party all night Tuesday celebrating Charlie’s victory!
Christy… Add the CA-04th to that list. John Doolittle has been running robo-calls for a week but they’ve gone over the top in the past two days.
Are any of the MSM newsprograms or the major newspapers going to cover this story. Or is it up to Keith Obermen and the Daily Show…again to show those guys what real journalism is all about!
Nate, the egregious household would kick in more for Brown but then the FEC could come and haul us away :) I can still help support you if needed. Please remind me of your tipjar location.
egregious @ 4
egregious: Is it true you were ‘73? I was ‘80.
My phone banking in CT shows that Chris Shays (or one of the national orgs campaigning for him) is calling Dems with the “message about Diane Farrell” robo-calls.
The one caller that mentioned to me was made aware that is was a pug operation, and was appreciative for the info.
What scumbags they are.
Go NEd!
Morning gang. Question for any of you who have flown recently: can I bring my iPod on the plane in my carry-on, or do I need to pack it away in luggage that is checked? I’ve been trying to find info on that so I can finish packing to go to DC for the CNN thing, but I can’t find an answer on the airline website.
Off-topic but of interest, I would think, to the lovely Overlords of Firedoglake. You blog is now officially blocked on military bases (or at least the Air Force). I just finished a Unit Training Activity (UTA) weekend (the monthly weekend duty of a Reservist). Normally, I will take time throughout the day to browse over my various favored blog/news sites to keep up with happenings over the weekend. This time, however, I found two of my previously freely accessible sites to be blocked by the military net censors: Firedoglake and DailyKos. I don’t recall the exact verbiage used on the BLOCKED screen that came up for Firedoglake but it had something to do with “streaming content of a personal/private nature”. DKos was blocked due to “profanity”.
I could still access other sites: Unclaimed Territory, Booman Tribune, Eschaton, AmericaBlog, Hullabaloo, and a number of others, but I wonder how long that will last. I expect that as the censors get acquainted with these sites they will likely find reason to block them too.
We are provided the ability to setup a video news feed on our computers now (since about 4 months ago or so). The news feed permitted? Fox. TVs setup in our medical clinic are invariably set to…Fox News. At least they don’t block access to other news stations online. Next UTA I will need to check out some of the Wingnut blogs (for the first time…I’m not sure I can handle the soiled feeling I’ll get just by passing through) to see if any of them are blocked for “profanity” or “streaming media of a personal/private nature”.
egregious @ 8
I may take you up on that… I’m running on fumes but too busy to notice or care. I will send you a private email or there is always the Paypl button on top of my blog sidebar above Charlie’s picture.
In the meantime, I just got done reading this article about the CA-04th race. One of the best I’ve read yet. Have a look when you have the chance.
For helping Charlie, you could help me remind the firepups and all BlueAmerica folks for that matter that contributing funds is still very helpful. Charlie has the ability to borrow money against his online totals to do last minute radio buys to catch people as they’re driving to the polls. He’ll be buying more spots all through tomorrow and will keep them running until the last hour of the polls open. I think some people think that the funds won’t reach the candidates at this late date but that’s not true in most cases. It can be used for radio, GOTV support, logistics etc…
Also, I can bring my laptop with me on the flight, right, but I have to take the battery out? Or are they making you do that any more? Gah! Why isn’t there some website with all of this information on it somewhere?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 11
Christy, I brought my little 4gig iPod on board the flight from HI to CA a month ago in my carry-on. I hadn’t even thought about that until you mentioned it but they didn’t say anything at all to me about it. Not sure about the laptop though. I shipped a desktop.
If you have a moment, please read my last comment to egregious. There is a very important note at the end. Also check out my interview with Charlie Brown when you get 10 minutes free. I’m trying to let everyone from BlueAmerica see what a great guy he is. The link is in the first comment of the thread.
Christy Hardin Smith @
12
Yes, you can bring ipod and laptop (with battery) with you on the plane.
Praedor at 13 — thanks much for the heads up. If you can google the blog, you can likely get through via a google link — might be worth a try, I suppose. But I figured this was coming, since Kos had already been having problems. So much for our troops getting both sides, eh? Jerks.
Christy, my son carried his ipod and laptop when he flew back to Toronto in October. But given the likelihood that the Rethugs have put your name on some flying list, maybe you’d prefer to leave it home….
robocalls, blocked websites, no-fly lists…some democracy.
Good luck in DC Christy.
Funny that you’re asking thoise question. Even funnier that I can’t answer them. I haven’t been on a plane since 9/11. (I have a 5.5 year old, so flying hasnt been part of the plan. :) )
twolf1 and Nate — thanks mucho! You guys are the best!
Christy:
As far as I know, you can bring your IPod on the plane with you. You can also bring your laptop on, and I’ve heard nothing about the battery. They’ll make you take the laptop out of its case though… (our recent experiences, but no guarantees!)
M.
Prairie at 19 — I can’t leave the laptop at home. I’m going to be blogging from the CNN blogger thing. Must have laptop.
Christy – here is another possible resource in states with laws similar to South Carolina’s law pertaining to robocalls placed to deliver political messages. I mentioned this resource in a comment I posted yesterday. For the benefit of those who missed it, here is the comment that I posted:
Stephen Parrish, CPA @

Christy Hardin Smith @ 21
…still no liquids or gels in quantities over 3 oz. in carry-on though – go figure.
The general NRCC number 202 479-7000 is a phone hell from which naught will escape. The NRCC communications number is 202 479 7070 and the after hours number for those on deadline is 716-208-1870. The General Consul’s number is 7069. He might have some comments about how legal this all is.
Otherwise, NRCC phone numbers are of the form 202 479-70xx where the xx runs up to at least 70. There are some blanks (7002, 7004, 7006-8, 7029) and a bunch of numbers that have no voice mail (7013-16, 7021, 7023).
I am sure that they would all like to hear from you
Christy,
Here is the definitive site on permitted items.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/a…..tems.shtml
Good Luck and I will look forward to the election coverage.
See you on CNN.com
Christy Hardin Smith @ 20
No worries Christy… I can’t wait to follow your work from CNN.
I left you a couple notes/requests in the comments above if you get a sec to look back. I also sent you an email with links to the interview.
Eli Rabett @ 24
LOL Calling now for late-night therapy session! A strung-out, overworked, liberal blogger… I’m sure that’s just the person they want to hear from this morning!
Christy and/or moderators – there appears to be an open italics tag starting at comment 13 at 5:48 am.
Backup your laptop before you go!
Also long italics run in the previous thread around 270 iirc. Looks like Jacqrat….
How I made italics quit:
By starting this comment with [/i] except the little carat thingies inplace of [ and ]. Then refresh the page.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 15
Christy, when I flew down to the PFAW deal, I brought my laptop in carry-on. Didn’t take the battery out. If a laptop is a go, why not an IPOD?
Stephen Parrish, CPA @ 28
Oops… Sorry about that. See what I was saying about being a strung-out insomniac blogger… :-D
Nate @ 33
Ooops. It looks like that is mine. Does that actually fall onto subsequent posts?
Pectopah @ 10
Da, pravda.
Arts and Sciences, independent major, class of ‘73. It’s still my lucky number, at the gym I got that for my locker as inspiration. Lived at Prospect of Whitby.
Hm, guess that rather pinpoints my age, but I love having people guess because they typically guess 10-15 years too young.
Christy,
You will have to type the link in by hand. Eliminate any spaces.
g’ morning, all… contacted all the tv stations last night (haven’t seen anything yet) as CA-50 and Francine Busby is getting hit… I believe she’s already contacted the FEC but it couldn’t hurt to get this on the news…
coffee is good!
Mornin Firedogs,
depending on where I’m calling this evening – will do my best to inform folks of this crap
longest workday of the week, followed by Precinct Meeting and eve phonebanking
oh and Karl, your 15 minutes are up ! genius my ass, this is all ya got ? robocalls ?!?
have spent the last month listening to my fellow americans grieve for all you’ve cost them in Iraq – they have definitely had enough and no one’s folding up their tent and conceding if you try any of your Florida/Ohio crap tomorrow night – you’ll be lucky to get work running a county supervisor’s campaign after tomorrow.
I am in PA 6th – Murphy/Gerlach. I have been non-stop robocalls for more than 2 weeks now (5-10 a day). They show up on my CID as unknown name, unknown number or 000-000-0000. Even Bill Clinton called me yesterday (he didn’t ask what I was wearing though). I have been hanging up on, or not answering the calls. Today I will make an effort to listen to them all.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 18
Praedor and Christy -
Don’t no if this situation is like the one I have at work, but the site might be getting tripped in the automatic firewall rather than a specific censor. It happens to me periodically.
I’ve been meaning to ask Janie if she knows anything about how the filters work and if there is some kind type of coding in the html that triggers the firewall, similar to what you might use to increase your visibility with search engines.
egregious @ 35
Founders Hall, then College Town near Johnnies in a Jason Fane roach motel. Those were the good ole days. I’m sure we heard KO on VBR, just didn’t know it then.
I got the open italics gang. :)
And I updated the post above to include a great link to a post Matt Stoller at MyDD did on this issue.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 12
iPod: Yes, you can carry it on.
The only time it was restricted was flights in/out of Britain right after the liquid terror episode. But even BA relented on electronics immediately as it cut into their all-important business travel.
I am in NC-11: Taylor v. Schuler (D)
NRCC robo calls are bad here as well. Schuler is using a very polite canvassing approach to inform voters of how to vote for judicial nominees (not available on straight party vote. They’re tring to defuse the NRCC negativity in the final hours.
OT – Thinkprogress.org:
Just what one would expect of a party that has propered from pushing phony political personas, engineering phony electoral victories and prosecuting phony wars.
Damn, I have had enough!
Computers and IPODs OK -batteries in. But be sure to bring a small (sandwich size) clear plastic bag for your eye drops, hand lotion etc if you want to bring them on board. Otherwise you are sent out of line to buy a bag – if you are “lucky” enough to have a store in the terminal. Safe flight!
off topic kinda but how can bush brag about the economy when HIS BASE is sending record amounts of investments overseas looking for better returns than they can get in the USA? YOU WOULD THINK that the people WITH MONEY just don’t trust our president to manage the economy. The question is now wether a democratic house and hopefuly senate would be forceful enough on economic issues to convince bush’s BASE TO INVEST IN THE USA AGAIN? bush will try and spin a weak economy as our fault our response should A we just got here and B we have not gone far enough yet! A good economy should be spun as with Dems in control Americans are investing in America again, unlike the record amounts of money Americans invested overseas when bush had a GOP house and senate!
It’s gonna be a busy day today. First local GOTV, and then Moveon phone banking. Looking forward to the participation :) And, I managed to convince my mom and cousins to do so as well– I hope it helps.
Christy, as for your laptop/ipod worries, I’ve carried a backpack full of gear onto a plane as recently as a few months ago. I had my laptop, a dslr, lots of lenses, a hard drive, a voice recorder, etc, etc. The only time I got stopped was when a particularly smelly individual couldn’t identify the soap in my bag, and thought it might have been plastique. I was tempted to make a very scathing remark, but that would’ve been a recipe for a quick trip to a dark room where a big dude with more tattoos than IQ asks me philosophical questions.
You can’t take water, either on the plane or through security. They don’t check your bag when you get on the plane again, though, so you could feasibly buy water in the terminal and then put it in a bag, but then some hyperparanoid individual on the plane will probably think they’re doing everyone a favor by turning you in, so I wouldn’t risk it.
Christy, thanks again for the marinade recipe, it was a big hit last night for dinner. Subistituted tarragon vinegar, very tasty! Good luck in DC and we’ll be pulling for you.
Contacted the TV stations in the Harrisburg, York, Lancaster area and the ABC affiliate out of Philadelphia about this with links to TPM, KOS, Firedog and Atrios. Anybody in the area can help out by doing the same. If they get enough contacts they just might do a story on this. If you can’t help out in any other way, at least do this. Thanks, gang.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 15
Yes, you can bring your laptop. No, you don’t have to take the battery out.
At security you will have to take the laptop out of its case, and sometimes they make you turn it on, but not nearly as often as they used to.
The advantages of being a travel warrior…[edit] I see twolf beat me to the punch. Christy, we’ve got your back!!
tuneforg @ 48
Investment strategy works the opposite of the way you’d think, actually. You’d want to invest where you think there will be growth, and if you think the growth has already been maxed out, you stop investing there. So, if everyone thinks the American economy is a-ok and going strong, now’s not the time to invest. The time to invest is when the economy is terrible and the only way to go is up. If you were to judge solely on the dow/nasdaq numbers in recent weeks, you might reach the conclusion that Bush is right, the economy is strong, and so start investing in China or the like because that’ll be an emerging market.
There’s more in this book (amazon.com).
OMG — I’m going to be a nervous wreck by the time tomorrow rolls around. The polls are all over the place, I’m getting more and more e-mails about robocall problems EVERYWHERE….aiiiyeeeeee! This is all going to come down to GOTV efforts. Anything that folks can do on this today and tomorrow, please do it.
tfitznc -
Have been meaning to ask you whereabouts in western NC? Jackson Co. here. Not currently at home…….what are you hearing about the Taylor/Schuler race on the ground? Voted absentee ages ago.
Forget the polls-don’t look at the scoreboard! Just make plays!
and it seems the NYT has picked up the story (sort of, in this link).
Napolean Bush and Benedict Cheney just delivered 18 more US troops to their maker in the first 6 days of November. They even got another helicopter taken down.
This doesn’t matter to them. This war is about their vanity and they will gladly feed our children into the gaping maw of this industrial war mill till, or if they leave D.C.
I have so had enough of these war mongering thieves and cehats.
-GSD
Prairie Sunshine @ 19
I have to disagree with this advice. If they let YOU thru security, then they have to let you bring legally permitted items with you.
Redd–Yeah these robocalls seem to be having a substantial effect. We got em out here during the special election to replace Cunningham- and they made a difference. The polls are shifting gooper- but they’ve still got a ways to go. Should still take the house.
Substantial reports of robocalls in several districts in CA and in NM (the Wilson/Madrid district, especially…gee, what a coincidence…NOT).
Christy, if there is any problem with your flight and/or car travel maybe I can help out on the DC end. I live right by Dulles and not too far from National and would be happy to be of service. I’ll email you my cell phone number.
ALERT and HEADS UP! Conquest Communications is behind the GOP robocalls.
Confirmed by a DailyKos diarist, here: http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..212753/967
Contact your local media on this NOW!
Here’s somethin wierd. CNN poll out- dems expanding their lead on the generic ballot to 20. The most recent three polls including Gallup showed it declining into single digits- and LOW single digits in some cases.
Beats me.
freeway blogging in the districts getting hit seems like it would work – be nice if the local media picked this up but all that “fair and balanced” requirement that they tell “both” sides ‘prolley adds up to no story at all…
if the weather doesn’t stink too bad, a sharpie and some flattened cardboard boxes can go a long way…
checking info…hm never mind.
There were reports on Boston’s news channels and radio last night and this morning about the Bass/Hodes robocalling in New Hampshire. The reporting was less pointed than I thought merited, but at least word is getting out.
Darksyde at Dailykos has an excellent story; he calls this the “Chinese Rocket” strategy.
Stay.On.Target.
Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton need to call a press conference and shout about the robocalls. I can’t see anyone currently in office getting the press leverage — we need this to be on the evening news!
Better link for proof that Conquest is behind this: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/11/6/02926/3087
Macsmind – live blogging from the Urologist’s office while you await your penile implant ? or were they just going to pull your nads back down again this morning ?!?!
Christy – flew last night and tons last week – here’s the deal:
laptops (with battery in) and ipods are fine … the standard remove laptop from bag and put in bin for scanning separately
any makeup, lotion, chapstick, eyedrops, etc in a 1 quart plastic bag – no more than 3OZ container no matter how much actual liquid (you can’t have a 5oz perfume bottle with only 1oz in it for ex.) which you put in the bin with your shoes, etc
no water or other beverages through security but you can buy after security and carry onto flight (phew! I was having a hard time with flights without my venti ice tea and large water!)
Latest polls.
mmr the statments ” you want to invest where you think there will be growth” and “you might reach the conclusion that Bush is right the economy is strong ” seem to cancel each other out people are investing elsewhere because they don’t think our economy is growing as fast as the rest of world. You can’t have a strong economy without growth. My main idea is to provide a response to bush’s claims about the economy.
These robocalls should be BREAKING NEWS on CNN. Nah, they’d have to spin it so it’s the Dems fault. And, yes, former President Carter should be screaming about unfair election tactics in this country as he does in others. Confused former President Clinton doesn’t want to take a chance on lowering his or the Missus’ popularity by calling attention to any flaws in our voting process. Damn.
Waccamaw @ 56
Sorry, I’m mobile today with laptop – intermittent connectivity as you know in the mtns. My office is in Asheville and I live in Mills River. Hearing v. good things on the group. Prediction: Shuler will win, but closer than polls have indicated since Auguest.
Phoenix Woman @ 70
according to KOS:
ACTION ITEM: If you’re feeling adventurous, GO TO CONQUEST’S OFFICE in Richmond, Virginia, and try to find out the truth – take your video cameras! BE POLITE! Best to do this EARLY MORNING to get maximum surprise value. Bring the press!!!!!
Sounds like a job for Mike Stark!!!
Jonathon Alter is addressing the robocalls on MSNBC and making note that they are “dirty tricks” with Repubs posing as Dems.
MarkC @ 69
I think that CARTER is an excellent choice. Anyone have contacts at the Carter Center???
Goopers showing positive movement in Montana, Rhode Island, and Maryland- but it probably still comes down to Virginia and Mo. and dems need both to win the senate. They’re both virtual ties- let’s hope that the normal situation prevails and the undecideds break for the challengers.
rwcole @ 81
Let’s say the pundits are correct about GOTV impact of 2-3%; those efforts could be crucial in MT, VA, MO.
IMO the demographics strongly favor the DEMS in RI and MD.
66 iraqis (counted) 5 GIs dead at least 90 Iraqis wounded and all the military industrial complex media are talking about is the kangaroo court verdict. Asking how much will it help the rethugs while ignoring the suspicious timing of the verdict. Gods help us.
This won’t help the bigger calling problem for the election but if you hate getting the robo calls or any such thing, try this device — it works wonders. You will get no calls from anyone except those you have explicity allowed. It a privacy advocate’s dream device.
http://www.privacycorps.com/pages/product20.htm
Christy @ 12:
No problem with iPods, as far as I know, and I flew most recently on 10/26.
mmr @ 58
No they haven’t. The article is on push polls and does not mention robocalls and repeat dials.
Keep Spotlighting, folks!!!
Christy Hardin Smith @

iPods are fine. I fly with mine in my purse almost weekly. Just don’t listen to it during take off and landing.
Macsmind the left is whining about roveian conspiricy well are there robo calls being made YES or NO if yes then there is something to the conspiricy, Are we whining yes ALL THE WAY TO LAW ENFORCEMENT! We are not angry because we didn’t think of it first see we are WINNING DOFUS you guys are the weak desperate to win at all cost end justifies the means no respect for the rule of law Relative as opposed to Objective moral truth types. How dare you project your moral shortcomings your evil on us as if we could have anything in comon with the likes of you.
tuneforg @ 74
They aren’t contradictory, if you’re thinking that there’s a maximum limit to growth. The statement “you can’t have a strong economy without growth”, well, I’m not sure if that’s true. The point is, the investors will see a better ROI from foreign investments, not so much from local ones. That means those foreign investments are better opportunities for growth.
One of the examples from the book I linked to had to do with Venice. If you’d invested in municipal bonds when Venice was at its peak, you would have lost money. But if you’d invested right after barbarians sacked the city and it had no place to go but up (or be completely overrun and destroyed, hence the risk involved), you would have made money.
Money is made off of risk. If Bush’s economy is so great, the market is capping, and the 11% annual stock market gains aren’t realistic in the future because America is so secure, you invest elsewhere where risk is higher and so the return will be greater if the risk pays off. If Bush were allowed to continue to the point that other countries had to ban together to put us down and we then had to recover from a massive war, then that would be the time to invest. I’d just rather not let it get to that point.
Hello, people. Do not feed the trolls.
Troll patrol: It was just a hit and run. Expect a lot more of the same in the next 2 days.
vote tampering is a criminal offense. not that it matters to these thugs.

Re the economy, my daughter who built a new house 2 years ago, had difficulty selling their old house and were forced to do a variable rate mortgage until things settled out.
I thought that with interest rates having gone up for so long, they would end up with about 7%, but they just were offered (after a bidding war among lenders) a 6.1% 30 year fixed, slightly above prime because of their debt ratio, and they are much relieved. When they started this process, there were loans out there for 5.5% but they lost out when their old house did not sell.
Why are lenders bidding so strongly for loans? My guess is that the refi market has dropped dead.
Yeah, the economy for people on the ‘working everyday’ end of the spectrum are struggling.
Just sent an email to the studio of the most popular local talk radio show in the Dakota-Northern Minnesota region on the robocall issue.
You full time Minnesotans, if you’re not comfy calling talk radio, most stations have a studio email link so you can send your comment that way. Please contact your media in the key media markets in the state and ask them to investigate this Republican dirty trick.
We deserve better.
The Republican Infomercial station in Fargo-Moorhead has a full slate of Republican candidates and honchos this morning. Fortunately their market share is pretty much the kool-aid crowd. But in Minneapolis, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Mankato, we need to inform stations about the robo-calls and ask them to report the facts about this dirty trick.
America has shed too much blood, given too many lives, spent too much treasure for “democracy” in Iraq to be denied it here at home.
Get Out Our Vote.

New polls out this morning from survey USA and Gallup..
Mo. One poll shows the gooper up by 1- the other shows the dem up by three
Va. One polls shows the gooper up by three- the other shows the dem up by one
Ct. Two polls show Joe up by 11 and 12 respectively.
Hi Christy:
Sort of OT and sort of not. Can you, Jane, Pach or Howie create a page that updates the election status of the Blue America candidates (kind of a quick reference guide w/o comments?). I’ll be glued to tv/web but know that many of the Blue America candidates may not get the coverage as the usual suspects.
I know everything will be reported in the comments for all the threads, but I suspect there will be thousands to wade through! (OK, the truth is this page would feed my need for instant knowledge/gratification…)
Thanks!

Me too :)
But back to the subject at hand. Does anyone know if they CA att gen office has been contacted with these calls? Is there a list where people can post which AG they’ve called?
rw at 100 — a grizzled campaign veteran told me something very useful a couple of weeks ago that I’ve been trying to keep in mind: beware the polls of October and November, they are fickle. Best to look at long-term trends. I’m cautiously optimistic, but worried that we aren’t doing enough to get out the vote.
The Senate is going to be a squeaker, no doubt about it. Am planning on a very, very late night on Tuesday.

Sorry if previously posted – moving slowly this AM.
And the other states? Gah, I can’t wait for this to be over.
Oops- One of the Connecticut polls is from Survey USA- the other is from Quinnipiac- but they are virtually the same.
Redd- Yeah I’m hyperventilating here as I get ready to go to my poll worker training. We’re down ta the nut cuttin as they say in Texas.
I still think that dems will take the house- although perhaps by not as much as I had hoped (20 seats?) the senate is starting to look more like four or five seats gained- but it’s FAR from over. By the time I’m through poll working tomorrow- the thing may well be over.

Sorry if previously posted – moving slowly this AM.
Note that they only agreed to stop calls to homes on the Do Not Call Registry. Nothing about halting the robocalls to other numbers. I believe I read that NH has laws that make automated political calls subject to the do not call restrictions, but most states do not. Expect that the calls continue unabated in those states.
Martha – we’ll be chasing the BA results here all night so stay tuned.
The technology behind these robo calls is trivial- anyone can do it. Dems knew- or should have known that it was coming. Seems that they could have done something to counter.
gotta go – GET OUT THERE DOGGIES – IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO DO THE RIGHT THING !!!

I was listening to C-Span this morning, and an elderly caller told the anchor she’d gotten such awful harassing phone messages that she and her friends wished they could cancel their pro-Dem. absentee votes! So this is indeed real, and serious!
I just fired off a warning (below) to a big bunch of ‘appropriate’ people on our e-mail list, including local official Dem. reps who have been sending us stuff. Below is what I sent, in case it might help anyone else send out a quick alert.
Now that I’ve done that, and this, maybe I can afford to breath into a paper bag, slow down, and read all the comments.
I feel better already, knowing all you guys are out there taking the fight to ‘em. THANKS!
rwcole @ 109
Agreed. Somewhat disappointing that the Dems are not all out there on message with a last day blitz. Not something underhanded and dirty, but just something cohesive and strong in order to send a message to those of us working in the trenches and enhance morale with a little push back.
Can’t let it get to us though…have to go make some more campaign calls.

Also, beware of the poll “spin”. The Repugs would like nothing better than to tamp down Democrat (and Independent) turnout.
The Repugs have all of their spinsters working the MSM to construct a

“This is a short and sweet posting to simply inform the masses that DailyKos is now officially blocked by the US military web filters. I just finished a Reservist weekend. While I am there I usually spend a little time to take a look-see at the goings on at DKos and other sites. Up until this last weekend (4 and 5 Nov 06) I was able to access all my blog/news sites. No more. DKos and Firedoglake are now blocked. The blurb that comes up on the DKos block indicates that “profanity” is the reason. The message on Firedoglake indicates the “problem” is streaming media of a personal nature (can’t recall the exact verbage).”………

“profanity” Now that’s funny–I flew home from germany seated close to some of our troops- “fuck” is the only word they used.
This could be the next hot topic:
“In the event of a five-seat Democratic gain and a 50-50 Senate, Republicans would continue to hold a nominal majority by virtue of Vice President Cheney’s ability to break a tie vote. Speculation will begin immediately about whether Republicans will agree to share power with Democrats per the agreement struck by leaders Trent Lott (R) and Tom Daschle (D) after the 2000 election, the last time the Senate was 50-50. Under that agreement, which was unprecedented at the time, both parties had an equal number of seats on the key committees that draft bills and handle presidential nominees. Other provisions were implemented to avoid gridlock. “

Meanwhile, for those of you who do person-to-person phonebanking, Angry Black Bitch has been at it in Missouri so much that her voice is showing the strain, moving from Kathleen Turner toward Henry Kissinger: “If you get a call from a female Kissinger Monday, it’s me (wink).”
Yes folks, it’s Phone Banking and the Modern Bitch. I am soooooo hoping she’s gonna enjoy a victory party tomorrow night. Go McCaskill!

It’s probably TRex and those Pam Atlas vlogs, especially her “interview” with Bolton. Profane does not begin to describe it . . . There’s only so much brain bleach in the military stockpiles, and the DOD has to do something to strech out the supply.
What’s going on? I just tried to go over to check on Matt Singer’s LeftInTheWest and the site is gone, replaced with some kind of travel agent thing. I was just there yesterday and now this. Color me suspicious.
OT – Report: Saddam verdict ‘fast,’ details delayed until Thursday
Guess I’m purty s-l-o-w! And I’m certainly not very electronics-savvy…
We’re in OH, so definitely in fertile ground for robo attempts. We’ve been receiving “robo-calls” for weeks now, I suppose. Very annoying, but we have Caller I.D. & ans. machine at our house, & don’t pick up if we don’t recognize a number.
I have picked up just out of curiosity a few times (but I don’t speak until spoken TO, thus maybe didn’t trigger any auto-response??). The ’suspicious’-seeming robos never have had a message attached whether I picked up OR left them for the ans. machine. Weird.
Would they have been “testing” to see if people pick up & actually talk, before they ran their actual dirty-campaign?
Whatever! I hope these goons get frog-marched straight to the pokey!
!I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK! !!!NOW!!!
egregious @ 4
God this pisses me off that we are not seeing this-its why I am no longer a registered Democrat and won’t give to any democratic organization anymore-just to candidates.
Republicans are targeting people who are either still wide open to all phone calls or who still trust Govt Agencies to actually enforce “Don’t Call” Rules. I can’t imagine being in either of those situations.
All this seems to have happened near the final date to vote. Early voting appears to somewhat immunize one from these kinds of things.
At least for 2008, I would encourage all democrats to vote early and to buy cheap technology to stop the phone calls. Again, this darn sure works — http://www.privacycorps.com/pages/product20.htm
I use it and can vouch for it.
If anyone were to start a fund to buy every registered voter in America one of these devices or something similar [ i have no financial connection to them btw ], then at least the robo call issue would be dead and gone. I’ll contribute the first $100 to a fund if one were created.

No political bump for Bush from political timing of Saddam’s verdict
by Joe in DC – 11/06/2006 10:24:00 AM
CNN’s Bill Schneider just reported that there was no impact from the Saddam verdict. That’s got to be a stunner for the White House, which choreographed the timing of that announcement. In CNN’s most recent poll, conducted from Friday through Sunday, they asked respondents if they thought that it was worth going to war in Iraq. On Friday and Saturday, 38% of respondents said it was. On Sunday, after the Saddam verdict was publicized, only 36% of respondents said the Iraq war was worth it.
Bush’s last ditch effort to milk Iraq for political gain failed. Bush’s approval rating in that same CNN poll is a measly 35%. Americans saw through this latest political ploy.
my post was supposed to say “18% of independent voters. . .”

Umm, most everyone is under the misapprehension that the Carter Center is in business for all elections. It is not. By its charter, the Center is not permitted to participate in nor monitor US elections.
Certainly, the former President can comment for himself, but not on behalf of the Carter Center at Emory. My guess is that trying to contact him about a US election issue through the Carter Center would not be met with much success.

Calm calm calm.
If the voters, generally those who have paid no attention to world affairs until 5 minutes before the election, are so easily swayed as to vote a particular way because of a robot phone call, then we certainly deserve to lose our Democracy because that’s no way to govern oneself.
However, I am of the opinion that it won’t make a lot of difference in the final numbers. As I see it our sole goal now is Get Out The Vote.
If the Republicans are desperate, then why should we worry that they use a crappy technique at the last minute. It’s like a man about to be hanged praying to God for forgiveness for his 60 years of debauchery, thievery, lying, murder and for being a Republican.

That is not the question…the question is HOW are they going to cheat THIS year.

Re-read your own post. Think about it long and hard. Go sit in the corner, with your duncecap on, until you UNDERSTAND what you have just advocated, for everyone in this blessed country!!!!!
If I heard him correctly, Bill Bennett just said on CNN that many Dems that will win have been impersonating Reps — apparently meaning moderate dems. Bill, I don’t recall dems covering up a known child molester, posting instructions online for building a nuke, spying on US citizens, torturing suspects in secret prisons, suppressing EPA reports about deadly air at ground zero… on and on… DeLay, Abramoff, Foley, Ney, macaca… where the hell is Bin Laden? If any dems are impersonating republicans, they are doing a terrible job. Now as for reps impersonating dems, that one I would buy (I’m looking at you Michael Steel).

Yay! Glad to hear it. Did you remember to kiss Rachael Maddow for me? Oh wait, I think I asked for a hug…
the only thing I can think of that makes this dirty trick biz slightly less a negative – the only people I know who don’t screen their calls are all over the age of 80 and have all already voted via absentee ballot…

If you could have heard the poor lady who called in to CSpan this morning, I don’t you’d feel that way. She was LIVID! All her friends were FURIOUS. Her STRONG STRONG implication was that NONE of them would EVER vote Dem. again, EVER!
And she sounded pretty healthy to me, bless her poor wounded heart.
These dirty trix are serious business.
Often the elderly don’t have the ability or resources to spend hours & hours ferreting out exact details. They may very well vote on faith and gut feelings about honesty and character. Losing them on that basis, I’m guessing, is forever. And those people VOTE!
This is not some trivial thing. I hope somehow Dems can get the Andrea Mitchells of the MSM to understand. Rove is COUNTING on the media to dismiss it as no-big-deal. Well, IMO, they’re dead bang WRONG to do so!
It’s time for Andrea and all the rest to DO THEIR JOBS, so we don’t have to!
Voter fraud is treason, and a bill to law should be made to treat it as such. Those who would take away peoples vote (the foundation) and particularly the elderly and minority should be locked up for life (and have their citizenship suspended).

It is absolutely no problem to bring a laptop onto any airline in the US (or abroad). Same for iPods.
You do have to take the laptop out of your carryone luggage and put it separately in a tray to go through the X-ray machine. That’s all.
I have been on flights in New York, Oregon, Atlanta, Chile, in the past 3 weeks and nothing has changed in the slightest.
But of course, try to back it up whenever traveling, and don’t let it out of your sight-and-touch.
Political junkie guy on NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” today was asked about a related issue, the misleading mailers that purport to be from the Democratic candidate but are incorrect in the facts stated and are actually from the opponent’s backers. His response? No big deal, common practice by both parties. However, all the examples of this sort of activity cited were committed by the Republicans. Have we been guilty of this kind of crap, or has NPR gone all “fair and balanced?”
